Investigations of the Mineragraphic Section; Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, have included most of the known stannite-bearing ores in Australia, and have revealed several new occurrences of this relatively uncommon mineral. They provide information about its paragenesis, and its possible effect on tin recovery, that may be of general interest.Several of the investigations used in the preparation of this paper, were made in the first instance by pr. F. L. Stillwell or in collaboration with him.CASSITERITE-SULPHIDE ORES IN NORTH-WEST- TASMANIA Stannite is a minor component of most of the cassiterite sulphide ores of north-western Tasmania. These include the orebodies of Mount Bischoff, the Cleveland mine, Moina, the Stanley River district, Renison Bell, and the Heemskirk-Zeehan district, and form a well defined metallogenetic provence which is related to the Devonian granites of this part of Tasmania.In these ores mineralisation began. with deposition of cassiterite, a little wolfram, and quartz, topaz and tourmaline. With falling temperature, deposition of cassiterite ceased and arsenopy-rite, pyrite, and especially pyrrhotite, formed in abundance, tending to give massive sulphide ore. A little chalcopyrite; stannite, sphalerite and native bismuth accompanied the pyrrhotite. Deposition of quartz ceased after the pyrrhotite, was formed, and the later-formed nonsulphide gangue consists chiefly of carbonates and fluorite. With, the advent of the carbonates the pyrrhotite was altered to fine-gained intergrowths of marcasite and pyrite. Excess iron from the pyrrhotite entered the intergrown carbonate, or was precipitated as magnetite. Some solution of the cassiterite occurred at this stage, the tin being redeposited chiefly as stimnite replacement rims around the residual cassitellrite grains. During the past 18 months several import- ant hydrocarbon discoveries have been made in the Dampier Sub-basin, which is a sedimentary area lying entirely offshore from the Precambrian Pilbara Block in the southern part of 'he Northwest Shelf of Western Australia. This sub-basin is a major sedimentary downwarp forming a northern extension to the Carnarvon Basin. This extension is bounded to the north by the De Grey Nose, separating it from the Beagle Sub-basin. To the south the Dampier Sub-basin merges with the Barrow Sub- basin. Extensive seismic data combined with results from exploration drilling show that the Dampier Sub-basin is a complex depositional basin containing over 20,000 feet of sediments which are mainly Triassic to Recent in age. Tectonically the sub-basin can be divided into seven main structural elements. In a northwest to southeast direction these are the Rankin Platform, the Kendrew Trough, the Madeleine- Dampier Trend, the Lewis Trough, the Legendre- Rosemary Trend, the Enderby Fault Zone and the broad Pilbara Shelf. Mount Isa Mines Limited operates one of the worldÆs largest underground mines in North West Queensland. ItÆs mining and smelting complex produces copper anode, crude lead bullion (containing silver), and zinc concentrate. Copper is recovered in the Copper Concentrator from chalcopyrite ore, converter smelter slag and rotary holding furnace (RHF) slag via grinding and flotation operations. During 2002 a project to optimise cleaner circuit capacity was commenced. Its aims were to minimise copper losses and minimise slag/chalcopyrite cross contamination by reconfiguring existing flotation equipment and the addition of new flotation capacity. To minimise cross contamination a Jameson Cell was installed and dedicated to cleaning of slag concentrates, which had formerly been conducted by three flotation columns operating in series. The flotation columns were re-configured to operate in parallel and dedicated to upgrading chalcopyrite concentrate. In addition a Jameson Cell was installed to reject entrained copper from a prefloat concentrate consisting of talc and carbonaceous pyrite. This paper discusses the logic behind the cleaner circuit expansion, recent test work relating to the Jameson Cell and the installation and commissioning phases. Difficulties relating to the commissioning are reviewed and the solutions to problems are highlighted. The benefits the reconfigured circuit has provided to Mount Isa Mines are also discussed.

For several years, the Geology Department of the University of Canterbury has hosted a series of postgraduate projects in the field of coal studies, supported principally by the Ministry of Energy and to a lesser extent by private companies. These projects have involved mainly West Coast Coalfields, and my own studies have focussed on inorganic geochemical aspects of West Coast coals. Because of the large number of potentially important analyte elements in coal, and the wide diversity of coals occurring in the West Coast region, this project has required a substantial amount of work to be spent on sample collection, sample preparation, development of analytical methods, and actual analysis. Considerable problems must be faced at the sampling stage: Can sufficient information be obtained from whole-seam composites, or should seams be sampled in plies. Ply analysis is preferable, but results of proximate analyses are usually available for composites only. Where multi-seam drillhole samples become available (eg Greymouth Coalfield, where some holes yielded more than six sampled seams), the ply option involves a dramatic increase in the number of samples. I have attempted to strike a workable compromise between geographical coverage of coalfields, and detailed sampling of individual seams at each locality. In many cases, sample material has been used jointly with Jane Newman who has carried out petrographic studies.

Fine grinding technology has become extremely important for Mount Isa Mines Limited in the last decade for flowsheet development for the McArthur River deposit and in rejuvenating the Lead-Zinc Concentrator at Mount Isa. Regrinding products with 80 per cent passing seven microns and 12 microns were required, respectively, for the McArthur River ore and the Lead-Zinc Concentrator at Mount Isa. Development of the ISAMILL, a horizontal stirred mill with a gross mill volume of 4000 litres (a net volume of 3000 litres), has been successful in delivering the required grinding product sizes with an energy consumption acceptable to a mining operation. The ISAMILL performance for processing both lead and zinc streams at Mount Isa is discussed in this paper, including the milling energy efficiency, the media wear and the size-by-size recovery data for one flotation process following the fine regrinding stage. The potential use of the ISAMILL technology at various phases of the mining cycle is also discussed.

Cores of pre-Tertiary basement from ten oil exploration wells are related petrologically to the "axial", "marginal" and "shelf" facies of the New Zealand Geosyncline.A NW. Nelson-type basement is inferred beneath peninsular Taranaki and the western continental shelf. The terms Taranaki Basin and Wanganui Basin are re-defined and the terms North Wanganui Basin, South Wanganui Basin, Pipiriki High, Taranaki Fault, and Turakina Fault are proposed. Major faults are interpreted as of mainly transcurrent type and appear to form the western part of a splay at the northern end of the Alpine Fault. Evidence for a major Cook Strait Fault is reviewed.

The Truong Son Fold belt in Indochina hosts the significant Sepon gold-copper district (Laos) and the similar gold-basemetal districts of Phuoc Son and Bong Mieu (Vietnam). With over seven years of exploration, Toronto-listed Olympus Pacific Minerals Inc, is one of few foreign companies that have to date made a substantial investment in mineral exploration in Vietnam.Much of this work has been conducted along the Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture, on the south-eastern limb of the Truong Son Fold belt on the Vietnamese side of the border with Laos. These programs have produced a significant number of gold prospects at varying stages of exploration development. The Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture is a major Paleozoic subduction zone that extends from northern Laos, through Central Vietnam and out into the South China Sea.It represents a Lower Mesozoic collision zone between the Paleozoic-age Truong Son fold-belt terrain to the north, with the crystalline terrain of the Pre-Cambrian Kontum Block to the south. Since its formation, it has been a locus of deep faulting, continental accretion, intensive intrusive activity and mineralisation. This paper briefly discusses the geological setting, structure, metamorphism, mineralisation, exploration history, and proposed mining development of the Olympus Phuoc Son Gold Project, with particular reference to the Phuoc Son û Tam Ky suture.

It is a common misconception that the grant of mining tenure, whether it be an Exploration Permit, Mineral Development Licence or Mining Lease, will entitle the holder to access all land within it in order to explore or mine. The ability for miners to access their tenure in order to undertake activities is critical to the industry. While significant time and energy is quite rightly dedicated to resolving native title and cultural heritage issues before the commencement of mining operations, the same cannot always be said for addressing potential impediments that arise as a result of the overlap between mining and other tenures. Miners should be aware of the overlaps that occur with other tenure and the impact of these overlaps on the minerÆs ability to explore or produce from the area. The existence of an overlap with petroleum tenure, nature refuges, national parks, wild river areas or reserves such as aboriginal land leases are all likely to have an impact on the minerÆs ability to access the area and conduct activities. In some instances, such as an overlap with petroleum tenure, Queensland legislation encourages the miner to reach agreement with the holders of the overlapping tenure. However, in other instances, such as an overlap with a national park, mining tenure is unlikely to be granted at all. This paper summarises the impacts and impediments that arise as a result of overlaps of tenure that are likely to affect mining operations. It also provides examples of how these impediments can, if possible, be overcome under Queensland legislation.

A new crude ilmenite beneficiation process was recently proposed that allowed for the preparation of a smelter grade ilmenite from ilmenite with elevated chromium content. Magnetising roasting was not utilised in the process. As part of this circuit an ilmenite low susceptible reject stream was produced that had a low magnetic susceptibility. In this article a magnetising roasting process was investigated to beneficiate this material. Tests were conducted on material produced by pilot scale simulations on a typical South African East Coast heavy mineral reserve. The results obtained were compared to those published in literature for crude ilmenite. The small-scale experiments were used to define approximate operational limits for the oxidising roasting of a low susceptible ilmenite low susceptible reject stream, although industrial roasting conditions may differ significantly from those obtained in laboratory units. In a next phase these results will be confirmed on pilot plant scale.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Base metal sulfides at the Currawong volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposit in the Lachlan fold belt of Victoria, south-east Australia, were formed in the late Silurian, but D2 deformation of the deposit in the Devonian Bindian orogeny was responsible for structural repetition that created the resource. The primary sulfide lenses were stacked by reverse-sense shear zones within a volcano-sedimentary sequence dominated by dacitic intrusions and turbidites. Shear zones were localised along lithological contacts, including the margins of the sulfide lenses. The competent dacitic intrusions did not fold during D2; folding was restricted to the packages of metasedimentary rocks. Overturning occurs within, but not between, the metasedimentary packages. The overall geometry of the deposit is that of a duplex, but the detailed shape does not conform to idealised duplex types, probably because of post-D2 deformation. A significant complicating factor for understanding the deposit, and for resource evaluation, is the dramatic variation in deposit geometry along strike, which may also be due to post-D2 deformation. Bulk Ore Sorting (BOS) has the potential to add significant value to mining operations by manipulating the feed grade and throughput to the processing plant. However, assessing the performance of BOS is complex, as it is influenced by geology, equipment, spatial and time domains. This increases the risk (real and perceived) of the technology. To manage risk, brownfield operations have the option to: (a) first test the variability in feed grade using a detector on the feed conveyor and subsequently construct the diverter and associated materials handling equipment when the value is established; or (b) conduct site trials with standalone sorting plants. The approaches described for brownfield projects are not available for greenfield projects where the in-situ heterogeneity needs to be quantified and translated into an economic evaluation to test the viability of BOS. Ausenco has developed a methodology that allows assessing the in-situ ore heterogeneity and uses an in-house technoeconomic model to determine the value of BOS for greenfield projects and assess the effects of sorting performance on project economics. The in-situ grade heterogeneity can be measured on a length of drill core and fitted to a mathematical model to assign a heterogeneity index. Given the spatial location, this heterogeneity index can be mapped across a deposit in combination with the average grade. Linking this information with relevant mixing models can determine the likely technical performance of BOS at an operation. However, the real value is only realised when this technical understanding is linked with an economic model and used to optimise the mine plan. Three case studies will be presented that show how Ausenco applies this methodology to assess the value of bulk ore sorting for greenfield studies.

Rock-breaker automation and remote operation improves the safety and efficiency of mining operations. This paper presents an overview of the Rocklogic rock-breaker automation system architecture that provides collision avoidance, automated parking and remote operation functionality. The system consists of a distributed computer control system that interfaces with sensors attached to the rock-breaker, the rock-breaker hydraulics and the site infrastructure. We present results of an automated Transmin rock-breaker installed in a production environment at an underground Australian mine site. The system has been in production use for over 900 days, during which there have been no reported collisions and 100 per cent adoption of the remote operation technology. As a result, Rocklogic has significantly improved the safety of rock-breaking operations and reduced the rock-breaking cycle time, thereby improving the site’s overall throughput.CITATION:Boeing, A and Douglas, E, 2014. The Argyle AK1 orebody was discovered in 1979 and subsequently found to be a large, economically viable reserve with high grade diamondiferous ore. Production began via an open pit operation at the end of 1985 and has continued for some 25 years to present day. This, however, will come to an end in the next few years with production moving to an underground operation via block-cave mining methods.A series of studies from 2001 - 2005 was carried out; diamond drilling commenced after approval in 2006, from an exploration drive to determine the likelihood of the current proposed block cave operation.In 2006, development of the block cave project began, in order to realise the part of the orebody below the extent of the open pit mining operation.Development of the block cave technique, comprising an undercut level beneath the target zone of the orebody with subsequent extraction level 15 - 20 m beneath, relies largely on a number of block-caving parameters (hydraulic radius, rock type, structure and orientation of stress and grade of the orebody). These all have an influence on cave ability and eventual profit of the operation. Evaluation of further potential for taking this orebody beyond the block cave phase with options such as sublevel-caving are being considered for the UG-2 portion of the resource/reserve. Diamond drilling for this work is currently under revise.The challenges faced in transitioning form the surface operations to the underground, comprising a changing workforce, converging development drives, underground aquifers, major excavations and transportation of ore via automation are intriguing.

The purpose of this paper is to present a detailed account of the development of the Blasthole Diamond Drilling method of stoping now used at the property of Big Bell Mines Limited, in Western Australia.The ore body is one of the large low grade gold deposits of this State, being a continuous lens 1,850 ft. long and ranging in width from 15 ft. at the ends to 120 ft. at the widest part, the average width being 59 ft. It was first worked in 1913 by a local syndicate, and up to 1924, when operations ceased, 64,448 tons of 3.4 dwt. ore were mined from a shallow open cut. Between 1928 and 1932, 15 deep diamond drill holes were put down to test the ore body at vertical depths ranging from 100 to 700 ft. On the information gained from these drill holes, Premier Gold Mining Co. Ltd. began underground explQration. A level was driven at a depth of 253 ft. and crosscuts put out to the full width of the, orebody at intervals of 100 ft. along the strike, all ore broken being put through a sampling plant. On completion of this sampling,' Big Bell Mines Limited was formed as the operating company, and a plant with a capacity of 1,000 long tons per day was erected and mining and milling operations were commenced in 1937. This paper is based on a case study from a mine site that operates two gyratory primary crushers. These crushers were encountering problems, which included inconsistent P80, reduced liner life tonnage and, on some occasions, catastrophic failure of the liners.As part of an evaluation process, both crushers were ‘mapped’ using a technology for condition monitoring and modelling of the crusher’s wear components. The technology provides comprehensive coverage of the crusher’s concaves and mantle at 100 mm intervals. It also automatically assesses wear rate between inspections and determines the highest wear areas. Outcomes include projected optimum reline dates at target replacement thicknesses, the identification of asymmetrical wear patterns, and the accurate measurement of open and closed (OSS/CSS) side settings.A comprehensive study was performed to optimise the performance of both these crushers at site. Over a period of seven liner service lives, the strategies to improved performance included liner analysis (concaves and mantle profile analysis), tonnes per day (t/d) and tonnes per hour (t/h) analysis, mantle reutilisation, detection and control of loose concaves, and detection and control of uneven wear and hot spots.These strategies resulted in the improved mechanical and operational performance of both crushers through concave and mantle redesign, OSS/CSS control, accurate wear forecasting plus other initiatives.As a result of these initiatives, the site now experiences benefits which include consistent product size, increased tonnes per hour (t/h) for both crushers and the liner life tonnage has doubled. Dissolved air flotation (DAF) in wastewater treatment as a separation process of submillimetre biological flocs is based on the generation of bubble/floc aggregates. DAF is a complex process but has got advantages, such as allowing a high hydraulic load, compared to sedimentation. A thorough knowledge of the physics of the DAF process is, however, still lacking. This paper will present results of experimental studies on three aspects of significance to the separation process û the flow structure in the flotation tank, rise velocities of aggregates, influence of floc size on the separation efficiency. Flow structure. Measurements were performed in a pilot plant mapping and visualising the velocity field. The dispersion water (bubbles) had a decisive influence on the flow structure due to the effect of the bubbles on the bulk water density. Stratified conditions with a less dense, bubble-containing upper layer and a clear water, denser bottom layer were important for a good separation. A simple model of the stratified flow structure was elaborated making it possible to interpret the function of the aggregate rise velocities. Bubble/floc aggregates. The dynamics of single flocs, bubbles, aggregates were visualised using a borescope + CCD video camera + digital recorder + image analysis. Sequences of video frames made it possible to determine the rise velocities of the single aggregates. These velocities were found to be in the range 1 - 9 mm/s with a tendency for large flocs to have higher rise velocities. Separation versus floc size. The floc size distribution was measured in the DAF process. Data from three different DAF cases showed, that large flocs (> about 100 ¦m) were entirely separated, whereas small flocs experienced a less good separation. It was, moreover, found, that a very significant separation of flocs took place in the very upstream end of the separation zone in a pilot plant case.

"The Jaguar project is relatively unique in that it was evaluated, financed, built and operated to completion within the last ten years, providing the opportunity to holistically review and reconcile expectations against the actual outcomes. It is a case study that allows wider conclusions to be drawn with respect to the risks and opportunities involved with project evaluation and execution.Jaguar is located in the Leonora Mining District of Western Australia and was commissioned in mid-2007 as an underground accessed, single high-grade volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposit with an on-site concentrator, producing copper and zinc concentrates exported via the Port of Geraldton to South-East Asian markets.The feasibility study (FS) had several iterations (JML, 2005a); the last dated July 2005 was specifically targeted to secure project funding, and summarised the reserves-only portion of the resource and its planned exploitation. The commissioning of the mine was the transition for the owner Jabiru Metals NL from junior explorer to producer and the project was the dominant asset of the company.Jaguar operated through several significant deviations from the linear project plan set out in the FS, including the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), a corporate takeover and disruption to the mine plan from the onset of material geotechnical issues. Whilst the GFC or mining disruption were not specifically predicted in the FS or peer reviews, the generic effects of the events were assessed in the project risk assessment and they influenced subsequent management decisions. In parallel to the internal project-specific risks, the short planned life of Jaguar was a risk to the continuation of the corporate entity which was being addressed by significant investment into brownfields exploration to extend or replicate the project, and ultimately added value such that attracted a corporate takeover.Holistically, the project delivered the returns predicted in the FS, but in a much different guise than was expected. The Sto Tomas II orebody of Philex Mining Corporation is a porphyry copper deposit located at Padcal, Tuba, Benguet, Philippines. It was mined through open pit method for the first two years starting 1958 and subsequently through underground method using the Block Cave System. The slusher type of draw was employed at the upper levels of the orebody from mid-year of 1959 up to 1994 and then shifted to LHD as the ore became more competent at the lower levels. Application of rock mechanics played a vital role during the conceptualisation of the LHD method of draw, the first of its kind in the Philippines. Rock mechanics is a combined responsibility of the geology and the mine engineering staffs, with the geology providing the vital information to the mine engineering to include in the mine planning the following:the general geology of the orebody; the ground characterisation through rockmass classification; determination of the cavability of the ore column (this includes our experience on airblasts which occurred during the early stage of our last slusher blocks); undercutting sequence; fragmentation of the rockmass in the ore column; drawzone spacing; proper draw control procedure; lay-out of openings; and the design of ground supports based on the rockmass condition. For the proper interpretation of the rockmass that would cater to the diverse mining situations, Philex adopted the modified geomechanics rockmass classification (Mining Rockmass Rating, MRMR) as this system is recognised and used by most of the block cave mine worldwide. This paper aims to discuss and present the role of rock mechanics in the analysis and determination of geomechanical issues encountered in Philex mechanised block cave operation.

Tunnel excavation may induce adverse effects on nearby existing structures/foundations in urban areas. Accurate prediction of tunnelling effects on pile foundations of nearby structures in the urban environment poses a major challenge during design. Several studies have been undertaken to understand the mechanisms of the soil-tunnel-pile interaction, which focused only on influence of tunnelling on nearby existing building and foundations. However, effect of pile loading on existing tunnels did not receive enough research attention so far. So it is essential to measure the response of existing tunnel-lining due to loading on newly constructed pile to assess to the safety against the additional forces/moment caused by pile loading and to evaluate the critical distance for the proposed construction of any structures from the tunnel location. This paper presents result of three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis carried out in ABAQUS to investigate the effects of pile loading on existing tunnels embedded in cohesive soil. It is found that the effects on tunnel lining depend on horizontal separation distance between pile and tunnel as well as location/elevation of pile tip with respect to tunnel location.

Distillation of the large and growing greenhouse literature indicates that: ò Global warming has occurred over the past century or more; ò Build-up of CO2 (and lesser greenhouse gases) in the atmosphere is a fact; ò This build-up is likely to cause further global warming. It does not appear possible to conclude that the observed C02 build up and observed global warming are linked; nor is it yet possible to forecast global or regional climate variation with conviction. The dominant greenhouse gas is C02 with about half the warming potential of those gases emitted by man's activities; and about 80% of anthropogenic C02 emissions are from the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil-fuel C02 emissions arg divided about equally between the developed countries of OECD and the rest of the world. However C02 output growth over the past decade was about 4% for OECD and some 40% elsewhere. Population growth and pressure for better living standards will ensure continued higher growth outside OECD. Uncertainty about the impact of increasing C02 emissions on climate, and the long lead-times involved in limiting the increase in atmospheric C02 concentrations, are good reasons for taking action now. Australia accounts for about 275 million tonnes a year or just over 1% of the CO2 emitted from the world's consumption of fossil fuels, and the fight to control global emissions will be won or lost elsewhere. Australia's participation will be by wise conselt and by example. In view of the uncertainties involved, it appears premature to take actions that might place an additional financial burden on our hard-pressed country. However, much can be done now that makes good economic sense and has the added benefit of limiting the growth in Australia's CO2 emissions. Natural gas emits less C02 per unit of energy when burned than either coal or oil. Furthermore, new gas-fired power stations utilise energy at considerably higher efficiency than is the case today with coal or oil. Because of much lower capital costs, there is a compelling economic case for permitting natural gas to compete freely with coal in the Australian power generation market.
