The purpose of blasting during mining is to produce a muck pile that can be efficiently loaded and transported. There is an increasing awareness of the variation in muck pile characteristics and its economic implications. It is well known that good fragmentation by itself is not sufficient to optimise the muck loading efficiency. The swelling and configuration of the muck pile also significantly affect the productivity of the loading equipment. The characteristics of a muck pile depend upon the blast design parameters, explosive properties and rock mass geology. This study has focused on the dependence of muck pile configuration on blast design parameters, explosive properties and size distribution of the muck.The field work was done in two phases. In the first phase 12 blasts were monitored, while in the second, three blasts were monitored. The blast design parameters and explosive properties for each blast were documented and the following muck pile characteristics were measured:muck pile height and its distance from the facedistance of throwwidth of the power troughsize distribution by image analysis technique.The effects of burden, bench height, heave energy of explosive, row-to-row delay, powder factor and the mean particle size of the fragments on muck pile configuration were examined. It was observed that muck pile height and distance of throw are strongly influenced by the burden, bench height, heave energy of the explosive and the size distribution of the muck. The width of the power trough depends upon the row-to-row delay, powder factor and total burden. British Coal has made a practical progressive approach to improving the reliability of its mining equipment. Reliability must be addressed at the specification stage but does not end there and routine procedures are used to procure equipment of adequate reliability. The techniques used to monitor and improve reliability during the operational phase of the equipment, providing engineers and operators with detailed printouts, together with the types of maintenance employed, ensure high levels of availability. Finally, the methods of repair and overhaul of British Coal equipment and systems ensure that the initial reliability targets outlined on the specification, can still be achieved.

A mathematical model for gas flow dynamics and heat and mass transfer processes occuring in the tuyere raceways and in the zone of the final for- mation and heating of pig iron and slag has been developed and simulated on a digital computer. It takes into account the formation and size of the raceway zones, combustion of coke and its substit- utes, oxidation of the metal, radiation from the gases to the raceway boundaries, physical heat losses and the direct reduction of the pig iron elements below the raceway zones. To evaluate the distribution of heat produced by the oxidation of metal between gases and prod- ucts of smelting, the problem of heating the mat- erials in the raceways with the sources of heat in the materials under conditions of intensive gas circulation in the raceways is solved. To determine the amount of heat transferred by radiation from the gas to the boundaries of the raceways, the problem of radiant heat transfer be- tween two grey bodies forming a closed system is solved. Using the structural parameters of the furn- ace, the inlet parameters of the combination blast and exit parameters of the melt, the model permits the calculation of the temperatures of materials entering and leaving the raceways and also the res- idual temperature of the gases, which qualitatively differs from the theoretical combustion temperature. Analysis of the operation of several different blast furnaces has shown that the overall picture of the interaction between gas flow dynamics, mass and heat transfer processes occuring in the race- ways and in the zone of final product formation, obtained with the aid of the model, now permits us to approach from a different position the deter- mination of the limiting factors in furnace operat- ion. It also allows us to explain certain phenom- ena observed in blast furnace practice and to dis- cover new relationships which may be used in analy- sis and control of the smelting process.

Before commencing design of a coal prepar ation plant, it is essential to have detailed information of the raw coal to be treated to- gether with a clear understanding of the products required. Prediction of raw coal size distribution, particularly the amount of fine material, is difficult and the methods employed should be large scale pilot plant studies or techniques to simulate coal degradation and shale breakdown in water. A detailed knowledge of well proven coal preparation processes and new developments allows processes and process combinations to be compared to'obtain the maximum economic recovery when using lower cost, less efficient processes within acceptable limits. Equipment should be selected bearing in mind its precise application and the location where it is installed. Plant layout should be carefully studied to minimise equipment requirements and to simplify construction. Measurement, control and automation should be an integral part of plant design in order to obtain the optimum performance of the processing equipment.

WMC Resources Ltd nickel operations have expanded significantly over the last three years. Production capacity has increased at mine/concentrate, smelting and refinery processes to such an extent that WMC now ranks within the top three or four producers of nickel metal in all forms. The stainless steel industry remains the dominant user of nickel. WMC's forecast is for stainless steel production to grow at 2.8 per cent per annum off of the 1995 peak, with much slower growth in the short-term as the stainless steel inventory overhang unwinds, followed by a return to higher trend growth rates. WMC's forecast for the long-term growth in demand for primary nickel is three per cent per annum off the 1995 peak; again, slower growth in the short-term before a return to higher long-term trend rates. This projection is towards the optimistic end of the range of industry experts. It equates to a requirement for new primary nickel of 25 000 to 30 000 tonnes of annual capacity each year.

The experience gained in the development of an Operator Guidance System (OGS) for on-line process control and fault diagnosis in a commercial scale sintering process will be discussed in this paper. The OGS development started with the specification of feasible control and support tasks, eg ratio control scheme, mass balance calculations. Next, minimum requirements for fault diagnosis and process control were defined and the adequacy of existing instrumentation was assessed. The OGS knowledge base consists of both quantitative and qualitative diagnosis methods. Quantitative models based on fundamental engineering principle are used first and any gaps in such quantitative knowledge are then filled with heuristic rules. The diagnostic rules for the knowledge base was developed based on the knowledge acquired from experienced operators and operations engineers and validated with plant data. A real time reasoning program was written using C language and data base software. The OGS has a human-computer interface which is the primary means of interaction between the OGS and process operator. The OGS development has been successful in assisting operators in decision-making in their routine tasks. Further enhancement to the existing system is currently underway.

The Martha deposit in Waihi, New Zealand, is a giant adularia-sericite epithermal gold-silver deposit that formed 6.0 to 6.1 Ma, and has produced over 6.4 Moz gold and 39.9 Moz. Fluid inclusion analyses were undertaken on a limited number of vein samples from Martha. The results from this eight week student project are preliminary but agree with previous studies. There is little variation between primary and secondary inclusions and between different vein types, except that homogenisation temperatures of the inclusions in sphalerite grains are on average 20¦ to 30¦C higher than the average quartz vein values. Overall the temperatures of homogenisation ranged from 182¦ to 258¦C and final ice melting temperatures ranged from 0.0¦ to 2.8¦C. Unusual black inclusions were also found associated only with the ginguro bands. Some of these appear to be solid sulphide inclusions but others are not so clear.

Applied mineralogy involves conducting investigations on ores, minerals and materials to solve problems encountered in mining, metallurgy, processing, industrial minerals, environment, health and other fields. The investigations are performed to determine the mineral behaviours during processing by using every mineral and ore characterisation technique and appropriate instruments. As the field is young, new techniques and instruments are still being developed. This paper attempts to convey the scope of the field by:describing the capabilities of the respective research instruments for determining mineral characteristics, summarising investigations of gold as an example of applied mineralogy studies of precious metals, andpresenting a case history where applied mineralogists worked closely with mineral processing engineers on a base metal ore and mill products to help the engineers optimise their processes for maximum recoveries.

Comalco Limited has recently completed construction of a $50 million kaolin plant at the site of its bauxite mining and industrial minerals operation at Weipa. The plant will produce 100,000 tonnes per annum of coating grade kaolin for the paper industry. Comalco produced the first coating kaolin from the deposit in 1979 on a trial basis. Since then a variety of quality coating grades with specific particle size distributions and brightness values have been prepared. Extensive drilling and bulk sampling of the deposit over eight years has shown that the ore body is large and of a high grade suitable for the production of premium quality coating kaolins. The processing plant technology was developed by Comalco in association with the European kaolin and equipment producer Amberger Kaolinwerke GmbH (AKW). The Weipa kaolin plant is the first of this size to be built in the Pacific Basin region and it will offer the region's paper-coating mills a stable and reliable source of high-quality kaolin, shipped from an established bulk loading port. High resolution, acoustic scanning technology has emerged in recent years as a powerful wireline tool for identifying the occurrence and orientation of structures and borehole breakout û the latter being a strong indicator of horizontal stress directions. While other wireline techniques such as dip metre and calliper logging can provide some of these data in a fairly rudimentary way, the quality and ease of interpretation of acoustic scanner logs provides a level of detail that significantly enhances the risk profile of the analysis which more than compensates for their additional upfront cost (MacGregor, 2002). As is often the case with such technology it is one thing to generate a data set that describes the attributes of the various features apparent in a log, and another to be able to analyse those data in such a way that their individual and collective impact on mine planning issues can be readily assessed (MacGregor, 2003). This paper describes a process for the interactive manipulation and visualisation of joint and breakout data to enable them to be effectively included in the mine design process.

Mining companies around the world devote considerable effort to production reconciliation and metallurgical accounting. However, although sampling, weighing and analysis methods used to obtain the raw data for metal balancing continue to improve, they are still areas that are sadly neglected. Using the latest metallurgical accounting package to improve metal balancing is fundamentally flawed if the data used are unreliable in the first place. The basic rule for correct sampling is that all parts of the material being sampled must have an equal probability of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis. If this rule is not respected, sampling bias can easily be introduced. Unlike precision, which can be improved by replication, bias cannot be reduced once it is present. Sampling and sample processing procedures must therefore be carefully designed both to minimise bias and to obtain acceptable precision. The most suitable sampling location is the discharge point of a process stream, where increments can be obtained by taking a complete cross-section of the stream with a sample cutter. Sampling devices that take only part of the stream may introduce serious bias and must be avoided. The moisture content and wet mass of the material being sampled are of similar importance to chemical analyses for determining metal content. The accurate determination of moisture content is particularly difficult, because the moisture content of samples can change after the sample is taken, eg due to moisture evaporation. Hence, moisture samples need to be taken quickly and placed in sealed bags or containers that are impervious to moisture. The moisture content should then be determined without delay. To determine wet mass, a range of weighing methods are used in industry, including weighbins, weighbridges, conveyor weightometers and platform scales. The precision and accuracy of these methods vary considerably, so it is important to select a method with the appropriate precision and ensure that the weighscale is well maintained and regularly calibrated.

The mineral sand orebodies of the east coast of Australia occupy approximately three per cent of the dune-heath-wetland coastal environment. They are associated with coastal plant communities ranging from Holocene high dunes carrying mature Eucalypt forests to low- lying heaths on Pleistocene deposits. Commonly, 0.25 to 1.5 per cent of the sand volume mined is removed from the site. Therefore, the volume change is insignificant. The equipment and techniques in use are flexible and the land can be returned in a manner suited to its subsequent use for grazing, subdivision or recreation. Landforms similar to the pre-existing are created in two case studies given. Sophisticated revegetation techniques are practised and are discussed in two case studies. Pre-mining vegetation surveys and post-mining monitoring are used to guide the management of the ecosystem.

This paper describes the use of modelling and simulation techniques in the analysis of the heavy medium plant at the Lead/Zinc Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited. The objective of the study is to determine how to increase heavy medium plant recovery at a higher than current rejection rate in order to achieve the desired throughput through the grinding and flotation sections of the concentrator. Three options were considered: 1. Install smaller aperture preparation on screen to enable the cyclones to be fed finer materials. Install smaller diameter cyclones. 3. Maintain low viscosity medium.

For many years it was realised that the methods used for unloading concentrates at Port Pirie were inefficient and labour intensive, therefore, when a decision was reached to standardise the east-west rail link from Sydney to Perth, the opportunity was taken to consider entirely new schemes for the handling of concentrates at Broken Hill and Port Pirie. After considerable testing and investigation, it was decided to install a completely new concentrates handling plant incorporating a tippler at Port Pirieòto replace the previous long established methods of unloading and dis- tributing concentrates to the operating plant.and the shipping berths. To achieve this, wagons of concentrates from the various mines are marshalled in a set order at Broken Hill and conveyed to Port Pirie in 56-wagon trains. On arrival at Port Pirie, the wagons are checked and moved to a position where they come under the control of the automatic wagon marshalling equipment.

The WA Goldfields is a highly productive gold and nickel mining area, but is arid with highly saline groundwater. Groundwater is widely used to supply process water to mines in the region but high groundwater salinity, commonly exceeding 50 000 mg/L TDS, tends to increase processing costs, limit end uses for the water, cause problems with disposal and potentially increase impacts on a sensitive arid environment. The area has low rainfall (200 - 270 mm/year) but run-off, particularly during cyclonic events, is high. Our experience suggests that stream flow from catchments in the area can produce a divertible yield of 8 - 17 ML/km2/year. An evaluation of stream flow harvesting using AnglogoldÆs Jubilee Pit predicted that 1000 ML/year of good quality water could reliably be supplied to the Sunrise Dam Gold Mine. Because of high rainfall variability, it is likely that an alternate source of water supply will be necessary when operating a surface-water harvesting scheme in the WA Goldfields. However, a combination surface/groundwater supply could have substantial cost, operational and environmental benefits compared to traditional supply systems that utilise groundwater only.

The Hedong Gold Mine is located in the Yantai area, Shandong province, China. It is an underground mine with an annual gold output of some 700 000 grams. The orebody is located on the edge of the Wanger Shan metamorphism zone, and the hangingwall of orebodies is thus defined by a prominent set of fractures. The proximity of the metamorphism zone and the inclusion of the fracture set ensure that both the orebody and the country rocks are unstable. The main orebodies dip at an angle of between 40 to 45¦, with a strike length of 160 metres and a horizontal width of 50 metres. Surface subsidence in the area is not permitted. Cut and fill mining is usually practiced. As the mining operation proceeds to greater depths, the ore grade is diminishing and it is necessary to find a more efficient stoping method. Sublevel open stoping with sequential extraction and filling of each sublevel has been designed and applied in situ. This new mining method is called æsublevel open and fill stoping methodÆ in the mine. Experience to-date is that new mining method is satisfactory.

The treatment of slimes has of late years been the chief difficulty in connection with cyanide work, in which much time and money has been spent in endeavouring to find a practical solution of this problem.The processes at present in use are:-1. Filter pressing, as practised in Western Australia.2. Decantation, as practised in South Africa.Filter pressing after apitation affords a ready and efficient means of separating the gold bearing solution from the slimes and admits a perfect washing thus ensuring a high extraction but the very high working costs forbids its application except on high grade material, the chief items being the necessary large amount of labour, compressed air, and general upkeep, none of which can be materially reduced. The decantation method has the ad vantage of low working cost but on the other hand the low extraction obtained, due to imperfect washing, the length of time occupied in' the treatment, and the enormous bulk of solutions to be handled, are serious disadvantages.In either process it is absolutely necessary to obtain a perfectly clean solution before starting the gold precipitation by zinc, which is a source of much trouble. Also the high first cost of installing either plant is such that they can only be adopted on mines with very large working capital.

The Karangahake epithermal Au-Ag mine consists of two main lodes, the Maria and the Welcome/Crown hosted in Miocene andesites. Mineralisation is strongly constrained to major structures and is genetically linked to dynamic tectonic processes. Two main periods of faulting are represented in the deposit: 1. NE striking right-lateral/normal oblique linked spatially and temporally with the mineralising system, and 2. ESE striking right-lateral/normal oblique post-mineral faulting that displaces the lodes. Paleostress analyses performed on a limited kinematic data set indicate NW-SE extension during the formation of the vein system. Veins and lodes strike NNNE and accordingly contain a strike-slip component. The kinematics of vein formation at Karangahake is broadly consistent with that of other deposits within a NNE-trending belt of deposits. Oblique shear on deflecting structures will create zones of compression and dilation. Dilatant zones created on steep structures create fluid pathways potentially focussing large volumes of fluid from deep parts of the system into dynamic structures.

Tandem row stator arrangements are common in the last stage of multirow, gas turbine compressors. Tandem row stators, or stator and de-swirler vane combinations are used to relieve the loading on the stator but ensure axial flow leaving the compressor. In this paper a standard 40” (1016 mm) ventilation fan in the Air Blow Fan’s range is modified to utilise the plate support struts on the barrel to relieve the aerodynamic loading on the aerofoil stator. Performance maps for both versions of the fan were generated using computational fluid dynamics and are compared across a wide range of rotor setting angles showing a clear advantage of approximately 2 per cent in efficiency for the tandem blade design. In addition, the area of high efficiency that represents the practically usable area of the map extends over a greater area in terms of flow rate and total pressure rise.
