THE absence of any locality maps of the district of Morobe has been seriously felt by mining engineers engaged on the goldfields, and as it was evident at the beginning of operations that the administration would be unable to make good this deficiency, ascheme for making rapid traverses was worked out, and in all subsequent travelling the necessary records were kept for the construction of a reliable reconnaissance map of the Bulolo goldfield and its approaches (see Plate 1.). Since all the field work had tobe carried out without encroaching on primary duties, the compilation of sufficient data was a somewhat lengthy business. It was found that in this r;ough country a pedometer was useless, as it was impossible to calibrate it for the variation in length ofpace between climbing semi-precipices and walking over level country. Further, the native tracks "meander" so excessively that the only method of calculating air-line distance is by timing, and a knowledge of what the timing represents, and until a 10kg experience had been gained in the time taken to cover known distances in various types of-country, one could not feel competent to estimate sufficiently accurately. It was found that reliability could be attained only when walking at nearly top pace. Inregard to aeroplane traverses, results were reliable only when the air was fairly still.BEARINGSIn arriving at the bearing between main traverse points, the method used was to keep a "boy" about two chains- behind when marching and sight back on him, standing, at about two-chain intervals. This case study describes various aspects of establishing a laboratory facility for testing chemically-cemented fill materials. The applicability of data obtained from such a facility related to mine conditions depends on many factors: kind of data, type of testing facility, sample parameters (composition, geometry, size, etc.). The equipment employed must be adaptable, to accommodate variations in sample size and properties. The design, construction and operation of the testing facility is described, and its application to fill samples prepared from sulphides and oxides both chemically and naturally cemented. The present system was selected following an extensive study of equipment available for testing materials in the fields of rock mechanics and construction materials. The strength testing' facility incorporates Linear Variable Differential Transformers for monitoring both lateral and axial displacements during sample compression. The output from these and from other related instrumentation can be recorded or fed direct to a computer, enabling stress-strain data to be printed out while the test is in progress. Also described are controlled environment curing facilities which allow samples to be cured or weathered under different temperature or humidity conditions to simulate long-term ageing and in place conditions.

This paper describes the design and constructability issues investigated in the selection of a trenchless solution in comparison to trenched construction options as part of a scoping study for the augmentation of the existing Bulimba Creek Trunk Sewer in Brisbane. Initial work involved the planning of alignment options vis-a-vis ground geology, geotechnical conditions, location and depth of shafts considering potential construction technology, flotation and stability of the tunnel, availability of construction sites and the influence of construction works on neighbourhood properties and the immediate environment. Two design pipe sizes, DN1200 and DN1500, were considered, and factors including jacking forces, specification of product pipes, pipe joints, pipe jacking methods and the associated impacts of ground settlement were carried out. Of particular interest was research on suitable lubricating fluids with the potential to minimise jacking forces and maximise the length of pipeline between launch and reception shafts.

Prior to resource modelling, sample scale data is normally grouped into spatial domains that reflect zones of homogenous properties. These domains are usually based on a combination of grade and other variables that reflect, for example, geology and alteration, or variables known to correlate with properties of the samples that affect downstream processing. Domaining and wire-framing sample scale data is a time intensive task and it is difficult to track more than a few variables simultaneously while establishing domain boundaries. This is especially the case in operations with complex data, for example, a combination of multi-element assaying of total element concentrations, and/or phase specific assaying such as sulfide sulfur, carbonate carbon, cyanide available gold, and/or downhole geophysical measurements. To minimise unintentionally grouping samples of contrasting properties within the same domain, unsupervised statistical methods are available that can automatically identify samples atypical of the domain, both as univariate tests, and as tests that take correlation within the domain into account. Unsupervised methods in this context means methods of identifying atypical samples that require just the selection of the domain and input variables. Thresholds are derived robustly from the data itself, and the results are therefore repeatable and operator independent. Atypical samples may be thought of as outliers, ie, samples that are separated from the ‘majority’ of the data. If these atypical samples are themselves spatially associated, they may be allocated to an alternative existing domain or allocated to a new domain. Care should always be taken to ensure that identified outliers are due to meaningful causes and not due to data coding and storage errors, although the identification of the latter is still valuable. *This is an abstract only. The FalTmT iron ore deposits are located in the so-called æBirrimianÆ volcano-sedimentary complex that extends in a general NE-SW direction across eastern Senegal and part of Mali and Guinea. The rocks underwent folding and greenschist facies metamorphism, as well as various events of granitoid emplacement. The deposits form part of the DialT-DalTma Series of the Birrimian Supergroup and were subjected to contact metamorphism. The Fe-mineralisation occurs as primary magnetite within the metamorphic aureole. Supergene oxidation (martitisation) of this mineralisation produced the hematite-rich iron deposits that can be seen as prominent hills across the plains of this south-eastern corner of Senegal. BRGM of France and Miferso (SociTtT des Mines de Fer du STnTgal-Oriental) have conducted several phases of prospecting since 1957. Their aim was to delineate the hematite deposits and to assess the grade, beneficiation characteristics and marketability of the iron ore. A feasibility study by Fluor Daniel was completed in 1992. Results indicated that, at the time, the resource could not compete in the international arena in terms of size and accessibility. The growing iron ore market and additional available resources in the area now challenge the 1992 feasibility study results and put the old kid back on the iron ore block. The project faces some mining challenges, such as the amount of magnetite in the hematite product that will be acceptable to the market. Previous project evaluations only considered the secondary hematite deposits as economically viable. It is therefore important to accurately delineate the magnetite/hematite contact zone to optimise the resource tonnage. Project logistic constraints also exist in terms of railway access and harbour facilities. The resource is, however, well situated for the European iron ore market and aims to find a place in the rapidly expanding iron ore seaborne trade.

While international coal trading operations often involve relatively small contract quantities, delivered over short periods or even in single shipments, most coal is supplied under long term arrangements. In entering into these arrangements the customer needs to be assured that coal of suitable and consistent quality can be supplied for their duration in the volume required. A detailed knowledge of the mine and transport system is required and must be presented from the customer's perspective.

Fluid bed sulphation roasting followed by leaching at low pH was developed as a means of separating copper and bismuth from a mix- ture of flotation concentrates and flash fur- nace flue dust. A 65 tonne/day plant was established and typically achieves 89 percent copper extraction with negligible bismuth and iron extraction. Acid-chloride leaching of bismuth from copper leach residue was then established, with bismuth oxychloride being precipitated from solution by dilution with water. A small scale batch plant presently in operation typic- ally achieves 80 percent recovery of bismuth to bismuth oxychloride.

The exploration and mining risks are investigated and compared to the risks of smelting, secondary processing and other normal industrial activities. This study concentrates on the risk before, or at the investment decision. Internal and external risks are distinguished. Internal risks are the risks inherent in every engineering design and common to all projects. The main external risks are the financial risk, changes in prices, location problems and geological factors. Financial risks concern every capital-intensive and export-oriented project and cannot be considered as typical mining risks. Changes in prices, i.e. the market risk, concern every industry using raw materials, but the market risk is especially accentuated in the mining industry. Problems of location and infrastructure are normally more significant in mining than in other projects, and geological risks are unique to mining. All these risks associated with mining projects combine to form a risk at least twice as high as that for other normal industrial activities. Within the range of profitability of mines, which on average is the same as in the manufacturing industry, only a few highly profitable mines exist. These few mines are the sole reward for the high risks taken.

"In some lode-style gold deposits the geological (lithological) uncertainty may have similar economic significance as the grade uncertainty. In the absence of precise knowledge of the deposit geology, geological models of these types of deposits that are used to constrain spatially the estimated (or simulated) grade values may influence significantly the contained metal. Methods for assessing geological uncertainty quantitatively are rarely considered due to their perceived inability to consider exhaustive geological interpretations, and resulting models that often appear geologically unrealistic. Furthermore, should the lodes have been subjected to folding, or where the mineralisation continuity does not follow a planar orientation along strike or down dip, standard methods of variography and interpolation using linear vectors in space often do not provide a good representation of continuity. An alternative approach is to relate spatial samples from adjacent drill holes using an unfolding plane.The paper demonstrates conditional simulation of the geometry and gold grades of a folded lode-style deposit where:simulation of lode geometry considers explicitly the geologistÆs interpretation, andsimulation of gold grade values that consider explicitly the folded nature of the lodes.The results are contrasted to the traditional approach of linear vectors in real space for a single lode interpretation.CITATION:Richmond, A, 2012. Colombia is an example of a nation where mining makes a significant contribution to local and national economies. Due to the abundant resources present in the ground, there are good prospects for further development. However, the impacts of mining projects can include reduced access to good quality freshwater for other economic activities and/or biodiversity preservation (Ossa et al., 2018). As well as the water management challenges common to all mining regions globally, Colombia has particular challenges associated with its biophysical and socio-political traits. Land use change in many regions is dynamic including rapid development of agriculture and the development and abandonment of small scale mines. The value of ecosystem services provided by prospective mining regions also creates challenges in particular with regard to the páramos, the headwater wetlands from which about 70% of Colombia’s water supply has originated (Cleef 1981). Colombia also has particular challenges related to strong preconceptions about mining and its impacts on water. On the one hand, there is recognition that new large-scale mines are important for Colombia’s economy; on the other, there is deep distrust of the sector’s ability to operate with minimal adverse impacts (Gutiérrez-Gómez, 2017). Hence, any impact assessment is likely to face high levels of scepticism and scrutiny. Summarising the work of McIntyre et al. (2018), this abstract proposes a framework for assessing and communicating risks to regional water resources arising from the impacts of mines. The framework outputs aim to provide government and other stakeholder groups the scientific evidence needed to inform their viewpoints about mining development in the selected region, and a baseline from which to design a program of priority scientific research. This research is to grope for a method to reduce high pore pressure taking place on tunnel shotcrete lining, especially in underwater tunnels, effectively by utilising a new concept of patternised pin drain. Accordingly, the patternised pin drain system is investigated numerically in order to confirm to the effect of reduction of pore pressure by the pin drain and its effective application. Installation of pin drain shows considerable reduction in the figure of pore pressure. It is found through 2D numerical modelling that the change of pore pressure, according to the shape and the location of pin drain, is sensitive by the sequences of the change of location > the change of length > the change of angle degree. In the results of investigation in 3D modelling, the pore pressure is the largest in the centre of the interval among pin drains, and it is possible to obtain an ideal degree of longitudinal angle and an interval by investigating pore pressure taking place on the lining.

The kinetics of chlorination of alumina and bauxite with CO/CI2 mixtures were studied in the range 300-1100°C. The temperature of prior calcination is critical in determining the reaction rates. An optimum chlorination temperature in the range 600°C-750°C was demonstrated such that there is no increase in reaction rates with increasing temperature. This lack of rate sensitivity to rising temperature is largely a function of the influence of gaseous diffusion gradients in the porous alumina together with a progressive decrease in surface area.

Transformations of minerals to processed mineral products fundamentally involve wholesale chemical change, and therefore have a high potential for the release of chemicals and wastes. In this regard minerals processing contrasts with downstream production operations, which involve mainly physical changes. The contrast with mining, which must take place where the minerals are found, is that mineral processing allows choices as to location, processes, fuels and reductants. These choices provide a foundation for dealing with issues of resource stewardship. This paper locates the mineral processing industry in the global perspective by quantifying the masses of major material inputs and outputs, based on current processing choices. Estimates for recycling have also been collated, revealing figures that differ surprisingly from commonly held impressions. The paper draws on a variety of current sources, mainly those available through the Internet, to rank the major transformed virgin mineral products by production, price and value. The figures demonstrate the dominance of Portland cement and steel in the global environmental impacts of mineral processing. Aluminium comes a distant third in the list, and the metals particularly associated with localised environmental impacts have relatively small global effects compared with those of the staple materials of our built environment. This global macro input/output perspective, with materials flows expressed per unit of virgin product, provides a benchmark for grasping sustainability challenges within specific operating businesses. Because of the global scope and pervasive impact of the minerals processing industry, the issue of resource stewardship is rising as a matter for public concern. There appears to be a developing view that the mining and mineral processing sector should take responsibility for these products throughout their various life cycles. However, in a future of stabilising consumption, dematerialisation and intensive recycling, the mining industry would only need to provide the top-up to a stock of recirculating materials. The question of responsibility for stewardship over SocietyÆs stock of materials remains open.

Broken Hill has a long history of mining and it is without doubt a world-class deposit. It has seen production since 1885, notwithstanding the strikes that made the city infamous in days gone by and has given rise to three of the nation's leading mining companies; BHP, North and CRA. Prior to the formation of Pasminco in 1988, the mining and exploration activities were undertaken by separate companies who were business competitors and tended to operate in relative isolation. There were a few notable exceptions such as the Central Geological Survey of 1936 - 38 (Gustafson, 1939; Gustafson et al, 1950) and the Mine Managers' Association. The latter sponsored many university based research projects. At a local level there was good communication and cross fertilisation within this remote outback centre through personal contacts and professional bodies such as The AusIMM. Pasminco was formed by the merging of the lead-zinc interests of CRA Ltd and North Broken Hill Ltd. In Broken Hill this meant the joining together of North Mine and ZC Mines, the two largest mines then operating on the Line of Lode, to form Pasminco Mining Broken Hill Operations. Dominion Mining Ltd. and the JKMRC have conducted a detailed investigation of the performance of two of Dominion Mining's gold treatment plants (Haveluck and Paddy's Flat). In terms of design each plant is considerably different. The Paddy's Flat plant uses a single stage SAG mill with recycle crusher, followed by single stage ball milling. The Haveluck plant uses the more traditional approach of multi-stage crushing and ball milling. The performance of these two plant designs in terms of energy efficiency and cost of comminution equipment, developed at the JKMRC, to accurately predict both power draw and size reduction characteristics at these plants is evaluated.
