"The Northconnex Project is a twin nine kilometre tunnel in Sydney, Australia, linking the M1 PacificMotorway at Wahroonga to the Hills M2 Motorway at West Pennant Hills. Access to the tunnels will befrom portals at either end and from three vertical shafts spaced along the length of the motorway. These shafts will provide access for equipment, plant and personnel, removal of spoil during construction,ventilation, and emergency egress points during tunnel operation. The three shafts have a 12 m x 16 m (39 ft – 53 ft) cross sectional area and depths ranging from 45 m to 91 m (148 ft – 299 ft). The vibration limit for the shaft blasting was set at 10 mm/s ppv, with residential properties as close as 31 m (102 ft) and the existing M1 motorway 80 m (262 ft) away. The traffic volume for the M1 is 80,000 vehicles per day and Northconnex will provide an additional 100,000 vehicle capacity. "

Nevis Bluff Landslide - On September 17” 2000, a rockfall measuring lO,OOOm3 at Nevis Bluff, New Zealand, triggered a loday emergency. It ended when a hazardous column of rock that towered over State Highway 6 was finally shattered. The operation called for unusual and unique solutions using aerial bombing and inverted blasting techniques, not known to have been attempted before under these conditions, anywhere in the world.

This paper discusses the challenges encountered in drilling and blasting of a small diameter shaft underneath a parking garage in historic Gastown, Vancouver, BC. This project involved drilling in a restricted headroom area, blasting in a confined space environment, and excavating using a novel vacuum technique. The 1.2m x 1.2 m x 8.5m deep shaft was required for installation of a hydraulic piston for a show lift. The project called for very accurate drilling through inter-bedded sandstone and siltstone within the water table. Development of a unique blast design was required for blast vibration control on a historic structure located just 15.8 meters away. The shaft was successfully completed without damage to any of the surrounding structures.

The paper details the preliminary design utilising both detonating cord only and specialised presplit product charges and compares these to the final designs utilised based on site experience. Managing blasting-induced air overpressure levels is a key compliance requirement for most blasting operations. Regression analysis, plotting overpressure amplitude vs cube root scaled distance, will often present a level of scatter which should be considered unacceptable. Relying solely on regression-based predictions can lead to overly conservative restrictions that may negatively impact other key performance indicators. Improved methods are needed for accurate overpressure prediction. The Heelan-Blair wavelet has been shown to closely resemble the overpressure waveshape produced when a single charge is fired under typical confinement conditions. The amplitude of a single-hole overpressure wave is influenced by factors such as proximity to the receiver, charge mass, orientation, and confinement both at the collar and face. Additional factors, including timing sequence, barrier effects, wind direction and velocity, must also be considered. The linear superposition method, commonly applied for ground vibration prediction, can be adapted for air overpressure modelling. In blast design software, this approach can consider all relevant parameters and environmental interactions. Given the uniform nature of air compared to rock, linear superposition using realistic elemental wavelets may replace the need to fire a signature hole. Data from 38 single-hole blasts conducted at quarries and mines throughout North America were used to develop and calibrate a linear superposition model. This model reasonably reproduces air overpressure results from full-scale production blasts, offering a practical approach to overpressure compliance and prediction.

It has long been common practice to conduct drilling and blasting operations at surface quarries in the Midwest in close proximity to near-vertical highwalls. The main reasons for such an approach, and the limited use of adequate safety controls, can be associated with higher costs, operational constraints, lithological requirements, property boundary restrictions, inadequate quarry planning, or a lack of understanding of highwall risks. Working in proximity to highwalls, without effective controls, exposes personnel and equipment to increased risk of incidents. In recent history, there have been isolated incidents involving equipment damage, or personnel injury/fatality around the United States. However, the Midwest market has largely escaped the effects of such incidents, even though the exposure rate is high. Awareness about this matter greatly increased on January 19th, 2021, when a significant incident occurred at a quarry near Green Bay, Wisconsin. As a crew was loading a typical blast near a highwall, a ground fall occurred, and multiple rock fragments struck a laborer working on the bench below. This individual sustained significant and life-altering injuries.

The environmental problems such as vibration, and air blast are often faced, and discussed on mining, quarrying, civil constructions, shaft-tunnel, pipeline, and dam operations where blasting is inevitable. It is necessary to establish national standards towards to minimize the environmental problems induced by blasting and judicial matters in our country as it is in USA, EU countries and the other developed countries. This necessity and the obligatory of accepting the European Union criteria for Turkey that has started the procedure of joining to EU emphasize the importance of this study. In other words, the establishment of a particular national standard related with this subject is inevitable for Turkey. This will be possible only by studying, applying scientific methods and techniques by the experts.

Proper management of exclusion zones in blasting operations is essential to ensure safety without compromising operational efficiency. In Peru, mining regulations establish minimum exclusion distances specifically for personnel (500-meter radius / 1,640 feet), but do not define clear technical criteria for equipment. As a result, conservative distances such as 200 meters (656 feet) are often applied, negatively impacting productivity. This study proposes a technical-scientific methodology to reduce equipment exclusion zones, based on the use of advanced technologies such as drones, high-resolution cameras, and specialized software tools. The solutions used allow video recordings of blasts to be transformed into dynamic data through artificial intelligence and computer vision, as well as execute probabilistic simulations of the flyrock phenomenon using Monte Carlo algorithms and physical models calibrated to real operating conditions. Technological integration enabled the simulation of real operational scenarios, considering variations in critical blasting parameters that directly affect flyrock generation, such as drill diameter, explosive density, linear charge, and stemming height. Additionally, the Terrock methodology was incorporated, allowing the behavior of the rock mass to be included as a variable in risk assessment, improving analysis accuracy under different rock hardness conditions. The methodology was applied in four phases: diagnosis of the current design (15 blasts), modeling, validation of the calibrated model (6 blasts), and subsequent operational implementation. As a result, it was determined that the exclusion radius can be safely reduced from 656 to 492 feet (200 to 150 meters), maintaining as the main restriction the use of stemming lengths greater than 5.0 m. This optimization has the potential to generate tangible benefits, with estimated monthly savings exceeding USD 50,000, associated with reduced evacuation times, lower fuel consumption, less equipment wear, and increased productivity in drilling and hauling activities. The comprehensive approach presented here highlights the transformative potential of digital technologies applied to blast management, contributing to safer and more efficient mining operations.

The combination of chemical analysis techniques as XRF and measurement-while-drilling (MWD) technology in underground mining is a novel approach to gather comprehensive on-line information about physical and mineralogical data. In this work their integration is investigated aiming to delineate the ore/waste boundary. The input data analyzed come from a narrow vein underground mine, where the ore correspond to fluorite, and gathered in two production levels with complex mineralogical characteristics. Two approaches are followed to build a generalizable classification methodology and a site-specific model: a k-means clustering heuristic algorithm to define rock classes based on their physicochemical features, and a machine learning (ML) ensemble model trained with drilling parameters. For an imbalance class problem, a good recognition is obtained for the ore when is related to a high content of silica and for the waste. To predict the ore with low silica content it is necessary to integrate an analysis-while-drilling method to recognize the fluorite content when this mineral is embedded in different rocks. MWD can be employing for the lithologies recognition when representing different structural and mechanical properties between them.

When we look out on our business landscape today, the words higher, faster, fdwther come to mind. Compliance issues, business integration, increasing production and profitability demands are converging in an age old industry and giving it a new twist. Not that the rock changes, rather that as the variables of our business change, the resulting “cut-off grade in business” turns ore into rock or rock into ore. The trick is to emphasize the latter. As with the miners of yore, what was recovered from the business enterprise had a lot to do with tools and skill. So it is today. When the casual observer looks at drilling and blasting operations today, many see the same basic offering in terms of equipment types and process. Looks, however, can be deceiving. As with the aviation sector, a given machine might took similar to previous generations of equipment, but in fact is radically different in terms of power, efficiency, accuracy, and range. So it is with hydraulic top-hammer drills today.

Poorly fragmented and tight muck piles, caused by insufficientdisplacement of the broken rock, lead to higher digging and hauling costs. Therefore muck pile must be tailored to suit the loading and hauling equipment. In order to achieve this objective, it is imperative to understand the relevant muck pile characteristics and factors governing them. ALFRED NOBEL was born at Stockholm on October 21st. 1833, and died on December 10th, 1896. Although Sobrero’s discovery of nitroglycerin dated back to 1847, this explosive was manufactured on a commercial scale for the first time in 1862, by Nobel at a factory which he erected at Heleneborg, near Stockholm. These works were entirely wrecked by an explosion in 1864. In 1865, he erected works, which are still in existence, at Winterviken, near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel introduced modifications in the manufacture of nitroglycerin which were the subject of a patent (see footnote No. 1), and at the same time, claimed a process for the detonation of nitroglycerin. Nobel states that, up to that time, the method used for the manufacture of nitroglycerin consisted in pouring glycerin, drop by drop, into a mixture of sulphuric acid and nitric acid contained in a refrigerating mixture. In order that the nitroglycerin should not be decomposed, the temperature was not allowed to rise above 0° C.

The following is a case study of how LuckStone Corporation improved their blast monitoring and documentation program. A number of resources already at their disposal have been utilized to improve the body of data collected from each blast. The tools being used include GPS, aerial photos, and a user-friendly push button format excel spreadsheet. The data collected include product by product records of materials used, distances to all concerned neighbors, seismograph data, etc: The spreadsheet has been designed to perform an ongoing analysis of blasting trends. The program has been carried out at a corporate level and is in use by blasters at each location. This paper addresses the advantages and drawbacks of this program. It also addresses the ways in which the various tools were integrated, Discussed as well is the need for simplicity when bringing “new” technology to the field and the steps taken in familiarizing the end user to changes.
