This Bureau of Mines publication summarizes the status of mine electrical equipment reliability research. Failure rate data were estimated from theoretical, laboratory, and field studies. Tables are presented listing reliability characteristics of molded-case circuit breakers, undervoltage relays, ground check monitors, cables, motors, and control circuitry. Application of failure rate data is shown in tables listing maintenance scheduling intervals of components and components that are most sensitive to the probability of hazardous voltages on power distribution systems in the mines. Complete, accurate, and appropriate failure rates on mine equipment are of the utmost importance for reliability evaluations.

Despite the use of warning alarms to alert miners to the backward movement of large mining equipment, miners still are injured too frequently in backup accidents. Currently approved backup alarm technology consists of continuous sounding alarm systems. New technology has developed a warning system that initiates an alarm only if there is an object close behind the vehicle. This advancement eliminates constant exposure to the alarm because a warning is given only in case of a potential collision. Adoption of this development can improve safety and reduce damage, especially for front-end loaders (FEL's). It will also eliminate a source of nuisance noise in urban and residential areas. This Bureau of Mines report describes the general characteristics of infrared (IR) light, ultrasonic wave, and Doppler radar technology as used for backup alarms, and reviews the testing of the most promising detection devices.

During studies of the various methods for determining and specifying the factors that indicate whether a particular coke is better or worse than other cokes for metallurgical uses, questions arose as to the precision of screen-analysis tests on coke. Although the usual index of precision, the standard deviation of the test result, gives a measure of the precision of these data, the experimental determination of the standard deviation for a particular set of conditions requires tests on a large number of duplicate samples. Because this procedure necessaily involves a great deal of labor, an equation for predicting standard deviations from theoretical considerations has been developed. Results predicted with this equation agree satisfactorily with the experimental values and are applicable to tests on coal, coke, gravel, and other bulk materials.

This study was undertaken to provide a more adequate knowledge of the chemistry of the sulfide volatilization process for recovery of tin from low-grade Bolivian ores. The investigation was partly supported by the Department of State under its program for scientific cooperation with South American republics. The results of this investigation demonstrate the conditions under which cassiterite (Sn02) may be converted to stannous sulfide by reaction with pyrite or sulfur vapor, Quantitative data are given on the rate of sulfidization and on the vapor pressure of stannous sulfide.

In this island, which is a Crown colony of the British Empire, and where remarkably extensive remains of ancient mining operations-- mainly for copper--exist, the mining law of Turkey governs, rith such modifications as were made necessary by the transfer of the country in 1878 from Turkey to Great Britain, and with such fer ameliorations thereof as have since been ordered by the local authorities. The Turkish law to which Van agenen refers is, no doubt, "2 Shaban, 1285," which though subsequently repealed with respect to Turkey is still in force in Cyprus, inasmuch as the mines regulations (amendment) law of 1925 "is to be read in connection with 2 Shaban, 1285" (articles 61 to 67 of which were repealed by the law of 1925): In the preparation of this digest; access was had to the mines regula- tions (amendment) Iaw, No. 5 of 1882; which Van Wagenen does not mention. Other Cyprian laws, passed since the publication of Van Wagenen's work in 1918, are the following: Eines regulations (amendment) law, 1925, No. 12 of 1925; mining-prospecting permits; notification, No. 539 of 1927; mines regu- lations 1926, No. 1006 of 1926; mines regulations (amendment) rules of court, 1926, No. 144 of 1926; mines regulations (amendment). 1a, 1928, ko. 3 of 1528 (as amended by No. 32 of 1928). Most of these làrs are concerned with the regulation of actual mining operation--safety and sanitary provisions; and, therefore, they ado little important information. The Cyprian Government's official publication says: It is considered that the laws regulating mining in Cyprus are inadequate and antiquated, and a thorough revision is necessary to bring them up to a standard of modern mining practice and to encourage mining ventures in the island. As a preliminary to this the mines regulations, 1926, were issued to govern the workings of the larger mines; and serious attention is now being given to the regulating of prospecting, quarries, machinery in mines, and generally to the bringing of mining in Cyprus into conformity with the other mining countries of the world.

The development of the Sevier Valley Coal Co.'s mine marks the opening of the Salina Canon coal district in Utah. The mine is favorably located with respect, to the existing markets of the West, and if the present estimates of the amount of workable coal in it are accurate it has many Important advantages in favor of its development. This mine is situated 18 miles east of the town of Salina, Sevier County, Utah, which at present is the nearest shipping point oh the Marysvale branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, and is about 152 miles south of Salt Lake City, which is the distributing center for much of the coal from the Carbon - Emery coal field and is the place from which nearly all Utah coal shipped to San Francisco and points on the northern Pacific coast has a common haul.

Several relationships between coexisting phases for analytical binary solutions near the critical point are given. These relationships were developed from a consideration of a (G u, P) surface at constant temperature and a (G u, T) surface at constant pressure, where G is the molal Gibbs free energy, u is the concentration of component 1 expressed as a mole fraction, G is the pressure, and T is the temperature. These formulas should facilitate the calculation of some of the quantities useful in making thermodynamic consistency checks on phase equilibria data about the critical point.

Statistical data on injuries in the metal and nonmetal industry of the United States first became available to the Bureau of Mines by collecting reports from the operators for the calendar year 1911. Since then reports have been collected annually. The present bulletin, covering the calendar year 1954, is the 31st publication (1933-34 was published as Bulletin 398) containing statistical data on injuries at metal and nonmetal mines and related plants, and it 1s the first such bulletin to be published since 1942. The last publication was Bulletin 461, Metal and Nonmetal-Mine Accidents in the United States, 1942. The unpublished statistics for 1943-53 may be found in the Appendix of this bulletin. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to collect data on injuries and related employment at metal and nonmetal mines, but there is no Federal law that compels operators to submit such information. Therefore, all materials submitted are voluntary responses to the Bureau's requests for information. The figures presented herein may not be complete for the entire industry, nevertheless, every effort has been made to make them so, and the data given are believed to be representative of the hazards to which metal and nonmetal workers are exposed. Moreover, the figures are comparable as between States-which is significant in view of the lack of uniformity among the States as regards classes of plants covered by State laws, classes of injuries covered by State reports, and other factors that tend to make it impracticable or impossible to compare the injury experience of one State with that of another or comprehend the relative importance of the various causes of injuries in the industry as a whole.

This paper describing the mining practices at Mine No. 1, Menominee Range, Mich., is one of a. series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. It is felt that the publication of this information will be of interest and value to the mining industry at large and especially to operators whose mining conditions are similar to those described. "IntroductionIt is commonly understood that aerosol particles may be injurious to human health if they are of a size that enables them to enter the respiratory tract. Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is one disease known to be caused by coal mining related particles.The location in the respiratory tract where the particles are deposited is primarily a function of the equivalent aerodynamic diameter (EAD) of the particle. The equivalent aerodynamic diameter is the diameter of a spherical particle with a density of 1.0 gm/cm3 with the same falling speed as the particle in question. For a spherical particle the calculation is rather simple in that the equivalent aerodynamic diameter is simply the diameter of the particle in question multiplied by the square root of the density of the particle. For irregularly shaped particles, such as coal particles, there is no simple way to make the EAD calculation. For example, Figure 1 is only one of an infinite variety of particle shapes that can be found in practice and the aerodynamic size of this particle and, therefore, its deposition location in the respiratory tract would be nearly impos-sible to estimate accurately.The normal method for determining the aerodynamic diameter of particles has been to experimentally measure the size of the particles in a settling chamber or with an inertial classifier such as an impactor, cyclone or a centrifuge, since inertial classifiers have the property of classifying the particles according to their aerodynamic diameters."") However, these devices can only give limited information on the EAD of a single particle with a specific shape. Impactors and cyclones, for example, collect particles in size ranges and not at a specific size, so the determination of the EAD of a specific particle is not possible. A centrifuge, on the other hand, can measure the EAD of a specific particle but the equipment is costly and procedure laborious, and it may not be possible to disperse a particle of a specific shape into the centrifuge. The centrifuge can be used to determine the EAD of clusters of spheres in various arrays, but introducing particles of a specific irregular shape may not be feasible. Furthermore, the EAD is a function of the orientation of an irregularly shaped particle and the orientation of a particle in an inertial classifier is unknown. The orientation may also vary as the particle passes through the classifier.Because of the difficulty in determining the EAD of an irregularly shaped particle, we have undertaken a program to apply theoretical numerical methods to calculate the EAD of any shape particle. In our laboratory we have, for some time, been using numerical methods to determine the flow field of air within instruments such as impactors, (2) inlets, (3) and virtual impactors (4) Recently, this technique has been expanded into the three-dimensional regime, and the flow fields and particle motion characteristics within cyclones (5) and glove boxes have been studied. We have now begun to use these numerical three-dimensional flow programs to study the flow field around irregularly shaped particles to determine their drag coefficients, falling speed, and thus, their EAD."

The supply of manganese is a subject of much interest. The idea of obtaining it from rhodochrosite-MnC03 is attractive because the carbonate is supposed not to be so contaminated with impurities as the commonly utilized oxides. Large bodies of rhodochrosite-bearing rock have been known for a long while to exist at Butte, Mont. Hence samples were obtained from that place. In the two samples examined quartz was the chief diluting substance. The leaner sample was about one half quartz; some copper, lead, zinc, and iron sulphides were also present. The rhodochrosite amounted to about 40 per cent, so that the sample had a tenor of about 20 per cent manganese. This sample was the subject of the examination reported herein.

The Rickard mine in York County, S. C., named for the original owner, Alexander Rickard, was operated about 50 years as. No records are available of the quantity of corundum shipped. Pratt states, "Many tons were picked up from the surface and shipped." The mine was visited on August 6, 1943, by the author, accompanied by Gilbert W. Withers of Atlanta, Ga. Investigation of the property was begun by the Bureau of Mines after some initial work by the Mi-Cor Corp., a company organized by Gilbert P. Withers of Atlanta to explore the property. In conducting the Bureau program, 754 linear feet of trenches were dug, 110 feet of old drifts cleaned out and examined, and 38 feet of shaft retimbered.

This report covers the character, properties, origin, occurrence, and uses of the traprocks and describes briefly the methods and equipment employed in quarrying and preparing them for market. Production of traprock occupies an important place in industry. In 1960 the output in the form of crushed stone reached nearly 58 million tons valued at $87 million. Traprocks are also shaped into blocks of dimension stone for monuments, building construction and decoration, and specialized products such as surface plates.

The United States Bureau of Mines has been conducting investigations of electrical equipment curing a period of more than 25 years in an endeavor to encourage the development of safer electrical equipment for coal mines. In order to conduct these investigations in an orderly manner they are carried out under a published schedule of tests known as Schedule 20, which specifies detailed requirements for motors, controllers, etc., and fees covering the various inspections and tests made as part of a routine investigation.

Enormous quantities of limestone are used for metallurgical purposes. Approximately 23 million tons were so used in the United States in 1925 chiefly for smelting iron ores in the blast furnace. Smaller amounts are used in basic open-hearth steel manufacture, and in smelting lead, copper and antimony ores. Most limestone producers lave little knowledge of the way in which their stone is used in metallurgy. Maximum tolerances of silica, alumina, sulphur and possibly magnesium; and minimum content of calcium carbonate may be arbitrarily fixed for the guidance of the producer, but aside from these requirements little information is available to producers on the manner in which their stone is used, the office it performs in smelting, or the effects of impurities. More complete [wledge] of utilization would enable limestone operators to solve their production problems more intelligently.

"INTRODUCTION The manganese deposits of the Drum Mountain area were investigated as two separate projects. The first was begun in November 1940 and completed in August 1941, and the second began in January 1945 and ended in May of the same year. The first project was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense. Subsequent operations disclosed conditions somewhat different than were expected, and it was decided that additional drilling should be done to delimit the ore bearing horizons further.The more promising manganese deposits in the Drum Mountains are situated on properties known as the Staats manganese mine and the Pratt manganese mine. The property controlled by the Pratt interests is under lease to the Ward Leasing Co. The 1941 project investigated the deposits on both properties, whereas the 1945 project was planned to explore further the oxidized ore bodies of the Pratt mine, although one hole was drilled in an attempt to extend the carbonate ore body on the Staats property (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "The realization that fuel costs, high as compared with those enjoyed prior to the war, are apparently permanent, has caused steam power plant operators to apply their best efforts towards improving the fuel economy of their plants.Though they have given much attention to the reduction in combustion losses by improving methods of firing and improved equipment, and to diminishing the heat losses by more care in maintaining clean heating surfaces and tight and adequate baffling, they have almost universally neglected the waste that occurs from discarding unconsumed combustible with the boiler refuse.This loss varies between extremely wide limits, depending on the quality of the coal, the type of plant and the firing practice in general, the higher the ash content of the coal the greater will be the amount of combustible appearing in the refuse, and the losses will be greater as the boilers are driven at higher ratings. The refuse from stoker fired boilers is apt to have a lower aver-eve percentage of combustible than that from hand fired boilers if operated at the same rating, but stoker fired boilers are usually pushed to higher ratings and the combustible in the refuse will run higher.In actual operating practice the amount of unconsumed combustible in the boiler refuse may range from a few percent to as high as forty or fifty percent. In an informal statement one well known combustion engineer estimates that the average amount of combustible in the refuse from a large stoker fired central station boiler plant is about 15 or 20%. Assuming that the coal burned contains 12% of ash, and allowing for flue dust losses, approximately two percent of the coal will be lost through this channel. The operating engineer of one large modern central power plant reports that when burning coal of about the same ash content, the average amount of combustible in the refuse was in the neighborhood of 33%, en tailing a loss of approximately 4% of the heating value of the fuel fired. Where the coal used daily runs up into hundreds of tons, an appreciable economy could be effected by recovering this percentage."

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to determine the feasibility of chlorine-oxygen leaching for treating low-grade zinc sul-fide flotation concentrates. Recovery of zinc sulfides by flotation from complex fine-grained sulfide ores is substantially higher in low-grade bulk sulfide concentrates than in the high-grade cleaned concen-trates required for smelter feed. However, there is no commercial process in the United States for the treatment of low-grade bulk zinc sul-fide concentrates. Leaching experiments using reactors of 500-mL and I-gal capacity were conducted on a bulk concentrate containing 19.3 pct Zn, 35.6 pct Fe, and 39.4 pct S. The effects of pressure, temperature, and percent solids on extraction were investigated. The chlorine-oxygen leaching procedure showed promise for treating the concentrates. Zinc extractions of 95 pct or more were obtained by leaching at 50 pct solids in the temperature range of 1000 to 1200 C. Zinc extractions by leaching with chlorine followed by oxygen at reactor pressures of 50 to 100 psig were independent of pressure.

Exploration of the Antimony Peak district by the Bureau of Mines was conducted under the authority of the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939. Antimony was one of the seven metals designated at that time as strategic by the Secretaries of War, Navy, and Interior upon advice of the Army and Navy Munitions Board. As a result of many field examinations, the Antimony Peak property was chosen as one of the most attractive for the possible development of emergency antimony reserves. Exploration by the Bureau of Mines began in November 1940 and was concluded in May 1941.
