In the course of another investigation4 during 1926 and 1927, samples of water collected from a few abandoned coal mines indicated that their drainage was usually lower in acidity than water from active mines in the same locality. In order to determine whether this condition might have a bearing on the advisability of sealing abandoned mines, a number of such mines were visited, samples of drainage were collected, and as much information as possible was obtained from officials of the mining companies and older residents of the district. The Colorado Minerals Co. calcite properties in Archuleta and Hinsdale Counties, Colo., (fig. 1) were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers in 1943. The demand for optical calcite during the war prompted the examinations and resulting development programs on the Meadows and Seavy ranch properties near Pagosa Springs, Archuleta County. Development was begun on the Meadows property in November 1943 and continued to the Seavy ranch property. The work consisted of stripping the overburden from the calcite areas and excavating pits and trenches with a bulldozer. The pits and trenches exposing the most promising calcite veins were then deepened by hand, and one shaft was sunk to a depth of 30 feet. A total of 36 trenches and 9 pits were excavated by bulldozer and. hand methods (figs. 2, 3, and 4). The calcite deposits occur as veins and irregular bodies filling fractures in the Mancos shale of Cretaceous age. The fractures persist for considerable distances along the strike, although the calcite filling may not be continuous for more than a few feet. The widths of individual veins range from a few inches to several feet. The calcite crystals uncovered at the surface and in pits, trenches, and shafts were found to be unsuitable for optical purposes because of fracturing and color in the crystals.

"Employee representation in the management of large mining enterprises was first introduced in organized form, by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. in 1915. Within the past few years a number of the larger mining enterprises have introduced similar systems and there is growing interest in the subject. This will be stimulated by the final report of the President's Second Industrial Conference, in which the following statement occurs:""The conference finds that joint organization of management and employees where undertaken with sincerity and good will has a record of success. The general principles governing such organizations are stated at length under the title 'Employee Representation. It is not a field for legislation, because the form which employee representation should take may vary in every plant. The conference, therefore, does not direct this recommendation to legislators but to managers and employees.""If the joint organization of management and employees in the plant or industry fails to reach a collective agreement, or if without such joint organization, disputes arise which are not settled by existing agencies, then the conference proposes a system of settlement close at hand and under Government encouragement, and a minimum of regulation. The entrance of the Government into these problems should be to stimulate further cooperation."""

Shuttle car trailing cable splices were tested for resistance to failure upon being subjected to repeated bending, abrasion, and tensile shocks using a new testing method that closely simulates shuttle car induced stress. The results show that under normal stresses, splices can be made to withstand the equivalent of three months of operational use. Restoring the tensile strength to the conductors is found to be as critical as restoring flexibility. Splices in which the conductors are of slightly unequal length did not present as serious a workmanship problem as previously thought since test results show that the conductors tend to equalize when longer cables, in contrast to short cables employed in previous testing methods, were used. Dynamic recordings of cable tensile stresses are presented for a shuttle car and the new simulated testing method. Two simple but effective methods for removing insulation using a knife and a pair of pliers are described. None of the designs tested for a sacrificial splice covering were satisfactory.

Tills U.S. Bureau of Mines report briefly evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of basic dust control techniques presently used by U.S. coal preparation and mineral processing plants. These include ventilation, baghouse-type collectors, wet scrubbers, electrostatic precipitators, source control, sprays, good housekeeping, and personal protection devices. Two specific problems in these types of operations are also considered: dust collector system duct clogging, and control room dust control. Information provided in this report results from dust control research projects conducted by the Bureau at various coal preparation and mineral processing plants over the past decade to reduce workers' dust exposure. These studies indicate that plant ventilation systems normally provide the most cost effective method for dust control. Baghouses and scrubbers were also effective in specific applications, and examples of each are given. In extreme dust conditions, personal protection devices, such as respirators or the dust helmet, can also be highly cost effective.

As part of a program designed to promote safety in industrial operations , the Bureau of Mines has been investigating the explosibility of numerous powdered products and dusts and studying means for the prevention of dust explosions . In a previous paper the results of a study of the inflammability and explosibility of metal powders were published . This report summarizes a similar study which has been made on various powders used in the plastics industry. The work was undertaken to provide information for a subcommittee of the Dust Explosion Hazards Committee of the National Fire Protection Association, which was charged with preparation of a code for the prevention of fires and dust explosions in plants producing or processing synthetic resins and molding compositions . The production of powders and generation of inflammable dusts are inherent in one or more steps of the manufacturing process of many resins and molding compositions, and control of the dust hazard is a major problem in the plastics industry . In the preparation of phenolic resin molding powders, for example , the solid synthetic resin is crushed and pulverized , and then blended with ground wood flour , cotton flock, or other fillers , as well as with coloring pigments . This raw mix is then passed through compounding mills , from which it emerges in the form of homogeneous sheeted stock, which is crushed , ground , and graded to form the molding powder . The number of major dust explosions in the plastics industry has been limited, but numerous small explosions have occurred, and in view of the ever -increasing volume of production the potential explosion hazard must be considered a very real one . Fortunately, this fact is realized by several manufacturers of plastic compounds , as well as by insurance companies , who are taking precautionary measures against possible accidents and during the past year or two have submitted numerous powder samples to the Bureau of Mines for explosibility tests .

THE BITUMINOUS coal and lignite industry increased substantially in 1962, compared with the 1961 figures. The major items of production, consumption, exports, and productivity increased. However, certain key items declined. The steady upward trend in mechanization failed to materialize for the third year; the percentage of total tonnage mechanically loaded remained the same as in the 2 previous years; and the tonnage mechanically cleaned was smaller than in the previous year. The percentage of total production mined by stripping and by augers increased slightly. Most significant was the continued decline in average value and employment. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1962-422 million tons-was 5 percent greater than the 403 million tons produced in 1961. Production was greater in 1962, owing largely to expanded consumption by the electric utilities and to more exports.

"INTRODUCTION The float-and-sink test 5/6/ is generally the first test used in determining the washing characteristics of coal. The simplest form of the test is that of using one solution of such specific gravity that the test sample is separated into ""float"" and ""sink"" fractions. In practice, however, a series of solutions is used, and the sample is separated into a number of fractions of a definite specific-gravity range. Analyses of a series of fractions of this type are often referred to as the ""specific-gravity analysis,"" and are of great value in the selection, construction, and operation of commercial washing equipment.The test is rather simple to use, provided a number of conditions are recognized and as many as possible held constant, such as:1. In laboratory testing, two types of solution are available -Aqueous solutions of calcium and zinc chlorides.Mixtures of organic liquids such as carbon tetrachloride, benzene, gasoline, bromoform, etc.2. Absorption of the solution by the coal,3. Solvent action of the solution toward the coal.4. Constancy of specific gravity during the test is affected by temperature changes, dilution, and evaporation.5. Personal technique of the test, such as the time the coal is in the liquid, rate of adding the sample to the liquid, stirring, time of draining, etc.6. Moisture content of the coal as tested."

This Bureau of Mines report presents results from experimental studies on wood fires in a laboratory-scale tunnel network. Experimental measurements include ignition delay time, flame spread rate, ventilation air and gas flow rates, wood temperature, gas temperature, pressure and composition, thermal flux, and smoke particulates. These measurements form a data base for fire-scaling studies and provide information on various fire processes, such as flow interaction between ventilation air and fire, fire throttling and reverse flow, and duct fire energetics. Results show how hazards of duct fires relate to the development of (1) asphyxiating and toxic fumes, (2) explosive gas mixtures, (3) throttling of ventilation air, and (4) high-temperature combustion products. Such fire hazards should be carefully considered when testing flammabilities of materials used in a confined underground mine environment.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a portable, inexpensive teleoperation system for mobile hard-rock mining equipment. The system was tested on a compact loader-trammer in a simulated stope. The teleoperation system includes radio remote control and computer-assisted navigation. A recent enhancement includes video cameras mounted on the machine to provide visual information to the operator. This system allows the operator to remain in a safe location while operating the machine from a distance, thus increasing both operator safety and mining productivity.

"Summary: In this report the differential regulation of NF-KB and nitric oxide (NO) was investigated in the mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 following exposure to a mineral dust (silica) and /or an endotoxin (Lipopolysaccharide, LPS). The results indicated that silica and LPS can significantly induce the activation of NF-KB as well as elicit enhanced production of NO in RAW 264.7 cells as part of an early inflammatory response mechanism. A 24-hour time-course study showed that NO release from these cells continued to increase following the initial stimulus by LPS or silica. In contrast, activation of NF-KB was maximal at 6 hours and then showed a steady decline to 24 hours. The production of NO was suppressed by protease inhibitor and antioxidant, both of which block the activation of NF-KB. Surprisingly, the use of an NO synthase inhibitor resulted in an enhancement of NF-JCB activation. These findings suggest that NO produced in macrophage cells in response to an inflammatory stimulus like silica or LPS my be linked to a negative feedback role on the activation of NF-KB. It is now accepted that nitric oxide (NO) plays a pivotal role in the inflammation response process when macrophage cells are activated by a pro-inflammatory stimulus (l). Production of NO is dependent on the activity of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Up until now, at least three distinct genes have been described which encode different isoforms of NOS. NOS has been cloned from a variety of different mammalian cells, including constitutive neuron NOS, constitutive endothelium NOS and inducible NOS (2). Macrophages appear to be the principal cellular source for the inducible form of NOS (iNOS) activated in response to an inflammatory producing event. The mechanisms subserving the regulation of the iNOS gene and NO production have been under intense investigation in recent years (3-5). Several binding sites for transcriptional factors have been identified in the promoter region of iNOS gene, including NF-lCB, AP-1, NF-IL6, Oct-I to cite a few (5). NF-KB appears to play a"

Experimental data were obtained from two medium-duty diesel engines derated to qualify for use in underground mines. Gaseous and particulate emissions from these engines were measured and results provide information on the effect of exhaust treatment devices on the emissions. The devices in the study were a catalyst, a particulate trap, and an exhaust gas cooler of the water scrubber type. Emission levels of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons were observed to be very low in comparison with emission levels of comparable engines in full-rated operation. Oxides of nitrogen and benzo(a)pyrene content of the exhaust also were found to be somewhat low in comparison with previous findings. For particulate reduction, the combination of a particulate trap and a scrubber was observed to be the most effective combination tried; in some cases, over 60 pct particulate reduction was effected by the trap-scrubber combination.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and continuous pilot plant flotation tests to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica from an Alabama graphitic-mica schist. Preconcentration of the ground ore on a Humphrey's spiral was employed to reject the heavy minerals and part of the quartz in a product virtually free of mica. The acid-cationic mica flotation process recovered over 89 percent of the mica in a product containing 98.7 percent mica. Grinding of the mica concentrate in a fluid energy mill produced a product with a bulk density of 12 lb per cubic foot.

"SUMMARY This mine, which was discovered in 1846, was active in the 1850's, in the 1870's, and again in 1883. Since this last date, it has been idle. Two parallel bed-veins in lower Silurian limestone, about 50 feet apart, strike N. 70° E. and dip 70° NW. The north vein had an average width of 12 feet to a depth of 50 feet, where it was barren. The south vein had an average width of 16 feet to a depth of 75 feet; on the 110-foot level, although well-defined it carried little or no values. The zinc content of the ore was as high as 12 percent, and some lead and silver were associated with it. A reduction plant for production of spelter and zinc oxide was constructed at the mine. The only available record of production is for 1873 to 1876, inclusive, when 357 tons of smelter was shipped. The mine is caved and inaccessible, and nothing now remains of the treatment plant.Four holes totaling 1,046 feet wore diamond-drilled to probe for extensions of the ore in depth. Core recovery was about 85 percent. No samples were taken for analysis.INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "INTRODUCTION The work of using a system of air locks in unsealing a mine in Ohio following a fire probably was one of the outstanding jobs of its kind in a medium-thick coal bed.The fire in this mine, thought to have been of electrical origin, was discovered at about 1:30 a.m. on December 11, 1941. Forty-four men were working in the affected section at the time; 5 escaped unassisted, and 37, who had barricaded themselves, were rescued. The bodies of two men, who had succumbed after breathing fumes given off by the fire, were brought part way out of the mine before it became necessary to seal the mine.Direct attempts to extinguish the fire with water were abandoned when hazardous amounts of 'carbon monoxide, methane, and other inflammable gases were detected in return air passing through the main haulageway and escape-way of the mine.The mine was completely sealed on the surface at about 8 p.m. on December 12, 1941, with the two bodies remaining in the mine. Sixteen days after the mine had been sealed, the two bodies were recovered. This was accomplished by air-locking through a partitioned-off stairs compartment of a ventilation shaft. This work was done under adverse barometric and atmospheric conditions.A method for collecting representative air samples from the immediate fire area was used successfully by utilizing a vacuum pump on about 10,000 feet of existing water line that had been broken near the fire area.The immediate fire region was sealed, and confined to a relatively small area; the remainder of the mine was recovered, and operations were resumed February 9, 1942, or 59, days from the time of sealing the mine on the surface. This recovery was made by air-locking the main entries inby from the shaft and No. 2 right-face entries.The distance between air locks averaged about 500 feet, and as each new set of seal stoppings and air locks was completed, the old or outby seals were taken out and the area between was ventilated. In ventilating this area, it was often necessary to use line curtains to direct the air into dead-end places."

"INTRODUCTION During recent years, roof bolting has become widely accepted as a systematic method of supporting both coal- and metal-mine roofs. Today, over 2 million roof bolts are installed monthly. Most of the information on bolt installation procedure reported to date (1,2,3,4,5,6) 3/ has been obtained by trial and error by individual groups or operators. To insure good roof control, experience and field tests have indicated that roof bolts should be installed immediately after the exposure of new roof, and they should be preloaded enough to minimize sag of the roof over the opening. The question of the proper initial preload for roof bolts is under study, although it is a general practice to impose an initial load on a bolt of approximately 10,000 pounds. This created a problem of measuring bolt loads at installations in underground mines, which was partly solved by using a commercial-type torque wrench; a device that permits a direct reading of the torque applied to the nut on a roof-bolt assembly from which the corresponding load can be determined by referring to specifications furnished by the manufacturers. However, considerable apprehension was expressed regarding the accuracy of this measuring procedure because of variations in the manufacture of roof-bolting materials and the degree of care exercised in making bolt installations. In the process of loading a bolt, only a small part of the effort is expended in producing strain in the bolt - the larger part of the effort is used in overcoming frictional effects in the nut-bolt-washer assembly. These frictional effects are subject to many factors, such as condition of threads, type of lubrication, if any, the finish on the nut and bearing plate, and the alinement of the bearing plate on the bolt. The object of this investigation was to determine the accuracy with which the load developed in a slotted-type roof bolt installed in a conventional manner in shale or sandstone roof rock can be determined from the torque applied to the nut.This report is the first of a series relating to basic research in roof bolting in underground mines. A future report will cover results obtained using expansion-type bolts under similar conditions. Other reports will consider the efficiency of bolt anchorages, the long period stability of bolts, and the design of safe and efficient roof-bolting systems."

This report presents results of recent Bureau of Mines research to establish the probability of spark ignition as a function of current (or voltage, for capacitor circuits) for resistive, inductive, and ca-pacitive circuits in 8.3% methane-air atmospheres. The data presented quantify the explosion hazard created when low-power electronic devices catastrophically fail in an explosive mine atmosphere. Previous litera-ture dealt with levels of probability between 10-3 and 10-4. This re-port extends the probability data to levels as low as 10-7. This study has verified that when the probability of ignition, PI, is plotted on a log-log coordinate system versus the current (or voltage), a continuous, straight-line relationship is formed. An interesting result that can be statistically hypothesized is that at some low level of igniting current the ignition process ceases altogether.

ATHOUGH scattered signs of increased activity in the mining industry accompanied an incipient improvement in the overall economic situation during the latter months of 1963, production levels for the year as a whole responded to the general 1962-63 business recession with a 4.2 percent decline. The petroleum industry, active since 1907, did not become a dynamic force in the economy until exploration and drilling contracts were concluded with private companies in 1958 and 1959; on November 15, 1963, having virtually achieved self-sufficiency in petroleum in the preceding year, those contracts were unilaterally annulled. In the field of metallics, the only approach to internal sufficiency-aside from the iron and steel industry that has depended heavily on the importing of basic raw materials-has been in mining, smelting, and refining lead and zinc although iron ore, silver, beryllium, tantalite, and tungsten have been mine production items of economic significance. Reserves of lead, zinc, silver, bismuth, vanadium, and low-grade and metallurgically difficult iron ore-as well as those of beryllium, tantalite, and tungsten which are produced primarily for export-appear to be fairly abundant. The exploration of deposits of copper, cobalt, tin, lithium, gold, manganese and uranium has been undertaken on a relatively small scale, and little precise information is available on the extent of reserves. Argentina is dependent on foreign sources for part of its required iron and steel and, except for lead and zinc, most of its nonferrous metals. Nonmetallies and solid fuels present an exceptionally varied array of production items among which cement had the second largest 1963 output in South America. Borates, bentonite, common clay, diatomite, fluorite, granite, lime, limestone, obsidian, onyx, rhodochrosite, salt, and spodumene ordinarily are produced for export either exclusively or in excess of domestic consumption requirements. Barite, cement, chalk, gypsum, marble, and mica are both exported and imported. Argentina depends entirely or partly on imports for coal and coke, certain special types of clay, mineral abrasives, graphite, magnesite, mineral fertilizers, sulfur, talc, and minerals for construction, the last group being chiefly attributable to convenience of river transport from Uruguay.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated, on a laboratory scale, a technique for recovery of silver from pregnant solutions generated in the hydro-metallurgical treatment of complex base-metal sulfide concentrates with oxidizing chloride media. This technique provides a means for recovery and simplified reduction of accessory silver to metal from chloride solutions. The method consists of adding NaI or KI to the solution to precipitate AgI, which is then contacted with Na2S to produce Ag2S and to regenerate the iodide salt solution. Silver recoveries range from 99 pct with 20 pct excess iodide precipitant, to 92 pct when the theoretical stoichiometric amount of precipitant is employed. The Ag2S product can be reduced to silver metal by contact with aluminum chips in NaOH solution followed by purification with conventional fire refining techniques.
