"The notion of ""value"" has always been a subjective and contentious issue. Indeed, Value is in the eye of the beholder. There are varied methods and practices for valuing property, as there are industries in which they are applied. For example, there are ""replacement value"", ""insurance value, ""salvage value"", ""appraised value"", ""book value"" and ""fair market value"", to name a few, although in the mining industry, valuations usually refer to fair market value.In the Canadian mining industry, at present, there are no comprehensive regulations or guidelines that specify which approaches or methods are appropriate for use in the valuation of mineral projects. In January 1999, The Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission recommended that the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum establish a committee to review and advise on approaches and methodologies for the valuation of mineral properties. Among the approaches to be considered, are included the following: the Discounted Cash Flow Approach, the Cost Approach, the Option Pricing Approach and Market Comparables Approach. In addition, methodologies differ depending on whether the project is at the exploration stage or the producing stage.The CIMVal committee expects that its final report will form the basis for a standard Canadian Code for the valuation of mineral properties."

Most metallurgical industries generate toxic waste that must be treated prior to being released to the environment. However, in a lot of cases, the waste materials are poorly characterized or the analytical results are not well interpreted. These shortcomings often result in the development of inefficient industrial procedures, thus causing economic waste and difficulty meeting environmental regulations. Fortunately, a wide range of analytical techniques are available to guide researchers and engineers into making sound process development decisions. In this work, an industrial selenium and mercury removal process is used as an example to illustrate the application of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) on solid waste. Furthermore, samples of analytical results are presented and interpreted and the modifications to the industrial process that resulted are explained. Finally, a brief description of the advantages and limitations of the aforementioned analytical techniques is given with an emphasis on industrial solid waste material.

"A comparison between hydrogen-diffusion-based micro-porosity formation and growth behaviour of two important aluminium foundry alloys, B206 (Al-Cu) and A356 (Al-Si-Mg) is presented in this paper. Specifically, the predicted pore size and pore fraction distribution of these two alloys resulting from directional solidification and identical hydrogen concentration are investigated numerically based on a model proposed by Yao et al. (2011. Met. & Mat. Tran. A. 42A, 4137–4148). This model takes into consideration the initial hydrogen content in the melt, the cooling rate, the partitioning of hydrogen between the solid and liquid phases, and the evolution in solid fraction with temperature. Due to different alloy chemistries, the activity of hydrogen in B206 and A356 are quite different, as are the solidification range and the resulting solidification microstructure. Being a primary alloy, B206 has dendritic microstructure and solidifies over nearly 135°C (505–641°C), whereas A356 contains fifty percent eutectic microstructure, and solidifies over 80°C (533–613°C). This allows a very different behaviour of micropores i.e. the effective pore radius in B206 is quite a bit lower as compared to A356, as is the pore number density. The evolution of local hydrogen concentration in liquid metal is analysed and compared for both the alloys.INTRODUCTION Over the past decades, the demand for materials with enhanced strength-to-weight ratios has significantly increased in the aerospace and automobile industries in order to improved fuel efficiency. For many automotive components, particularly shape castings, the trend is towards replacing ferrous alloys with aluminium alloys. The increase in the use of Al is primarily due to its low density, about one-third that of steel, and its relatively good strength that allows for weight reduction without reducing performance. Presently, Al-Si based alloys (e.g. A356) are the most prevalent due to their good mechanical performance in strength-to-weight ratio and excellent castability (Atwood et.al., 2000). However, superior mechanical properties can be achieved using Al-Cu alloys. For example, the alloy B206 offers a higher strength while retaining excellent ductility (Poirier et.al., 1987)."

Selective leaching of lead from a Pb-Ag-Zn concentrate with hydrogen peroxide in citrate solutions was studied at room temperature. Leaching tests were performed, varying the H2O2 concentration and the solid-liquid ratio, holding the solution pH constant at 7, and the citrate concentration at 1 M. Lead extractions of 100 % were achieved with 4 and 5 times the stoichiometric quantity needed to form elemental sulfur, with only a small amount of metal impurities dissolved (Ag, Zn and Fe). The lead solubility limit at those conditions was found to be ~21 g L-1. X-ray diffraction analyses of the leach residues were free of galena (PbS), while other metal sulfides, such as sphalerite (ZnS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and pyrite (FeS2), were basically unaffected.

THE Eastern Townships of Quebec have been the chief Canadian source of chromite. Production, however, has never been large and, except for a period of steady but small output between 1894 and 1909, mining has been active only in war time. The known deposits are too small or too low grade to compete with overseas sources in normal times. During the last war, shipping difficulties and a greatly increased demand in the United States resulted in high prices and a ready market for low-.grade material. The Quebec chromite industry flourished and played an important part in relieving the wartime shortage. Shipments in 1918 .amounted to 15,600 tons of crude ore and 6,400 tons of concentrates. At the outbreak of the present war it was natural to turn again to the Quebec field as a possible source of this strategic mineral. Some of the old properties have since been opened by private and government money and some new deposits have been found. Total mill capacity is 750 tons per day, as compared with 200 to 300 tons in 1918. During 1940, 1941, and 1942, about 85 chromite deposits were examined by the Geological Survey in a belt 100 miles long and up to 7 miles wide. A part of this belt, about 35 miles long, in which the geological features ?were not well known, was mapped on a scale of 1/2; mile to an inch.? Small ..areas around some of the deposits were mapped in detail, on scales of 20 to 200 feet to an inch. Some geophysical work was done but did not result in the discovery of ore. Prospecting by stripping and trenching was then undertaken and chromite ore was uncovered at several localities. The above work was done by the writer and by J. W. Ambrose, who has kindly contributed his results for incorporation in this paper. Y. O. Introduction It is the purpose of this paper to discuss a number of the metallurgical improvements in the technology of copper-nickel ore treatment which have been introduced during recent years in the plants of ?the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited. In common with other ore treatment processes, the procedure for extracting nickel and copper is changing almost continuous! y. These changes are necessitated by reason of changes in ore grades and characteristics, rising material and labour charges, and the constant drive to maximize metal recovery and to minimize production costs. It is not possible to present a comprehensive list of all the changes made, and only a selected number of the improvements in the milling, smelting, and refining operations are covered. It should be clearly understood that some phases of the procedures described have been pioneered by others in kindred fields and due acknowledgment is given to their foresight and efforts. Articles have been published over the years describing the operations of the International Nickel Company plants and the reader is referred to the Engineering and Mining Journal, Vol. 130, No. 9, November 10th, 1930, and to the Canadian Mining Journal, Vol. 58, No. 11, November, 1937, and Vol. 67, No. 5, May, 1946. "Relating flotation performance to the electrochemical characteristics of a pulp remains a complex issue both in fundamental research and in practice. For example, in the case of thiol collectors different Eh values can result in the formation of the dimer or the metal thiolate which may or may not enhance the hydrophobicity of the mineral. Reducing or oxidizing conditions in a flotation system, viz. changing the Eh value, are usually manipulated to achieve an optimum flotation response by the control of pH and dissolved oxygen levels in the system. It is also possible to vary the potential by the addition of modifiers such as sodium hydrosulphide (NaHS), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of the addition of the oxidising agents, NaClO and H2O2, on valuable mineral recoveries and grades in the flotation of sulphides from a PGM bearing Merensky ore. Batch flotation tests were conducted at pH 9.2, the natural pH of the system, in the absence and presence of a xanthate collector and Eh modifiers, viz. NaClO or H2O2. Most importantly in this way it was possible to vary Eh at constant pH and DO levels. The results indicate that in the absence or presence of xanthate the addition of H2O2 reduced both the recovery and grade of copper and nickel. In the absence of xanthate, the addition of NaClO improved the recovery of copper slightly and both the recovery and grade of nickel significantly, but in the presence of xanthate NaClO addition resulted in unchanged copper recovery and grade, but those of nickel were reduced. Based on anecdotal evidence that the addition of trace amounts of a potential modifier could improve flotation performance further tests were conducted the results of which suggest improved flotation performance.INTRODUCTIONIn the Merensky Reef, platinum group minerals (PGM) are commonly associated with base metal sulphides (BMS) and this has an effect on the way in which these minerals can be concentrated by flotation (Vermaak, Venter & Pistorius, 2004; Wiese, Harris & Bradshaw, 2005; Schouwstra, Kinloch & Lee., 2000). A major problem stemming from this association has been reported to be the loss of valuable minerals (PGM) associated with the loss of BMS (Wiese et al., 2005) during flotation. Shackleton (2007) suggested that PGMs behave in a similar manner to sulphides during flotation. Therefore, in order to recover the PGM, base metals are targeted. There is thus a need to investigate ways to improve the flotation performance of the sulphide minerals. The electrochemistry of the flotation of sulphide minerals has been studied for over half a century and there is consensus that sulphide minerals float only under a suitable redox environment (Heyes & Trahar 1979). This implies that reducing and oxidizing conditions during flotation of ores such as Merensky can be manipulated/varied to achieve an optimum flotation response.During flotation, sulphide minerals interact with thiol collectors in an electrochemical reaction to form hydrophobic species at the mineral surface (Finkelstein & Goold 1972; Rand & Woods 1984). The sulphide minerals are semiconductors and their interaction with collectors involves transfer of electrons. As such, a potential difference results which is responsible for driving electrons between reacting species (Fuerstenau, Jameson & Yoon, 2007). The magnitude of the potential difference affects the relative energies of charge carriers (electrons) at the mineral/solution interface hence controlling the direction and rate of charge transfer or rate of reaction (Bard & Faulkner, 2001). In a mixed mineral system the mineral/solution interface potentials account for the mixed potential which is critical to the process of flotation (Chander, 2003; Woods, 2003)."

"A sample of flotation feed from Bakertalc Inc., High water, Quebec was subjected to flotation evaluation to improve the recovery of talc. A number of alternative frother/collectors and depressants as well as flotation parameters including pH, conditioning time, frother/collector concentration and pulp density were assessed. In addition, the possibility of using a size coarser than that currently employed for flotation (95% minus 50 um) was investigated.As far as possible, a laboratory duplication of the present circuit arrangement was folio wed so as to minimize the cost of any changes. The best results obtained were a concentrate analyzing 95.96% acid insol for a recovery of 65.98% after four stages of cleaning. With recirculation of cleaner tailings, the recovery would be higher.The possibility of using an alternative method, based on the natural ability of talc to float unaided by a frother/collector, was briefly explored with encouraging results.IntroductionBakertalc lnc ., located in the eastern townships at Highwater, Quebec, Is approximately 140 km east of Montreal near the Vermont, U.S. border. Originally called Baker Mining and Milling Co. Ltd., it has produced pulverized talc products since 1938(1 ), although records show that talc was mined in the area as early as 1871(2). Feed to the mill originally was obtained from local deposits, but since 1952 the van Reet mine near south Bolton, approximately 25 km from Highwater, has been the source of ore .In 1957 a Raymond high -side roller mill was installed which enabled production of a greater range of talc products and, in 1960, new crushing equipment and a dryer were added. Other additions to the mill were the introduction of wet magnetic separation, although this was later discontinued, and flotation to produce high-grade talc concentrates."

"More than a dozen AEM systems are currently being used in the routine exploration for massive sulphides. The systems differ from one another in minor respects, but fall into four main categories: rigid-coupled in-phase/quadrature systems; towed-bird, single-component systems; differential systems; and passive systems.Although field tests are important in demonstrating the performance characteristics of the AEM/airframe assembly (noise-levels, coupling effects, etc.), more meaningful evaluations can be made through physical or computer modelling. The latter approach has been used to compare the response of twelve AEM systems to both vertical and horizontal sheets, simulating a large orebody and a con-ductive overburden respectively. The effects of height changes are also studied.The results demonstrate that each AEM system has its own particular advantages and disadvantages. The relative importance of these is a matter for the geophysicist to judge, on the basis of specific geological and environ-mental information. Data currently available on AEM systems are adequate to permit an objective evaluation of the systems for a particular exploration program."

"Gold losses to natural carbonaceous matter during cyanide leaching have been investigated for over a century. The variation in the severity of the problem from one ore to another has led to a range of different processes being implemented at different mine sites. Most commercial options utilise one or more of the following processes: roasting, carbon pre-flotation, organic blinding, CIL, chlorine passivation, pressure oxidation, biological passivation, elevated temperature CIL, RIL and thiosulfate. This paper provides a background to identify the most appropriate process or combination of processes for a particular ore. It also presents information on how these processes may be implemented, drawing on information in the literature and from current or recent applications at operations such as the following: Stawell, Kumtor, Penjom, Twin Creeks, Macraes Flat, Kittilä, Fosterville, Inata, Carlin, Goldstrike, and Jerritt Canyon. Various process options have been dismissed, or deemed unsuccessful due to limited knowledge available on the strengths and weaknesses of the different options and their implementation. The authors have collectively been involved in flowsheet development and project implementation in four commercial plants that have treated preg-robbing ores.INTRODUCTION Cyanide processing has been the mainstay of gold recovery for well over a century. It is generally a very effective process with over 90% recovery on free milling ores, but complex and refractory ores may only give 0–50% recovery with conventional processing (La Brooy et al., 1994). People have written about gold losses to natural carbonaceous matter during cyanidation for over a century e.g. Feldtmann, (1915). The earliest reports related to African operations, but the issue has since been reported in Canada, North and South America, Australia, Russia and China. The phenomenon is usually referred to as ‘preg-robbing’ dating from the times before the use of granular activated carbon for gold recovery, when gold was lost from the pregnant solution before it could be separated from the leach solids and recovered by cementation. Many excellent reviews have been published e.g. Dunn et al. (2013), summarising the options considered and where they have been applied commercially."

The extraction of gold and silver has been examined via the use of mixed halogens: chlorine and bromine. The reaction was performed in a brine of sodium chloride with a small amount of sodium bromide at 40-50°C, in an atmosphere of chlorine, at atmospheric pressure. The process takes advantage of the very high reactivity of bromine towards gold, while the higher oxidation capacity of chlorine leads to gold chloride as end product with recycling of bromine. Fast reaction rates are observed along with gold recovery at the level of 95%. Chlorine-consuming common elements are removed prior to chlorination.

"Exposure to airborne respirable silica in surface and underground mine operations is known to be the cause of industrial lung diseases. For this reason, silica is a regulated substance and worker exposure must be monitored regularly. Diesel exhaust also contains substances which are potential caricinogens. In an underground setting, diesel particulate may be the main component of what is referred to as respirable combustible dust (ReD). Although diesel particulate or soot is not at present a rigorously regulated substance, new epidemiological data is prompting North American institutes and agencies to regulate diesel soot or RCD exposure. This paper describes a method where by silicaand RCD exposure may be determined using a single personal sample. In this method, an airborne respirable dust sample is obtained and analyzed nondestructively for silica components using an on-filter X-ray diffraction method. Filters are then ashed at 500°C in a muffle furnace over a four-hour period to determine mass loss due to RCD burning. "Fourteen companies (Appendix) representing senior mining organizations in Canada were canvassed in order to assess: (1) the current usage and trends, and (2) the usefulness of computer applications in ore reserve estimation and grade control. The results of the questionnaire suggest that:• computers are unsurprisingly, predominant in the mining industry for calculating reserves and performing grade control;• time and cost savings are realized;• computer-based approaches are applicable to underground situations;• geological information is incorporated to the computerization process; and• computer usage does not hinder the collaboration of geologist and mining engineer.A clear need is identified for case histories comparing computer-calculated ore reserves and actual production data.IntroductionAmong the management and technical staff of some mining companies there is a perception that the application of computer based technology for the estimation of ore reserves and grade control, has as many drawbacks as benefits. Some of the objections raised against the utilization of computers for ore reserve estimation are that:• computer-based reserve models work for large open pit mines but not for underground situations;• computer-generated reserves ignore the geologist's knowledge base; they are strictly a number crunching exercise; and• the use of computers for ore reserves hinders collaboration between the geologist and mining engineer.In order to determine (I) the extent of current computer usage and future trends and (2) whether the objections noted above are borne out by experience, a number of senior Canadian mining companies were canvassed.The respondents were asked to provide:• an assessment of the importance of the computer in the ore reserve estimation and grade control process;• the level of involvement of individuals and staff groups with computer-based ore reserve estimation;• the advantages perceived and realized from the utilization of computer-based ore reserve approaches;• the current and future human resources requirements for the evaluation, implementation, maintenance and development of computer-based ore reserve systems;• the hardware and software resources presently used and planned; and• the developments needed to increase the use and acceptance of computer-based ore reserves."

"Selective mining, such as post pillar cut and fill, is used in large, flat, irregularly shaped ore bodies where ground stability is to be maintained. This selective mining is used to open the stope to the full lateral extent of the ore body in order to minimize the dilution and maximise the recovery. For increased mining depth, design of the post pillar becomes more challenging since those pillars will eventually fail as mining progresses upwards. The post pillar should be designed such that failure does not occur at the early mining stage, such as at the first cut. After mining progresses upwards, the post pillars are expected to fail but be confined by backfill. In order to maximise ore recovery, both drift width and post pillar size must be designed adequately with a consideration of all geomechanic parameters. This paper will describe the process used to design post-pillar cut and fill for one of the ore bodies in Vale’s Copper Cliff Mine using a combination of both empirical deterministic and numerical modelling techniques. By utilizing both empirical deterministic and numerical modelling techniques drift width and post pillar size can be effectively designed. Current post pillar cut and fill design in the existing Vale operations are used to validate the design for Copper Cliff Mine. INTRODUCTIONCopper Cliff Mine is located within the Copper Cliff Offset in the limits of City of Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, as shown in Figure 1. The Copper Cliff Offset extends about eight kilometres south from the Sudbury Igneous Complex into the footwall rocks. Until 2008, the current Copper Cliff Mine was operated as two separate mines i.e. North Mine and South Mine. However, as part of restructuring of Vale Ontario Operations, the North and South Mines were merged in 2009 to form the “Copper Cliff Mine”."

The mine of the year 2020 will need to be based on a new way of mining. It will employ technology in a paradigm that assumes responsibility for sustainable development: taking account not only economic but also ecological and social issues. This will require a holistic approach to mine design and planning, considering all controlling factors and impacts (technical, economic, environmental and social). A national collaborative strategy is required to address the several options that exist for the development and application of 2020 mining technology. Key issues in implementing 2020 mining technology will also relate to human resources, in terms of employment, skills and education. A need exists to proactively prepare for 2020 through development of a comprehensive education and training strategy.

The primary (sulphide) resources at Aphrodite are refractory in nature, requiring an oxidation process stage to be introduced to facilitate extraction of the gold. The company is investigating the use of pressure oxidation (POX) as the oxidation method for processing of high grade gold bearing concentrate it plans to produce at Aphrodite. POX has been used extensively around the world for the past 30 years and continues to be the favoured option for a number of refractory gold plants currently in the design and construction stages. Initial pressure oxidisation testing investigated the effect of temperature, pressure and grind size on a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from Alpha lode material. The concentrate averaged 47.3 g/t gold and was prepared from a composite of core samples averaging 1.49 g/t gold. Sub-samples of the concentrate were subjected to POX for 1 hour resulting in rapid oxidation during this very short period. Testing undertaken showed that there was a significant increase in sulphide oxidisation at higher temperature (220°C) and pressure (2,500 k/Pa) for the two grind sizes (75 and 20 microns) evaluated. The proposed flowsheet, OPEX and CAPEX are critical aspects for project development.

Ground support is a significant component of underground mining costs. The rehabilitation of failed support, however, is often much more expensive than the initial installation. This paper investigates whether the right type and length of support can be designed correctly the first time, through forward modelling of the support and the mining process. Back analyses demonstrate how high-quality instrumentation and monitoring can help with the estimation of the post-peak (post-failure) rock mass parameters required for a comprehensive analysis. A hybrid modelling approach combines a three-dimensional mine-wide boundary element model with a non-linear finite element model to allow for the failure process in the rock mass. The back analyses demonstrate that, for the case study site, the post-peak Generalized Hoek-Brown value of mr must be reduced significantly in order to properly simulate displacements observed in instrumentation data. High-quality instrumentation data is the key to post-peak rock mass parameter calibration. The procedures outlined in the paper highlight the need for a new hybrid numerical modelling package that can use the influence of three-dimensional mining-induced stresses to predict displacements in, and potential failure of, rock masses surrounding mining infrastructure in order to radically alter strategic and tactical mine design.

Cryolitic melts at a temperature of about 960 °C are used in reduction cells to dissolve alumina and to produce primary aluminium. At these temperatures cryolitic melts with an acidic composition have a significant vapour pressure, which contributes substantially to the evolution of fluorides from these cells, The Antoine equation is commonly used for relating vapour pressure data of liquids at different temperatures, It is also applicable to cryolitic melts, Published equations have at least 20 numerical constants, in order to allow for the effects of melt composition. In the present work a simplified equation with only 12 numerical constants was developed and is applicable for multiple additions to molten cryolite up to 30 wt %, The simplified equation was compared with the published equations of Haupin & Kvande and Gustaysen & Ostvold using 472 vapour pressure data of cryolitic melts. Results showed that the simplified equation has the same accuracy as the published equations in the composition range of interest to industry.
