Water resources legislation in Brazil is evolving in a number ways. The nature of water resource ownership has changed in the last constitution (1988) so that now all water remains the property of the state and not the individual. There is also an increasing amount of legislation to control water access from the environment and regulation over water quality for water discharged. Finally, in some regions charging for water has been introduced and this is expected to become more wide-spread over the next few years. Increasing government attention to water legislation creates an increased need for mine sites to improve water management. As a fundamental basis for this, it is necessary to make robust estimates of mine site water balances, which also requires knowledge of the regional water balance to provide context for the mine water use. A conceptual model for mine site and environmental water balance is presented. Issues associated with conventional water monitoring are discussed. It is proposed that introduction of automated monitoring to provide comprehensive and consistent data is attractive. However, there remain a number of cultural and practical impediments to purchase, implementation and maintenance of effective monitoring, which are summarised.

The discovery of copper and nickel sulphides in the Riwaka Complex in 1967 led to considerable exploration activity by a number of companies. Various exploration techniques used by these companies are summarised and discussed. Activity of these companies shows that mineralisation is mainly confined to the southern, ultramafic section of the Riwaka Complex where geological mapping recognised sixteen units within, or associated with the Riwaka Complex. Significant pyrrhotite, pentlandite chalcopyrite mineralisation is restricted to biotite feldspar pyroxenites and to clinopyroxenite units. Lesser and more erratically distributed pyrite chalcopyrite pyrrhotite mineralisation occurs in poikilitic pyroxene hornblendites, melanocratic gabbros, and in marginal diorite lenses. It is suggested that a linear belt of layered ultramafic and mafic rocks described in Fiordland by Williams (1974) may be a southern extension of the Riwaka Complex. The Riwaka Complex has been classified as belonging to the Picritic subtype, (Tholeiitic suite), of Naldrett and Cabri, (1976), and as such it is concluded that it exhibits substantial potential for the discovery of economic copper and nickel deposits. It is considered that the complex is a multiphase differentiated intrusion emplaced in a major tensional fracture zone that developed in a relatively stable tectonic environment, namely a succession of middle Paleozoic shallow water shelf sediments. Based on sparse available evidence it is suggested that the Riwaka Complex was intruded in the lower to middle Permian. It is further suggested that the tensional fracturing was initiated by the onset of subduction process which were responsible for the development of the Permian volcanic arcs and ophiolite belt in the north west Nelson area.

The Main lode in the Anwia Gold deposit is difficult to interpret due partly to the fact that three separate grid and drill hole orientations exist over the area and partly due to a lack of understanding of the controls on the high-grade mineralisation. Scattered high gold grades and multiple veining orientations add to the confusion. Sectional interpretations of the lode are often misleading due to the multiple orientations of drilling. Initial attempts to define a high-grade constrained geological model were not successful due to the inability to establish any geological continuity that would hold together in three dimensions. As a consequence the initial geostatistical domaining for the Main lode at Anwia comprised a simple broad mineralised envelope split by the weathering profiles. Subsequently an analysis correlating subjective qualitative logging information with grade plus utilisation of LeapfrogTM software, together with extensive geological re-interpretation resulted in the definition of a coherent high-grade shoot within the Main lode. The resource was re-estimated including this new domain as a high-grade hard boundary. Estimations on both models were carried out using uniform conditioning, which is a recoverable resource estimation methodology that estimates tonnages and metal above a series of cut-offs for SMU (selective mining unit) sized blocks. This paper compares the tonnages and metal contents that are calculated from the two estimation runs, both at a zero cut-off and a series of higher cut-offs. The results confirm that the estimation methodology has been implemented correctly as the tonnage and metal content at zero cut-off is the same for both models. The resource tabulations and grade tonnage curves predicted by the two models highlight the differences that can occur at higher cut-offs when realistic high-grade domaining is implemented. The results also reinforce the point that recoverable resource models are intended to address selectivity issues and are not substitutes for good geological modelling. Recoverable resource techniques, such as uniform conditioning, will not correctly estimate high-grade zones that have not been explicitly modelled.

The concentrating plant of the Broken Hill South Limited was described in Proceedings No. 44, Australasian Institute Mining and Metallurgy, December, 1921, by Wainwright and Read. It was erected on the present site in 1907 and 1908.From that date, the plant has undergone various alterations consistent with metallurgical improvements. By 1925, the timber work of the gravity secti"on had seriously deteriorated, so much so, that, when the machinery was working, the floors and supports vibrated badly, causing heavy maintenance costs.In 1928, it was decided to erect a new gravity-treatment section, to be followed later by a new flotation section.

The ground handling system needed for the second lift of the underground block caving operation at Northparkes Mines had to link into the existing infrastructure. Production requirements indicated that an annual output of 5 Mtpa was necessary from a depth of approximately 850 m. The shaft that serviced the first lift stopped at a depth of 520 m. This paper covers the selection of the design for the system and the factors that were taken into consideration in making the decision. It will describe the installation program and methodology and highlight areas of significance and then detail some of the issues concerning commissioning of the ground handling system.

The complexities of mining in current economic conditions, where ore extraction schedules are varied on a weekly basis so as to ensure constant supply to the process plant, can result in a number of scenarios that pose geotechnical challenges. This paper presents a case study where alterations in the mining schedule of a particular mine resulted in the necessity to mine under a large uncompacted embankment, ie integrated tailings and mine waste land form. To effectively ensure that ore recovery was maximised, a well-designed slope monitoring system to evaluate design performance and to provide timely warning of impending failures was imperative. In order for an appropriate slope monitoring strategy to be developed, a thorough understanding of the potential slope failure mechanisms, capabilities and limitations of available monitoring techniques is required. Communication of the monitoring results and response strategy to alarms generated by monitoring systems must also be carefully considered to maximise effectiveness. The results of preliminary stability modelling can be used to guide the design of a monitoring system, which in turn can then generate data which can be used to iteratively refine the geotechnical model. This paper illustrates the development and implementation of a slope monitoring system and associated communication system, using the Daydream embankment at Fortescue Metals Group's (FMG's) Cloudbreak Operations as a case study.

A better connection between laboratory- and pilot-scale test results, and heap bioleaching performance can be achieved by generating reliable information on the fundamental microbial, chemical and physical processes that occur in heaps and incorporating this information into a comprehensive and robust model. More efficient heap bioleaching, particularly of chalcopyrite, has the potential to add value to the mining industry as well as deliver attractive environmental and social benefits to the communities within which those companies operate.The results of fundamental chemical and microbiological studies of the leaching mechanism, the temperature dependence of chalcopyrite bioleaching, and the optimisation of leaching conditions are described with examples from full-scale heaps. The development and application of a number of novel techniques and tools has assisted our understanding of heap subprocesses mineralogy, hydrology, chemistry and microbiology. The heap bioleaching model HeapSim, which embodies a large number of effects not previously accounted for in other models, continues to be refined and has been applied successfully to the study of several heap bioleach systems.

The Macraes mine is producing 175 000 ounces Au/year from a mesothermal deposit with total resource of at least five million ounces. The deposit is hosted in greenschist facies Otago Schist, a widespread Mesozoic metasedimentary sequence that forms the basement of the South Island of New Zealand. Mineralisation was controlled by a late metamorphic shear zone which had both brittle and ductile structures accompanying mineralisation. The shear zone dips shallowly (about 15¦), subparallel to the shallow-dipping regional foliation, and mineralization occurred during southwesterly-directed thrust motion. Mineralisation occurred under greenschist facies conditions (about 350¦C) during uplift of the Otago Schist in the late Jurassic. No syn- or late-metamorphic igneous bodies occur within the schist belt. The hosting shear zone is up to 120 m thick, and is traceable for more than 30 km along strike. The shear zone is truncated by an underlying low angle normal fault that juxtaposes mineralised lower greenschist facies rocks on to unmineralised upper greenschist facies rocks.

High aluminium steel is a promising advanced steel known for its exception properties and holds significant economic and strategic importance. However, the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 based slag with high alumina content reacts vigorously with alumina refractories during the smelting process at high temperature, seriously affecting the safe and efficient production of furnaces and resulting in the formation of Al2O3-MgO non-metallic inclusions within the molten steel. This is a bottleneck problem for high-quality steel refining, and the key reaction path during the corrosion remains unclear. The dissolution reaction mechanism of alumina refractories in high alumina CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 slags under a weak static magnetic field was investigated in this work, using high temperature laser confocal microscopy and in situ radiation spectroscopy techniques. The results indicate that the interaction between the high alumina slags and the alumina refractories is governed by free radical reactions. The dissolution of alumina forms AlO and AlO2 radicals. The reaction rate increases with the C/S ratio of the slag due to its low polymerisation. The reaction between non-bridging oxygen and AlO2 free radicals accelerates the generation of AlO and O2ꞏ- radicals. The reaction layer composed of calcium aluminate is formed through the recombination of AlO, Caꞏ+ and O2ꞏ- radicals. The weak static magnetic field induces the Zeeman splitting of free radical pairs and intersystem crossing occurs, promoting the formation of triplet free radical pairs through the hyper-fine coupling effect. The reaction can be significantly inhibited as the triplet free radical pair does not meet Pauli’s incompatibility principle. This discovery perfects the structure theory of molten slags with radicals and provides supplement to the design of the highly slag-resistant refractories, and provides the theoretical basis for the development of external field protection technologies for high-quality steel refining.

The channel iron deposits (CID) (Ramanaidou, Horwitz and Morris, 1991; Morris, Ramanaidou and Horwitz, 1993; Ramanaidou, Morris and Horwitz, 2003; Morris and Ramanaidou, 2007) are one of the two major iron ore types mined in the Hamersley Province. The CID provided around 41 per cent of the total of 268 Mt of iron ore mined from the Hamersley Province in 2006. The current CID resource is around seven billion tonnes. The CID deposits occupy numerous meandering palaeochannels in a mature surface that includes Precambrian rocks and ferruginous palaeogene valley fill. These palaeochannels are generally less than a kilometre but can range to several kilometres in width and from one metre to more than 100 m thick. The two currently mined CID areas are located:in the western Hamersley Province in the Robe palaeochannel, and in the east in the Yandi palaeochannel. These two major CID channels extend over 100 km to 150 km, with the Robe system up to 5 km wide. The granular ore facies typically contains ooids and lesser pisoids with haematite nuclei and goethite cortices, with abundant goethitised wood/charcoal fragments and goethitic peloids, minor clay and generally minimal porous goethitic matrix. Post deposition weathering is common and produced secondary facies.Ooids and pisoids were mostly derived from the stripping of a well- vegetated deep ferruginous surface. The peloids were derived both intraformationally from fragmentation and reworking of desiccated goethite-rich mud. Minute wood/charcoal fragments in the soil that were initially replaced by goethite and then dehydrated to haematite, formed nuclei for many ooids and pisoids. In addition, abundant, generally small (in situ by goethite within the consolidating CID. This profusion of fossil wood, both as ooids and pisoids nuclei and as discrete fragments as well as the local presence of kenomagnetite suggests major episodic wild fires in heavily vegetated catchments. The goethitic matrix was the result of chemically precipitated iron hydroxyoxides, resulting from leaching of iron-rich soils in an organic environment.

After the closure of mines they naturally start to fill up with water. As a result, hydraulic gradients develop between adjacent mines and different hydraulic water pressures are exerted onto peripheral areas or compartments within mines. This results in water flow between mines, or onto the surface. This flow is referred to as intermine flow. The geometry of the collieries in the central Witbank Coalfield make intermine flow possible in several areas. Since the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry declared intermine flow as one of its greatest concerns for granting closure to South African mines, much research into this phenomenon has been undertaken. The importance of the quantification lies in the DepartmentÆs goal of sustainable water management, and the possible long-term financial implications these flows could have for individual mines. The challenges of determining intermine flow are numerous, and attention is focused on the identification of areas where these flows can take place. Detailed mining plans on a regional scale are required, and detailed coal-seam floor data are combined to provide targets for possible interaction between these mines. The quantification of these flows is problematic due to the uncertainties regarding geometrical configurations and the variation in site-specific hydraulic characteristics of the coal and overlying lithilogical layers. To this end, use has been made of several analytic solutions and numerical flow modelling. Stage curves (volume versus elevation curves) for the opencast and underground workings have been calculated and first-order estimates for intermine flow or decant from these areas have been determined. The numerical modelling methodology entailed a down-scaling approach, starting with a broad regional model covering the entire area, followed by modelling the interactions between interconnected mines and finally looking in detail at the major areas of interaction. By considering different scenarios within the context of these flows, possible management options for intermine flow can be evaluated in terms of volumes and qualities that might emanate in the post-closure phases. Challenges for the future include obtaining site-specific information on the groundwater hydraulics and acceptable ranges for model parameters, and verifying model results over time.

Concentrating lower and more variable grade ore resources to meet acceptable concentrate quality criteria requires removal of significant amount of gangue minerals. Monitoring plant feed mineralogy and concentrate by on-stream analysis has significant economic benefits in concentrate quality and recovery optimisation. There is a need to develop a sensitive slurry on-line analyser for silica, aluminium, magnesium and other light elements.On-line XRF elemental analysis technology, which is a routine practice in base metal concentrators is not able to measure lighter elements than calcium from slurry. Too much of the X-ray fluorescence signal from lighter elements is absorbed by water. The limitations in the direct measurement of silica and other light elements have restricted its use in some applications. Some light element slurry analysers have been developed based on prompt gamma neutron activation (PGNAA) method but they have not performed up to the expectations. The idea behind Grade Engineering is to exploit the natural heterogeneity of an orebody (spatial, temporal) in order to divert low-value waste out of the mining value chain. Essentially, this involves rejecting material at relatively coarse particle sizes (10 mm to 200 mm). However, lack of knowledge about the inherent particle grade distributions in these coarse particle size ranges limits the opportunities for optimisation. Particle grade distributions are essential for quantifying and modelling gangue liberation and yield curves. These curves can then be used to predict the mass and value flows that will go towards the accept and the reject streams. Particle grade distribution information for particles coarser than 10 mm can be collected based on chemical assays of sufficient number of individual particles. However, for smaller particles (1 mm to 9 mm), a significantly larger number of particles is required for assays. Moreover, in some cases, the mass of individual particles is smaller than the minimum mass required for chemical assaying. Also, other quantification techniques such as automated mineralogy, eg Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA), require extended measurement times to analyse statistically representative numbers of particles at these size ranges. This work investigates the use of 3D X-ray microtomography to fill this quantification gap at these size ranges (1 mm to 9 mm). In-house image processing algorithms are used to estimate the mineral/metal content in each particle. Particle grade distributions, as well as density distributions, are thus produced without a minimum mass requirement and with each scan providing information about tens to hundreds of particles at a time. Mineralogical data from MLA analysis, of finer size ranges, is used to inform X-ray microtomography, so a simpler 3D mineral map can be obtained using the image intensity. Chemical assay information of the scanned samples is used to validate and correct the mineral phase segmentation.

The Australian underground coal industry has experienced substantial improvements in longwall productivity and, as such, the methods of providing a safe and productive mine environment have needed to evolve and develop. Whilst the primary method of controlling atmospheric conditions is by airflow it has become impracticable or impossible for the majority of Australian longwall mines to contend with all environmental hazards with primary ventilation alone.If the ventilation circuit cannot provide a safe and productive mine environment at an acceptable cost and circuit duty then supplementary controls are required. Examples include pre-gas drainage, post-gas drainage, gas utilisation, refrigeration and innovative dust control systems. Of the 21 longwall operations surveyed in Australia, there were 13 in New South Wales and eight in Queensland.This study represents a timely opportunity for the industry to examine the primary and supplementary ventilation systems implemented in Australian longwall mines and to discuss how to equip the industry to successfully face the future of underground longwall ventilation management in Australia.CITATION:Webber, M, Belle, B and Rowland, J, 2017. The control system of a mine winder or other variable speed drive has many component parts that must work together to provide the required functional performance of the machine, together with comprehensive safety features, reliability, maintainability, user-friendliness and efficiency. Modern winders use digital control technology extensively and hence software design is a major part of the overall system. It is not practical to simulate an entire mine winder in a single computer model because of the sheer mathematical complexity of the behaviour of many of the components. However, most component parts can be simulated quite easily, and related parts of the control system software can be simulated. Such simulations allow control software algorithms to be developed and tested in isolation from the real plant. Tests can be performed on the model without fear of injury to personnel or damage to the valuable plant. For example, speed regulator control algorithms and stability settings can be adjusted to and beyond the limits of stable operation, and near optimum settings can be found. This is particularly important, for example, when designing closed loop controls for emergency brake systems. Obviously, care must be taken to ensure that the computer model of the plant is realistic and takes into account as many non-linear features of the real plant as possible. Pure mathematical analysis of some systems is very difficult to perform when non-linear plant behaviour is involved. This paper shares a number of practical simulation experiences performed using commercially available software such as Matlab and Simulink to simulate various parts of the control system of a mine winder or other variable speed drive. Demonstrations of the operation of several different computer models are shown during the presentation of the paper.

Through the stress synthesis of many exanples of macrostructure from eastern to western parts of China, it can be concluded that in Chinese tectonics there are two push- twisting forces, one of which ("Rl", from SE to NW) came from the Pacific Ocean plate thrusting over the Chinese continent plate in the eastern part of China; the other ("R2", from SW to NE) resulted from the thrusting of the India plate. The meeting line could be situated along the belt from 104¦-106¦E longitude in the middle part of China. To the south of Qinling the meeting line was an abyssal and giant fault situated from Longmen to the Er Inland Sea where the Tibet-Gansi fold system was intersqueezed to the Sidluan platform; to the north of Qinling, situated on the Fengxiang subsidence of the Eerduosi basin, the meeting line was located about 105¦E in Mongolia and appeared in the form of an arcuate structure, i.e. the Mongolia arcuate structure, which could extend to Beijiaer Lake towards the north. A new special type of structure named rotation-apart structure occurred from Gansu, Qinghai province to Ningxia, Neimeng autonomous region, in the west of Shandong province and in the western part of Chaidamu Basin.

Even though flotation is one of the most important unit operations of mineral processing, accurate modelling of this process for plant performance prediction has remained elusive. In the last four to five years dramatic changes have occurred in our ability to make credible model based predictions. This paper briefly traces the history of flotation modelling from simple (lumped pulp-froth) æchemical kinetic analogueÆ models for single cells to more detailed multi-phase, multi-component population balance models for banks of cells. It then focuses on recent developments in physics-based modelling tools. This includes current efforts to model the forces of attachment and detachment at the individual event level as well as multi-event levels in individual cells and circuits. Two examples of these tools are presented. The first is DEM modelling of the mechanics of motion of bubbles in froths. The second is population balance modelling of the dynamics of flotation circuits describing how they are influenced by upstream processes (such as crushing and grinding) as well as internal process variables (such as aeration, agitation and reagent addition). Applications of each of these tools are discussed.

The project is undertaken by Elgas Pty Ltd, a 50 per cent joint venture between AGL and BOC, to store 65 000 t of LPG in underground storage at Port Botany, NSW. The contractor, Concrete Constructions Pty Ltd, elected to use drilling and blasting techniques. The project specification called for the following works to be excavated: Access Shaft:122 m (out of 140 m total depth), 6.0 m diameter (selected by the contractor),Operation Shaft:125 m (out of 150 m total depth), 4.0 m diameter,Water Curtain Gallery:500 m (Later extended by additional 270 m), 4.0 m wide and 3.5 m high,Storage Caverns:910 m, 14.0 m wide, 11.0 m high,Top Heading:14.0 m wide, 5.5 m high,Bench:14.0 m wide, 5.5 m high,Connection Galleries:250 m, 5.5 m wide, 5.5 m high.A total of 156 000 cubm of rock to be excavated.

The Jabiluka uranium mine was constructed in the Ngarradj catchment, a right bank tributary of Magela Creek in the Northern Territory. The Jabiluka Mineral Lease is adjacent to Kakadu National Park, near an area listed as Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention and recognised under the World Heritage Convention. In the late dry season of 1998 and prior to the 1998 - 1999 wet season, a stream-monitoring program was implemented in the Ngarradj catchment to collect baseline data on sediment transport within the catchment to assess and proactively manage associated impacts caused by mining at Jabiluka. Stream suspended mud concentration, stream discharge and rainfall data were collected for four wet seasons (1998 - 2002) giving an almost continuous data set. The stream system has high natural variability dependent on rainfall intensity and subsequent discharge and pre-wet season fire distribution and intensity. In general, mud concentration is elevated at the commencement of the wet season until about February. This is caused by first-flush removal of surface material detached during the dry season by agents such as bioturbation (including anthropogenic activity), wind erosion and surface desiccation. Water quality trigger values downstream of the mine were derived using upstream percentiles and the before-after-control-impact, paired site design. Both analyses showed no observable impact from mine construction in 1998 or during the study period. However, the impacts of dry season fires could be clearly detected. The data set provides good baseline information for future assessment at Jabiluka and demonstrates the need to view measured parameter values on a catchment-wide basis with knowledge of rainfall, discharge and fire distribution.

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston Open Pit is located on the eastern boundary of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder City and is mining an area traditionally known as the Golden Mile. The pit area has been continuously worked since 1893, predominantly by underground mining methods and more recently through open cut mining. There are over 2000 km of old mine headings and numerous stopes under the open pit area. KCGM has interpreted and digitised the underground mine plans and stope sections into a common database. A 2D-model software package, called Pits, was developed in-house and allows old workings to be displayed at any bench level; this is integrated with 3D Vulcan modelling software, which allows triangulated surfaces to be displayed. Almost every mining activity is affected by underground workings. The effective management of the interaction between current mining and the underground workings is very important for safety and production. A specific ævoidÆ management department has been formed and its broad objective is to minimise the impact of underground workings upon production while maximising safety. Special criteria and procedures have been developed and implemented to keep personnel and machinery from being exposed to unsafe ground. It is of primary importance to accurately define the location and outline of underground workings in advance. Probe drilling has been used as the key tool for that purpose. Various geophysical methods have also been trialled on site to detect underground workings; these are discussed in some detail. This paper discusses ævoidÆ management issues such as data integration, void detection and flagging. The impact of underground workings on mine planing, production and slope stability is also discussed.
