This paper describes recent developments at West Cliff Colliery in environmental monitoring, using a sophisticated computer controlled system. The operations involved in environmental monitoring are described and the equipment employed is detailed. It is anticipated that the monitoring system employed at West Cliff Colliery will be expanded to allow total and instantaneous monitoring of roadway environmental Conditions.

This paper discusses the concepts of core risk associated with mining projects and operations and illustrates the types of core geotechnical risks and consequences that may relate to a range of different mining methods, with recommendations on risk management procedures to ensure that the core risks are under constant and ongoing scrutiny and priority management focus. These core geotechnical risks can and should be identified at the initial mining method selection stage, during a feasibility study. They should form part of the auditing of the project and the decision-making regarding the project viability. They should then be built into the ongoing management structure of the project, right through into ongoing operations, with regular audit and review.

The coal under the ridgeline is the most valuable part of the known reserve at Solid EnergyÆs Stockton Opencast Mine. Some ridgeline mining had been attempted in the past with mixed results. Solid Energy recognised that significant project planning was required in order to overcome the formidable technical issues associated with mining the area. It also recognised that the local community also had concerns about the potential impacts of this work including the visual impact of changing the topography of the ridgeline and the nearness of the Department of Conservation estate.   This paper outlines some of the risks and challenges that were faced and the management approaches that were adopted to address them.

Sub-level caving with bottom ore drawing has gained wide acceptance in rich, soft, low magnetic iron ores because it provides moderate ore dilution and ore losses. The main problem here is the high rock pressure exerted on sub-level drives situated in the sub-level sill pillars. To reduce this effect, the ore block is divided into panels. This paper illustraes the method of determining the maximum panel width providing low maintenance cost of sub-level drives.

In pursuit of optimising the cemented rockfill system fragmentation of the aggregate, while travelling through the surface-to-underground aggregate transport raise, was investigated and a æfines estimationÆ equation was determined. When used with the rockfill strength estimation equation, the fines estimation equation enables an accurate estimation of the compressive strength to be derived theoretically. Optimum fill raise orientation was examined and recommendations are given depending on the varying stope dimensions. If the maximum dimension of the stope is less than 30.5 m (100 ft), a single, centrally located fill raise will suffice. However, as the stope dimensions increase, the number and orientation of the fill raises becomes more complicated and each stope must be examined on an individual basis.

The models are based on a simple index, TT which approxi- mates the rate of growth of the people's living standards. However, for application in the mining industry it is necessary to incorporate various parameters to account for the dynamic charges in the geological, mining and other technological conditions. The increasing demand for underground cooling in South African gold mines has resulted in various cooling methods being con- sidered, including the use of ice. Two main areas in connection with ice cooling systems are being investigated. The first concerns the efficient and cost effective production of ice on a larger scale than previously required for any other application. The second con- cerns the transportation of ice in pipes from surface ice-making machines to underground melting sites.

To assist in the evaluation of different haulage systems, a truck haulage simulation model has been developed at BHP Melbourne Research Laboratories. A selection of Australian washed coal samples was examined to determine the effect of sample hydrophobicity (rank) and particle size on froth stability in the flotation process. The results indicate distinct rank-based variations in froth volume and stability for flotation tests conducted without the use of collector, over a series of particle size distributions.High-rank coals showed a greater tendency to generate stable, high-volume froths than coals of lower rank. Implications for circuit design and operation are outlined.

Gretley Colliery is situated at Wallsend, a suburb of Newcastle in New South Wales and is owned and operated by the Newcastle Wallsend Coal Ccnpany, a wholly owned subsidiary of Peko Wallsend Limited. The mine has been an efficient bord and pillar producer by industry standards. However, its continued economic viability was threatened because the bulk of remaining reserves lie in more difficult mining conditions and are of poorer quality. At Renison Limited, on the West Coast of Tasmania, modern trackless decline mining is practised to exploit the various tin bearing sulphide deposits. With footwall accesses, one of three adaptations of horizontal mechanised cut and fill, 1. unsupported, 2. pillar supported,and 3. unsupported - resuing is used to stope each defined ore block. The stoping method is basically determined by the dip and true thickness of the ore with emphasis on high ore recovery. Extreme flexibility is possible by the selective mining of stope lifts, the consumption of development waste as fill and the utilisation of the same mobile equipment in all phases of production. This has resulted in high productivity and low cost per tonne of ore.

The integration of iron rejection as hematite with the Sherritt two-stage zinc pressure leach process has been investigated on the laboratory scale. The two-stage pressure leach process is applicable for a greenfield zinc plant, or for replacement of the conventional roast-leach circuit in an existing zinc plant. An excess of zinc concentrate is used to accomplish acid neutralisation in the first stage of pressure leaching, and the residual concentrate in the first stage residue is treated with an excess of acid solution in the second stage of pressure leaching to yield high zinc extraction. Integration of hematite precipitation with this process allows for the potential sale of the iron residue, greatly decreasing the residue disposal problem. Two flowsheets containing the desirable features of both of these processes are described in this paper, along with laboratory Results.

A sample of pyritic gold concentrate was investigated by wet chemical and electron optical techniques. Sub-samples were roasted in a laboratory scale fluidized bed roaster in the temperature range 400-700¦C. The calcine was characterised, and cyanide-leached using a standard bottle rolling test. Gold extraction efficiencies varied with roasting temperature. At temperatures of 400 and 450¦C gold ex- tractions of less than 40% were achieved, but between 500-700¦C the extraction had increased to 93--98Z. The surface area of the calcine varied with roasting temperature, reaching a maximum at 500¦C. There was no correlation between the surface area of the calcine and the efficiency of gold extraction.

The impact of non-ferrous smelters on their local surroundings is well monitored and guarded by various actors: the owners looking for profitability, the villagers looking for employment, the consumers asking for ever cheaper products and services, the government collecting taxes and all cherishing the environmental impact. Recent challenges facing the industry are various new doomsday projections: that we will be running out of base metals, that the ground we dwell on will be contaminated by the use of products. Smelters, such as BolidenÆs R÷nnskSr Smelter have a long history of increasing non-ferrous resources by recycling. It is shown that extraction and recycling of metals together with energy recovery can be integrated in a modern, profitable and clean smelter. Examples of efforts to further improve the business will be discussed such as flowsheet rationalisation, environmental investments, new feed from recycling and energy utilisation.

The economic future of the Palmer Goldfield lies with both the gold mining and the tourist industries. An equitable solution to the competition between the two involves putting a dollar value on the historical evidence there for our Australian heritage.On 23 October 1986 the Queensland Government gazetted the Palmer River Reserves R16 of 16 200 hectares, in recognition of the competing land uses emerging in the region. The intention is that historically significant gold mining sites and relics will be preserved in situ with provision for continued gold exploration and mining.This paper explores and explains the administrative process of achieving a set of Management Guidelines for Rl6 within the Queensland political milieu. The result of that process is the achievement of some of the highest preservation standards in Australia, prohibiting surface disturbance of defined Category 1 sites, and no mining proposal has yet been refused approval.The Palmer Goldfield R16 experience is a major step in achieving a co-ordinated approach to both current mining and preservation of Queensland's mining heritage.
