The successful application of color sorting machines has established sensor-based sorting in the mineral industry in recent years and is considered today as a significant innovation in processing technology. However, we are only at the beginning of (market) introduction. New sensor systems have been developed, which exploit material properties such as electrical conductivity, magnetization, molecular structure, thermal conductivity etc. This opens up new exciting preconcentration and upgrading possibilities for many applications such as nickel, gold, copper and other ores as well as for industrial minerals, diamonds and other gem stones.

"A gravity concentration process has been applied to ores from the Clogau Mine, north Wales, the Tyndrum deposit, central Scotland and an alluvial ore from Leadhills area of Scotland. In the case of the Welsh ore and the alluvial deposit the gold grains in the concentrate and tailings streams have been characterised in terms of their three dimensions.In the case of Welsh ore, the thickness of a gold grain has been shown to be the single most important factor in determining behaviour in a gravity concentration operation. Six indices were used to quantify the overall geometry of the gold grains and those which incorporate a thickness term have proven to be effective in predicting the destination of gold particles within the concentration circuit. It is proposed that the most simple of these, the Heywoods flakiness ratio, has potential for the control of milling operations as an alternative to the established practice of characterising the size of the mill discharge.The effect of grain geometry on the recovery of fine gold has been studied using Tyndrum ore. The recovery of gold by gravity concentration increased from 20% to 70% when the criteria used to design the milling operation was the prevention of over grinding of gold grains.The destination of alluvial grains in the concentration circuit did not show such dependence on shape, and this has been attributed to the effective classification of all the gold grains in the sample by fluvial action producing a population of similar geometric characteristics."

"The Eustis mine, which was discovered in 1865, lies about 6 miles southwest of the city of Sherbrooke, Quebec, in lots 2, 3, and 4, range 9, Ascot tp. The mine was operated almost continuously from 1865 to 1937, under vanous owners.The ore was pyrite with varying amounts of chalcopyrite, a small amount of zinc blende and galena, and a low content in gold and silver. Parts of it ran quite high in copper, but the mine average would probably have been between 3 and 4 per cent. The high percentage of pyrite made it profitable to separate the ore into a copper concentrate and a pyrite concentrate. The latter was shipped away for manufacturing sulphuric acid, or was treated in a plant erected in 1887 at Capelton by the Nichols Chemical Company.The ore is a replacement of mica schist, which in turn was formed by the shearing of rhyolite flows. Ore also replaces the 'green rock', a term locally applied to carbonatized mica schists. The ore contained numerous 'horses' and smaller fragments of country rock, in all stages of replacement, ranging from those whose character was quite distinct to those whose ancestry could only be detected by an indefinite banding preserved in the sulphides."

The use of sidewall copper cooling systems to prolong furnace campaign life is becoming an accepted technology solution in the base metals industry. Tenova Pyromet has designed and installed a number of sidewall copper cooling systems in base metals furnaces, including the platinum industry. Apart from increasing the furnace campaign life through the formation of a stable freeze lining, a well-designed copper cooling system enables the plant operator to focus more on optimizing the process to achieve throughput and recovery targets, and to accommodate more varied and available concentrate feed blends. The paper discusses the design of sidewall copper cooling systems for copper smelting and converting furnaces to achieve the above objectives. More specifically, the design of copper cooling systems for top submerged lance furnaces are discussed. An overall increase in furnace heat losses has been raised as a concern for intensively cooled sidewalls. The paper explores the overall heat loss expectations for copper cooled furnaces versus traditional refractory lined furnaces. In addition, the potential use of alternative cooling media is discussed. INTRODUCTION Base metal smelting and converting furnace technologies have been evolving continuously over the past century to satisfy the need for higher throughput, improved efficiency, and longer campaign life. To accommodate these demands, in particular higher smelting intensity and throughput, furnace bath containment systems had to improve. The use of pure refractory lining systems has slowly made room for the use of more intensively cooled lining systems (Joubert, Nikolic, Bakker & Mc Dougall, 2016). These cooling systems evolved from external shell cooling, such as shower or film cooling, to copper plate coolers extending into the furnace refractory lining, and high intensity stave or panel coolers (Verscheure, Kyllo, Filzwieser, Blanpain & Wollants, 2006). Consequently, an increasing number of base metal smelting and converting furnaces are equipped with copper cooling systems, including flash furnaces (Bryk, Ryselin, Honkasalo, & Malmstrom, 1958; Yasuda, Motomura & Kawasaki, 2014; Marx, Shapiro & Henning, 2010), top submerged lance primary smelting and fuming furnaces (Bhappu, Larson & Tunis, 1994; Kim, Lee & Lee, 2000; MacRae & Steinborn, 2018), top submerged lance converting furnaces (Viviers & Hines, 2005; Nikolic, Hogg & Voigt, 2018), primary platinum smelting electric furnaces (Nelson, Stober, Ndlovu, De Villiers & Wanblad, 2005; Jones, 2005; Hundermark, De Villiers & Ndlovu, 2006; Mc Dougall, 2013), and electric slag cleaning furnaces (Joubert, Nourse, Masters & Hundermark, 2005).

The measurement of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from primary aluminium production and inventory of these emissions of carbon dioxide and PF Cs have become an important issue for primary aluminium producers. Most global producers have either voluntary emission goals or emissions limits established through national regulatory requirements. International good practices for inventory of these emissions for national governments are established through the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The current good practices, last updated in 2000, are being revised and are expected to be adopted by governments in the spring of 2006. There are a number of changes expected in the guidance that will impact how facilities account for their GHG emissions. This paper describes the changes to the guidance and the implications of these changes for aluminium producers.

Doped SrCoO3.8 was found to be a promising material for use as a cathode component in intermediate temperature SOFCs. In this work, strontium cobaltite ceramics doped with 10 mol% to 90 mol% samarium were synthesized using the glycine nitrate process in order to study the electrical conductivity and thermal expansion at temperatures of up to 800°C. As-synthesized powders were deagglomerated, pressed and sintered at temperatures ranging from 1100-1250°C. The effect of temperature and composition on electrical conductivity and thermal expansion are presented and discussed.

Basic Assumptions about PeopleMost people in an organization, regardless of level, take pride in their work and generally want to do a good job. When performance falls off, there is usually some explanation other than the employee not really caring. People like to know their exact responsibilities and clearly what is expected of them. People like to know where they stand with the boss and would like to be evaluated on what they do and accomplish, rather than on what others think or feel about them. Further, people like to be rewarded for their good results, indeed, to understand what motivates people, we must look at what happens as a result of their actions. Another belief is that supervisors often have a greater influence on the performance of their people than they fully realize. Simply letting people know how important their performance is can have an impact. "This project is the upgrading of a commuter line of approximately 76 km to improve the railway system in Istanbul metropolitan area. Railway tracks have been connected between Asia and Europe through a tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait. The length of these underground structures sums up 13.6 km. In this paper, the observational construction management based on field measurement performed at large scale underground railway station (Sirkeci station) constructed by means of New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is described and the mechanism for generation of ground surface settlement above this station is discussed.Buildings above Sirkeci station are overcrowded. About 60% of the buildings are made of reinforced-concrete (RC) and others are of brick. Based on the investigation into the predicted settlement and inclination, necessary actions such as structural reinforcement and soil improvement have been conducted for dilapidated buildings.Rock mass around Sirkeci station consists of alternative strata of sandstone and mudstone. It is overall soft rock with an elastic modulus of 150 MPa, partly including fractured zones. Overburden is about 30 to 40 m. The thickness of unconsolidated sand layer distributed on the bedrock is about 10 m. As a result of in-situ permeability tests, the coefficient of permeability of the sand layer is about 1.0x10-3 cm/s. Fill layer of about 10 to 25 m in thickness covers the sand layer at the ground surface. The fill layer contains a lot of artificial waste like splinters of wood, brick chips and mortar chips, etc. in addition to gravel, sand, silt and shells. The coefficient of permeability of fill layer is estimated to be 1.0 x10-2 cm/s, which is one-order greater than that of the sand layer. Fill layer consists of ancient city ruins of ages respectively from the Eastern Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire and has a lot of gaps.The underground part of the Sirkeci station was excavated through a ventilation shaft. Ground surface settlement occurred more than predicted. Therefore, back analyses were performed in order to precisely predict the next-step settlement. However, back analyses with elasto-plastic models could not simulate the actual phenomena and hence, an anisotropic-damage-parameter model developed by Sakurai (1999) was adopted for the back analysis. Furthermore, as the excavation of tunnel proceeded, the ground surface settlement exceeded the predicted value again. Based on the monitoring results, it seemed that pore water pressure decreased by the tunnel excavation resulted in the soft rock and soil to be contracted due to the increase in the effective confining pressure. A coupled hydraulic-mechanical analysis was applied to explain the relationship between decreased pore water pressure and ground surface settlement. The settlement due to drainage from tunnel wall was well-estimated in the coupled hydraulic-mechanical analysis.However, further settlement occurred more than predicted again and again. Though it was very difficult to clarify the reason of the large settlement, it was recognized that the unexpected ground surface settlement resulted from the existence of the large gaps in the fill layer that was greatly compressed. The final settlement reached up to 327 mm."

"Newmont Mining Corporation’s Carlin (“Carlin”) operation processes roaster feed through a double rotator, dry grinding mill following secondary crushing. Metso Process Technology & Innovation (“PTI”) was involved in a review of crushing and dry grinding circuit operations in August 2009. A number of opportunities for increased throughput were identified in the PTI study.Extended plant trials were conducted in July 2010 to provide justification for possible circuit modifications and if needed, additional equipment. The trials confirmed that a finer crusher product would reduce the build-up of material ahead of the coarse grinding chamber in the double-rotator. Also revealed were material transport and airflow restrictions in the dry grinding circuit that resulted in a high circulating load.The secondary crushing plant demonstrated it was capable of reducing the amount of +¾” material in the mill feed thus increasing dry grinding throughput. However, wet and sticky feed affected screening efficiency resulting in low utilisation of the existing crusher capacity. The open circuit configuration also made it difficult to control crushing circuit product size.For the dry grinding circuit, changes in grinding media size, transfer grate design and increased airflow were recommended to reduce circulating load issues and increase circuit capacity. This paper summarises the crushing and grinding circuit review, the extended site trials performed by PTI and the improvements in dry grinding operation that resulted from this study."

"Abstract - The Asturian fluorspar district consists of vein and stratiform deposits where mineralization is controlled by a combination of lithological and tectonic factors.It is postulated that these fluorspar deposits have been formed under disequilibrium conditions created during circulation of ascending hydrothermal solutions along faults and other high permeability conduits. Mixing of solutions is inferred from fluid inclusion studies. Cavity filing and replacement processes are very important in localizing the ore deposits and in determining their morphology.Permian volcanic rocks in the area yield a regional positive geochemical anomaly in fluorine implying that Permian vulcanism may be a possible primary source of fluorine.On a regional scale a relationship can be established between some of the ore deposits and important tectonic lineaments. The stratiform deposits preferentially occur within a calcareous-detrital facies located at the margins of basins. These basin margins are related to important synsedimentaryfaults.Fluorite is the only economic mineral in these deposits. Quartz, carbonates, barite and pyrite are comnmon minerals accompanying fluorite. Other minerals that may occasionally be present as minor components are: marcasite, chalcopyrite, fahlore, sphalerite, galena and related supergene minerals."

Copper electrowinning is a complex electrochemical process that involves the production of LME grade copper from copper rich electrolyte. The process involves the deposition of the copper ions onto the cathode from copper rich electrolyte with the production of oxygen bubbles at the anode. Acid mist is produced by these oxygen bubbles bursting at the electrolyte free surface. It is an undesired by-product of the Electrowinning process which unchecked could result in mist generation higher than the recommended time-weight-average exposure limit. Various approaches to alleviate the problem have been adopted by companies, all with varying degrees of success. All of these have been attempts to treat the symptom acid mist rather than the inherent problem, often proving expensive and, in some cases, ineffectual. In this paper, a new method was developed for acid mist quantification based on ‘total acid mist’ capture above the EW cell under well controlled conditions. With the use of sophisticated diagnostic analytical tools and measurement techniques it was possible to study all the operating variables including current density, flow rate, temperature, etc. independently and their effect on bubble size, bubble velocity, gas hold-up as well as acid mist generation and its droplet size. Results show that total acid mist capture increases with an increase in current density but remains more or less constant between 300–500 A m-2. Total acid mist also shows an increase with increasing electrolyte temperature. These findings are substantiated with the aid of bubble size and gas hold-up measurements with the transparent EW cell.

In 2006, the Corus IJmuiden pellet plant produced approximately 4.6 mln tonnes of pellets. Corus IJmuiden is about to increase its pig iron production to 6.4 mln tonne HM per annum. The burden of the Corus IJmuiden blast furnaces consists of approximately 50% high basicity sinter and 50% acid pellets, both produced in-house. To enable an increased iron production, the capacity of the pellet plant needs to be raised to 5.0 mln tonne per annum. The capacity is increased by modifications to the plant layout, which were implemented during the 2006 cold maintenance stop. In addition, the composition of the ore blends is optimised to gain productivity.

The Loch Lamond celestite properties in central Cape Breton Island were mined by Kaiser Celestite Mining Limited from 1970 until 1976. Poor market conditions in J976forced operations to cease. Kaiser holdings included the Lake Enon, MacRae and A mac prospects. A total of about 272,000 tonnes of raw celestite have been mined. Celestite deposits are situated in the Loch Lamond Basin, specifically in Lower Windsor sedimentary rocks. Of the five formations in the Lower Windsor Group, celestite is found in the upper four. Celestite in the Enon Formation occasionally replaces shale that separates stromatolitic dolomite columns; elsewhere in the formation it occurs in association with siltstone and gypsum. Jn the B2 Limestone Formation celestite fills pores or grades between limestone and gypsum. It replaces both limestone and silty limestone conglomerate in the Loch Lamond Formation; this limestone is of unusually high grade (60 to 70% SrSO,J for the area. Evidence indicates that the Uist Formation may hold important celestite reserves. Original celestite mineralization probably resulted from evaporation of seawater on mudflats or 'sabkhas'. Secondary mineralization also may have occurred. Strontium ions could have been leached from pre-existing concentrations and overlying gypsum, moved downdip in groundwater and combined with sulphate rich waters to deposit as celestite in porous B2 limestones.

In today?s environment, the availability of production equipment is a must to increase throughput and profits. For a number of mining organizations around the world, spare parts availability is key to achieving this goal. Fortunately, having less production equipment immobilized by a lack of spare parts does not equate to increases in inventory levels or in carrying costs. Advance operations research has shown a number of avenues to increase equipment availability while reducing total investment in stock. The presentation will explore these avenues by focusing on key inventory management changes that can be implemented by organizations to optimize their service and stocking levels. We have successfully applied our approaches in start-up mining projects, in mature projects and in end of life mining operations. We will illustrate our methodology using examples from our work with > 30 mining sites around the world.

"The Cigar Lake uranium deposit, in the Athabasca area of north Saskatchewan, was discovered in May 1981 by Cogema (Canada) Ltd., as operator of the Waterbury Lake Joint Venture.The deposit, which is devoid of direct surface expression, is located at the unconformity between the Lower Proterozoic (Aphebian) Wollaston Group meta-sediments and the Middle Proterozoic (Helikian) Athabasca sandstone, at a depth of 410 m to 450 m below surface.At the end of 1984, the deposit had been defined by 105 mineralized holes over a length of 1800 m and a width of between 25m and 105m. It has the shape of flat-lying /em 5 m to 30m thick and shows a remarkable longitudinal and lateral continuity from the information obtained to date. A well defined bulge of the unconformity underlies the mineralized zone over its entire length.The deposit appears to be controlled by an east-west trending structure within which a particular rock facies (""augen gneiss'') has developed in the graphitic metapelites of the Wollaston Group. It is surrounded by a strong alteration halo affecting both sandstone and basement, characterized by extensive development of Mg-AI rich clay minerals (illite-chlorite). The mineralization is hosted principally by the Athabasca sandstone, and consists mainly of uraninite and sulfa-arsenides of nickel and cobalt. Numerous geochemical and geophysical surveys have been carried out in the Cigar Lake area, and although no specific geochemical or geophysical anomaly can be directly associated with the mineralized body, there may be locally a good coincidence.However, a combination of several methods proved extremely useful in interpreting the regional geology and defining the drilling targets within the favourable areas.Although the Cigar Lake deposit shows many similarities with several classical deposits of the Athabasca region, it is characterized by the intensity of its alteration processes and the presence of massive, extremely high grade mineralization.At the end of 1984, the global geological reserves estimated by geostatistics on the main mineralized ""pod"" of the deposit amounted to 110,000 metric tonnes of uranium at an average grade of 12.2% U, with a precision of 25% at the 95% confidence level."

The use of geological and grade models has been standard practice in mine design for many years now, with a wide range of software available to create and analyze the models. Although geotechnical parameters are also of vital importance for mine planning, there has been very little in the way of commercially available systems for integrating geotechnical data into the mine planning and design process. Sirovision is a new technology based on digital photography for automated, safe and accurate 3D mapping of geological and geotechnical features in rock faces. Datamine has integrated this capability into its product range so that Sirovision becomes an integral part of day-to-day face mapping, mine geology and geological / geotechnical modeling in both open pit and underground mines. This results in improved fragmentation for loading, hauling and processing, and for open pits local geotechnical conditions can be taken into account to improve slope design and control. This paper describes some of the ways that geotechnical modeling can be used to create more refined and cost effective mine designs and then discusses the role of Sirovision in enabling the raw data required for such modeling to be collected quickly, safely and reliably.

"With the Ontario Ministry of the Environment stipulating that the cumulative concentration of copper, lead, zinc and nickel in mine mill effluent must be no greater than 1.0 milligram per litre, it has become necessary for the mining industry of find some form of treatment for the removal of heavy metals from effluent waters.To comply with these guidelines, it became necessary for Mattabi Mines Ltd., which is situated 50 miles Northeast of Ignace in Northwestern Ontario, to develop a compact, cost effective and technically sound treatment process to remove heavy metals from their tailings overflow. A design committee consisting of mine metallurgists, environmental engineers, a Dutch research and development team and the equipment supplier engineering staff was set up to accomplish this.Using some new and innovative wastewater treatment equipment, the guidelines established by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment can now be met. The sludge produced from the precipitated heavy metals is sent directly to the concentrator, thus eliminating the danger of re-dissolution of the metals in a landfill site, while recovering some of the valuable metals that would otherwise be wasted in a sludge landfill."
