Selected drill core samples from a Ferrobamba-limestone-hosted, magnetite-haematite skarn deposit, located in the Apurimac department of the Andahuaylas-Yauri skarn/porphyry belt of south-eastern Peru, were mineralogically and texturally characterised to gain a preliminary indication of the deposit's potential as an iron ore resource. Optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy/electron probe microanalysis (SEM/EPMA) techniques were utilised to determine the characteristics of magnetite, haematite and/or goethite dominated ore types, including variations in the relative proportions and textural relationships of the ore and gangue minerals. The deportment of elements deleterious to processing performance (eg copper, sulfur and potassium) was determined and the beneficiation potential of the samples was briefly assessed. In drill core sections, the ores are grey to reddish in colour, massive and 'metallic' to dark brown and earthy in character, moderately hard and porous (macro and microporous), with variable gangue infill. Ores often appear weathered, typified by ochreous goethite staining and common minor goethite (except in dense core fragments), occasionally exhibiting a more friable texture with coarse magnetite/martite grains. Silicates and lesser carbonate gangue are visible as blue-green to beige to white scaly and/or shaly surface coatings, and finely particulate infill, often goethite stained. Sulfide-rich ore types also occur in part of the deposit, but are restricted to specific drill holes. Magnetite grain size is relatively coarse, compared with magnetite from typical banded iron formations, whereas discrete silicate gangue is mainly bladed/fibrous and/or layered and micaceous in form. XRD analysis indicates the presence of vermiculite, serpentine, stilpnomelane, chlorite, actinolite and clays. There is a spectrum of ore types representing the gradation from 'fresh' (magnetite-dominated) to oxidised and weathered (martite/goethite-dominated). Martite-dominated samples are generally higher in grade, due to leaching and removal of silicate gangue, resulting in higher macroporosity. Where gangue has been leached out, partial replacement by vitreous goethite and/or hydrohaematite is typical, often preserving the fibrous/layered characteristics of the original silicates.

The northern Drummond and Bowen basins region represents one of AustraliaÆs most prospective areas for epithermal vein and stockwork style gold deposits, with both low and high sulfidation epithermal mineralisation known in the region. 3D-GIS reconstructions, numerical and probabilistic modelling (UDEC, FLAC 3D and WofE) are used here to develop a better understanding of the controls operating on the mineral systems of the region and are aimed at enhancing predictive capabilities. Resource estimation and selective mining of structurally complex, high nugget orebodies presents a major challenge to the Mine Geologist. At the Golden Pig BIF-hosted gold deposit in Western Australia, an estimation method has been developed that replaces an assay-based resource estimate with one based on mineralisation intensity. Subjective coding of the mineralisation intensity has a more robust connection to local grade than drillhole assays. Indicator variograms of the five mineralisation codes are well structured with anisotropy directions similar to observed structural controls. The proportion of each mineralisation code is estimated and a weighted average of the average grade of each code calculated for a block. Initial validation has shown that the model is a good predictor of the mineralisation intensity, and the application of appropriate local average grade for each mineralisation code gives a reliable block grade estimate.

The great variability of mineral and energy prices has motivated some governments to incorporate a windfall profits tax into their mineral taxation regimes. Windfall profits taxes are a means for governments to capture additional mineral revenue when mineral prices are considered higher than some historic level. Governments need to be aware of the effects of such contingent taxes on the exploration, development and operating decisions of mining companies. Mining companies need to be able to calculate the full impact of windfall profits taxes on the economics of their projects. This paper examines the valuation of a multi-phase copper-gold project in the presence of a windfall profits tax. Real options Monte Carlo simulation is used to characterise the different exposures of the mine owner and of the government to the risky cash flow streams that they receive from the project. The results highlight that Monte Carlo simulation paired with the real option valuation method is able to account appropriately for the differing risk exposures, while the traditional discounted cash flow valuation model is not. Our key conclusion for governments and mining companies is that the impact of contingent tax and royalty terms can and should be assessed using advanced valuation techniques, and the results used to improve contract designs under the constraint of actual and perceived fiscal system stability.

The Western Australian Mining and Petroleum Research Institute (WAMPRI) was established in 1981 by the Western Australian Government as a funding and co-ordinating Institute to foster research into the mining and petroleum industry within this State. To June 1984, the Institute has sponsored 34 projects with a total notional value of $2.5 million and an actual cash commitment of $1.5 million. Strong support for WAMPRI has come from Industry with 60 companies contributing half the money needed for the research grants.The 34 WAMPRI projects funded so far cover all aspects of the mining and petroleum geosciences.Several WAMPRI projects are concerned with gold including processing technology and the development of exploration models and techniques, they are providing successful results.Although well supported by Industry there is a surprising lack of applications being submitted to the Institute in the area of mining engineering, where it is felt there is much scope for research projects.

Dump leaching began at Teller in late-1988 at a rate of 4 MTPA and has been progressively expanded to the present rate of 10 MTPA. Teller's on-going commitment to dump leaching is driven by the amenability of gold ores to the process and the availability of large tonnages of low grade gold ore. The sequence of evaluating ores for dump leaching involves rolling bottle tests on coarsely ground ore, followed by small and large column leaching and finally trial heaps. Trial heap tests are very expensive and an alternative approach to this is large diameter column leaching.A four-column permanent facility was built at Teller to specifically evaluate the leaching characteristics of new dump leach ores. Details of construction, operation and dismantling are discussed in the paper. Capital cost for the four column facility was some $45 940, while operating costs are about $24 800 per column.

Two case studies are presented in this paper. The first one discusses a roller compacted concrete water supply dam that was constructed in El Mauro in Chile to provide water for agriculture activities downstream of a copper mine during the dry season. The 23 m high dam used a bituminous geomembrane (BGM) as the low permeability upstream facing element on the dam to control seepage through the dam. This is the first time that a BGM has been used in this application. A deep cut-off trench was used to control seepage beneath the dam and through the abutments. This paper briefly presents the design of the dam, including selection of the concrete mix and maximum aggregate size that the use of the Coletanche BGM allowed, and provides details of the construction, quality control and assurance of the installation of the BGM. An ultrasonic apparatus was used as part of the quality control on the BGM seams.The second case study discusses a tailings dam in Cerro Lindo, Peru (near Chincha), where a watertight BGM was installed on the upstream face. Results are presented of the survey done by a consultant on the behaviour of the dam and in particular of the BGM following an earthquake of magnitude 8.1 in Chincha close to the site. These findings on-site were checked by trials in a laboratory in California. Test results are given and explained.CITATION:Breul, B and McIlwraith, R, 2015. The benefits of fine size separation in magnetite concentration are detailed focusing on published research from various iron ore producers. Basic principles of fine sizing and advancements in screening technology are addressed. A chronological review of research is used to show the evolution of fine sizing applications in the industry, starting with studies that demonstrated the benefit of using fine screens to produce consistent lower silica concentrates, followed by improvements in fine sizing equipment that have made effi cient screen classification in ball mill circuits practical. Case studies are used to demonstrate how positive sizing with screens can be used to significantly shift concentrate ‘grind/grade’ relationships.

The geology of an area in north-western New South Wales, bounded by the South Australian and Queensland borders, latitude 32° S. and longitude 14° E. is discussed.The area involved includes sixteen 1:250,000 standard military sheets and covers approximately 96,000 sq. miles.The geology of the Willyama Complex is not dealt with but a small area of metasediments previously included in this unit is separated and a possible correlation with Precambrian to the east is suggested. Torrowangee Group sediments are described and the problem of nomenclature using a glacial implication is raised.Nine areas of proven Lower Palaeozoic sediments are considered and their relationship to the boundaries of the Bancannia Trough outlined. It is possible that some exposures not yet substantiated by fossil evidence may prove to be Lower Palaeozoic rather than Precambrian in age.The sediments of the Lachlan Geosyncline in the area of the Cobar massif are described and new concepts on the age and distribution of some of the established stratigraphic units are introduced. The absence of rocks of Middle Silurian age probably indicates the time of a major orogeny in this area.Lithology, thickness, and distribution of the Upper Devonian sediments is considered and some of the more recently found fish plate localities are listed.Mesozoic sediments occur in isolated areas of Lower Jurassic age and in the Great Australian (Artesian) Basin. A four-fold subdivision of sediments of the basin has been possible in some areas but lack of sub-surface information at present, precludes the possibility of correlation with the type sections in Queensland.Units in the Cainozoic are subdivided and a five fold subdivision of the Quaternary, at present being used throughout western New South Wales, is described.

Gold dissolution by cyanide requires the presence of oxygen which is usually supplied by sparging compressed air into the gold containing slurry. For those ores that contain certain obnoxious substances that consume oxygen, maintaining the required minimum level of dissolved oxygen can be troublesome. One of the most economical solutions to the problem of low dissolved oxygen, especially in plants that have air compressors installed, is to enhance the rate of oxygen mass transfer. The oxygen mass transfer rate was measured in a two phase system using two different sparger arrangements, and with addition of a frother that is known to reduce the bubble size produced by the sparger. The common sparger system was shown to be inefficient compared with a readily available but under utilised method of gas dispersion which introduces air directly below the reactor turbine. Transfer of this technology to an operating plant confirmed the beneficial effect of the improved sparger system. The addition of the frother did decrease the bubble size, but it also reduced the oxygen mass transfer rate.

Mine-groundwater interaction at the Pasminco Rosebery Mine (PRM), western Tasmania, deserves special attention due to the unique climate and mining environment present. High rainfall and low evapotranspiration result in an excess of water, an uncommon problem at Australian sulfide bearing mines. Research is being undertaken to delineate current subsurface fluid flows and predict future fluid flows in order to improve management after mine closure. Acid mine drainage generation is well developed in abandoned mines throughout the area. If acid mine drainage is not controlled after mine closure, significant environmental degradation could occur in the receiving waters of the Pieman River system. The study area encompasses the heavily forested Mount Black, and underlying PRM workings. Groundwater flows beneath Mount Black through a crystalline fractured rock aquifer with faults and underground mine workings observed to act as the major hydraulic conduits. Recharge is controlled by local precipitation, and the ultimate discharge is thought to be the Pieman River system, which forms the topographic low in the area. Slug tests have been used in conjunction with the mineÆs extensive geotechnical database to spatially evaluate variation in hydraulic conductivity. In fractured rock terrain associated with mining, rock quality designation data can be a useful tool in delineating areas of similar hydraulic conductivity when combined with conventional hydrogeological methods. A GIS, mine planning software, an environmental and a geological database are linked to form the input for groundwater modelling.

This paper addresses the unique environ- mental programmes which prevail at Ranger and their importance in the future profitability, of Ranger Uranium Mines Pty Ltd. (RUM) Industrial relations, general safety, and occupational health have long been regarded as part and parcel of the concept to 'manage for profits'. More recently, the need for environmental protection has also become an important management consideration. This is particularly so at the Ranger Uranium Mine where environmental protection is very closely and continuously regulated. Since the commencement of operations at Ranger some three years ago the company has operated within these regulations and demonstrated clearly that yellowcake can be produced efficiently, economically and safely. The company also recognises that in order to ensure continuity of production, it will have to continue to operate within these strictly supervised Regulations.

Ore reserve estimates form a basis for strategic mine planning at Argyle Diamonds open pit and alluvial operations. Most ore reserve statements are mainly concerned with resource tonnage and grade. Because diamond deposits are low grade, high value resources, diamond quality ($/carat) is also an important parameter. Relatively large variations in quality and/or grade can occur. These variations must be taken into account before the resource potential can be fully assessed. Computers (HP9000 and PC's) are utilised to compile resource inventories. Resource inventories are then ranked on an economic basis. This paper discusses the methods used to compile resource inventories and explains how these are then used to present ore reserve estimates in terms of resource potential.

The Izok massive sulphide deposits are located in the Northwest Territories of the remote western Canadian Arctic. Together they represent one of the highest grade undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. Metall Mining Corporation is presently engaged in a feasibility study on developing the Izok property as well as actively exploring for additional reserves. The Izok deposits are Archean-aged, volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) bodies hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks. The hangingwall package includes additional felsic volcanoclastics, dacitic and basaltic flows, thin sulphide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sediments. The felsic volcanics are intruded by syn- to late-hydrothermal dacitic dykes and sills and post-hydrothermal gabbroic dykes and sills. Both intrusives are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to overlying flows. All lithologies are cut by much later irregular granitic pegmatite dykes and regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene homfels grade. The deposits occur within a large kilometre-scale soda-depleted alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hangingwall rocks to the deposits are characterised by zones of muscovite-biotite (with or without sillimanite), lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite (with or without anthophyllite), and locally intense silicificified and albitised zones. All lithologies have been affected by a later calcic metasomatic alteration. As currently defined, the Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag deposits comprise a cluster of four complexly-zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central, and newly discovered Inukshuk deposits. The first three deposits are amenable to open pit mining while development of the Inukshuk deposit will require underground methods. The combined mineral inventory of the Northwest, North, Central and Inukshuk deposits at present totals 15.6 million tonnes with a grade of 2.4 per cent Cu, 13.8 per cent Zn, 1.4 per cent Pb, and 74.6 g/t Ag.

A broad zone of intra-plate volcanism occurs for some 3000 km along the E. Australian coastal regions, extending from far northern Queensland southwards to Tasmania, westwards to western Victoria, and into southeastern South Australia. The age range, taken over the whole region, extends from Eocene to Holocene. Wellman & McDougall (1974) recognised the occurrence of three distinct types of volcanic occurrences: (a) Lava field provinces, dominantly basaltic and commonly strongly undersaturated, but of variable size. Large lava fields are especially exemplified by the younger provinces in northern Queensland (e.g. Nulla, McBride), and western Victoria. (b) Central volcano provinces, in which a reasonably well defined volcanic edifice is discernable. Such provinces are built of mildly undersaturated to saturated mafic lavas, but are also characterised by felsic volcanism (and often substantial mafic and felsic intrusive phases). Examples are the Springsure-Minerva Hills province, the Tweed and Focal Peak Shields (southeastern Queensland to northeastern N.S.W.), and the Nandewars, Warrumbungles, and Canobolas volcanic centres (N.S.W.). (c) A single leucitite province in N.S.W. Wellman and McDougall (1974) were able to show that the central volcano provinces exhibit a remarkably regular southward age migration pattern, the calculated migration rate being 66 + 5 mm yr , and these authors interpreted this in terms of the northward passage of the Australian plate across a fixed 'hotspot' within the upper mantle. The leucitite province also fits this migration pattern. The lava field provinces apparently exhibit more erratic regional age distribution patterns, but Sutherland (1981) has interpreted the data in terms of a multiple 'hotspot' model. Two commercially available through-the-Earth (TTE) communications systems were evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. One system utilises magnetic field (H-field) antennae while the other system utilises electric field (E-field) antennae to achieve communication. A large portion of this mine is overlain by an inactive gas-oil field composed of densely spaced wells. This feature provided a unique opportunity to determine the impact of cased wells on both TTE technologies. The following communication modes were investigated: surface to underground, underground to surface, underground to underground and real-time two-way communications. Standard deployments of the TTE systems using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations under certain circumstances. As a result, the design and deployment that will optimise TTE transmissions are unique to each system and to the specific area of the mine. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. BHP Minerals Ltd operates an open cut iron ore mining operation on Koolan Island, off the coast north of Derby in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The mine comprises a number of pits, the largest of which is situated adjacent to the coast on the southern side of the island. The lowest bench is currently at RL +2 m, and the mine has planned ultimate depth of RL -82 m. Mining has already extended below the pre-existing water table level, and below mean sea level. In 1984, an extensive program of drilling, geophysics and test pumping was instigated to evaluate the aquifer hydraulic properties and the nature of the groundwater flow regime. With the aid of computer modelling, predictions have been made of the likely dewatering and depressurization requirements, and a conceptual pumping and drainage system has been designed.

The variation in coal properties and the coal seam reduced level can be analysed using partial trend-surface analysis techniques. For the area studied seam reduced level and seam thickness data from the Bulli Coal yield trend-surfaces with a high coefficient of determination, since they have relatively small systematic local and random components in their overall variation. Sulphur content appears to have no significant re.gi_onal trend, and phosphorus content has a very weak regional trend. Other analytical variables have regional trends which are of intermediate strength. The strike-directions of.the statistically significant first degree! trend-surface are similar, sug-gesting.: that the variation of the several coal properties was controlled by a set of- related causes. In the flotation of platinum group minerals pyroxene is a major gangue mineral. This study shows using zeta potential and ToF-SIMS analyses that when pyroxene is exposed to copper, nickel and/or calcium ions in solution at alkaline pHs a surface reaction occurs between the hydroxy species, in the case of copper and nickel, or divalent calcium ions and the pyroxene surface which influences the floatability of the pyroxene. Following exposure to copper and nickel ions at pH 9 addition of SIBX resulted in the pyroxene floating readily. It is also shown, in the case of copper, that the activating effect of the adsorbed copper hydroxy species can be reduced by the addition of complexing amines prior to SIBX. Proposals are made to explain these observations.

"In the design and operation of mineral processing plants, knowledge of the variability of ore properties and that of the expected metallurgical performance within the orebody is of great importance in order to avoid both production constraints due to inadequate design and less than expected metallurgical performance during operation. Of the many properties that determine the performance of downstream separation processes, such as flotation, gravity separation and leaching etc the liberation characteristics are of primary importance.Current methods of evaluating liberation characteristics of ores such as the use of Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) and QEMSCAN techniques are expensive and suffer from the drawback that these tests are performed on comminuted particles at a given grind size and/or samples of product streams. This problem could be overcome by developing predictive models of liberation that can predict the grade distribution of comminuted products at any grind size based on texture of the parent rock. This paper discusses a procedure that has been developed to predict liberation using information obtained from a sample of the parent rock such as drill core, based on Barbery’s liberation models. The required characteristic statistical functions have been evaluated from image analysis techniques using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the parent rock and narrowly sized comminuted particles. Such information can then be used in a predictive model to predict or explain the variability of metallurgical performance at various grind sizes used in future operating plants. The model will predict not only the valuable mineral liberation but also gangue liberation, which will be useful to those who are looking to remove liberated gangue from comminution circuits.CITATION:Subasinghe, G K N, and Dunne, R, 2016.
