Various factors that control the natural flotability of talc, including differences due to crystal face and edge effects, were delineated. For study of talc depression phenomena, dextrin was used as a model depressant. For the enhancement of talc flotation, dodecylammonium acetate (DDAA) was used as the collector. The interaction of DDAA with talc was assessed by flotation experiments and electrokinetic (zeta potential) measurements, from which the role of hydrophobic bonding can be demonstrated. The results presented in this paper provide useful information on how the crystal chemistry and surface chemistry control the electrical double layer, adsorption phenomena, wettability, and flotation behavior of talc in aqueous media.

The velocity of gas passing through a flotation cell can be estimated by collecting bubbles by natural buoyancy in a closed tube and measuring the rate of pressure increase. The governing equation is derived and verified. Single- and two-tube gas velocity sensors are described. The latter design permits a correction for bulk density and level change during signal collection.

Gole - Gohar Iron ore mines located in Sirjan, Southeast of Iran, have more than 1 billion Iron ore deposit and this area comprises 45 % of Iran Iron reservoirs. The aim of Wet tailing processing line is recovering Hematite ore from wet tailing of Gole - Gohar iron ore processing plant. The Investigations of Hematite recovery plant showed that the recovery of Iron ore to concentrate in Wet Tailing Processing (WTP) line is very lower than that has been predicted, sampling, and designing of the process parameters are not accurate and designed magnetic field intensity is not reasonable for the recovery of Iron in form of Hematite in this line feed. Applying of MIMS in WTP separator and changes in circuit caused in overwhelming increase of Fe recovery, from 11 to 40%. Although recovery of WTP line was improved, but low recovery of this processing line and high content of Hematite ore in WTP tailing, made applying Wet High Intensity Magnetic separators unavoidable. Two kinds of WHIMS have tested for processing of WTP line tailing. Results showed that traditional Jones separator with grooved plate matrix, is more suitable to achieve a better quality of concentrate compared to Slon® separator.

The aim of this work is to compare three different results of charge motion in a modified 5ft diameter lab mill and to identify differences and similarities in these results. The lab mill is modified from tumbling a ball charge to tumbling a charge of disks. This modification replicates 2D motion. This 2D condition is measured using an instrumented disk (iDisk) and analysed using a video imaging system. The iDisk is equipped with a 3D accelerometer array and rotation rate sensors. With the help of a video system, some measured quantities are also determined externally. The results of these three predictions or measurements are presented. A discussion is included.

Mining operations offer many opportunities for the use of IT and communication technologies to improve automation and thereby deliver higher levels of productivity, cost, quality and safety. In this paper, we discuss a particular application, namely, building a fully automated train control and operation system within a mining area. We first outline the basic architecture and functionality of such a system and then present a real-life case study where the railway system within a remote iron ore mine in Canada was converted to a fully automated train operation system. This hard real-time safety-critical system required the use of advanced technologies such as embedded systems (e.g., on-board train controller), radio communications, formal methods, optimal scheduling, and extensive simulations. We focus on the design aspects for maintaining the system in safe states.

A drop weight tester (DWT) is designed and fabricated for the purpose of analyzing single particle impact breakage characteristics of different ores. The test results were evaluated through the breakage distributions of different size fractions at five different input energy levels. The breakage parameter, t10 (Narayanan, 1986) is used to represent the degree of size reduction, which is assumed to be representative of the breakage product size distribution obtained from single particle breakage. Representation of breakage distribution with this method consist one more breakage dependent parameter (a). To evaluate the impact breakage characteristic of different ores, a mathematical relationship was established to analyze the dependency of breakage parameters, t10 and a on specific input energy (EIS) or fracture energy (Tavares et al, 1998, Fandrich, 1998), specimen size (?) and Bond?s operating work index (WI0). Mathematical results developed gives adequate model for all ball mill modeling. It can be concluded that the drop weight test method is a useful and practical way of evaluating the impact strengths of various ores and results of which can be used in modeling mills.

Indian National Steel Policy envisages ambitious three fold rise in steel production by the year 2020. This paper covers the iron ore industry in India which cater to the need of iron ore requirement of Indian iron and steel sector as well as export commitment in addition to addressing the industry?s key concern to attain the same. The main contents are (i) resources and its exploitation; covering status of exploration, reserves and resources, province wise occurrences, distribution, nature of mineralization and generation of fines, etc ; (ii) use of iron ore in iron and steel making, covering physical and chemical requirements for pig iron and sponge iron production; (iii) ore characteristics and beneficiation practice in vogue; (iv) projected steel demand and requirement of quality iron ore and provision thereof; (v) recovery of iron values from in situ low-grade ores and stacked fine rejects (-10/-6 mm) inclusive of slimes (-0.15 mm) from tailing ponds; (vi) agglomeration of fine concentrates preferably by pelletization; (vii) measures to augment iron ore availability for future requirements.

The consumption of aggregates in civil construction has increased considerably in Brazil for the last years. The extraction of sand and gravel generates significant environmental impacts. As the quarries and sand deposits are getting exhausted near the big cities, the price of aggregates is increasing. Meanwhile, the extraction of quartzite (dimensional stone) in the state of Minas Gerais has been done mostly in small quarries, with very low recovery, generating approximately six million tons of wastes a year, which causes pollution, increases final prices of products, decreases the life time of quarries and ends up in the closure of enterprises. The government agencies and the quarries’ owners understand that only by finding applications to wastes there will be development to the sector. The aim of this investigation was to study the application to the quartzite wastes as aggregate in the civil construction. Samples of quartzite wastes collected in a quarry were characterized by petrographic analyses. Laboratory tests of crushing and grinding were done to analyze the viability of reducing the size of coarse material to a finer one to be used as raw material in industrialized mortars and concrete pre-molded components.

A robust theory of sedimentation-consolidation evolved and was accepted by researchers worldwide in the last two decades of the 20th century. This theory provides a reliable method of thickener design, simulation and control. However, a process model, simple or sophisticated, empirical or phenomenological, is useful only if it is possible to determine, in an objective way, its experimental parameters. Although it is important for a mineral processing plant to perform periodical laboratory test to determine thickening parameters, and in this way adjust the operation, not always these tests represent the behavior of the material in the process. It is important to be able to determine these parameters directly in the thickeners. Research workers at the University of Concepción developed new instrumentation, algorithms and software for the determination of thickening parameters. In this paper, two new instruments for the on-line determination of the settling velocity and the compressibility of the sediment are presented and results of tests in a major mineral processing plant in Chile are described.

"Froth flotation is an exceedingly complex physicochemical process. The convenience of distilling much of the complexity of the bubble-particle interactions into a single parameter has led to the continuing popularity of the classical ‘induction time’ to quantify the threshold for bubble-particle attachment to occur. Despite this popularity and the simplicity of the concept, there is no single universal method of evaluating the induction period. In this paper, we begin with a critical review of the available techniques for estimating the induction period. These are: back-calculation from experimental (micro) flotation tests; pushing a particle toward a stationary bubble (or vice versa) using an atomic force microscope (AFM); pushing a bubble toward a stationary bed of particles in the ‘Induction Timer’; pushing a bubble toward a stationary solid surface using the ‘integrated thin film drainage apparatus’ (ITFDA); and dropping particles onto a submerged stationary bubble using the ‘Milli-Timer’ device. Each one of these methods has advantages and disadvantages, and the best choice depends on the application. In the experimental section, we present quantitative comparison of the induction periods estimated using two different techniques, namely the Induction Timer and the Milli-Timer. The same particles were tested in each device, under the same conditions. It was found that by tuning the operation of the particle pick-up device, similar estimates of induction period could be obtained to the estimates made by direct observation with the Milli-Timer. In the former device a bubble is driven toward a particle bed at a controlled rate, whereas in the latter a particle’s motion is governed by the hydrodynamics. The potential to match these presents an intriguing prospect for better understanding the bubble-particle interaction, and the possibility to ‘calibrate’ the simpler Induction Timer against direct observations."

Electrostatic separation is a dry separation technique usable for many applications in the mining- and recycling industries. At the Chair of Mineral Processing intensified research has been done on this topic during the last years. One challenge was to measure the triboelectric charging of fine mineral particles in a triboelectric charging device consisting of an electrically insulated polyethylene rotor/stator assembly. These tests, performed on monomineralic samples, were accomplished in a climate chamber. It was shown that charging of minerals not only depends on rotor speed, feed rate and atmospheric circumstances but also on the properties of the applied electrostatic field. Tests on pure calcite in contact with the polyethylene rotor/stator system resulted in specific triboelectric charges up to +10 nC/g at low relative humidity. With more water present in the surrounding atmosphere, these charging values decreased significantly. However, at higher relative humidity, triboelectric charge values could be maintained after an electrostatic field of positive polarity was applied. Similarly, charging behavior was found with other hydrophilic minerals. The idea behind all these tests was to find the largest charging difference between minerals occurring together in a deposit and to be able to charge them oppositely, assuming that this means good sort ability in an electrostatic separator. The results gained from these investigations are shown. After having obtained many results on charging pure minerals, it became interesting to test the applicability of the charging tendencies on electrostatic separation of fines <100 µm. In order to do so, a separator for fine polymineralic powders was developed, constructed and combined with the triboelectric charging device, all being set up in a climate chamber. This new so-called coax-separator is presented along with first test-results.

"The study is focused on investigating the production of synthetic rutile of 95% purity or higher from a Norwegian ilmenite ore concentrate. This was to be achieved using a sequential process involving oxidative-reductive roasting at 975°C, followed by magnetic separation to further concentrate the sample and finally leaching with 20% HCl to remove mostly Fe-based impurities leaving behind synthetic rutile. The key process parameters considered were roasting time (1 and 2 hrs), leaching temperature (100, 125 and 145°C), pulp density (15 and 25wt%) and leaching time (3 and 6 hrs). The option of directly leaching the concentrate without pre-treatment was also evaluated. Test work was conducted using samples screened to a size fraction of 105-212 µm. Samples were leached in a 1 L glass autoclave. The reactor was hermetically sealed and thus the resulting pressure was not controlled but was dependent on the process temperature. The product from leaching was calcined and analysed via XRD and SEM to determine the purity of the product. The magnetic separation step was found to be ineffective and discontinued early in the study. Thus far a product with 97% synthetic rutile purity as analysed by SEM has been produced by directly leaching the concentrate at a temperature of 145°C, pulp density of 25wt% and leaching time of 6 hrs.INTRODUCTION The study investigates the use of a process route comprising oxidative-reductive roasting, followed by magnetic separation and then hydrochloric acid leaching and calcination to produce synthetic rutile from ilmenite concentrate. The grade of synthetic rutile produced should be suitable for chlorination to produce pigment grade TiO2. Hence the proposed process should produce a product consisting of no less than 95% synthetic rutile. Additionally, the product should have no more than 1.5wt% combined content of CaO and MgO (Zhang et al., 2011) as they tend to form high-boiling-point chloride leading to the malfunctioning of fluidized bed chlorinator (Cardarelli, 2008). Finally the product should have no more than 2.1wt% of Fe2O3."

"Screening is an important means of size classification used on granular or particulate materials. The vibrating modes of screen separator have a great effect on the screening process. Elliptical vibration mode is a complex motion mode which gets the common characteristics of both linear and circular vibration modes. However, the fundamental motion and screen penetration of the particles on the elliptically vibrating screen deck are still poorly understood. A numerical study of the motion of particulates flow along an elliptically vibrating screen deck is presented by means of a three dimensional Discrete Element Method (3D-DEM). The motion characteristic of the particle flow is analyzed at a particle scale. The effects of vibration amplitude, throwing index, vibration direction angle and screen deck inclination angle on the screening process are discussed. The results show that the particles average velocity increases linearly with the increase of vibration amplitude, throwing index and screen deck inclination angle, but decreases linearly with the increase of vibration direction angle. The screening efficiency is highest when the vibration amplitude, throwing index, vibration direction angle and screen deck inclination angle are 4.5 mm, 3.3, 40° and 6°, respectively. This work is helpful for developing a deep understanding of particle motion on the elliptically vibrating screen and for optimizing screen separator designs."

Until recently, in consideration of fundamentals of gravity concentration theory, all computations have been based on determination of particles? fall velocity in an unrestricted medium (hydraulic size). Meanwhile, gravity separation processes are realized under conditions of particles? restricted fall, when important and sometimes decisive role is played by interacting forces of particles, dependent on their varying size, density and shape, i.e., segregation forces. We have developed devices and methods for measuring segregation velocities of fine particles of various size, density and shape during their loosening in air or aqueous medium. Besides, to exclude influence of medium upward flows, loosening was provided by superposition of vertical harmonic oscillations on measuring cell. It was established, that maximum segregation velocities are observed at certain optimal acceleration values and amplitudes of oscillations; excessive loosening leads to mixing and worsening of segregation. Velocity of some particles segregation through others depends on particles? size, density and shape, as well as nature of medium (air, water). Absolute segregation velocities of particles in air medium may reach 1~2 mm/s, in aqueous medium such velocities are by an order smaller. Analysis of rare-metal sands material gravity concentration results showed, that owing to segregation process during gravity separation, fine-size isometric particles of heavy minerals are recovered into gravity concentrates more actively, than larger ones, but more elongated in shape. It is convenient and simple to estimate mineral grains? shape by extent of their oblongness, described as ratio of particle minimal dimension to maximum. Besides, mineral mixtures gravity separation results are directly related to extent of oblongness of heavy particles, recovered in gravity separation process, and also to root-mean-square coefficient of their shape variation. The performed research showed that particles segregation in gravity concentration process plays not a lesser role, than hydrodynamics parameters, and demands further theoretical inquiry and experimental studies.

Dielectrophoresis is a separation technique that uses a non-uniform electrical field to separate particles on the basis of their permittivity. There are many areas of mineral processing that might benefit from the application of dielectrophoresis. These include: coarse removal of gangue, recovery of ultrafine particles, upgrading of flotation concentrates or simply as a laboratory analysis technique. In order to determine the potential value of dielectrophoresis to the mineral processing industry, the response of composite particles was investigated. The electrical properties of composites involve complex relationships between the shape, distribution and permittivity of the individual grains within the rock. The relationship between mineral composition and dielectrophoretic force was measured on single particles from two ore types. The results were used to populate a model that could predict the separation characteristics of the ore. The insights gained from this model separator allowed potential applications of the technology to be examined and their performance evaluated.

Discrete Element Method (DEM) is extensively used to simulate the behaviour of particles in various processing units. This method is based on modelling the forces acting between particles in any contact and consequently calculating the new position of particles. The high number of elements and numerous equations needed have made the required computation time very long even using computers with very fast processors. The required computation time mainly depends on the time step. If the time step is chosen very short, the computation time will significantly increase. On the other hand, if the time step is chosen very long, the simulation will be in error due to not fully observing the contacts. In DEM calculations, the time step is chosen as a fraction of the collision time. In this research, a relationship was proposed between the contact time fraction and the error of simulation. In other words, to select the time step in addition to physical parameters, the accuracy of the simulation was also accommodated in the frequently-used relationships. The simulation error was defined as the relative difference between the initial restitution coefficient and the restitution coefficient obtained after simulation. The required time steps to arrive at the simulation error of 5% were calculated for two common contact force models namely, Hertz-Mindlin and linear spring-dashpot. The simulation was performed for two particles with radius of 3 cm, elasticity modulus of 210 GPa, Poisson&apos;s ratio of 0.3 and relative velocity of 0.5 m/s. The required time steps were found to be 2.3 and 0.19 µs for the Hertz-Mindlin and the linear spring-dashpot contact force models, respectively. Results showed that with a scaling-down the modulus from 210 GPa to 2.1 MPa, the required time steps for the Hertz-Mindlin and the linear spring-dashpot contact force models, with an equal simulation error, increased by 100 and 316 times, respectively.

This paper discusses a new method to increase flotation recovery. As known from literature, fine and coarse particles have different flotation rate constants, hydrodynamic behaviour and require different reagent regimes. The device discussed allows separate processing of finer and coarser slurry by extraction of a third stream, carrying finer slurry, from the flotation cell. By separate treatment of fine and coarse slurry operational conditions and so flotation recovery for both may be optimized more efficiently. Extraction and classification of the third stream is accomplished by low speed centrifugation and Taylor-Couette flow separation. This Dual Outlet Device (DOD) can be installed in a traditional flotation cell without need for equipment replacement. In order to asses different design options for the DOD a transparent laboratory scale model was built. For this scale model Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations using the RANS k-e and LES turbulence models were performed. Essential insight in the dominant flow systems relevant to optimal operation of the DOD was obtained from the CFD simulations and flow visualization tests with the laboratory scale model. Based on these findings a number of configurations were investigated at pilot plant scale in a 5 m3 Outokumpu flotation cell. The results of the pilot plant study show that utilization of the DOD provides a method for in-cell control over particle size distribution in the slurry. Use of the DOD in a flotation cell may enhance flotation recovery and decrease flotation reagent consumption significantly, against marginal investment and operation costs.

"Size and shape are important properties of aggregates formed in engineering processes and natural systems. Measurement of aggregate size or shape is a challenge when the solids concentration is beyond the gel point, ?? > ??g, when the aggregates are in contact and it is difficult to distinguish or segment individual particles in the network. This paper describes the use of a micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) method for the calculation of the aggregate volume fraction, ??, and a characteristic aggregate length, ??a, based on a 3D chord length measurement algorithm. These parameters can be used to quantify changes in aggregate and pore size during a compressive yield stress test to help understand the impact of flocculation and network structure on dewatering. INTRODUCTION In a thickener, flocculation is often used as a pre-treatment step and the final solids content of the underflow depends on the network strength and permeability of the bed formed by settled aggregates (Usher, Spehar, and Scales 2009). This paper describes the measurement and analysis of micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) of flocculated mineral sediments to obtain a characteristic length, ??a, of the aggregate and pore phases during a staged compressive yield stress experiment. This parameter may be used as an indicator of changes in aggregate and pore size to quantify material behaviour in solid-liquid separation processes that depend on self-weight compression or applied pressure. This analysis was carried out to help understand the effect of flocculation on aggregate structure and the thickening process as part of a broader research on the improved solid liquid separation of tailings produced in the oil sands industry.Aggregate properties The solids phase of an aggregated or flocculated suspension will eventually settle – if left undisturbed – under the influence of gravity. Experiments have been conducted at around 1700°C to determine the possibility of carbothermic reduction of alumina under the presence of a metallic solvent. Total pressure of the system was reduced to around 30kPa and metallic nickel, iron, copper and tin were selected as the solvent. The highest recovery of aluminium was achieved with the nickel solvent followed by iron, copper and tin. This ranking for the first three was also in accord with the extent of negative deviation form ideality in the respective binary solutions of these solvents with aluminium. The tin-aluminium system displays positive deviation form ideality. The rate and extent of reduction was found to be highly dependent on temperature and pressure. The pseudo first order reaction rate was found to be applicable to the process in all the solvents used. Rate constants were calculated and it is also suggested that the reduction was controlled primarily by the chemical reaction rate.

Flotation practice usually uses the Sheridan-Grizvold selection method, where zinc minerals are activated by addition of copper sulphate and depressed by addition of sodium cyanide, ferrous sulphate, zinc sulphate or various mixtures of these reagents. The method is suitable for the flotation of sulphide ores, which, do not bear precious metals, such as silver and gold. When classical technology with cyanide is applied to depress zinc minerals, the precious metals, which are contained mainly into lead minerals, are dissolved into the solution, which represents a technological loss. In order to avoid this process, we have made use from the knowledge on the semiconducting properties of lead and zinc sulphide minerals. We have changed the surface charge of minerals by means of an electrochemical impact realized by direct current application and specially designed set of insoluble or semi-soluble electrodes. Thus, flotation separation of lead and zinc sulphide minerals was achieved, at increased recovery of lead, zinc and silver. The technology proposed was implemented in a Bulgarian flotation factory; it worked over 5 years providing significant, positive economic, technological and environmental impact. Silver recovery was increased by 0.8-1.0 %, and lead and zinc recovery was increased by 0.8-1.0 %. The technology is easily controllable and adaptable to raw materials and parameters of the technological process. It can be paid back for 6-8 months after the implementation.
