"DEFINITION OF THE REGION, ITS BOUNDARIES, AND PHYSICAL AND GE'OLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICSTHIS PAPER concerns the Western Cordilleran region, embracing most of British Columbia, the southern half of Yukon Territory and the southwesternmost part of the District of MacKenzie. It excludes Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands, which are discussed in a background paper on the Pacific Continental Shelf. The region is bounded on the south by the northwestern United States, on the west by the continental shelf and Alaska, on the north by the front of the Ogilvie Mountains, on the northeast by the axis of the MacKenzie Mountains and on the east by the Rocky Mountain Trench.The region is dominated by two mountain chains that con tain icefields and glaciers: the St. Elias, Coast and Cascade Mountains in the west; the Selwyn, Pelly, Cassiar, Omineca and Columbia Mountains in the east. The Intermontane region between these mountain chains consists of lower mountains and plateaus. In the mountains, the region above the timberline and many of the steep valley-walls provide good exposures of rock, but these areas are subject to rockslides and landslides and in winter to snow avalanches. Much of the Western Cordillera was covered by ice-sheets at various times during the Pleistocene epoch. Consequently, the larger valleys in the mountains and much of the Intermontane region contain much glacial drift and alluvium and only limited exposures of rock. This same terrain in the Southern Cordillera, however, is the most favourable for agriculture. Parts of the region, particularly in the two mountain chains, are heavily forested. Elsewhere, the forest cover is less, with grassland prevailing in the south and tundra in the north."

There are no physical barriers along the border of our countries. This market is in dose proximity to Canadian production. This market is already joined by crude oil pipe-1,ines to numerous producing areas of Canada. The tariff barriers are reasonable. We are not handicapped by mandatory quota restrictions. There are many of us who desire lo sell Canadian crude oil in this market. Further, and what is really important, there are many of us who desire to buy Canadian crude oil for this market. It is fundamental that for crude oil to be sold in the world market, it must ?be sold at competitive prices. At the same time, it is important that such competitive price must result in a fair price for the crude oil at the we1lhead. The factors of nearness to market, cheap pipe line transportation, and reasonable United States tariffs, all tend to make ?possible a competitive market and a fair wellhead price.

"Nearly perfect spherical shaped water drops rolling-off from the surface of lotus leaf is one of the beauties of nature. This kind of surface is called superhydrophobic, since the water does not like it. Physically, a superhydrophobic surface provides a contact angle (CA) of water over 150°. The combinations of both mico-nanostructure topography as well as low surface energy are essential to have such high CA on a surface. Nano-micro structured superhydrophobic surfaces have been developed in different methods. (i) Monodispersed fluorinated silica nanoparticles have been synthetized via Stöber Sol-Gel process and deposited on various surfaces, such as aluminium or glass, to obtain transparent superhydrophobic thin films. (ii) Similarly, zinc stearate nanocomposite coating has been fabricated by spray process on the same substrates. These thin films are found mechanically robust with drag reduction of coefficient 16% lower than as-received surfaces. (iii) By electrodepositing pure zinc on steel surfaces and further coating it with diluted room-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber, the surface become superhydrophobic. This superhydrophobic surface protects the steel against corrosion by increasing the polarization resistance from 1.5 k? on steel to 44.4 k?. This coating also reduced the ice adhesion on the steel surface 6.3 times as compared to bare steel substrates. Globally, these superhydrophobic surfaces have tremendous applications against corrosion reductions, drag reductions and ice adhesion reductions.INTRODUCTIONSuperhydrophobic coatings are increasingly attractive to the industry and academia due to their unique self-cleaning properties as a result of their water repelling characteristics. Fabrication of superhydrophobic coating is an inspiration from nature as water is seen to repel on many natural surfaces such as those of the lotus leaves, butterfly wings, water striders’ legs, and so on (Gao & Jiang, 2004; J. Huang, Wang & Wang, 2006; Neinhuis & Barthlott, 1997; Zheng, Gao & Jiang, 2007). This non-wetting phenomenon is well understood on lotus leaves, shown on the Figure 1 (a), and it is considered as the basis of the studies of superhydrophobicity. The existence of this binary structure on the surface of the lotus leaves allows a large amount of air entrapment and consequently reduces the contact area of water on it and the presence of low surface energy waxy components with reduced affinity to water together leads to the superhydrophobic properties. The phenomenon is shown on Figure 1 (b). Cassie and Baxter (Cassie & Baxter, 1944) as well as Wenzel (Wenzel, 1936) proposed two mathematical models to explain the wetting phenomena on rough surfaces that leads to superhydrophobic properties. By definition, superhydrophobic surfaces are characterized by a water contact angle value = 150° with the rolling off of water drops from the surfaces (Sarkar & Saleema, 2010). Superhydrophobic surfaces find tremendous importance in the technological world where it can applied in domains such as anti-corrosion, anti-biofouling, electrowetting, icephobic and even in drag reductions (Bushnell & Moore, 1991; Cao, Jones, Sikka, Wu & Gao, 2009; Carlborg & van der Wijngaart, 2010; Carré & Mittal, 2009; Y. Huang, Sarkar & Chen, 2010a; R. Karmouch, Coude, Abel & Ross, 2009). However, the most important challenge faced by industries is their feasibility large scale in an effective an economical manner."

The Pembina Cardium pool is a low permeability, stratified, solution-gas drive reservoir. Water-flooding has proven to be an effective means of pressure maintenance for all areas of the pool in which an economic rate of water injection can be maintained. The majority of water injection wells in the pool are converted oil well~ with capacities greater than 100 millidarcy-feet. If the average injection rate per unit of capacity can be in-creased the lower capacity areas of the pool can be economically flooded. Theory, laboratory work, and two . early miscible-flooding projects with-in the pool suggested that average water injection rates for converted wells could be increased two to three-fold by the initial injection of natural gas liquids and natural gas. Recently developed flow-through electrochemical techniques (1,2) were employed for measuring pH in high concentration aqueous solutions and geothermal brines. The pH values of (1) 5.0 mol kg-1 NaCl + x mol kg-1 HCl, (2) 3.0 mol kg-1 of NaCl + 0.5 mol kg -1 of KCl + 1.0 mol kg-1 of CaCl2 + x mol kg-1 HCl (x < 0.1 mol kg-1), and (3) mixtures of Al2(SO4)3-H2SO4-H2O, MgSO4-H2SO4-H2O, and NiSO4-H2SO4-H2O solutions have been measured at temperatures from 100 to 280°C. The obtained experimental data and their thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that the electrochemical system can be used for on-line pH monitoring of high concentration aqueous solutions with an accuracy of ±0.1-0.3 pH units over a wide range of temperatures. Greater deviation exists in real laterite leach solution measurements due to in situ precipitation of Na-alunite. The system is excellent for research and process development work. Further work is needed to ensure robust operation under pressure leach conditions of laterites.

The Autogenous milling of ores holds an increasing attraction as the focus moves towards reducing energy usage, both direct and embodied in grinding media. However, most of the early AG mills were converted to SAG for improved stability and increased throughput. This imposes a huge penalty in steel grinding media consumption. The LKAB iron ore operations in Sweden process highgrade magnetite through fully-autogenous milling lines to a final product P80 of about 45µm. The outcomes of P9O AMIRA research surveys, covering a wide range of mill fillings and throughputs and with different feed blends, are presented. Insights are provided on operational strategies, opportunities, the influence of feed size control and balancing the blend of competent gangue and softer magnetite. Areas of importance in the successful operation and control of energy-efficient autogenous circuits are highlighted.

"We report the effects of porosity and total organic carbon (TOC) content on the mechanical behavior of organic-rich chalks, based on laboratory measurements. The organic-rich chalks are from the Senonian Ghareb and Mishash formations. This deposit is an immature oil-prone source rock, about 300 meters thick, situated at shallow depths (several hundreds of meters) in the Shefela basin in central Israel. The study is based on core data collected from the Zoharim borehole.Three main phases comprise the bulk volume of this rock: 1) carbonate mineralogical phase (predominantly calcite); 2) pores (mostly saturated with brine); and 3) solid organic phase (type IIS kerogen). The mechanical effects of porosity (23-45%) and TOC (4-19%) are evaluated based on bulk incompressibilities vs. volumetric fractions analysis. Volumetric fractions of mineralogical and organic phases were obtained by porosity, density and TOC measurements. Saturated rock bulk moduli were measured through ultrasonic velocity measurements. Saturated rock bulk moduli correlate best with the sum of kerogen and pore volume fractions, rather than each of them separately. The volumetric fractions were also used to define the range of bulk modulus of the organic-rich chalk, using the Hashin-Shtrikman upper and lower bounds. Based on Marion's Bounding Average Method (BAM), the normalized stiffness factor of the chalk averaged at w=0.197, indicating a soft pore geometry. Using the average normalized stiffness factor, the BAM predictions showed excellent match with the saturated rock bulk modulus and the sum of kerogen and pore volume fractions. Based on our findings, it is inferred that kerogen grains do not support the solid skeleton but are distributed between the minerals grains. We also propose here a straightforward approach for calculating the Hashin-Shtrikman bounds, based on TOC and porosity measurements. The mechanical effects of porosity and TOC indicated here are very important for the understanding of the influence of immature kerogen presence in highly porous chalks, as the Ghareb and Mishash formations."

"Rocks of the Grenville Province in southeastern Ontario are currently largely dismissed by many geologists as having little or no potential for discovery of significant deposits of metallic minerals. The present study demonstrates that the area contains numerous deposit types which elsewhere are major metal producers. Therefore, there is significant unrealized potential, especially for gold, zinc, uranium, and possibly copper.The variety of deposits of metallic mineralization include stratiform zinc in marbles; stratabound base metal sulphides in volcanic and sedimentary hosts; gold-quartz veins; quartzmagnetite iron formation; copper-nickel and iron-titanium in intrusive rocks; magnetite skarns; molybdenum in skarns and pegmatites; uranium and thorium in pegmatites, veins, and calc-silicate gneisses; hematite veins; dolomite marbles (magnesium); and barite-jluorite-celestite-galena-calcite veins. There has been significant production of iron, lead, zinc, magnesium, gold, silver, and uranium.The vast majority of the metallic mineral deposits are confined to late Precambrian supracrustal and related intrusive rocks of the Grenville Supergroup. Many of the deposits are stratiform and/or stratabound and occur within units toward the top of major volcanic successions and in the lower portions of younger carbonate-clastic sedimentary successions.Processes responsible for mineral concentration in the area include: (I) syngenetic hydrothermal activity related to both volcanism and sedimentation; (2) epigenetic processes related to diagenesis, regional metamorphism, and igneous intrusive activity; (3) magmatic processes related to igneous intrusions; and (4) supergene concentration and enrichment. The genetic classification of the mineral deposits presented is based on observed geological relationships and these interpreted geneses. The deposit types have counterparts in volcanogenic and sedimentary exhalative, Mississippi Valley type, magmatic, contact metasomatic, and lode gold deposits. Many of the exploration criteria for deposits of these types may be applicable in the Grenville Province, despite the generally high metamorphic grades and complex deformation."

Geophysical studies have extended seaward in recent years, and the important discoveries which have been made have led to a better understanding of geological processes. A present source of certain minerals, the sea will eventually serve as an important source of desalinated water. The continental helves, in particular, represent a potential mineral resource. The expansion of Canadian oceanographic effort that is now underway will eventually lead to the exploitation of the wealth beneath the sea. THE subject of this symposium, which emphasizes the word "geophysics," the specialties of the speakers who are contributing and the nature of the audience at first made me believe that I, a a physical oceanographer, would be out of place. However, I shall undertake to classify myself as a geophysicist, and shall arrange my remarks on my specialty o that they might be of interest to those of you who are predominantly geologists, metallurgists or mining engineers.

"The removal of iron asgoethite from the high iron bearing solutions generated in zinc hydrometallurgy using a strong airflow device was investigated. The influence of oxygen flow, copper ion concentration, temperature and reaction time on iron precipitation as goethite was studied. The optimum conditions were: oxygen flow 0.2-0.35m3/h, copper ion concentration 0.25-0.5g/L, temperature 80-90oC, zinc oxide powder neutralizing agent and a reaction time of5to 7hours. Under the optimal conditions, the Fe2+concentration was reduced to 0.025g/L after iron precipitation, and the goethite residue contained 38.7wt.%Fe. The SEM and XRD analyses showed that the iron was present as well formed FeOOH crystals in the iron residue, and the amount of iron sulphate was very low. Production practice shows that, when the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 11.61g/L and 4.08g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 1,439kg/day. When the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 14.51g/L and 2.73g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 2,454kg/day. This represents a ~70 percent increase in iron removal.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of iron removal is to produce a small volume of iron residue, and our industrial goethite process meets this requirement. The high Fe(II) solution in our reactor isoxidized/hydrolyzed to precipitate goethite and the precipitate is sent to a pyro metallurgical furnace for final residue treatment. Some literature discusses (DengYong-guiet al., 2008;Meiguang-guiet al., 2001;Zhongzhu-qianet al., 1980) research on iron hydrolysis; one of the reported rate limiting parameters was the low availability of the oxidant when using air and another was the inhomogeneous air distribution. There are two iron hydrolysis-goethite precipitation methods; the Electrolytic Zinc process (EZ) and the Vieille Montagne process (VM) (Lei Xiang, 2006; Xuguo-qiang, 2007;ZhaoYonget al.,2005). The EZ method hydrolyzes the Fe3+directly to FeOOH. The weakness of the EZ process is the low recovery rate of the associated minor metals. The VM method reduces the iron to the ferrous state and then oxidizes the Fe(II)to Fe(III),with simultaneous hydrolysis/precipitation of the Fe(III) as FeOOH. Before iron hydrolysis, the minor metals, such as indium, could be selectively precipitated, because Fe(II)requires a high pH for hydrolysis. The Mitchell Creek Landslide is a large, structurally controlled, complex bedrock instability located in northwestern British Columbia. Characterization of the landslide using aerial photograph, exploration geology, and geotechnical investigation data has been completed allowing the development of a three dimensional conceptual model of the landslide domains and slope behaviour. Three domains have been identified in the landslide, from top to bottom: the Sliding domain, a relatively intact slab slowly sliding into the valley; the Transition domain, located in the mid slope of the landslide and showing evidence of significant extension and continuing to subside and displace into the valley; and a Toppling domain, at the toe of the landslide in an area of overturned foliation. Movement is greatest in the Toppling domain, with long term estimated rates of movement up to 4 times that of the Sliding domain; the Transition domain exhibits the greatest range of displacement rates, with average long term values approximately double the slower Sliding domain. This paper documents the results of numerical modelling of the Mitchell Creek Landslide with variation in geomechanical properties, basal rupture surface configuration, structural fabric, and pore water pressure conditions. The locations of internal shear surfaces within the landslide have been estimated from surface scarps, structural fabric orientation, and borehole monitoring data. The performance of each numerical model was evaluated against observed behaviour of the landslide. The configuration and properties of the basal rupture surface were identified as critical to model behaviour, as was spacing and location of internal structures.

"The concept of using chemical methods in prospecting dates back at least to the middle of the 16th century. Modern methods of geochemical prospecting, however, based on secondary haloes and utilizing trace-element techniques, were first practised in the U.S.S.R. and the Scandinavian countries in the 1930's. After 1945, methods based on soils, stream sediments and vegetation were rapidly developed in the U.S.A., the United Kingdom, Canada, France and other countries.The modern methods of geochemical prospecting owe their rapid development in the 20th century to the following:1.-Recognition of the primary and secondary dispersion haloes and trains that are associated with all mineral deposits. 2.-Development of accurate and rapid analytical methods utilizing the spectrograph and the various specific sensitive colorimetrie reagents, especially dithizone. 3.-Development of polyethylene laboratory ware of all types and the development of resins. This permitted greater freedom of field analyses and reduced the incidence of contamination.4.-Development of gas chromatography. This permitted the rapid and accurate determination of hydrocarbons in petroleum prospecting.Future research in geochemical prospecting should be focused on the following tasks: 1.-Definition of geochemical provinces and their relation to mineral deposits. 2.-Development of methods for discovering large low-grade deposits. 3.-Development of methods for discovering deeply buried deposits. 4.-Further development of methods to outline primary haloes. 5.-Eiucidation and formulation of techniques to relate the size and intensity of anomalies to the grade of the deposits. 6.-Development and refinement of biogeochemical methods, especially those based on indicator plants, chlorotic or toxic effects, and microbiological techniques. 7.-Definition of the types of primary and secondary haloes associated with accumulations of oil and gas."

The Islamic Republic of Iran is a very important producer of raw materials in the world. The country holds 68 types of minerals, including salt, sand and gravel, chrome, lead, zinc, copper, coal, gold, and iron-ore. With more than 37 billion tons of measured and indicated reserves and 55 billion tons of total mineral resources, Iran is ranked among the 15 major mineral-rich countries. Sangan iron-ore mines (SIOM) is one of the biggest iron ore mining complexes in Iran, located in a remote, but strategically important area near the Afghanistan border. The Iranian government has planned several mining projects in this region for a stepwise development over the next 5 years to satisfy the growing demand of the Iranian steel industry. In cooperation with private companies, these projects shall be realized as sustainable as possible. This paper introduces SIOM and describes socially responsible activities undertaken during the initial development of this mining complex. The effects of these activities will be demonstrated. Unique attributes of the Sangan area have a significant impact on the acceptance of SIOM by regional stakeholders. The government has made several social investments that benefit workers´ families and the community. They are attempts to build social capital for the mining operations and demonstrate a commitment for socially responsible mining to the communities and the local population. They aim to create a balance between the local and regional expectations and requirements and the necessity to secure the corporate profitability at a reasonable and sustainable level. Investment in socially responsible activities is not a choice but a necessity to improve the relations between mining companies and stakeholders in the communities. It is recommended that social investments should be carefully planned and implemented from the early stages of mining activities, and should proceed throughout the life cycle of the mines.

"A large-scale expansion to Pacific Coast Bulk Terminals Ltd. has now been completed and placed in operation. The original plant, built approximately eight years ago, consists of the direct rail-car to ship transfer of bulk commodities. The extension includes additional rail-car unloading, a transfer house system for directing commodities to storage or ship, major storage and reclaim facilities, a second shiploader and a second deep-sea berth. In addition to the facilities for overseas shipments, a wood-chip loader and a barge berth have been installed for domestic shipments of wood chips and, occasionally, for other local commodities. The design considerations imposed by the nature of the products to be handled are covered in this paper."

Abstract - The Ta-Nb-Zr-REE-rich McKeel Lake alkali granite pegmatite-aplite dike swarm is hosted within the late Silurian multiphase alkali granite intrusion (Welsford) near Browns Flats in southwestern New Brunswick. A steep easterly dipping series of pegmatite-aplite dikes trending 170º can be traced 150 m along strike; they are up to 40 cm wide, closely spaced (10-20 cm apart), and interconnected by narrow branching dikelets that generally trend perpendicular to the overall strike direction. The Welsford intrusion has mantle A-type affinities characterized by enrichment of Zr, Ta, Nb, Th, and rare earth elements (REE). Two separate sets of dikes have been identified: (1) an unmineralized fine-grained porphyry, which occurs at depth and seems to be the youngest intrusive phase; and (2) a mineralized pegmatite-aplite dike swarm (419 ± 20 Ma) that crops out at surface. The mineralized pegmatite-aplite dikes likely represent a late magmatic, highly fractionated phase of the Welsford intrusion. XRF and INAA data indicate that the Welsford intrusions and related pegmatite-aplite dikes show elevated levels of Ta (74-220 ppm), Nb (750-3,040 ppm), Zr (1,450-36,000 ppm), Y (540-3,070 ppm), Th (170-870 ppm), U (60-250 ppm), Ce (430-1,950 ppm) and Yb (110-290 ppm). Electron microprobe analysis of two samples identified Ta-Nb- and REE-rich phases: euxenite, fergusonite, aeschynite, (Y)-aeschynite, and a REE carbonate.

Laboratocy flarmnability tests were perfonned on dust samples from Fraser Mine in a 1.2 L Lindenburg horizontal tube furnace to detennine the percentage of sulphur oxidized during ignition. The explosion pot ential of sulphide dusts depends on their degree of spontaneous oxidat ion, which was measured by the quantitative analysis of so2 gas released during ignition. Test results indicated that dusts with low sulphur content could exhibit a higher degree of oxidation than a sample with high sulphur content. txlst characterisation using image analysis techniques suggests that the structure and the texture of dust are important factors influencing the explosibility of sulphide dust at ignition temperatures. Therefore for safe mine operations% sulphur content cannot be considered as a reliable single index that could be used to predict the potential of a sulphide dust explosion. Physical, chemical and mineralogical characterisation of dust plays an important role in the detennination of suitable indices for the prediction and prevention of sulphide ore dust explosions.

THE Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company&apos;s underground mine at Flin Flon, Manitoba, has in the past been serviced by two working shafts-the North Main shaft, and the No. 3 shaft. The North Main shaft is used to hoist the total production from under-ground, and handles the greater part of the mine supplies and crews. The shaft is five-compartment design, rectangular in cross-section, and is equipped entirely with steel shaft sets from the surface to the finished depth of 2,210 feet. Hoisting equipment in the surface plant will not permit the North Main shaft to be extended below its present finished depth. The No. 3 shaft, located approximately 2,300 feet from the North Main shaft, is used primarily as a ventilation shaft, and for hoisting lower-level development waste to the 390 level, where this material is used as mine fill. The No. 3 shaft is of standard rectangular design, timbered with 8-in. by 8-in. creosoted fir sets, hung on 6-foot centres. From the surface to the 1,430 level, the No. 3 shaft consists of three 5 ft. by 5 ft. compartments, and below this level to the completed depth of 2,300 feet, the shaft is increased to four compartments. To service the mine and to expedite development below the 2,210 level, a one and one-half compartment winze was sunk from the 2,210 level to a depth of 766 feet, or approxima tel y the 3,000 level.

In the conventional alkaline leaching of concentrate containing nickel, copper and cobalt, copper is usually removed from the system, prior to nickel reduction, by sulphide precipitation. A new process is described for the selective extraction of copper and separation from cobalt and nickel, using liquid-liquid extraction. General Mills LIX-63 dissolved in a kerosene diluent is the extractant. Trace amounts of co-extracted cobalt and nickel are easily removed by a scrub treatment, and copper is recovered from the extract by sulphuric acid stripping, thus providing a solution amenable to the oroduction of electrolytic copper. Estimated processing costs are included together with a proposed flowsheet.

In the framework of the optimization of Teniente Converter operation the new system of automatic flux feeding through gar-gun was implemented in the Potrerillos Smelter, Codelco Chile, Salvador Division. The control algoritm based on simple iron and silica balance adjusted by empirical coefficients was incorporated in the logical programmer. The programmer works in real time gathering information from the plant instrumentation events and introduced chemical assays of concentrate, slag and flux. Through the auto-tuning of the automatic operation the criterions of optimal flux dosage were determined. Four month of operation of the automatic flux feeding system demonstrated the stabilization of magnetite content in the slag in the narrow range from 18 to 20% and the decrease of flux consumption, corresponding to annual savings US$ 340,000. Additionally, the automatic system helps operators in the control room in fast determination of optimal fluxing and avoid the errors in flux dosage affecting the slag quality and its impact on refractory wear.
