"Mineralogical techniques including microscopic methods, reflected and transmitted light microscopy, Cathodoluminescence (CL) and Scanning Electron Microscopy equipped with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS), are useful in determining the quality of industrial minerals. They are essential for studying ores and metallurgical products including the evaluation of physical characteristics of the mineral, paragenetic relationships, associations with possible deleterious contaminants (e.g., sulphides), spatial distribution within the ore zones and liberation characteristics. The methods are inexpensive, and provide quick identification and distinction among the industrial minerals and the gangue minerals in a section. Additionally, SEM is necessary to reveal complex textural sequences and 3-D measurements of minerals and quick semi-quantitative analysis.Common analytical methods include Electron Microprobe Analyses (EMPA) and Whole Rock Analysis (WRA) (commonly with XRF and ICP) for major and trace elements. The EMPA analyses of industrial minerals provide information on the purity of the analyzed grains as opposed to the bulk chemical analyses that may be misleading due to contamination by other associated common “gangue” minerals. These techniques have been implemented for the case studies of wollastonite, V-magnetite and muscovite. Therefore, these methods can provide extremely useful information and lead to the implementation of a successful pilot-testing programme.MINERALOGICAL EVALUATION OF DEPOSITSDespite their considerable and increasing economic importance, industrial mineral deposits have traditionally been neglected by economic geologists, and are only rarely the subject of the detailed analysis widely lavished on metallic mineralization. Moreover, in that they generally represent concentrations of “normal” rock-forming minerals, albeit commonly with particular textural and/or geochemical features, they have tended to fall between the mainstream of petrogenetic studies and mineral deposit research (Grammatikopoulos 1999). For many industrial minerals, little attention has been paid to the factors responsible for their local concentration as large and high-grade bodies. This comparative neglect has particularly been the case for minerals such as talc and wollastonite, widespread in metamorphic rocks, in which they are reasonably interpreted as components of assemblages derived, respectively, from pelitic sediments, ultramafic igneous rocks and siliceous limestones."

"The Pulp Chemistry Monitor (PCM) has been installed and operated in a number of concentrators in Australasia, and has produced some very interesting results. PCM measures the pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, temperature and oxygen demand of process streams within a concentrator continuously and in real time.In the example presented in the paper the cleaner feed pulp chemistry is measured, and related back to changes in the mineralogy as well as variations in metallurgical response. For example, a decrease in Eh and dissolved oxygen as well as an increase in the oxygen demand. These changes in the pulp chemistry appear to coincide with increases in the feed grades, probably higher pyrite grades. Further, these variations in pulp chemistry and feed mineralogy have a negative impact on the concentrate grade and recovery.The implication is that if the pulp chemistry is monitored it is possible to predict changes in the mineralogy of the system, and from this the metallurgical response. Further, the changes in pulp chemistry can be used in a control system to counter the changes in mineralogy and maintain the metallurgy.IntroductionIt has long been recognized at a fundamental level that the flotation behaviour of sulphide minerals is dependent on the pH and Eh of the system (for example: Tolun and Kitchener, 1964; Woods, 1976). However, measuring pulp chemical parameters within an operating concentrator has had limited attention. Woodcock and Jones (1970a and b) were among the first to actually collect data from operating plants. Jones and Woodcock (1984) identified some of the chemical complexities of flotation pulps, and noted that most concentrators already operate at high levels of metallurgical performance but there was still considerable scope for improvement. These gains would, in part come from more effective chemical control. In the same volume, Healy (1984) discussed metal ion hydrolysis and precipitation, redox chemistry and how the surface chemistry of sulphide minerals can be influence flotation behaviour. The impact of grinding environment on the pulp chemistry and flotation response of a complex polymetallic sulphide ore is discussed by Forssberg and Subrahmanyam (1993). Their work essentially contrasts the pulp chemical and flotation performance of pulps ground with conventional ferrous grinding media to a fully autogenous system. The data suggested that the reduction or removal of iron hydrolysis contamination from the system could have a positive influence on flotation behaviour, and perhaps the first stage of “controlling” the chemistry of the system should be in the grinding circuit. Grano et al (1995) demonstrated that the collection of pulp, solution and surface chemical data could identify weaknesses within a concentrator, and from these data develop, test and implement solutions that improved the process. Greet et al (2006) showed that the pulp chemical trends observed through primary grinding and rougher flotation circuits of most sulphide flotation concentrators are approximately the same. There are differences in the magnitude of various pulp chemical parameters (pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, temperature and oxygen demand) as a result of variations in the feed mineralogy and processes employed. Further, it was noted the Eh shifted to more reducing values of the ten days measurements were collected, and this change could be traced to an increase in the iron sulphide content of the feed. Metallurgically, this resulted in an increase in nickel recovery through the recovery of nickeliferous iron sulphides, and a decrease in nickel concentrate grade."

"The study evaluated the impact on overall circuit metallurgy of improving the performance of the two flotation columns that make up the final Mo cleaning stage in the Cu/Mo separation circuit at Highland Valley Copper mine. The results showed that a key factor to improve the overall circuit metallurgy was to control the size of the bubbles generated in the columns. When a large proportion of small (< 1 mm) bubbles were generated, the production rate of solids-in-concentrate increased by a factor of 4-5 compared to typical production figures without compromising concentrate quality. This increase in concentrate production rate reduced the circulating load in the circuit causing a significant increase of Mo recovery. A statistical analysis of historical production data showed a strong relationship between final concentrate production rate and overall Mo recovery. This relationship along with the results from this study indicated an opportunity to increase the recovery of Mo from 90% (typical) to 94% without downgrading concentrate grade. This 4% increase represents about 14,000 lbs or $500,000 worth of Mo each month at current metal prices.To provide a rational interpretation of the results, this study also examined whether the model of Gorain et al. (1997; 1998; 1999) could explain the increase of Mo recovery seemingly resulting from the decrease of bubble size. The data showed that the model predictions did not agree with the experimental data, i.e., for a given change (decrease) of bubble size, the predictions underestimated significantly the observed recovery increase. An interpretation based on the fundamental analysis of Finch and Dobby (1990) and Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2005) is proposed to explain the discrepancy between measurements and predictions obtained from Gorain et al.’s model.INTRODUCTIONIt is generally accepted that the size of the bubbles generated in a flotation cell – a concept usually referred to as “bubble size” – has a significant effect on metallurgical performance. However, a significant number of mineral processing practitioners often question, with valid reasons, the practical benefits of implementing process improvement strategies based on controlling bubble size. “Small” bubbles are often considered to be “favourable”, but how small they need to be for a particular case, or how to adjust operating conditions to control a target bubble size, or whether the bubbles need to be smaller in the first place are questions that usually remain unanswered. "Washing can be defined as the process used to eliminate or reduce the dirt (presence of fines or slimes) of one material. It is also the basic and oldest process applied to ore preparation for further concentration. This process, in combination with commnution and screening, form the so called washing plant and in many cases produce end products. To follow we will discuss how the Hydro-Clean’s different modes of operation result in several advantages related with mine waste reduction, recovery of saleable product, lower capital costs, superior washing results, less stress for the material, a wider range of application and less maintenance cost. Aside from these positive factors, its lower operation costs related to the consumption of energy and water are presented. "This paper reports on an investigation into gas and dust concentrations in Ruttan Mine&apos;s exhaust air. The values obtained indicate that there is excellent potential to recirculate approximately 25% of the hot exhaust air into the intake air to reduce winter heating costs. Contaminant concentrations vary significantly during the course of the working shift and decrease in the mine exhaust system as the air returns to surface. A proposed on-line control system is outlined which would permit recirculation to be implemented with a pay-back period of less than two years. IntroductionIncreased energy costs and depressed mineral prices have resulted in mines, which use winter ventilation air heating, reviewing their systems to try to reduce costs. Heating costs can be significant, for example, Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan spends an average of $580,000 per mine per year and Ruttan mine spends approximately $IM per year on propane for its direct-fired heating system.Several method s of reducing heating costs have been considered and the following have potential application.Heat Exchange Between Exhaust andIntakeThis is usually accomplished by run-round glycol systems. The system is limited by ice formation on the coils in wet exhaust air and by the low exhaust air temperature, usually l0ºC. It also requires close proximity of the intake and exhaust airways to ma~e the cost of the connecting pipeline and pump systems economic . A feasibility study by Inco&apos;s Thompson operation reported that a proposed system of this type had a 19-year payback period and was, therefore, uneconomic. Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan is currently investigating plastic heat exchangers for a trial system because of corrosion on metal exchangers. It has the advantage of a 17°C exhaust temperature and relatively dry exhaust air.Waste Heat ReclamationThe waste heat from compressors and hoists can be used for heating in some mines. The feasibility of such a system depends on the individual layout and the proximity of the heat source to the inlet airway. Other mines have considered using the exhaust air in greenhouses to provide a cash crop."

The calibration of these instruments is not difficult but must be performed carefully and with consideration for the principles of X-ray spectrometry. A discussion of successful calibration procedures as well as examples of several common mistakes is presented.IntroductionOn-stream X-ray analyzers (OSA) have become an integral part of modem mineral dressing plants. Advances in instrumentation and computer software make the analysis of process streams fast, accurate and precise. Proper instrument calibration that respects the fundamentals of X-ray spectrometry is essential if the data generated are to be reliable. Often the importance of this task is underestimated and delegated to a person with inadequate XRF training. Successful OSA calibration is the result of careful, systematic procedures.On-stream analysis is perhaps the most important tool that has been provided for the concentrator metallurgist. Combined with powerful, low cost PC's and distributed control systems, real-time elemental analysis affords today's metallurgist many opportunities to troubleshoot and optimize his process.Before OSA, operators had to be very experienced if they were to achieve good results. Even with hourly grab samples, most changes in control approach would still be based on visual cues from the circuit and gut instinct. Real-time analyses have changed that completely.The last two decades have seen a persistent drive to reduce production costs. Operations utilizing OSA have been the most successful in this endeavor. Direct benefits from the application of OSA are fairly obvious. Operators are able to make incremental changes in operational parameters (e.g. reagent addition, pH, cell level), and immediately monitor the effects. Variations in the characteristics of the mill feed can be identified and addressed immediately. More progressive operations have linked analyses to control loops to adjust process setpoints ( e.g. reagent additions), and to change them automatically according to formulas based on previous experience."

"Comparable transaction analysis is the best known of the market approaches to valuation of exploration-stage mineral properties. The analysis of option and farm-in agreements can also provide useful guidance to valuators. While such approaches can be distorted by incomplete analysis, market-based methods are capable of providing consistent, credible results when carried out carefully with due consideration paid to all factors which buyers and sellers consider when dealing in the real market. IntroductionMineral properties without defined resources present one of the most challenging tasks to the mineral valuator. This paper will concentrate on market-based approaches to valuation of such properties. Other authors at MM2000 presented papers on cost and income approaches. Sorentino (2000) also provides a useful overview with some provacative commentary on methods.Market based-approaches are based on the principle of substitution and include such techniques as: comparable transaction analysis (sometimes referred to as sales comparison analysis); farm-in commitment (or option agreement) analysis; rules-of-thumb; and comparable market value analysis.Are there any valuation standards available to assist the valuator? In Canada there are none that apply to the valuation of mineral assets or securities. This problem is being addressed, at least in part, by the CIMVal Committee of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM)1. Further, the recently established Canadian Association of Mineral Valuators will be giving consideration to the adoption of valuation standards."

Between the early 20th Century and the present, the production of mined copper ore has increased from tens of millions of tonnes per annum to several billion tonnes per annum, an unprecedented increase. Contemporaneously, the average grade of mined copper ore has declined from over 2% to approximately 0.5%. Again, in parallel, the price of copper has increased dramatically to reflect the increasing cost of extracting and beneficiating such large amounts of low-grade ore. Within the period the copper price however exhibited several periods of intense volatility, driven by interrelationships between demand and supply, themselves strongly driven by periodic industry developments in the fields of exploration, ore extraction, mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. It is notable that these periods of intense innovation exhibit a strong correlation to preceding periods of price, demand or production volatility. This paper examines key trends in each theme between 1900 and 2018 and draws strong conclusions as to the interrelationship between them. INTRODUCTION The production of copper metal has increased from around half a million tonnes per annum to over fifteen million tonnes per annum over the course of the 20th Century. Contemporaneously, the average grade of copper ore mined has declined from over 2% to approximately 0.5% copper by weight. As a result, the volume of Run-of-Mine (ROM) copper ore required has increased from around ten million tonnes per annum to over a five billion tonnes per annum over the period, an unprecedented increase. The adage is that demand drives supply, that prices rise in times of high demand and/or short supply, and that prices fall when supply catches up with demand. The market sellers in biblical times knew this well; mediaeval market sellers equally. Dutch tulip sellers in the 1600’s experienced both in extremis — much to their dismay — and the great industrialists and early capitalists of the industrial revolution knew this also. Mining recently went through a cycle where investors and producers both believed that the “old” rules did not apply any more and that the industry was in a “supercycle” where prices would continue to rise on the back of increasing demand. However, as the GFC of 2008–2011 showed, this was not to be. Another adage says that we constantly innovate to lower costs of production. Is this true? Do we only innovate to lower cost? Has the true cost of producing copper actually gone down over the century? Or are there other balancing forces at play? Herb Kellogg, in his Centenary address to the American Institute of Mining Engineers (now SME), categorized two types of innovation: ‘Bigger and Better’, and ‘New Process’ (Kellogg, 1970). ‘Bigger and Better’ allows increased production at presumably lower cost; ‘New Process’ supports the same result at presumably the same scale, but at significantly enhanced efficiencies and (therefore) lower cost. It is suggested that both types of innovation are constantly and interchangeably required to achieve the kind of scale-up, at achievable operating and capital cost that the industry has achieved over the period. What can be shown, over this last Century and a bit, is that supply and demand are indeed inextricably linked, price and demand are linked, but so are price and cost of production. And the innovation required to sustain that weaves in between them all, cost-effectively increasing production capacity or lowering the cost of production at the same throughput, and sometimes both.

The availability of mineral aggregates for construction purposes is rapidly declining through inadequate resource planning. restrictive zoning and legislation , and competing land uses. The Geological Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has undertaken to provide aggregate inventory reports for all townships designated under The Pits and Quarries Control Act, 1971, and eventually for all towns hips in heavily populated areas. The reports contain maps and recommendations for extractive zoning by municipalities; of necessity only the largest deposits are given priority recommendations. It is intended that these reports should improve the resource planning in areas underlain by large aggregate deposits. The inventory is only possible because a concentrated effort has been made to map the Quaternary geology of populated areas over the last ten years. Future needs require that we develop methods to determine the extent of poorly defined and buried aggregates and that we look for natural alternatives.

The ADS system was developed to reduce accidents related to haul trucks operating under low visibility conditions in surface mining and construction sites, which is based on the GPS, mesh-wireless networks, and the Google-Earth 3D graphic engine as the graphic interface and mine-mapping server. This system has the capability to pin-point and track vehicles in real time using a 3D interface, which is based on user-based AutoCAD mine maps using the Google-Earth graphics interface. All equipped vehicles are shown in a 3D mine map stored in a local server through a wireless network. When low visibility conditions are present, the system indicates available exit/escape routes for driver safety. The research results indicate that the ADS system potentially increases reliability and reduces uncertainty in open pit mining operations by customizing the local 3D digital mining map, constructing the truck 3D models, tracking vehicles in real time using a 3D interface and indicating available escape routes for driver safety.

"Synvolcanic structures played a fundamental role in the genesis, morphology, and siting of volcanogenic massive sulfide ores and associated hydrothermal alteration in the Archean South Sturgeon Lake caldera complex. The most voluminous and persistent hydrothermal venting and massive sulfide deposition occurred along synvolcanic rifts and grabens associated with faults and tectonic fissures that created permeable fracture zones deep enough to access the underlying hydrothermal reservoir. The type of fracturing is highly variable and changes with the composition, competency, degree of consolidation, and alteration of host rocks. Synvolcanic structures and fracture styles also vary according to the amount and type of tectonic movement, including extension-related collapse, shearing and faulting perpendicular to the principal direction of extension, and orthogonal faulting and shearing. Permeable conduits were created by tension fracturing along fault zones, brittle deformation at the intersections of orthogonal faults, and by extensional fractures in stockworks. In texturally uniform footwall rocks, the distribution of alteration zones was controlled by the morphology of the structural conduit. In rocks with vertical and/or lateral facies, permeability, and competency changes (e.g., Lyon Lake graben), there was an additional stratigraphic control over fluid migration. Some crosscutting synvolcanic structures, alteration zones, and intrusions appear as stratiform units at the present erosion surface due to regional deformation and the present attitude of the volcanic stratigraphy.Hydrothermal mineral assemblages (e.g., quartz, carbonates, chlorite, pyrite, chalcopyrite) infilling structurally induced fractures provide good evidence of fluid migration pathways. However, mineralogy can vary significantly according to the fluid characteristics, host rock geochemistry, and subsequent metamorphic history of the area.Clearly, one of the best methods for locating volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits is to delineate the attitudes of synvolcanic structures, and explore those that show evidence of associated high-temperature hydrothermal mineral assemblages. Excellent exploration targets occur where synvolcanic structures with hydrothermal alteration intersect paleo-seafloor horizons."

"The worldwide demand of ores and the depletion of the high-purity deposits make it necessary to recover ores in increasingly finer size fractions in the feed material. The flotation technology of more than 40 years old plants was not able to recover the ultra fine material. Those slurry tailings ponds now have the chance to be re-processed with PNEUFLOT® technology.The bubble sizes of different flotation technologies have a huge influence of the results especially regarding the recovery of the ultra fine particle sizes.PNEUFLOT® technology of HUMBOLDT WEDAG Coal & Minerals Technology GmbH in Germany was applied to ultra fine Phosphate, Copper and Platinum ores. The results will be presented in this paper.Conventional technology like agitator flotation has its limits in the flotation of fines due to turbulences in the cell. The position of the agitator influences the recovery of the fines. A deep impeller generates a higher froth zone. This helps to catch the medium fines. Due to the static head of the slurry inside the cell, compressed air is required for such cell designs.Column flotation is well known for a good selectivity without having in the first cell a good recovery. This leads to invest in several cleaning stages to reach an acceptable recovery. Further more, compressed air is required to generate the air bubbles to the flotation process, which are much bigger than with PNEUFLOT® technology applied.INTRODUCTIONHigh metal prices are actually the basis to invest in poor deposits or deposits with very fine intergrown ores which have to be milled down to ultra fine powders less than 60 micron. The liberation grade has to be determined by a mineralogical analysis. Polish sections have to be prepared and interpreted by using of a microscope. Figure 1 and figure 2 are showing polish sections of a platinum-nickel ore from Petchenga Nickel at Zapolyarni Mine in Russia. The head grades for rich ore are for copper between 0.05 – 0.15%, for nickel between 3 – 7% and for platinum group minerals approx. 0.15 oz/t. With an efficient flotation technology it can be upgraded to 20 oz/t."

"Greenhouse gas emissions—specifically of carbon dioxide—are a concern in Canada, where industrial sectors such as mining are stringently regulated for carbon release. Cumulative emissions are positively related to fuel consumption, which is controlled by several factors. This study investigates one of these factors: the product of vehicle speed and running surface total resistance (TR; sum of rolling resistance and grade resistance). Results show that TR directly affects fuel consumption and emissions—a relationship that is mathematically predictable. Fuel consumption and emissions, which are principally associated with the durability or deterioration of wearing course materials, were analyzed to aid selection of road construction capping material of low rolling resistance. In the oil sands region in the province of Alberta, ground conditions change seasonally. Therefore, the annual fuel consumption for the same wearing course material was also compared. Results demonstrated that haul truck size was a contributing factor, but vehicle speed and TR more strongly influenced fuel consumption and emissions. ¦ KEYWORDS Carbon dioxide, Emissions, Fuel consumption, Grade resistance (GR), Greenhouse gas (GHG), Haul truck, Rolling resistance (RR), Total resistance (TR) RÉSUMÉ Les émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES), et particulièrement celles de dioxyde de carbone, sont un problème au Canada, où les secteurs industriels tels que l’exploitation minière sont rigoureusement réglementés pour leurs émissions de carbone. Les émissions cumulées sont indéniablement en lien avec la consommation de carburant, qui est contrôlée par plusieurs facteurs. Cette étude examine l’un de ces facteurs, à savoir le produit de la vitesse du véhicule et de la résistance totale de la surface de roulement (la résistance totale, ou RT, est la somme de la résistance au roulement et de la résistance due aux rampes). Les résultats montrent que la RT affecte directement la consommation de carburant et les émissions, un lien qui est mathématiquement prévisible. La consommation de carburant et les émissions, qui sont principalement associées à la durabilité ou la détérioration des matériaux composant la couche d’usure, ont été analysées afin de contribuer à la sélection de matériau de recouvrement pour la construction de routes ayant une faible résistance au roulement. Dans la région des sables bitumineux de l’Alberta, les conditions au niveau du sol changent à chaque saison. Ainsi, la consommation annuelle de carburant pour le même matériau composant la couche d’usure a aussi été comparée. Pres-sure on world leaders to quickly reduce their carbon footprint is prevalent, prompting new standards and regulations in various industries, including mining and oil and gas. In 2017, the Government of Alberta implemented a carbon tax. The majority of mining activities in this province are truck-shovel operations, where a large fleet of ultra-class trucks is loaded by shovels. Ultra-class haul trucks, classified as those with a capacity of 218–363 tonnes (t), emit high levels of carbon as they travel to processing entry points and waste dumps as designated by the mine plan and mine dispatcher. Mined ore and waste is typically moved over two 12-hour shifts per day throughout the year."

"Dewatering of nickel concentrate at the INCO Thompson integrated mine-metallurgical site takes place within the smelter plant. The eight original 60 foot diameter cable torque thickeners of which four were operational and eight Dorrco internal drum filters have been replaced with a single Outokumpu high rate thickener and a single Lasta pressure filter. The modernization has resulted in a filter cake which has a more stable and lower moisture content. Control of the entire dewatering process has been improved and costs have been reduced.Typical filter cake produced from the Dorrco filters during processing of high tonnages of Birchtree mine ore was ~20% moisture vs. ~13% moisture for concentrate produced from the Thompson mine ore. The high moistures were correlated with the amount of fine magnesium silicate gangue in the concentrate. As Birchtree ore processing rates have increased, this filter cake moisture became unacceptable because of material handling problems and the impact on furnace metallurgy. The Dorrco filters were replaced with the Lasta filter in 2003 that has consistently produced filter cake at ~11% moisture.This paper summarizes the piloting, design, installation and commissioning of the modernized dewatering circuit.INTRODUCTIONThe Thompson integrated nickel processing facility was built in 1958 and originally consisted of a mine-mill-smelter and, soon after, a refinery.Nickel concentrate is pumped from the mill as a dilute slurry directly to the smelter facility ~200 meters along an unheated pipe trestle. It is hypothesized that the standard approach adopted to characterize the ground and to determine the rock strength properties at depth are flawed and generally tend to underestimate the rock strength and possibly the stiffness, particularly when the rock mass is characterized as massive to moderately jointed or blocky to very blocky. It is therefore necessary to conclusively established that the hypothesis, that the rock strength in highly confined rocks is greater than generally anticipated, is actually valid and generally applicable, and then to develop new procedures to establish rock parameters that can be reliably used for the design of deep excavation.

What follows is a brief introduction to the Atara Corporation and the fundamentals of how an Atara ""cannon"" mixer operates. The main body of the paper is concerned with the results of a study to evaluate the cannon mixer for a gold cvanide leach application. A brief summary of research and testing for other metallurgical applications is also presented.1. 1 THE COMPANYThe Atara Corporation is a privately owned Canadian company, headquarted in Dorval, Quebec. Its subsidiary, Atara Incorporated, located in Paramus, New Jersey services the municipal wastewater treatment market in the United States. Dorval focuses on industrial mixing applications in Canada and the US. The Atara Corporation provides design, engineering and specifications of agitators for mineral land other) processing applications. Fabrication of mixers is pursued in either Canada or the US, depending on the ultimate destination.Although Atara and its unique static in-tank mixer are relative newcomers to the mining industry, the cannon mixer has demonstrated its value over the past 20 years in municipal wastewater treatment services. In the past four years the Atara unit has been developed for industrial applications; the bulk of the development work has been for metallurgical applications. Hydrogen fuel cells are a known technology, having been applied to stationary (e.g. equipment, buildings, and power plants) and vehicle applications (e.g. transit buses and space shuttles). There is currently a growing need to provide alternate power systems to diesel fuel for underground mining vehicles to improve underground air quality and reduce production costs and greenhouse gas emissions. To date, however, fuel cells have not been exposed to underground mine air and physical conditions. A testing program was carried out to provide information on the vulnerabilities of fuel cells as part of a number of proof-of-concept projects to apply hydrogen power to underground mining vehicles. The fuel cell type of choice for the industry, the proton exchange membrane, would function at the range of surface operations, and use hydrogen that is stored under low pressure and risk. A small fuel cell stack was tested in a cooperative project between CANMET, the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute, Inco, the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Sandia National laboratories, and H-Power. This article will review the tests carried out to measure the effects from high humidity, mineral dust, diesel emission gasses and diesel particulate matter, as well as from shock and vibration provided to the unit in underground conditions at Inco?s 175 Orebody minesite and Stobie mine. The test results provided will show that the unit was not affected by the underground conditions; physically and electrically, the unit performed without any reduction in operation or adverse effects imposed

"Production commenced at the Golden Sunlight Mine in 1983 and at Kidston Gold Mine in 1985. These projects were both constructed under the management of the Placer Dome Inc. (Technical Services) group of Vancouver, B.C.Golden Sunlight uses a conventional rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit while Kidston uses a SAG /ball mill, and later on, SABC circuit. Since the hardness of the ore and the fineness of the primary grind in both mines are about the same, a meaningful cost comparison can be made. The comparison is made on the basis of capital and operating costs.The result of this study indicates that a significant capital cost savings can be achieved in favour of the SAG /ball mill circuit when the ore is amenable to semi-autogenous grinding. With a good maintenance program, the operating cost for the SAG /ball mill circuit could also be lower that the conventional rod mill/ball mill circuit.HISTORYGolden Sunlight MineGolden Sunlight is a 5 530 t/d gold mine located near Whitehall, a small town 60 km east of Butte, Montana. Originally optioned by PDI U.S. in 1958, the development of the property waited until 1981 when economic conditions became favorable for the project to proceed.Semiautogenous grinding tests were conducted during the final stages of the feasibility study. The hard near surface ore was not quite amenable to semi-autogenous grinding. The best result produced from a series of tests using a 1.83 m diameter mill was a semiautogenous work index of 39. This is substantially higher than the 22 Bond work index of the sample used in the testwork. A conventional SAG/ball mill circuit for this ore will be extremely inefficient, and for this reason, this circuit was rejected in favour of a conventional rod mill/ball mill circuit."

"Tulawaka Mine is a joint venture between Pangea Minerals Limited 70% (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation) and Northern Mining 30%. Tulawaka Mine is located in North West of Tanzania in the Lake Victoria Goldfields. Tulawaka Mine is scheduled to process 360,000 tonnes per year at an average 11.5 g/t head grade over a 4 year mine life.The Tulawaka Process Plant uses single stage crushing, single stage SAG milling, gravity, intensive leach of gravity concentrates, CIL, Zadra desorption and cyanide detoxification to process the ore. Gold recovery exceeds (or is expected to) 95%.The Process Plant was designed and constructed under the supervision of Ausenco Engineering of Australia. Site works commenced in January 2004, Process Plant construction commenced in July 2004 and the first ore was presented to the Process Plant 26th February 2005. The first gold was poured on 15th March 2005. All construction contractors were demobilized from site 7th April 2005. Major achievements have been 3.4 million hrs LTI free during construction and operation to date, training of the Tanzanian workforce at Bulyanhulu Mine prior to commissioning, a succession plan to replace expatriate personnel with Tanzanian staff and significant over performance of the Process Plant against design.INTRODUCTIONTulawaka Mine is situated approximately 160 km south west of Mwanza in the western Lake Victoria Goldfields District of north western Tanzania.
