The demand for aluminum for military use during World War II called for an expansion of aluminum production in the United States A large part of the bauxite (the normal ore of aluminum) consumed in this county comes from Netherlands Guiana, South America. During the war, enemy activities were at times a serious threat to the flow of bauxite to the United States. The need for aluminum. stimulated the investigation of domestic deposits of bauxite and emphasized the wisdom of studying other aluminous materials, such as high-alumina and diaspore clays, to determine their possible use as aluminum ores. The occurrence in Pennsylvania of high-alumina flint clays and nodular diaspore clays has been known for many years. Several companies are mining these high-alumina, low-iron (less than 3 percent Fe2O3) clays and using them for the manufacture of refractory brick. Most of the production has come from Clearfield County, but clay deposits arc known also in Cambria, Centre, Clarion, Clinton, Indiana, Jefferson, Somerset, and Westmoreland, Counties.

"The Piedmont Manganese Belt extends from Taliferro County, Georgia, 70 miles in a northeasterly direction through Greenwood County, South Carolina, and conforms with the trend of the Piedmont Province. The total area of the belt is reported to be about 1,000 square miles, and the maximum-width is about 24 miles.Manganese has been known to exist in the belt since 1845. M. Tuomey mentioned a deposit in the Edgefield district on Hard Labor Creek in South Carolina in a report on the geology of South Carolina published in 1848.Ore was first mined about the time of the first World War, when the Colley mine, near Lincolnton, Ga., was. Opened. The only operation in the area at present is that of the Abernathy & Kehaya Mining Co., at McCormick, S. C.The geographical position of the belt is from west longitude 82° 57’, north latitude 33° 39' to west longitude 82° 06', north latitude 34° 08'. The towns of Washington and Lincolnton, Ga., and McCormick and Greenwood, S. C., are in or near the belt.An exploratory project of the Bureau of Mines was started on the McCormick, S. C., deposit in April 1944, and trenching, test pitting, and hand-auger drilling-were done on a small scale until early in October 1944. (Fig. 1.) In November 1944 work was begun on a property 12 miles north of McCormick, known as Parsons Mountain, which is leased to M. H. McKnight by the United States Forest Service. From March 15 to March 24, 1945, work was done on the property of Mrs. H. B. Ross, which is known as the Morgan farm.The Abernathy & Kehaya manganese mine contains what is locally known as the Dorn gold mine; mineral rights on the property were owned by M. G. & J. J. Dorn, Inc."

"Two in vitro systems are being developed to model initial stages in the interaction of respired dusts with the acinar region of the lung. Incubation of quartz and kaolin with dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, suppresses the prompt C)1otoxicity of both dusts as measured by in vitro enzyme release from pulmonary macrophages or assay by erythrocyte hemolysis. Additional data is presented to quantitate the detoxification of quartz and kaolin by dipalmitoyl lecithin. Subsequent incubation of lecithin treated dusts with phospholipase enzymes results in partial to complete restoration of the assayed cytotoxic potentials, dependent on the lipase activity applied, the incubation time, and the mineral. Restored cytotoxic potential is due to removal of the prophylactic lecithin surface coating and/or due to residual lysolecithin which is produced by the partial enzymatic digestion of lecithin. Data is presented on the contribution of each mechanism to the restored toxicity. Again, this is dependent on the mineral used, the lipase activity applied, and digestion time. Additionally, a system is under development to challenge pulmonary macrophages in culture with native and surfactant treated dusts. A preliminary test of the dipalmitoyl lecithin - quartz rabbit pulmonary macrophage system is presented to illustrate the method.IntroductionRespirable quartz dust exposure is known to cause librotic lung disease; respirable clay dust exposure is less likely to do so as indicated by epidemiologic data on occupational exposures and by animal model studiesP·7) The hypothesis that damage to pulmonary macrophages in the acinar region of the lung by respired dusts is an early event in the disease process requires consideration because kaolin clay and quartz dusts are comparably cytotoxic to pulmonary macrophages in vitro.(3•9)"

Twenty-nine sole-heated-oven expansion teats were made on 9 different coals, and apparent specific-Brevity tests were made on 12 of the resultant cokes. The coals, which ranged in dry, mineral-matter-free fixed-carbon content from 58.7 to 81.1 percent, were tested over a rather wide range of moisture content and dry-coal bulk density to determine the separate effects of these variables on linear coal expansion. The experimental data support the follow expression relating "as-tested" coal bulk density, moisture content, and linear expansion, [ER = (1-MR) (1+Et) - 1; BDt] where ER = fractional expansion at a reference bulk density of 55.0 lb. of 1 percent moisture coal per cu. ft., Et = fractional expansion at Mt and BDt, MR = reference moisture content = 0.01, Mt = moisture content, "as-tested", BDR = reference bulk density = 55.0 lb. per cu, ft., BDt = bulk density, "as-tested", 1b. per cu. ft.

A new, cheaper precipitation scheme has been developed to produce purified zirconium oxide, Technical-grade sulfuric acid is used to precipitate a basic zirconium sulfate from a hot dilute hydrochloric acid solution. With close control of temperature, pH, and zirconium - sulfate ratio, excellent purification and complete zirconium recovery can be attained. The process has been successfully applied for 3 months and has proved to be a more satisfactory procedure than the ammonium phthalate process used previously. "INTRODUCTION The behavior of particulate systems in general is determined by the properties of the solid and fluid phases and of the interfaces between them. As particle size is reduced, the inter facial effects become increasingly important until, in colloidal systems, they become completely dominant. Interfacial phenomena are especially important in coal processing for a variety of reasons. Because coal is naturally hydrophobic and its density is low, surface forces begin to dominate over gravity at relatively coarse sizes. Coal is thermodynamically unstable in the presence of air, so that surface oxidation occurs readily leading to important variations in surface properties with time and environment. These effects are further compounded by the inherent heterogeneity of the material.Surface characteristics and properties play a significant role in most aspects of coal processing. Comminution, for example, is a process of creating new surface, while agglomeration involves the reduction of surface area and is usually controlled by surface forces. Both solid-solid and solid-liquid separations are influenced by interracial phenomena, Gravity separations are usually performed in a liquid phase and are affected by the wetting characteristics of the various solids present and by the need to ensure proper dispersion of the individual particles. Froth notation, of course, separates particles on the basis of differences in surface characteristics. Chemical processes such as leaching generally involve interfacial reactions whose rates depend on surface area and may be influenced by electrochemical effects in the electrical double layer at the solid-liquid interface, or by adsorption of reactant and/or product species from solution. Solid-liquid separations and associated processes such as flocculation are strongly dependent on the nature and properties of the solid-liquid interface.In characterizing solid surfaces, it is important to consider first the surface area, since this determines the relative importance of the interfacial effects. The structure and chemical composition of the surface may depend on the distribution of different petrographic constituents and impurities such as finely disseminated mineral matter, on the extent of surface oxidation, and on adsorption from the environment. These, in turn, will generally determine the surface properties which define particle behavior. Since the relationships between structure etc. , and properties are not generally known, it is usually necessary to measure properties such as wettability and electrical charge directly."

Through the development of manufacturing processes whereby ethylene glycol can be made on a large scale; ethylene glycol dinitrate is now being used in high explosives (dynamites and permissible explosives) by some manufacturers as a low-freezing ingredient of the "explosive oil" instead of such compounds as nitropolyglycerin and nitrosubstitution compounds. The amount of ethylene glycol dinitrate being used constitutes 25 to 50 per cent of the oil. The purpose of this report is to give the results of toots, to determine the effect on the safety and physical properties of permissible explosives of subsituating 25 peg cent of ethylene glycol dinitrate for an equal amount of nitroglycerin or a mixture of nitroglycerin and nitropolglycerin.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in a systematic evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases. These studies are designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy, facilitating the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena. This report is the fourth of a series4/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant systems. These calculations have as their objective the evaluation of the constant pressure flame temperatures of methane-air, propane-air, and ethylene-air mixtures for a range of pressures.

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. The Danskin/South Fork Boise River study area is 40 air km southeast of Boise, Idaho. The 16,000-hectare, two-segment area is mainly underlain by Cretaceous-age granodiorite and an aplitic and pegmatitic complex of the Idaho batholith, Miocene-age rhyolitic tuffs and lavas, and late Tertiary-age basalt flows. No mineral resources were identified in the study area. One mine, The Flat Creek mine, which produced several ounces of gold and silver, was found in the study area. It is geologically similar to deposits in the Neal mining district, adjacent to the northwest corner of the area; gold mineralization occurs along east-northeast-trending faults and associated quartz veins, which dip moderately to steeply southeast, and within adjacent Cretaceous granitic rock. Samples indicate the Flat Creek deposit is not rich enough to mine underground, and near surface, open-pit-mineable deposit areas could not be identified. However, exploration is warranted there and also in the 7-km interval to mines in the Neal district, and for extensions of those mines. No evidence of geothermal activity was observed, although there are hot springs in the vicinity. Some alluvial (placer) samples from the interior of the study area contained free gold, but no substantial gravel deposits were seen.

Ground support for metal, nonmetal, and coal mines was examined through fill placement with a pneumatic stower to increase extraction, reduce ground pressures, and improve general mine safety. Several pneumatically stowed stope-fill products were tested to determine the effects of specific gravity, gradation, moisture, and impact velocity on the in-place density of the stowed fill. Hydraulic sand filling has now served the mining industry for several decades but because of the low density does not always provide ample support to the hanging wall; therefore, the sill and crown pillars sometimes build up excessive stresses that are detrimental to mining. Cementation of a dense fill adjacent to a pillar to allow 100-pct extraction of the pillar, or a fill that can be placed without the use of water and where water is a detriment to rubber-tired mining equipment, was found to be a possible use of pneumatic fill. Placing of coal mine washery products into abandoned underground workings is another possibility in order to completely eliminate surface impoundments.

This report on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines is one of a series of such reports. It presents compilations of' inspection data furnished on their products by 15 manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation gasoline and special data obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on 68 samples of these gasolines. Data are presented for 18 samples of grade 80, 20 of grade 91/98, 21 of grade100/130, and 9 of grade 115/145 aviation fuels. The gasolines are designated January 1948 production, although some of the samples actually were produced at a later date.

The microstructures of a CF2Br2-inhibited methane flame and its uninhibited analog have been determined using molecular beam-mass spectrometry. The slightly lean flames were stabilized on a cooled porous plug burner at reduced pressure. Composition profiles of stable, intermediate, and radical species and temperature profiles were obtained. Comparisons of the uninhibited and inhibited flame profiles revealed the following inhibition effects; a shift of the primary reaction zone to higher temperatures, a higher maximum flame temperature, an increase in the CH3 concentration, and a reduction in the H2CO, H, 0, and OH concentrations. Kinetic analyses of the data yielded rate coefficients at flame temperatures for the reactions H + CH4 ? CH3 + H2, H + O2 ? OH + O, CO + OH ? CO2 + H, and CH3 + O ? H2CO + H. CF2Br2 is judged to decay by thermal decomposition and abstraction reactions.

The following information on accidents in Alabama during 1930 was compiled from data obtained from the companies represented in a course on accident prevention given by the United States Bureau of Mines in Birmingham. These mines produced nearly three-quarters of the tonnage of that State for the year, and included most of the larger operations in the district. The figures are probably representative of the mines which are doing recognized safety work, and are better than the average for all the mines in Alabama. Table 1 lists the days lost in accordance with the weights given to fatalities and permanent disabilities, part and total, which is the scale used in the National Safety Com¬ petition for Mines, conducted by this bureau. By way of explanation, temporary disabilities are weighted according to actual number of calendar days of disability, including Sundays and holidays — that is, all days are counted except the day of accident and day of employee's ability to return to duty. Hernia is classed as a temporary disability to be charged with the actual number of calendar days during which the employee was unable to work. Table 2 gives the number of accidents and the days lost from each cause at 45 coal mines and 7 iron ore mines, also the average frequency and severity rates.

During investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from several properties in Montana. Extensive laboratory tests were made to determine the amenability of these ores to standard ore-dressing methods of concentration to produce marketable-grade products. The Tzarena claim, one of the properties sampled, is on the western end of the Rama or Black Chief vein in the city of Butte, Silver Bow County, Mont., on the southwestern periphery of the mining district. The Black Chief 'WAR system contains one of the largest and most extensive known rhodochrosite deposits in the world. Test work was conducted on two samples of Tzarena ore. Sample 1 is representative of a vain 5 feet wide on the 150-foot level of the Tzarena shaft. Sample 2 is representative of a vein 8 feet wide in the 100-foot level of the shaft. The Minnie Jane mine, 1/2 mile northwest of the Tzarena claim, contains ore similar in mineralogical composition to Tzarena ore but differing materially in manganese content and to some extent in physical characteristics. Ore-dressing investigations were made on three samples of Minnie Jane ore. Sample 1 represented stock-piled ore, sample 2 represented ore from Minnie Jane mine having a considerable sulfide content, and sample 3 represented low-grade ore.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), as part of a comprehensive program to improve mine safety through the widespread acceptance of careful excavation principles in drifting, have revisited standard drift round design concepts. Although the initial emphasis was on contour row design and providing improved design tools for blasting with de-coupled charges, the focus has broadened into the development of a general gas pressure-based drift round design approach. The concept of a damage radius (Rd) for a given explosive-hole-rock mass combination is introduced. With the damage radius as the basic building block, the blast holes are positioned on the face, beginning with the buffer row, to achieve the desired excavation size, shape and smoothness. The design of the contour row of holes is also performed using a pressure-based approach. The paper presents in some detail the overall approach and the required gas pressure-based design equations.

Under the investigation for critical and strategic minerals the Kaiser mine, formerly the Baxter fluorspar property, in northeastern Mineral County, Nev., was explored. The work comprised excavating 32 trenches averaging 90 feet in length, 8 feet in width, and 1 1/2 feet in depth. The trenches were excavated across the strike of the ore body to enable the engineer to spot the diamond-drill holes; 7 such holes were drilled, aggregating 3,276 linear feet. A total of 20 core samples and 107 sludge samples was taken. The work under this program indicated that the fluorspar southwest of the deposit extended laterally and also at depth at least 250 feet below the 400-foot level. INTRODUCTION The Kaiser fluorspar deposit is in the northeastern portion of Mineral County, Nev. Mining was begun about 1928, and the property has been a consistent producer of both Acid- and Metallurgical-grade fluorspar. The mineralized zone has been developed along a strike length of about 2,000 feet and to a depth of over 700 feet along the dip.
