Non-intrusive methods for the reliable determination of dragline bucket and rigging performance have been achieved using physical modelling. Modelling offers a logical first step towards developing mathematical simulation models. The process of physical modelling has been applied successfully to predict dragline bucket performance and capacity as well as to demonstrate the effect of varying dump rope length on performance. ACIRL's Surface Miming Group has used physical modelling to carry out dragline bucket sizing for a new high productivity bucket and compared performance with Throng Coal's existing dragline bucket. The predicted bucket performance has since been confirmed in the field using dragline monitoring techniques.

Asian countries are now facing very crucial aspects of urban living under the recession of the economy. The current situation is such that those hard aspects may make the living standards worse and worse in the next century, unless proper measures are taken on the infrastructure for urban lives. More than half of the population in Asian countries are now living in cities. Nowadays, the socio-economic development of the Asian countries has been closely linked to the development of world economy because of the border-less economy system. The population inflow to big cities is inevitable as the Asian countries step into an industrialised economy. Such a tendency will be further accelerated when Asia becomes a centre of financial business in the 21st century. The government of any country has realised the situation very well. The United Nations has established a specific agency to solve the problems caused by the rapid urbanisation. This global agency for urbanisation is named United Nations Center for Human Settlement and it is so called Habitat. There are three Habitat offices in the world, Nairobi in Kenya, Santiago in Chile and Fukuoka in Japan. The activities of Habitat offices cover a wide field of issues such as housing, urban development, infrastructure and environment, etc. Habitat Fukuoka Office is serving Asia and Pacific in co-operation with the government offices concerned.

The continuous copper drossing process operated at Port Pine since 1962 has had limited copper removal capacity as determined by a maximum tolerable Cu/S ratio in feed and the level of sulphur in blast furnace bullion. Recent process development has been to overcome these limitations to meet increased copper throughput requirements. A sulphur addition system was developed and installed in August 1987. The system has capacity to increase sulphur input by over 150%, meeting the increased copper capacity requirement and also allowing independence from the upstream process for sulphur supply. Developments in process understanding have been applied within the limitations of the existing furnace design with a 10% increase in the maximum tolerable Cu/S ratio.

Geosynclines have been well studied for many years, but very little has been written about the concepts of sedimentary basins in spite of the vast amount of data available. They have been regarded, perhaps, as well- understood intuitively, and therefore not worthy of study. Many of the fundamental concepts of geology were developed during the 19th Century with the construction of coal mines, canals and railways. It was a happy chance that led railway engineers in the early days to think that trains could not climb any but the smallest gradient, so, in Britain at -least, numerous railway cuttings and tunnels were made. These exposed to view and study, in a better form than Nature usually provides, a great deal of interesting geology. Because of the lack of literature about the concepts of sedimentary basins, it is not possible to be sure what the early geologists thought. It seems that sedimentary basins were regarded as recording a history of subsidence during the early stages, when a transgressive sequence accumulated; and a history of uplift during the later stages, when a regressive sequence accumulated. It seemed axiomatic that the age of folding and faulting was younger than the rocks folded or Faulted.

One of the major impacts of using modern mechanised systems of mining is the production of large amounts of extraneous dirt intermixed with the Run of Mine output. The paper out- lines a proposed system of utilizing liquid tailings from coal mines to replace imported cementitious materials used in ground control and various other safety measures. A geotech- nical and cost assessment of the proposed system are also included. The paper concludes that it is possible to utilize processed tailings to cost effectively replace imported packing material for ground control.

A series of experiments was carried out to investigate the solubilities of copper, arsenic, antimony and bismuth in silica-saturated iron silicate slags under controlled oxygen partial pressures at 1200 and 1250¦C. Molten copper containing each of the above elements was kept in contact with a slag in a silica crucible for 24 or 48 hours to attain equilibrium. No me- chanical entrapment of metal into the slag was observed. The appearance of the magnetite phase in the slag was avoided by holding oxygen potentials at substantially lower values than that evaluated from available data on iron silicate slags. Solubilities of copper, arsenic, antimony and bismuth in slags were plotted against oxy- gen potentials and both oxidic and atomic types of dissolution were found, except in the case of arsenic, from the dependencies of the solubili- ties on the oxygen potential and from positive intercepts of regression lines when extra- polated to zero oxygen potential. The dissolu- tion of arsenic seemed mostly oxidic. Distri- bution coefficients of arseò,ic, antimony and bismuth between copper and slag are also Discussed.

The search for economic mineral deposits is becoming more difficult as exploration goes deeper in the established mining camps and spread out to the surrounding covered areas, which may have an `overburden' some hundreds of metres thick. Geophysics is finding an ever increasing role in such exploration. When the target is zinc, the task often becomes even more difficult since sphalerite, the most commonly mined mineral, is non-magnetic, resistive, and relatively light compared to other sulphides. Fortunately, sphalerite commonly occurs in association with other sulphides, which are magnetic and/or conductive and/or heavy, thus most zinc-rich orebodies have at least one contrasting physical property to aid exploration. This paper presents the physical properties of sphalerite and other potentially important zinc minerals. Results of petrophysical measurements of samples from various zinc-rich ores are presented together with examples of geophysical surveys over a number of zinc deposits. The results show that the physical properties are not merely dependent upon the properties of the orebodies' constituent minerals. For example, the small (0.4 Mt) and low-grade (five per cent Zn + three per cent Pb + two per cent other sulphides) Flying Doctor deposit at Broken Hill, New South Wales (NSW) is much more conductive than the large (3+ Mt) and high grade (14 per cent Zn + five per cent Pb) Cadjebut deposit in Western Australia (WA). The mining industry in Western Australia is a large sector of the WA economy providing $12 billion (1993) of the export income for the State. Historically, mining in WA developed from traditional prospecting in the late-1880s leading to major underground operations by the turn of the century. Large open pits were developed in WA following World War II and became increasingly common since the gold boom of the 1980s. With the development of the open pits has been concomitant evolution of mining legislation, principally the Mining Acts of 1904 and 1978, which has been also accompanied by a practical evolution of the administrative system within the Department of Minerals and Energy. The mining industry has recognised the need for sound environmental management at mine sites, taking up the challenge and becoming a world leader in rehabilitation techniques. Any environmental management program in the industry has three stages: approval by government; management by the industry; and return to the State in an environmentally acceptable condition. The WA environmental requirements, procedures and industry performance in these three stages are discussed.

Using a small scale laboratory pilot plant a series of tests have been conducted with the aim of investigating the influence of the zinc/acid ratio on the efficiency of zinc electrodeposition from an acidic sulphate solution. The results have shown that current efficiency is increased as the zinc/acid ratio is increased with no evidence of an optimum zinc/acid ratio. However the choice of a zinc/acid ratio for full scale operations must be a compromise between other parameters, spent electrolyte acidity and power efficiency, which also impact upon plant performance. The effect of various impurities has also been monitored and antimony, nickel and tin have been shown to be deliterious to current efficiency.

The Central Andes in Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina, contain two contiguous terranes which were accreted i, Gondwanaland between the end of the Devonian and the end of the Triassic. These terranes, Arequipa in the north, anni Chilenia in the south, differ from each other in the timing and style of their metallogenic development. However, they contain over 90% of the Central Andean porphyry copper resource. The copper porphyries in the Arequipa terrane are Paleocene to lower Oligocene in age, whereas the Chilenia deposits are mid-upper Cretaceous and mid-upper Miocene. Porphyry copper deposits occur outside these terranes, but are all Miocene in age. Miocene porphyry-style mineralisation also exists in the Arequipa terrane, but is copper-deficient and gold-rich. The accreted terranes may have favoured porphyry and other styles of copper mineralisation because they possessed relatively thin continental crust compared to adjacent parts of the Andes. Crustal thickening which commenced at about 30 Ma in the Arequipa terrane coincided with a major change to polymetallic, precious metal mineralisation which commonly displays high sulfidation charcteristics.

Coal mining in the Illawarra commenced in 1848. By the early twentieth century mining operations were spread over quite a distance along the coast centred on Wollongong. By this time there were already numerous tunnel mines and one shaft mine. Coal was first reported in Illawarra by Lieutenant Flinders on a voyage of exploration, southerly along the coast from Sydney in 1796. Because of the topography, particularly the escarpment and the narrowness of the coastal plain, access from Sydney was not easy by land and the normal access was by sea. It was not until some coastal areas had been developed for agricultural purposes that the mining of the seams on the South Coast commenced for the supp- ly of fuel. The most important mines in the early nineteenth century were Bulli and Osborne Wallsend. In general, coal was won from the tunnel mines and was transported directly, usually by tramway, to the nearest shipping point. Considerable hardship attended the earliest attempts at mining coal in regard to materials for mining and the way of life of the miners in the vicinity of the mines. With the growth of production and the installation of coke ovens at some mines the area, hitherto virgin bush- land, began to take on a more industrialised appearance. Infrastructure is defined as all those parts of a mining development which are not directly concerned with mining and mineral processing. Infrastructure is of significant and growing importance in the overall develop- ment of mines, and the costs could be critical in determining the viability of a project. Prior to_project authorisation, feasibility studies are required, often in considerable detail, to determine costs with adequate reliability. It is necessary that the Engineer should be adequately briefed for carrying out these studies and that good liaison and communication with the Owner be maintained. Methods, costs, order of accuracy, and some special requirements of these studies are discussed. After project authorisation, rapid im- plementation of the proposals is generally desired. A suggested organisation and method for this implementation is presented and dis- cussed. Comments on fees, and particular points in the relationship between Owner and Consulting Engineer are given. Particular reference is made to differences in conditions compared with public works projects. Realistic attitudes of mind towards environmental matters, industrial relations, and contractual relationships are advocated.

Subsidence prediction methods can be divided into two basic types: empirical and analytical. Empirical methods are based largely on a combination of experience, intuition and observations from a large number of observed subsidence data. They are simple in their application, but they are not based on any principle of mechanics. Analytical methods are based on equivalent material modelling principles, where the ground surrounding the extraction is mathematically represented by idealised materials that deform according to the principles of continuum mechanics. Wide applicability and improved understanding are the principal advantages claimed for this approach. In NSW, significant progress has been achieved in the area of subsidence prediction during the last ten years. Empirical prediction curves are available in NSW for predicting the ground movement in the Southern and Newcastle Coalfields. A' comparison of subsidence values predicted from these curves with the actual monitored values indicates that the curves are adequate for use in conjunction with the existing damage assessment methods. Future research for improving the existing empirical prediction curves can only be justified if it is cost effective. There are several numerical models currently in use in NSW for predicting subsidence. The models do not appear to be superior in their ability to predict subsidence when compared with the empirical curves. the performance of these models will no doubt improve along with advances in defining strata properties and failure mechanisms.

The Osborne copper-gold deposit (within the Trough Tank project area) is located in the Cloncurry Shire about 195 kilometres south-east of Mount Isa. It is hosted by Proterozoic metasediments of the Eastern succession of the Mount Isa Inlier. The deposit is overlain by 25-40 metres of Mesozoic cover, so it represents a true "blind target". Placer Exploration has 100% outright ownership of the property, having purchased the remaining 10% interest in the property from Shell in early 1993.Intensive exploration, both surface and via drilling at Osborne, has taken place since 1985, when CSR Limited Mineral Exploration and Development Group (acquired by Placer in 1988) entered into a joint venture with Billiton Minerals. Exploration effort from 1985 to June 1988 outlined a 20 kilometre strike length of magnetic horizons, in what was termed the North-East, Central and Southern anomalies, which were drilled with weak indications of copper-gold mineralization in the North-East anomaly. During the later half of 1989, four core holes were drilled into the shallower northern partofthe North-East anomalywhere previous drilling had outlined economic intersections of mineralization. These holes encountered high-grade copper-gold mineralization confirming the potential for an economic deposit to be hosted within the ironstone sequence. Further drilling involving over 400 holes (100 kilometres of drilling) has brought the deposit up to its present resource status.The current resource inventory is 36 million tonnes grading 2.0% copper and 1.0 grams pertonne gold and includes a high-grade zone of 13 million tonnes grading 3.6% copper and 1.5 grams per tonne gold. The discovery of this potential economic mineralization resulted from a persistent exploration effort based on indications that a large mineralizing system existed within a sequence of ironstones.

The advent and easy availability of fast and powerful digital computers has marked a transition from one era to another in the field of process control in many industries. Mineral processing is no exception. Aims, practices and problems associated with process control of mineral beneficiation plants in the 'old days' are compared with those available at present. Although basic processes remain generally the same, there have been simultaneous social and economic developments, which directly relate to the development and present value of process control. Lower head grades are now treated, plant capacities have increased, and a large proportion of future capital in the mineral industry will be associated with large capacity plant, treating still lower grades. Environmental considerations have pressurised moves to better control in some areas. With these changes, economic operating incentives have changed, and process control has, in many plants, become more critical. Finally, while computer technology has developed recently at a very rapid rate, developments in the fields of instrumentation, basic on-line measurement and sampling have in general lagged behind, limiting the progress possible in process control. Iron ore samples selected from the Deepdale, Iron Prince and Mt. Newman ore bodies have been pelletised on a pilot scale plant and subsequently reduced under laboratory conditions by hydrogen or carbon monoxide. Pellets approximately 1 cm in diameter have been reduced by hydrogen over the temperature range 5000- 900¦C and the results examined by thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron probe and x-ray techniques. After an initial time delay it was found that up to 95% reduction the rate of reduction could be described by a transport con- trolled porous model, in which the effective diffusivities of hydrogen in theòpr¦duct layer and the reaction zone are filar. Independent measurements of effective diffusivity supported the values obtained from the reduction data. ve 95% reduction the rate decreased markedly due to the formation_of retained wustite or fayalite. Comparison with reduction by carbon monoxide over the temperature range 7500 - 900¦C showed that the rate eduction by carbon monoxide was approximately five times slower than the rate by hydrogen. The rate of reduction was found to be a function of the properties of the pellets, which may account for the ely conflicting results that have been obtained in previous investigation on porous pellets.

Australis Mining N.L. operates a continuous mode carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold plant, processing sand and slime tailings from previous gold mining operations in the Norseman area. Plant design is that of conventional countercurrent contact between pregnant pulp and activated carbon. Gold desorption is achieved by the Zadra process using near boiling tempera- tures and atmospheric pressure. Process water is drawn from nearby Lake Cowan (saline). The plant operates at, or above, design specification of 400 dry tonnes per day. This paper describes the plant design and operating processes utilised in optimising throughput and gold recovery. TNTDnPTTnmTnM Favourable world gold prices and substantial reserves of sand and slime tailings prompted Australis Mining N.L. to construct a gold extraction plant during 1981. The projected plant throughput was set so as to complete treatment of available tailings over a three year period. Metal- lurgical tests indicated that, with a regrind facility satisfactory gold recovery could be achieved using a countercurrent CIP process. Reflecting the entry of Australis Mining N.L. into its first large scale treatment operation, the plant design emphasised simplicity but effectiveness of Operation.

Kidston Gold Mine is a 3.5 million tonnes per year operation located 280 kilometres west of Townsville, Queensland. Kidston's ore body consists of 44.3 million tonnes graded at 1.79 grams per tonne gold and 2.22 grams per tonne silver. Full production commenced in March, 1985. During the remainder of 1985, Kidston milled 3.77 million tonnes of ore and produced 213,614 ounces of gold.The ore is comprised of granodiorite, polymictic and volcanic breccias. The degree of oxidation of the rock influences the milling capacity and therefore determines the cut-off grade; ore is categorised as oxide, transition and fresh. The milling rates are 15,400, 12,000 and 9,600 tonnes per day for oxide, transition and fresh ore respectively.The ore is treated in a conventional cyanidation/ carbon-in-pulp plant (CIP). The plant consists of a primary crusher, semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mills, leach circuit and carbon-in-pulp circuit. Carbon stripping and dore smelting are done on site. The major difference between the Kidston plant and other Australian CIP plants is that a cyclone separation and washing circuit rejects half of the dry tonnage as a sand tail prior to CIP treatment. This difference allows the CIP circuit at Ki.dston to be smaller and makes the CIP less sensitive to the grind circuit product size.

Stream sediment geochemical analyses from 140 mining company exploration surveys of the Coromandel, Northwest Nelson, Marlborough and Westland regions of New Zealand have been compiled from open file reports and entered on a database called REGCHEM (for Regional Exploration GeoCHEMistry). REGCHEM is supported by GEOEXPL, a custom-written computer software application which operates under the Microsoft Access relational database mangement system on a PC-type computer. The data are plotted as maps using the Maplnfo geographic information system (GIS) package. Thesholds separating anomolous values from background values are determined using the PROBPLOT univariant statistical package, which enables the descrimination and modelling of several populations. Relevant REGCHEM data are being incorporated into a GIS for the Coromandel region as part of ongoing studies to sevelop mineral deposit and metallogenic models for the region, and to assess regional prospectivity.]

Since 1958 there have been 16 major coal mine explosions in the U.S. claiming 323 lives. Whilst the exact cause of a number of these incidents has not been determined, the majority has involved gas ignitions in one way or another. In addition there have been fatal gas explosions in salt mines and vapor explosions in oil mines. Furthermore, many of the oil shale mines in the U.S. have proven to be gassy giving cause for concern. Compounding these problems is the fact that frictional ignition of methane in coal mines has dramatically increased over the past several years; over 100 such ignitions were reported in 1979. While, no fatalities have been attributed to frictional ignition in the U.S. since early 1978, a recent mine explosion in Nova Scotia which resulted in 11 fatalities was attributed to a frictional face ignition. Research being conducted at the Bureau of Mines is aimed at the prevention and suppression of gas explosions. Emphasis is placed on new coal cutter bits for reducing ignition frequency, machine-mounted water sprays for preventing frictional face ignitions and automatic devices for quenching incipient ignitions and fully developed gas explosions.
