"This study reports a new property of the important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes, glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin- NADP oxidoreductase, that can catalyze a one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V). During the enzymatic reduction process, molecular oxygen is reduced to H2O 2 , which reacts with the reduced metal complexes to generate hydroxyl radicals. Since the hydroxyl radicals have been suggested to play an important role in Cr(VI) toxicity, this study provides a basis for a recent observation that Cr(VI) mutagenesis is strongly oxygen dependent. These results also point to an enzymatic pathway for the metabolism of some metal ions and concomitant generation of hydroxyl radicals. l. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this communication is to report that some important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) can catalyze one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V) and simultaneously reduce molecular oxygen to generate Hi02 and, eventually, the ""OH radical. This finding is significant because (i) the known substrates for the flavoenzymes are organic species and not metal ions, and (ii) the report on the enzymatic formation of the ""OH radical provides a new pathway for understanding the mechanism of genotoxicity of some non-ferrous metal ions. For example, it has been suggested that OH radical is likely to be the major species responsible for Cr(VI) genotoxicity [1-5). The 'OH radical is generated through the reaction of Cr(V) complexes with cellular Hi02 [4,5]. Cr(V) itself is known to be generated from Cr(VI) in various biological systems, in particular, microsomes [ 6), mitochondria [7] and mitochondrial electron transfer chain complexes [8]. However, no specific enzyme responsible for the Cr(V) generation has been identified except possibly glutathione reductase [4]. In this study we have used ESR and spin trapping techniques to show that the flavoenzymes can generate Cr(V) and provide a catalytic redox cycle for 'OH formation in such reactions. A system capable of monitoring a mine electrical power system to detect incipient electrical component failure could significantly improve power system safety and availability. The U.S. Bureau of Mines funded a contract with The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) to establish the theoretical and technical framework for such a system. This report briefly outlines the contract, reviewing related Bureau and Penn State work prior to its award, and describes support work carried out by the Bureau. The main focus of the report is on research efforts by Penn State and subsequent results. An existing algorithm for incipient-failure detection and classification was studied, and recommendations are made to improve its performance. In addition, mathematical models of cable-connected motor systems and deteriorating motors were developed and implemented on computers. These models and laboratory tests were used to study and document relationships between component deterioration and electrical terminal effects. The project was supported by the U.S. Navy and the nature of its interest in the application of failure prediction techniques is also included.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coal beds in Allegheny County, Pa. It is one of a series planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. More than 7 million tons of coal was produced in Allegheny County in 1957. Of this, more than 5 million tons was cleaned mechanically in nine cleaning plants. The Bureau of Mines estimated that, as of January 1, 1953, more than 384 million tons of recoverable coal remained in the county in beds 28 inches or thicker.

"Gallic acid is a sensitive, stable, colorimetric reagent for the determination of tantalum in the range of 2 to 40 µ g.Ta/ml. The method consists of the fusion of tantalum oxide with potassium pyrosulfate and solution of the cooled melt in saturated ammonium oxalate, followed by development of a yellow complex with an ethanolic solution of gallic acid. The tantalum-gallic acid complex absorbs over a broad region in the blue and near ultraviolet. Adverse effects due to interfering ions and solution conditions, such as oxalate concentration and pH, can be minimized by a suitable choice of wave length.by a suitable choice of wave length.A new and sensitive colorimetric method is provided that has been used successfully at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory of the Federal Bureau of Mines for determining minor amounts of tantalum.INTRODUCTIONThe development of corrosion-resistant alloys at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory prompted a review of the analytical chemistry of columbium (niobium) and tantahnn. Not only are these elements difficult to determine in small amounts, but tantalum especially lacks both sensitive and characteristic color reactions. Various phenolic compounds have been suggested as colorimetric reagents for tantalum, Quentin and Wagner (10, p. 24B) 1/ recommend the use of tannin. The use of pyrogallol was suggested originally by Krivoshlykov (6, pp. 59-60), whose method recently has been subject to a number of modifications (3, pp. 249-254; 5, pp. 1340-1344; 1, pp. 1803-18oi; 4, pp. 345-350). The yellow coloration produced by pyrocatechol in an oxalate solution containing tantalum may also be used to estimate tantalum ( 11, pp, ll-1-4-148) . The use of hydrogen peroxide has been recommended also (7, pp. 164-165; 9, pp. 926-931).Aside from a lack of specificity and sensitivity, the major failing of phenolic reagents is their susceptibility to air oxidation. The oxidation products are highly colored and absorb in the same spectral region as the tantalum complex. Holding reductants are not completely satisfactory in minimizing this effect. Increasing the acidity, while retarding the oxidation, has an adverse effect on the tantalum sensitivity."

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report identifies the types of serious accidents that occur most frequently at small underground coal mines and describes the strategies that could help prevent these accidents. A wide variety of methods for improving safety are suggested, including improvements in the design of equipment, work procedures, work schedules, safety programs, and emergency response plans, as well as techniques for diagnosing the potential hazards associated with new technologies and work procedures. Some of the papers in this volume focus on preventing specific types of mining accidents--ones associated with materials handling (primarily back injuries), equipment maintenance, improper machine guarding, and ground failure during retreat mining. Although the recommendations in this volume are heavily influenced by research performed at underground coal mines in the Appalachian coalfields, most of the papers contain advice that is equally pertinent to almost any type of mine.

Gold was recovered from scrap electronic 60-40 (tin-lead) solders by drossing with aluminum or zinc at elevated temperatures. The gold, together with other metallic impurities, collected in the dross phase which could then be separated from the molten solder by skimming or filtering. Drossing upgraded the gold concentration by a factor of 10. Further upgrading was achieved by a combination of steps including an oxidation roast and either a combined cyanidation-amalgamation treatment or an aqua regia leach. The gold was then recovered in highly concentrated form from the aqua regia or cyanide solutions by cementation and from the amalgam by volatilization or dissolution of the mercury. The solder was purified by reaction with NaOH to remove dissolved aluminum or with SnCl2 to remove dissolved zinc.

During 1983, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of 19,700 acres that included the Fish Creek Mountains WSA (Wilderness Study Area), 15 miles southwest of the Salton Sea. Two United States Gypsum Co. claim groups in the WSA have more than .20 million tons of inferred gypsum reserves. These high-grade, surface and near-surface gypsum deposits are an extension of a gypsum bed that has been mined continuously since 1922. The Waters prospect in the central part of the WSA has large quantities of limestone suitable for many commercial uses. Sand and gravel is plentiful in the WSA in alluvial fan and ancient shore-line deposits. Limestone and alluvial deposits are not economic because similar material is closer to potential markets. No evidence of energy minerals or geothermal resources was identified in the WSA. A portion of the eastern Fish Creek Mountains WSA is leased for oil and gas exploration. United States Gypsum Co. holds eighteen unpatented placer claims in the northwestern part of the WSA. No other mining claims or mineral leases were identified in the study area. No mineral production is known from within the WSA.

The selective recovery of nickel and zinc from a waste phosphate solution by solvent extraction was investigated by the Bureau of Mines as part of a broad program to recover valuable metals and compounds from industrial wastes, and to reduce the associated land and water pollution caused by dumping these wastes. The waste, which resulted from the phosphation of automboile bodies, yielded 99 percent of both the nickel and the zinc by extraction with dinonyl naphthalene sulfonic acid (DNSA) and di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (EHPA), respectively. Dilute sulfuric acid was used to recover the metals and regenerate the solvents.

The objective of this Bureau of Mines study was a laboratory-scale evaluation of the sodium sulfate refining process for removing copper from molten ferrous scrap. Maximum copper removal is achieved in carbon-saturated melts at 1,300° C. Low carbon concentrations and higher temperatures result in a less efficient copper removal and an increased sulfur concentration in the iron. Sodium sulfate refining significantly lowers the concentration of aluminum, manganese, and silicon; however, the copper removal efficiency is adversely affected by the presence of manganese and silicon. Compared with other reagents tested, sodium sulfide-forming slags were found to be the most suitable for both copper removal and sulfur control. The sulfur content of the refined iron was higher in tests conducted in acid-type refractory crucibles. Earlier studies showed that tin, a significant metallurgical impurity, is not removed by the sulfate process. During the present investigation, results showed that chlorination, using organic solid sources of chlorine, reduced the tin concentration to acceptable levels in molten iron.

Coal mines that undergo self-heatings, and specifically mines that sustain both floor heave and self-heatings, would benefit from the use of sealants to minimize air ingress to susceptible areas. The U.S. Bureau of Mines(USBM) evaluated three sealant systems for this purpose, bentonite-water mixtures, silicate gel, and guar gum gel. The guar gum-based gel was the only sealant that possessed the desired properties of elasticity, ease of preparation, adaptability to the mine, and a long life. In addition, since the gel consists mostly of water, it could quench or cool nearby heatings. Optimal formulations were determined in laboratory tests, and then tested in the USBM Safety Research Coal Mine. Two formulations resulted in stable gels that lasted for at least 12 months in the mine. Semi continuous preparation of gel using an eductor was evaluated and appears feasible. Although guar gum gel is expensive, selective use to prevent heatings in specific areas would be cost-effective, both interms of productivity and enhanced mine safety.

An experimental iron blast furnace of 3-foot-diameter hearth, producing about 12 tons of metal per day, was operated for 2 weeks with various proportions of anthracite replacing a corresponding amount of coke. The furnace operated well with anthracite in amounts up to 40 percent of the total fuel and produced metal of uniformly low sulfur and normal silicon contents. An increase to 50 percent anthracite during two attempts resulted in poor operation and the charge hung in the s haft of the furnace. INTRODUCTION Anthracite production in Pennsylvania decreased from 84,400,000 net tons in 1926 to 40,600,000 net tons in 1952, and there was a further decline in 1953 to 30,900,000 net tons. Employment in the anthracite industry dropped from 165,000 men working an average of 244 days per year in 1926 to 57,900 working an average of 163 days per year in 1953,3/ which has naturally resulted in considerable unemployment in the region. The industry is actively engaged in promoting new uses for anthracite to increase the demand and thus improve economic conditions in the region. One possibility is the use of anthracite to replace part of the coke for smelting iron ore in blast furnaces. The tests in this report were made to determine whether this use of anthracite would be feasible.

Retreat pillar mining concentrates stresses on workings directly outby gob areas, which can result in coal mine bumps. The development of bump-control design criteria by the U.S. Bureau of Mines was furthered by data from a novel bump control mining method at the Olga Mine, McDowell County, WY. The pillar splitting, retreat mining system induced large pillar pressure increases and roof-to-floor con-vergence. Roof-to-floor convergence monitoring proved to be a valuable tool in evaluating the pillar splitting mining method and localized destressing techniques. Maximum strain energy storage in chain pillars appears to have occurred just prior to the first of four split cuts. At that point a 15-ft-wide, highly fractured perimeter confined the core of the 55-by 70-ft pillars, permitting the pillar core to support tremendous pressures. Splitting the chain pillars into two 17.5-by 70-ft wings removed the confinement load, resulting in pillar yield. Thus, the pillar splitting mining method successfully redistributed the weight of the roof away from the pillar line. Shot fire and auger drilling destressing techniques aug-mented the pillar splitting mining method by redistributing the weight of the roof.

"INTRODUCTION The ti taniferous-iron deposits in the Iron Mountain area of the Laramie Range, and particularly the Shanton deposit, were examined by several engineers. 3/ of the Bureau of Mines during 1942, 1943, and 1944. A dip-needle survey also was made early in 1945. 4/ Interest in this property has increased as a result of the exploratory work completed by the Bureau in 1944 on the Iron Mountain deposit, 6 miles northeast of the Shanton property.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

Comprehensive geophysical measurements were made in the Tertiary Channel gravel deposits of Badger Hill, Calif., with the refraction seismograph, gravimeter, and well logging equipment, to develop a three-dimensional physical model of the gold-bearing gravels. Tests were also made of the applicability of magnetometer and electrical resistivity techniques. Results of 14 seismic profiles revealed four distinct layers with velocities of 1,600 ft/sec for loose gravel, 5,900 ft/sec for compact gravel, 8,600 ft/sec for cemented, blue gravel, and 15,500 ft/sec for bedrock. The depth to bedrock along the middle of the channel varied from a minimum of 100 feet in the hydraulically mined pit area to a maximum of about 300 feet in the upper bench area immediately south of the pit. These geophysical methods revealed that 40 percent of the drill holes necessary to delineate the deposit could be eliminated, at a cost saving of at least 30 percent.

A multistage probability model for assessing the reliability of mineral samples following any number of stages of sample reduction is presented. Sample reduction is the process of alternately crushing or grinding and sampling mineral particles prior to assaying. The final multistage model developed accurately describes the ideal sample reduction practice. This model is based on previously developed and experimentally tested models for a single stage of sampling. The problem is approached through the probability distributions for the various stages of sampling. The probability distribution, moments, and moment relationships for a single stage of sampling are first reviewed, and the useful concept of unit moments is defined. In presenting the models for two stages of sampling, emphasis is placed on the physical description of the sample reduction process which leads quite naturally to its mathematical representation. In this representation, crushing or particle-size reduction between the stages of sampling is viewed as a random process with respect to the number and proportion of particles of the various kinds produced. The physical and mathematical description is extended to more than two stages of sample reduction, and the first three moments for any number of stages are developed. In common sample reduction practice the effects of a finite population (finite amount of material) at each stage of sampling appear to be important in describing the variance contribution of each stage. This is also true for the third moment about the mean. An example is cited in which the skewness increases by more than an order of magnitude when several stages of sampling are considered. This is largely due to the dependence of the multistage third moment about the mean on the variance. In general the model and results should be useful in helping to understand, control, and reduce the random errors that arise in the sample reduction process.

The mining law of Chosen, which was made effective April 1, 1916, was promulgated as ordinance 8, December 24, 1915, in accordance with the provisions of articles 1 and 2 of law No. 30 of 1911. The new le repealed the mining law, Fo. 3 of 1906, and the placer mining law, No. of 1906, and in effect annulled all prior mining legislation. An amendment to the mining law of 1916 (by virtue of law No. 30 of 1911) vas. passed December 16, 1918, as ordinence o. 17. The detailed regulations, which were to supplement the law proper, and rich in all probability follow closely the regulations in force in the Empire, were not available. Unless otherwise indicated, references in this paper are to the mining law of 1916.

Legislation and Government Programs.-The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) held public hearings in early 1975 on proposed standards for exposure to inorganic arsenic. The findings obtained at the hearings will be considered to promulgate emission standards. Domestic Production.-Arsenic trioxide (As203) was produced domestically only at the Tacoma, Wash. copper smelter of ASARCO Incorporated. Production data cannot be published. Output rose 9% over that of 1974, shipments were less than half those of 1974, and stocks rose 31 %. Production of arsenic metal, begun by ASARCO in August 1974, continued in 1975.

The chemical and thermal criteria used for predicting the spontaneous combustion hazard are briefly reviewed and data are presented to characterize the gas desorptions and self-heating tendencies of 29 U.S. coals. Closed vessel desorption experiments showed that CO, CO2, and CH4 are the main gases evolved and that the CO, CO/?O2 index, and 02 absorption rate increase with decreasing rank and increasing oxygen content of the coal. In this Bureau of Mines report, the effects of temperature, moisture, and other variables are discussed together with the application of the data to the complex conditions encountered in a mining environment. An important finding is that the presence of CO alone in a mine is not necessarily an indication of a self-heating reaction of the coal. Based upon experiments conducted in an adiabatic-type calorimeter, the self-heating temperatures of lignite and subbituminous coals can be as low as 30° C, whereas the bituminous coals require a temperature of about 60° C or more. The self-heating hazard is greatest when the coals are dried and exposed to a high humidity condition, apparently as a result of the "heat-of-wetting." Generally, the hazard is greatest with the western coals of the United States.

Increasing use of Birmingham and other roof trusses prompted a Bureau of Mines study of support forces produced on a mine roof by these members. Equations, obtained from laboratory and field tests, are given for calculating the contact forces between the roof strata and a typical truss. Actual contact forces for a specific truss are difficult to estimate because of variable friction loss at the contact points. A finite-element analysis, using typical contact forces, indicated that trusses have a negligible effect on the stress field in massive, competent roof strata. The effectiveness of trusses in supporting broken rock strata was not analyzed. However, experience has shown that trusses are effective in supporting incompetent roof.
