Sand casting of steel is a process that offers the greatest design flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. However, competition from other methods of fabrication is quite keen, constantly forcing the steel casting industry to the production of better quality castings at lower costs. New methods and materials have been put to use in the last ten years by foundries everywhere. This paper, in the form of a progress report, deals with new methods, processes and materials used by Canadian steel foundries for regular production, as well as with developments still in the initial but promising stages. T HE casting of steel to shape is the most direct method of producing steel parts in their final form. It is a basically economical process both as to cost and production time; it is also a process that offers design engineers the greatest flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. "As mines utilize more automation in mining operations to improve efficiency and safety, a corresponding increasing demand is placed on the transport of information. Some of the recent technological advances in underground telecommunications are described for various data, voice and video applications. In particular, two new innovative underground communication systems are described, one with highspeed data at 30 Mbps and the other for minewide evacuation and safety applications.The high-speed data system incorporates state-of-the-art data networking technologies and the existing leaky-cable, narrow-band radio channels. The new system provides over the same basic infrastructure — the highspeed data network at 30 Mbps TCP/IP Ethernet with 100 Base-T interconnection, plus 32 narrow-band radio channels.The second system is a system for minewide evacuation with “through-the-earth” communication infrastructure. Emergency situations can be communicated to and from all the miners within seconds through a central control location. The technology involved does not require leaky cable or any other similar transmission media installation. Many applications are possible, including warning miners of emergency situations, mine rescue operation to communicate with trapped miners, and regular reporting from miners working alone."

"THE world-wide shortage of elemental sulphur, which became sharply apparent in 1950, has focused attention on the commercial exploitation of sulphur-bearing materials such as pyritic ores, sour natural gas, and smelter gases. Although there •are no known commercial deposits of elemental sulphur in Canada, there are vast quantities of these sulphur-bearing materials. The International Nickel Company of Canada and Canadian Industries Limited have for many years collaborated in an effort to develop economic processes for the recovery of sulphur from the smelter gas arising from Inco's metallurgical operation at Copper Cliff, Ontario. While sulphuric acid has been •produced at Copper Cliff for over twenty years, recent developments will result in a 60 per cent increase in acid production early in 1952 and, later in the year, in commencement of the operation of the largest single unit ever erected for the manufacture of liquid sulphur dioxide.The purpose of this paper is to discuss •briefly the general factors associated with the recovery of sulphur from the Copper Cliff smelter gases and to describe the sulphuric acid operations and the liquid sulphur dioxide development.Processes for the manufacture of elemental sulphur, liquid sulphur dioxide, and sulphuric acid from sulphur-dioxide-bearing smelter gases are well known and in some cases •highly developed."

Telvis Limited, manufacturer of an emergency communication dispatcher's broadcasting system, now introduces the possibility of a remote software upgrade to its devices. The paper presents methods, features and ways to accomplish this task. It describes the mechanisms used and the opportunities that arise from the use of this type of functionality. The mechanism software update presented applies to devices on the surface and in underground areas of mines. The electronics used currently allow the use of remote software updates, but the mining equipment makes little use of these methods. This paper aims to start the discussion on this topic and tries to lay the path of development by showing one of the first examples of the application.

GOLGOHAR Mining & Industrial Co., with annual production of 16 million tons, is one of the largest pelletizing and iron ore supplier in Iran that recently this year, because of using mineral processing techniques and extraction of ore body positioning between the metamorphic rocks, about 150 million tons of dry tailings has been created as a result of concentrate production. On the other hand, many environmental issues such as groundwater pollution have been developed by sulfide and silicate gangue minerals, which containing heavy metals such as mercury and arsenic. In this study, a new product with high added value has been introduced for the company by identification and extraction of industrial minerals in dry tailings. Also, by removing large masses of dry tailings, environmental pollution sources were gradually eliminated. This method can be used as a modern waste management approach in the world.

"This paper presents the geographic and geological setting of Saskatchewan Power Corporation's Poplar River Mine in south-central Saskatchewan, about 8 miles from the U.S. border. Generally the mine, which is being expanded to four million tons per year, is in an extremely disturbed geological area with severe dewatering problems. The lignite coal, which is strip mined, is supplied directly to an electric power generating station by means of a 7-mile unit-train private railroad.A number of unique reclamation and socio-economic problems were encountered because of the proximity to the U.S. border and because of the lack of experience of the regulatory authorities in projects of this kind. These are described in some detail, as well as the performance of one of the largest draglines in Canada. IntroductionThe Saskatchewan Power Corporation is a publicly owned utility which has the franchise to supply electricity and natural gas to all customers within the boundaries of Saskatchewan.Saskatchewan is a province which can almost be divided in two: the populated southern portion, principally devoted to farming, and the northern portion which is mostly on the Precambrian Shield and consists of lakes, rocks and muskeg. This portion is largely uninhabited except for a number of small villages. However, in the last few years there has been considerable mineral exploration and development, notably for uranium. This has helped considerably in the diversification of the basic agricultural economy of the province.Saskatchewan consists of 251,700 square miles, 761 miles north to south and an average of 335 miles east to west. It has a population of approximately 960,000, giving a population density of four persons per square mile. The Saskatchewan Power Corporation supplies 357,249 electrical arid 221,378 natural gas customers."

DURING the past 5 years a large amount of money and effort has been expended in exploration of iron-formations and in testing their suitability for beneficiation. Beds of ferruginous material are numerous and widely distributed in the Precambrian rocks of Canada and practically all of the known iron ranges or belts have been examined to a limited degree at least in an effort to evaluate their potential as sources of iron ore. A number of favorable beds have been selected for mining on completion of surface sampling, diamond drilling, extensive metallurgical testing and economic studies, and many other ranges are being studied. There are still a great many iron-formations that have not been evaluated by modern concentration methods and their regional extent is not fully known. The iron-formations are easily located by airborne or ground magnetic surveys but the main task in finding a mineable ore-body of this type amounts to locating a bed sufficiently large for mining which consists of material that can be concentrated economically by modern beneficiating methods. "IntroductionRESEARCH in petroleum production consists primarily in investigations related to the drilling for and recovery of oil. As an organized activity of individual oil companies, production research is now 30 to 35 years old, and the petroleum industry may point with justifiable pride to the achievements of this third of a •century. Emphasis on research has grown through the years until at the present time many of the larger companies operating in the United States •have well-organized production research staffs.In addition to the efforts of the oil companies, significant research and development in petroleum production technology have been performed by oilfield service companies and others. Valuable contributions have been made through fundamental research carried on by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and by various colleges and universities, both in their own programmes and in programmes sponsored by industry, such as those of the American Petroleum Institute. However, the total effort of these groups is small when compared to the sum of the effort devoted to research by the individual .oil companies. In contrast to some industries which conduct the major portion of their research through co-operative, sponsored research at universities or research institutions, research by the petroleum industry is done predominantly by individual company research staffs. These industrial research groups have usually been organized in such a way as to provide liaison and co-ordination with operating technical staffs. In this way, the research groups are kept aware of the major problems confronting the operating departments and, correspondingly, the operating technical people •are able to keep informed on research activity and progress. This type of close contact generally results in prompt testing of research developments in actual operations."

"Sorption process plays a significant role for solute retardation in rock fractures. In this paper, for the aim to investigate the effect of sorption on solute transport in a single rough fracture, a 2D model of representative single rock fracture was built and its roughness was statistically characterized based on the measured data of rock surface topography by laser scanning. A Finite Volume Method (FVM) code was developed to solve the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations and transport equation for numerical modelling the process of fluid flow and solute transport in the rock fracture model. Two groups of simulations were conducted: with and without the consideration of the sorption process with different average flow velocities. The results show that the surface roughness increased the complexities of flow fields, and the non-linear sorption process plays a significant role in the retardation of solute transport through rock fractures. The sorption process caused an obvious lagging time in both the solute concentration fields (plumes) and corresponding breakthrough curves. This lagging time increases with the distance from the inlet boundary, and relatively decreases with the increase of mean velocities. INTRODUCTIONFluid flow and solute transport in fractured rocks is an important research topic for performance and risk assessments for rock engineering projects concerning geo-environment safety, such as radioactive waste disposal, mining, geothermal extraction, reservoir engineering and other contaminant transport processes in geosphere (Berkowitz 2002).The solute transport in the rock fractures mainly involve the advection, surface sorption, matrix diffusion, dispersion, radioactive decay and chemical reactions, governed by general transport equations (e.g. Bodin et al., 2003). Among these transport phenomena, the sorption on the fracture walls can alter solute migration between the fractures, and play an important role in natural retention of solute transport (Weber et al., 1991; Wels et al., 1998; Kumar 2007; Dai et al., 2012). The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of sorption on the solute transport in a single rock fracture with rough surfaces. More complex transport processes, such as matrix diffusion, dispersions, radioactive decay and chemical reactions, are not included in this study."

Western Canada is defined, for the purposes of this paper, as that part of the Dominion bounded approximately by the 95th and 141st meridians of longitude and the 49th and 80th parallels of latitude. It is comprised of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon, and that portion of the Northwest Territories lying to the west of the 95th. meridian. The first magnetic observations made in Western Canada were in the interests of navigation by sea. Observations were made by Captain Middleton in Hudson bay at Churchill and York Factory in 1725, and along the Pacific coast by Captain Cook in 1778 and Captain Vancouver in 1792. The first systematic magnetic survey in Western Canada was made between 1819 and 1826 by Sir John Franklin in his widely distributed explorations. It is of interest to find that while the first magnetic declination observations made in Hudson bay and along the Pacific coast were purely in the interests of navigation, the next investigations, which were made in the Western Arctic, included measurements of inclination and force with those of declination. There was a valid reason for this more complete research into the magnetic field as the construction of declination charts depended on the position of the north magnetic pole. Halley promulgated a theory 1683 that " the globe of the Earth may be regarded as one great magnet, having four magnetic poles, two of them near each pole of the equator, and that in those parts of the world which lie near any of those magnetic poles the needle is chiefly governed thereby, the nearest pole being always predominate over the more remote" . The position of a magnetic pole may be defined as a point where the inclination is 90 degrees and the horizontal force zero. It is obvious that the position cannot be' defined by declination observations alone since, for some distance from the magnetic pole, .the horizontal force is too weak to give directive force sufficient to effect the pointing of a compass.

"The Mic Mac property comprises 994 acres held under mining concession and approximately 2,000 acres held under development licenses in Bousquet township, Abitibi county, western Quebec.Gold was first discovered in this locality by Tom Duval in June, 1936. In February, 1937, Cassels Duval Mines, Limited, was incorporated under Quebec charter to take over the property. In September, 1937, the property was examined by Agaura Explorations, Limited, and an option agreement was signed on October 6th, 1937. In June, 1938, an option for complete ownership was taken on adjoining claims belonging to Norgold Mines, Limited, and in September, 1938, a mining plant was installed and the sinking of a 3-compartment shaft begun. In June, 1939, an option was taken by Mic Mac Explorations, Limited, on seven claims of Mooshla Gold Mines Company, Limited, that adjoined the Norgold block to the east. In December, 1939, a new company, Mic Mac Mines, Limited, was formed, amalgamating the Cassels Duval, Norgold, and Mooshla claims, as well as two claim groups to the west of the mine known as the Vaughan and West Cassels groups."

Highly concentrated pastes of gold nanoparticles were successfully produced by use of a special kind of protective polymer and a mild reductant. Solid part of the pastes consists of up to 85wt% of gold nanoparticles, 10~30 nm in diameter, and residual protective polymer. This component can be diluted by any kinds of solvent at arbitrary rates. Electronics, optics, catalysts, colorants and surface metal coatings are possible application fields. 1. Introduction Noble metal nanoparticles are of interest in a variety of fields ? such as colorants, metal coatings, electronics(1), optics(2), and chemical catalysis(3). Especially, in the color field, the gold nanoparticle has been known as an aesthetic red colorant for stained glass and fine glassware, such as Venetian glass. The mechanism of coloring is attributed to surface plasmon absorption of gold nanoparticles(4,5). The gold nanoparticle in stained glass shows very clear red color, which is very durable for hundreds years. On the other hand, the red color of organic pigment in paint films often fades away within several years. We intended to reproduce the elegant and stable coloring of stained glass in paint films. In order to color a very thin, 20~50?m, paint film like stained glass, production of highly concentrated dispersion of gold nanoparticle is necessary. To achieve this, there were two issues to be overcome. One is how to prevent the coagulation of gold nanoparticles in highly concentrated solution. So far, several methods to prepare gold nanoparticles(6,7) were reported. But only a few methods succeeded to stabilize the gold nanoparticle dispersion at higher concentration than ppm order. The other is controlling of the particle size, this is because the color of gold nanoparticles is very sensitive to the particle size. Only when the particle size lies around 10 nm, the suspension exhibits red color like stained glass.

Automated scanning electron microscopy has been widely used in recent years for gold and other precious metals characterization. However, application of this technology is resource intensive and in most instances needs specialized technical personnel to process the samples and information. Newmont Metallurgical Services (NMS) has recently acquired an ASPEX SEM. The ASPEX SEM offers some significant benefits/improvements in sample preparation and sample processing time. NMS and ASPEX have been working together to develop an approach utilizing this technology for the minerals processing industry and specifically for gold characterization.

"The characterization of the failure process of induced fractures by hydraulic stimulation is fundamental to understanding the generation and evolution of the discrete fracture network within the reservoir. A more detailed analysis of the fracture mechanism can be a powerful tool for identifying fluid flow paths and proppant placement within the reservoir. For example, during the rupture process the energy release is partitioned into different physical processes for which the relative ratio is changed by the presence of fluids or rotations in the local stress field with relation to the frictional resistance in the fracture plane. Fractures occurring in the same host rock under the same stress conditions are expected to rupture similarly, independent of their size (self-similarity). Changes in the scaling relationships of fractures are indicative of a change in the failure process, host rock or in-situ stress. Correlation of failure process data with reservoir rock properties and the in-situ stress field will help identify regions within the reservoir with characteristic types of failures. Further correlation with hydrocarbon production data can be used to develop efficient treatment plans and production diagnostic tools.In this study we investigate the failure process of ~27,000 microseismic (M < -1) fractures induced during a hydraulic fracturing shale completion program in NE British Columbia, Canada by estimating static and dynamic source parameters, such as dynamic and static stress drop, radiated energy, seismic efficiency, moment tensor, fracture plane orientation, slip direction and rupture velocity. On average, the microseismic events have low radiated energy, low dynamic stress and low seismic efficiency, consistent with the obtained slow rupture velocities. Events fail in overshoot mode (slip weakening failure model), with fluids lubricating faults and decreasing friction resistance. Events occurring in deeper formations tend to have faster rupture velocities and are more efficient in radiating energy. Variations in rupture velocity tend to correlate with variation in depth, fault azimuth and elapsed time, reflecting a dominance of the local stress field over other factors.Further identification of spatial and temporal distribution of families of events with similar characteristic rupture behaviors, based on either rock formation, depth, source type, fracture plane orientation, stress drop, pad or proppant stage, may be used as a proxy for specific fracture network development and hydrocarbon production. This information may be used to determine reservoir properties, constrain reservoir geo-mechanical models with measured physical parameters, classify dynamic rupture processes for fracture models and improve fracture treatment designs. These will be the focus of future studies."

"The Smoky Valley Common Operation is managed and 50 percent owned by Echo Bay Mine' s Round Mountain Gold Corporation. The other partners with 25 percent each are Homestake Mining Company and Case Pomeroy. The operation in central Nevada includes an open pit, 3-stage open-circuit crushing train and heap leaching on asphalt pads. Presently, about 18,000 tons per day of 0.039 troy ounce gold per ton are transferred to the leach pads, and a similar tonnage of leach residue is transferred to a waste dump. One million tons of ore are being leached at any one time.Gold and silver cyanide are adsorbed from pregnant leach solution on activated coconut shell carbon granules. Pressure stripping desorbs values from loaded carbon to electrowinning solution.Three electrowinning cells are operated in parallel. Each contains six cathodes. Each cathode includes about 40 troy ounces (2.7 pounds) of Number 2 medium coarse steel wool. The wetted area of each cathode is about 24 by 30 inches. Solution flow is 2 to 3 gallons per minute per electrowinning cell. Average current flow is 25 amperes per cathode. The voltage is controlled in the range of 3 to 4 volts to maintain desired amperage.Twice a week two cathodes are pulled from each cell and drained. Each cathode is split into four portions. These are put in a steel pan coated with WD-40 and dried overnight.Each dried cathode portion is put into a paper sack. Each group of four sacks corresponding to a cathode is weighed together. The typical weight ratio of loaded cathode wool to new cathodes is 9 or 10 to 1. To each sack is added 35 troy ounces of silica, 45 troy ounces of anhydrous borax, 35 troy ounces of nitre, and 5 troy ounces of fluorspar. The sacks are taped shut."

Mines today use various methods of mining to extract ore. Because of the dangerous nature of many of these processes, remotely controlled LHD machines are being used to extract the ore from the draw point. The remote control system, although being made safer all the time, has remained virtually unchanged for many years. The basic functionality is an operator switching the machine to remote control, getting out of the cab, walking up a stand, operating remotely, returning to the cab, switching to manual, driving manually, switching to remote, and switching to manual. It seems repetitive, and time consuming, does it not? Networking, convergence, video, voice, and data infrastructures, and other technologies are growing by leaps and bounds in virtually every industry and region, except for mining. From the comfort of the living room couch, a Canadian can play hockey online with full voice conversations over the Internet with someone in Russia in real time. Yet, a mine superintendent must jump through hoops to have a private conversation with the front line supervisor underground. "Is Joe around anywhere?" If Joe hears the message, he will respond. If not, who knows? Maybe he&apos;s hurt. Maybe he&apos;s not. Where is Joe? Nobody really knows, and that is scary. Today, surface knows that the workers disappeared into the cage at 7:00 a.m. They also know that the workers will probably and hopefully return at 3:00 p.m. Is there not a better way to handle this? With such a complex industry, it seems as if, for the most part, the introduction of new technology into mining has either been overlooked or has been met with some resistance. It is time to step back, look at the process, and see how it can be improved. Key areas of focus will be safety, productivity, dependability, and cost-effectiveness.

Regional and orientation geochemical stream sediment surveys were carried out by the Quebec Department of Energy and Resources in southwestern Quebec, over a part of the Mont Laurier Terrane of the Grenville Province. The area contains some small stratiform zinc deposits. The response of Zn mineralization to geochemical surveys is weak; the known mineralization is not dermed by anomalous samples and consistent patterns. This study uses a technique that increases the geochemical signature of Zn mineralization in filtering out geochemical background components related to lithologies and surficial conditions. The background variations were modelled using principal component analysis, and the filtering technique consists of the partial reconstruction of the data matrix from results of principal component analysis. The filtering procedure considerably enhances the Zn anomalies located in the catchment basins of Zn deposits, and defines some new anomalies in proximity to the marbles of the Mont-Laurier Terrane, the principal metallotect of Zn mineralization.
