The production of single crystal (SX) turbine blades represents the current stateof- the-art in Ni-based superalloy design. With complex casting processes and alloy composition modifications, SX superalloys exhibit superior high temperature mechanical properties to their polycrystalline counterparts. Stresses and plastic deformation can occur in SX nickel-base superalloy engine components at various stages during their manufacture and use. For examples, stresses are created during initial solidification and also during solid state processing such as shot peening, grit blasting, blending, electrodischarge machining and welding. Stresses may also be created during service due to random events such as foreign object impacts. Subsequent exposure of SX to high temperatures during solution heat treatment and brazing repair can result in recrystallization which has been shown to be detrimental to both creep rupture strength and fatigue performance of the components. It is therefore the objective of this paper to understand the recrystallization behavior of two SX superalloys, PWA 1484 and 1483, subjected to pre-stressing and subsequent heat treatments.

"The common style of gold mineralization in the Basal Reef and other auriferous conglomerates of the Witwatersrand Supergroup comprises clusters of gold grains occurring interstitially to quartz and pyrite pebbles as well as gold accumulations attached to the surface of and infilling hairline cracks and fractures in round, compact, detrital pyrite. The latter textural association is generally interpreted as a result of remobilization of originally detrital gold during regional metamorphism and related hydrothermal fluid circulation. There is general agreement that, although gold solubility was low, ore modification occurred during the metahydrothermal event, but uncertainty exists about the magnitude and scale of gold remobilization.Micro-textural and chemical investigation of compact round pyrite and associated gold accumulation has established that gold is preferentially deposited on chemically heterogeneous pyrite surfaces. Combinations of alternating high- and low-As zones in pyrite result in mixed np-type conductivity accompanied by electron exchange and the reduction-driven deposition of gold at the cathode. This model does not explain gold accumulations which are not immediately linked to chemical heterogeneities and it is inferred that an additional control on the deposition of gold was exerted by physical defects which lead to zones of increased charge density and/or areas of focussed conductivity. The inferred precipitation mechanisms suggest that submicrocopic physical and chemical controls are the important factors that determined the sites of gold nucleation and that precipitation mechanisms based on physicochemical changes of the hydrothermal system were not involved. The Basal Reef contains on average close to 5OJo of round, detrital, chemically zoned pyrite which provides a large number of electrochemically active pyrite surfaces. The extremely effective electrochemical precipi- . tation mechanism together with the low solubility of gold in Witwatersrand fluids is the main reason for the spatially restricted remobilization of gold in the conglomerate reefs."

Introduction The Little Long Lac mine is situated in the Thunder Bay mining district, township of Errington, Ontario. The mine is located on the south side of the most westerly bay of Little Long Lac. The property consists of 36 claims, which comprise some 1,400 acres. This group of claims was staked in August, 1932, by Tony Oklend and Tom Johnson, and, after surface sampling, was optioned by the present controlling interests, who diamond-drilled it during the winter of 1932-33. In early spring, a small steam-driven plant was installed, and shaft sinking commenced on June 1st, 1933. During the summer, all supplies are transported to the mine from Hardrock station, at mileage 18 on the Canadian National Railway line from Longlac to Port Arthur. At Hardrock, which is seven miles from the mine, the railway skirts a bay of Little Long Lac, and supplies are loaded directly from railway cars to scows. Two scows are used, of 30-and 45-ton capacity, respectively. A 36-ft. pointer, powered by a 35 h.p. engine, is used as a tug. A good winter-road has been cut out from Geraldton to the mine, for winter transportation. Geraldton is about two miles north of the mine, and is also located on the Canadian National railway. A hard-surface road is now being constructed for summer as well as winter use. Geology The Little Long Lac gold area covers the northern limits of a large synclinal structure, the contact of the Keewatin flows and sediments, striking about twenty degrees north of west, with the dip of the sediments varying from eighty degrees north to seventy degrees south, the average being around eighty degrees south. The vein worked by Little Long Lac Gold Mines occurs in massive sedimentary rock of about the composition of arkosic or quartzitic greywacke, and consists of a shear-zone up to fifteen feet in width, striking N.75°E. and dipping steeply to the south, which has been filled by numerous narrow, parallel quartz veins and. veinlets. These are well mineralized. with arsenopyrite, pyrite, and some chalcopyrite and stibnite, and carry considerable quantities of visible gold. They show more than one age of quartz deposition, the quartz being fractured and re-cemented. The arkosic rocks separating the veins and veinlets are also slightly mineralized with pyrite. Work to date has indicated the probability that the vein-shear is controlled by local drag-folding.

"The Voisey’s Bay mill processes a high-grade pentlandite and chalcopyrite ore in a largely pyrrhotite/troilite matrix. From 1994 to 1997, circuit development focused on making a 14% nickel concentrate. When flowsheet development resumed in 2001, the target grade was raised to 20% ni. initially triethylene tetramine and sulfite pyrrhotite depressants were used in a lime circuit, but by recycling process water and the contained thiosalts, the required nickel grade was made without depressants. construction of the mill was fast-tracked, with start-up in september 2005. ramp-up was faster than other recent nickel installations, with tonnage being limited by concentrate dewatering due to higher-thanexpected ore grades.RÉSUMÉ l’usine de traitement de Voisey’s Bay traite un minerai à teneur élevée en pentlandite et chalcopyrite dans une matrice formée surtout de pyrrhotite/troïlite. In this study, the effects of milling time, chemical composition and heat treatment on microstructure and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Fe-Si (6.5-25 at.% Si) alloys prepared by mechanical alloying have been investigated. The results show that increasing the milling time or the Si content, decreases the lattice parameter and increases the internal microstrain. The prepared powders mainly consist of micron-sized particles with an average grain size of less than 20 nm. The specific saturation magnetization values are slightly less than those of single crystal or conventional Fe-Si alloys and decrease as Si content increases. The coercive force values of the nanocrystalline as-milled powders are much higher than those of corresponding Fe-Si bulk alloys with a minimum at 13.5 at.% Si. The values of coercive force decreased after annealing but it seams that the residual strain developed during milling is not the major contributing factor to the higher values of coercive force in the mechanically alloyed powders and nanocrystals behave as single-domain particles without exchange interaction between them.

"Previous work has shown that the strengthening Al-Mn alloys with copper leads to the formation of an undesirable reduction in recrystallized grain size. In this study the mechanisms of strengthening and recrystallization behavior in a continuously cast automotive heat exchanger fin stockof Al-1.1wt%Mn-0.5wt%Fe-0.3wt%Si with a0.3wt%Cu addition were investigated. Metallurgical analysis revealed that the Cu strengthening was dominated by the formation of dispersoid particles, while solid solution strengthening decreased with the Cu additions. This result is attributed to the decrease in the amount of Mn solid solution. The post brazing recrystallized grain size was reduced compared to that not containing Cu. It is postulated that the Cu addition leads to a decrease in the amount of Mn in solid solution which leads to a finer grain size. This effect is attributed to Mn in the aluminum matrix inhibiting boundary migration but allowing other grains to grow during heat treatment. The results are rationalized based on particle stimulated nucleation (PSN), wherein dispersoid particles are more likely to become active recrystallization nuclei during the heat treatment. The increase in the number of active dispersoid particles with Cu addition is correlated to the recrystallized grain structure.INTRODUCTIONImprovements in properties such as strength, braze ability and corrosion resistance in thermal fin stock alloys are all means to gain improved efficiency in heat exchangers particularly in automotive applications. While Al-Mn alloys dominate automotive heat exchanger fin stock alloy, even small chemical compositional changes can profoundly influence these properties (Kawaharaet al., 2004; Yoshino et al., 2009). The microstructure (particularly the grain size and shape) also plays a key role in determining the product performance and hence the thermo-mechanical processing (TMP) must also be considered. The casting method (typically conventional direct chill, DC, or continuous casting) significantly influences the properties in no small part due to the very different TMP routes that are used. Continuous casting is generally favored for fin stock applications as its higher cooling rate (which can be 2 to 3 orders of magnitude higher than DC casting) leads to finer as-solidified intermetallic particles and an increase in super-saturated solid solution elements (such as Mn)that are known to improve fin stock performance such as strength, braze ability(Okiet al., 2008)."

Hanging wall deformation monitoring at the Kiruna Mine is a major concern for Luossavaara- Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) since underground production is deepening towards the Kiruna Town. In the quest for more effective monitoring techniques, LKAB decided to evaluate satellite-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry?s ability to monitor ground subsidence by generating continuous deformation maps from satellite radar images. While adopted by other geoscience-related industries, SAR interferometry is still relatively untested in the Mining industry. This paper describes how subsidence is actually monitored on the Kiruna Mine?s hanging wall and gives an insight on SAR interferometry?s principle. The encouraging results are discussed as well as the technique?s benefits (continuous deformation mapping, low cost, fast, etc) and limitations (sensitivity to snow and vegetation cover).

The Outotec Flash Smelting process is widely used in primary copper production. A layer of slag on top of matte (copper–iron sulphide melt) creates a barrier through which matte droplets descend. Droplets of different sizes settle through the layer at different rates, which increases possibility of copper losses as smaller matte droplets may be removed with the slag. In this work CFD-DEM (computational fluid dynamics – discrete element method) coupling was used to simulate matte droplets settling through the slag during slag tapping. Discrete droplets and slag flow were simulated with DEM and CFD, respectively. This new approach enables tracking and solving movement and interactions of individual droplets. User-defined models were created to take coalescence and reaction kinetics into account. Coalescence created larger droplets, while the reactions decreased droplet size and increased its density. Drag caused funnelling effect, which pulled droplets towards the centre line of the descending cluster. This research is the only study known by the present authors in modelling liquid-liquid systems with the CFD-DEM coupling. Simulating coalescence and chemical reactions for discrete droplets enables more realistic simulations. However, CFD- DEM simulations are computationally resource intensive already without additional models, so a full scale industrial settler modelling still waits for further increase in computer performance. INTRODUCTION Flash smelting is a method used in copper and nickel production. In the flash smelting process, oxidation of sulphides in a concentrate is used to release energy needed to smelt the feed. In the process, copper matte is formed. Matte has copper content in the range of 55 – 70% (Sridhar, Toguri, & Simeonov, 1997), the rest is mainly sulphur and iron but has still many other impurities (Taskinen, Seppälä, Laulumaa, & Poijärvi, 2001). Oxidized iron forms iron-silicate slag while SO2 is collected for acid production (Davenport & Partelpoeg, 2015). The Outotec flash smelting furnace (FSF) can be divided in four major component: concentrate burner, reaction shaft, settler and uptake. Concentrate, flux and oxygen enriched air are injected into the reactor through the concentrate burner. The mixture then reacts in the reaction shaft forming matte and slag, which are collected in the settler, while off-gases flow out of the reactor through uptake for heat and dust recovery, and SO2 collection for H2SO4 production. The matte and slag form separate layers due to immiscibility and density difference. Raw material feed is continuous, but the matte and the slag are tapped periodically. A flash smelting furnace is depicted in Figure 1.

Non-ferrous metals find their applications in smartphones, tablets and computers. These materials with their particular properties are the basis of our modern life. SMS group is well prepared for this huge market and for growing future challenges. A large contribution here is the new joint venture PolyMet Solutions that was founded by SMS group and Mettop, an Austrian engineering company, with the objective to develop new technical solutions for the primary copper production lines as well as for non-ferrous metals starting with the primary smelting of concentrate and ending with the electrolysis. PolyMet Solutions provides the process know-how whereas SMS group supplies the plants and equipment and Mettop the key components. SMS group and Mettop also cooperate in the field of tankhouse technology. Together with Montanwerke Brixlegg AG, Mettop has developed together with a parallel flow technology (METTOP-BRX Technology), allowing a current efficiency of above 98 % at a current density of 420 A/m², which is a milestone in copper electrolysis. For the secondary copper production route, SMS group and PolyMet Solutions developed an innovative refining furnace (PolyRefine) for the smelting and refining of copper scrap. The refined copper is directly charged to the Contirod line to produce copper rods and wires. The innovative cooling solutions of SMS and PolyMet Solutions come into play where furnaces have to stand the highest loads and stresses, for instance in areas of very high temperatures or temperature fluctuations, aggressive exhaust gases and slags, or at critical spots such as taphole areas. Custom-tailored cooling systems for furnace vessels make sure varying loads are compensated in a targeted and effective manner. The solutions include air cooling, spray cooling, cooling technologies with integrated copper elements such as CFM (Composite Furnace Modular) cooling systems, plate and finger coolers. The major innovation in the field of furnace cooling is the ILTEC (Ionic Liquid Cooling) Technology which paves the way for increased plant safety. This revolutionary, patented cooling technology is jointly marketed by Mettop and SMS group. It permits water-free cooling to be implemented and thus makes operation safe wherever it is applied. INTRODUCTION Non-ferrous metals or NF metals are changing the world. There is no modern industrial sector that can do without these valuable metals. Non-ferrous metals find their applications in smartphones, tablets and computers. These materials with their particular properties are the basis of our modern life. The importance of the non-ferrous metals market is reflected by two figures. In 2018, the production of non-ferrous metals was worth more than 237 billion Euros. This contrasts with 255 billion Euros of the value of iron and ferro- alloy production in the same year (International Organizing Comittee for the World Mining Congresses, 2018). Hence, the NF metal industry is almost as important as the iron and steel industry. SMS group is well prepared for this huge market and for growing future challenges. A large contribution here is the new joint venture PolyMet Solutions that was founded by SMS group and Mettop, an Austrian engineering company, with the objective to develop new technical solutions and to enhance customer value. The prices of nearly all metals have come under pressure during the past few years. An investigation of the pressure pulse spectrum generated by the gas dispersion processes in a Peirce Smith copper converter was undertaken via the simultaneous measurement of four tuyeres using high frequency pressure transducers. The data was captured, stored, and analyzed using digital data processing techniques; including power spectral density plots, band-pass filtering, and a principal component analysis (PCA). The process was characterized throughout by a dominant 3 Hz pulse signature attributed to the formation of lateral gas envelopes. In particular, test tuyeres in the tuyere line tended to operate synchronously at the dominant frequency, regardless of operating conditions tested and despite being distributed along the converter. Synchronous behavior is thought to arise from the acoustic coupling and possible resonance behavior of the gas delivery system on the converter.

Poland is the ninth largest coal producer in the world and Coal Company is the largest Polish producer of this deposit yielding 51% of national production. Coal Company mines are located in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. These are underground mines which operate in difficult geological conditions at great depths of up to 1200 m. One of the most common natural hazards in Polish mines are rockburst and seismic hazard impacting on surface infrastructure and habitants. In the assessment of the rockburst and seismic hazard methods of mining seismology play a leading role. This paper presents progress that was achieved in the last few years in the implementation of new seismic monitoring systems and seismic interpretation methods for the prevention of hazard deriving from seismicity induced by mining. This progress in assessment of rockburst hazard and impact of seismic activity on the surface infrastructure was achieved through close cooperation between the Coal Company and Central Mining Institute ? the country?s leading scientific institute in the field of mining seismology. New theoretical solutions are in the process of testing in mines of Coal Company where seismic monitoring systems are installed and controlled by well-qualified personnel. Some directions of further joint actions to increase the effectiveness of rockburst and seismic hazard assessment are presented as well.

The northern part of the P. G. E. railway traverses and opens up that part of the province known as the Cariboo district, comprising the Cariboo and Quesnel Mining Divisions, which are a part of the Northeastern Mineral Survey District. Williams lake, a divisional point on the P. G. E. is near the southern boundary of the Quesnel Division and from this point the railway runs northerly to Quesnel, its present terminus. From Quesnel the railway is projected and partially constructed to Prince George on the Canadian National railway; therefore its general trend is northerly through the heart of the Cariboo district. Early History There is no need to outline at any length the early history of mining in the Cariboo. It is sufficient to say that the great gold rush to the Cariboo, in the early sixties, was practically the commencement of mining in British Columbia. These early placer mining operations centred around the old towns of Quesnel Forks, Keithley Creek, Barkerville and Van Winkle, the latter now called Stanley. Many millions of dollars of placer gold have been taken out and the end of production is not in sight yet. The maximum yearly production was reached about 1863, after which there was a gradual decline in output. During the war years production was at a very low figure but a steady, even if small, increase has occurred in the last three years and prospects are encouraging for a much greater output.

The elastic-plastic behavior and the fracture mechanisms of two 2198 Al-Cu-Li thin sheets are investigated. The first material (2 mm thick) is in a recrystallized state after cold rolling. The second material (6 mm thick) is hot rolled and has a fibrous grain structure. The two materials are studied in both T351 and T851 conditions. Tensile tests are carried out along different sheet directions using flat and notched specimens. Fracture resistance was characterized using Kahn tear specimens and M(T) panels. Macroscopic fracture surface of smooth tensile specimens depends not only on testing material but also on the loading direction. For Kahn tear specimens, fracture is initiated in a small flat triangle whereas slant fracture is observed during crack propagation. Fracture mechanisms were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray 3D tomography.

Underground coal gasification is technology which enables energy to be extracted from coal beds where mining by means of classical methods is either impossible or uneconomical. The process of coal gasification itself is a complex phenomenon which includes chemical and physical processes: thermal, hydrological and mechanical. Additionally, the analysis of underground coal gasification is difficult to carry out for environment reasons, this being due to the local characteristics of the areas where it is carried out. This paper deals with interaction of geo-reactor with surrounding rock mass, it omits the chemical processes inside geo-reactor itself. Due to the complexity of the processes proceeding and during underground coal gasification coupled with minimal practical experience in using this technology, it is difficult to estimate its influence on the surrounding rock mass. Within this scope, the use of numerical programs can be useful. This paper presents a trial of modeling the processes accompanying underground coal gasification. The processes proceeding and during the underground coal gasification are characterized, and the significant, specific phenomena are discussed, with respect to the influence on the surrounding rock mass. For the chosen processes, examples of numerical calculations are presented. These enabled conclusions to be drawn and also provided directions for the modeling of the underground coal gasification processes.

A RAPID glance over the history of The Mining Society of Nova Scotia shows that in its fifty years of service, which it is now rounding out, the Society has had an honourable career, rendered signal service to the mining industry of the Province, and helped to shape and improve legislation bearing on our mines and minerals, besicles publishing very many excellent papers and subsequent discussions thereon dealing with all subjects in its field of activity. THE GOLD MINERS? CLUB OF NOVA SCOTIA: The Society has the distinction of being generally regarded as the oldest mining fraternity in Canada ( 1). Iris the direct outgrowth or reorganization of The Gold Miners' Club of Nova Scotia, which was organized in March, 1887, at a period when the gold mining industry was very prominent in the Province. Mr. Geo. W. Stuart, who, in 1934, was the only living member of the parent association, informed me that the seventeen Charter Members of The Gold Miners' Club were John H. Anderson, Charles F. Andrews, A. B. Cox, Clarence H. Dimock, George E. Francklyn, L. W. Getchell, John E. Hardman, Alonzo A. Hayward, Major R. G. Leckie, W. L. Libbey, Edward M. McDonald, G. F. McNaughton, George A. Pyke, H. A. Sanders, C. E. Willis, Benjamin C. Wilson, and George W. Stuart. Others joined later in the same year.

"This study aims to discuss personal and behavioral parameters contributing to heat-related accidents. To study the prevention approaches, it is essential to look at the various factors at the individual, management, and industrial levels. Qualitative risk analysis methods are used based on the public data in the USA to find the impact of the environmental and behavioral parameters on the heat stress and heat strain of mine workers. The effects of individual factors such as worker experience, age, fitness, lifestyle, acclimation, and more are illustrated. The significance of factors such as the roles of the mine management and regulatory agencies are addressed.INTRODUCTIONOccupational hazards in mining industry endanger the health and safety of the workers and productivity loss for mining companies. Among those hazards is the exposure to excessive heat that has adverse effects on the health of mine workers. The intensity of heat load is a significant factor in fatal and non-fatal heat-related accidents. Severe environmental conditions combined with a high level of activity in the mining industry increases the vulnerability of individuals to health and safety hazards (Ngwenya, Oosthuizen, Cross, Frimpong, & Chaibva, 2018). Lack of regulations and legislation addressing the heat issue in the mining industry (i.e., underground and open pit mines, processing plants) also raises widespread concerns.Along the climate change, various sources contribute to the overall heat load at a mine site (Hanna, Kjellstrom, Bennett, & Dear, 2011; Kjellstrom, Lemke, Hyatt, & Otto, 2014). In underground mines, the majority of heat comes from different sources such as geothermal gradient, equipment, auto compression, groundwater, and blasting (Maurya, Karena, Vardhan, Aruna, & Raj, 2015). On the surface, however, the majority of heat load can be sourced to solar energy. The exposure to excessive heat might result in heat-related illnesses, fatigue and fainting, loss of concentration, performance reduction, and production loss (Kocsis & Sunkpal, 2017; Roghanchi, 2017). The severity of the effects depends on duration and level of exposure and the response of an individual to heat stress. The response of an individual is influenced by different factors including age, gender, fitness, lifestyle, experiences, and past medical history."

Underground mining in general and more so the coal mining is a hazardous venture as it is a struggle against nature and natural forces. The stability of roadways has a direct impact on production and productivity. The roadway stability can be strongly influenced by the direction of the drivage. The stress studies are useful to provide a frame work for understanding the influence of drivage direction on roadway conditions, and to illustrate how mapping techniques can enhance this understanding. The act of mining can concentrate and re-orient the original stresses. Whenever coal is removed, the overburden weight that it carried is transferred. Vertical stresses are similarly affected when the roof is deformed or failed. The Singareni Collieries Company Ltd., a joint Public sector undertaking of the Government of Andhra Pradesh and India is conducting coalmining operations in the Godavari Valley Coalfield and is catering to the needs of a large part of South India. With the technology update, it is looking for safe mining and to achieve higher production. As a part of this, an attempt is made to understand the stress conditions prevailing on the mine blocks by different ways and means in terms of geology, structure and tectonics of the Godavari Valley coalfield, satellite imagery studies, cleat pattern, stress measurement studies conducted in different mine blocks, and stress mapping technique.
