Chemical thermodynamic properties for the ideal gas state from 0 to 1500 K are tabulated for all of the alkane hydrocarbons through C10. These properties are based on correlations of the extant data for the entropy, vapor heat capacity, and enthalpy of formation of individual alkanes and the equilibrium constants of alkane isomerization reactions.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the deployment, 5-month operation, and lessons gained from a continuous gas monitoring system using sampling-tube bundles at an underground mine fire in West Virginia. Research information gained indicates the utility of relating certain gas concentration ratios to events during fire development, mine reventilation, and mine recovery. In addition to monitoring the quality of remote fly ash seals, the system provided timely warning of dangerous gas concentrations which developed during surface and underground recovery activities. An evaluation of system components is supplemented by recommendations for improvements.

The objective of this investigation by the Bureau of Mines was to determine the response to sulfatization of diverse low-grade manganiferous materials in the iron formation of the Cuyuna district. In line with this objective a bench-scale sulfatizing procedure was developed that was less expensive and more rapid than pilot-plant methods. Samples from the central and south- western parts of the North range were tested. Results of evaluating a total of 46 pelletized samples, originating in areas with an estimated potential resource of 94 million long tons with a manganese content of 7 percent, indicates that approximately 87 percent of the manganese may be recovered as a synthetic manganese ore. This is equivalent to more than 12 million long tons of a metallurgical-grade ore, containing 46 percent manganese. It is anticipated that a premium product, containing over 50 percent manganese, may be obtained by sulfatizing procedures. Studies showing the effect of mixing hot exhaust gases with tie intake air of a four-stroke-cycle Diesel engine are described. The results indicate a marked increase in carbon monoxide in tip exhaust gases, a decrease in oxides of nitrogen, and no significant effect on aldehydes. The increase in carbon monoxide was greater at higher fuel-air ratios and was caused partly by the increase in fuel-air ratio end partly by the decrease in oxygen concentration resulting when exhaust has was added. The application of these results to the use of Diesel engines underground is considered.

This paper describing the mining practices at Mine No. 2 of the Marquette Range, Michigan is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various minim; districts of the United States. The publication, of this information should be of interest to the industry at large and the exchange of ideas thereby made possible should be of economic value to operators in all harts of the country. This report describes work done as part of a Bureau of Mines program to appraise the titanium-mineral resources of Idaho. The work included both field reconnaissance and a spot churn-drilling program. Much general information was available, as a result of earlier work done under the Western Radioactive Minerals Exploration Program conducted between 1950 and 1954 by the Bureau of Mines for the United States Atomic Energy Commission. This particular exploration provided data as to the quantity of ilmenite (TiFe03) and accessory black-sand mineral concentrates in a number of placer deposits; however, at that time no tests were made to ascertain if the ilmenite was of marketable grade. The spot churn drilling was begun in the Gold Fork area of Long Valley, Valley County, Idaho (fig. 1), in August 1956 and was completed during October of the same year. Eleven holes (designated as the GF series on fig. 2) 35 to 45 feet in depth, aggregating 425 feet, were completed during this period. Data from other exploration drilling in 1951 was used in this report. The 13 holes in the G series shown in figure 2 were drilled by the Bureau of Mines for the United States Atomic Energy Commission; the 7 holes of the DH series were drilled by the Bureau of Reclamation. The 20 holes, ranging from 16 to 140 feet in depth, totaled 1,625 feet. The combined number of all samples recovered was 422. Those taken in 1956 were composited for each drill hole and sent to the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Albany, Oreg., for analyses.

IN a Nation-wide appraisal of coking-coal reserves and of the feasibility of expanding them by upgrading marginal coals, it is natural that the Pittsburgh region of Pennsylvania should be considered first. Here, where the American iron and steel industry started, the Pittsburgh coal bed is of paramount importance. The use of coke in iron blast furnaces is said to have begun with the discovery that good blast-furnace fuel could readily be made by a simple method of coking Pittsburgh coal. To the present time, the prosperity of the steel industry has depended largely on utilization of this great coal reserve and the cheap transportation afforded by the Monongahela River system. OBJECT AND SCOPE OF INVESTIGATION The initial project in the study of upgrading marginal coking coals was laid out in this area, which contains large reserves of Pittsburgh coal contiguous to the Monongahela and its navigable tributaries. Much of the Pittsburgh coal remaining here is known to have a high sulfur content. The problem of reducing the sulfur to meet metallurgical requirements already has received much attention, and it is considered to be one of the most difficult technologic problems in the field of coal washing.

Of all the uses for dolomite that depend on its magnesia content, perhaps the most important is its use in basic refractories. The quantities of dolomite (including both that used as crude and that calcined before use) sold or used for refractory purposes by producers in the United States for 1920-41, inclusive, are shown in figure 1. As can be seen from the chart, the utilization of dolomite as a basic refractory is far from new; it was, in fact, the first basic refractory used extensively in open-hearth steel furnaces. After large deposits of magnesite were opened in Austria-Hungary, the use of dolomite in the open hearth declined somewhat, only to be actively revived during the World War of 1914 to 1918, when supplies from Austria were shut off. The use of dolomite as a refractory in the steel industry again declined slightly for a brief period after the Armistice, but subsequently its use has tended steadily to increase, latest statistics indicating that more dead-burned dolomite is used per ton of open-hearth steel now than during the World War of 1914 to 1918. Despite fluctuations in consumption, dolomite has continued to be by far the most widely used basic refractory material. The following table, showing the quantities of basic refractories consumed in the manufacture of steel, the principal outlet, indicates the relative importance of dolomite. The chief reason for the widespread use of dolomite as a basic refractory is its relatively low cost. Its abundance and the proximity of the deposits to the steel industry (see fig. 2) afford every incentive to enhance the desirable physical properties of dolomite refractories and to ameliorate certain of their less desirable characteristics. The present emergency, with its huge demands upon the steel industry, has lent further impetus to the work of improving dolomite refractories.

"In the fall of 1919, the U.S. Bureau of Mines began an inquiry as to the possibility of utilizing airplanes in conjunction with its rescue work, for quickly transporting engineers and oxygen rescue-apparatus to mine disasters.It was realised that this proposed use of airplanes has serious limitations, and if it were feasible, that the Bureau would have to rely on the cooperation of the established aviation fields of the U. S. Air Service for furnishing airplane service. Therefore Van. H. Manning, Director of the Bureau of Mines, under date of October 28, 1919, wrote the Director of Air Service outlining the rescue and first aid organization of the Bureau, the location of headquarters of district engineers, the distribution of safety cars and stations, and other essential details, and asking whether the Air Service could cooperate with the Bureau in the event of serious mine disasters. Major-General Charles T. Menoher, Director of Air Service, responded that the Air Service would be glad to cooperate insofar as possible, and designated those Air Service stations nearest the district engineers' headquarters, which might be best able to assist.The Bureau of Mines has ten mine rescue cars and eight mine safety stations distributed throughout the mining regions of the United States. The cars are each equipped with sets of oxygen mine-rescue breathing-apparatus and first-aid supplies. The car personnel consists of a mining engineer, surgeon, foreman, first-aid miner, clerk and cook. A foreman miner is in charge of each station and at five of the eight stations are mine safety trucks. The work of the cars and stations is two-fold; (1) Assisting in rescue and recovery work at mine disasters, and (2) training miners in mine rescue and first-aid methods, and in investigations looking to prevention of mine accidents. The country is divided into nine safety districts, with nine district engineers in charge."

"I. INTRODUCTIONA mechanism which is present in leukocytes and capable of releasing histamine from rabbit platelets was first described by Barbaro and Zvaitler in I966. A soluble mediator between rabbit leukocytes and platelets was also detected by Siraganian and Osier in 1971. This factor was isolated and characterized in 1971 by Benveniste et al. and named platelet activating factor i PAF). It was shown to be released from rabbit basophils through an antigen - IgE-dependent mechanism. The presence of PAF in human leukocytes' and its aggregation and releasing effects on human platelets were also demonstrated. Chemical analysis has shown that PAF is a glycerophospholipid with a choline polar head group. an ester-linked acyl chain at the second carbon and a nonester link at the first carbon.' The structure of the mediator was found to be 1-O-alky1-2-acetyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphoryl choline and it has been chemically synthesized.""' A variable portion exists in the alkyl group attached to the first carbon which can have a variety of molecular sizes such as C and C (where Cu is more abundant). Recent work by Pinckard et al."" has shown that there are at least five variations of the alkyl group.PAF has been shown to have a broad range of biological effects. Release of PAF from alveolar macrophages may be important in asthma, allergy, and shock states. In a rabbit model of antigen IgE anaphylaxsis. PAF can induce all of the effects of antigen challenge and. therefore is presumed to be a key mediator in production of anaphylaxsis. In addition to aggregating and degranulating platelets it is a potent chemoattractant."" and causes contraction of guinea pig ileum contraction of lung tissue and enhanced capillary permeability PAF has important effects in the kidney and is also known as the renal hypotensive factor proposed by Blank et al. who found the structure of PAF independently of Benveniste et al.' In producing these responses. PAF acts by a receptor-like mechanism. In platelets. PAF selectively desensitizes itself but not thrombin or collagen. In smooth muscle tissues a similar phenomenon occurs with anaphylatoxin or other stimuli.In vivo. PAF probably acts in concert with other agents in producing its various biological effects. It causes platelets to release histamine serotonin and RCS (rabbit-contractile substance formed from prostaglandins PPG2, PGH2 and TXA2) which contracts rabbit aorta. PAF can cause cells to release SRS-A and leukotriene B."

Diamond -drilling blast holes at Eastern Magnetite Mine C is proving economical in boundary shrinks , in removing pillars not readily accessible for percussion drilling , and in driving scraper drifts . The cost per foot drilled is greater than for percussion drilling , but savings in associated factors outweigh this handicap . The rocks drilled include trap rock and magnetite ore . The mining method is the panel , block- caving system utilizing scraper sublevel drifts instead of branch raises to convey the ore to the haulage level . Diamond -drilling blast holes was begun early in 1945. Three rigs equipped with noncoring bits are now in active operation two shifts per day . They are owned by the company , and the drill operators are paid by the day . In shrinkage stopes the drill is mounted on a horizontal bar set against opposite walls of the stope . Stoping holes are horizontal , which gives better results in blasting and requires fewer set ups . In scraper drifts the drill is mounted on a horizontal bar clamped to two columns about feet apart . Trim holes around the periphery of the drift and reliever holes are drilled 50 to 80 feet in length . A 10 - foot wedge cut drilled with a stoper is blasted in conjunction with a corresponding length of the trim holes to effect a 10 -foot advance of the full- sized drift . Recent drilling averages 97 feet per machine shift , excluding time utilized in setting up and moving the machine , hand mucking , and barring down . The feet drilled per bit at present is 417. These data represent the average for drilling in both rock (waste) and ore . Percussion drilling utilizes three types of wet drills . Detachable bits are standard . Gage changes for new bits is 1/8 inch and for reconditioned bits 1/16 inch . The life of a bit is five uses . Resharpening is on contract . A drill carriage is used in haulage headings .

In 1947, a Korfmann universal shearing machine was installed in a mine in the Southern field of the Pennsylvania anthracite region. The machine was obtained from Germany by the Bureau of Mines after the close of World War II as a part of a program of experimental work to increase the output and lower the cost of anthracite, which the Bureau of Mines initiated in 1944 when an agreement was made with an anthracite-producing company for use of one of the company's mines as a testing ground for certain mechanical equipment procured or developed by the Bureau. A major objective is to develop a mechanical mining method that will increase the rate of advance and reduce the coat of development of coal gangways in steeply pitching seams. In addition to the time to be saved in driving these openings by machine, it is felt that further economies will be affected by making it possible to concentrate producing sections into smaller compass and that savings will ensue in supervision, maintenance, and time required for mining a section. A higher percentage extraction also is an objective. Test work covered by this report was concentrated on the power characteristics, maneuverability, effectiveness, and general qualities of the Korfmann machine in cutting coal, the cutting tests representing the first use of a machine of this kind in steep-pitch mining in the United States.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Arkansas has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251 of which this is the tenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of which deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated. and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

An investigation of the production of iron in the blast furnace is obviously not an easy subject for research . Enough is known of the mechanical , thermal and chemical conditions existing inside the furnace to say certainly that they are complicated. Furnace operators have found that the process is sensitive to a number of known and to many unknown operating conditions . In order to form any conclusions of value , it seems necessary to collect a large amount of data taken with considerable care and accuracy. These facts make a blast furnace research difficult but not impossible . The most serious obstacle in attacking the problem comes from the fact that it is useless in the design and operation of the blast furnace to use the method of " trial and error , which has proved valuable in so many other industrial problems . The variables are so interrelated and are so dependent one on the other that the number of experimental combinations to be tried is enormous . There are certainly not less than twenty factors in furnace operation and design that are known to influence the results . This is apparent if it is remembered that a phrase like " size and shape of the furnace" includes height of the furnace , height , diameter and angle of the bosh , inwall batter , stockline diameter , and furnace volume ; and that a phrase like " chemical and physical properties of the fuels charged " includes size and shape of the lumps , density, porosity and strength of the coke , in addition to its chemical analysis . Let us suppose that we need choose for each of twenty factors one of two values , for example , suppose we must say only that the furnace shall be " tall " or " short , " that the bosh angle shall be " flat " OF "steep , that the ore shall be " coarse " or " fine , " or that the blast has to be "hot" or " cold , " the number of resulting combinations is more than one million . In putting twenty pennies on the table , either heads up or tails up, the number of permutations possible is the twentieth power of two , slightly more than one million. It is obvious , therefore , that some sort of mathematical relationship , a set of rules of thumb , laws , curves or the like , are needed . Whether the relationships , curves or formulas are derived from experiment , from theory, or from mere guess -work, makes no difference provided they agree with the known facts . If they do not agree with known facts , they are worthless no matter what their origin or how weighty the " authority" vouching for them. Few such relationships have appeared in blast- furnace literature , and it may be doubted whether such formulas can be discovered .

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008, "I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated" (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep an operation running. With examination, there are usually changes that can be made to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Modifications that result in surplus mine ventilation air could bring financial and environmental benefits. Some issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and nonmetal mines, to ventilate reserves that are deeper, hotter, and further away from fans and shafts, and to meet demands from increased production. This paper discusses successful methods to find additional usable air when there is no extra ventilation capacity. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal/ nonmetal operations but some may be applicable to coal as well.

Conservation in the utilization of any product is always subject to improvement if the composition and properties of the product are known. Petroleum is no exception, and knowledge of the characteristics of crude oils, even when given on the broad basis of routine type analyses has proved useful to chemists, engineers, and geologists in improving pro- duction and utilization of petroleum. For a quarter of a century the Bureau of Mines has sought to provide such information regarding crude oils and has analyzed many samples of petroleum by its standardized rou- tine method. Most of these analyses have been published, sometimes in special compilations, other times in connection with reports of research on petroleum. This report is a finding index for all analyses published up to January 1, 1948. The routine method used for all these analyses is basically the same as that described by Dean, et al.. Briefly, the procedure consists of testing by standard methods, small samples of a crude oil for gravity, sulfur, color, and viscosity, and of distilling a sample of the crude oil by a standardized procedure and determining certain properties in the sep- arated fractions and residuum. Careful records are made during the proce- dure, and the distillation data obtained are used to calculate the approx- imate amounts of products present in the sample such as percents of gas- oline, kerosine, gas oil, and lubricants. The data obtained are recorded on a standard analytical report form. An analysis of a sample of typical midcontinent crude oil is shown in table 1. Compilation of these analyses, sometimes in tabular form and usually for specific geographic areas, are published from time to time. Analyses are often shown in connection with other studies, such as engineering field reports. This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. .It presents analytical data for 4, 457 samples, representing the products of 92 companies. The samples were collected by companies during June, July, and August 1956, As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is on page 5.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute, and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. This paper is a continuation of a series made in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC), Inc. The first of this series of reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36, and succeeding reports described motor gasolines sold during the summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed
