The Malheur-Jordan Resource Areas (MJRA?s) is a tract of approximately 6.5 million acres of federal and non-federal land in the southeast corner of Oregon. This study evaluated the Resource Areas' economically recoverable mineral potential based on geological estimates provided in the USGS report (Smith, 1994). The mineral terranes are believed by geologists to contain undiscovered resources. The geological data is probabilistic; with estimates of the possible number of deposits and their grades and tonnages. Possible future development scenarios range from no development to numerous mines. Based on the analysis performed on these terranes, the most likely (in a statistical sense) future scenario for the resource areas would include the potential for two medium sized, predominately gold, mines. These would supply direct and indirect employment of up to about a thousand workers.

The Bureau of Mines and El Paso Mining and Milling Co. conducted a cooperative in situ leaching research program at the Emerald Isle mine near Kingman, Ariz. The objective of this research was to develop in situ leaching methods for 200,000 tons of ore exposed in the pit bottom and also 3,000,000 tons of ore under 200 feet of overburden adjacent to the pit. The research included core drilling for fragmentation analysis, inplace permeability testing, seismic surveys, blasting tests, blast vibration measurements, inplace leaching, and ground water monitoring. A l5,000-ton test area in the pit bottom was blasted and leached inplace for 117 days. This successful test was followed by leaching 100,000 additional tons of unblasted pit bottom ore. Two test blasts, under 205 feet of overburden and extending to 290 feet, were detonated in an area near the open pit. The second blast was detonated because the first blast did not create adequate permeability for leaching. Pit bottom leaching was discontinued and the test area under 200 feet of overburden was not leached because the company terminated operations at the Emerald Isle mine. Based on the research completed, an expanded in situ leaching system was designed, but not implemented, to recover copper from a 1,500,000-ton area at the Emerald Isle mine.

This work was done in an attempt to find a simple solution to the problem of simultaneously changing terminal rate and terminal pressure under conditions of unsteady - state flow in porous media . Although the original aim was not realized , a method for encasing a sandstone core that would permit high - pressure ( 200 to 980 psi ) flow tests and the use of electronic equipment to measure pressures at points along the core during unsteady - state gas depletion was found to be feasible . The sandstone core used in this study was from the Bandera formation of Pennsylvanian age , Redfield , Kans . The core , cylindrical in shape with a 3.5 - inch diameter and 6- foot length , had a porosity of 15 percent and a permeability of 9 millidarcys .

"INTRODUCTION When tannin is present in a boiler water, it causes certain difficulties in many analytical testing procedures because of its colloidal action in interfering with the removal of suspended matter by filtration and also because of the color it imparts to the boiler water.For example, in any test for phosphate in boiler water the first step is to filter out of the sample all sludge and suspended solids. Calcium phosphate in the sludge would give high results if not completely removed. If tannin is present in the sample, the sludge and suspended matter tend to pass through the filter paper so that it is difficult to remove it all. It may even be that tannin makes some of the suspended material in the sample completely nonfilterable. If this is true, it would be necessary to destroy or remove the tannin from the sample before filtering to get complete removal of calcium phosphate from the sample. In addition, if the test used is a colorimetric one, the tannin causes interference by its own color.As the calorimetric phosphate test is so convenient for control purposes and the use of tannin for boiler water treatment has become common, it has become necessary to develop suitable methods for employing the colorimetric phosphate test for boiler waters containing tannin. In this paper three different methods for doing this arc described and studied."

This report, dealing with the separation of coal from its associated impurities by means of a pulsator-type jig, continues the series of reports that have been issued by the Bureau of Mines, in which detailed study has been made of the efficiency and mechanism of separating coal and impurities in various coal-cleaning appliances. The previous reports have dealt with the piston jig, coal-washing table, pneumatic table, and Baum-type jig.5/ Such studies of the separation accomplished by any form of concentration device are essential and necessarily preliminary to any intelligent attempt to improve the performance of such equipment Object and Plan The pulsator-type jig was developed recently by G. A. Vissac. Although two articles(2) describing plants using this type of cleaning unit appeared in 1936, both dealt principally with plant design and layout rather than with plant performance The object of the stork described in this report was to determine the efficiency of the separation made by the pulsator jig on a sized feed, the specific gravity at which the separation between coal and impurity was effected, and the influence of the specific-gravity composition of the coal on the character of the separation made.

The helper was killed, and the driller at the rig controls was severely injured. [ ] Case 2: A crew was preparing to remove a pump from a well when the hoist boom contacted a 4160-volt power line. The number of completed petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline in 1937 , but the total capacity to process crude oil continued to increase . These facts were ascertained in the Bureau's annual canvass of refinery capacity as of January 1 , 1938 . Several important changes were made in the census questionnaire for January 1 , 1938 . First , the basis of reckoning cracking capacity was changed from cracking stock charged to cracked gasoline produced . Although this is a definite improvement , in that it is no longer necessary to consider the yield , it is unfortunate that the data for January 1 , 1938 cannot be compared with cracking - capacity statistics since 1925. Other changes or additions included separating capacity at operating plants into that actually operating and that closed down ; collecting data on capacity added or retired during the previous year ; breaking down idle capacity according to physical status ; and separating new capacity into that built for replacement and that built to augment existing capacity . Prior to January 1 , 1938 , the total capacity of an operating plant was listed as " operating " even though some stills might have been closed down ; furthermore , the only capacity reported as being under construction was that of new plants that were being built on January 1. To make the statistics clear , the totals for the United States as of January 1 , 1938 , are given on both the old and the new bases . On January 1 , 1938 , there were 551 completed plants compared with 572 the previous year . Ten new plants were under construction on that date compared with 11 the year before . The greatest number of completed plants recorded was 632 on January 1 , 1936 ; since then , competitive conditions , particularly in the East Texas field , have been instrumental in reducing the number of small independent plants . The total crude- oil capacity of the completed refineries on January 1 , 1938 , was 4,351,151 barrels , of which 3,970 , 196 barrels ( 91 percent ) represented the capacity in actual operation and 380,955 barrels ( 9 percent ) was shut down . The " shut -down " capacity ( 199,875 barrels on the old basis ) was the lowest since pre- depression days , chiefly because numerous idle East Texas plants were removed from the list . The new method of compiling the statistics sheds considerable light on excess crudeoil capacity , which has been the subject of considerable speculation in recent years . The highest daily average crude runs to stills reached in this country was about 3,460,000 barrels in September 1937. At that time , the total crude - oil capacity was about 3,925,000 barrels . This indicates that at peak operation the excess capacity was somewhat less than

Mass spectrometric analyses were obtained for naphthalene and anthracene oils, heavy creosote, and three fractions of a pitch. The average molecular weight, aromaticity, and mean structural unit were determined for each fraction. The investigation of these fractions of coal tar has resulted in semiquantitative data for 38 structural types and carbon number distribution data for their alkyl derivatives. The molecular weights of 10 of these structural types indicate ring systems not previously reported in products from high-temperature carbonization of coal. Two of these structures are poly-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, two are oxygen-containing compounds, one contains sulfur, and five are nitrogen-containing compounds.

During the past several decades, there has been a steady increase in the number and size of experimental ovens used for carbonization research. Although many were originally intended principally for studies of coal expansion, current practice usually includes determinations of the properties of the experimental cokes. With respect to size and shatter characteristics, the cokes from the larger experimental ovens closely approximate those from duplicate charges carbonized in commercial ovens; however, they are consistently lighter and frequently less resistant to degradation by abrasive forces. To minimize these differences, some operators dry the experimental charges before carbonization. The resulting higher dry coal charge densities do, in fact, yield cokes with gravities closely approximating those produced commercially from the same coal or blend but without drying. The drying of the experimental charges may be criticized on the grounds that it represents a departure from commercial practice and may result in oxidation of the samples; for these reasons, the practice has not been universally adopted.

As a part of it investigations pertaining to the promotion of safety, the Bureau of Mines is investigating various means, useful for the elimination or mitigation of the explosion hazards of combustible gases encountered in mining and industry. Information has been obtained and a procedure developed whereby the explocibility of many complex, gaseous, combustible atmospheres may be calculated in a simple manner without the necessity of performing laborious laboratory experiments. In a previous publication4/ data were given and a method described whereby the limits of inflammability of gaseous mixtures, including methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and oxygen, could be determined by calculation. The information published in that report enables one to calculate the limits of inflammability of such gases as are liberated by mine fires, gases from explosives, automobile exhaust ran, uses present after mine explosions, blast-furnace gas, and other gases containing part of or all of the above-listed constituents.

This report describes the demonstration of longwall mining in a seam dipping 27 to 34'. Equipment was selected on the basis of capability, compatibility, and co t. Snowmass, Bureau of Mines, consultants and manufacturers were involved in the selection process. The equipment arrived in early 1981, prior to completion of development for the first panel; therefore, the equipment was operated on the surface for training. The surface training paid off with a fast, efficient installation and start-up of the face. The longwall equipment operated very well on the steep pitch with an average equipment downtime of 21.9[9]. Coal handling outby the face was a problem which caused an additional downtime of 19.5%. Development for the panels proved to be the major problem in the economics of longwall mining on a steeply dipping seam. During the first 9 months of operation the longwall averaged 71.9 TPMS and development averaged 0.6 TPMS for an overall average of 14.1 TPMS. Had mining continued, timing of development would have been another major problem. Monitoring of subsidence, pillar stability and shield loading was done in connection with mining, but little useful information was gained from the monitoring.

The Bureau of Mines developed a method to extrude low-density tungsten powder billets into rods and sheet bar with high-energy-rate forming equipment. Billets were compacted and sintered in an atmosphere of hydrogen to obtain a density of approximately 60 percent. Extrusion was conducted at reduction ratios of 6.25 to 1 and 9 to 1 at 1,800° C to prod e high-density, sound material. Yield strengths obtained were higher than those of material produced by conventional powder-metallurgy techniques, but ductility was lower at high temperatures.

Techniques were developed and circuitry was assembled for measuring the total and volume resistances to the flow of electric current through solid specimens of anthracite. The two-, three-, and four-terminal test methods demonstrated the extreme sensitivity of resistivity to differences in anthracite characteristics and showed response to changes resulting from variations in structure, temperature, and moisture content.

In this report the need to improve protection against power system faults is documented, and types of faults are identified. The Bureau of Mines investigated the threshold of dispersal of monolayers and piles of rock dust, anthracite, and Pittsburgh seam coal dust in a small wind tunnel that simulated a coal mine gallery, with the objective of preventing or limiting the formation of flammable dust clouds. The effect of selected variables on entrainment velocity was examined. Mode of entrainment and flow processes in the wake region of dust configurations were investigated by means of high-speed motion pictures. Significant results were as follows: 1. Local minimum air velocities required for dispersal were only slightly higher for shallow dust ridges than for dust particles. 2. Minimum velocities for entrainment of dust particles from smooth glass and coal surfaces increased in the order rock dust, anthracite, Pittsburgh seam coal. 3. The mechanism for dispersal of dust poles depended significantly on dust pile geometry, cohesiveness of dust, bulk density and compaction of dust, adhesive surface, and vibrations perturbing the supporting surface.

In the method used in the Health Branch of the Bureau of Mines for petro-graphic identification of the minerals in a rock, the sample is crushed, ground to a fine powder in a mortar, the powder is put on a slide, a drop of index oil and a cover slip are added, and the slide is ready for examination. The rock should be ground fine enough so that most of the particles consist of only one mineral, otherwise identification is difficult. Finally, the amounts of the minerals present in the sample are estimated to the nearest 5 or 10 percent. When quartz grains are mixed with some claylike minerals) of which by far the most common example is quartz and kaolinite in a shale, grinding in a mortar does not always separate the quartz from the kaolinite; instead, the quartz grains become coated with the kaolinite and are not visible, even after careful search. Talc acts Similarly, but muscovite and pyrophyllite do not. In evaluating the possible silicosis hazard of breathing dust from a shale, it is essential to be able to see and identify all of the quartz grains, as the other minerals present are relatively innocuous.

"SUMMARYThe Ione-Carbondale clays area is 2 miles northwesterly of Ione, Amador County, Calif. It was explored during the war by the Bureau of Mines to obtain data on the alumina content and to recover representative samples for beneficiation tests for alumina recovery.Seventy holes, aggregating 8,837 feet, were drilled, and about 10.3 acres of land was cleared of underbrush. Maps and cross sections were compiled showing location of holes, analyses, and other pertinent data.The clay beds vary in thickness from 13 to 196 feet, and are covered by a loose overburden, averaging about 11.9 feet in thickness. The ratio of overburden to clay is 1 : 8.2. Analysis of a composite sample showed the recoverable alumina (A12O3) and Fe2O3 content to be in the order of 23.6 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively.Topography of the clay area is ideal for open-pit mining methods and plant site.INTRODUCTIONInvestigation of alumina-rich clays for the possible production of aluminum was made during the recent war period, when the shortage of bauxite was becoming critical.Results of field examinations by the Bureau of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey indicated that one of the most promising areas for the development of alumina-rich clays is in the Ione-Carbondale district."

The Bureau of Mines has developed and constructed an apparatus that is capable of measuring concentrations of high-molecular-weight polymers in solution at 10 ppm and less. A means for determining low concentrations of polymeric solutions was devised that was independent of slight fluctuations in solvent quality in order to measure polymers in effluent prior to recycling of the recovered solution. The concentrations of polymers ore related to a measured pressure drop observed during turbulent flow of the solution. Low concentrations of polymers of ethylene oxide and acrylamide (frequently used as flocculants for clay waste systems) in aqueous and salt solutions have been successfully measured on the apparatus constructed by the Bureau.
