The Comstock Lode, a world-class precious metal vein district near Virginia City in western Nevada, U.S.A. (Fig. 1), produced 8.3 million ounces (0.28 X 106 kg) of gold and 193 million ounces (6.56 X 106 kg) of silver during the period 1859 to present (Bonham and Papke, 1969). More than 95% of production was from the Comstock fault, while the adjacent Silver City, Occidental and Flowery vein systems produced about $10 million (U.S.). Within the Comstock fault high-grade ore bodies, or bonanzas, were distributed over 2.3 miles (3.8 km) along strike and persisted to >3000 feet (>900 m) below the surface (Fig. 2). Bonanzas consisted of as much as 1.4 million tons (1.3 million tonnes) of ore grading up to 1.9 oz./ton (65 gm/ton) Au and 30 oz./ton (1020 gm/ton) Ag (Table 1). Some bonanzas occurred in the main Comstock fault plane while others, including the highest grade bonanzas, formed in hangingwall frac- tures. After 1880 most ore consisted of lower-grade vein material surrounding mined- out bonanzas and large volumes of mineralized vein and wall rock in the Comstock hanging- wall that were mined from open cuts. Deep mining was hindered by large quantities of hot water and bad ground which ultimately defined the limits of underground production. The widths and richness of Comstock bonanzas strongly influenced U.S. mining law, milling and underground mining methods, and securi- ties regulations that are in practice today. Within the district Mesozoic metasedimentary rocks, metavolcanic rocks, and granitic in- trusions are overlain by Miocene volcanic rocks (Thompson and White, 1964). Veins cut all lithologies. It is a great privilege to be invited to give this address at this centenary conference. A centenary is a time for recollection, for celebration and for looking ahead. The AusIMM has much to celebrate and many things to recall. I hope in this address to make some useful comments about Australia's future (and mindful of but not forgetting New Zealand), looking ahead for 25 years or so, and the mining industry's role in that future.

Pyrrhotite is pyrophoric when in a finely divided form. The problems of disposing of large quantities of finely divided pyrrhotite separated out by metallurgical processing from ore are formidable. In the case of an underground mine, a solution to the problem of disposal is to place the pyrrhotite in the stoped out areas and seal from any air supply. Further, the pyrrhotite could be diluted with tailings which would reduce the possibility of combust- ion. Several enquiries to various centres and authorities have shown that the products of the slow oxidation of pyrrhotite with moisture present can cement an inert matrix into a stable fill similar in physical prop- erties to fill stabilised with Portland cement. Stabilised fill can be used to advan tage with a suitable mining method to provide high recovery. The investigation demonstrated that air and 15% w/w water must be present for the fill to harden and that the sizing of the particles is a critical factor in drainage of a hydraul- ically placed fill and subsequent even harden- ing of the fill in a stope. With the materials used in the experiments in which the - 51 micron component of the tailings had been dis- carded, an optimum mix was found to contain 4:1 tailings/slag ratio and an overall pyrr hotite concentration of 8% (all proportion by weight). Approximately 34 days after drain- age to 15% moisture in natural air flow condit- ions, an unconfined compressive strength of 1.862 MPa was attained. A subsequent experi- ment was conducted with a sample of optimum mix in a pipe one metre long in forced air flow conditions. At a superficial velocity of 3.Om per hour the mix required 155 hours to harden to 1.862 MPa after drainage to 15% w/w moisture content. The pressure drop bet- ween the top and bottom of the mix in the pipe remained constant at 9 KPa/metre length. This result suggests that forced air flow conditions will increase the rate of hardening. No dangerous effluents were detected in the course of the experiments which could affect mine equipment or personnel.

A belt of volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits and occurrences extends for over 150 km along the southern margin of the Yukon-Tanana terrane in the eastern Alaska Range. The VMS bodies occur mainly in the Jarvis Creek Glacier subterrane (JCGS), one of the highest structural/ stratigraphic levels of the Yukon-Tanana terrane. The JCGS consists of a VMS--bearing metavolcanic rock member and a metasedimentary rock member. The VMS deposits and enclosing rocks exhibit two periods of regional metamorphism.From northwest to southeast, the major VMS districts are the Bonnifield, Hayes Glacier, McGinnis Glacier, and Delta districts. The Bonnifield, Hayes and McGinnis Glacier district sulfide bodies consist of pyrrhotite and lesser amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, with or without arsenopyrite, sphalerite and galena. The larger, 800 km Delta district deposits and occurrences contain variable amounts of pyrite and pyrrhotite and lesser amounts of primarily chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, and arsenopyrite.The sulfide accumulations are interpreted as Kuroko-like deposits that formed along the submarine volcanic part of a Devonian, continental-margin igneous arc. U-Pb isotopic data from zircons from the metavolcanic rocks indicate an age of about 370 Ma (Devonian). 207Pb/204Pb ratios for sulfides from the districts are similar and indicate lead was in part derived from first cycle sediments eroded largely from Precambrian crystalline rocks. 207Pb/204Pb ratios from feldspars in Devonian metavolcanic rocks are similar to those in sulfides, and indicate incorporation of radiogenic Precambrian lead into the Devonian magmas. A Precambrian crystalline source for quartz in metasedimentary rocks is indicated by 2.3 Ga old zircons. Common-lead isotope studies of igneous phenocrysts in metaigneous rocks and sulfides in volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits indicate a unique isotopic signature. The data permit an exotic origin of the Yukon-Tanana terrane with respect to North America.

In the last three decades various theories have been presented to allow the estimation of the force required to cut rock. These have generally relied on an hypothesised mechanism of chip formation.The paper presents results of an experimental program completed on an unjointed artificial rock in which the force and chip geometry were measured during deep cutting with a quarter scale bulldozer tyne. The program included various depths of cut and artificial rock of varying strength. The experimental results are compared with predictions based on three expressions for cutting force. Generally the measured forces are within the range of those predicted but none of the methods predicts the cutting force with any accuracy. It is considered that the discrepancies are due, in part, to the fact the that actual shape of the chip formed in deep cutting is quite different to that assumed in developing the theories and thus the theories cannot be expected to predict the cutting forces. It is concluded that Evans and Nishimatsu's theories predict lower bound estimates of the horizontal cutting forces. Deliac and Fairhurst's approach appears to over estimate the forces required to cut rock. New methods of prediction are required based on the observed mechanisms of failure.

The heavy medium cyclone plant for the preconcentration of silver-lead-zinc ore prior to grinding and flotation was commissioned in August 1982. This paper details the measures taken to get the plant up to design performance which involved modifications to the medium densifying and slimes clarifying sections. Operating experiences to date are described with emphasis on the low medium consumption recorded and severe wear on process equipment.

Porphyry-related skarns are common around thePacific Rim. Examples include Cadia and Goonumbla (Australia) Ok Tedi (PNG) and Ertsberg and Grasberg (Indonesia). Although usually treated as separate to the adjacent porphyry copper-gold (Cu-Au) deposit, skarns near porphyry deposits are commonly inextricably part of the larger Cu-Au system(s). Using Cadia as the primary example, we demonstrate that large, zoned, calc-silicate skarns necessitate very large porphyry systems. The Big Cadia and Little Cadia Fe-Cu-Au skarns are associated with the Late Ordovician to Early Silurian high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic Cadia Intrusive Complex (CIC). Together, these skarns total ~40 Mt of Cu-Au ore but are much smaller than the adjacent Cadia EastûFar East, Cadia Hill, and Ridgeway porphyry-related Cu-Au deposits. Historically these skarns were large, economically significant and highly controversial deposits. Porphyry-related skarns typically have well-developed calc-silicate and ore zonation. At Cadia, classic skarn zonation has been mapped between Cadia Quarry (proximal) and Big Cadia (distal). Over this 800 minterval, mineralogy trends from: proximal garnet > pyroxene, grading to; fe-oxide-rich skarn; and distal haematite-epidote-rich skarn. At Little Cadia, analogous but symmetrical alteration zonation is present. Big Cadia formed from fluids that migrated laterally within calcareous units and were sourced from strongly altered quartz monzonite phases of the CIC at Cadia Quarry. Isotope studies and mass-balance calculations suggest that prograde and retrograde skarn alteration was caused by magmatic dominated fluids. They also indicate that the mapped alteration system at Cadia Quarry is insufficient to account for the total volume of Fe present at Big Cadia. Despite the typically oxidised nature of many porphyry systems, not all skarns in the porphyry environment are oxidised. Assimilation of carbonaceous sediment by hydrous, alkaline intrusions could lead to reduced Au skarns rather than porphyry deposits. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. May I, at the very outset of this second gathering, congratulate the Institute on the great progress that has been made in the interval. At the first meeting in New Zealand in the year 1903, I understand that less than 20 persons were present, and now in the large concourse before me I believe there are not fewer than 140 persons, while if every member of the Institute to-day where here there would be over 500 which is a great change from a membership of only 250 in 1903. At 4 MPa gas pres ure and 30°C the sorptive capacity of 10 selected Australian dried coal ranges from 17 to 23 m3/tonne of CH4 and 27 to 36 m3/tonne of CO2. Values for moist coals are about 25 per cent less. At 20°C, sorptive capacities are about 18 per cent greater. No clear relationship between coal rank and sorptive capacity was established.The permeability of coal to gas is dramatically reduced by progressive hydrostatic confinement. No single 'permeability' for a coal can be established because of relative affinities of coals and the gases (Ar, CH4 and CO2) used in experiments. Bedding plane permeability is significantly greater than permeability normal to bedding. Dependent on gas/coal combinations, permeabilities without confinement ranged from 150 to 0.05 millidarcies, and with 8 MPa hydrostatic confinement from 1.0 to 0.001 md. Generally, permeability is increased by reduction in temperature, and reduced by increase in moisture as one changes from Ar through CH4 to CO2. In retrospect, it is preferable to ubject permeability sample to 8 MPa hydrostatic stress only once, because changes occur in the samples and it is difficult to use other gases successively.The initial rate of desorption, DP, does not appear to be a reliable index of proneness to instantaneou outbursts for Australian coals.The methods used for determining quantitative gas-coal properties appear suitable and reliable for testing other coals.

East Guangdong tin province overlaps the southmost part of the mesozoic magmatic arcof continental margin type in Southeast China and is dominated by mesozoic syntectic magmatism,which associated to tin mineralization. It is distinguished from Nanling tin province but quite close to NW Bolivian tin province in both tectonic and magmatic relations.Tin deposit's mostly of cassiterite-sulfide, cassiterite-silicate formations are localized along exsocontact zone of granitoid batholith or stock, boundary area of volcanic depression, or, within volcanic edifice. Petrochemistry studies show tin was concentrated as intermediate-acidic magma evolved by fractional crystallization. Xiling tin deposit of vein type related to extrusive... the lava dome was formed at T C 221-301 and at very shellow depth,seems to correspond to type A in classification for Bolivia tin deposits by J.N.Grant. Tashan tin deposit of dissemination type related to hypergene intrusive facies,with mineralization occured in endocontact zone of granite porphyry dykes is considered as porphyry type,which spported by H-0 isotope and gas-liquid inclusion evidences. It formed at T C 250-430, comparable to Bolivia porphyry tin deposits,but at a greater depth 1.3 3.0km.A model for known tin deposits in East Guangdong was worked out. A good prospecting perspective was revealed for the potential type of tin deposit in East Guangdong--subvolcanic porphyry tin deposit.

It must be stressed that the following comments are offered only to assist mineral industry professionals in understanding the issues involved in personal liability. The information and views expressed herein are not intended to be a comprehensive guide or definitive statement of the law and they should not be regarded as a substitute for specific advice for individual situations. Readers should consult their own legal and other professional advisers before applying the content of this paper to their own particular circumstances. It is hardly news that work in the mining industry is governed by a complex regulatory and legal system which is constantly changing, but few realise just how directly they can be affected and become personally liable for any breaches. These may result in civil or criminal proceedings and personal assets are at risk. Owners, company directors, managers and now employees are at risk, together with consultants, contractors and suppliers of equipment or consumables, as well as government inspectors. They are liable for their personal decisions to act (or failure to act) in managing operations or carrying out directions, as well as for the actions of others under their control. This paper identifies the areas where such individuals in the open pit mining industry in Australia face the risk of personal liability and measures which can be used to minimise the risk or which can be used to make out a defence to legal action which could arise. There have always been a myriad of Commonwealth, State and Local Government laws and regulations with which to comply, and now international protocols are being used as a basis to impose greater obligations on all people. Once, the `corporate veil' gave some protection to the individual, but today there is negligible protection from the full force of the law. Not only are there various types of law enforcement officers, but public interest groups, shareholders, customers, suppliers, creditors etc may litigate. This paper is not intended to be an exhaustive discussion of the provisions of all the legislation or case law where individuals can be held) personally liable. These areas would include environmental, pollution and heritage law (including Aboriginal sacred sites); occupational health and safety (including workers' compensation) law; trade practices and fair trading law; contract law; corporations law (including the requirements of the Australian Stock Exchange [ASX] and Australian Securities Commission [ASC]); industrial relations law; anti-discrimination and sexual harassment law; taxation (including superannuation trustee) law; and the Common Law. The focus is on the following areas of regulation, which are outside the usual experience of those in the open pit mining industry (the Mining Acts and Regulations are specifically not dealt with here): ò Environment Law; ò Trade Practices Law; ò Occupational Health and Safety Law; and ò Corporations Law.

Geological models for the exploration and evaluation of epithermal Au and porphyry Cu-Au deposits rely upon a classification of different deposit styles and an understanding of the evolutionary processes of deposit formation. These models guide the interpretation of subsurface deposit anatomy in order to target drill testing and assist the explorationist to focus on the more prospective projects. It is important for the explorationist to distinguish between different styles of magmatic arc Au deposits as each style displays distinctive characteristics with exploration implications. Magmatic arc Au deposits are distinguished as porphyry Cu-Au formed at depths of 1 - 2 km at the apophysis to larger, buried, magmatic sources which are also the ultimate metal sources for the varying styles of shallower level epithermal Au deposits. Low sulfidation epithermal Au deposits characteristically develop from dilute circulating meteoric waters and are distinguished as the group with a closer relationship to intrusive source rocks, and slightly higher sulfide contents (still generally

The correct design and effective operating strategies of metallurgical plants require a constant analysis of data gathered for process control, or for due accountability. Conventional, oldfashion statistical tools often fall short of helping management, either because they are too complicated and ambiguous, or because they fail to address structural problems leading to causes of setbacks. This paper focuses on three statistical tools known for their practicality and the in-depth perspective they offer in attempts to retrieve important information from existing data. These tools also provide a better appreciation of the importance of carefully selected data quality objectives. Chronological data are meticulously gathered and stored at considerable expense: They have value, and it is the duty of management to take full advantage of them. These three selected tools are the variogram and its auxiliary functions, the moving average and its auxiliary functions, and the relative difference plot. This paper offers solutions, and a reference for managers to optimise metallurgical plants.

Being inclined to metaphors, one could be forgiven to think that politicians act this verb and captain the Nation's ship into some definite course. In the case of at least the mineral resources industry, it seems that there are not many James Cook followers in our parliaments: Australia's approach to mineral and energy policy is often chaotic - witness the 1935 to 1961 ban on iron ore export-ing which prevented the development of a significant steel industry at time when the World was hungry for this metal, just to mention one amongst many other examples.The follies of Australia's mineral policies are well il-lustrated in the case of uranium mining. Although Australia had the Western World's largest economic reserves of uranium, it is onlythefifth producing nation and its uranium potential is largely unrealised. At the root of this situation are the interventionist attitudes and policies of successive Federal Governments which for more than four decades distorted the Investment decision and, in more recent times. discouraaed investment.

THE slag from the blast furnaces having been granulated, a representative sample is taken to the sample mill. It is then dried, crushed through a 100-mesh screen, intimately mixed, and packeted for assay purposes.METHOD OF ANALYSISINSOLUBLEWeigh 1 grm. of the finely-pulverized slag into a 3t-in. casserole, moisten with a little water to prevent sticking, cover with a clock glass, and add 20 cc. of hot acid (1 HNOs, 3 HCI, 4 H2 0). Evaporate slowly to dryness on a hot plate and bake (without overheating) until all the gelatinous silica is dehydrated. Cool, add 20 cc. HCI (1-1), and boil gently for several minutes; filter into a 300-cc. beaker, cleaning out the casserole thoroughly with a rubber-tipped glass rod. Wash residue with hot distilled water and transfer it to a No. 1 porcelain crucible. Dry, ignite, cool in a desiccator and weigh as total insoluble matter. Dilute filtrate to 200 cc. and neutralize some of the excess HCI with NHa.OH. Warm, and pass H2S for 15 min. Filter and wash withhot water. Boil off H2 S, oxidize with 5 cc. HNOll , reduce bulk of the solution by evaporation. to about 100 cc., and transfer to a 250 cc. flask.SILICAFuse insoluble residue over a blast lamp in a platinum crucible with three or four times its weight of anhydrous carbonate of soda, for 10 to 15 minutes, or until decomposition is complete. Cool, and extract fusion in an 8-in. evaporating dish with HCI (1-1); rinse crucible and cover with distilled water, and evaporate to dryness over a water bath. Take up dry mass with 10 cc. strong HCI, and then.

Those involved in managing risk today are asking various questions: why is it so frustrating to discuss æriskÆ with communities? why do consultative processes around æriskÆ get more and more complex? where is all this going to end? These questions will be addressed by examining how our understanding of risk has changed from one based on biophysical hazard to a broader view that includes social and cultural factors. There is evidence to suggest that we are living in a ærisk societyÆ, where the goal of æsafetyÆ has replaced that of equality in a class based society. The global mining industry operates within this complex and politicised environment. The very meaning of ædevelopmentÆ has broadened from the narrow economic vision to include the social and environmental factors which make up æSustainable DevelopmentÆ. Corporate accountability now extends beyond traditional shareholders to wide groups of stakeholders. The mining industry is developing responses which look beyond traditional technocratic methods. At the industry level these responses have included the recent Mining Minerals and Sustainable Development global and regional reports It has proven challenging and difficult to operationalise these new understandings at the company level and it is time to look at the bigger picture.

This paper aims to provide a brief overview of the Australian Coal Bed Methane (CBM) industry and more importantly the challenges to sustainable management of the industryÆs by-product, groundwater. In a country where water is scarce and having gone through one of the worst recorded droughts it is vital that this important industry be seen to be managing water in a responsible manner with the greatest environmental and social benefit. Benefits of the water from CBM wells can be enhanced through treatment to produce potable water for domestic or stock purposes, water for irrigation or aquaculture or lower quality or untreated water for industrial or mining purposes. Other options are re-injection of raw water or waste from the treatment processes or discharge to surface waterways. The critical change and difference between CBM projects and traditional oil and gas operations should be that where possible water is no longer disposed of via evaporation ponds with the dual legacy of waste of the water resource and an environmental contamination problem with the remaining salt and brine product.

As mining undoubtedly influences the natural environment future challenges of copper ore mining are minimisation of land use in area and duration, proper land rehabilitation as well as tailings management. One possible solution to avoid these negative impacts could be the application of underground mining with backfilling tailings compounds. This approach would definitely increase the production cost. Against this background the project analyses the influence of an æecologically satisfyingÆ copper ore mining on world market prize and demand as well as on the environment. In the project 261 copper ore mines accounting for 98 per cent of world copper production have been examined. After modelling a backfill plant, analyses of applied backfill techniques were conducted. Afterwards a method of cost estimation was developed and then the backfill plant model was applied in three case studies. The results were transferred into scenarios. The work closes with a short discussion and gives an outlook to forthcoming research. The results presented in this work have been generated within the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 525 entitled æResource-orientated view of metallic raw material flowsÆ. This interdisciplinary project was established at Aachen University of Technology (Germany) in 1997 and is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The long-term goal of this research program is the identification of options for the resource-sensitive supply and processing of metallic raw materials. In order to address the sustainable development challenges facing the metals and minerals industry an integrated resource management system is to be developed and tested for important metallic raw materials. Case studies for aluminium and copper are being conducted by the CRC 525 in order to provide useful and efficient tools for decision makers over the entire life cycle of these materials.
