From 1980 to February 1991 the Rosebery concentrator purchased ore from Aberfoyle's Que River Mine. Following the termination of the contract the concentrator reverted to treating Rosebery ore alone. Since that time it has become apparent that the circuit configuration employed was no longer optimum for zinc metallurgy. The circuit was designed to treat a difficult, slow floating sphalerite; however, the opposite was now found to be true. The sphalerite is fast floating and the circuit was cumbersome. During 1992 extensive circuit changes led to the provision of a simple open circuit flow sheet. The circuit is now easier for operators to understand and lends itself to improvements in process control. Middlings streams have been minimised, which produces a far more stable circuit. Significantly, it must be noted that the key to achieving potential results must lie in reducing variations within the process. A significant ore characterisation program has been undertaken, providing an insight into the metallurgical compatability of the ore to be mined. Using the information collected in this program, metallurgical recoveries and grades can now be predicted with a geater accuracy. Ore characterisation data suggests that an improvement from a 54 per cent zinc concentrate to a 57 per cent zinc concentrate should be achievable. By understanding the size-by-size mineral assemblage, a strategy for concentrate grade improvement has been developed. The requirements of the customer must in all cases determine the quality of the product. Pasminco is a fully-integrated zinc producer and as such significant gains can result by tailoring the concentrates to suit the Smelters.

It is recognised by the current JORC (1999) code that resource classification involves the interaction of numerous qualitative and quantitative criteria such as data quality, geological continuity and grade continuity. No prescribed criteria and rules will work for all situations or even between different ore types within the same deposit. Also these criteria and rules are sometimes applied without a clear understanding of their appropriateness, accuracy or correct implementation. For these reasons case studies are useful to evaluate and compare criteria commonly used to assist in resource classification. In this paper blasthole data from a selected area of Joffre Member hosted ore of the Brockman Iron Formation at the Mt Whaleback orebody are used as the basis of a case study for the above-mentioned purposes. Iron grade, in per cent, is interpolated from a blasthole dataset into a block model using ordinary kriging. Samples are then removed from this blasthole dataset to produce a random sample grid, a semi-random sample grid and a regular sample grid. Using nearest neighbour, inverse distance squared, ordinary kriging and sequential gaussian simulation, block iron grades are estimated using these three blasthole data subsets as inputs. This provides four groups of estimates with the ordinary kriging estimate based on the complete blasthole dataset being considered to represent the true estimate of iron grades. Also generated during this process are estimates of the error for each block. These error estimates range from the simple, such as drill spacing, through to more advanced methodologies such as kriging efficiency and simulation. These estimates of grade and grade estimation error are then compared to the true estimate using graphs and statistics. In order of increasing accuracy the block grade estimation and simulation methods were nearest neighbour, inverse distance weighting, ordinary kriging and finally conditional simulation. The simulation in some instances doubled the accuracy of individual block grade estimates when compared to nearest neighbour and inverse distance weighting estimates. It was found that many methodologies for estimating the error of individual blocks performed equally well with only methods such as average drill hole spacing and classification by search ellipse pass number performing poorly. An approach on how to convert the abovementioned error estimates of individual blocks into a meaningful JORC classification is also discussed. Although advanced non-linear resource estimates are applicable, most iron ore mines are still using relatively straightforward methods. The use of blasthole data and some simple linear interpolation methods and simple linear based error estimates makes this study repeatable for most iron ore sites and their resource geologists. This style of investigation is recommended as a useful approach for the Competent Person to apply to their deposit and thus better select, implement and understand the criteria used for resource classification and provide more consistency and confidence in the resource classification process.

Nuclear power stations to be installed in Australia will be fuelled from Australian resources of raw materials. This will require the establishment of new manufacturing industries and the eventual expansion of established activities, especially in uranium mining and the preparation of precision metal products. This paper presents some predictions of the possible growth of nuclear power installations in Australia. These might amount to 4000 MWE by 1985 and 11,500 MWE by 1990 and towards the end of the century, about 50% of new generating plant might be nuclear. Predictions are given of the demands for materials (uranium and zirconium) and fuel manufacturing services for four reactor systems which might be considered in the programme. - The availability of raw materials and technical capability place Australia in a particularly good position to undertake the manufacture of nuclear fuel'; in addition to satisfying the domestic demand we should actively seek export markets for these products.

The Japanese Government promulgated the æLaw Concerning Special Measures Against DioxinsÆ on 16 July 1999 and it was enforced on 15 January 2000. This is a unique law specialised to protect the environment by the control of dioxin emissions from waste incinerators and several industrial processes. In this law, a few metallurgical processes other than waste incinerators are designated as æspecified facilitiesÆ emitting certain dioxins. Thus, emission standards for dioxins to the air were set for electric arc furnaces (EAF) for steelmaking, iron ore sintering, zinc recovery from EAF dust and aluminum recycle processes. In this paper, the inventory of dioxin emissions for Japan and the recent research and development to reduce emissions from those processes are introduced. Further, some details on the formation mechanism of dioxins and future subjects for effective control of their emissions are discussed.

In October 1993 it was decided to undertake the fourth phase of mining at Big Bell. This decision followed the exhaustion of open pit reserves in January 1993. Two stages of mining were proposed for the new underground mine. The initial stage would mine the remnant ore, consisting of the rib and crown pillars and lower grade ore on the hangingwall and footwall side of the old open stopes, which were mined from the 1930s to 1950s. Most of the old open stopes were backfilled with either deslimed mill tailings or development mullock, both of which were economic to recover. However, the mineable ore from this resource was difficult to evaluate. The second stage focused on mining ore outside the remnant areas and was initially proposed as a Core and Shell method under a caving hangingwall. This method has since been superseded with sublevel caving, in part due to the very high and deviatoric stress conditions encountered at Big Bell and the relatively long mining cycle required for open stoping. The problems and challenges discussed in this paper will cover the identification of remnant ore reserves, dewatering the old workings, and remnant mining.

This paper is an appraisal of the application of optical-mechanical-scanners operating in the non-photographic infrared wavelengths (3-5 and 8-14 micrometres) to mineral exploration in Australia. Pundamental principles of the operation of airborne scanners and their data output, thermal infrared (IR) imagery, are summarized. It is contended that thermal IR imagery often depicts the distribution of electromagnetic radiation emitted from earth surface materials better than aerial photographic techniques because optical-mechanical-scanners sample wavebands which straddle the wavelength peak of earth surface emission. To illustrate the geological features which such scanners can depict, reference is made to thermal IR imagery of a number of areas in Australia where the technique has been applied for exploration purposes. A continuous oxygen probe,incorporating a SIRO2 solid electrolyte oxygen sensor which measured the oxygen potential of a small volume of gas enclosed above the melt's surface,was constructed and tested. The oxygen potential of iron-silicate slags in equilibrium with solid iron in the temperature range 1250 to 1300¦C were measured continuously for tests of up to 40 hours duration. Results were in agreement with those of previous workers using gas equilibration techniques. Tests on non- iron buffered slags proved unsuccessful due to corrosion of the probe's component in contact with the slag and an alternative material is Required.

A research programme sponsored through the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association investigated two aspects of mine aerodynamics on model scale. These were aero- dynamic losses in (a) shaft/airway intersections and (b) losses created by mine cages moving in a combined haulage/ventilation shaft. The shaft/airway intersections studied included base and intermediate levels for both upcast and downcast. shafts, with one to four rectangular airways intersecting a circular shaft. Changes in intersection geometry were limited to the installation of 45¦ conical brow cutoffs of varying size and the addition of simple flow control devices. The relative air- flows between the airways and the downstream shaft were varied over a range employed in Australian mining practice. In general, experiments revealed that a small brow cutoff was significantly better than none at all, and a simple device such as a cone can reduce losses and improve flow stability at an intersection. The mine cage studies determined the effect on aerodynamic loss of cage area blockage, height/length ratio, openings in cage walls and surface roughness due to external structural members. The paper reviews the early history of the project leading up to the discovery of the first kimberlite pipe in September 1991, diamond exploration techniques and the subsequent advanced exploration and development work carried out at the site. In many aspects, this exploration work represented a development project in itself. Coinciding with the advanced exploration work, the project team prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and went through federal review of the project at the highest level. The DOZ underground mine at PT Freeport Indonesia is a copper and gold mine in Indonesia with current ore production of 42 000 tpd. Because of the mine expansion into the West DOZ more ventilation raises are needed to create a safe and healthy work place. All ventilation raises that connect the extraction levels to the underlying gallery exhaust drifts at DOZ are now developed using drop raise techniques. This paper describes the improvements undertaken to increase blasting efficiency, to decrease cost and reduce safety risks. This was achieved by using deck loading and presplitting, changing of stemming materials and prevention of excessive raise collar cratering (blow up).

When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode amI across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. The limitations of the conventional practices, and their effects, in prospecting for and in the evaluation of alluvial gold deposits are briefly reviewed. Geophysical prospecting methods have demonstrated their complementary role in the delineation of deposits by reducing the number of boreholes which are primarily of a 'probing' type. Larger diameter boreholes, although more expensive on a linear basis, are much cheaper on a volume recovered basis. The need to have sufficient volume as well as number of samples is stressed. Classical statistical methods are not appropriate for such deposits as there is sufficient structure, or spatial correlation, to require the application of geostatistics. Quite reliable semi-variograms, but not in all cases, of the spherical scheme have been obtained. Subsequent kriging has, to date, been confined to unworked deposits: retrospective estimates to compare to production have not therefore been produced. However, the technique shows promise but indicates a considerably greater borehole density (of the conventional diameter) may be necessary to produce confident estimates. Used in conjunction with larger diameter boreholes, a lesser borehole density may be sufficient, through radical reductions of the sampling error.

Queensland Mines Limited operates a small uranium treatment plant at Nabarlek in the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve, some 265 km due east of Darwin. It was the wish of the local Aboriginal people that the ore be treated over an eight year period and that no township be constructed in Arnhem Land. Due to these wish- es it was decided to house employees and their families in Darwin and fly the employees to the minesite for work rosters. A singleman's style camp only was constructed at Nabarlek. To satisfy the Aboriginal people's wishes all recreation time is spent offsite thus lead- ing to a roster system whereby employees spend three distinct periods of 6, 6 and 4 days on- site, broken by recreation periods of 3, 4 and 5 days in Darwin, during each 28 day period. Employees are divided into four opposing rosters, which allows at any given time for approximately half the workforce to be onsite and the other half on rest and recreation leave in Darwin. This method of staffing has generally proved to be most satisfactory although at times problems arise, in terms of both product- ion and social effect not normally encountered when operating within more conventional circum- Stances.

Depletion of shallow ore reserves is forcing the South African gold mining industry to exploit reefs at ever-increasing depths. By 2010 around 30 per cent of South African gold production probably will come from depths greater than 3 km (Johnson and Schweitzer, 1996). At such depths, virgin stresses will rise significantly, producing complex rock engineering problems (Malan and Basson, 1998). Concern over structural instability at depth has led planners to seek a technology capable of ædetection of geological structures with a displacement of 2 m or greater (or as appropriate to the mining technique) 200 m ahead of mining at an acceptable costÆ. Borehole radar probably is such a technology. Cover holes are drilled routinely ahead of development. The evaluation of its candidacy for a tactical role in ultra-deep gold mining dependsùamong other thingsùupon establishing the electromagnetic characteristics of the environment hosting significant gold reefs. The Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) is one such reef. Recent borehole radar field trials, presented here, suggest that the VCRÆs overburden is a remarkably translucent, clutter-free dielectric with a Q of ~35 and that the VCR itself is the dominant radar reflector.

The role of marketing in the development of a new project will be affected by political, commercial and technical pressures. Marketing success will be determined by the ability to predict and react to tomorrow's environment. In the Australian coal industry there is an emerging transition from production to marketing orientation. As a result, greater technical awareness of customer needs will be required. In particular, the industrial product nature of coal markets will need to be recognised. Greater attention will also need to be paid to product options and quality in mine planning. Marketing personnel will become more involved at every phase of the development of a new mine.

In November, 1967, a four strand curved mould continuous casting machine coupled with a 50 ton basic oxygen furnace began producing billets for the rod mill and new merchant mill at the Newcastle Steelworks. To date over 500,000 tons of carbon and alloy steels have been cast at the rate of 20,000 tons per month, the major part for the wire industry. Many alterations have been made to the plant to simplify the process, improve quality and increase production. Casting parameters have been developed for each different type of steel. The quality of the final product has been influenced most by casting temperature, secondary cooling and casting speed. All these factors have been controlled and good results are reproduced. More exacting requirements of liquid steel quality have brought about the use of higher lime/silica ratio slags during steelmaking to control phosphorus revers- ions and standard ladle additions of manganese suicide and ferro aluminium for more effective deoxidation.

Examination of the geology and support performance at two site leads to development of an under tanding of the influence of caving on powered support rating. The two site represent the current extremes in support rating, i.e. 6/260 tonne supports operating in the Hirst seam at Solsgirth Colliery, Scotland, and 4/900 tonne supports operating in the Bulli seam, West Cliff Colliery, Australia.A conceptual model considers the coal ahead of the face, the powered support, and the caved waste to be three yielding foundations which interact to control the subsidence of the roof strata.The caving mechanisms identified for the strata of the Hirst and Bulli seams, are different. These mechanisms being related to rock properties - the palaegeography and depositional conditions at each site-produce caved wastes with different yield characteristics.An analysis of the results obtained for convergence and support reaction during production cycles at both sites shows the manner in which support reaction is developed, indicating the importance of higher setting load densities in the Bulli seam.Evaluation of the work done on the subsiding roof strata during typical production cycles by two of the yielding foundations the powered support and the caved waste immediately behind the powered support - further demonstrates the influence of caving mechanisms on support rating.

The Mt Morgan Minesite in Central Queensland has been subject to both underground and surface gold mining operations since the late-1800s. The site is largely unrehabilitated and poor quality surface run-off and subsurface leachate is contaminating the nearby Dee River. The site is dominated by a large open cut, which now stores contaminated surface and subsurface run-off. Three models were used to simulate the complex hydrologic processes occurring at the Mt Morgan Mine: a rainfall-run-off model, a groundwater model and a storage behavioural model. Study results showed that the open cut is filling with water and will soon spill large volumes of highly polluted water to the Dee River on a regular basis if no remedial action is taken. This will result in a three-fold increase in pollutant load to the Dee River. Based on a consideration of water quality and quantity it was concluded that the first priority for future minesite water management should be the prevention of spills from the open cut. Potential management options to achieve this objective included surface rehabilitation, catchment diversions, modification of the pump-back system and controlled releases to the Dee River during floods. However, assessing the relative effectiveness of these measures required a thorough understanding of the complex surface and subsurface hydrology of the site. The results of a 100 year simulation of hydrologic processes revealed that previously favoured management options would be ineffective in preventing spills to the river. On this basis, a continuous treat and release strategy was proposed as the only reliable method of preventing future spills. The results of this study demonstrate that good environmental management decisions must be based on an understanding of the relevant physical processes and consideration of cumulative effects over an appropriate time scale.

An amount of explosives, whether it be cylindrical, spherical, etc in configuration, with a hollow cavity in one face or end is known as a hollow or shaped charge. When this charge is initiated, a focussing of explosive energy will occur within this cavity. This focussing, or concentration of detonation products creates an intense localised force greater than just the simple detonation of a conventional explosive, (without a hollow cavity). If this hollow cavity explosive is directed against a target material this concentrated force is capable of creating a deeper penetration than the same amount of explosive without the hollow cavity. If a metallic liner material is used in the hollow cavity, upon detonation of the explosive this liner will form into a high velocity penetrating jet. Depending on the explosive type and the liner material's configuration the jet tip can travel up to 10 km/s. Linear shaped charges were developed using the abovementioned shaped charge concept but instead of being formed about an axis, they are elongated and constructed along the principal axis. Therefore instead of creating a narrow circular penetration jet, it forms a thicker planar cutting jet ideal for linear cutting purposes. Using Linear Shaped Charges (LSC) for pre-splitting is expected to result in more accurate directional fracture propagation, while minimising lateral micro fractures in the surrounding rock mass which is required to remain undamaged.
