he Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC)~ and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are participating in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage resistance of seals and water trap designs for use in underground coal mines. This program is being conducted at PRC's Lake Lynn Laboratory near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. Seals designed with a 40-cm-thick polymer (polyurethane) and aggregate core between two dry-stacked (no mortar) concrete block walls (coated on out by sides) withstood a 138-kPa pressure pulse while maintaining acceptable air leakage rates. Similar seal designs utilizing a 97-cm-thick, 91-kg/m7-density, polymer-only core did not survive; however, a 5 1 -cm-thick, 203-kg/mi-density, polymer-only core seal successfully withstood the explosion pressures. Evaluations of cellular concrete seal designs have shown that a two-pour slurry injection technique did not adversely affect the strength of the 1.2-m-thick seals when subjected to a 138-kPa pressure pulse. Two seal designs utilizing low-density cementitious block have also been evaluated with successful results. In addition to seal strength tests, various 15- and 30-cm-diam U-shaped water trap pipes and a water trough design were evaluated under explosion conditions and were shown to be inadequate when evaluated under worst-case conditions. Simple modifications to the various water trap designs were successfu1 in preventing the passage of explosion flame through the trap.

Provide d comprehensive source of up-to-date information about technology for revegetating coal mined lands. Approach A great deal of activity and research in the field of coal mine revegetation has been reported in technical literature, both before and after the passage of Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Ruclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA). This information is widely scattered throughout books, scientific journals, periodicals, Government reports, and other sources, and there has been a need to develop a method of accessing it quickly and efficiently. At the request of the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement which promulgates and enforces regulations implementing the act, the Bureau of Mines has prepared a document that identifies literature relevant to coal mine revegetation. Most of the literature available on this subject has been published during the past 15 years. To tap this reservoir of information, 14 data bases were accessed from DIALOG SDI (Selective Dissemination of Information) Service using three keyword combinations (surface mining and reclamation, strip mining and reclamation, and revegetation). This procedure generated over 7,000 listings. The U.S. Department of Energy's ENERGY data base was selected from the 14 DIALOG bases, both for its large number of listings and for its broad coverage of literature. This data base contains all the unclassified information that passes through the Technical Information Center of the Department of Energy, including reports, journal articles, conferences, patents, books, monographs, theses, and engineering materials relating to energy development.

"The sulphidizing filming of minerals in oxide ores as a preliminary treatment to aid their recovery by flotation is known practice. In this work the use of barium polysulphide does not appear to have been considered. A study of the properties of barium lead to the following comparative investigation of the sulphides and polysulphides of the alkaline and alkaline-earth metals. It is thought that barium polysulphide may prove to be a more satisfactory sulphidizing reagent than others now in use under conditions that favor the cheaper barium reagent.For the investigation two fairly typical oxidized ores of copper and lead were selected. The copper ore came from the Big Indian Mine in southeastern Utah, and assayed 3.8% Cu; the copper was present in a sandstone gangue mainly as the carbonates, malachite and azurite, with less than 0.2% as sulphides, or silicate. The lead ore is from the Tintic Standard mine in the Tintic district, Utah. It is typical of the oxidized lead-silver ores of that district; the lead is present in an oxidised form in a siliceous gangue, much: Uncolored by ferric oxide. The sample assayed 5.15% Pb and 11.3 oz. Ag.In addition to the results obtained in this investigation, there are included some results secured by Mr. J. B. Lain, consulting metallurgist of Reno, Nevada, on a sample of ore from the Chino Copper Co. The ore assayed about 1.7% Cu, of which about 0.25% was nonsuiphide."

As part of an experiment in the restoration of lands strip-mined for coal, revegetation studies were conducted at three backfilled strip-mine sites in north-central Pennsylvania. The sites were subdivided into plots that were given varying amounts of lime and fertilizer. In tests conducted cooperatively with State and Federal agronomy experts, the plots were then planted with a variety of trees, shrubs, and grass-legume mixtures. Initial tree and shrub survival was not appreciably affected by lime and fertilizer applications where the spoil pH was above 4.5. Of 14 species of trees and shrubs tested, Norway spruce, black locust, Japanese larch, pitch pine, and white pine were the hardiest. The ground-cover percentage of grass-legume mixtures in the second growing season was substantially increased by using lime and fertilizer. Mixtures comprised partly of fescue were the most satisfactory.

"The significant facts in the problem of the relation between the production of crude petroleum, and the ever-increasing demand for petroleum products are that in spite of continually increasing production, improvements in methods of refining and utilization, and heavy increases in imports, demands grow still more rapidly and we seem always faced with a shortage at hand or lust ahead. On the other hand, our foremost authorities warn um of entirely inadequate domestic reserves. Looking abroad we find some large fields and many of speculative promise, 'tut the situation is complicated by international relations and demands by other countries which promise to be even more insistent than oars. This is the situation, then. We can not rely upon our own Crude Petroleum to meet the Ever Increasing Demand for Petroleum Products.I wish to follow this somewhat alarming statement by saying at once that the Bureau of Mines is not pessimistic in facing this situation. To my mind those who discuss the oil situation may be placed in three categories; the pessimists, the optimists, and the super-optimists. The pessimists I call those who see darkly and will concede no possibility of solution. According to them a few years will see the automobiles piled in windrows of 'dilapidated junk, I have no sympathy with this point of view and deem it vicious and entirely unwarranted.The optimists I term those who believe that there is a solution and that we shall be able to meet all of our reasonable requirements for as far into the future as can be foreseen, yet who recognizes that this desired end can not be attained without prevision and energetic effort.The super-optimists are those who will say to you, ""There is nothing to this talk of shortage, whenever we have needed oil we have always found it and always will."" To these gentlemen the possibility of an inadequate supply of oil is as incomprehensible as the possibility of the extinction of the passenger pigeon was to the early settlers who saw flocks that hid the sun for days during their passage. The passenger pigeon disappeared within two generations thereafter, and I deem this point of view as being perhaps more vicious than that of the extreme pessimist. It seems to me it is nothing less than improvidence lulling us into a false sense of security. There is an old proverb to the effect that ""The Lord helps him who helps himself."" I believe that we shall solve the oil problem, but I do not think it will be solved by vague optimism. It is going to call for our most energetic efforts and I believe we shall have to do a lot of ""helping ourselves."""

"INTRODUCTION Among the hazards that may attend the use of Diesel engines in mines, tunnels, or other underground operations the presence of harmful or objectionable constituents in the exhaust gas must receive due consideration to prevent the formation of unsafe or unhealthful working environments in these places. Previous reports of this series have presented discussions of the composition of exhaust gas from engines in proper mechanical condition, 6/ the effect of adding some of the exhaust gas to the intake air of the engine, 7/ the effect of operation in atmospheres containing natural gas, 8/ and the effect on exhaust-gas composition of conditions that influence the characteristics of fuel injection in Diesel engines. In all these studies the properties of the fuels used were in general conformity with specifications usually recommended by the manufacturers of Diesel engines. In evaluating the physiological significance of the various components of the exhaust in these experiments, the toxic or objectionable gases determined were carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, and aldehydes. Because of the low sulfur content of' these fuels, compounds such as sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide were not determined, although in discussion of the test results attention was directed to the fact that if fuels of higher sulfur content were used, the concentration of such compounds in the exhaust would become a significant factor in establishing the quantity of ventilating air required to furnish satisfactory dilut1on of the exhaust gas in underground working places."

Three -dimensional boundary value problems are difficult to solve. Indeed, while the separation of the scalar wave equation can be effected in 11 different coordinate systems, an analytic solution requires that the boundaries, both external and internal, possess the same symmetry as the coordinate system. Numerical methods are thus of great importance for the solution of such problems; however, despite the availability of high-speed, large memory digital computers , the solution to a significant three -dimensional problem is by no means trivial. It is unfortunate that the results reported here by Jones are invalid. Jones discusses a model in which a three-dimensional island lies off a linear coastline where all the interfaces lie in the coordinate planes in a Cartesian system. A downward plane em wave polarized with the electric field parallel to the linear coastline, and two of the islands coast, is incident downward. This, of course, requires that the incident electric field is perpendicular to the other faces of the idealized Cartesian island. The significant equation used by Jones for his finite difference calculations is [ ] where n2 = sµ? . is the conductivity, µ=µo is the permeability of the appropriate medium, and w is the angular frequency of a Fourier component of the incident field. We see that the displacement current term is omitted, which is an excellent approximation for the parameters of interest in this model. In the similar equation for the y- component of the diffusion equation, the same considerations which we are about to discuss are equally valid. It can be seen from the equation that the field components are related and thus any errors introduced will be propagated into all three components. The Bureau of Mines has recently collected two samples of crude oil from wells in the Greasewood Flat, area of northeastern Colorado. Sample 31310 was taken from the Continental Oi1 Co.'s well Briggs No. 1 which came in on September 27,7.931, with a maximum production of 940 barrels per day. Sample 31311 was taken from the Reiter-Foster Oil Co.'s well Ida Johnson No. 1 which came in on August 24, 1931 with a maximum production of approximately 1000 barrels per day. These two samples of crude oil are typical "intermediate base" crude oils according to the classification defined by Smith and Lane. The characteristics of these two samples, as shown by the Hempel analyses, indicate that they are almost identical. They have a very low sulphur content, and the residuum has a low carbon-residue content which would indicate that they are excellent crude oils for refining. Crude oils yielding a residuum which has a carbon-residue content of 4 per cent or less usually make good material for the manufacture of cylinder stocks. The pour points of the samples and the cloud test of the fractions obtained from the vacuum distillation indicate that the Greasewood Flat oil contains considerable wax. The high wax content would cause some difficulty in transmitting this oil through a pipe fine during extreme cold weather.

The following additional studies are recommended: 1. Future development of the magnetic sludge process should involve optimization of the process variables; these include stirring rate, sludge heating time, aeration rate, method of preliminary sludge dewatering, and the effects of magnetic separation for final sludge processing. In addition, the matter of amenability of coal mine waters to treatment should be considered more thoroughly by means of a more comprehensive literature review as well as actual tests on mine drainage samples. 2. The technique of sludge freezing should be explored further. Emphasis should be given to conservation of energy in the process, and the filtration characteristics of the resulting sludges should be evaluated. 3. Further studies should be conducted on the feasibility of the CO2-addition approach to mine drainage sludge densification. The filtration characteristics of product sludges should be evaluated, and the possibility of recovering and recycling the residual alkalinity of the sludge, either directly as CaCO3 or as CaO plus CO2 after calcination, should also be explored further. 4. Efforts should be made to develop cost data for the conceptual processes involving magnetic sludge formation, sludge freezing, and C02 pretreatment, with the purpose of selecting at least one of these processes for further testing at a field site. 5. The use of inexpensive waste materials (e.g. fly ash, "red dog," slag) as sludge additives, possibly in conjunction with coagulant aids, should be considered further. Results of the present studies have indicated that such materials, employed in relatively large amounts, increase the density and enhance the filterability of sludges from lime neutralization of coal mine drainage. The use of pulverized blast furnace slag in this regard appears particularly promising, and studies should be made to ascertain its availability, relative cost, residual alkalinity, and behavior as an additive in conventional mine drainage treatment processes involving lime neutralization and aeration.

This publication comprises tables listing friction loss for a flexible, spiral-reinforced circular ventilation tubing system. The tables were constructed with the following parameters: a friction factor of 62 X 10-10, 10-foot sections of tubing ranging in total length from 100 to 550 feet, air quantities ranging from 1,000 to 15,000 cfm, and one to four 90° bends in the tubing. The aim of this publication is to improve ventilation tubing analysis and to provide a method of proper fan selection.

This circular is part IV of the third paper (entitled "Sand and Gravel Excavation") of a series summarizing the technical problems involved in the production and preparation of sand and gravel. Part I discussed the use of power shovels, draglines, and excavator cranes; part II discussed the use of power scrapers, slackline cableway excavators and hydraulic monitors; and part III discussed the use of hydraulic, clamshell, ladder, and dipper dredges. This circular discusses haulage equipment in general, particularly the use of industrial cars with locomotives or hoists as the motive power. Part V, to follow, will discuss the use of other types of haulage equipment.

I do not regard the criticism by Rankin of my work as valid or even meaningful. I strongly reject the assertion by Rankin that my results are invalid. As stated in my paper, the equation to solve (in e. m.u. ) is: [ ] where n2 =4 ps? . This may be rewritten as three scalar equations in Cartesian coordinates, one of which is [ ] The equation to be solved is the diffusion equation, and it is not appropriate to consider waves in this context. In the method a point-wise solution to the problem is approximated. As discussed in my paper the approach taken at discontinuities in conductivity is to choose the normal component of [E] at the discontinuity as the average of the normal components on either side of the discontinuity. This is similar to the well-known assumption made in obtaining Fourier series representations for piecewise continuous functions (Pipes, 1958; p. 51). In the geophysical problem this means that the discontinuity is approximated by a transition zone, which is a very good approximation for such cases. By using this approach, both the values of the function and its derivatives give a good estimate for those associated with the physical situation. It is not apparent and Rankin has not shown that "all the field components and the derivatives are grossly distorted in the region about the boundary" for geophysically realistic situations. He has given no evidence to support his assertation that the results are "invalid". Although Rankin declares that one cannot calculate the electric components from the magnetic, in his discussion he has not stated why this is so. After once calculating the magnetic components the electric components may be calculated, but one must insure that the initial solution is accurate enough to prevent significant round-off errors.

Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis is the leading cause of death due to occupational illness among coal miners. This disease is caused by miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust. A Personal Dust Monitor has recently been developed to provide near real time feedback to miners regarding the number of milligrams of respirable coal mine dust in the air they breathe. This paper was prepared by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to document coal miners’ reactions to this new device, and how they make use of the information it provides. Structured interviews were conducted with 30 coal miners at four mines. A four-stage conceptual model of miners’ decision processes with respect to how they interpret and respond to the dust exposure numbers from their personal dust monitor is proposed. The stages are: Diagnosis, Action Planning and Intervention, Evaluation, and Institutionalization. The interview responses provide considerable support for the model. Most miners paid attention to Personal Dust Monitor feedback and made efforts to reduce their dust exposure. Their efforts included: changing where they positioned themselves, making ventilation system improvements, and using respirators more often. The 29 miners who reported having experience wearing both the old and new type of dust monitors were asked which dust sampling system they preferred. Eighteen (62%) preferred the new monitors, 7 (24%) preferred existing monitors, and 4 (14%) had no preference. The most frequently cited advantage of the new monitor is its ability to provide relatively quick feedback on dust exposure. Miners provided several suggestions for improving the design of the instrument.

The cost of reclamation can vary widely, depending on the primary objectives of the restoration activities. statistics in this study originated from State files, publications, and personal communications relating to restoration and pollution control measures for previously mined lands (orphan lands) and active mines. Reclamation of orphan lands is generally considered a public burden and constitutes an economic problem. All work reported here was completed under government contract, by the lowest bidder, with money coming from State and/or Federal funds. Cost would have been substantially lower had the reclamation been concurrent with mining. Several persons connected with some of the projects have observed that costs could probably be reduced by at least one half, if the reclamation had been conducted along with the mining. The expense of clearing and grubbing of volunteer vegetation, disposal of buried trees and brush, loosing of compacted spoil, and re-establishing access to areas could be saved. In addition, a contracting firm doing the work for a government agency would have mobilization costs and receive a profit. Mining companies also are profit conscious and would consider these costs in anticipating their profits (e.g., overhead would be less if reclamation is integrated with mining). The data presented here should serve as a guide for estimating and determining cost ranges, however, it should be recognized that variations exist. Adjustments may be necessary from the standpoint of physical conditions, economic conditions, price changes, and more restrictive requirements of recent surface mining laws. Reclamation conditions, procedures and successes in the eastern United States, particularly in Appalachia, have no bearing on conditions to be expected in the western United States. The situations are wholly different. Reclamation in the West differs from th t in the East, primarily because of aridity especially a during the summer months 1). Because of the many variables and differences between reclamation in eastern and western areas, they will be discussed separately.

Considerable current interest is evident[l,2] in the use of transient electromagnetic methods for subsurface remote sensing. A transient method is discussed which uses a periodic video-type pulse containing a wide frequency range. A video pulse is used as an interrogating signal both for "target" identification and detection for relatively short depth (c 20 meters) applications in soil and soft rock media. If the medium is favorable, e.g., hard rock, greater depth applications appear to be feasible. The same procedures would be applicable for deep geological exploration but would require a substantial reduction in frequency and increase in target size. It should be noted that video pulse generators with 35 kv peak voltage and nanoseconds base widths are now within the state-of-the-art, thus significant power over broad spectral ranges is possible. In the design of a video pulse sounding system, 5 main problem areas can be identified; 1 ) selection of the pulse shape or spectral content of the video pulse, 2) design of a radiating structure which effectively couples such a pulse into the medium, 3) isolation of the radiating and receiving mechanisms, 4) realistically accounting for the dispersion and attentuation of the medium and the air-medium interface, and 5) interpretation or processing of the received signal waveform. Each of these problem areas will be discussed and illustrated with experimental and/or theoretical results. The Video Pulse Selection of the proper video pulse signal is dictated by 3 considerations, the maximum desired depth of penetration, the attenuation of the medium and the required resolution and size of the target. For a lossy medium, penetration and resolution are clearly at cross purposes and a compromise is necessary. The exact nature of the compromise is dictated by the application, but the spectrum of the video pulse should not contain any frequencies higher than the predicted cut-off, i.e., that frequency which is attenuated to the threshold level of the receiver. APPENDIX D DEVELOPMENT AND EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATION OF ACOUSTIC SEAL CHECKER THEORY 1. Introduction In Section 7 of the report the acoustic seal checker concept was described in a general manner and the parameters which affect the signal level at the microphone were discussed briefly. In this appendix the theoretical basis will be presented and the experimental program described which permitted the extension of the theory into practice. The basic goal of the acoustic seal checker is to relate the reduction in sound pressure level to the size of the residual hole in the fly ash barrier. The smallest hole size that may be measured is determined by the signal to noise ratio, where the noise in this case includes the ambient noise in the mine, the internal microphone noise and the sound transmitted from the acoustic source via the flanking paths through corridors adjacent to the one being sealed. The latter source of noise can be discriminated against, at the expense of increased complexity of the acoustic system, by employing a pulsed source and pulse gating of the microphone signal set to accept sound via the barrier path and to reject the delayed flanking path signals. In order that the acoustic system be insensitive to precise source and microphone location and to permit assessment of system performance on an acoustic power flow basis, a broad frequency band of pseudo-random noise is emitted by the loudspeaker source. "INTRODUCTION The Phelps-Dodge Corp. New Cornelia Branch open-pit copper mine operated without a fatality in the drilling and blasting department from December 13, 1937, to April 1, 1947, and continuing.Between the dates named the explosives crews had a total of 746,520 man-hours of exposure and handled 12,000 tons of explosives, over 770,000 detonators, 2,300,000 feet of fuse, and 7,700,000 feet of Primacord in loading holes to break 116,780,000 tons of material.It is the purpose of this paper to record the procautions taken to insure safe handling of explosives at this operation where safety is definitely a matter of forethought rather than chance.GENERAL INFORMATIONThe New Cornelia Branch open-pit mine operates on a large, low-grade, disseminated-copper deposit about one-half mile south of Ajo, Ariz. The pit is approximately oval; the ore body being some 4,800 feet long and 2,750 feet wide. Ore is mined with electric shovels loading into railroad cars. All benches in- the pit are 40 feet in height except two, which are 60 feet high.The New Cornelia ore body differs from most porphyry-copper deposits in being hard and siliceous. In common with the other low-grade porphyry-copper deposits, continued operation is possible only with economical handling of large tonnages. This has necessitated a great deal of study in the evolution of a safe and efficient method of handling the large quantities of explosives needed in breaking this hard-rock material."

FOLLOWING the rapid recovery of previous years, the U.S. economy continued the upward trend and moved forward moderately and sporadically during the first half of 1962. There was a slow-down in the recovery rate, which was especially notable in the third quarter. The economy recovered in the fourth quarter, and by the end of 1962 the gross national product amounted to $555 billion, a new high, 7 percent above that of 1961. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all achieved new peaks, but unemployment continued high and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to us~ its full potential; 1962 was a good year, but not good enough. During 1962, all industrial production climbed from the low in January to a high in late summer which lasted through the fall, and declined slightly at yearend. Mining production followed this pattern closely and most sectors were approaching record highs. Most minerals gained in value and volume of production. The steel-associated minerals group was the only exception, and it sustained a small net loss. The nonfuel minerals industry opened the year at a high level, maintained this high level until late summer, with the peak in May, and drifted downward toward the end of the year. The gains recorded by nonferrous metal mining partly offset the loss of ferrous metal mining, resulting in a small gain for metal mining as a whole. A tube-wall reactor with a Raney nickel catalyst deposited on the outer wall of the tube by flame spraying is effective in the practically complete conversion of 3H2+1CO synthesis gas to a high-Btu gas (methane) at an hourly space velocity of 7,000 volumes of gas (NTP) per hour per volume of annular volume. Partially reacted synthesis gas containing an appreciable amount of methane can also be treated in this reactor to increase the heating value to over 900 Btu per cubic foot. Excellent heat removal through the metal wall to a coolant and temperature control were obtained. The heat transfer co-efficient from the catalyst to the coolant was about 275 Btu per hour per square foot per ° F. Synthesis tests were conducted with tubes 1.2 inches in ad by 6 inches long, and 1.3 inches in od by 36 inches long. When operating at a synthesis gas rate of 100 to 120 scfh per square foot of catalyst-coated tube, catalyst life was long enough to realize a catalyst cost for the raw Raney nickel alloy of about 0.3 cent per 1,000 cubic feet of pipeline gas (900 to 950 Btu per scf). Gas recycling at ratios of 1:1 to 3:1 was effective in increasing conversion and in extending the life of the catalyst to about 16 weeks. In cost and in operating characteristics the tube-wall reactor compares favorably with the fluidized-bed and hot-gas-recycle reactor systems for the synthesis of high-Btu gas from H2+CO.
