"A multielement (Au, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, c-, Ag, As, Hg, Co, and S) geochemical rock sampling survey was carried out in 1977 in the Munro Township area of Ontario to assess the application of rock geochemistry for gold exploration in the region. Detailed sampling with analysis for gold and arsenic was done in 1986 in the immediate vicinity of the Croesus Mine.Samples of quartz veins and rock formations were taken in regional traverses and in more detail near old showings, prospect pits, and trenches. Quartz, graywacke, carbonate rock, and rhyolite contain the highest concentrations of gold for samples taken away from the old workings. Ultramafic rocks and gabbro have uniformly low gold. Basalt samples have slightly higher geometric means, but individual samples contain high gold concentrations. Multielement highs are mostly in mineralized quartz samples. Gold distribution is independent of other elements in most other rock types. Samples near old showings possess elevated concentrations of gold indicating that prospecting for individual mineral deposits by bedrock sampling is feasible. Concentrations of gold greater than 100 ppb are mostly within 30 m of old workings. Those samples which contain greater than 1000 ppb Au were obtained from quartz veins, basalt, graywacke, and rhyolite.High concentrations of gold were not notably concentrated near the Contact Fault although some anomalous samples came from near and on both sides of the fault. Arsenic concentrations are elevated near the Contact Fault. Detailed sampling near the Croesus Mine suggests that gold was introduced with faulting, alteration and quartz veining. Gold and arsenic have been added to the wallrock in the vicinity of the main veins."

"By 1994, Inco Limited will lower sulphur dioxide emissions from the Copper Cliffsmelter by 60% to 265 000 tonnes/year, primarily through implementing two key process changes. First, new milling technology will permit economic rejection of additonal pyrrhotite prior to smelting. Second, a bulk coppernickel concentrate will be oxygen flash-smelted, thereby eliminating the existing multi-hearth roasters and reverberatory furnaces . All copper will be recovered in the matte separation plant as a nickeliferous chalcocite, and will be oxygen flash-smelted for blister production. This paper outlines the development of the project and describes the process, including the flash furnaces, new sulphuric acid plant and additional oxygen plant.IntroductionInco 's SO2 Abatement Program will lower sulphur dioxide emissions at Sudbury from the current levels of 685 000 tonnes per year to 265 000 tonnes per year by 1994 as required by Ontario' s countdown on acid rain regulations.It is the high tonnage of sulphur mined that creates the magnitude of the SO2 emission problem at Sudbury. At a production rate of 240 million pounds of nickel per year, Inco mines 12 million tonnes of ore. At 10% sulphur it mines 1.2 million tonnes per year of sulphur. If Inco did not fix any of this sulphur it would be emitting 2.4 million tonnes per year of sulphur dioxide-about as much as all other Canadian emissions. Today, however, Inco is already fixing 70% of the SO2 in ore, in several ways : mostly as sulphur in pyrrhotite rejected to tailings in the milling operations; as acid from the roasting of pyrrhotite and some nickel concentrate at the Iron Ore Recovery Plant (lORP) and some as liquid S02 from the copper flash smelting furnace. By fixing 70% of the sulphur the current allowable SO2 emission levels of 685 000 tonnes per year is met. Total sulphuric acid production is currently 450 000 tonnes per year and in fact, the 10RP operation is being continued only to maintain established acid markets.Historically emissions have been reduced from the 2 000 000 tonne per year level to the current level of 685 000 tonnes per year by rejecting pyrrhotite from the smelter feed, and 70% of the SO2 containment problem at Sudbury has already been addressed.While Inco's profits are large at current nickel prices, most people have forgotten that back in 1982 Inco was losing a million dollars a day. Inco did make a dramatic response to this economic stimulus. The Ontario Division increased productivity by 65% and lowered costs to become the lowest cost nickel producer."

Increasingly sophisticated rock mechanic tools are becoming more and more available for today?s ground control specialist. However many problems are still beyond our ability to explicitly calculate or measure. There is often a gap between the ?art? and the ?science? of rock mechanics. This paper focuses more on the ?art?, giving relatively simple examples of underground observations and micro-seismic records to help explain ground control issues. Ground support techniques such as in cycle shotcrete with high pressure water scaling, mesh and bolting, pumpable resin bolts/cablebolting, and yielding bolts with load spreading straps are discussed. The use of primary/secondary type blasthole sequences in moderate to high stress situations is also discussed with several examples of the micro-seismic response to the stoping. Relatively erratic geology with high material strength contrasts is currently being mined with blasthole methods at Nickel Rim South. Although the mine is still in its? ?early? days, over 1 million tonnes has been extracted and some empirical experience is highlighted with potential longer term issues also being discussed.

"The underground operations of Kidd Creek Mines uses an average of 450 U.S. gpm water during regular operations, and discharges an average of 800 U.S. gpm through consecutive staged pumping lifts of 1200f t.Water is used as a flushing medium for the drilling operations and as a dust suppressant for drawpoint mucking. The water retains an average of 5% suspended solids by weight which is removed underground before being pumped to the surface. This paper outlines the treatment of the mine water for the removal of suspended solids which are chemically treated to settle out as a sludge product of 60% solids by weight. This process reduces the sludge handling operation by 50%. The sludge is systematically disposed into the ore passes.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek minesite, located 27 km north of Timmins, Ontario, produces 4.5 million tonne s of copper, lead, zinc and silver ores annually from its No. I and No.2 underground mining operations. Both mines use a sublevel blasthole stoping method of extraction.Water from the underground operation passes through a series of surface settling ponds, where it is treated to remove heavy metal ions from solution. A blend of the pond effluent with fresh water from Kidd Creek, supply the underground with water at an average rate of 450 U.S. gpm. Water flows from the production zones through coarse sumps and into a main pumping station. There are five main pumping stations underground, three in No. I Mine and two in the No.2 Mine.The No. 2 Mine pumping stations are located on the 4800 level and the 3600 level. All water below the 3600 level to the shaft bottom is controlled from the 4800 pumping station. The water from the 4800 pumping section is combined with water from the remaining levels of the No.2 Mine at the 3600 pumping station. Water from the 3600 pumping station is pumped to the 2400 pumping station in No. I Mine.The No. I Mine pumping stations are located on 2800, 2400, and 1200 levels. All water below the 2400 level to the shaft bottom is controlled through the 2800 pumping station. This water is pumped to the 2400 pumping station. The 2400 pumping station also controls the water below 1600level to 2400 level."

The microstructure and texture evolution of low temperature rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy during annealing were investigated. The specimens were rolled at the temperature of 100? at a high rolling speed of 1000m/min with a reduction of 30% in one pass. Annealing was conducted at various temperatures ranging from 200? to 500? for different time. To study the effect of fast speed rolling, the same annealing procedures have been applied for the specimens rolled at a significantly lower speed of 15m/min. The microstructure was characterized by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, while the texture was analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis and electron backscattered diffraction analysis. Texture weakening occurred during annealing at both fast and slow rolling speeds. However, at the same annealing condition, fast rolled specimens always had weaker intensity of basal texture than slow rolled ones.

"A rank-map of Crowsnest coalfield, showing the distribution of the bituminous coal measures and the locations of major structures, has been produced from vitrinite reflectance measurements on over600coal samples. The timing of coalification in relation to these major structures has also been determined.In the west-central portion of the coalfield a complete stratigraphic succession of coal measures which rides on major thrust surf aces is all of high-volatile bituminous rank, but despite the structural discordance no break in rank is discernible across these structures. The thrust faults therefore predate much of the coalification.Three major valleys expose cross sections of the folded coal measures and in each an increase invitrinite reflectance is demonstrable as individual seams are traced from ridge crest to valley floor. Thus, in these sections, a significant amount of coalification post-dates folding. The proportion of this post-folding coalification is found to increase toward the south of the coalfield.A late gravity-fault, exposed along the east crop of the coalfield, places high-volatile coal-bearing successions in contact with low-volatile coal and demonstrably is a reactivated thrust fault. Coalification at this locality occurred between these two different ages of faulting.The variations in rank and the subtleties of the coalification pattern have, together with systematic changes in the maceral composition of coal seams, had a profound effect on coal quality in the coalfield. Coking coals with a variety of properties occur together with some coals that have no caking capacity."

In transitional mineralization, the sill of the underlying variogram is relatively easily estimated, but the estimation of the nugget effect may be more difficult. This study aims to determine for massive copper deposits just how sensitive the estimations of ore reserve, economic copper content, total net value, and ultimate pit limits are to the errors of estimation in the nugget effect of the spherical variogram model. A massive copper deposit which has a log-normal distribution and a spherical variogram was simulated on a rectangular grid using the turning bands method. By using the three dimensional random kriging method, the mean block grades were estimated at four different sampling densities. The ultimate pit-limits were determined by using the two-dimensional dynamic programming algorithm. To calculate the estimation errors, the values obtained by using the actual nugget effect and structured component values were deducted from the estimations obtained using the incorrect nugget effect and structured component values. For isotropic massive copper deposits, it was found that the ratio of the nugget effect to the structured component of the spherical variogram has no significant effect on either the block grades estimated by the kriging method or on the ultimate pit limits.

"The results of a series of model stope pours designed to investigate working pressures on bulkheads during hydraulic pouring of classified tailings backfill are reported. Total bulkhead pressures and fill water pressures were monitored under the condition of a fully saturated backfill. Similitude of the model testing is discussed and equations are developed to estimate bulkhead pressures under prototype conditions. The model results show that good base drainage, combined with a bulkhead setback, can reduce the expected bulkhead pressures to values such that timber or concrete block structures should be capable of supporting a saturated backfill. Introduction Bulkheads are used in underground running operations to block drift openings in order that hydraulically placed sand backfill can be contained in stope pours. Whenever possible, the sand fill is designed to have sufficient percolation rate so that excess hydraulic transport water will gravity drain out through the bulk headed drifts. This avoids costly decanting systems. Early bulkhead design assumed that the bulkhead pressure could be as high as 0h = Hy where H is the fill height and ""y is the saturated unit weight of the fill (Thomas et al., 1979)(1). A typical design pressure for a 50 m fill height would be 1250 kPa giving a design force of 12,500 kN on a bulkhead located in a drift of 10m2 in area . Typical bulkheads were 1 m thick heavily reinforced concrete structures formed and poured into a notched drift. Not only were these expensive structures but the associated problems of inside drainage systems and curing time delays increased production costs. As experience with bulkheads for large bulk pours increased and fill pressure measurements became available [see, for examples, Libby et al., 1975(2), Askey et al., 1978(3)] , 'free drainage' timber and concrete block bulkheads were designed. Substantial savings have been realized using these types of bulkheads but greater engineering design and monitoring of backfill pours is necessary to ensure that backfill pressures do not exceed the bulkhead design pressures.The effective and total stress components of fill pressure, the engineering concepts associated with the 'free drainage' design and some detailed design considerations have been discussed by Smith and Mitchell (1982)(4) . It is important to the safe use of these designs, however, that the basic engineering concepts be demonstrated and communicated to those responsible for the day-to-day backfill operations. This paper describes and explains observations from a series of model studies designed to measure bulkhead pressures in a saturated fill."

"Girth welding operations represent the rate-limiting step in pipeline construction. A joint industry-university program was set up to establish the field welding characteristics of large-diameter, high-strength line pipe.Theoretical work carried out at the University of Waterloo showed that pipe wall thickness and joint misalignment prior to welding has a marked influence on the lifting stresses acting on the root pass of girth welds. Pipe diameter and pipe ovality had negligible effects. Super-position of lifting and residual stress (caused by the fusion welding operation) highlighted regions of the weld bead most susceptible to hydrogen-induced cracking.The field welding characteristics of 1219-mm-diameter, 13.72-mm-wt Grade 483 line pipe were evaluated using a specially designed test rig. The principal test variables were lift height, delay time after root pass deposition, preheat temperature, pipe composition and joint misalignment prior to welding. For any given life, preheat and joint misalignment prior to welding had the most significant effect on cracking tendency.The output of this program has industrial significance and illustrates the beneficial features of university-industry collaboration.IntroductionField welding operations comprise the rate-limiting step during pipeline construction. Crack-free girth welds must be made in a wide range of weather conditions and consequently the field weldability of line pipe compositions directly affects pipeline integrity and construction economics.Pipe-laying practice comprises root bead deposition followed by a skidding operation involving lifting (or lowering) the pipe length onto skid s so that the next pipe length can be aligned prior to welding. Consider pipeline construction using 24.4-m lengths of 1219-mm-diameter , 13.72-mm-wt Grade 483 pipe weighing approximately 10,000 kg. Skidding involves loading a 3-mm-thick root bead by moving the free end of the pipe through vertical distances of up to 700 mm . The likelihood of cracking in these circumstances depends on the inherent crack susceptibility of the pipe composition employed, on the hydrogen content of the deposited weld metal and on how well the joint handles the external stressing caused byskidding."

"The objective of this paper is to describe the potential impact of inter-provincial competition f or new output capacity on the Canadian potash industry. It will be shown that the ramifications of such actions are potentially severe, especially since the potash industry is one of the few non-fuel minerals in which Canada purportedly possesses a significant degree of market power. More specifically, the paper addresses the impact of possible expansions in New Brunswick, Manitoba and, perhaps, Saskatchewan. The findings suggest that such initiatives could result in substantial excess capacity and the dissipation of monopoly rents. In summary, given the market structure of the industry, it is unlikely that the employment and economic effects associated with industry expansion will offset the loss in national welfare attributable to rent dissipation.IntroductionThe objective of this paper is to discuss the potential impact of inter-provincial competition for new output capacity on the Canadian potash industry. The ramifications of such competition are potentially severe: given that the potash industry is one of the few non-fuel minerals in which we purportedly possess a significant degree of market power(1), it is important that sound supply management practices are followed. "Responding to requests by the Canadian mining industry and the mine regulatory authorities, the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) undertook a major research project on evaluation of wire rope testing in 1986. The objectives were to document, analyze, and clarify - in basic operational terms the reasons for ongoing mine shaft wire rope failures that occur despite mandatory non-destructive testing (NDT) with electromagnetic (EM) instruments on a routine basis.The project's investigative scope and depth was unprecedented. It could not have been successfully completed without the wholehearted cooperation of industry, research organizations, and mine-inspectorates at both national and international levels.The project's goals were attained. II was shown that, at present, the problem areas in Canada are oj a human , rather than of a hardware-related nature. Consequently, the principal recommendations are concerned with a more widespread, more uniform and thorough operator training and certification process at industrial and regulatory levels. Secondary suggestions concern areas of hardware-related improvements.In this paper an up-to-date general overview is given of the major project results. A n extensive reference list is also provided of papers that contain all relevant documentation in detail."

The yield strength model developed by Esmaeili, Lloyd and Poole [1] has been adapted to model isothermal aging in Cu-containing AA6xxx alloys, with (a) a moderate and (b) a very low Cu content in the solution-treated, as-quenched, condition, Isothermal calorimetry has been used to analyze the kinetics of precipitation in these alloys, While the kinetic parameters for the low Cu alloy has been derived from the present experiments, the previously determined kinetic parameters for the high Cu alloy AA6111 has been used to model the precipitation kinetics in the moderate Cu alloy. The age hardening responses of both alloys have been well predicted by the model.

It will also consider the reduction of liability through the implementation of management systems and environmental policies in order to ensure due diligence both with respect to corporate responsibility and the responsibility of the individuals within the corporation.IntroductionConsolidated Professor Mines Ltd . and its predecessor have been exploring in northwestern Ontario for about sixty years . During the last twenty years, the company has been interested in developing a gold mine, the Duport Project, on Stevens Island in Shoal Lake . The lake straddles the border between Ontario and Manitoba and is a drinking water supply for Winnipeg and environs.The Duport Project involves the mining of 450 t/day grading an average of 0.35 oz Ault of ore . At the minesite, located on Steven s Island in Shoal Lake, only preliminary processing of the ore will take place, to produce gravity and flotation concentrates for final gold recover y at a mainland plant well removed from the Shoal Lake watershed. No hazardous chemicals will be used at the island site."

"This paper describes the development of a dynamic model for a full- scale (64 tonnes/hr) grinding circuit consisting of an open-circuit rod mill feeding a ball mill operating in closed circuit. The object of constructing such a model is to investigate the static and dynamic behaviour of potential control schemes. Model selection, data processing and parameter estimation are discussed, and static and dynamic results of simulations are presented. Conclusions are drawn with regard to the adequacy of the model for such studies, and likely limitations on control of such circuits.IntroductionThe model developed here is intended to represent the grinding behaviour of the grinding circuit at the Lake Dufault division of Falconbridge Copper Mines Ltd. This circuit has been fully described elsewhere. At the time of the work described, the ball mill discharge was fed to a four-cell flotation bank , the tailings of which are combined with the rod mill discharge in the cyclone feed pump sump. As the emphasis in this study is on grinding behaviour, and as only I per cent of cyclone feed material is removed in these cells, no attempt has been made to include flotation behaviour in the simulation. One effect of the presence of flotation cells in the grinding circuit is, however, to necessitate somewhat finer grinding than might otherwise be needed: this will have effects on mill parameters.The paper is organized as follows. First the selection of models is discussed, paying particular attention to the problem of selecting simple, yet adequate, flow models for the mills. Then data gathering is described. The method of deriving mill model parameters is explained, and the results presented. Mass balancing of cyclone data and the determination of cyclone model parameters are described. The linking of the models into a full simulation is outlined, and sta tic and dynamic results presented. Finally, the results are discussed and conclusions drawn ."

"Careful tax planning and proper attention to the regulations can result in an optimum deduction ""of the 25% federal resource allowance. Introduced in the Income Tax Act in1976, in part to compensate for the disallowance of provincial mining taxes and royalties. the 25% ""resource allowance"" is a permitted deduction in computing taxable income from mining and petroleum. However, the rules relating to the deduction are complex, and the importance of the deduction which can readily exceed 25% of net income- is frequently underestimated. "A study of the techniques to integrally cast copper tubes in copper tuyeres for use in blast furnaces has been carried out. The work has been performed in support of current efforts to produce two-compartment tuyeres having improved water-cooling capacity. A test pattern corresponding to a vertical section of a two-compartment tuyere, and including a cast-in-place copper tube, was used to investigate such variables as tube preparation, tube coolant, pouring temperature, pouring rate and gating design. Successful castings, either with a good metalfurgical bond or good intimate contact between the tube and the casting, were produced, with all combinations of gating system and position of the tube tried. However, the pouring temperature, the pouring rate and the effectiveness of the coolant are interrelated and must be controlled to produce a good metallurgical bond.IntroductionAs part of its contribution to, and in collaboration with, the Copper Casting for the Steel Industry Committee, CANMET has undertaken research into the methods and techniques needed for the integral casting of copper tubes into high-conductivity copper castings.The objective was to produce two-compartment copper blast furnace tuyeres in which the water-cooled nose compartment consists of a copper tube metallurgically bonded to the wall of the high-conductivity copper casting. This design, developed in the UK, has demonstrated a much extended service life with attendant economies; unscheduled shutdown of blast furnaces due to tuyere failure is a significant problem in the steel industry. The Canadian steel industry believes that this design will replace the currently used single-compartment tuyere in blast furnaces within a few years.The technology to produce these tuyeres does not exist in Canada. One of the main features is the inclusion of a smooth-walled cooling channel in the nose, which permits high velocity cooling water to be employed. A second compartment acts as a reservoir backup, should failure in the nose occur. This would allow continued use of the tuyere for a period of time, permitting a scheduled shutdown for repair s. To assist the Canadian producers of tuyeres to maintain their market, and the Canadian steel industry to have a reliable domestic supply, it is important that the necessary technology for the production of two-compartment tuyeres be developed and transferred to industry."

Ideally, in situ monitoring would supply the input data for numerical modeling of backfill material property requirements. However, clue to production requirements and costs of conducting field tests, input data are often based on small-scale laboratory tests. The size of test samples is known to play an important role in the laboratory assessment of the behaviour of geotechnical materials, including backfill. There are observed differences between the mechanical properties of laboratory-scale samples and those of in situ materials, and these are generally attributed to the differences in scale. Various scaling factors have been proposed for converting laboratory observations to anticipated in situ conditions for soil and rock materials. With regard to mine backfill, very limited studies exist which have involved the effects of sample size on material properties. The literature indicates that reported backfill strength data are based on a variety of test sample sizes and in some cases, specimen geometries. Carefully determined laboratory scale effects could play an important role in estimating the potential backfill behaviour in the field, especially when developing new backfill systems. Laboratory studies were conducted with sample diameters ranging from 50 to 300 mm. Scale factors relating specimen size to strength were developed wherever possible, and are presented in this paper

"In June 1983, the Computer Applications and Process Control Committee (CAPC) of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM) circulated a questionnaire to coal mining, exploration and consulting companies in Canada to determine the industry's level of interest in holding a workshop-style meeting to introduce company personnel to ""state-of-the-art "" computer systems designed to carry out specific technical and management junctions. It was necessary to conduct the survey to determine the specific fields of application and the nature of training which are of most interest.Almost universally, the companies expressed interest in computer workshops and training for applications in the Canadian coal industry. The survey showed that all categories of personnel felt the need for some sort of training. Areas of specific interest identified were: exploration and geology, mine design, reserve calculations, coal mining technology, coal preparation, rock mechanics, ventilation, financial planning, and process simulation. The details of this survey together with an assessment of the significance of computer applications in the Canadian coal industry are presented in this paper."

The Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) vehicle is a trackless, free-steered vehicle used in underground hardrock mining to move large quantities of ore/rock to haulage trucks, ore dump locations, or crushing stations. The purpose of this paper is to show, through case study examples, how principles of human factors can be applied to improve the overall design of the LHD vehicle to enhance line-of-sight (LOS), improve posture and decrease whole-body vibration exposure (WBV). Vehicle modifications (larger cab windows, lower engine profile, smaller buckets, angled radiator profile) can lead to improved line-of-sight. The use of secondary viewing devices, such as cameras, can also improve line-of-sight and allow the operator to adopt a more neutral sitting posture. Seating systems that are suited to the underground mining environment can result in vibration attenuation and less vibration transmitted to the LHD operator. The connection between vehicle design, line-of-sight and driving posture needs to be considered in order to continue to improve the design of the LHD and enable the operator to work in a neutral posture with minimal vibration exposure. Changes leading to improved line-of-sight, vibration reduction, and a neutral sitting posture will lead to fewer LOS related accidents and decreased risk factors for musculoskeletal injury.

"Monometallic zinc mineralization associated with marbles of the Grenville Supergroup in the Mont-Laurier Basin of Quebec is found to be stratiform and to occur (1) within limited zones of dolomitic marble and (2) more precisely along contacts between these marbles and adjacent metaclastic units. Massive sphalerite with accompanying pyrrhotite and pyrite is the prime exploration target, and commonly gives rise to good geochemical anomalies, but generally weak and ambiguous geophysical responses. Disseminated sphalerite in dolomitic marbles may signal proximity to interesting massive mineralization, although, due to weathering, this broadly disseminated mineralization may not be detected easily on outcrops. It is concluded that the western and possibly the eastern margin of the Mont-Laurier Basin constitute favourable areas for continued exploration.IntroductionThe Grenville Supergroup marbles of Ontario, Quebec and New York State host numerous occurrences of zinc mineralization (Fig. I) , several of which have been periodically mined since the beginning of this century (Fig. 2). The Balmat Edwards district of New York is the giant of this depo sit-type, with the production since 1915 of some 20 million tons of ore grading 10% zinc, and acknowledged current reserves of approximately equal tonnage and grade. At present, there is renewed interest in the potential for similar mineralization throughout the Grenville Supergroup, and this paper outlines some of the geological, geochemical and geophysical guidelines that may be employed in the search for new ore. The geologic guidelines are derived especially from lithologic and stratigraphic features which survived intense, multiphase deformation and metamorphism.Although major portions of the extensive Grenville Supergroup hold potential for zinc mineralization, the present study is confined to a known zone of mineralization in the Mont-Laurier Basin of Quebec. Concurrently, we are compiling information on the regional metallogeny of the basin so that our conclusions can be applied to areas of similar Grenville Supergroup host-rocks elsewhere."
