As part of a general review on study of surfactant blinding agents to improve gold recovery during cyanide leaching of carbonaceous gold ores, processes of CIL and RIL leaching using surfactants were investigated. When refractory ores were treated by surfactants, CIL and RIL leaching processes yielded significant improvement on gold recovery. This paper will discuss and compare the laboratory results from two different leaching processes on preg-robbing ores, as well as, illustrate the difference of potential fouling of the blinding agents on activated carbon and resins.

Mining operators are faced with complex information delivered by technology-centric rather than user-centric systems. The ability to achieve high situation awareness (SA) in the face of this data overload is a key challenge for effective decision making and information exploitation. Incidents that result in loss of revenue and even life, and compromise safety that are attributed to human error are often the result of system designs that overload human cognitive capabilities. This paper focuses on defining SA as it relates to mining operations and presents methods for improving SA through a scientific approach for electric shovel operator user interface development.

"The benefits of modern technology can readily be identified with energy availability. A clear correlation has been established between per-capita energy consumption and the GNP for various nations. The United States is an outstanding example of a nation which has benefited from vast energy reserves. The nation is now challenged, how¬ever, by dwindling reserves and the need to develop new sources consistent with the preservation of environmental quality. The development of new, virtually inexhaustible and environmentally acceptable sources cannot be expected for several decades. Meanwhile, we will have to depend on coal, nuclear energy and/or rigorous conservation measures.The net effect of environmental considerations has been to delay and perhaps ultimately eliminate the nuclear energy option as a national energy alternative. This forces a more positive move toward coal as the next major source of electrical power. Our coal resources are large, but the use and production of coal is also a threat to the environment. Thus, we seem to be moving from one major accessible source to another due to environmental concern only to face the probability that the alternative is also environ¬mentally unacceptable.Controversies revolving about energy choices must be resolved by an analysis of the relative benefits and impacts of these two sources and others. The pattern of changing energy sources is not new. We have moved from wood to coal to oil and gas in the past and must learn to adapt in the future. Rational decisions must be made relative to the utilization of intermediate energy sources pending development of promising future approaches. A collapse of current levels of energy supply could threaten our technological society and the means to develop a new energy base."

The primary purpose of ore hauling model studies is to capture the variability of the ore delivery ? stockpiling process in order to improve the estimation of equipment capacities and achievable throughputs. The operation of a mine-to-site ore delivery system is the subject of a number of challenges. Typically, ore is hauled by a given combination of trucks, conveyors and trains. In addition, ore loading, ore transferring to another means of delivery, stockpiling, reclaiming, and further deliveries involve many other types of equipment. The concurrent operation of all these units is scheduled; nevertheless, they are subject to planned maintenance and random breakdowns. To support our engineering design work on ore hauling operation, discrete event type models were built for each specific task. Then, due to recurring demands, an ore hauling library was gradually compiled. The now available model library allows fast and efficient simulation of various mine-to-site hauling arrangement, adaptable to various mining and mine construction operations (e.g. bauxite, iron ore, copper ore and coal).

"The influence mechanism of chlorite on the flotation of pyrrhotite was investigated through flotation tests, Zeta potential measurements, optical microscope photos, solution ion measurements and absorption measurements. It is observed that, the addition of chlorite influences the flotation of pyrrhotite seriously. The IEP (isoelectric point) of pyrrhotite and chlorite is 7.6 and 4.3 respectively, in the condition of slight alkalinity, both pyrrhotite and chlorite are negatively charged, and the hetero-aggregation will not occur. With the existence of oxygen in solution, the iron ions are dissolved from pyrrhotite surface because of the oxidation of pyrrhotite during pulp conditioning. The dissolved iron ions adsorb onto the surface of chlorite in the forms of iron hydroxyl and iron hydroxide, and the adsorption results in the opposite charge of chlorite surface. As a result, the hetero-aggregation between pyrrhotite and chlorite occurs. The adsorption of chlorite changes the surface property of pyrrhotite and restricts the adsorption of amyl xanthate onto pyrrhotite surface, and then decreases the flotability of pyrrhotite.INTRODUCTIONIn sulfide ores processing, magnesium silicate bearing gangue minerals often report to the concentrate causing downstream processing problems as well as increased smelting costs. Talc,chlorite and serpentine are gangue minerals commonly encountered in complex sulfide ores (Engel, Middlebrook, & Jameson, 1997; Pietrobon et al., 1997; Witney & Yan, 1997; Chen, Grano, Sobieraj, & Ralston, 1999a, 1999b; Bremmell, Fornasiero & Ralston, 2005; Senior & Thomas, 2005; Wang, Somasundaran, & Nagaraj, 2005; WieseHarris & Bradshaw, 2007). All of them are characterized with uniform crystal structures consisting of silicon-oxygen tetrahedron and magnesium-oxygen octahedron. The magnesium-oxygen octahedron layers are broken during the liberation of serpentine to expose the magnesium-oxygen bonds with strong ionicity and hydration, which results in natural hydrophilicity of serpentine. In water, the hydroxyl on serpentine surface ruptures and dissolves into the aqueous phase while the Mg2+ remains, resulting in surface positive charge (Tao, 2012). As serpentine has a positive potential at alkaline condition, it is therefore likely that it will attach through electrostatic attraction to the negatively charged mineral surface and reduce both the flotation rate and recovery of target minerals (Lu et al., 2011). For talc, characterized as good natural hydrophobicity, the liberation comes from the interlaminar fracture to remain molecular bonds on surface with weak hydration. Being naturally hydrophobic, talc easily reports to flotation concentrates, thus reducing concentrate grade (Shortridge, Harris, Bradshaw, & Koopal, 2000; Beattie, Huynh, Kaggwa, & Ralston, 2006). Meanwhile, both molecular bonds and magnesium-oxygen bonds are exposed on chlorite surface when liberation occurs, resulting in moderate natural hydrophobicity between serpentine and talc (Tao, 2012). And thus the mechanisms of influence of chlorite on sulfide ores are more difficult to study."

"Mining properties are becoming increasingly remote, a challenging situation for operating and maintaining equipment. Logistics of transporting workers and materials can be alleviated by having timely, accurate information of equipment location and operating condition, and by automating some activities. This paper discusses an infrastructure for remote operations, with strategies for communicating different types of data, and a design method so that systems can interact with either an operator or another system. A remotely operated excavator prototype is described, with on-board performance and diagnostic monitoring systems now used on production equipment. IntroductionSyncrude Canada Ltd. operates an openpit oil sands mine near Fort McMurray, Alberta. For twenty years, draglines and bucketwheel reclaimers have fed conveyors that transport dry oil sand to an extraction and upgrading plant. In converting to a truck and shovel operation, Syncrude has developed slurry pipelines and bitumen froth pumping to allow more remote leases to be mined more than 30 km from the base plant.There are organizational and resourcing challenges in operating and maintaining equipment in three nearby, but separate, mines. The logistics of transporting workers and materials to production and support equipment become more difficult, and operations and maintenance personnel and facilities become more distributed. Supervising mine operations will rely even more on having timely, accurate information about equipment location and operational status.Syncrude is typical of an open-pit operation. Voice communications are the preferred way to exchange information for making immediate decisions about operations and maintenance. A large number of narrowband FM broadcast radio channels keep teams of miners working together. Haul truck drivers, shovel operators, and dispatchers talk on one channel while maintainers coordinate activities with the control tower on another. Cellular phones have become popular for supervisors who have to talk with planners and engineers in offices without radios."

"The copper-molybdenum property of Brenda Mines Limited is located in the Okanagan district of British Columbia, approximately 25 miles west of Kelowna. The Okanagan Valley is a resort and fruit-growing area, and therefore pollution control measures are more stringent than in some remote areas.The Brenda plant began production in April 1970 and is operated at a rate of 24,000 tons per day. The plant site is located at an elevation of 4,800 feet, which is approximately 3,600 feet above the level of Okanagan Lake. The site is in the Okanagan drainage basin.The major consideration in the design of the system was the prohibition of any downstream discharge. It was therefore necessary to redaim as much water as possible and to minimize the addition of fresh water to the system. The maintenance of a water balance is of critical importance.This paper will outline the major design criteria for the systems and the site investigations which were carried out. The design and construction of the facilities will be de-scribed and current operating experience will be outlined."

I fully recognize that I am so honoured as a symbol of the combination of American and Canadian leaders in industry who are partners in the sponsor-ship of the Quebec-Labrador iron-ore mining development which we are undertaking, and as such I want to express our great appreciation of the co-operation and assistance we have met on every hand in Canada, and the genuine friendliness and never-failing courtesy which we are always accorded. We are quite aware that it springs primarily from the very high regard in which our partner and sponsor, Jules Timmins, and our other Canadian associates are held. Their high standing among you is well known and we quite naturally fall heir to the benefits of the great esteem in which you hold them. Jules Timmins and his long-time associate, John Knox, were the original inspiration for our participation in this venture. It was their enthusiasm and vision which caught our interest and led to our joining with them in the years of exploration and search which have brought us to the threshold of this great development where we stand today. So much has been written of the details of our exploration and plans for future development that it would bore you for me to review them further here, but there is a phase of this development, and an extremely important phase of it, which I think has passed almost unnoticed and which it may be well worth while for me to bring to your attention this evening.

Model reconciliation problems at the low-grade, high-nugget Phoenix gold-copper deposit led to an examination of the influence of production decisions on ore-waste classification. A conditional simulation study of the deposit was used as the basis for: 1) quantification of dilution at different bench heights, 2) quantification of ore-waste misclassification relative to bench heights and cut-off wades, and 3) determination of an appropriate number of samples to optimize ore-control polygon definition. Actual reconciliation data were empirically used to support conclusions. Simulations of both gold and copper were combined through net revenue modelling. These simulations increased understanding of the nature of the deposit and provided insight for resource modeling and mine planning.

An innovative mixed-chloride process for the separation of iron from lateritic ore is described. The separation of Fe(III) from leach liquor is an important process step for the recovery of nickel and cobalt. The patented process of Process Research ORTECH Inc. uses a lixiviant containing hydrochloric acid (HCl) and magnesium chloride (MgCl2) for the leaching of lateritic ores/concentrates followed by the selective solvent extraction step of Fe(III) over other value metals such as Ni and Co. The use of MgCl2 increases the activity of the hydrogen ion in the lixiviant, which reduces the consumption of HCl in the leaching stage and enhances the formation of HFeCl4-, thereby increasing the solvent extraction efficiency of Fe(III) with ketone. The process produces high purity iron oxide (Fe2O3) and regenerates HCl by the pyrohydrolysis of the FeCl3 rich pregnant strip solution. The developed process flowsheet is in closed loop, economically attractive and environmentally friendly.

"Most of the lode and placer gold production in the Canadian Cordillera has been derived from mines and placers in the Intermontane and Omineca belts. Gold has been produced from rocks of Precambrian to Eocene age, but the preferred host environment contains Upper Paleozoic to Upper Jurassic eugeosynclinal or arc-type sedimentary and volcanic rocks adjacent to plutonic complexes which have a wide variety in both size and composition. Auriferous quartz lodes occur in fissures and shear zones which are commonly subsidiary to strong fault zones. In common with most vein-type deposits, structural complexities are an essential part of the mine environment.Gold production from the Canadian Cordillera to the end of 1978 totals 35.0 million ounces, of which 47 per cent has been produced from placer mining, principally in the Klondike and Cariboo districts. The balance has been derived from lode gold (80 per cent) and base metal (20 per cent) mines.Gold reserves in producing mines and deposits committed for production as of January 1, 1978 were 87.4 tons, or 21.6 per cent of total Canadian gold reserves contained in all types of deposits. Although more than 100 lode mines have operated in the Canadian Cordillera since the turn of the last century, over 75 per cent of the lode gold produced by 1978 was recovered from five mining camps, namely the Rossland, Hedley, Bridge River, Premier and Barkerville.The average grade of the principal producers in these camps was about 0.45 ounce of gold per ton. Individual camps yielded from 3 to 8 million tons during their operating lives, which varied from 28 to 43 years. The last of these mines ceased operating in 1971.Most of the total lode gold production has been derived from quartz veins, frequently with associated carbonate and ankerite, occupying fractured and faulted zones in Mesozoic volcanic and sedimentary rocks closely associated with a variety of intrusions. A review of the literature suggests that several deposits may have evolved by remobilization of ore constituents from earlier concordant gold-bearing formations. The principal metallic minerals in the deposits are native gold, electrum, tellurides, pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite.As the mineralogy suggests, many of the Cordilleran lode gold deposits have yielded important co-products or byproducts, including silver, copper, lead, zinc, cadmium and tungsten. Significant by-product gold production has also been derived from porphyry copper, volcanogenic, replacement and pyrometasomatic deposits, particularly in recent years.No major lode gold discovery has been made in the past 67 years, although little exploration activity for gold has taken place during the last 30 years. Several relatively small lode gold and gold replacement deposits have been discovered in recent years, either serendipitously (Chappelle) or on very low initial budgets (Northair and Carolin). Based on well-established precedents, one or more of these may eventually be developed into a large mine.A detailed study of the Canadian Cordillera gold deposits based on recent genetic models could prove rewarding, not only in up-dating information on their origin and depositional characteristics, but in stimulating the search for undiscovered gold deposits, in the Cordillera and other parts of Canada."

ONE OF the major sources of the world's supply of asbestos lies in a belt of ultrabasic rocks stretching through the Eastern Townships of Quebec where chrysotile asbestos has been mined continuously since 1878. The productive portion of the belt extends from the town of Asbestos in Shipton town-ship northeastward some 60 miles to the eastern edge of Broughton town-ship. (See map). Twelve mines, currently treating an aggregate of over 60,000 tons of rock daily, produce more than one million tons of asbestos :annually. An equal number of mines are now dormant, having for the most part exhausted their reserves. It is evident from the past and present activity, in this belt that it can look forward to at least half a century or more of large scale production. In 1997, damage as a result of Castrol R40 entering the INCO pressure carbonyl plant carrier gas stream was becoming increasingly severe. The oil in the gas stream was adversely affecting both equipment availability and process control resulting in rising unit costs. The main source of the Castrol R40 was determined to be the carrier gas and low pressure gas blowers. Plant personnel initiated a plan to prevent the Castrol R40 from entering the carrier gas stream by replacing the mechanical shaft seals with Ferrofluidics seals on these blowers. The following paper details a brief case history of the Castrol R40 in the carrier gas including impact on the plant. This will be followed by a technical discussion of the new sealing arrangement that was developed by plant personnel, Roots Blower and Ferrofluidics. Lastly, this paper will update the status of the blower upgrade project and document the results to date.

Considerable number of methods and procedures has been introduced for trending and progress reporting of engineering, procurement and construction projects. This paper introduces a novel method, designed to augment the set of indices for measuring schedule performance. The concept behind the developed method is to provide early warning by dynamically evaluating the schedule cumulative impact of construction projects. The proposed method is designed to highlight the gradual deterioration in schedule status resulting in a cumulative impact due to the aggregation of small delays encountered during the execution of non-critical activities, and can be used as an add-on utility to existing software systems that perform CPM scheduling. The proposed method is based on a developed formulation for quantification of the Schedule Compression Index, which takes into consideration the remaining project activities durations. The index is developed based on periodic comparisons of ?Current Schedules? and the project ?Baseline Schedule? using the summation of the remaining activities durations. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate the application and capabilities of the developed method. It is expected that the developed index together with other schedule performance indices would be of value to decision makers and members of project teams.

There is increasing use of acid leach extraction methods at elevated temperatures and pressures by the mining industry. In many locations there are limited supplies of fresh water, and waters with higher chloride contents must be used, making conditions more corrosive. The fluids downstream of the main autoclave are hot, acidic, oxidizing and contain chlorides and present a challenge to the mining community to ensure reliable operation. Zeron 100 is a high strength superduplex stainless stee, that offers high corrosion resistance at a cost effective price. The paper presents a combination of laboratory data and service experience, particularly in the aggressive fluids found in downstream processing.

More than a decade ago, CANMET management recognized the need to make better use of existing technological information in mining and extractive metallurgy-two fields basic to the economic well-being of Canada. There were at that time no indexes or files dedicated to disseminating technical information for the many minerals mined and processed in Canada, including coal. CANMET, with the nation's largest research and library resources in the minerals field, was in a unique position to fill this need. Initial efforts were concentrated on building a mining file, beginning with identification of world sources of published information, development of a special thesaurus of terms for language control and adoption of a manual indexing/retrieval system. By early 1973, this file held 8,300 references, with source, abstract and keywords given for each reference. In mid-1973, operations were computerized. Software for indexing and retrieval by batch mode was written by CANMET staff to utilize the hardware facilities of EMR's Computer Science Centre. The resulting MINTEC file-one of the few files of technological information produced in Canada-is the basis for the national literature search service in mining offered by CANMET. Attention is now focussed on building a sister-file in extractive metallurgy using the system already developed. Published information sources have been identified and a thesaurus of terms is being compiled and tested. The software developed for CANMET's file-building operations has several features, including the selective dissemination of information and production from magnetic tape of photo ready copy for publication, as in a bi-monthly abstracts journal.

Jinlong copper smelter and refinery, originally designed for 100,000tpa primary copper and started up in 1997, has been expanding its capacity on the basis of operational optimization and by modifying its facilities. Currently it is producing 210,000tpa primary copper, and the new phase of expansion project with a target capacity of 350,000tpa primary copper is ongoing. This paper reviews problems and improvements made with operation and equipment in the past years. Recent plant operation is briefly described. The expansion projects completed are summarized and the ongoing expansion project is present.

"Extruded aluminum profiles are increasingly used for lightweight vehicle construction. Since fracture strains of aluminum profiles are relatively low, damage modeling is crucial for reliable crash simulation. For aluminum profiles, not only the stress state but also the orientation influenced both the deformation and damage behavior. For the material characterization smooth tensile tests were performed in six orientations, both stress-strain curves and r-values were registered. Moreover notched tensile and shear-tension tests were performed in three directions. Finally punch specimens were tested to investigate biaxial loading. Digital image correlation (DIC) analyses were performed to determine local strain values such as critical values at failure. Numerical investigations were conducted with the strain based damage model GISSMO, which is well suited and widely applied for crash simulation. For a strain based failure model the choice of the deformation model is crucial. Deformation models with increasing complexity were investigated to find the best compromise over all experiments. It was found that there is still a great requirement on development of a material model which describes the orientation dependence of the hardening behavior over all stress states in order to be able to use a strain based failure model reliably.INTRODUCTION Weight reduction is an important step for less energy consumption and as a consequence aluminium is increasingly used in automotive parts. An important field of application is the well-established aluminium extrusion which allows the realisation of quite complex shapes of profiles required for an innovative lightweight design with integrated functions. Typical applications are chassis parts, bumpers, crash elements, air bags, etc. Especially the Al–Mg–Si medium strength alloys of the 6000 series can be easily extruded to form complex profiles and prevail for extrusion. Since fracture strains of aluminum profiles are relatively low, damage modeling is crucial for reliable crash simulation. For aluminum profiles not only the influence of the stress state but also the orientation with respect to the extrusion direction have an influence on both the deformation and damage behavior and need to be characterized. The effect of orientation on deformation behavior has been intensively investigated in the last decades and material models haves been proposed (e.g. Barlat & Lian, 1989; Barlat, Lege, & Brem, 1991; Barlat et al., 2003) to describe accurately anisotropic behavior. However it can be noticed that the parameters of anisotropic material models often rely on the yield stress in different directions, which means that the effect of strain hardening is not automatically accounted for. The accuracy of the models at large deformation is not guaranteed and has to be verified. In contrast to deformation models both the characterisation and the modeling of anisotropic damage behavior are not systematically studied. Isotropic failure models based on a critical strain as function of stress triaxiality (ratio of the hydrostatic stress to von Mises equivalent stress) are widely used for crash application (e.g., Bai & Wierzbicki, 2010; Sun, Andrieux & Feucht, 2009; Sun et al., 2013). The mechanisms of failure are manifold and not fully understood; to develop an anisotropic failure model it is mandatory to also have experimental data in different orientations for loading scenarios other than uniaxial tension, e. g. shear, biaxial tension, which implies an extensive experiment plan. This makes the development of failure models more challenging than deformation models for which it is possible to develop a reasonable anisotropic model using the framework of yield function and calibrate the material parameters based on results of tensile tests in different directions.
