In most oil fields, natural gas is the major source of energy causing flow of oil to the well. The amount of gas produced with the oil generally exceeds actual energy requirements, so that in time the gas reserve of the field becomes seriously depleted and the oil production must be stimulated by some auxiliary means. One of these is to repressure the oil formation with natural gas; or, where a as supply is not available, often air is used. Although air is a cheap and convenient repressuring medium, its use sometimes is attended with several disadvantages. First, the return air-gas mixture decreases rapidly in fuel value, often until it can be used no longer as a source of power. At the same time, explosive mixtures may result if recycling is used, causing hazards to life and equipment. Second, sortie fields experience considerable trouble with the formation of emulsions which become increasingly difficult to treat. Although there is no definite proof that air repressuring always causes these emulsions, many operators are convinced that this is the case. The Petroleum Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville, Okla., has been interested in problems connected with air-repressuring for a number of years. Some time was spent in studying the so-called "bad gas"--return mixture of low fuel value. However, it appeared impossible to attack the problem successfully from this angle, and an approach was made through a laboratory-scale study of direct oxidation of crude oil.

First - aid training is an essential part of safety programs in the mining industry , but it is only a means to an end ; first -aid training will not eliminate accidents , but unquestionably it is of considerable value in any accident prevention program . Numerous features should be incorporated in any efficient , well - developed safety plan ; in addition to first -aid training safety work , to be reasonably effective , should include the establishment and maintenance of a safety organization , safety competitions between mines or sections of mines , safety- inspection committees , accident - investigation committees , safety meetings of mine officials , safety bulletins and posters , employees ' safety publications , Holmes Safety Chapters (which provide for monthly safety meetings of all employees ) , and numerous other activities looking to safe operation of mine or plant . These features are supplementary to the fundamentals of safety-- adequate and effective supervision and discipline . Years of experience , however , have demonstrated that first - aid training is a good accident -prevention auxiliary and should be made an integral part of every company's safety program . Many safety-organization plans have failed because they have been based upon the assumption that the supervisory force should be given full authority and responsibility for achieving safety and eliminating accidents and that the workers , who are most vitally concerned , are nonessential . First -aid training causes the employees to feel that they have a personal and full participation in the safety program and is now available so readily that no individual or organization has any valid excuse for not having it . Early investigations made with a view to bettering health and safety conditions among the employees in the mineral industries demonstrated the need of prompt care of injured employees because , under the difficulties inherent in the occupation , seemingly unimportant wounds , when not treated promptly, became infected and caused permanent disability and even death . Many seriously injured persons , brought out of mines and plants by fellow workers who were ignorant of the approved methods of giving first aid or of safe means of transportation

With large deposits of low-grade molybdenum ore and a latent market for molybdenum, which with development might perhaps equal that for tungsten, the United States has for years made no pro- duction of molybdenum ore worthy of mention. In fact, during the decade previous to 1914, there was no output of molybdenum ore in this country except in 1905, 1906, and 1907, when a few small lots of molybdenite and wulfenite were marketed." To ascertain why this possible source of economic wealth should remain undeveloped, the United States Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation in 1914, with a view of assisting the establishment of a molybdenum industry in this country. A preliminary review of the situation showed the following conditions: Briefly there was a lack of any considerable demand for molyb- denum for the one known use that might consume any large tonnage of it, that is, for the manufacture to certain alloy steels to which molybdenum imparts properties roughly similar to those produced by tungsten. It was at once evident that the market for molybdenum in alloy steels must be developed, or that extensive new uses for the metal must be created, before the demand would be sufficient to war- rant any extensive mining of molybdenum ore. Investigation showed that one of the chief factors in retarding the development of any demand for molybdenum by the alloy-steel trade was that manufacturers who might use, or might investigate the possibilities of using, the metal were kept out of the market by the fear of not being able to obtain steady supplies. On the other hand, those who might be interested in the development of some of the extensive low-grade molybdenite or wulfenite deposits in this country were prevented from doing so by the small visible demand and the fear that any large production would glut the market. Owing to these conditions the mining of molybdenum has in the past been confined almost entirely to small-scale operations on high-grade streaks of molybdenite ore, and the methods of recovery have been limited largely to cobbing and hand picking.

On account of the extensive use of platinum during the World War , and the practical elimination of the Russian supply , the price of this metal rose to new high levels , as shown in Table 1 ; and though it since receded to some extent , the price is now nearly six times that of gold .

The Bureau of Mines investigated the concentration characteristics of high-clay sylvinite ores from four potash companies operating in the Permian Basin near Carlsbad, N. Mex. These ores, containing 13 to 22 percent K20 and 3 to 7 percent clay slimes, cannot be effectively processed by current commercial flotation methods because of their high slime content. A solution to this problem was shown to be the use of two-stage moderate scrubbing conditions and washing of the ore as opposed to strenuous attritioning. Bench-scale physical beneficiation techniques for recovering potash minerals and the development of ore-dressing systems by flotation resulted in obtaining acceptable product grades and recoveries. By using a coarse grind, emphasis was placed on production of premium granular and coarse products. Flotation results showed that concentrates of 58.7 to 60.4 percent K20 with recoveries of 71.0 to 83.4 percent 0f the K20 values can be obtained.

"INTRODUCTION The use of scrap mica as an industrial raw material has grown rapidly during the past two decades. Demands by various industries for ground mica for use in the roofing, paint, rubber, plastics, and wallpaper trades as well as for less extensive uses in insulation, oil-well drilling, welding, pipeline enamel, decorative material, and for other purposes exceed present (1947) supplies.A small proportion of the raw material used comes from the Black Hills of South Dakota, where casual recovery has been practiced in the exploitation of pegnatite deposits for more valuable minerals. The annual production of scrap mica in the Black Hills for the years 1939 to 1946 is shown in figure 19. 4/Although small, this production of scrap mica materially augments the incomes of numerous operators.Volume production of mica would offer attractive opportunities for obtaining steady and more economical supplies of the rare minerals as byproducts. Appreciable supplies of beryl, lithia minerals, sheet mica, tantalite-columbite, and cassiterite could accrue. Furthermore, a stable scrap-mica production would complement the production of quality feldspar, for which the Black Hills pegmatites are noted, and would help balance the economy of pegmatite mineral production.Mechanical methods of separation are requisite to production of enough scrap mica to be generally profitable. Various phases of the characteristics end treatment of mica have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines. A bibliography of these reports is appended.In 1945 the Bureau of Mines conducted pilot-plant tests to recover scrap mica by selective screening of crushed pegmatite. More recently the problem has boon studied in the Pegmatite Research Laboratory to aid in developing technological methods by which scrap mica may be separated from crushed pegmatite."

The Bureau of Mines investigated a geologically favorable area in the Beluga River coalfield in south-central Alaska to determine if there were sufficient minable coal reserves for onsite utilization to meet the projected thermal power needs of the Anchorage area. A program of diamond core drilling and sampling delimited a shallow saucerlike structure estimated to contain indicated reserves of more than 20 million tons of subbitminous coal in a seam over 50 feet thick that could be mined by opencut methods. A large sample of fresh coal was taken across the full width of the seam for washability studies. This sample, with 4 volume-percent of clay partings eliminated, contained 24.4 percent moisture and 16.8 percent ash and had a calorific value of 7,162 Btu per pound. The studies indicated that mechanical cleaning would be of doubtful value.

In recent years the Government and other large consumers of coal have appreciated more and more the desirability of definitely determining by chemical analysis and test the character and quality of the coal they purchase. Higher prices for coal point forcibly to the need of giving more study to engine room and boiler room efficiencies and economies; this implies an intimate knowledge of the character and quality of the fuel used. Analyses and tests of delivered coal furnish data whereby power plant results can be comprehensively studied and a continuous check maintained on the coal and on the conditions of plant operation. Under authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for technologic investigation of fuels and the analyzing and testing of fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the Pittsburgh station of the Bureau of Mines, where samples representing deliveries of coal purchased for Government use are analyzed and tested.

[This Is the ninth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the interior. The first report gave data on motor gasoline sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The Present report presents analytical data for 2,033 samples, representing the products of approximately 80 companies, which, as in previous surveys, include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data that were average by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before 'being submitted and are published exactly as they were received. As in previous surveys, the data are divided into the three groups of samples of regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines, and each group has been averaged separately. The cumber of samples, items, and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, arc as follows: Regular price, 1,066 samples, 208 items, and 49 brands; premium price, 575 tamales, 154 items, and 38 brands; third-grade gasoline, 7;4 samples, 150 items, and 53 brands. "Hydrogen aulphide associated with natural as was noted as early as at Point Albino, Canada. 4 The presence of this impurity was recognized also in other of the earlier oil and gas fields, although the occurrence ma by no means common. However, in recent years, with the development of the producing zones of west Texas and the Texas Panhandle the production of ""sour"" crude has increased greatly and hydrogen sulphide has proved a generally troublesome factor-frequently a major problem—in the drilling and operation of any wells in those areas.The problems arising from the drilling and producing of oil or gas wells in hydrogen-sulphide areas, fall under two general divisions: safety problems and corrosion problems. Mention is made of a third division which is closely related to the other two, that of treating--or the development of processes for the removal of hydrogen sulphide. From the standpoint of safety and health hazards, hydrogen sulphide in the petroleum industry has been discussed in a number of publications. 5 Likewise, the problem of hydrogen-sulphide corrosion of production equipment has been given considerable attention in the literature.6"

The Bureau of Mines at Morgantown, W. Va., has been investigating, on a pilot plant scale, various methods of gasifying bituminous coal with oxygen and superheated steam to produce synthesis gas, as part of the broader program of finding new uses for coal. Differences in the pressure gasification methods used have depended on differences in the manner in which the pulverized coal is fed to the gasifier. One of the methods of feeding the coal that was investigated was the continuous, integrated coal-water slurry system. Goal and water were first mixed to produce a slurry; then the slurry was pumped through a heated coil. to evaporate the water fraction; the resulting steam was superheated, and some of it was separated so as to adjust the ratio of the residual steam to the coal fraction and make the resulting mixture suitable for partial combustion with oxygen in a pressure gasifier. Both before and during this reported3 developmental work it was necessary to make an extensive literature search into the technology of aqueous slurries in order to establish design criteria for the pilot plant and to correlate results of various phases of the work with that of other investigators, The pilot work coincided with the commercial development of a long-distance pipeline for the transportation of coal as a coal-water slurry, and this fact tended to broaden the scope of the pilot plant work and the extent of the literature search. This bibliography is the compilation of the material that was collected.

The solubility of 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane (TBE) in water was determined from 1.0° to 97.0° C. The solubility (S) of TBE in grams of solute per 100 grams water was correlated with [S = 1,920.55 [exp (40292L7 11, T2 10 T 737.577 + 9.923962 ] where T is in degrees Kelvin. A thermodynamic analysis conducted on a system consisting of a TBE phase and a water phase in equilibrium with a vapor phase led to the calculation of the activity coefficient, vapor-liquid equilibrium distribution coefficient, relative volatility, and heat of mixing for saturated solutions of TBE in water. Data required for these calculations were the solubility of TBE in water and the vapor pressures of TBE and water as a function of temperature.

The opinion is general among smelter operators that magnetite formed in the converter and reverberatory furnace has much to do with the loss of copper in the slag. Its action appears to be due in part to its relatively high infusibility, chemical stability, and specific gravity, as a result of Which it tends to form a layer of highly viscous "magnetite mush" between slag and matte. Particles of matte which might otherwise settle out of the slag are unable to pass through this layer. Maier and Van Arsdele have shown that the inclusion of grills of matte in the slag is also at tires very probably due to chemical reaction between magnetite and the constituents of the matte. In smelter control and in any laboratory study of slats the determination of magnetite is therefore a matter of some importance. The difficulties in the ray of making such a determination with any accuracy are rather obvious. Iron may occur in slag as ferric oxide, magnetite, various intermediate oxides, sulphides, silicates, as free metal, and in solid solution of several of these substances. Even if only the total iron content is to be determined, accuracy can be obtained only by painstaking and time-consuming separations from interfering elements. The determination of ferrous, ferric, and free iron in the presence of each other is a difficult matter under the most favorable conditions, and when present in a slag the difficulties are increased by the refractory nature of the sample, by the presence of sulphides, and by such elements as vanadium and molybdenum.

Helium used as a tracer gas in petroleum reservoirs continues to show great promise as a new tool for the oil and gas industry, according to tests conducted jointly by the Bureau of Nines and The Pure Oil Co. in-the Cabin Creek field, Boone and Kanawha Counties, W. Va. Helium, when used as a, tracer gas, is mixed with natural gas being injected into a reservoir for secondary recovery of oil, recycling, pressure-maintenance, or other purposes. Three separate experimental helium tracer-gas tests were run in the Cabin Creek, W. Va., field, wherein helium was added as a tracer to the natural gas that was being injected into the oil-bearing Berea sandstone. The results obtained in each test permitted determining the direction and rate of travel of the injected gas, calculating the volume of injected gas in the gas produced at the various wells, and determining the nature of the transition from natural gas to injected gas during a gas-injection program. Data were obtained on the effects obtained from waves of injected gab containing 1 percent and containing 5 percent helium and from a wave of essentially pure helium injected into the formation.

"INTRODUCTION The Ahles iron mine, also known as the Pequest mine, in Warren County, N. J., was operated continuously for 15 years and was still in ore when it closed in 1916.Tie property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in March 1943. 3/ This examination led to an investigation of the deposits by the Bureau by diamond drilling two holes under the old workings to determine whether the extends downward.This report describes the work done at the Ahles mine by the Bureau and presents the data obtained.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bureau of Mines evaluated the impact of the depletion allowance upon the economic availability of copper from domestic deposits. The potential long-run percentage depletion deduction, cumulated over the life of the properties, was estimated at approximately $2.5 billion for producing properties and up to $11.7 billion for nonproducers. The income transfer, in the form of higher Federal income tax payments if the allowance were repealed, was estimated at $1.5 billion for producing properties and up to $8 billion for nonproducers. The percentage depletion allowance, through its role in determining Federal income tax liability, was found to be very significant in affecting profitability. Repeal of the allowance could result in major domestic copper availability reductions at all price levels, now and in the future, as a result of reduced profit margins for current producers, and postponement of development decisions for nonproducers. It was demonstrated that a 50-percent reduction in the percentage depletion rate applicable to copper would also result in a significant decrease in profitability for nonproducing properties. For producing properties, the percentage depletion rate on copper was shown to be less significant than the income limitation that is placed upon the total amount of the depletion deduction. Repeal of the minimum Federal tax provision was shown to be significant in enhancing profitability for both producing and nonproducing deposits. The report concludes that the percentage depletion allowance operates as an important method of capital recovery and production incentive.

Zirconium has possible use in industry where severe corrosion conditions are encountered because it resists attack from a variety of corrosive environments. However, very little experimental testing has been done to evaluate the corrosion behavior of zirconium when simultaneously subjected to high tensile stresses and exposed to corrosive environments. This investigation was initiated for an evaluation test, but was limited to environments consisting of ferric chloride solutions which were known to attack zirconium and were shown to promote stress-corrosion cracking in preliminary tests. Tests for cracking susceptibility were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to show the effect of stress, solution concentration, air aeration of solution, and the method of mechanical processing. Tensile stress was applied to the specimens by a constant-load method which proved more reliable than a constant-strain method.

The paper describing the raining operations at the Mt. Hope mine, Mt. Lope, N. J., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs of various mining operations in the United States. Mt. Hope mine produces magnetite ore. It is situated in the general northern part of the State of New Jersey. The towns of Rockaway, Wharton, and Dover lie within a radius of 4 miles from the mine. Dover is 40 miles from New York City.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 390 natural gas samples from 22 States and five foreign countries. Of this total, 385 samples were collected during calendar year 1969. The remaining five analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results were not received until 1969. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Eleven previous publications have presented the results of 8,660 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1969.
