A genetic model for the genesis of high-grade (>65 wt per cent Fe) Proterozoic, banded iron formation (BIF)-related iron deposits such as the Tom Price, Mount Whaleback deposits in the Hamersley Province (Australia), the N4E, N4W, N5 deposits at Carajßs (Brazil), the Aguas Claras, Conceitpo, and Casa de Pedra deposits in the Iron Quadrangle (Brazil), the Donkerpoort West, Kwagas East deposit in the Thabazimbi iron ore district (South Africa), or the Saksagan ore field at Krivoy Rog (Ukraine), needs to take into account the: timing of regional metamorphism with respect to the upgrade of BIF to high-grade iron ore; significance and relationship of the proto-ore to the hydrothermal alteration minerals and zonation and the process of iron enrichment; source and oxidation state of the hydrothermal fluids that caused the iron enrichment; types of geochemical processes that caused the hydrothermal alteration and iron enrichment; and significance of the widespread carbonatisation of the host rocks as a prerequisite for high-grade BIF-related iron mineralisation.We argue that a unifying model for high-grade BIF-related iron deposits cannot, presently, adequately explain the geological and geochemical characteristics observed in these deposits and, therefore, provide two end-member models that take into account the diversity of geological and geochemical ore deposit features. Our discrete model for the genesis of high-grade, BIF-related iron deposits is based on the interpreted tectonic setting, distinct hydrothermal fluid source of, and processes observed in, major BIF-related iron deposits. We divide two end-members: Proterozoic deep fault-magmatic (Carajßs) type, and Proterozoic rift-basin (Hamersley) type.Both end-members experienced varying degrees of deep weathering episodes that effected the hypogene enrichment and, ultimately, yielded the high-grade iron ore mined in many places today.

The Miwah prospect lies on the dilational 070¦ trending Miwah Lineament near its intersection with northerly oriented fractures within Pliocene volcanic rocks exposed between a NW trending segment of the dextral transcurrent Sumatra Fault, and the more northerly trending Samalanga-Sipopok Fault to the east. These faults reflect the continued interaction between stresses from the India-Australia plate located to the southwest, and spreading within the Andaman Sea to the north of Sumatra. A system of deep seated faults is believed to have facilitated emplacement of post-Miocene magmas and Quaternary volcanic centres at shallow crustal levels throughout northern Sumatra.

I know the theme of the Congress is "The 21st Century - Mining for Mankind" but I hope you will understand why my address touches upon some near-term issues as well. With the world oil market the way it is at present, "the long term" seems to be next week and no one is even sure what will happen tomorrow! So I am going to take a little licence with the theme of the Congress and talk about some fundamental issues that have much to do with the current uncertainties. The ways in which these issues are resolved and the role governments elect to play in the next few years will determine both the shape of the petroleum industry in the 1990s and beyond and the success with which we can confront a growing and inevitable future dependence on OPEC oil resources. But just in case you are not familiar with what has been happening in the petroleum industry recently and why the future seems more uncertain than ever, let me show you the gyrations in oil prices over the past 13 years, and remember that it is only another 13 years or so years to the 21st Century.

The Hodgkinson Province forms the northern part of the Tasman Orogen and contains the most extensive outcrops of Silurian - Devonian rocks in Queensland. Deep-water, marine siliciclastic sequences (mainly turbidites) dominate most of the province except near the western margin where mafic volcanics and fossiliferous limestones characterise much of the succession. It is difficult to apply normal stratigraphic mapping techniques to the Hodgkinson Province because of extensive stratal disruption by numerous thrust faults, the general lack of stratigraphic and structural markers, and the unfossiliferous nature of much of the succession. Nevertheless, several distinct units have been delineated although their internal stratigraphy or boundary or superpositional relationships are uncertain. Ordovician strata, as well as two major unconformities have been recognised in the western part of the province. Several models have been proposed to explain the evolution of the Hodgkinson Province. Although there is no general agreement most recent researchers favour an extensional tectonic regime.

Following asmallnumberofpollutionincidents involving the death of cattle from ingestion of cyanide that had escaped from gold processing plants, the Queensland Government undertook to develop competent guidelines addressing this problem. These guidelines, "Queensland Government Guidelines on Prevention of Water Pollution from Cyanide Use in Gold Ore Processing", issued by the Department of Environment and Heritage, Department of Resource Industries and Water Resources Commission, cover hydrology and general house-keeping intended to reduce the likelihood of significant impact from a spill or unintentional dis- charge of contaminated material. There are three major advances for Queensland embodied in this Guideline: ò the use of a design approach that gives site specific standards rather than trying to give a multitude of standards broad enough to cover all situations, ò the use of hazard assessment and a "critical period" hydrologi- cal design technique, and ò new monitoring and reporting requirements. Magneto flotation is a recently developed method aimed at simultaneous utilisation of the magnetic and flotation properties of minerals in separation processes. In this method, magnetic minerals are prevented from reporting to the froth product while non-magnetic minerals are being floated. With suitable ores, this makes it possible to reduce or entirely eliminate the cleaning and scavenging operations that are otherwise necessary in conventional flotation and magnetic separation systems. This paper describes the testing of magneto flotation on a Canadian magnetite ore. The ore sample used in the experimental work contained a total of 32.89 per cent Fe of which 87.60 per cent was magnetic in the form of magnetite. Magnetoflotation yielded, in a single step, a final concentrate assaying 69.10 per cent Fe and with an overall recovery of 84.84 per cent representing a magnetic iron recovery of 96.39 per cent. Comprehensive comparisons were made with conventional magnetic separation and flotation, and it was found that with these methods at least four processing steps were required to achieve results similar to those obtained with single-stage Magnetoflotation.

Measuring cyanide in the leach liquors associated with high copper and/or sulfide ores is a non-trivial exercise. It is well known that copper complexes with cyanide and reduces the amount of cyanide available for gold leaching. What is not so well known is that the rhodanine end point overestimates the amount of cyanide available for leaching in the presence of copper. Sulfide ions also interfere with a rhodanine end point titration, although this is less of a problem as the black silver sulfide precipitate formed clearly indicates to the operator that something is wrong. Thiosulfate, which forms readily from the alkaline oxidation of sulfides, causes an overestimation of the cyanide available for leaching due to the formation of Ag(S2O3)-. The net result of these observations is that rhodanine is rarely of value as an end point indicator in complex solutions. It generally overestimates the amount of cyanide available, providing plant metallurgists with a false sense of security. Potentiometric titrations are generally much more capable of accurately measuring cyanide in complex solutions. The interfering effect of copper can be resolved and it is even possible to estimate the copper concentration using the inflexions associated with the titration of CN- + Cu(CN)43- versus Cu(CN)32-. Using the potentiometric method sulfide ions can be determined before the cyanide measurement is made due to the formation of AgS2, although the electrode will foul with repeated measurements. Thiosulfate can also be distinguished from cyanide with a potentiometric titration. Rhodanine and potentiometric titrations are both affected by the pH of the liquor. At pH 9.2 half the cyanide will be present as CN- and half as HCN(aq) with only the CN- being titratable. This does not hold in the presence of a buffer active around pH 9. In the presence of sufficient buffer, both the CN- and HCN(aq) are titrated. Ca(OH)+ may buffer the pH when large amounts of lime have been added.

Expansion of central production facilities at the Kutubu Petroleum Development Project in Papua New Guinea (PNG) required excavation of a steep hillside overlooking operating crude oil processing, storage and pumping facilities. Drilling and blasting were used to remove a large volume of rock which varied from hard limestone to soft sandstone, with zones of soft clay and many underground caverns. Similar ground conditions had made it very difficult to predict and control blast-ing results during previous excavation in this area.Special conditions of the project included restrictions on ground vibration levels at a high pressure oil pipeline and pump station within 100m of the blasting area, and a prohibition on any flyrock. As work progressed, some blasting was necessary with 20m of installations being constructed on the levelled project site. Thus blast design, drilling and charging were carefully controlled to avoid any incidents which could interfere with oil production or progress of the construction project.

Vitrokele technology is a resin process that can be applied in gold plants to reduce both capital and operating costs. The Vitrokele resin can be used for both precious metal recovery and for recovering free and combined cyanide from effluent streams. Vitrokele resin has been extensively tested at pilot plant level and is now applied successfully at a commercial heap leach facility in Zimbabwe where it is used in place of activated carbon for recovery of gold from pregnant leach solution. Significant capital cost savings were achieved by installation of a resin plant instead of a conventional carbon adsorption plant. Operation to-date has not seen any significant physical or chemical degradation of the resin either in terms of adsorption capacity/kinetics or physical appearance/size. This gold recovery process is equally applicable to slurry streams where it would be implemented in stirred tanks with interstage screens in a similar manner to a conventional carbon adsorption plant.

Around 35 Mt of industrial clays were produced in 1994 under the broad classifications kaolin (25 Mt), bentonite (8 Mt) and attapulgite/sepiolite (2 Mt). A brief review of world sources and markets is given as background to Australia's small production (0.5 Mt) but developing interest in industrial clays. Clay markets have changed significantly over the past 30 years resulting initially in consolidation and expanded production from traditional high-grade clay sources but also creating opportunities for development of new discoveries. Decline in the use of clay-based refractories has come at a time of strong growth in demand for refined kaolin for the paper industry. Traditional markets for bentonite as oil drilling muds, iron ore pelletising and foundry bond sands are mature and in overall decline. Today, bentonite has a significant share of the growth market in pet litter which a few years ago was dominated by attapulgite/sepiolite clays. Both bentonite and attapulgite/sepiolite have good prospects for increased demand in environmental markets both in containment of hazardous wastes and sorption of toxic substances. In common with all industrial minerals, markets for clay minerals will demand continuous improvement in product quality and consistency. Development of new and improved products will be increasingly the responsibility of the raw material supplier. In order to remain competitive, this will require a substantial commitment to quality assurance and research and development. Increase in market share will come for those producers able to translate developments in their products to cost savings or increased competitiveness for the industries that they Supply.

This paper compares the designs of heap leach facilities for four precious metal mining projects in the southwestern United States. These four proposed projects are of small-to medium-size relative to other operating mines in the United States, and are either permitted or in the final stages of permitting. The differences and similarities in the heap leach facility designs are compared with respect to site conditions, operating conditions and regulatory requirements. This comparison provides a summary of the state-of-practice for heap leach facility design in the southwestern United States and identifies current issues in project development and process material containment.

INTRODUCTION The association of methane with coal has been known almost since coal was first mined and in general it has been considered the curse of underground coal mining. Historically, most of the effort to handle this methane has been directed at diluting it to a safe level and preventing an explosive mixture of methane and oxygen from forming in any part of the mine. This is generally achieved by in-mine activites. This approach has two principal drawbacks, the severity of which are dependent on local conditions. The first is that the activity associated with the handling of the methane is undertaken in the mine and there- fore competes with the mining activity for the limited space available. The second drawback is that the whole methane handling activity is generally a cost to the coal because methane is so diluted that it cannot be used. Valuers will often intuitively express the probability that property value will exceed a certain amount . . . 'I think the chances that the value will exceed $50 million are excellent. The chances that they will exceed $80 million are poor'. This paper shows how it is possible to combine the uncertainties of the value of several key items to provide an estimate of the probability of a certain overall value being achieved. The valuation of a large copper/gold deposit was naturally influenced by uncertainties in the base assumptions of costs and metal prices. Potential acquisition of the property through share purchase raised the issue of what was a reasonable intrinsic value for the shares. Market considerations could be used to appropriately adjust the intrinsic value. After a range of possible metal prices and operating costs were determined, estimates were made of their probable distributions. By combining these probabilities in a random selection, a range of property values was calculated. Each value had its respective probability of occurrence. This allowed a most likely value of shares to be calculated. This paper demonstrates how the valuer's intuition is complemented by numerical analysis.

A review of all major TBM projects from 1974 to 1990 has been undertaken and the results entered into a database. A similar database was prepared from information obtained from a principal TBM manufacturer covering the period 1952 to 1990. The database includes information such as machine specifications, machine performance data, tunnel specifications and ground characteristics. The database can be used as a guide to gauge potential machine performance in a range of ground conditions and tunnel geometries. The review also indicates that current TBM technology is limited to certain ground strength conditions.

The laboratory-scale reduction of fixed beds of iron ore pellets has been investigated over a range of experimental conditions. The effects of reduction temperatures, gas compos- itions and flowrates on 1) the rate of reduction and 2) the physical properties of the metallized products after reduction are being studied as part of a general programme aimed at the evaluation of the use of gaseous reductants for the direct reduction of Australian iron ores. This paper deals primar- ily with the effects of temperature on the rate of reduction using a H2/CO gas mixture. The physical properties of the metallized products such as strength after reduction, abrasion resistance and porosity are presented as functions of the reducing temperature.

The results of calibration trials conducted on parachute stoppings under a recently completed NERD&DC grant are presented. Applications of parachute stoppings, for rapid regulation and control of ventilation networks are described including use in mine recoveries, sealing sections and rescue work. Parachute stoppings are one of a series of non-rigid ventilation control structures specifically designed for quick installation in emergency situations, for use in high production/rapid advance areas and areas suffering roof-floor convergence.

The Mount Morgan massive sulphide body occurs in a volcanic sequence of Lower or Middle. Devonian age, which is subdivided in the mine into "Upper mine porphyries", "Banded mine sequence", and "Lower mine porphyries". This sequence is intruded by latite, Mount Morgan Tonalite (360 million years), and late Permian dykes. Distribution of macroscopic ore textures and minerals in the orebody are discussed and evidence is presented indicating the pre-Tonalite, Devonian age of the orebody.
