This Bureau of Mines report is concerned with the testing procedures for evaluating clays, shales, and slates for lightweight aggregates using the rotary-kiln method of production. To meet the increasing demand for light-weight concrete, rapid, accurate methods for appraising raw materials for light-weight aggregate are needed. Preliminary tests were made on samples of clay, shale, and slate, using laboratory equipment, and the data were used to establish operating conditions for pilot-plant-size rotary-kiln tests. Lightweight concrete was made from the processed aggregates and the properties determined. The results show that the laboratory data can be used to guide rotary-kiln testing, and, with the exception of sampling, a complete appraisal of a raw material for lightweight aggregate concrete can be made in 3 days by the methods described in this report.

Volatilization in retorts has been, until recently, the only commercial process of producing spelter, hence the zinc mine operators have had to meet the terms of the zinc smelters in regard to the following requirements: (1) Minimum percentage of zinc the ore must contain; (2) the chemical combination of the zinc in the ore; (3) the proportion present of those elements that interfere with the suceessful recovery of the zinc when the ore is retorted. In consequence of these requirements, only a comparatively small proportion of the zinc ores mined can be shipped directly to the smelters.

The Bureau of Mines is active in programs pertaining to solid waste disposal and land reclamation. Nine reclamation projects of mining companies and six projects of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania were investigated to provide information on the procedures, costs, and results obtained from reclamation projects of bituminous coal-waste disposal areas. Refuse disposal costs of mining companies ranged from 9 to 28 cents per ton-mile, and quantities disposed of ranged from 600 to 4,500 tons per day. Spreading and compacting the refuse at the dump site ranged from 3 to 20 cents per ton. Cost of covering with soil and planting ranged from $750 to $1,646 per acre. Total costs of reclamation for the Pennsylvania projects ranged from about $1,800 to more than $15,000 per acre. Refuse preparation costs ranged from $772 to $5,550 per acre. Soil covering and planting costs ranged from $1,083 to $5,086 per acre. The best results were obtained by soil preparation and conditioning prior to planting. The type and depth of soil and effect of climate were also factors.

This report describes the engineering feasibility and economic advantages of using a mobile bridge-type cross-pit belt conveyor system in conjunction with a large dragline to excavate and transport spoils in a typical Western surface coal mine. The studies show that such a system could be built to survive operational and climatic mining conditions, and that its implementation would offer a reduction in both acquisition and operating costs versus conventional mining units of comparable rapacity. Reclamation costs can also be significantly reduced, and the total reclamation process accelerated, making the cross-pit conveyor system attractive to mine Owners and environmentalists alike.

"INTRODUCTION The Iron Mountain deposits were examined in the summer of 1943 by engineers of the Bureau of Lanes, and a diamond-drilling project was set up under the Strategic Minerals Program. Actual drilling operations, under the supervision of a Bureau engineer, commenced November 9, 1943, and were completed on November 1, 1944. When the Bureau began detailed exploration of the Iron Mountain deposits, the Federal Geological Survey participated. Dr. I. W. Newhouse, of the Survey, and Dr. A. F. Hagner, of the Wyoming Geological Survey, were assigned to the investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Automatic control of drum head continuous mining machines was investigated as a means of reducing respirable dust generated and operator variabitity. Literature survey, manufacturer interviews and mine visits were the major information sources. Technically feasible automation concepts were Identified to control sump and shear rates, cutter head elevation limits and sumping distance. These are the elements of a programmed cutting cycle which maintains peak penetrating force on the cutter, to maximize depth of cut and therefore reduce dust generation. Based on the industry surveys, successful underground hardware demonstrations must be completed in order to stimulate the market demand for these advanced control features.

Gases and vapors given off by petroleum and its products have long been recognized as somewhat injurious, when inhaled in high enough concentrations. The petroleum industry has recognized these effects and has tried to minimize the possibility of employees encountering dangerous concentrations of the vapors. Petroleum gases and vapors have not, however, been considered as actively poisonous, in the sense that hydrocyanic (prussic) acid and phosgene are poisonous; men have been exposed to them repeatedly, and for long periods, without any marked ill effects. Light Mexican crude oil when first introduced into the United States for refining was handled in much the same way as was customary with other apparently similar crudes; but experience soon showed that some toxic substance escaped from the crude during production and transportation and in most of the refinery operations. After a preliminary investigation several of the larger companies decided that the gases from the petroleum were the source of trouble, and therefore took precautions, wherever possible, to protect the men from exposure to these gases. With the increasing use of Mexican crude, this problem has become important. The present report covers the work done on the subject by the Bureau of Mines and the Public Health Service under a cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute.

The United States Bureau of Mines frequently receives requests for information regarding the details of its organization and the nature of its activities. In response to such an inquiry a series of articles outlining the work of the bureau as a whole and of its different divisions was prepared and published in the United States Daily, Washington, D. C., during November, 1929. These articles are reprinted here in the hone that they may assist in giving the public a more complete understanding of the aims and purposes of the bureau and the methods by which it is laboring for the attainment of safer conditions and more efficient methods in American mineral industries. Tables based on 1985 data, which were not available in time for publication of the "1985 Minerals Yearbook," are included in this chapter; corresponding tables for 1986 are not yet available. Raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1986 had an estimated value of $23.5 billion, an increase of $0.25 billion over the 1985 value. This is the fourth consecutive year that the value has increased, and except for a de- crease in 1982, the value each year has increased since 1971, or 14 out of 15 years. Industrial minerals growth slowed from a 3% increase in value in 1985 to a 1.5% increase in 1986, reflecting the slow growth in the domestic economy. The value of industrial minerals, more than three times larger than the value of metals, easily offset the less than 0.5% decline in the value of metal mine production. Although the decline was small, this decrease makes 1986 the fourth year in the past 6 years in which a drop in the value of metal mining production occurred in the United States. U.S. production continued to lag behind the growing world production. Overall, the estimated raw nonfuel mineral production rose 1% over that of 1985. Domestic mine production of ferrous metals declined as follows, in decreasing order of production: nickel, iron ore, tungsten, and molybdenum. All remaining domestic primary nickel and tungsten mines had closed down by yearend. Nonferrous metals that similarly declined included titanium, rare-earth metals, lead, silver, zinc, and magnesium. For the second consecutive year, aluminum, produced predominantly from imported bauxite, declined in production, while imports reached record-high levels. Somewhat modest gains were made in beryllium and copper. As has been the case for a number of years, gold was a bright spot in the domestic and internation-al metal mining industry. Gold production was spurred on by the increasing usage and development of heapleaching techniques that make lower grade ores, which were previously uneconomical, profitable. Additionally, various mining companies, the U.S. Mint, individual States, and a number of foreign countries began production of gold bullion and commemorative coins. Gold output in the United States increased from 2.43 million troy ounces (revised) in 1985 to about 3.73 million troy ounces in 1986, a dramatic 54% rise.

There has been a persistent need to forecast roof falls so that miner’s exposure to hazardous underground environments can be minimized. Several monitoring techniques have been developed and are used today with varying levels of acceptance in the mining industry. This paper examines the potential for monitoring microseismic emissions activity as a means of forecasting roof falls. The use of this activity to forecast roof falls has drawn only limited attention, resulting in a lack of published field performance data. This deficiency is being partially addressed by analyzing data obtained during longwall mining at Moonee Colliery in 1998. The Moonee data base contains a wealth of information concerning roof fall forecast parameters and the seismic alarm criteria used to develop these forecasts. Four seismic alarm criteria were developed and used by Moonee with varying degrees of success. Roof falls were forecasted 73% of the time with average forecast times of 54 minutes. Ninety percent of the predicted roof falls had a warning time, i.e., the time between warning and roof fall event, of greater than 1 minute. The fraction of forecasted roof falls decayed logarithmically as a function of warning time, until only 20% of events were predicted more than 100 minutes prior to roof falls. False alarms occurred in 50% of the warnings. Many of the false alarms were quickly followed by a cessation in mining which could have temporarily halted the on-going failure process. If mining had continued immediately after the false alarms, a roof fall may have occurred soon after. The microseismic activity collected from Moonee Colliery demonstrates that techniques to forecast roof rock instabilities in underground mines are possible.

"INTRODUCTION For many years it has been known that low-grade manganese deposits occur in the bluffs along the Missouri River Valley. Frequent attempts have been made to develop the ore and to produce a marketalble commodity but they have had little success. Under pressure of the war emergency and the shortage of manganese, the attention of the Federal Bureau of Mines was directedtoward the deposits.Manganese-bearing shale occurs from a point near Pierre, S. Dak., down the river to the Rosebud bridge near the Nebraska line (1).5/ The Bureau of,confined its work to the more accessible central portion of the deposits near Chamberlain, S. Dak. The ore occurs principally as concretionary nodules in the form of iron and manganese carbonates (manganosiarite and perhaps some manganocalcite; rhodochrosite has not been identified). At the surface the carbonate is often broken down so that the oxide of manganese gives the nodules a black The matrix or host rock is generally known as Pierre shale, composed of ""interbedded layers of bentonite, an altered volcanic ash, and dissemi¬nated bentonite particles,"" (2) and montmorillonite-beidellite clay minerals (3). The shale weathers to the very sticky gumbo characteristic of South Dakota and well-known to hunters and travelers in the area.The area selected for the experimental mining and pilot-plant work discussed in this report lies about 8 miles westerly from Chamberlain and is a few hundred feet north of U. S. Highway,16, on land owned or controlled,by M. Q. Sharpe of Kennebec, S. Dak., and the General Manganese Corp."

The Bureau of Mines has developed a passive encoder for range knobs, a device that automates the task of obtaining the range settings from devices or instruments to be input to microcomputers. It is easily constructed and installed and will not disrupt the device to which it is being attached. It consists of a custom knob and a small printed circuit board that has light-emitting diodes and magnetic reed switches attached. A ribbon cable connects it to a microcomputer. This encoder eliminates one source of human error in an automated process.

Contract H0177044 included three objectives; (1) consolidate, maintain, and distribute information on STE approved lighting systems; (2) develop and present one-day seminars on underground mine lighting; (3) determine direct labor and hardware costs associated with the installation of mine illumination systems. All objectives were completed with results as follows: Task I - A file containing 1350 Statements of Test and Evaluation (STE) for all types of underground equipment was developed and publicized throughout the coal fields, A total of 40 requests for STE information was received and processed. Task II and III - A series of 50 seminars was scheduled and presented to 942 attendees throughout the coal fields. The seminars were well received and attendees indicated the information presented would be helpful in bringing their equipment into compliance. Holding a series of seminars in the coal fields, instead of a few in population centers, was favored by attendees. Task IV - Installation cost data obtained on 415 lighting systems indicate that the factors which most affect installation costs are higher hardware cost for DC powered systems and slightly higher manpower requirements for systems installed underground. Based on these data, the total cost to industry of retrofitting existing underground equipment could range up to $50 million.

A variety of shaft and hoist equipment exists in the United States. Nearly all hoist systems are electrically driven. Machine elements which comprise the hoists and ancilliary equipment include bearings, shafting, drums, gear reducers, couplings, brakes, clutches, sheaves and electrical motors. Volume I, Systems Description, describes the various components encountered in most mine hoist and shaft installations, and brief descriptions of functions and constructions. Hoist ropes and balance ropes are specifically excluded from this report. Associated with the hoisting system is the headgear, shaft and equipment, loading/dumping facilities and the actual conveyances and their rope attachments. Volume II, Inspection and Maintenance Procedures, discusses scheduled Inspection and preventative maintenance in general terms. Preventive scheduled inspection and maintenance procedures assist in the smooth operation of mine hoisting plant, by the prevention of unscheduled or catastrophic equipment failure and its attendant downtime. Schedules and overall maintenance planning is required at the management level. Records and equipment logs must record inspection and maintenance, and unusual operations or incidents. A cross reference between MSHA regulations and various equipment components is included as part of the report. A discussion of the various non-destructive testing methods which may be applied to hoisting equipment is also included.

A study of the ignition of non-fire-resistant hydraulic fluid sprays was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Both an open flame and a hot steel surface were used as the external heat sources. With the open flame as the heat source, the minimum oil temperature and minimum spray nozzle pressure that resulted in an ignition were measured. The effects of the distance between the open flame and the nozzle and the nozzle orifice diameter on the ignitability of the hydraulic fluid sprays were examined. With the hot surface as the heat source, the minimum surface ignition temperature was determined. The degree of oil atomization and the relative direction of oil injection with respect to the hot surface are discussed. The ignition of oil sprays from the impingement of oil jets onto a vertical surface was also investigated. Finally, the results are compared with those obtained for fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. Timely and rapid intervention to underground combustion events (fires, explosions, and spontaneous combustion) is the key to the successful control of the mine atmosphere and restoring of a coal mine to production. The focus of this paper is the utilization of a GAG 3A jet engine system to combat either large out-of-control fires or to render an entire mine inert when access to problem areas is difficult or impossible. This system is based upon a Soviet designed agricultural jet engine which consumes aviation fuel with oxygen (O2) from the intake air and exhausts combustion gases, primarily carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O), along with the nitrogen (N2) from the air and small amounts of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2). The system is designed to approach stoichiometric combustion (ideally, pure burning that scavenges all the oxygen from the intake air). Therefore, these exhaust gases are almost entirely “inert gases”- i.e., gases which do not contribute to, and in fact, can suppress the combustion process due to the lack of oxygen. Other methods to inert mine areas have been used in the US and internationally, but these methods usually use low flow inertisation equipment or methods. Use of these low-flow inertisation equipment and methods has been successful in proactively rendering gob areas inert and has the ability to inert the entire mine workings. Man has been engaged in the construction of tunnels in. rock for several thousand years. During that time, methods of tunneling have changed drastically. Hordes of men chipping away at the tunnel face have been replaced by mechanical drills and explosives and by tunnel boring machines. Spoil is no longer carried on the backs of humans, but is now removed by trains, trucks or conveyor systems. These and other changes have had the effect of greatly increasing the rate of tunneling, while at the same time, greatly decreasing the potential dangers to workmen. Although the techniques, equipment and material used for tunneling are being continually improved, rock tunneling is still a slow and expensive process. Significant improvements and innovations are needed to reduce the cost and time required for tunneling if we are to fully utilize the subsurface to aid in the solution of urban problems and in the conservation of resources. This report is intended to facilitate the orderly development of tunneling technology by focusing attention on the inadequacies of rock tunneling and the improvements that are needed. The data presented were derived from the results of a comprehensive questionnaire that was completed during the summer of 1969 by more than 600 individuals and organizations in 17 countries. Table 1 lists the countries and the number of replies from each. Appendix A contains a summary profile of the national responses, while the text presents the results and a brief analysis of the conclusions that might be derived from the data in the questionnaire. The data shown in Appendix A represent the consensus opinion of each of the 17 nations without regard to the number of individual replies or the amount of tunneling activity that is represented. The national consensus was determined for each country by a plurality of the individual responses, in some cases modified by the opinion of the rapporteur. Tire above procedures can lead to situations which are misleading. For example, experience and activity arc a rational basis for analysis; but, if national replies are weighted on this basis (i.e., number of responses), informed and valuable opinion of less active countries would probably be overwhelmed and lost. In analysing the data on the basis of national responses without weighting, it becomes apparent that many of the same problems exist under a given set of conditions regardless of the number of tunnels that have been driven.

We present an analysis of the propagation in a uniform tunnel of semi -circular cross section that contains two axial conductors. In particular, we show that, even if one of these conductors has high ohmic loss, one of the two propagating modes has relatively low attenuation. This corresponds to the situation where an unloaded dedicated wire is used to improve radio frequency communication in a mine tunnel that contains a heavily loaded trolley wire.

"GENERAL STATEMENTThe purpose of this report, which is the first of a series of three covering mines in the Fairmont district of West Virginia, is to give the result of a' study conducted in seal mines to ascertain the nature of the safeguards employed to prevent injury to the workmen from falls of roof and coal. In presenting the subject matter, consideration must necessarily be given to factors, features, and conditions such as method of mining, timber regulations and practices, supervision and natural conditions; and, for comparative purposes, a certain amount of statistical matter bearing upon the relation of fatalities and injuries to their causes, tonnage produced, men employed, days worked, and time lost.Those features and practices found to promote safe protection are summarized and suggestions made for such additional safeguards and practices as appear to give greater protection against injury from falls of roof or coal.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis study of falls of roof and coal in mines in Harrison County has been conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with R. M. Lambie, chief of the Mining Department of the State of West Virginia who assigned L. W.
