Many metallurgical operations produce fine residues and dusts as by-products which can be difficult to handle and offer little direct financial incentive to treat. There is a growing imperative to deal with these materials particularly since land fill is fast becoming an uncertain long term solution. One possible means of treatment is to extract the valuable metals while fusing the remainder into a slag. In this way valuable metal components of the material can be recovered and the less valuable components be converted into useful products, eg cements and inorganic polymers which have a high environmental stability and a growing market. The aim of this project is to establish solids injection and fusion in a slag bath as a viable method of treating industrial wastes and residues. The benefits of this approach are expected to be: the ability to treat a wide range of organic and inorganic residue materials, ease of recovery of volatile and valuable elements and the production of final materials which could be used in other industries. In ongoing experimental work at the CSIRO Minerals a 250 kg slag bath reactor has been used to test the injection of Paragoethite residue into an iron silicate based slag. An experimental apparatus has been designed and commissioned to pneumatically inject solid material at feed rates of up to 80 kg/hour. The capture efficiency of injected solids by the slag bath was calculated by monitoring the composition of the slag. Using this method of treatment, the zinc contained in the residue can be recovered as a fume by varying the oxidation state of the slag. Other valuable elements could be recovered by creating a matte or metal phase in the reactor with the final material being used in the production of cement. A capture efficiency of injected solid paragoethite particles in the slag bath of up to 97 per cent was achieved. Under the conditions of the experimental work capture efficiency was found to be independent of injection velocity and slag depth. The rate of fuming during injection was found to increase slightly with injection velocity and was independent of slag depth.

The Mount Gordon operation, consisting of the Esperanza open cut mine and the unique Mount Gordon Ferric Leach processing plant, is operated by Western Metals Copper Ltd at Mount Gordon, 125 km north east of Mt Isa. The processing plant treats predominantly the secondary copper sulphide minerals, chalcocite and covellite. The gangue consists of massive pyrite and a range of silicified siltstones. The processing plant utilises a conventional single stage SAG/cyclone milling circuit, followed by low-temperature/low-pressure autoclave oxidation to produce copper in solution. The pregnant leach solution is treated via conventional SX/EW technology to produce copper cathode. Currently the plant is operating at a nominal production rate of 48 500 tpa copper. The Mount Gordon Ferric Leach technology is the worlds first integrated pressure leach/SX/EW process to be used to treat copper sulphides on a full plant scale. In the last six months, July to December 2001, the plant has emerged from a two-year postcommissioning phase to achieve steady state operation. This has been characterised by high plant availability and consistent production performance in excess of the name plate capacity of 45 000 tonnes. Production rates will continue to increase over the next 12 months to over 50 000 tpa via a planned process of incremental improvements. The pressure leach circuit has consistently achieved availabilities exceeding 95 per cent over the past 18 months. Notwithstanding this, the leach circuit still has a much greater requirement for planned maintenance than SX/EW. For much of the Mount Gordon processing plantÆs operating life, the leaching process has constrained production. Recent developments arising from detailed mass and energy balance modelling have now significantly improved leach capability, resulting in the plant bottleneck being shifted to electrowinning. In order to balance the capabilities of the two circuits however, the surge capacity between leach and SX/EW was increased substantially. This effectively de-coupled the higher capability but lower availability leach circuit from the lower capability but higher availability SX/EW circuit. As a result, electrowinning utilisation has increased to in excess of 98 per cent, which is reflected in a higher overall plant throughput.

The interaction of man with the environment has a double character. From one side, mankind can not exist without co- nsuming the natural resources and, from the other side, we actively alter and exert influence upon nature. Analysis reveals that the ecological problem is, to a great extent, a geological one. The paper deals with the application of grouting techniques to construct impermeable barriers for the protection of ground water and soils from depletion and industrial wastes pollution. A number of case histories in the field of mine construction is given to illustrate the solution of geotechnical problems in concert with environ- mental protection measures.

I take it the character of addresses to conventions, should, following precedent, avoid details, and treat subjects rather from a philosophical point of view so far as they will permit.In the subject about to be treated on, an endeavour will be made to find here we stand as regards the past, in order that we may the better, hope to look correctly in the direction to be followed.It may be assumed that the main object of the Institute is to forward mining interests and the ways in which engineers can aid those interests are many. If all of us were to try to follow many of those interests we should become like" jacks of all trades and masters of none". Mining engineering is consequently subdivided, all are necessary to the common end, and it is on one of those divisions I have undertaken to address you. The subject or steam pumping is a large one, and I regret, not having received such longer notice as would have enabled me to do better justice to the subject, and more respectful regard for yourselves. I must, however, under the circumstances, crave your generous consideration, and hope the topics mentioned may furnish material for discussion and future papers of far more value than this one, Ind.eed, the subject is so illtimately and historically associated with mining that if treated on its merits would be highly interesting or could be made so in more capable hands.

Porphyry copper, gold and molybdenum deposits form in subduction-related settings in association with calc-alkalic or alkalic magmatism. Hydrothermal alteration assemblages are zoned, with potassic cores and propylitic haloes overlain by extensive domains of clay alteration and silicification (lithocaps). Copper sulfides, gold and molybdenite typically occur in veins or hydrothermal breccias, and less significantly as wall rock replacements. Epithermal deposits may form above or to the side of porphyry systems, and may be juxtaposed into the core of a porphyry deposit if rapid uplift and exhumation occur through the life of the magmatic-hydrothermal system. Volcanichydrothermal breccia pipes (ædiatremesÆ) commonly form late in the life of a porphyry system. They may contain clasts of porphyry-style mineralisation, and can host significant epithermal gold resources. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Changes to water industry practice are required as a consequence of the Council of Australian Governments water reform agenda which binds all states and territories to a range of measures intended to drive new efficiency, sustainability, higher value use and proper provision for environmental needs. Queensland is implementing its reforms program through its water resource planning process, a legislatively underpinned program that provides for a new level of social, economic and environmental security. A water resource plan for the Fitzroy Basin has been finalised and its implementation plan, which details infrastructure operational arrangements for the basin, is due to be released later this year. The mining industry is a major contributor to the economy of the Basin, and although a comparatively minor water consumer, is now aligning its water use practices with the stateÆs maturing integrated resource management paradigm. This new culture presents both challenges and opportunities. Water reform in the Fitzroy basin is well advanced. The processes and institutional arrangements that have been developed are of significant importance to the aspirations of current and future minerals development. This paper outlines the current status of those reforms and the likely institutional framework for the near future. The paper also discusses how the reforms impact on the availability, access and security of water available to mining interests.

A ground support system is a combination of individual reinforcement and surface support elements that work together to retain and contain the rock mass. The various elements are subjected to external loads and to interactive loading between individual ground support system components. This paper focuses on the challenges in determining the capacity and behaviour of mesh, recognizing that installed mesh can be subjected to several loading mechanisms. Field observations from underground hard rock mines demonstrate that there are multiple types of damage and modes of failure of mesh. However, these are difficult to reproduce in a laboratory environment. A critical review has shown that existing mesh laboratory testing rigs reproduce very limited loading conditions that may not be representative of underground conditions. This has significant implications in quantifying and extrapolating the performance of mesh to ground conditions. CITATION:Hadjigeorgiou, J and Stacey, T R, 2018. The aim of the study was to use quantitative mineralogical measurements to predict the processing characteristics of an ore. Samples were taken from a wide range of concentrators processing ores of lead, zinc, copper and nickel. QEM'SEM was used to measure the characteristics of the ore feeding the plant. Concentrate product samples, together with plant operating data were used to give concentrate grade, recovery and grind size information. It was found that the mineralogical measurements correlated well with the metallurgical parameters indicating that these techniques will be very useful for making predictions in feasibility studies and simple plant optimization.

Theories on the origin of the Itabira iron formation (itabirite) in Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF), as elsewhere in the world, are restricted by the apparent lack of adjoining volcanic units, severe syndeformational metamorphism and deep weathering. Besides the three types of iron formations at QF (siliceous, dolomitic and amphibolitic; Dorr, 1969) we include a fourth type initially described as ocherous, goethitic, limonitic or even yellow iron formation. Considering its high magnetite content, it has been described as yellow magnetite itabirite (Pires, 1979). It was reported as formed by the alteration of the dolomitic itabirite (Dorr, 1969) although the anomalous Al2O3 contents are high for normal weathered itabirite. The yellowish magnetitic itabirite occurs at the bottom of the Itabira Iron formation, along the contact with the Batatal schists, and at the top units of the Itabira, within the Gandarela Formation. Within the magnetitic itabirite at the Tamanduß iron ore mine there are metric zones, concordant to the bedding of pillow-like structures, exhibiting a porous core, surrounded by an intermediate, more granular zone with numerous, minute rounded cavities grading to an external, fine-grained zone with much less minute cavities. In the external portions of some pillows a breadcrust type structure, derived by quenching with the water can be observed. In some other zones, such as the Barreiro hill, an outer, vesicular, whitish yellow, 5 - 10 mm thick, band grades to an aphanitic, isotropic band. The vesicles are slightly flattened against the band surfaces. The existence of fragmental layers showing flowage and fragment alignment, kaolinitic laminas and vesicles filled with kaolinite at Barreiro Hill and Capitpo do Mato Mine represent mesoscopic structures, indicators of a possible volcanic origin. Chemical compositions of the magnetitic itabirite from a wide area in QF revealed a relatively high Al2O3 content, consistent with a volcanic origin.

The professional geologist or engineer on a mining operation has a particular view of their operation. This is based on the factors of the operation that have a direct impact on the daily work program of the professional, such as production rates and grades. The view that would be taken by a financier who is called upon to support the project may be somewhat different. The value of the operation to the financier is in its ability to generate surplus cash for its owners and thus repay the debts to the financiers, with as low risks profile as possible. A number of tools are used to test the sensitivity of the project to variations in the key cost/revenue drivers. The Financier may call on a team of technical specialists to assist with the assessment of the cash flow and risk profile and to monitor the development of the project. The ability to offset this risk, as all projects have some degree of risk, may be a key factor in determining the level of financial support to be offered.

Felspar occurs in association with quartz in the Broken Hill lode pegmatites and is brilliant green, greenish white, and white in colour. The pegmatites occur mainly in the walls in sporadic patches, parallel to the general dip of the ore deposit. The occurrences are of no economic value.Deposits of marketable felspar occur in pegmatite in a number of localities around Broken Hill, New South Wales.The majority of these are in the form of an irregular outcrop, usually of tapering length and depth. The maximum depth of any deposit yet worked in the district is about 40 ft. The felspar is occasionally contaminated by "blows" of quartz, mica and beryl, but the two latter are profitably marketable when separated.Felspars vary in colour from pink, through grey to snow white, and the colour is not indicative of the mineral content. The largest deposit at present being worked is the Egebeck quarry, about 14 miles south of Cockburn. It is a prominent outcrop, roughly circular and about 150 ft. in diameter, covered by one to three feet of overburden.The felspar is mainly massive, but contains some cleavage planes at approximately 90°. Intrusions of quartz and mica occur in patches, but the deposit appears likely to improve in size, regularity and quality below the present working floor.COMMERCIAL USES.Commercial felspars are mainly used in the ceramic industry, for which a high-grade potash felspar is required.The dental industry requires limited amounts of soda felspar with a very low Fe20s content. To learn more about the fundamental roof behaviour in South African coal mines, accurate underground measurements of roof deflection were conducted in bord and pillar panels during development and pillar extraction. To conduct these measurements a survey levelling technique was adapted. The overall system reading accuracy was established as being within 0,4 mm on a 15 m sighting distance. The underground sites were modelled and, for a roadway development, similar symmetrical curvatures were calculated by a linear elastic model, as were measured underground. In a pillar extraction panel, a significant amount of bed separation was measured and the roof underwent an a-symmetric movement due to the close presence of the mined out area at one side of the roadway.

Longwall advance mining is still the predaninant system of coal extraction in the U.K., contribiiting to sane 70 % of underground coal production. Gate roadways providing access to a longwall advancing coal face are maintained adjacent to a rib pillar under high strata abutment pressures and the caving rock mass. It is very difficult to realistically model such access roadways using mathematical or numerical techniques and hence, predict roadway closure. For the past 15 years, a research group in Nottingham University has been engaged in the study of longwall gate roadway stability using observation methods. Gate roadway deformations have been measured in 224 gate roadways and a comprehensive data base has been established. The paper describes the statistical analysis of this database and presents sane. predictive equations which will enable a forecast of the gate roadway closure to he made. Further field work to validate these equations. is described together with an error analysis. The results are very promising and indicate that it is possible to predict gate roadway closure in the U.K. within practical limits of Accuracy.

The Bulli Coal Seam, located in the Illawarra Coalfield of New South Wales, has a long and varied history of sudden outbursts. From available information this problem has resulted in twelve fatalities over the last one hundred and one years, with over five hundred separate outburst incidents being identified. These incidents have varied in severity and intensity from the discharge of 1 to 2 tonne of coal, with a slight increase in gas emission, to the discharge of 200 to 400 tonne of coal with some 6,000 m3 of gas being liberated and large items of mining equipment being pushed 1 to 2 metres down the roadway.Geological features associated with these outbursts can be mapped on a regional and mine by mine basis, to provide some indication or warning. Similarly changes in gas content and gas composition can also be determined on a regional and mine by mine basis. However sudden geological changes (such as a 6.5 metre seam displacement within 15 metres) variations in gas content (such as 6 m3/tonne to 15 m3/tonne) and changes in gas composition (from 95% CH4 to 90% CO2) all within one mine does make the prediction or forecasting of outburst incidents exceedingly difficult.

It will describe the processing of the different ores, issues faced and operating and technical innovations that occurred during that period. This will include: commissioning on very high grade Cu ores, treatment of high Sulfur feed ores (~46 per cent S) and the effects of the installation of a Detritor Mill on the process.

The presence of rock joints has a huge impact on the strength, deformability, and permeability of fractured rock masses by providing surfaces of weakness on which further deformation are more prone to occur, and by serving as the major channels of water flow due to low matrix permeability. In earlier studies, water flow-through rock joints is often assumed as laminar flow between two ideal smooth parallel plates, and the well-known cubic law was derived and widely used to characterise the hydraulic behaviour of rock joints. However, natural rock fractures are irregular and of spatially varied aperture. Thus, the concept of equivalent hydraulic aperture was introduced to modify the cubic law. Numerous works have been conducted on the relation between hydraulic aperture and mechanical aperture incorporating various geometrical parameters. The surface roughness is one of the most sensitive factors for water flow-through rock joints. The aperture distributions are irregular in natural roughed fractures relative to the parallel plates. Barton et al (1985) and Olsson and Barton (2001) incorporated the joint roughness coefficient JRC in evaluating hydraulic aperture and proposed an empirical equation based on fluid flow tests. However, their equations do not conform to the dimensional consistency. Many other researchers (Zimmerman and Bodvarsson, 1996; Xiong et al, 2011; Li et al, 2019) considered aperture distributions in their equations. But the aperture distributions change during shear was always neglected. The contact of rock joints also has a significant impact on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of rock joint, since fluid tends to flow-through a rough joint along connected channels while bypassing the contact obstacles with tortuosity. Nonetheless, previous research mostly considered joint roughness or aperture changes based on 2D joint profiles, while the contact and tortuosity based on 3D surfaces were often overlooked. Only a few works have been made on quantifying the effect of contact area on flow behaviour (Walsh, 1981; Zimmerman et al, 1992; Zimmerman and Bodvarsson, 1996; Yeo, 2001), and mostly ignored contact area change induced by shearing and the associated impact on flow behaviour. Summarily, the quantification of fracture geometry effects on water flow in single rock joints still needs further investigation, especially when considering coupled shear-flow processes. This paper, therefore, aims to study the impacts of contact area and aperture distributions of the single rock joint on the flow behaviour. The evolutions of contact area and aperture distributions induced by shear are considered. Then, an improved model for estimating the hydraulic aperture with the mechanical aperture incorporating the above factors is developed. Finally, a series of shear and shear-flow tests are conducted on artificial joint samples and the model performance is verified by comparing against the results of experimental tests.

Off-gas handling systems are a critical component of modern metallurgical furnaces and typically represent as much as 50 per cent of the total installed smelter capital cost. Inadequate off-gas system performance, due to insufficient exhaust flow or excess maintenance downtime, can present a serious process bottleneck and limit smelter production rate. Therefore, it is essential that the relevant performance issues are fully understood and considered in the design of these systems, particularly when combustibles produced within the furnace must be combusted or handled in the off-gas system. This paper examines the requirements, design issues, and conceptual design process for state-of-the-art postcombustion off-gas systems. The relevant design considerations of safety, environment, energy consumption, and maintenance are presented, and the relative importance of these key issues are compared and discussed. The benefits of using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling in the design process at the conceptual design stage are also demonstrated. Finally, the design basis and performance of a recent Hatch-engineered system currently in operation is evaluated.

Comparison of the Proterozoic Apparent Polar Wander Path (APWP) for Australia with the corresponding geology of northern Australia suggests that a number of discrete interplate tectonic events, manifested on the APWP as bends or inflections, may have controlled sedimentary basin evolution, ore fluid production and the timing of mineralisation. Similar features in the Phanerozoic APWP for the North American plate appear to correlate with major orogenic events, basin deformation, movement and 'entrapment' of hydrocarbons and minerals. Interplate tectonic events cause intraplate deformation which in turn controls the subsidence/uplift and sedimentation histories of the basins. Interplate events are thus responsible for creating, deforming and destroying sedimentary basins and the associated petroleum and mineral systems. The basins of northern Australia show remarkable similarities in the successions of volcanic and sedimentary deposits. Unconforrnities of regional or sometimes only local extent have been mapped between the major sedimentary sequences and it is predicted that interplate tectonic events corresponding to bends or inflections on the APWP directly reflect the processes that have produced these widespread unconformities. These processes are also likely to have controlled the geometry and character of the fluid migration pathways and hence the mineralising events. Palaeomagnetic studies of Proterozoic rocks in sedimentary basins provide a tool for predicting the timing of regional mineralisation events, particularly for low-temperature mineral systems. The techniques, when coupled with systematic regional basin analysis, using petroleum exploration techniques, may identify a number of new mineral 'plays' in northern Australia. Prominent inflections in the APWP occur at approximately 1700, 1670, 1650, 1600, 1540, and 1480 Ma. Each of these may be related to a regional compressional deformation, important mineralising event, or significant change in style and type of sedimentation. Most appear to be associated with magnetic overprints. Some of the inflections between 1400 and 540 Ma may also mark significant events in the evolution of Meso- and Neoproterozoic basins. Further work is required to correlate inflections in the APWP with alteration events in order to understand their regional significance.

This paper primarily describes the application of geology to the different mining methods employed in a large underground mine. The steeply dipping stratiform Silver/Lead/Zinc mineralisation at Mount Isa include up to 28 mineable orebodies. The orebodiea are mined by cut and fill, sublevel benching and sublevel open stoping; the method chosen depending mainly on orebody geomechanics.The sources and methods of data collection, and the interpretation process undertaken, are described. The paper emphasises the different geological input required, by each individual mining method, to provide the necessary production and strata control. This input contributes significantly to the success and efficiency of the operations.

An understanding of the way that solutes are transported in mining or natural environments is essential to the development of sound strategies for managing waste disposal. Research on miscible pollutant movement in unsaturated porous media is carried out both experimentally and numerically. Results of numerical modelling are obtained by solving the groundwater flow equation and the solute transport equation. The finite element method is employed and comparisons between simulation results and experimental data are found in remarkable agreement.
