This report presents a Bureau of Mines study on the time-dependent behavior of coal measure rocks for future implementation in stability analysis and safety evaluation of in-mine rock structures. This initial study focused on moisture adsorption rate and strength degradation of shales in Pennsylvanian coal-bearing strata in the Illinois Basin. A reaction of clay minerals in Illinois shales with atmospheric water vapor was hypothesized as the adsorption and strength degradation mechanism. Part of energy exchange between shales and the environment was attributed to a free energy controlled by pore pressure of the rock and partial pressure in the environment. The relationships between adsorption versus time and strength degradation versus moisture content were derived and correlated with the experimental data. Partial saturation at various levels of relative humidity occurs within approximately 2 weeks at room temperature. The strength of shales tested decreases linearly with increasing moisture content. When the moisture exceeds 7 pct of the dry weight, these Illinois shales become unstable. To this end, the moisture content is a good predictor of rock strength for shales.

ALTHOUGH the quantity of material handled at metal and nonmetal mines in the United States in 1962 was 2.7 billion tons, the same as in 1961, a larger proportion was waste. At metal mines, crude ore production declined 1 million tons and waste output rose more than 18 million tons; at nonmetal mines crude ore production declined 6 million tons and waste output rose 36 million tons. Copper and iron ore producers increased their share of crude ore and material handled from about three-fourths to four-fifths of the national metals total, and sand and gravel and stone producers in-creased their share of the nonmetals total, also from three-fourths to four-fifths. Six States-Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, and Utah-each handled more than 100 million tons of ore and waste, and together they accounted for 43 percent of the U.S. total. When the large-volume construction materials (sand and gravel and stone) were excluded from the totals, four States-Arizona, Florida, Minnesota, and Utah-supplied over half of the material handled.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed an improved method for determining dissolved helium in water in the concentration range of 4.0 x 10-8 to 270 X 10-8 cm3 He (STP)/cm3 H2O. The method is a modification of a previously reported method that was developed for analrzing surface and subsurface waters in geochemical survey work. Water samples are collected in SOD-cm stainless steel cylinders, and the dissolved gases in a sample are extracted into an evacuated cylinder of equal volume. After addition of 30 psig of nitrogen containing less than 2 ppb helium to the extracted gases, the resulting mixture is analyzed for helium using a helium-tuned mass spectrometer. The helium content of the water sample is determined from an empirical calibration that is established by analyzing standard solutions of helium in water. The accuracy of the method is ±7 pct for helium-in-water concentrations above 10 x 10-8 cm3 He (STP)/cm3 H2O.

Losses of alloying metals in furnace flue dusts, grinding swarfs, and mill scale produced during the manufacture of stainless steel are substantial. About 25 million lb Cr, 8.7 million lb Ni, and 150,000 lb Mo and other critical metals can be made available annually for recycling by a process developed by the Bureau of Mines. Stainless steel wastes pelletized with a portland cement binder were reduced in a small electric-arc furnace by a two-stage process to produce a recyclable alloy containing Cr, Ni, Mn, and Fe. The initial reduction was with carbon; the second, with ferrosilicon. Results are compared with previously reported laboratory induction melting tests. A 2,000-lb demonstration test of the process in a commercial electric-arc furnace is also described. Data are also presented on three 1,500-lb tests made using various slag conditions in the electric-arc furnace. Recoveries up to 99 pct of the Fe, Cr, and Ni contents of stainless steel wastes were obtained in using the process.

A dilute sulfuric-acid leach was developed for extracting lead and copper from lead blast furnace mattes and the chemistry was defined. The possible application of Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans to the problem of salvaging lead and copper from blast furnace mattes was also investigated. Operating conditions were varied to determine their effect on the oxidation and hence extraction of lead and copper from the matte. Conditions varied were temperature, pH, reaction time, aeration in the slurry, and particle size of the matte. A set of optimum conditions were developed that resulted in maximum lead and copper sulfide oxidation. Tests employing these optimum conditions resulted in 82.3 percent of the lead and 98.7 percent of the copper being extracted by a dilute acid leach, while maximum lead and copper extracted using F. ferrooxidans was 69.8 percent of the lead and 78.4 percent of the copper. Tests conducted with a different sample of blast furnace matte indicated that the dilute acid leach might have wide application in extracting lead and copper from other such blast furnace mattes.

Develop a dry dust collector suitable for working faces and belt transfer paints. Approach A filter cartridge with a reverse-pulse, self-cleaning system has been mounted in-to a low profile unit requiring electric power only. How It Works Dust-laden air entering the in-let end of the collector passes through the two inline filter elements. When the elements load to a pre-selected pres-sure drop, they are automatically pulse-cleaned by a "backflush" method using compressed air. When the elements are pulse-cleaned, caked dust material on the filter surface is released, and falls away as lumps. Dust is removed from the collector by an auger mechanism. Features of the collector are: (1) unit is completely self-contained, (2) built-in air compressor for pulse-cleaning, (3) cleaning cycle initiates automatically at a preset restriction, (4) automatic auger discharge of collected dust, (5) detachable extension auger for transporting collected dust, (6) "dust leak" indicator light, and (7) "change filter element II warning light. The collector has been designed as permissible although approval has not yet been granted.

The optimum situation in sealing the soil with latex would be to locate the sealant at the depth where natural permeability is lowest, and to narrow distribution of the latex to a film. To ascertain how closely we were achieving these objectives it was necessary to devise a method to measure the concentration of latex in soil. A number of methods were explored and two were used in actual field tests. SBR latex tagged with c14 was prepared and used to determine the distribution of polymer in the soil. The latex was made by copolymerizing a mixture of radioactive and normal styrene with butadiene in bottles by conventional methods. Average particle size was 600 Å. Diluted aliquots had 1.40 microcuries radioactivity per gram of latex. Tagged latex was mixed with soil in a range of proportions from 0.01 to 0.25% by weight to develop a calibration curve. Analyses of soil in the laboratory and from the field were determined by comparison with this master curve. Styrene-containing polymers have a characteristic peak at 700 cm-1 but crosslinked SBR is not soluble in solvents normally used in infra-red spectroscopy, e.g., carbon disulfide. We developed a method for solubilizing the crosslinked polymer by stirring overnight at room temperature a soil sample in chloroform with t-butyl hydroperoxide and osmium tetroxide. The filtered chloroform residue was dried to constant weight, thoroughly mixed and pressed into a KBr pellet, and concentration was determined by measuring the absorption at 700 cm-1. "INTRODUCTION Preliminary reports by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ and by the Federal Geological Survey 4/ suggested that exploration would discover substantial reserves of minable ore in the Contact mine, Grant County, New Mexico. During February and March 1943, a sampling program was conducted on this property under the direction of the author. This was art of a general survey of the manganese districts of southwestern New Mexico.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as practicable soon as after its conclusion. The Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocer, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. S. Dean, assistant director. With respect to this report, special acknowledgment is due to C. H. Johnson, district engineer for New Mexico, and E. D. High-temperature thermodynamic data have, in recent years, become increasingly important for the extractive metallurgist. The extraction of metals from their ores previously was based on trial and error methods, involving hours of testing and often costly equipment fabrication. Using thermodynamic data it is frequently possible to predict the feasibility of a proposed metallurgical process as well as the optimum operating conditions for the process with reasonable accuracy. Such predictions can save consider-able tim~ and expense. Widespread use of thermodynamic analyses has been handicapped by lack of dependable experimental data. Investigators, notably K. K. Kelley (4)4. have devoted many years to determining and compiling such data. These investigators, although prolific in their production of thermodynamic values, have been unable to meet all the needs of industry and other branches of science. This becomes obvious when one considers the aeronautical and nuclear fields, in which previously unimportant, therefore uninvestigated, substances have become of prime importance.

Descriptions are given of the techniques and apparatus used by the Bureau of Mines for determinations of flat plate ignition quenching distance and minimum spark ignition energy. The descriptions include discussions of reaction vessel materials, shapes, and sizes and discussions of electrode configurations. Spherical, hemispherical, or flat plate electrodes are recommended. The preferred metal in electrodes and electrode supports is stainless steel; the flat plate electrodes incorporate flanges of low electrical conductivity which are most frequently formed from glass. Various aspects of the electrical energy supply system are discussed and suitable arrangements of components are indicated. The concept of a thermal relaxation time is introduced as a basis for the choice of a minimum interspark time during the testing of a gas mixture. The following indicate the varied conditions under which these tech were utilized: Mixture pressures between 10 mm Hg and 45 psig, initial temperatures between -78° and +198° C, and gaseous mixtures representing wide ranges of cL.. D reactivity and corrosiveness. Minimum ignition energies were determined which varied from about 10-7 joule to nearly 103 joule.

PURPOSE This report provides an integrative review of 52 recently published research reports that examine the associations between long working hours and illnesses, injuries, health behaviors, and performance. The report is restricted to a description of the findings and methods and is not intended as an exhaustive discussion of all important issues related to long working hours. Findings and methods are summarized as reported by the original authors, and the study methods are not critically evaluated for quality. SUMMARY In 16 of 22 studies addressing general health effects, overtime was associated with poorer perceived general health, increased injury rates, more illnesses, or increased mortality. One meta-analysis of long work hours suggested a possible weak relationship with preterm birth. Overtime was associated with unhealthy weight gain in two studies, increased alcohol use in two of three studies, increased smoking in one of two studies, and poorer neuropsychological test performance in one study. Some reports did not support this trend, finding no relationship between long work hours and leisure-time physical activity (two of three studies) and no relationship with drug abuse (one study). A pattern of deteriorating performance on psycho physiological tests as well as injuries while working long hours was observed across study findings, particularly with very long shifts and when 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work a week. Four studies that focused on effects during extended shifts reported that the9thto 12th hours of work were associated with feelings of decreased alertness and increased fatigue, lower cognitive function, declines in vigilance on task measures, and increased injuries. Two studies examining physicians who worked very long shifts reported deterioration on various measures of cognitive performance. When 12-hour shifts combined with other work-related demands, a pattern of more adverse findings was detected across studies. Six studies examining 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work per week reported increases in health complaints, deterioration in performance, or slower pace of work. Two studies com-paring 8- and 12-hour schedules during day and night shifts reported that 12-hour night shifts were associated with more physical fatigue, smoking, or alcohol use. Two studies examining start times for 12-hour shifts reported that decrements in alertness or more health complaints were associated with early 6:00 a.m. start times. One study examining 12-hour shifts in hot work environments reported a slower pace of work as compared with shorter shifts. Another study examining high workloads during 12-hour shifts showed increased discomfort and deterioration in performance as compared with shorter shifts. More definitive statements about differences between 8-hour and 12-hour shifts are difficult because of the inconsistencies in the types of work schedules examined across studies. Work schedules differed by the time of day (i.e., day, evening, night), fixed versus rotating schedules, speed of rotation, direction of rotation, number of hours worked per week, number of consecutive days worked, number of rest days, and number of weekends off. All of these factors could have interacted with overtime and influenced study results. Tables 16 through 19 continue the series of providing the world merchant fleet distribution by type of vessel and the ranking of the major fleets by country of registry. Table 20 this year provides a summary of the world's liquid gas carrier fleet. These vessels are included in the totals given for the world's tanker fleet, but gives a breakdown demonstrating the growth of the importance of natural gas in the world's energy commodity consumption. Panama and Suez Canals Tables 21 and 22 provide the latest available information on the transit of mineral commodities through the Panama Canal, by number of vessels, direction, and the commodities transported. Although the number of vessels transiting the Panama Canal dropped slightly (0.5%) between 1989 and 1990, the total amount of cargo moved rose by 3.6% and the amount of mineral commodities moved rose by 7.2%.

Included in the program of the Rare and Precious Metals Station, Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines at Reno, Nev., are investigations of treatment methods for ores representative of various mining districts throughout the country. The samples received for this work may come from areas only recently explored or from newly discovered ore deposits in older mining districts. The present investigation deals with a case of the latter type, the. ample having come from a section that has a past record of considerable precious. metals production. The application of current treatment methods to this type of ore seems to offer excellent possibilities of satisfactory economic results. Definite identification of the silver mineral in this ore asthe chloride cerargyrite, AgCl, adds considerable interest to, the investigation, as in many cases where silver occurs in comparatively small amounts in an ore it is not possible to identify the particular mineral carrying the silver or else it is contained in or combined with other more common minerals. Cerargyrite is the "horn silver" of the bananza period and is mentioned in many accounts of pioneer mining of high-grade ores The occurrence of this mineral in finely disseminated form it a low-grade ore is believed to be unusual. The sample investigated was obtained from the' Bullfrog District neat Beatty, southwest Nye County, Nevada. The ore contained 16.7 ounces of silver per ton of ore, 0.007 ounce gold, and 0.32 percent copper in a silicious gangue, with accessory minerals, including iron oxides and scorodite; the hydrous iron arsenate.

The work of the operational communication systems' group dealt with a range of communication needs and functions within mines, primarily along haulageways, to and within sections up to the working face itself, and in mine shafts. A mixture of communication techniques and hardware is needed to satisfy this variety of communication needs within the differing environments encountered in U.S. mines. Substantial progress, both experimental and theoretical, has been made in recent years towards developing alternative communication systems suitable for use in mines which are based on "guided" waves, including wire-less (waveguide-like propagation in mine tunnels) and wire-based systems (leaky coaxial cables or wires) . Major priorities identified for further work needed to confirm (or deny) the applicability, and refine the operational specifications of promising communication systems for mine use include: Short-Term Projects o Cost/performance analyses of promising leaky coaxial cable and UHF radio communication systems which require further data from: - Experimental investigation under U.S. mine conditions of the performance of potentially applicable leaky coaxial cable communication systems developed in Europe (France, Belgium, and the U.K). - Cost estimates on these coaxial cable communication systems. - Measurements of UHF radio propagation in low-coal mines. - Investigation of the influence of obstacles (e.g. shuttle cars and section machinery) in the entries on UHF radio propagation in mines. o Investigation of the problems of transmitter and receiver coupling and termination matching associated with the two-way propagation of low frequency radio waves in hoist shafts.

"INTRODUCTIONMany of the facilities and much of the equipment available to the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust are highly specialized and therefore, unique to the universities associated with the Center as illustrated in FIGURES 30 through 39.For example, a sample bank of 1300 U.S. coal specimens housed in the Coal Research Section, Deike Building of The Pennsylvania State University has been characterized for physical, elemental, mineralogical and maceral compositions. The results of this research have been used to initiate a study of the relationship between pneumoconioses and coal properties. Selected samples from this bank have been used in animal (primate) studies at the Milton S. Hershey (Penn State) and West Virginia University Medical Centers. These laboratory facilities for research in the medical and biological disciplines is state-of-the-art and includes a primate colony where dust research is currently underway. The Materials Research Laboratory and the Rock Mechanics Laboratory at PSU, and the Mechanical Systems Design and Control Laboratory, the Rock Mechanics Laboratory and the Mine Electronic System Laboratory at WVU are equipped for fundamental research on dust generation and characterization. While the majority of respirable dust research projects fall into these two categories, dust generation and characterization and interaction of dust and lung, there are other laboratory facilities available to the Center which are unparalleled in the type of equipment and expert personnel that they contribute to the program. The Mine Particle Laboratory located at the University of Minnesota and the Diesel Engine Laboratory at Michigan Technological University are examples. They house equipment and instrumentation that is unique to these facilities. much of it having been developed specifically for dust research by the research scientists there. The dust collection equipment and the fine particles measurement, characterization and analysis apparatus are essential to research in the areas of dust collection, particle characterization and diesel particulates. In addition to university laboratories, the research facilities of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are available to the Center through its relationship With West Virginia University."

The Bell mine operated by the Warner Co. at Bellefonte, Pa., has an annual production of about 600,000 short tons of high-grade limestone. Since 1924, shrinkage stoping has been the mining method. Horizontal, long-hole diamond-drilling for production in stopes was started with one machine in July 1946. It is now standard practice. The burden on the holes is 10 feet. Diamond bits are noncoring EX-size in both concave and pilot types. The two types have little difference in drilling speed at the Bell mine. The diamond drills are mounted on 3-inch single-screw columns. Diamond drilling shows a marked increase in efficiency at the Bell mine, compared to percussion drilling, with respect to tons broken per drill shift, tons broken per foot of hole, and tons broken per pound of explosive. The advantages of diamond-drilling blast-holes also include (a) improved safety, greater footage per drill shift, (c) better frag- mentation of the broken, stone, and (d) reduction in amount of barring down required in stopes because the working places are limited to slots which have a relatively small area.

Computer programs are presented that provide mine electrical systems based on computer modeling for design and safety analysis suitable for large or small computer systems and handheld calculators. Bureau of Mines research has resulted in load-flow, fault, grounding, reliability, short-circuit, transient, and cable ampacity computer models that enable mine power system engineers to analyze their system or to design a system. This report describes the capabilities of the program.

Understanding methane emissions in underground coal mines is critical for a safe and productive mine. In addition to reasonable estimation of initial coalbed reservoir parameters, it is also crucial that changes in effective stress due to mining and pore pressure reduction are taken into account due to their effects on porosity and permeability. Primary parameters for estimation of emissions or modeling of the mining environment for this purpose are porosity and permeability which can change dramatically as a result of stress redistribution associated with mining and gas desorption from a large coal volume. These parameters affect the emission rates and ventilation requirements, as well as water inflow into the working environment. Stopping leakage, on the other hand, is a secondary stress dependent factor in estimation of emissions, as convergence of the roof and floor strata, compromising the integrity of the stopping, may result in leakage, making prediction of ventilation requirements difficult. This paper aims to examine the effects of porosity and permeability changes of the coal seam on methane emissions in an underground continuous miner section. The models were developed and executed in a dynamic fashion to simulate an advancing section. Through this process, the changes of effective stress in coal, particularly their change paths, on porosity and permeability were incorporated into the models and methane emissions, concentrations, air requirements, water inflow and possible leakage from the stoppings were investigated using a conventional coalbed methane reservoir model.

Determine the effectiveness of remining operations in reducing contaminant load (acidity, iron, and sulfate) of discharges emanating from abandoned surface and underground coal mines. Background Until the implementation of remining initiatives, most States had regulations that held the operator remining an abandoned site responsible for preexisting acid mine drainage (AMD) discharges. For example, if a mining. company wanted to remine an area hydrologically connected to an existing AMD discharge, the company became responsible, as soon as the site was activated, for treating that discharge to meet effluent standards. If the mining operation improved the quality of the discharge, but the discharge failed to meet effluent standards, the company was held accountable for perpetual treatment. Because of this regulation, most mine operators avoided abandoned sites with minable coal reserves and AMD discharges. However, changes in remining legislation allow coal companies to be released from treatment liability as long as the post-remining pollution load does not exceed the pre-remining level.
