LAKE Shore Mines, Limited, with property at Kirkland. Lake, Ontario, was incorporated m 1914 and commenced product10n m March, 1918, with an initial capacity of about 60 tons per day. Since that time a gradual expansion has taken place until a present capacity of approximately 2,300 tons per day has been reached, giving a total annual gold production valued at approximately $16,000,000. At the time of incorporation of the Company, the Lake Shore property consisted of four mineral claims and four fractions, totalling 171.05 acres. In 1934, four claims belonging to the Minaker Kirkland Gold Mines, Limited, were acquired and a controlling interest purchased in the Kirkland Hudson Bay Gold Mines, Limited. Both these properties adjoin the Lake Shore claims on the south. From the accompanying compilation of the world's largest gold mines for 1934 (1), it will be seen that, while Lake Shore holds sixth position in respect to the number of ounces produced, there are twenty-five gold mines which treat a greater tonnage of ore. This is an indication of probably the most unusual feature of the Kirkland Lake deposits, namely, the high aver-age tenor of the ores. coupled with the comparatively large tonnages available.

THE Eastern Townships of Quebec have been the chief Canadian source of chromite. Production, however, has never been large and, except for a period of steady but small output between 1894 and 1909, mining has been active only in war time. The known deposits are too small or too low grade to compete with overseas sources in normal times. During the last war, shipping difficulties and a greatly increased demand in the United States resulted in high prices and a ready market for low-.grade material. The Quebec chromite industry flourished and played an important part in relieving the wartime shortage. Shipments in 1918 .amounted to 15,600 tons of crude ore and 6,400 tons of concentrates. At the outbreak of the present war it was natural to turn again to the Quebec field as a possible source of this strategic mineral. Some of the old properties have since been opened by private and government money and some new deposits have been found. Total mill capacity is 750 tons per day, as compared with 200 to 300 tons in 1918. During 1940, 1941, and 1942, about 85 chromite deposits were examined by the Geological Survey in a belt 100 miles long and up to 7 miles wide. A part of this belt, about 35 miles long, in which the geological features ?were not well known, was mapped on a scale of 1/2; mile to an inch.? Small ..areas around some of the deposits were mapped in detail, on scales of 20 to 200 feet to an inch. Some geophysical work was done but did not result in the discovery of ore. Prospecting by stripping and trenching was then undertaken and chromite ore was uncovered at several localities. The above work was done by the writer and by J. W. Ambrose, who has kindly contributed his results for incorporation in this paper. Y. O. Introduction It is the purpose of this paper to discuss a number of the metallurgical improvements in the technology of copper-nickel ore treatment which have been introduced during recent years in the plants of ?the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited. In common with other ore treatment processes, the procedure for extracting nickel and copper is changing almost continuous! y. These changes are necessitated by reason of changes in ore grades and characteristics, rising material and labour charges, and the constant drive to maximize metal recovery and to minimize production costs. It is not possible to present a comprehensive list of all the changes made, and only a selected number of the improvements in the milling, smelting, and refining operations are covered. It should be clearly understood that some phases of the procedures described have been pioneered by others in kindred fields and due acknowledgment is given to their foresight and efforts. Articles have been published over the years describing the operations of the International Nickel Company plants and the reader is referred to the Engineering and Mining Journal, Vol. 130, No. 9, November 10th, 1930, and to the Canadian Mining Journal, Vol. 58, No. 11, November, 1937, and Vol. 67, No. 5, May, 1946. "A comparison between hydrogen-diffusion-based micro-porosity formation and growth behaviour of two important aluminium foundry alloys, B206 (Al-Cu) and A356 (Al-Si-Mg) is presented in this paper. Specifically, the predicted pore size and pore fraction distribution of these two alloys resulting from directional solidification and identical hydrogen concentration are investigated numerically based on a model proposed by Yao et al. (2011. Met. & Mat. Tran. A. 42A, 4137–4148). This model takes into consideration the initial hydrogen content in the melt, the cooling rate, the partitioning of hydrogen between the solid and liquid phases, and the evolution in solid fraction with temperature. Due to different alloy chemistries, the activity of hydrogen in B206 and A356 are quite different, as are the solidification range and the resulting solidification microstructure. Being a primary alloy, B206 has dendritic microstructure and solidifies over nearly 135°C (505–641°C), whereas A356 contains fifty percent eutectic microstructure, and solidifies over 80°C (533–613°C). This allows a very different behaviour of micropores i.e. the effective pore radius in B206 is quite a bit lower as compared to A356, as is the pore number density. The evolution of local hydrogen concentration in liquid metal is analysed and compared for both the alloys.INTRODUCTION Over the past decades, the demand for materials with enhanced strength-to-weight ratios has significantly increased in the aerospace and automobile industries in order to improved fuel efficiency. For many automotive components, particularly shape castings, the trend is towards replacing ferrous alloys with aluminium alloys. The increase in the use of Al is primarily due to its low density, about one-third that of steel, and its relatively good strength that allows for weight reduction without reducing performance. Presently, Al-Si based alloys (e.g. A356) are the most prevalent due to their good mechanical performance in strength-to-weight ratio and excellent castability (Atwood et.al., 2000). However, superior mechanical properties can be achieved using Al-Cu alloys. For example, the alloy B206 offers a higher strength while retaining excellent ductility (Poirier et.al., 1987)."

The extraction of gold and silver has been examined via the use of mixed halogens: chlorine and bromine. The reaction was performed in a brine of sodium chloride with a small amount of sodium bromide at 40-50°C, in an atmosphere of chlorine, at atmospheric pressure. The process takes advantage of the very high reactivity of bromine towards gold, while the higher oxidation capacity of chlorine leads to gold chloride as end product with recycling of bromine. Fast reaction rates are observed along with gold recovery at the level of 95%. Chlorine-consuming common elements are removed prior to chlorination.

"More than a dozen AEM systems are currently being used in the routine exploration for massive sulphides. The systems differ from one another in minor respects, but fall into four main categories: rigid-coupled in-phase/quadrature systems; towed-bird, single-component systems; differential systems; and passive systems.Although field tests are important in demonstrating the performance characteristics of the AEM/airframe assembly (noise-levels, coupling effects, etc.), more meaningful evaluations can be made through physical or computer modelling. The latter approach has been used to compare the response of twelve AEM systems to both vertical and horizontal sheets, simulating a large orebody and a con-ductive overburden respectively. The effects of height changes are also studied.The results demonstrate that each AEM system has its own particular advantages and disadvantages. The relative importance of these is a matter for the geophysicist to judge, on the basis of specific geological and environ-mental information. Data currently available on AEM systems are adequate to permit an objective evaluation of the systems for a particular exploration program."

"Gold losses to natural carbonaceous matter during cyanide leaching have been investigated for over a century. The variation in the severity of the problem from one ore to another has led to a range of different processes being implemented at different mine sites. Most commercial options utilise one or more of the following processes: roasting, carbon pre-flotation, organic blinding, CIL, chlorine passivation, pressure oxidation, biological passivation, elevated temperature CIL, RIL and thiosulfate. This paper provides a background to identify the most appropriate process or combination of processes for a particular ore. It also presents information on how these processes may be implemented, drawing on information in the literature and from current or recent applications at operations such as the following: Stawell, Kumtor, Penjom, Twin Creeks, Macraes Flat, Kittilä, Fosterville, Inata, Carlin, Goldstrike, and Jerritt Canyon. Various process options have been dismissed, or deemed unsuccessful due to limited knowledge available on the strengths and weaknesses of the different options and their implementation. The authors have collectively been involved in flowsheet development and project implementation in four commercial plants that have treated preg-robbing ores.INTRODUCTION Cyanide processing has been the mainstay of gold recovery for well over a century. It is generally a very effective process with over 90% recovery on free milling ores, but complex and refractory ores may only give 0–50% recovery with conventional processing (La Brooy et al., 1994). People have written about gold losses to natural carbonaceous matter during cyanidation for over a century e.g. Feldtmann, (1915). The earliest reports related to African operations, but the issue has since been reported in Canada, North and South America, Australia, Russia and China. The phenomenon is usually referred to as ‘preg-robbing’ dating from the times before the use of granular activated carbon for gold recovery, when gold was lost from the pregnant solution before it could be separated from the leach solids and recovered by cementation. Many excellent reviews have been published e.g. Dunn et al. (2013), summarising the options considered and where they have been applied commercially."

"Exposure to airborne respirable silica in surface and underground mine operations is known to be the cause of industrial lung diseases. For this reason, silica is a regulated substance and worker exposure must be monitored regularly. Diesel exhaust also contains substances which are potential caricinogens. In an underground setting, diesel particulate may be the main component of what is referred to as respirable combustible dust (ReD). Although diesel particulate or soot is not at present a rigorously regulated substance, new epidemiological data is prompting North American institutes and agencies to regulate diesel soot or RCD exposure. This paper describes a method where by silicaand RCD exposure may be determined using a single personal sample. In this method, an airborne respirable dust sample is obtained and analyzed nondestructively for silica components using an on-filter X-ray diffraction method. Filters are then ashed at 500°C in a muffle furnace over a four-hour period to determine mass loss due to RCD burning. "The processes leading to the fall of rock compartments from rock walls are poorly known as well as their velocity. It ensues that quantitative prediction of the failure time for a rock compartment which is presently stable, is not possible by a purely geomechanical approach. However a quantitative probabilistic prediction of rockfalls at the scale of a rock wall is possible if the spatial-temporal rockfall frequency can be determined or estimated (Hantz, 2011). For a better knowledge of failure processes and frequency, rockfalls have been detected in several rock walls, using annual terrestrial laser scanning, allowing comparison of the frequencies in different geological conditions. For one of these rock walls, the spatial detection have been completed by a precise dating of the events, using a quasi-continuous photographic survey (one photo every 10 mn), allowing the study of the influence of meteorological factors.The precise dating of rockfalls has been carried out for the Saint-Eynard cliff which towers above a residential area of the town of Grenoble (French Alps). The South-East facing cliff consists in bedded limestone gently dipping North-West and located at an elevation between 850 m and 1100 m. The surveyed zone is about 750 m large and 250 m high. Between 01/02/2013 and 26/11/2013, 65 rockfalls ranging between 0.01 m3 and 20 m3, have been detected by diachronic comparison of laser scanner data and dated by comparison of photographic images. The temperature at the elevation of the cliff has been calculated from the temperature measured (every 5 mn) at a meteorological station located at an elevation of 245 m and 2.5 km away from the cliff, using a temperature gradient of 0.003°C/m (D’Amato et al., 2014). The precipitation were measured 900 m away from the cliff at an elevation of 469 m. Different meteorological conditions have been defined: (a) “freeze” qualifies days with negative mean temperature (but with a thaw period, except for two days); (b) “thaw” qualifies days with positive mean temperature, but following a freeze day; (c) “rain” qualifies days with precipitation.Table 1 shows the rockfall temporal frequency for the different meteorological conditions. It appears that the frequency is about 6 times higher the freeze days, 2.5 higher the thaw days and 3 times higher the rain days than days without freeze, thaw or rain."

"Selective mining, such as post pillar cut and fill, is used in large, flat, irregularly shaped ore bodies where ground stability is to be maintained. This selective mining is used to open the stope to the full lateral extent of the ore body in order to minimize the dilution and maximise the recovery. For increased mining depth, design of the post pillar becomes more challenging since those pillars will eventually fail as mining progresses upwards. The post pillar should be designed such that failure does not occur at the early mining stage, such as at the first cut. After mining progresses upwards, the post pillars are expected to fail but be confined by backfill. In order to maximise ore recovery, both drift width and post pillar size must be designed adequately with a consideration of all geomechanic parameters. This paper will describe the process used to design post-pillar cut and fill for one of the ore bodies in Vale’s Copper Cliff Mine using a combination of both empirical deterministic and numerical modelling techniques. By utilizing both empirical deterministic and numerical modelling techniques drift width and post pillar size can be effectively designed. Current post pillar cut and fill design in the existing Vale operations are used to validate the design for Copper Cliff Mine. INTRODUCTIONCopper Cliff Mine is located within the Copper Cliff Offset in the limits of City of Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, as shown in Figure 1. The Copper Cliff Offset extends about eight kilometres south from the Sudbury Igneous Complex into the footwall rocks. Until 2008, the current Copper Cliff Mine was operated as two separate mines i.e. North Mine and South Mine. However, as part of restructuring of Vale Ontario Operations, the North and South Mines were merged in 2009 to form the “Copper Cliff Mine”."

"The susceptibility to intergranular corrosion modes is a major technical issue preventing widespread utilization of higher strength welded AA7xxx extruded beam profiles, in the peak-aged T6 condition, in automotive bumper assemblies. A study was undertaken to evaluate the relative exfoliation corrosion resistance (ASTM G85-A2) as a function of joint design parameters, namely the base alloy composition, heat-treated condition and beam orientation after exposure to a cyclic acidified salt spray test. This paper documents the major findings extracted from this study.INTRODUCTIONBumper systems play a predominant role in the passive safety of an automobile, since they are one of the main structures for absorbing the collision energy in the event of an automobile crash. Heattreatable AA6xxx-series (Al-Mg-Si) and AA7xxx-series (Al-Zn-Mg) Al alloys, with relatively high strength, toughness, energy absorption, weldability and formability, make it possible to design costcompetitive bumper systems to crush in a controlled fashion. In this context, Cu-lean AA7xxx extrusions, such as AA7003 and AA7108, which exhibit higher strength than AA6xxx extrusion, such as AA6082, represent an attractive light weight material from which to fabricate bumper assemblies (Clausen et al., 2000; Pedersen et al., 2008; Chen et al., 2009).Arc welding is a key joining process for AA7xxx alloys within the transportation industry. A major technological issue preventing widespread utilization of arc-welded AA7xxx joints is the susceptibility to severe localized corrosion (Kent, 1970, Reboul et al., 1985; Holroyd et al., 1987). It generally occurs as exfoliation corrosion within a heat affected zone (HAZ) a few millimeters from the weld bead, or a type of stress corrosion cracking (weld-toe cracking), which initiates at the weld toe and propagates into the interfacial region between the weld bead and the HAZ (so called “white zone”). In addition to the micro-galvanic cell activity induced by the intermetallic compound constituent and strengthening particles present, there is strong evidence that macro-galvanic cell activity between the weld bead and base AA7xxx alloy may be playing a controlling role. Electrochemical profiles taken across fusion welded joints, in cross-section, during exposure to saline solutions suggest that a significant potential difference exists across the AA7xxx arc-welded joint (Shumaker et al., 1967; Grauer and Wiedmer, 1980; Tuck, 1985, Onoro and Ranninger, 1993). These studies consistently show that the HAZ and base alloy are more electronegative with respect to the weld bead (arc-welded with AA5xxx filler wire). Despite this initial important work, the majority of the recent corrosion research effort on welded AA7xxx alloys has focused on the performance of friction stir welds (Lumsden et al., 1999; Wadeson et al., 2006; Hatamleh et al., 2009)."

A new model capable of predicting the solubility of calcium sulphate solid phases in zinc sulphate processing solutions from 25 to 95°C was developed. The model uses the Mixed Solvent Electrolyte (MSE) model of the OLI systems software to calculate the mean activity coefficients of the electrolyte species. The model was tested using recently developed experimental measurements. It was shown to predict accurately the solubility behaviour of calcium sulphate in multi-component zinc processing solutions containing ZnSO4, H2SO4, MgSO4, MnSO4, Fe2(SO4)3, Na2SO4 and (NH4)2SO4. The model can also explain the complex effect of coexisting metal sulphates on the solubility of the CaSO4 phases. The model is a practical tool for assessing the process chemistry of a wide variety of complex aqueous processing streams.

Cryolitic melts at a temperature of about 960 °C are used in reduction cells to dissolve alumina and to produce primary aluminium. At these temperatures cryolitic melts with an acidic composition have a significant vapour pressure, which contributes substantially to the evolution of fluorides from these cells, The Antoine equation is commonly used for relating vapour pressure data of liquids at different temperatures, It is also applicable to cryolitic melts, Published equations have at least 20 numerical constants, in order to allow for the effects of melt composition. In the present work a simplified equation with only 12 numerical constants was developed and is applicable for multiple additions to molten cryolite up to 30 wt %, The simplified equation was compared with the published equations of Haupin & Kvande and Gustaysen & Ostvold using 472 vapour pressure data of cryolitic melts. Results showed that the simplified equation has the same accuracy as the published equations in the composition range of interest to industry.

The mine of the year 2020 will need to be based on a new way of mining. It will employ technology in a paradigm that assumes responsibility for sustainable development: taking account not only economic but also ecological and social issues. This will require a holistic approach to mine design and planning, considering all controlling factors and impacts (technical, economic, environmental and social). A national collaborative strategy is required to address the several options that exist for the development and application of 2020 mining technology. Key issues in implementing 2020 mining technology will also relate to human resources, in terms of employment, skills and education. A need exists to proactively prepare for 2020 through development of a comprehensive education and training strategy.

"Rio Algom's Stanleigh Mine and Mill Operation Was' officially started up in August 1983. In September 1982, Rio Algom contracted Estonix International Inc. from Lively, Ontario, to develop and implement two innovative programs: (1) Work Renovation Planning, and (2) Systems Performance Training. This paper deals with the development and implementation of these two concepts relative to the plants technology from start-up to present and the exceptional results achieved. This paper discusses how a small but motivated workforce resulted in the smooth transition from startup to full production. It also deals with how these concepts were applied elsewhere in the organization which permitted a successful transition and downsizing of the over-all operation.IntroductionRio Algom Limited produces uranium in Elliot Lake, Ontario. In the late 1970s Rio Algom entered a contract with Ontario Hydro to supply uranium from its Stanleigh property, which had been idle since 1960. The mine was subsequently upgraded, and a new modem mill was designed and built, commencing operation in 1983.From then until September 1990,Rio Algom had three producing mines and mills in the Elliot Lake area. Quirke mill, with a capacity of 6350 tonnes per day, operated continuously from 1968. The Panel mill with a 3000 tonnes per day capacity, operated since 1979. Stanleigh mill continues to operate under long-term contracts, although at a production rate about 25070 lower than its rated capacity of 5000 tonnes per day.Both the Quirke and Panel mills, although not entirely similar, were conventional uranium mills utilizing crushing, grinding, leaching and ion exchange. As such, and in keeping with the traditional management style, there was a rather large mill operating workforce, which utilized a line-of-progression job classification system."

Ground support is a significant component of underground mining costs. The rehabilitation of failed support, however, is often much more expensive than the initial installation. This paper investigates whether the right type and length of support can be designed correctly the first time, through forward modelling of the support and the mining process. Back analyses demonstrate how high-quality instrumentation and monitoring can help with the estimation of the post-peak (post-failure) rock mass parameters required for a comprehensive analysis. A hybrid modelling approach combines a three-dimensional mine-wide boundary element model with a non-linear finite element model to allow for the failure process in the rock mass. The back analyses demonstrate that, for the case study site, the post-peak Generalized Hoek-Brown value of mr must be reduced significantly in order to properly simulate displacements observed in instrumentation data. High-quality instrumentation data is the key to post-peak rock mass parameter calibration. The procedures outlined in the paper highlight the need for a new hybrid numerical modelling package that can use the influence of three-dimensional mining-induced stresses to predict displacements in, and potential failure of, rock masses surrounding mining infrastructure in order to radically alter strategic and tactical mine design.

"Fourteen companies (Appendix) representing senior mining organizations in Canada were canvassed in order to assess: (1) the current usage and trends, and (2) the usefulness of computer applications in ore reserve estimation and grade control. The results of the questionnaire suggest that:• computers are unsurprisingly, predominant in the mining industry for calculating reserves and performing grade control;• time and cost savings are realized;• computer-based approaches are applicable to underground situations;• geological information is incorporated to the computerization process; and• computer usage does not hinder the collaboration of geologist and mining engineer.A clear need is identified for case histories comparing computer-calculated ore reserves and actual production data.IntroductionAmong the management and technical staff of some mining companies there is a perception that the application of computer based technology for the estimation of ore reserves and grade control, has as many drawbacks as benefits. Some of the objections raised against the utilization of computers for ore reserve estimation are that:• computer-based reserve models work for large open pit mines but not for underground situations;• computer-generated reserves ignore the geologist's knowledge base; they are strictly a number crunching exercise; and• the use of computers for ore reserves hinders collaboration between the geologist and mining engineer.In order to determine (I) the extent of current computer usage and future trends and (2) whether the objections noted above are borne out by experience, a number of senior Canadian mining companies were canvassed.The respondents were asked to provide:• an assessment of the importance of the computer in the ore reserve estimation and grade control process;• the level of involvement of individuals and staff groups with computer-based ore reserve estimation;• the advantages perceived and realized from the utilization of computer-based ore reserve approaches;• the current and future human resources requirements for the evaluation, implementation, maintenance and development of computer-based ore reserve systems;• the hardware and software resources presently used and planned; and• the developments needed to increase the use and acceptance of computer-based ore reserves."

The primary (sulphide) resources at Aphrodite are refractory in nature, requiring an oxidation process stage to be introduced to facilitate extraction of the gold. The company is investigating the use of pressure oxidation (POX) as the oxidation method for processing of high grade gold bearing concentrate it plans to produce at Aphrodite. POX has been used extensively around the world for the past 30 years and continues to be the favoured option for a number of refractory gold plants currently in the design and construction stages. Initial pressure oxidisation testing investigated the effect of temperature, pressure and grind size on a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from Alpha lode material. The concentrate averaged 47.3 g/t gold and was prepared from a composite of core samples averaging 1.49 g/t gold. Sub-samples of the concentrate were subjected to POX for 1 hour resulting in rapid oxidation during this very short period. Testing undertaken showed that there was a significant increase in sulphide oxidisation at higher temperature (220°C) and pressure (2,500 k/Pa) for the two grind sizes (75 and 20 microns) evaluated.
