As part of its program to help decrease the dependency of the United States on foreign imports of nonfuel minerals and to devise technology for the efficient and economic use of domestic resources, the Bureau of Mines smelted and sulfation-leached an ilmenite from northern Minnesota. The objective was to assess the feasibility of preparing chlorination-grade titanium feedstock. The concentrate was smelted with woodchips, coke, and soda ash in 91-kg-and 1-metric ton (mt)-capacity electric arc furnaces to form Ti-rich slag and commercial-grade pig iron. The slag contained from 67 to 77 wt pct titanium oxides and from 1.8 to 7.2 wt pct iron. Sulfation occurred in a 4.5-kg/h moving-bed reactor using S02-air mixtures at temperatures of 8000 to 8500 C to form soluble salts of the Ca, Mg, Mn,and Na impurities, which cause plugging of fluidized-bed chlorinators. Subsequently, the sulfated slag was leached in acid to remove the soluble sulfates. The final product from small-scale testing contained up to 95.5 wt pct Ti02, a minimum of 0.6 wt pct Fe, and a minimum total of 0.3 wt pct of the four impurities of interest. The final product meets charge specifications for chlorination. However, more large-scale testing is necessary.

Climatic conditions are compared with roof fall occurrence from April 1, 1972, to December 31, 1975, by the Bureau of Mines. These comparisons indicate that humidity has a strong influence on roof fall occurrence rates. Cubic regression techniques are used to develop best fit curves. Statistical analysis of these curves indicate that both are sinusoidal and exhibit positive correlation with each other. The sine waves have a period of 1 year with maximum and minimum inflection points in August and February.

Any communication system requires at least three elements in order to function: a transmitting device, a receiving device, and a transmission line or propagation medium. Even the device children use, tin cans connected with string, consists or these three elements. One speaks into one can (transmitter), which vibrates at the same frequencies as the voice. The string (transmission path) picks up the vibrations of the can and carries them along its entire length. The other can (receiver) detects the vibration and reproduces the original sounds to a lesser extent depending on distance, tightness of string, type of string, etc. All communication systems depend on these three elements: transmitter, transmission path, and receiver. Communication systems can be divided into three fundamental categories: wired phone systems, radio systems, and carrier current systems. Sections 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4, respectively, describe these systems and explain the basic principles of how each works. Hybrid systems are those systems that use various combinations of the three basic communication methods. Hybrid systems are described in section 2.5. There are some other methods of signaling (stench warning, bell signaling, etc.) that can be used in underground mines to transmit or convey information. These systems, although they cannot be considered true communication systems since they do not provide voice or even two-way communication, are briefly described in section 2.6. 2.2 Wired Phone Systems Wired phone systems are all those that depend on a wire connection between phones with the wire carrying the voice signals. Figure 2-1 is a diagram of two typical wired phone systems.The top panel shows a simple single pair party line system. In this system each phone is connected to a common pair of wires, and a person speaking into one phone will be heard at all the other phones on the line. The bottom panel shows a multipair private line phone system. In this type of system, each phone is connected by its own individual pair of wires to a central switch or telephone exchange. To establish a call between two phones in this system, the lines between the two phones must be connected (switched together) within the telephone exchange. In early exchanges, the connections were made manually by an operator. These exchanges are called Private Branch Exchanges (PBX's). Today, equipment within the exchange can automatically connect each phone to any other phone in the system. These exchanges are called Private Automatic Branch Exchanges (PABX's). There are many different types of automatic exchanges. Some utilize switches to physically make each connection according to the number dialed. Other, more advanced exchanges are completely solid state and may even be computer controlled. [ ]

"This study reports a new property of the important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes, glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin- NADP oxidoreductase, that can catalyze a one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V). During the enzymatic reduction process, molecular oxygen is reduced to H2O 2 , which reacts with the reduced metal complexes to generate hydroxyl radicals. Since the hydroxyl radicals have been suggested to play an important role in Cr(VI) toxicity, this study provides a basis for a recent observation that Cr(VI) mutagenesis is strongly oxygen dependent. These results also point to an enzymatic pathway for the metabolism of some metal ions and concomitant generation of hydroxyl radicals. l. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this communication is to report that some important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) can catalyze one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V) and simultaneously reduce molecular oxygen to generate Hi02 and, eventually, the ""OH radical. This finding is significant because (i) the known substrates for the flavoenzymes are organic species and not metal ions, and (ii) the report on the enzymatic formation of the ""OH radical provides a new pathway for understanding the mechanism of genotoxicity of some non-ferrous metal ions. For example, it has been suggested that OH radical is likely to be the major species responsible for Cr(VI) genotoxicity [1-5). The 'OH radical is generated through the reaction of Cr(V) complexes with cellular Hi02 [4,5]. Cr(V) itself is known to be generated from Cr(VI) in various biological systems, in particular, microsomes [ 6), mitochondria [7] and mitochondrial electron transfer chain complexes [8]. However, no specific enzyme responsible for the Cr(V) generation has been identified except possibly glutathione reductase [4]. In this study we have used ESR and spin trapping techniques to show that the flavoenzymes can generate Cr(V) and provide a catalytic redox cycle for 'OH formation in such reactions. The Bureau of Mines is investigating a method to recover Ni, Cu, and Co from low-grade domestic laterites through reduction roasting, leaching, sol-vent extraction, and electrowinning unit operations. The objective of this research is to develop processing technology that can convert low-grade domestic deposits containing critical metals into national reserves. As a part of this research, a solvent extraction system was investigated for the extraction of nickel and copper, followed by the separation and production of suitable electrolytes. Nickel and copper were coextracted from ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach liquors (pH~9.5) with LIX 64N extractant in a laboratory-size mixer-settler continuous circuit. Three extraction stages resulted in >99-pct extraction of nickel, substantial copper extraction, and essentially no cobalt extraction from leach liquors. A crowd stage reduced the ammonia loading on the solvent by maximizing nickel loading. Residual ammonia was removed from the loaded solvent with a pH-controlled scrub. Nickel and copper loaded on the solvent were separated by selective stripping. Typical nickel strip circuit operation using electrolyte containing 90 grams per liter (g/l) Ni and 11.9 g/l H2S04 yielded >99.9 pct Ni stripped from the solvent in five stages. The copper loading on the recycled solvent was controlled in a copper strip stage using electrolyte containing 25 g/l Cu and 160 g/l H2S04,

"Gallic acid is a sensitive, stable, colorimetric reagent for the determination of tantalum in the range of 2 to 40 µ g.Ta/ml. The method consists of the fusion of tantalum oxide with potassium pyrosulfate and solution of the cooled melt in saturated ammonium oxalate, followed by development of a yellow complex with an ethanolic solution of gallic acid. The tantalum-gallic acid complex absorbs over a broad region in the blue and near ultraviolet. Adverse effects due to interfering ions and solution conditions, such as oxalate concentration and pH, can be minimized by a suitable choice of wave length.by a suitable choice of wave length.A new and sensitive colorimetric method is provided that has been used successfully at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory of the Federal Bureau of Mines for determining minor amounts of tantalum.INTRODUCTIONThe development of corrosion-resistant alloys at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory prompted a review of the analytical chemistry of columbium (niobium) and tantahnn. Not only are these elements difficult to determine in small amounts, but tantalum especially lacks both sensitive and characteristic color reactions. Various phenolic compounds have been suggested as colorimetric reagents for tantalum, Quentin and Wagner (10, p. 24B) 1/ recommend the use of tannin. The use of pyrogallol was suggested originally by Krivoshlykov (6, pp. 59-60), whose method recently has been subject to a number of modifications (3, pp. 249-254; 5, pp. 1340-1344; 1, pp. 1803-18oi; 4, pp. 345-350). The yellow coloration produced by pyrocatechol in an oxalate solution containing tantalum may also be used to estimate tantalum ( 11, pp, ll-1-4-148) . The use of hydrogen peroxide has been recommended also (7, pp. 164-165; 9, pp. 926-931).Aside from a lack of specificity and sensitivity, the major failing of phenolic reagents is their susceptibility to air oxidation. The oxidation products are highly colored and absorb in the same spectral region as the tantalum complex. Holding reductants are not completely satisfactory in minimizing this effect. Increasing the acidity, while retarding the oxidation, has an adverse effect on the tantalum sensitivity."

The purpose of this paper is to indicate some of the benefits that have been derived in the Zeigler No. 3 mine by using roof bolts under extremely adverse roof conditions J with the thought that much better results could be obtained in other mines with more normal roof conditions by applying some of the practices that were developed in this mine. Some of the benefits that have been obtained in this mine, which will be shown in this paper, are: 1. Increased tonnage per man-shift at the face when roof bolts are used, as compared to the tonnage under similar conditions when conventional timbering methods were used. 2. Increased efficiency of roof bolting by giving the foremen a definite plan to follow. 3. Reduction in delays caused by failures of the trailing cables of loading, mining, and drilling machines. 4. Reduction in the number of accidents after roof bolting was adopted. Inasmuch as the success that followed roof bolting in this mine was obtained under one of the most treacherous roofs in the Middle West, it is reasonable to suppose that correspondingly better results could be obtained under more favorable roof conditions by using the same procedure.

A process is being developed by the Bureau of Mines to selectively recover nickel and cobalt from low-grade domestic laterites. In laboratory evaluation of the process, the oxides in the laterite were selectively reduced with carbon monoxide at temperatures from 350° to 600° C. For material containing more than about 5 percent magnesia, pyrite additions or post-reduction heat treatments were necessary to achieve satisfactory nickel and cobalt extraction for this range of reduction temperatures. Multistage leaching of the reduced material at ambient temperature and pressure in the presence of oxygen, ammonium sulfate, and ammonium hydroxide extracted up to about 90 and 85 percent of the contained nickel and cobalt, respectively. The nickel was selectively recovered from the leach solution by solvent extraction and was then stripped from the loaded organic with dilute sulfuric acid to provide a nickel-rich electrolyte. Treatment of the raffinate with hydrogen sulfide resulted in the recovery of cobalt as a sulfide. The only contaminant in solution was magnesium which was removed by ion exchange or precipitation. In this process the energy requirements are relatively low and except for minor operation losses, only coke and oxygen are consumed.

"Early in 1947 the Bureau of Mines became interested in adapting suspension roof support to coal mining 5/ as a possible means of reducing the high rate of accidents from falls of roof. For a time the program made little progress be¬cause of the shortage of steel products after the end of World War II, but during the past 8 months this restriction has eased, and as of May 1, 1949, 114 mines had either started experimental work or had ordered materials and equip¬ment in anticipation of trial installations. It is estimated that 30 linear miles of roof in underground passageways have been secured by this method in recent months, and no lost-time roof-fall accident has been reported in these areas up to that date.Many coal-mining companies in widely separated localities have cooperated in making experimental installations. In very few instances are these companies entirely satisfied that they have arrived at the best solution in determining the most efficient adaptation to suit their particular conditions. Moreover, new ideas and modifications of the basic principle are constantly being brought to light and are being tested. Available test data is far from complete, and it is conceivable that some new idea will be developed to alter the present concept of proper technique; therefore, this progress report does not attempt to answer all questions that might arise in connection with this method of roof support; it simply recounts the experience acquired to date. Consequently, few references to costs are made. Such roof supports have been used in mines for many years in widely separated localities. The St. Joseph Lead Co., operating in southeastern Missouri, apparently was the first large mining company to prove the practicability of the principle by applying it in a systematic manner for securing roof for more than 20 years (fig. 1)."

This report summarizes the work performed by the Bureau of Mines on the development of analytical procedures for determining metallic and interstitial impurities in high-purity tungsten. Fourteen published methods and seven unpublished methods are briefly described. Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, in microgram to higher quantity levels, can be determined by several methods. Trace levels of 29 metallic impurity elements can be determined by optical spectrography, X-ray spectrography, and other instrumental methods.

A pure scandium solution was concentrated from 10-4 mole per liter to 0.5 mole per liter by continuous foam fractionation in a spaced, packed column. Recovery in the foam was 77 percent using a spaced, packed draining column with sodium n-methyl-n-"coconut oil acid" taurate as the surfactant. The technique was first studied batchwise in a small unpacked column to determine the more important variables. Optimum surfactant concentration was found to depend on scandium concentration. Extraction and, in general, enrichment ratios were highest in the 2.5 to 3.5 pH range at temperatures ranging from 50° to 70° C. An airflow rate of 136 ml./min. was satisfactory in the equipment used.

This report is concerned with the conditions affecting the methods and costs of mining phosphate rock in that part of the western phosphate field that is in Bear Lake and Caribou Counties in southeastern Idaho ( see fig . 1) . The area was selected because it contains most of the known phosphate reserve and because its geology has been studied more extensively than that of other sections . Deposits of phosphate rock on public land may be leased from the Government under the terms of the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 , subject to the regulations of the Bureau of Land Management . Public interest in phosphate production is growing , as shown by an increasing number of applications for leases . Two mines are being operated steadily for the production of phosphate rock by companies that have also the necessary processing plants for the manufacture of fertilizer . Total western phosphate - rock production in 1947 is reported by the Economics Statistics and Division of the Federal Bureau of Mines to have been 1,193,000 long tons , mined in Idaho , Montana , and Wyoming . The average grade was 30.7 percent of contained phosphorus pentoxide (P205 ) ; the average value at the mines was $5.67 per long ton . Idaho contributed 905,000 tons , or somewhat more than 75 percent of western production . Western fertilizer plants took 23 percent of total production; 76 percent was exported . Strip mining accounted for 75 percent of the Idaho tonnage; the remainder was stoped from underground workings . Rock must contain a minimum of 30 percent P205 to be commercially useful for the production of superphosphate fertilizer by current acid treatment methods . Research by corporations and Government agencies has been directed toward the use of lower - grade ore . So far , only by smelting can rock containing as little as 25 percent P205 be used economically . Any development of processing or use pattern that would render the mining of , say , 20 percent rock profitable would have important effects in reducing the unit cost of mining . In the search for metallurgical improvements , consideration should be given to the saving of valuable components of the rock, such as vanadium and fluorine , both of which are present in the beds .

A system capable of monitoring a mine electrical power system to detect incipient electrical component failure could significantly improve power system safety and availability. The U.S. Bureau of Mines funded a contract with The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) to establish the theoretical and technical framework for such a system. This report briefly outlines the contract, reviewing related Bureau and Penn State work prior to its award, and describes support work carried out by the Bureau. The main focus of the report is on research efforts by Penn State and subsequent results. An existing algorithm for incipient-failure detection and classification was studied, and recommendations are made to improve its performance. In addition, mathematical models of cable-connected motor systems and deteriorating motors were developed and implemented on computers. These models and laboratory tests were used to study and document relationships between component deterioration and electrical terminal effects. The project was supported by the U.S. Navy and the nature of its interest in the application of failure prediction techniques is also included.

The oft-repeated expression that the taproot of safety lies in the attitude of the management toward accident-prevention work is indisputable and has become almost an axiom. Trite and somewhat timeworn though the statement may be, it is nevertheless true that the supervisory force must earnestly support a policy of safety and maintain at all times a con¬ siderate regard for the welfare of the employee if that high degree of cooperation of the employee, so vital to the successful prosecution of any safety program, is to be expected. The responsibility for preventing accidents rests upon the management, and in the case of the Spring Canyon Coal Co. such responsibility is recognized and accepted with little or no reservation. This company, aside from the humanitarian aspects involved, believes that safety is good business and not a matter to be treated passively or in a perfunctory manner. The problems with respect to safety that have been met and wholly or partly solved can best be appreciated when some of the natural conditions, adverse and otherwise, existing at this operation are taken into consideration. Mine 1 is about 1 mile north of the town of Spring Canyon, Carbon County, Utah, and is served by both the Denver & Rio Grande Western and Utah Coal Route railways. During the year 1931 the mine produced 312,397 tons, approximately 10 per cent being derived from pillar workings. The normal daily output during the summer months is about 2,000 tons, and during the peak of production in the winter season the daily production varies from 2,500 to 3,000 tons. The number of miners varies from 87 in summer to 220 in winter, and the day men vary in number from 66 in the winter to 45 in the summer; 12 company men are employed the year around. The officers of the company are J. B. Smith, president, San Francisco, California; T. R. Stockett, general manager, Salt Lake City; and G. A. Murphy, superintendent, David Brown, assistant superintendent, and John Sullivan, mine foreman, all of Spring Canyon, Utah.

The first one was an overview and problem definition briefing given to the seismic consultants on September 7, 1972. The second was a formal oral presentation of study results to technical staff members of the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center on November 21, 1972.

Objective To identify techniques to reduce the probability of gob gas explosions. Background In the last 6 years, seven explosions of methane and/or coal dust occurred within worked-out, sealed areas (gobs) of underground U.S. coal mines. These explosions, believed to have been started by lightning, destroyed many mine seals and caused much damage external to the sealed area. Three of these gob gas explosions occurred in one mine in Alabama over a 3-year period. Fortunately, the explosion forces and the toxic gases that vented from the sealed gob area did not cause fatalities or injuries, but they destroyed several large seals. If miners had been inspecting or working near these areas, the potential for serious injury and/or death would have been high. The United Mine Workers of America and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requested that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) help identify the mechanisms for lightning penetration into the gob and recommend ways to reduce the probability of occurrence of future explosions from such lightning penetrations into sealed areas of underground coal mines. Because three of the explosions occurred in a single mine, special attention was focused on these particular explosions. The first occurred in April 1994 in a sealed area, which enclosed about 1.35square miles of abandoned workings (gob). This explosion destroyed 3 of the 38 seals that surrounded the gob. These seals were less than 2,000 ft away from three 4.5-in-diam steel-cased test wells that extended from the surface into the mine entry. At the time of the explosion, the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN)verified 12 lightning strikes within 10 miles of the mine, including several above the gob. After the 1994 explosion, the damaged seals were rebuilt using an acceptable seal design capable of with standing a 20-psi explosion, as required by 30 CFR 75.335. On January 26,1996, a second gob explosion destroyed five more cementitious pumpable seals less than 2,000 ft away from those destroyed in 1994and even closer to the steel-cased wells. The NLDN verified72 lightning strikes in the area of this second gob explosion. Compressive strength analyses of fragments from the destroyed seals showed that strengths ranged from 11 to 138 psi, with an average of83 psi. This is over 100 psi below the minimum 200-psi compressive strength requirement for cementitious pumpable seals. These seals were again replaced. On July 9, 1997, the third and most violent explosion occurred in the same vicinity of the last two explosions. Three more cementitious pumpable seals were destroyed, including one newer seal that exceeded the minimum 200-psi compressive strength requirement. Electrooxidation techniques were investigated on a bench scale by the Bureau of Mines to determine the applicability of the process for extracting molybdenum and rhenium from low-grade molybdenite concentrates. Parameters affecting the extraction, such as pulp density, power consumption, reagent requirements for pH control, and electrolytic cell configuration, were studied. Molybdenum and rhenium extractions of 98 to 99 percent were achieved from several concentrates containing 4.76 to 28.6 percent molybdenum and 180 ppm to 1,000 ppm rhenium. Optimum results were obtained by maintaining pH values between 5.5 and 7.0 during electrolysis and allowing the final pH to rise to about 8.2. Reagent consumption was 4 to 6 pounds of sodium carbonate per pound of molybdenum extracted. The power consumption declined from a range of 12 to 25 kilowatt hours per pound of molybdenum extracted with immersion electrodes to 9.7 kilowatt hours with a bipolar flow-through cell; however, molybdenum extraction was independent of cell configuration.

"INTRODUCTION The ti taniferous-iron deposits in the Iron Mountain area of the Laramie Range, and particularly the Shanton deposit, were examined by several engineers. 3/ of the Bureau of Mines during 1942, 1943, and 1944. A dip-needle survey also was made early in 1945. 4/ Interest in this property has increased as a result of the exploratory work completed by the Bureau in 1944 on the Iron Mountain deposit, 6 miles northeast of the Shanton property.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The mining law of Chosen, which was made effective April 1, 1916, was promulgated as ordinance 8, December 24, 1915, in accordance with the provisions of articles 1 and 2 of law No. 30 of 1911. The new le repealed the mining law, Fo. 3 of 1906, and the placer mining law, No. of 1906, and in effect annulled all prior mining legislation. An amendment to the mining law of 1916 (by virtue of law No. 30 of 1911) vas. passed December 16, 1918, as ordinence o. 17. The detailed regulations, which were to supplement the law proper, and rich in all probability follow closely the regulations in force in the Empire, were not available. Unless otherwise indicated, references in this paper are to the mining law of 1916.

Increasing use of Birmingham and other roof trusses prompted a Bureau of Mines study of support forces produced on a mine roof by these members. Equations, obtained from laboratory and field tests, are given for calculating the contact forces between the roof strata and a typical truss. Actual contact forces for a specific truss are difficult to estimate because of variable friction loss at the contact points. A finite-element analysis, using typical contact forces, indicated that trusses have a negligible effect on the stress field in massive, competent roof strata. The effectiveness of trusses in supporting broken rock strata was not analyzed. However, experience has shown that trusses are effective in supporting incompetent roof.
