Of the three chemical elements most vitally essential for plant growth the United States, before World War I, had developed ample domestic supplies of but one-phosphorus. During and shortly after the war period, the fixation of nitrogen was greatly expanded in this country, as in many others, insuring a supply adequate for agriculture as well as for munitions. However, in spite of a search for sources of the third element, potassium, which began years before the war, attained almost frantic intensity between 1914 and 1919, and continued for 10 years thereafter, it was not until 1921 that the American Trona Corporation put its Searles Lake operations into continuous production. This company in 1926 became The American Potash & Chemical Co. but has never supplied much more than 15 percent of the potash consumed in the American market. Likewise, though discovered in 1921 in drill cuttings from oil wells, it was not until 1926 that domestic deposits of potassium salts adequate to render the United States independent of foreign sources of supply were proved to occur in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico.

The 22d annual survey of the packaged-fuel industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 26 plants in 8 States were in operation and reported production in 1956. The demand for packaged fuel in the United States has declined gradually since the end of World War II, and the number of operating plants has decreased from 70 in 1946 to 26 in 1956. Annual productive capacity of the industry has decreased also during this period, and the decrease in capacity was about proportional to the decrease in operating plants. Packaged-fuel plants are relatively small, and 85 percent of the active plants in 1956 had an annual capacity of less than 10,000 tons. The same situation prevailed in 1946, when 84 percent of the plants had a capacity of less than 10,000 tons. Total capacity for the 26 active plants in 1956 was 174,600 tons, an average of 6,715 tons per plant. Operating rates in 1956 were the highest since 1951, and the rate of production for the industry averaged 37 percent of capacity.

In 1980, the Bureau of Mines investigated the northern Darby Mountains on the Seward Peninsula, AK, for radioactive mineral deposits. Uranium is concentrated in silicified shear zones in biotite quartz monzonite of the Darby pluton. The shear zones are best exposed in steep, narrow, avalanche gullies; they are characterized by radiometric anomalies and by uranium and thorium geochemical anomalies. Radiometric and geochemical anomalies are also found over altered biotite quartz monzonite where there are no visible shear zones. The radiometric and uranium anomalies are often spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with alkaline mafic and felsic dikes. Similar geochemical and radiometric anomalies over discolored altered zones and geochemical anomalies in sediments downstream from the altered zones indicate that additional areas may also be favorable targets for uranium deposits. Analyses of panned, heavy mineral concentrates show no significant concentrations of uranium or thorium in resistant heavy minerals. This indicates that radioactive elements in the Darby pluton are concentrated in soluble, nonresistant minerals that may constitute a recoverable uranium resource.

"Properties and Uses.Iceland spar is a name given to a pure crystallized form of calcite (CaCo3) which is sufficiently transparent and free of defects to be used in the manufacture of optical instruments. While the actual requirements are small, the degree of purity and physical perfection demanded renders it somewhat difficult to obtain suitable material.The properties of value in Iceland spar are its transparency combined with double refraction. It is used in the manufacture of polarizing microscopes, saccharimeters, colorimeters and photometers. Its most important use is in the manufacture of Nicol prisms, which constitute an essential part of every polarizing microscope. The principle governing the construction of the Nicol prism is as follows:Ordinary light in passing through a crystal of calcite is resolved into two rays of plane polarized light vibrating in planes at right angles to each other and having different indices of refraction. Thus the two rays follow different paths through the crystal. The prism of Iceland spar is cut diagonally and cemented together again with a transparent cement having an index of refraction intermediate between the two rays passing through the prism. Canada balsam is employed for this purpose. The prism is cut at such an angle that the ray having the greatest index of refraction meets the surface of the balsam at an angle greater than the angle of total reflection, and it is thus deflected to the side of the prism, while the second ray passes through. Thus one of the rays is eliminated and polarized light vibrating in a single plane is obtained."

The Bureau of Mines study described in this report was conducted in the Denver, Colo., area (1) to summarize existing conservation practices as related to the most beneficial utilization of deposits of sand and gravel; (2) to identify the conflicting positions of the aggregate producer, the mineral owner, nearby residents, and local government officials responsible for determining land status and for issuing operating permits; and (3) to show the need for planning in Denver and in other expanding communities toward obtaining the benefits of conservation of our rapidly dwindling mineral resources. In order to determine the effects of urbanization on the Denver aggregate industry, interviews were held with owners of sand and gravel operations, with producers of concrete and bituminous pavement, with city and county planning and zoning personnel, and with representatives of various interested organizations. The conservation and ultimate utilization of deposits of construction raw materials near expanding urban areas can best be accomplished by long-range land-use projection and the requesite cooperation of technically advised planning and zoning administrators, government officials, mineral producers, and land developers.

The great demand for metallic aluminum for the prosecution of World War II caused the consumption of bauxite, the common ore of aluminum, to increase greatly. Prior to the war, the domestic deposits 'of bauxite, which occur chiefly in Arkansas and less extensively in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, supplied only: about 30 ,percent of the ore required for aluminum-metal production and approximately 40 percent of alumina for all purposes. Enemy activities during the war seriously interfered with shipment of bauxite from the normal peacetime source in Surinam, Netherlands Guiana, South America, and focused attention on the necessity for increasing production from known domestic deposits. Even in peacetime, the production of aluminum ore in the United States could not satisfy requirements. Field drilling and exploration by Bureau of Mines engineers resulted in the discovery of important tonnages of high-grade bauxite suitable for treatment by the conventional Bayer process, Although an ore containing approximately 55 percent Al2O3 and only 2 to 4 percent SiO2 is preferable, it was necessary to use ores containing up to 8 or 10 percent SiO2. Because of the lower recoveries of aluminum with increased silica content, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, through the Metals Reserve Company, established a base price of $4 for a 50-percent Al2O3 ore, containing 13-percent silica, with a premium or penalty of 14 cents for each percent of Al2O3 over or under 50; each percent of SiO2 under 13 was awarded a 20-cent premium, and each percent over 13 suffered a penalty of 43 cents; all prices were on the basis of 1 long ton of ore, dry basis.

Occupational exposures to whole-body vibration (WBV) at different frequency domains may differentially affect human comfort and the musculoskeletal system. Under this presumption, a frequency-based weighting scheme has been adapted in many widely accepted standards for WBV measurement. However, there is very little human data showing a direct link between WBV frequency and musculoskeletal disorders. We conducted an epidemiologic study to examine the association between WBV frequency and prevalence of low back pain (LBP) and to identify determinants of specific frequencies associated with LBP in urban taxi drivers. Methods The WBV frequency data were collected from 247 professional drivers (aged 44.6±8.3) who participated in an exposure validation study 1 of the Taxi Drivers’ Health Study (TDHS) in 2000. 2 In accordance with the ISO 2631-1 (1997) methods, we measured the frequency-weighted acceleration over drivers’ seat surface, under conditions representing randomly assigned destinations. We developed a WBV record-replay system at the Liberty Mutual Research Institute (LMRI) in Hopkinton, MA, USA. This system includes two tri-axial accelerometers (PCB Piezotronics, NY, USA), one RD-130T PCM data recorder (TEAC, Tokyo, Japan), and one LMWBV meter 2.0 (LMRI, MA, USA). Only the vertical axis of seat-surface WBV frequency was used in this study. To characterize the WBV frequency curve, we manually identified the presence of any peak within each of the following frequency range: <4, 4-10, 10-20, and >20 Hz. Information about the operating vehicles and driving environment was either collected from the vehicle registration record (manufacturer, year of make, transmission, engine size, etc.) or directly measured (wheel-base length, seat inclination, etc.). Structured interviews were conducted by an occupational physician to gather information on LBP that had led to medical attention or absence from driving in past year. We used multiple logistic regression to estimate the prevalence odds ratio (OR) associated with the presence of each index peak frequency, adjusting for age, body mass index, professional seniority, daily driving hours, seat inclination, and the intensity of predicted root-mean-square WBV exposure in m/sec2. For any revealed WBV frequency that was associated with LBP, we constructed a multiple logistic regression model to identify the personal and vehicle characteristics associated with the presence of WBV peak within the indicated frequency range.

A study was made by the Bureau of Mines to determine if shapes of oxide-glass compositions could be roll-formed at high temperatures, and to find the conditions required for adequate formability. A unit with directly connect&apos; furnaces and heated rolls that allowed forming of most of the compositions developed. Glasses of the feldspar type were chemically unreactive with the alumina grains, and allowed the best roll forming. Optimum forming was attained at temperatures of 1,400° to 1,530° C, with compositions containing 30 or 40 percent feldspar and 60 or 70 percent alumina. Formability was better when compositions contained minus 325-mesh materials, rather than coarser or finer powders. In many cases, roll-formed shapes had physical properties equal to or better than the normally sintered shapes of the same composition.

This section of the Minerals Yearbook reviews the minerals industries of 27 countries: the 12 nations of the European Community (Belgium, Dermark/Greenland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom); 6 of the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (Austria, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Sweden); Malta; the 8 Eastern European economies in transition (Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Yugoslavia); and the U.S.S.R. Western Europe Western Europe [loosely defined to include the 12 nations of the European Community (EC) and the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA)] is the single largest trading area and consumer of raw materials in the world. If Western Europe was at one time an important mining sector, it has now increasingly relegated the role of supplying minerals for its minerals processing industry to the more minerally endowed countries in North and South America, Africa, and Australia. In this regard, Western Europe is the most important determinant of raw materials consumption (and thus, indirectly, raw materials production). Western Europe has significant reserves of industrial minerals but has limited availability of metalliferous raw materials. It, therefore, imports significant quantities of the latter and ranks along with the United States and the U.S.S.R. in the production of refined metals. Nonetheless, there is an inherent tendency to underestimate the importance of Western Europe in the world of minerals, both as a minerals processor and raw materials buyer. The reason for this is that Western Europe is generally thought of on the basis of individual nations rather than as a whole. Viewed in this limited context, the United States, the U.S.S.R., and Japan appear to dominate the world economy. Viewed as one regional area, however, Western Europe includes the fourth (FRG), fifth (France), sixth (United Kingdom) and seventh (Italy) largest economies of the world, all bordering on one another. With the remaining 15 EC and EFTA countries, Western Europe has a land area approximately 40 % of that of the United States, exceeds the U.S. population by 50 % and has a gross domestic product about the same as that of the United States.

A single boom roof bolting machine was outfitted with measurement and recording systems for detecting changes in machine parameters while drilling. The purpose of this instrumented bolter or "smart drill" is to detect changes in roof conditions from the machine parameters of penetration rate, thrust, rotation rate, torque, rejected light from rock cuttings, and vibration of the roof during drilling. The system was demonstrated underground in coal mine conditions and showed correlation between rock type and drilling parameters.

The degree and manner of packing of bulk materials influences all phases of their loading, such as by a front end loader or a dragline, and their mechanics of flow, such as through a binhopper or an ore pass. The most important quantity in analyzing the handling of a bulk material is its shear strength which depends primarily on the same parameters as those that determine the packing state. Some of these are size, size distribution, moisture content, particle shape, particle orientation, and cohesion. The variables that affect the packing state arc vibration, pressure, intensity of deposition, velocity of deposition, and, when the material is confined, container used. The analysis of packing by a number of investigators has been done almost entirely with spherical particles. Most of these studies have dealt with monosized spheres. There is scant information on particles with angular shapes. Since most of the investigations by far have been concerned with ceramics and powder metallurgy, the particle sizes and ranges of size distribution have been small compared to those generally found in mining after fragmentation.

Although during the past 10 years Alabama has attained an enviable position by its coal-mine accident experience and, like most of the other coal-mining States, has made progress in the safer operation of coal mines, there is still room for improvement, which can be realized only by still greater efforts on the part of employees and employers. From 1993, when accidents were first recorded by the Alabama State Mine Inspection Department, to 1934, inclusive, 3,451 men lost their lives in the production of 569,722,676 tons of coal. The primary purpose of this report is to bring to the attention of the mining industry in Alabama end elsewhere statistics of fatal accidents for 1931-34, with the hope that a study of the causes may lead to reduction of similar accidents in the future.

Isometric strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with a voluntary isometric (muscle[s] maintain[s] a constant length) contraction. The key thing to understand about this type of contraction and strength measurement is that no body movement occurs during the measurement period. The tested person&apos;s body angles and posture remain the same throughout the test. Isometric strength has historically been the type most studied and measured. It is probably the easiest to measure and to understand. Some strength researchers feel that isometric strength data may be difficult to apply to some "real life" situations because in most real circumstances people are moving - they are not static. Other researchers counter that it is equally difficult to determine the speed of movement of a person or group of persons doing a job (each moves in his or her unique manner and speed across the links and joints of the body). Thus, dynamic strength test data collected on persons moving at a different speed and/or in a different posture from the "real world" condition will be just as hard to apply. In truth, neither is better - they are different measurements. Both researchers and users should collect and use data that they understand and that fits their application. Workplace Assessment When a worker is called on to perform a physically demanding lifting task, the external load produces moments - tendencies to produce motion, also called torques - about various joints of the body.(1) Often these moments are augmented by the force of gravity acting on the mass of various body segments. For example, in a biceps curl exercise, the moment produced by the forearm flexors must counteract the moment of the weight held in the hands as well as the moment caused by gravity acting on the forearm&apos;s center of mass. To perform the task successfully, the muscles responsible for moving the joint must develop a greater moment than the combined moments of the external load and body segment. It should be clear that, at each joint of the body, there is a limit to the strength that the muscle can produce to move ever-increasing external loads. This concept forms the basis of isometric muscle strength prediction modeling.(1) The following procedures are generally used with this biomechanical analysis technique. First, workers are observed (and usually photographed or video-taped) as they perform physically demanding tasks. For each task the posture of the torso and the extremities are documented at the time of peak exertion. The postures are then re-created using a computerized software package, which calculates the load moments produced at various joints of the body as the task is performed. The values obtained during this analysis are then compared to population norms for isometric strength obtained from a population of industrial workers. This bulletin abstracts and reviews essential details of reports on 59 fires in different coal mines in the United States, describes the circumstances of origin and the methods of controlling or extinguishing the fires, and points out the lessons taught. all, the fires caused great damage to property and killed nearly 400 men. The data have been compiled from the records of the Bureau of Mines, which cover most of the major mine accidents in the United States since 1.908. The names of the mines concerned and of the persons connected with the management of those mines have been omitted in accordance with the usual policy of the bureau. The bureau hopes that this bulletin will be of service to all persons interested in lessening the fire hazard at coal mines and to all who may be called on to fight a mine fire.

The art of treating ores by the chloride volatilization process is still in the experimental stage. The process has not been sufficiently developed along metallurgical lines to warrant a definite statement as to the exact place it will occupy in the industry. The basic theory of the process has received the attention of prominent metallurgists for 20 years, and considerable research and experimental work have been carried on. Much of the experimental work done has never been published; if the accumulated results were made known, they would greatly aid,. the further development of the process. This bulletin aim~ to bring the salient features of the process to the attention of metallurgists for the purpose of furnishing information to and receiving comments from interested parties with the ultimate hope that the process will be a commercial success. If commercially utilized, the process will fill a long-felt want in metallurgy, especially in the treatment of oxidized and semioxidized or" carbonate" ores of copper, lead, and silver. Such ores are difficult to treat by gravity concentration or by flotation: in the former their tendency to slime upon crushing and their being of lower specific gravity than the sulphide minerals cause serious losses; in the latter much has been done in sulphidizing oxidized ores and subsequently recovering the artificial sulphides by flotation. Difficulties in proper sulphidizing and the low recoveries obtained have not balanced the cost of the treatment in many plants and in very few has it proved successful. Evidently there is a big void to fill in the treatment of these ores. No radical changes in present methods are forecast, but it is obvious that chloride volatilization can have a distinct place as a method of treatment for ores that are not readily amenable to present methods. In many plants it might replace concentration methods, especially where part of the mineral content in the ores exists in forms other than sulphides.

"INTRODUCTION The Treasure Hill mines, situated in Dry Canyon, Ophir mining district, Tooele County, Utah, together with several other properties in the district, examined were examined by Frank L. Wideman, an engineer, the Bureau of Mines, in September 1942.In April 1945, development drilling was started on the Treasure Hill mines, which are operated under lease from the Madison Mines Co. As part of the Bureau&apos;s intensive investigation of domestic manganese deposits, lots of ore for testing were collected by Bureau engineers during examinations of several properties in Juab County, Utah. One low-grade and two intermediate-grade samples (13.5, 25.3 and 27.5 percent manganese) were procured by engineers of the Bureau of Mines from the 900--and 1,100-foot levels of&apos; the Tintic Standard mine, situated 2 miles southeast of Eureka, Utah. The ore bodies were described as blocks of ore approximately 60 feet long, 40 feet wide, and 20 to 100 feet deep. The manganese-iron association in the Tintic Standard ores was intimate, and no significant concentration of the low-grade sample was made by ore dressing, However, both of&apos; the higher-grade samples were readily beneficiated to marketable manganese products. Ore from the Oxen No. 5974 claim, 2 miles northeast of Eureka, Utah was low in grade (19.4 percent manganese) and was not amenable to the production of high-grade concentrates owing to the intimacy of association of the manganese minerals with silica. However, a fair manganese recovery was obtained in a product that, when sintered, assayed plus 40 percent manganese. The ore body is reported to be a replacement in limestone and is composed of manganese oxides intermixed with silica, decomposed rhyolite, and limestone. The Fields property consists of five mineral claims situated 3 miles north of Eureka, Utah. The deposit is a replacement in a contact between limestone and a quartz dike. Tests were made on representative samples of a 50-ton lot stored on the property. Although the mineral association in the ore (22.2 percent manganese) is not particularly complex, the physical properties of the manganese minerals render the ore refractory to ore-dressing beneficiation. As the ores varied widely in physical and chemical characteristics, samples from each property were considered as separate ore-dressing problems.

ONE OF THE many services rendered by the Federal Bureau of Mines is the identification and general examination of ore and mineral samples. Many of these, coming from almost every State in the Union, are clay and shale samples. Other Government agencies, State geologists, universities, and other laboratories are often requested to make similar examinations. This publication describes methods of testing these samples. An earlier paper, published in 1943, described Bureau of Mines methods of testing such clays.3 This paper was to be followed later with another (part II) that would describe much more thorough testing than did the rather general outline of part I. Part I has been out of print for some time and needs revision, and part II was never written; hence, the present publication is designed to include part I and also those additions intended as part II. The tests presented in part I were simple, requiring only the ordinary equipment to be found in any good chemical laboratory. The second publication was to include a greater number of test procedures and information on increasing the accuracy and precision of those previously given.
