Atlantic seaboard refining and marketing companies , dependent largely upon other producing and refining areas for the crude and refined petroleum needed to meet the demand for petroleum products within the Atlantic Coast States , reported an increase in 1929 receipts of 2,542,000 barrels of crude petroleum and 13,479,000 barrels of gasoline over the quantities received during the preceding year . The relatively large expansion in gasoline receipts undoubtedly resulted from the unexpected increase in gasoline consumption which characterized the petroleum industry during 1929. Gasoline receipts from California increased 6,354,000 barrels and shipments from foreign countries were 5,381,000 barrels in excess of the 1928 figures , while receipts from Gulf Coast ports , the major source of outside supply, declined 811,000 barrels . Shipments of domestic crude oil by tanker from Gulf Coast ports during 1929 continued the average annual increase of approximately 7,000,000 barrels which has been recorded during the five years of this annual survey . These shipments have increased from 72,556,000 barrels during 1925 to 99,828,000 barrels during 1929. Shioments of Mid- Continent crude by pipe- line to Atlantic Coast refineries have , on the other hand , dropped from 11,903,000 barrels in 1925 to 1,409,000 barrels during 1929. Receipts of foreign crude oil declined 1,461,000 barrels from the preceding year . : Gasoline demand within the Atlantic Coast area reached a total of 123,345,000 barrels , an increase of 15.7 per cent over 1928. Gasoline production increased 4,157,000 barrels , while tanker receipts were nearly 11,000,000 barrels larger than in 1928. Indicated shioments from Appalachian refineries were somewhat larger than in the preceding year . Gasoline production showed an average of 33.5 per cent of the crude throughout , as compared with 31.5 per cent in 1928 and 32.7 per cent in 1927. Cracking operations accounted for 44.6 per cent of the gasoline produced , as compared with 40.6 per cent in 1928 and 35.3 per cent in 1927. Gas oil and fuel oil production averaged 52.8 per cent of the crude throughput , as compared with 55.1 per cent in 1928 and 49.5 per cent in 1927 , the decline reflecting the smaller quantities of foreign crude refined during the year .

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines study, production trends have been analyzed for 82 gob gas ventholes on 7 longwall panels in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed, Pennsylvania. Cumulative production from individual holes was found to vary considerably, ranging from 0.03 x 106 to 10.1 x 106 m3. Peak production rates were generally about 0.03 x 106 to 0.06 x 106 m3/d, but rates over 0.10 x 1@ m3/d were observed. The variability of gas production from individual holes can be attributed to several factors, including completion practices and problems, the extent of fracture development in the strata above the extracted panel, water production, and location on the panel. Of particular significance is hole location. Holes on the ends of the panels, where overburden strata are in tension because of the support of the surrounding pillars, were generally the highest and longest producers. This observation led to the experimental placement of gob gas ventholes in the zone of tension along the margin of a panel, instead of in the traditional centerline location, which is in compression. Analysis of 7 months of gas production data indicates that the experimental near-margin holes produced 77 pct more gas than did centerline holes on the same panel.

Electron diffraction and electron microscopy were used to determine the unit cell parameters of garnierite [(Ni,Mg)3 Si2O5 (OH)4] and to examine its crystal habit. Bundles of ribbons, many less than 200 A. in cross section, make up the bulk specimen of the garnierite Electron diffraction revealed the unit cell to be monoclinic. Unit cell parameters were: a, 5.33 A,; b, 9.23 A.; c, 14.96 A.; and ß, 94°441.

Many western ores containing ;old, silver, and copper can be mined and concentrated at a profit only when the recovery of those metals is high and treatment costs are low. Usually, ores containing easily dissolved copper minerals, or copper minerals that become soluble to some extent through oxidation during treatment, present a real problem in cyanidation. Copper cyanide compounds are formed that tend to 'precipitate and that cannot yield regenerated cyanide and metallic copper on contact with zinc. This results not only in some loss of copper through solution in cyanide, but in excessive consumption of cyanide above the amount required for the extraction of Gold and silver. Any moans, therefore, of minimizing the: loss of cyanide while at the same time effecting high recoveries of the several values contained in the ore is of wide interest. A sample of typical low-grade ore of gold, silver, and copper, containing copper-sulfide minerals, was obtained from the MacLaren Gold Mines Co., Cooke, Park County, Mont., for laboratory investigation by flotation and cyanidation.

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has classified diesel exhaust as a potential human carcinogen. Though standards for diesel particulate matter (DPM) in the work place have not been established, concern for the health of miners is prompting mine operators to consider methods for reducing worker exposure to diesel exhaust. Approach One of many methods for reducing DPM being investigated by the Bureau of Mines is the use of additives in diesel fuel to improve combustion. Research Results Three fuel additives have been tested in Caterpillar and Deutz diesel engines which are similar to types used in underground mines. One iron-based additive containing ferrous picrate had no effect on emissions. A second iron-based additive containing ferrocene reduced DPM between 5 and 45 pet depending on engine operating conditions. The 37-pct reduction for an 8-minute duty cycle, which includes a wide range of transient loads and speeds, is considered to represent in-mine performance.

Comprehensive ventilation surveys are made to review the adequacy of the mine system with regard to both statutory requirements and/or company policy, to evaluate improvements to the current ventilation system and to plan for £stun expansion. If computer simulation is to be used for these purposes, accurate quantity and pressure measurements become an absolute necessity since the validity of the computer generated output is heavily dependent on the accuracy of the input data. Consequently ventilation surveys that are run to generate input data for computer simu¬lation must use the best data collection procedures to guarantee as accurate results as are possible. These requirements have led to modifications in procedures that are used for routine ventilation surveying. McElroy and Kingery (1957) have recommended that pressures be measured independent of quantities since minor changes in mine conditions have a greater effect on absolute pressure measurements than on quantity measure¬ments. They estimate that, for large mines, a pressure survey may take only 1 to 3 days while the corresponding quantity survey would require 1 to 3 weeks. Although this procedure would undoubtedly lead to more ac¬curate pressure measurements, its use for the development of computer input data is not recommended for the following reasons. Atkinson's equation, H = RQ2, is used in computer oriented analysis to develop the airway resistance, R, based on quantity and pressure loss measure¬ments. It can easily be seen that since R a 1/Q2 and R a H, the effect of errors in quantity measurement is, in fact, more significant than those in pressure measurement. Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) was identified as early as 1918 in Bedford, Indiana in the U.S. Since then much research work has been done around the world in the areas of medical, epidemiological, engineering and legal aspects of HAVS. In Japan, much of the pioneering work in this field has been performed by Dr. Setsuo Maeda and his staff at the National Institute of Industrial Health (NIIH) in Kawasaki. Most recently, reports of work done by this group and by Dr. Ren Dong1 of NIOSH in the U.S., as well as many other suppliers and Japanese practitioners were presented at the 13th Japan Group Meeting on Human Response to Vibration held in Osaka2 during August 3-5, 2005. In this Bureau of Mines report, time-resolved infrared emission spectra and corresponding pressure and temperature histories are reported for large-scale propagations of CH4-air, CH4-air-N2, and CH4-air-CF3Br ignitions in a 12-ft-diam sphere. Absolute spectral radiances were obtained throughout combustion over the 1.6- to 4.8-gym range, and the radiance growth patterns for the H20 (2.5-µm) bands are presented as a function of methane stoichiometry and diluent concentration. Flame temperatures were determined from the C02-band emissions, which approximated unit emissivity shortly after ignition. Burning velocities are also given for some of the test-mixture compositions. Measured flame temperatures were in excellent to fair agreement with theoretical adiabatic values for the CH.-air and CH4-air-N2 mixtures; the best agreement was for the stoichiometric CH4-air mixture. The CH4-air-CF3Br mixtures with =2 pct CF3Br gave poor agreement with theory. The measured temperatures were significantly lower during the early stage of combustion; furthermore, the later stage of combustion was uninhibited and yielded unexpectedly high pressures. Supplemental data from a 2-ft-diam sphere at various initial pressures confirmed that the CF3Br inhibition effectiveness decreases with increased pressure. The possible effects of buoyancy, turbulence, and changing kinetics are discussed.

Comparisons are made between the results of the Buckley-Leverett and Kern solutions, which describe immiscible displacement of oil by gas in a linear system and the results obtained from a less restrictive numerical model. This model takes into account the effect of compressibility of the oil and gas and the effect of allowing changes in the amount of gas in solution in the oil. These effects are best exemplified by imposing large pressure drops across the system. With these large pressure drops, comparison of the model solution with the Buckley-Leverett solution reveals that the Buckley-Leverett solution provides estimates of recoveries at breakthrough of the gas that are too low. In contrast to the model, the Kern solution predicts breakthrough recoveries that are too high. A modification to the Kern solution is presented to facilitate more accurate predictions of recovery at gas breakthrough for gas injection at pressures higher than the saturation pressure of the oil.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines treated mixed and contaminated super alloy scrap by pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods to separate and recover metal values. Best results were obtained by leaching Zn-treated or atomized scrap with HCI-02 at 9SO C and 50 psig 02' This resulted in dissolving approxi-mately 98 pet of the AI, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn while rejecting over 98 pct of the Mo, Nb, Ta, Ti, W, and Zr as an insoluble refractory residue. Chlorine was successfully substituted for HCI to leach Zn-treated scrap but was unsuccessful for leaching atomized scrap. The leaching solution was treated by pH adjustment and hydrothermal precipitation at 2000 C for 4 h to remove AI, Cr, Fe, and other contaminants as a filterable precipitate. Recovery of Co and Ni would be accomplished by solvent extraction and e1ectrowinning. Chromium recovery as a ferroalloy was demonstrated.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), in collaboration with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the mining industry, and seal manufacturers recently conducted a series of full-scale experiments within the underground experimental mine at PRL’s Lake Lynn Laboratory. The purpose of the experiments was toe valuate the explosion-resistant characteristics of several new seal designs for rapid deployment during mine emergencies. These seals can be deployed in 6 to 10 hr and are capable of with standing explosion overpressures in excess of 140 kPa (20 psi). These novel seal designs use available mine materials, do not require conventional rib hitching, and, most importantly, can substantially reduce exposure time for coal miners during sealing and mine recovery operations.

This longitudinal field study was designed to encourage Appalachian coal miners in West Virginia and Pennsylvania to engage in hearing-protection behaviors. Method: Participants were mailed postcards that featured either a positive, negative, or neutral message on the outside of the postcard and a message encouraging hearing protection behaviors on the inside. The first posttest measurement of the effectiveness of the persuasive messages was conducted about a week after the postcards were mailed. The delayed posttest measurement was conducted six weeks later. Results: Responses from 307 coal miners revealed that the positive or neutral messages generated significantly more self-reported hearing protection behaviors than the negative message. Identical results were obtained in a delayed posttest assessment of miners' self-reported hearing protection behaviors. The positive message was also more effective than either the neutral or negative message in preventing defensive mechanisms from emerging over time. Impact on Industry: Positive and neutral messages were convincingly more than negative messages in facilitating self-reported hearing protection behaviors among coal miners. The theoretical study of WF radio communication in coal mines, with particular reference to the rate of loss of signal strength along a tunnel, and from one tunnel to another around a comer is the concern of this paper. Of prime interest are the nature of the propagation mechanism and the prediction of the radio frequency that propagates with the smallest loss. The theoretical results are compared with published measurements. This work was part of an investigation of new ways to reach and extend two-way communications to the key individuals who are highly mobile within the sections and haulageways of coal mines.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYIn connection with a program of research work on coal at its Southern Experiment Station, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, conducts washability studies of samples of coal from coal fields in Alabama and other Southern States in which commercially important deposits of coal occur. The first such study on coal from a bed in the Arkansas field has been completed, and the results are presented in this report.One of the main objectives of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data in connection with the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's limited reserves of good coking coal. Such information is important from the standpoint of conservation in that it facilitates selection of preparation methods that will yield a good grade of coking coal with a minimum of losses of coal in the rejects.The coal on which this report is based was obtained by underground and tipple sampling at the quality mine of the Quality Excelsior Coal Co. about 3 miles east of Hackett, Ark. This mine operates in the Upper Hartshorne bed, which, as the main source of coal in what is known as the Hackett-Excelsior district, yields an excellent grade of low-volatile coking coal, which is marketed at steel plants in Colorado and California. Production from this bed by the major producers in the Hackett Excelsior district was at the rate of about 125,760 tons annually in 1949, according to the Keystone Coal Buyers Manual. 2/In the laboratory, the tipple sample was crushed to 6-inch top size and screened on a 2-inch round-hole screen. The 2-inch to 0 undersize, amounting to 71.4 percent of the total sample, was fractionated into a series of screen sizes and float-and-sink products to get data for determining the washability characteristics of the coal. Before the screening and float-and-sink tests were made, however, machine cuttings, which are now gobbed underground, were added to the 2-inch to 0 sample. Enough of these cuttings were added so that the resulting mixture was considered representative of what the 2-inch to 0 run-of-mine coal would be if all machine cuttings, including the part now being gobbed, were brought to the tipple as a part of the run-of-mine coal.The mixture obtained referred to in this report as the run-of-mine or raw coal."

The Bureau of Mines used micro fracture density analysis of quartz grains in thin sections and diametric pulse velocity measurements along preblast and postblast cores to determine the nature and extent of rock damage produced by small (0.25-,0.50-,1.0-, and 2.0-kg) charges of high intensity explosive (C-4) in granite. Pulse velocities from the postblast cores were significantly lower than velocities from the preblast cores and, with the core logs, provided clear identification of the upper and sometimes the lower limits of most severe damage. These zones ranged from about 1.68 ft for the 0.25-kg blast to 4.16 ft for the 2.0-kg blast. Microfracture densities from postblast cores were significantly higher and more variable than densities measured from preblast cores. The microfracture density measurements showed that microscopic damage was present far past the zones of most severe damage as delineated by the pulse velocity logs and core logs. An exponential relation-ship was observed between the micro fracture density levels and the charge weight.

4.1 Introduction Using methods outlined in previous sections of this report, programs were written and/or obtained to: i) select best combinations of "a" and "k" for up to 8 different value parameters, ii) calculate available and unavailable ore tonnages and other statistics, and iii) produce contour maps of various parameter characteristics and available tonnages on a line printer. Interviews of 48 miners who escaped underground coal mine fires revealed that none of them had ever, before that incident, worn their self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) either in training or in a real emergency. Consequently, they were ill-prepared to use this emergency breathing apparatus. One persistent problem stemmed from the fact that miners had no notion of breathing resistance, nor of the fact that it would get more difficult to breathe the longer they wore their device. As a result, many of those who were interviewed had simply removed their mouthpieces and breathed ambient air. This is obviously behavior that should be trained out of the workforce. Unfortunately, because of high costs and difficult logistics, miner training is unlikely to ever include donning and wearing an apparatus on a regular basis. In order to give workers a better idea of what to expect from their devices, therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a tabletop (paper and pencil) simulation based upon actual predicaments evacuees had reported encountering. The simulation is designed to emphasize important points related to donning and wearing a self-contained self-rescuer in a mine fire escape, and, by doing so, to bring miners' expectations more in line with what their actual experiences would be. The simulation was field tested in six training classes at three different mining operations. In all, 99 individuals were involved in completing the exercise and rating its properties. In their ratings 88% of the respondents indicated they thought the scenario could definitely happen in real life, and over 80% agreed they had learned something new. From the field test data it was concluded that the simulation had authenticity and potential value as a teaching tool. The simulation was therefore used in a pre-test/post-test control group experiment to determine whether it led to improvements in miners' scores on a true-false test of their SCSR's functional capabilities and proper usage. Eighty-three miners were included in this part of the study. As expected, miners who had participated in the training exercise scored significantly higher on their post-test than miners who had not.

After thoroughly covering the health and safety training subjects required under Title 30, Part 48, of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), mine operators often find themselves with little or no time left in the class schedule for other important topics. This paper discusses a technique developed in partnership with RAG Twenty mile Coal Co., Oak Creek, CO, for incorporating employee participation at all levels in fire prevention and safe equipment operation training outside of traditional classrooms. The process involves development of training modules consisting of short, 5- to 7-minute videotapes coupled with toolbox talks that ground the content of the videos within the context of a miner’s workplace.

Techniques are being developed for measuring the mass concentration of respirable diesel exhaust particles found in underground coal mines. Studies have been conducted over the past five years to investigate size selective 18Dlpling techniques to measure the respirable mass concentrations of diesel exhaust and mine dust aerosol particles in underground coal mines. Results from these studies have been used to develop design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler.Three personal diesel exhaust aerosol samplers have subsequently been designed and evaluated in both laboratory and field settings. These samplers use size selective classifiers for the determination of respirable mass concentrations of mineral dust and diesel exhaust particles. Their designs are based on the premise that diesel exhaust particles are predominantly less than 0.8 µm while mineral dust is greater than 0.8 µm.One design, selected for field evaluation, consists of a 10 mm nylon respirable dust cyclone followed by a 0.8 µm cutpoint impactor and afterfilter. The cyclone removes the nonrespirable particles while the inertial impactor state, collects the mineral dust on an impaction plate and allows the diesel particles to penetrate to an afterfilter. The two sample fractions of the respirable particles ( <0.8 µ.m and >0.8 µm) are gravimetrically analyzed to determine the concentrations of the diesel and mineral dust portions in the respirable coal mine aerosol."
