The Sydney Coalfield, Nova Scotia contains extensive undersea longwall mining operations which are expected to continue well into the 21st Century. A long term research program has been initiated by the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory to investigate the full spectrum of problems associated with undersea mining and develop specific guidelines for use by the mine operator. At present, research is centred on the detailed evaluation of existing undersea sub- sidence guidelines, the identification and development of instrumentation capable of moni- toring seafloor subsidence profiles and the effective sealing of offshore exploration boreholes. In addition, work is also planned to examine in situ strata permeability changes occurring between the mining horizon and seabed and the feasibility of using artificial islands.

It is suggested that if adequate knowledge is available about classifiers in closed grinding circuits, these units may be used as on-stream size analysers when equipped with suitable sensing devices. The geologists at the Zinc Mine in Broken Hill have developed a method of logging core using portable MS-DOS computers and LOTUS 123. The computer based logging system has almost halved both the time and cost to produce a completed log. The system is fast, flexible, easy and pleasant to use.

The increasing use of Ditch Witch trenching to define gold ore bound- aries in supergeme enriched near surface open cut mines has led to the consideration of using this technique for other sampling procedures. The use of Ditch Witch trenching for exploration has not been widely used and it is anticipated that the technique described will help stimulate more extensive use and new sampling techniques.

Arm Royalty systems of different types are used throughout Australia by both state and federal governments to raise revenue and thus facilitate in the proper distribution of mineral wealth. Royalty systems should be neutral and equitable but by their very nature these objectives are impossible to obtain. Because of the individual nature of mineral deposits, in particular variable cutoff grades and tonnages, governments should be aware of the possible trade off between short and long term gains of the particular royalty scheme introduced.

There are numerous detrital diamond deposits worldwide with uncertain or disputed links to known primary kimberlite/lamproite sources. In this study, we utilise 40Ar/39Ar dating of clinopyroxene inclusions in diamonds as a provenance tool applied to the mega-placer deposits along the West Coast of southern Africa. These data demonstrate that most West Coast diamonds originated known Cretaceous kimberlites on the Kaapvaal craton with negligible input from proximal Permian glacial deposits. The paper presents a review of research in the area of explosible coal dust with respect to safety in the underground mining environment. Research over the last several decades has concentrated on generating dust clouds in small scale laboratory explosion chambers to study flammability limits and the physical and chemical variables which affect explosion propensity. The validity of this approach is discussed and the results obtained for a range of coal types compared.

The different stages of the metallurgical evaluation of an ore resource and their importance to overall project evaluation are described. Particular emphasis is placed on the liaison that is necessary between the different members of the project team from the preliminary exploration phase through to the completion of the final feasibility study. Metallurgical input at the earliest stage is recommended. The incorporation of metallurgical and marketing data into ore reserve statements and the effect of the metallurgical evaluation on ore reserve classifications are discussed.

Refractory application in the major iron and steelmaking units are discussed. Mechanis- ms of refractory consumption as revealed by pre- vious studies are reviewed and current practice is evaluated. Deficiencies in refractories now in use are noted and some lines of development are indicated. The iron and steelmaking units discussed are generally restricted to those subject to slagging, structural change or erosion at steel or iron making temperatures, and include the Blast Furnace, Hot Blast Stoves, Hot Metal Ladles, Basic Oxygen Furnaces, Continuous Cast- ing Units and Steel Teeming Ladles.

Subsidence data resulting from longwall mining in the northern part of the Newcastle Coalfield of New South Wales has been reviewed. Themain factors influencing subsidence variability in this area (apart from width/height ratio) are strong bridging strata, the effects of the first major goaf fall, mining direction and depth of cover. In 1987 the NSW Department of Mineral Resources produced a guide to subsidence prediction for the Newcastle Coalfield which is still widely used. The current study shows this guide to be no longer appropriate for this area. An alternative prediction curve, incorporating more recent data, is suggested.
