Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are emerging as viable replacements for incandescent-based cap lamps used in mining. The photometric and energy characteristics of these light sources differ in important ways. The present paper describes the performance of LED and incandescent sources in cap lamps in terms of correlated color temperature, color rendering, light output, electric power, ambient temperature and airflow, and light source aging. Importantly, these characteristics can influence a miner?s ability to spot mining hazards thus impacting safety. Secondly, some of these characteristics interact with the operating life of the cap lamp?s battery power, such that differences between LED and incandescent sources can be magnified toward the end of a 10­hour battery discharge cycle. Empirically, we have determined that after 8 hours at an ambient temperature of 25 °C, the average light output of an incandescent cap lamp can decrease to about 69% of its initial value when powered by a lead-acid battery and it can decrease to about 65% of its initial value when powered by a nickel-hydride battery. An LED-based cap lamp using a constant current drive circuit can maintain about 96% of its initial value when powered by a nickel-hydride battery. Real-world tests addressing the effects of ambient temperature and airflow on the light output of an LED and incandescent cap lamp were conducted in the NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM). The LED cap lamp yielded a vertical average illuminance improvement of approximately 9.5% and the INC cap lamp yielded a vertical average illuminance degradation o f approximately 4%. The differences between LED and incandescent cap lamps were further quantified by the calculation of ?mesopic luminance? data that indicated for the same photopic luminance (i.e., as measured using a conventional light meter) the LED cap lamp could be up to 38 % more efficient than the incandescent cap lamp with a lead-acid battery at the end of the 10-hour driving cycle. Lastly, accelerated life tests were used to empirically determine light output depreciation as the incandescent light source age approached its useful life. There was about a 35% decrease in light output. This is quite considerable, especially given that the light output will decrease an additional 30% to 45% over the period of a 10-hour shift. The implications of the differences between LED and incandescent sources are discussed. This information is crucial in determining how visual performance could be affected for real-world conditions where batteries discharge during the work shift and as the light source ages. To date, only idealized conditions have been used for LED and incandescent cap lamp visual performance research.

Chlorates and perchlorates, when mixed with certain reducing materials, may give a detonating explosive of considerable power. Concerning explosive chlorate mixtures, Guttman3/ states that they "have at all times fascinated inventors on account of the large amount of oxygen stored up in potassium chlorate, which can be given off so readily. When Lavoiser and Berthollet tried to make a chlorate powder in a stamp mill in 1788, they made a great show of it, and even two ladies were present. Unfortunately, after a certain amount of pounding the powder exploded and killed an official and the daughter of the Government commissary, who assisted at the experiments.***. It is interesting to observe how the same old mixtures are proposed over and over again with slight alterations only, in order to qualify for a patent. Potassium chlorate with some carbonaceous matter like charcoal, sugar, starch, glycerin, flour, or sometimes a vegetable or mineral oil and the like occurs again and again." A large number of organizations interested in the search for mineral deposits have adopted the magnetic method of geophysical prospecting, as it has proved to be the most simple, convenient, and rapid, and at the same time the least expensive in comparison with other methods. According to the last statistical data, about two millions square kilo¬ meters were explored in the United States by different geophysical methods. Ninety-six per cent of this area was prospected for oil and 4 per cent for minerals. Detailed exploration by means of the magnetometer has been carried out over about 85 per cent of this surface. The great advantages offered by this method resulted in the fact that the magnetometer was tried out in most places in which geophysical methods were applied. The main purpose of such e:rploration is to obtain the maximum knowledge valuable to the geologist; therefore good geological interpretation of the results of measurements is important. The possibility of drawing practical conclusions from a map representing the results of the study of the terrane depends greatly on the accuracy with which the measurements are made. The purpose of this article is to show the different sources of error by which the work of an operator may be affected and to discuss the means by which the carrying out of a magnetic survey may be improved.

This Bureau of Mines report presents results from experimental studies on wood fires in a laboratory-scale tunnel network. Experimental measurements include ignition delay time, flame spread rate, ventilation air and gas flow rates, wood temperature, gas temperature, pressure and composition, thermal flux, and smoke particulates. These measurements form a data base for fire-scaling studies and provide information on various fire processes, such as flow interaction between ventilation air and fire, fire throttling and reverse flow, and duct fire energetics. Results show how hazards of duct fires relate to the development of (1) asphyxiating and toxic fumes, (2) explosive gas mixtures, (3) throttling of ventilation air, and (4) high-temperature combustion products. Such fire hazards should be carefully considered when testing flammabilities of materials used in a confined underground mine environment.

This report describes a laboratory investigation of the effectiveness of low-pressure steam and a steam-water spray sequence for the collection of airborne respirable (<10 µm) coal dust. Comparison of present results to previous results obtained with water spray alone indicates that the use of steam in a steam-spray sequence increases the collection efficiency by about 14 percent over that obtained by water spray alone. However, the use of steam to collect airborne dust requires cooling the steam-dust mixture in order to achieve condensation of the steam, and steam does not appear to be an attractive approach for collecting airborne dust in underground coal mining operations.

Experimental data were obtained from two medium-duty diesel engines derated to qualify for use in underground mines. Gaseous and particulate emissions from these engines were measured and results provide information on the effect of exhaust treatment devices on the emissions. The devices in the study were a catalyst, a particulate trap, and an exhaust gas cooler of the water scrubber type. Emission levels of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons were observed to be very low in comparison with emission levels of comparable engines in full-rated operation. Oxides of nitrogen and benzo(a)pyrene content of the exhaust also were found to be somewhat low in comparison with previous findings. For particulate reduction, the combination of a particulate trap and a scrubber was observed to be the most effective combination tried; in some cases, over 60 pct particulate reduction was effected by the trap-scrubber combination.

"Summary: In this report the differential regulation of NF-KB and nitric oxide (NO) was investigated in the mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 following exposure to a mineral dust (silica) and /or an endotoxin (Lipopolysaccharide, LPS). The results indicated that silica and LPS can significantly induce the activation of NF-KB as well as elicit enhanced production of NO in RAW 264.7 cells as part of an early inflammatory response mechanism. A 24-hour time-course study showed that NO release from these cells continued to increase following the initial stimulus by LPS or silica. In contrast, activation of NF-KB was maximal at 6 hours and then showed a steady decline to 24 hours. The production of NO was suppressed by protease inhibitor and antioxidant, both of which block the activation of NF-KB. Surprisingly, the use of an NO synthase inhibitor resulted in an enhancement of NF-JCB activation. These findings suggest that NO produced in macrophage cells in response to an inflammatory stimulus like silica or LPS my be linked to a negative feedback role on the activation of NF-KB. It is now accepted that nitric oxide (NO) plays a pivotal role in the inflammation response process when macrophage cells are activated by a pro-inflammatory stimulus (l). Production of NO is dependent on the activity of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Up until now, at least three distinct genes have been described which encode different isoforms of NOS. NOS has been cloned from a variety of different mammalian cells, including constitutive neuron NOS, constitutive endothelium NOS and inducible NOS (2). Macrophages appear to be the principal cellular source for the inducible form of NOS (iNOS) activated in response to an inflammatory producing event. The mechanisms subserving the regulation of the iNOS gene and NO production have been under intense investigation in recent years (3-5). Several binding sites for transcriptional factors have been identified in the promoter region of iNOS gene, including NF-lCB, AP-1, NF-IL6, Oct-I to cite a few (5). NF-KB appears to play a"

The Bureau of Mines has carried out investigations on a method for producing zirconyl sulfate solution from zircon sand, comprising (1) reacting zircon sand with molten NaOH, (2) leaching the resultant fusion frit with water to remove sodium silicate and to convert sodium zircon-ate to hydrous zirconium oxide, and (3) leaching the hydrous zirconium oxide from unreacted sand with hot, dilute H2S04 to produce crude zirconyl sulfate solution. The following conditions were found to be suitable: reacting 0.6 kg of NaOH per kilogram of zircon sand for 10 min at 600° C; leaching the frit with 3 to 4 liters of water per kilogram of solids; leaching the residue with 5.1 liters of water and 1.25 liters of 98-pct H2S04 per kilogram of original solids for 10 min at 90° C; and filtering or decanting to recover unreacted zircon sand. A preliminary cost estimate is included.

"SUMMARY This mine, which was discovered in 1846, was active in the 1850's, in the 1870's, and again in 1883. Since this last date, it has been idle. Two parallel bed-veins in lower Silurian limestone, about 50 feet apart, strike N. 70° E. and dip 70° NW. The north vein had an average width of 12 feet to a depth of 50 feet, where it was barren. The south vein had an average width of 16 feet to a depth of 75 feet; on the 110-foot level, although well-defined it carried little or no values. The zinc content of the ore was as high as 12 percent, and some lead and silver were associated with it. A reduction plant for production of spelter and zinc oxide was constructed at the mine. The only available record of production is for 1873 to 1876, inclusive, when 357 tons of smelter was shipped. The mine is caved and inaccessible, and nothing now remains of the treatment plant.Four holes totaling 1,046 feet wore diamond-drilled to probe for extensions of the ore in depth. Core recovery was about 85 percent. No samples were taken for analysis.INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. A stirred reactor (SR) combustion system has been developed to gather information on the mechanisms of ignition and flame propagation of coal dust under conditions similar to those found in coal dust explosion flames. The prime scaling variable considered in this study is that of rapid particle heating (between 105 and 106°K/sec) which is accomplished by means of turbulent mixing during combustion. The SR combustors tested in this study have consisted basically of spheres hollowed in the centers of refractory housings. Coal and air mixtures have been injected into the spherical combustion chambers through a single jet, two opposed jets or four opposed jets. The diameters of the jets have ranged from 0.63 to 0.22 cm. The volumes of the combustion chambers have ranged from 1.0 to 0.2 liters. The reactors have been equipped with thermocouples embedded in the combustion chamber wall as well as a thermocouple located in the exhaust gas stream. In the latter versions of the SR, provisions were made for both solid sampling and gas sampling of the reactant stream exiting from the combustion chamber. Experiments have been carried out using pulverized bituminous coal. The coal has been reacted in an SR in mixtures of air and air/nitrogen. These experiments have provided information on the mode of ignition of the coal as well as yielding information on the kinetics of coal pyrolysis through the use of SR theory. Ash tests performed on the reacted samples collected from the SR indicated that the majority of the values of weight loss percentage were between 60 and 70 percent. The percentages of weight loss were relatively unaffected by changes in temperature which varied between 1100 and 1700°K and by changes in residence time which varied between 10 and 20 millisec. Volatile matter tests performed on the samples indicated that the volatile matter left in the char ranged from 3 to 20 percent of the original content. By assuming that all the mass loss was due solely to pyrolysis with no combustion occurring at the particle surface, Q-factors for each test have been calculated. The results of these calculations indicate an average value of Q equal to 1.88. This finding shows that the majority of mass loss can be attributed to pyrolysis. The fact that the extent of reaction varies only slightly over the range of test conditions has been examined in the context of the two component hypothesis of coal constitution. This approach leads to the conclusion that the reaction of the "easily evolved" component VMI is extremely rapid and that the majority of it is removed from the coal in times less than the residence time in the system. This means that the volatile residue remaining in the char can be considered to consist of component II, VMII. If the mass fraction of VMI = 0, then an activation energy of 18.0 kcal is obtained for the pyrolysis reaction. If the mass fraction is assumed to be 0.75, the activation energy increases to 31.2 kcal.

Tills U.S. Bureau of Mines report briefly evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of basic dust control techniques presently used by U.S. coal preparation and mineral processing plants. These include ventilation, baghouse-type collectors, wet scrubbers, electrostatic precipitators, source control, sprays, good housekeeping, and personal protection devices. Two specific problems in these types of operations are also considered: dust collector system duct clogging, and control room dust control. Information provided in this report results from dust control research projects conducted by the Bureau at various coal preparation and mineral processing plants over the past decade to reduce workers&apos; dust exposure. These studies indicate that plant ventilation systems normally provide the most cost effective method for dust control. Baghouses and scrubbers were also effective in specific applications, and examples of each are given. In extreme dust conditions, personal protection devices, such as respirators or the dust helmet, can also be highly cost effective.

"INTRODUCTION The work of using a system of air locks in unsealing a mine in Ohio following a fire probably was one of the outstanding jobs of its kind in a medium-thick coal bed.The fire in this mine, thought to have been of electrical origin, was discovered at about 1:30 a.m. on December 11, 1941. Forty-four men were working in the affected section at the time; 5 escaped unassisted, and 37, who had barricaded themselves, were rescued. The bodies of two men, who had succumbed after breathing fumes given off by the fire, were brought part way out of the mine before it became necessary to seal the mine.Direct attempts to extinguish the fire with water were abandoned when hazardous amounts of 'carbon monoxide, methane, and other inflammable gases were detected in return air passing through the main haulageway and escape-way of the mine.The mine was completely sealed on the surface at about 8 p.m. on December 12, 1941, with the two bodies remaining in the mine. Sixteen days after the mine had been sealed, the two bodies were recovered. This was accomplished by air-locking through a partitioned-off stairs compartment of a ventilation shaft. This work was done under adverse barometric and atmospheric conditions.A method for collecting representative air samples from the immediate fire area was used successfully by utilizing a vacuum pump on about 10,000 feet of existing water line that had been broken near the fire area.The immediate fire region was sealed, and confined to a relatively small area; the remainder of the mine was recovered, and operations were resumed February 9, 1942, or 59, days from the time of sealing the mine on the surface. This recovery was made by air-locking the main entries inby from the shaft and No. 2 right-face entries.The distance between air locks averaged about 500 feet, and as each new set of seal stoppings and air locks was completed, the old or outby seals were taken out and the area between was ventilated. In ventilating this area, it was often necessary to use line curtains to direct the air into dead-end places."

The Colorado Minerals Co. calcite properties in Archuleta and Hinsdale Counties, Colo., (fig. 1) were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers in 1943. The demand for optical calcite during the war prompted the examinations and resulting development programs on the Meadows and Seavy ranch properties near Pagosa Springs, Archuleta County. Development was begun on the Meadows property in November 1943 and continued to the Seavy ranch property. The work consisted of stripping the overburden from the calcite areas and excavating pits and trenches with a bulldozer. The pits and trenches exposing the most promising calcite veins were then deepened by hand, and one shaft was sunk to a depth of 30 feet. A total of 36 trenches and 9 pits were excavated by bulldozer and. hand methods (figs. 2, 3, and 4). The calcite deposits occur as veins and irregular bodies filling fractures in the Mancos shale of Cretaceous age. The fractures persist for considerable distances along the strike, although the calcite filling may not be continuous for more than a few feet. The widths of individual veins range from a few inches to several feet. The calcite crystals uncovered at the surface and in pits, trenches, and shafts were found to be unsuitable for optical purposes because of fracturing and color in the crystals.

Shuttle car trailing cable splices were tested for resistance to failure upon being subjected to repeated bending, abrasion, and tensile shocks using a new testing method that closely simulates shuttle car induced stress. The results show that under normal stresses, splices can be made to withstand the equivalent of three months of operational use. Restoring the tensile strength to the conductors is found to be as critical as restoring flexibility. Splices in which the conductors are of slightly unequal length did not present as serious a workmanship problem as previously thought since test results show that the conductors tend to equalize when longer cables, in contrast to short cables employed in previous testing methods, were used. Dynamic recordings of cable tensile stresses are presented for a shuttle car and the new simulated testing method. Two simple but effective methods for removing insulation using a knife and a pair of pliers are described. None of the designs tested for a sacrificial splice covering were satisfactory.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a portable, inexpensive teleoperation system for mobile hard-rock mining equipment. The system was tested on a compact loader-trammer in a simulated stope. The teleoperation system includes radio remote control and computer-assisted navigation. A recent enhancement includes video cameras mounted on the machine to provide visual information to the operator. This system allows the operator to remain in a safe location while operating the machine from a distance, thus increasing both operator safety and mining productivity.

This Bureau of Mines report and its companion report (Information Circular 9073) have been prepared as a complete reference on underground coal mine lighting. This report discusses system design criteria and procedures, data and specifications to aid in selection of suitable mine lighting hardware, and guidelines for system installation and maintenance. Topics include light measuring techniques and instruments, illumination regulations for underground coal mine environments and equipment, lamps and ballasts, available mine lighting hardware, design and evaluation of coal mine illumination systems, and installation and maintenance of a mine lighting system.

ESTABLISHMENT of an effective inspection system has been held essen¬tial to any international agreement that may be designed primarily to curb the testing of nuclear weapons. A number of reports and papers already have described basic inspection concepts and appraised various pro¬cedures, techniques, and methods as to their probable effectiveness in detecting and identifying violations under such agreement. This report results from a study of only one part of the contemplated inspection system, specifically the final phases embracing onsite investigations and mine examination techniques. The results and reports of earlier work were reviewed in detail, and subjects that were found to have been exhaus¬tively evaluated are recognized by reference and not redescribed here. In other instances, previously described techniques, methods, and clues were revaluated to define more clearly their practical value to the final objective of an onsite inspection. Previous documentation does not refer to a number of subjects, techniques, tools, clues, and methods considered by the study; this report treats these in detail, even though when applied singly or collectively their practical value may be questionable.
