The typical management systems used to address the issue of operating risk centre around technologies that identify, analyse and evaluate the risk factors. These logical systems such as HAZOPs, Fault Tree Analyses, etc rely heavily on technical considerations and process flow analysis. However, several research projects, across industries and countries have clearly shown that up to 80 per cent `operating risk' is determined by the actions of workers, supervisors and managers. Yet, most of the focus of risk management is on technical and procedural issues. This suggests that a significant imbalance exists in our management systems and that industries are unlikely to show significant improvement on current levels of safety performance. Effective risk management must include the intangible element of the organisation psychology towards risk. A practical and theoretically sound approach had been researched and developed in and for the mining industry. This paper describes the approach and methodologies applied at the Cosmo Howley Gold Mine in the Northern Territory, where an inclusive approach to managing financial and operating risk was followed. The Cosmo Howley Mine showed a dramatic reduction in lost time injuries and improvements in financial indices - providing conclusive evidence of the link between management effectiveness, safety and productivity. This `triangle' has often been the subject of speculation and theory. It is demonstrated in this paper how the management team of Cosmo Howley focused their practices and systems on the improvement of organisational dynamics, ensured tangible and clear focus on parameters of costs and safety and how the improvement process was managed. It is concluded that the improvement process did not require a `major re-engineering' of the organisation. The organisation culture changes that occurred were incremental, planned and effective. It entailed the implementation of sound risk management methodologies, and ensured that a significant emphasis was placed on an aspect that is defined as `organisational dynamics'.

A fully instrumented and bench-mounted diamond drilling machine, purpose designed and built, has been used for investigating the effect of aqueous solutions of various chemical compounds when used as drilling fluids. The rocks investigated were andesite, basalt and granite, the chemical compounds were alkylamines, with various hydrocarbon chain lengths, aluminium chloride and dioxane. Rotation speed seems to be one of the major factors affecting the emergence of mechanochemical effects as the results obtained with aluminium chloride clearly indicate. Penetration rate is either unaf- fected or enhanced by the presence of certain compounds, such as aluminium chloride. On the other hand, penetration rate diminishes when the drilling fluid contains dioxane and exhibits an apparently unpredictable behaviour with alkylamine solutions, although it appears that an increase in hydrocarbon chain length usually equates to an increase in penetration 1. Rock texture seems to have a pronounced effect on test repeatability. With hexadecy- lamine acetate solutions in concentrations ranging from 10-5 to 5 .10-4 molò dm 3 and 41.88 radòs-1 rotation speed, 46 % increments in penetration rate of andesite were observed, with respect to water, whereas penetration rate decreased in basalt by as much as 60¦%o when a dioxane solution was used as drilling fluid. An interpretation of the observed effects is proposed in the light of current knowledge of solid state physics and physical Chemistry.

Two examples of risk assessment and risk management in action are discussed. The first is in a management context in relation to Kingsgate Consolidated LtdÆs Chatree operation in Thailand. Kingsgate has conducted an over-riding risk management program to assess and manage risk across its complete business from the Sydney and Bangkok offices through to the Chatree Mine and the companyÆs exploration group. This example addresses how Kingsgate has applied risk management, particularly to the process operation, and the benefits that have been gained. The second is in an operational context in relation to Minara Resources LtdÆs Murrin Murrin operation in Western Australia. The subject is the methodology and outcomes of a risk assessment across the Murrin Murrin operation specifically to identify and assess risks with potential impacts from $1 M to $7 M. This section of the paper then shows how the outcomes of the risk assessment were integrated into MinaraÆs strategic plan to debottleneck the plant and increase nickel production.

Cable bolts are being used more extensively by the mining industry for many different rock reinforcement applications. The configuration of these bolts has evolved over the last 20 years to meet the immediate needs of industry at the particular time. Most improvements to date have focussed on increasing the mechanical performance with little attention given to issues such as ease of handling, matching response to that of the rock mass or corrosion protection. Ultrastrand has been designed and being developed with this broad perspective in mind so that it will satisfy the ground reinforcement needs of today's and tomorrow's mining industry.Laboratory tests on Ultrastrand prototypes have confirmed that mechanical performance is superior or equivalent to Standard and Birdcage Strand respectively. Preliminary discussions have been held with an installation equipment manufacturer with a view to conducting a trial at a mine site by early-1992.

This paper presents the scientific framework underpinning the resource valuation and optimisation model (RVOM). The RVOM is a partial differential equation based real options software package, which helps mine owners optimally plan their operations, understand their project risks, and make defensible valuations. This is achieved in the presence of both financial and physical uncertainty, as well as processing capacity constraints. The RVOM can be applied to any multi-ore mine, open pit or otherwise, where the block-order of extraction has already been planned using existing software tools such as the Gemcom WhittleÖ strategic mine planning package. The RVOM can also take account of multiple commodities within a single mine, and multiple forms of price behaviour. The three key outputs from the RVOM are: valuation, optimal decision and probability of decision. A decision takes account of upfront costs, and can include an unlimited number of transitions between: normal operation, expanded operation, care and maintenance and abandonment (and variants thereof). The RVOM then employs stochastic process theory to determine the probability of reaching these decisions. This gives the mine operators clear indications as to where their risks lie, aiding their mine planning. A clear example of the RVOMs usage to a case-study gold mine is presented, demonstrating its broad applicability, the added value it can create and how users can easily make use of the RVOMÆs state-of-the-art algorithmic engine.

Comparison of the Zadra, Anglo-American and organic solvent procedures for desorption of gold from activated carbon loaded in carbon-in-pulp gold circuits indicates that the Anglo American and the organic solvent procedures are considerably more effective than the commonly used Zadra procedure. Organic solvent elution procedures, particularly those using acetonitrile and acetone, can provide effective gold elution and very high concentrations of gold in eluate solutions. The operational simplicity and effectiveness of the Anglo American procedure would appear to make it the most satisfactory procedure available at the present time but this may change as the solvent elution procedures become better developed. INTRODUCTION The carbon-in-pulp technique has been introduced into the gold processing industry to by-pass the often lengthy CCD and filtration steps required in the conventional Merrill Crowe cyanidation procedure for gold recovery. Adsorption of gold on to carbon is also a valuable technique for recovering trace amounts of gold from low level waste streams from conventional processing procedures.

The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) and Rock Mass Strength (RMS) classification systems for jointed rock masses are briefly reviewed, with particular reference to their use in slope stability studies. A correlation is provided between the results obtained from the two classifications and an equation is presented tentatively defining the RMR value for long-term stable slope angles. The validity of the equation is discussed in general terms in the context of slope stability problems commonly encountered in Western Australian open pit gold mines.

Located approximately 570km NNW of Adelaide in South Australia, the Olympic Dam mine (OD) is the world’s fourth largest remaining copper and gold resource and the largest uranium resource. Discovered in 1975 and going into production in 1988, the operation consists of a fully vertically integrated underground mine, mineral processing plant, copper smelter and refinery, as well as associated infrastructure. BHP achieved production of 203,000 tonnes of copper cathode plus associated by-products in financial year 2016. The immense size and high-grades of the Olympic Dam resource offer a range of growth pathways, making closure timing estimation and planning a challenge. Current estimates put the OD resource at approximately 79 million tonnes of copper. Major factors influencing the closure timing estimation, as a result of the large resource and grade tonnage profile, include the mining method that may be used and the downstream processing method, ultimately influencing such things as the total disturbance area and the extent of infrastructure to be demolished at the end of mine life. In addition, factors such as the mining and processing method and production rate have a direct impact on larger rehabilitation items such as the total number of tailings cells required.CITATION:Grant, D, Tyler, M and Hill, G, 2018. This study presents the procedure of mine modelling and reserve evaluation by means of statistics, computer interpolation methods and aerophotography interpretation. All data are from Carbonifera Treviso, Laura Muller City, Santa Catarina State, southernmost Brazil. From 22 bore holes and nine trenches opened in the coal seam outcrops, a data base including level references and thickness of all rock formations was created.Using this information, basic statistic analysis was carried out, showing that there are three different populations (three modal distribution). These populations defined three geological blocks with different characteristics of overburden removal and mining methodology. This mathematical approach for analysing geological data is very important for correct mine planning and complementary prospection.

Underground mining in the West Moreton coal field started in the 1870's. Subsidence related to coal mining activities is an ongoing problem facing planners and developers in the Ipswich area in South Eastern Queensland. The history of coal mining in the area over the last 110 years has left the legacy of periodic surface instability in several areas. In general, modern engineering analysis with current mining methods combine to create predicatable analysis of surface stability and movement. Where old workings using several variations of the bord and pillar system are affected by current activity, the predictibility of the surface movement is greatly reduced. Geological complexities further complicate the analysis. Mining and the related dewatering affects the stresses on pillars in old workings. This is caused by reducing buoyancy effects caused by changes in the water levels in old workings. Of particular relevance is the depth of workings and strength of the coal and overburden. The type of subsidence affecting the surface can range from localised pillar failure, to roof failure and potholing and the likelihood of the particular form of subsidence can be assessed from studying the workings in relation to the stratigraphy and structure of the coal measure Formations.

In the first half of 1987 two four metre diameter raise bore holes were drilled at the Olympic Dam Project for ventilation purposes. The first hole, 476 m x 4.0 m diameter was completed in 96 days, 35 days longer than scheduled. The second hole, 407 m x 4.0 m diameter was completed in 39 days, 2 days ahead of schedule. Both holes were drilled with a Robbins 121R rig using a Wirth head that consisted of 23 face cutters and 5 side cutters, supplied by a contractor. After the sites were located a grouting program was carried out to help seal off an aquifer between 160 and 180 m below the surface. Cavities discovered in the Andamooka Limestone were filled with concrete. Because of the overlying dune sands and clay both sites were pre-sunk to the competent Andamooka Limestone.

Semi-bulk concentrates of 45% zinc at 80% recovery have been produced from the McArthur River mineral deposit. Selective leaching of these concentrates to recover lead and a commercial grade zinc concentrate has the potential to increase significantly the recovery of zinc (as zinc concentrate) and lead (as lead metal) over conventional flotation methods producing lead and zinc concentrates.

Revised throughput rates, as a result of current mining methods and tight controls on mine dilution, have dictated a change in metallurgical philosophy at Renison Limited. Emphasis on throughput capacity increases has altered to a reduction in circuit complexity and operating costs. Extensive surveys of the gravity and cassiterite flotation circuits led to several plant modifications between August 1989 and March 1990. The coarse and fine gravity retreatment roughing tables were by-passed, the coarse gravity retreatment roughing tables were re-commissioned, the cassiterite flotation rougher capacity expanded and the gravity regrind cyclones re-configured.

Production sharing and cost apportionment in joint ventures is commonplace in Australasia today and elsewhere. It is a recognised convention that, with the exception of a free carry situation, joint venture participants usually share the proceeds of the joint venture in direct proportion to their respective participating interest, after having first paid its respective cash calls, in advance, to cover the projectÆs ongoing operating and capital cost requirements.In surface mines, the parties simply pay their way and take their proceeds in this manner. In underground mines, the situation is no different, though treatment of capital, depreciation and tax may differ between the parties. A common feature in many cases is the creation of a joint venture entity to conduct the business. This entity then collects cash from the parties, banks it, employs the staff, runs the operation, provides reports and pays out the proceeds. This convention appears to be relatively simple in application. In practice, it has been known to be complicated in the situation where the participants take their product at the mine gate and undertake their own marketing and selling arrangements. A more complex situation presents itself where the joint venture tenement boundary with an unrelated third party straddles an economic deposit. In this scenario, both the joint venture parties and the third party may wish to mine the deposit, sharing some infrastructure and costs, yet taking their own product as it is produced. A case study outlining such a situation is presented in the paper, outlining firstly how the major cost categories were identified and treated for cost apportionment purposes. Secondly, a mechanism for the equitable apportionment of product is suggested. Finally, issues such as timing and cost reporting are dealt with, together with a checklist of points which should be considered when a similar situation might arise in the future.

Pressure leach liquors from the pressure oxidation of a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from a complex Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide ore were treated to remove iron, either by pressure oxidation (the Hematite process) or with particles of magnetite (the Magnetite process), followed by cementation of various metals with zinc dust to obtain a purified solution from which zinc was electrowon. Satisfactory iron removal was achieved by both processes after neutralisation to pH 4.5 or 5.5. Pressure oxidation of the liquor at 200¦C and 690 kPa oxygen overpressure, conditions similar to those of the Hematite process used in the zinc industry, resulted in the precipitation of the iron as hematite. With the Magnetite process, an iron hydroxide was precipitated onto magnetite at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature and removed by a magnetic separation step. The performances of both these processes for the removal of iron are compared. It is concluded that the Magnetite process offers considerable cost savings. Other impurities, in particular arsenic, were also removed with the iron in both processes. Cementation at pH 5.2 and 85-90 ¦C with 3.5 g/L zinc dust reduced the levels of copper, cadmium, and nickel to a satisfactory level and subsequent electrolysis in a laboratory cell gave an acceptable deposit of zinc.

Over the past 12 years screening of materials has undergone a dramatic change in both the types and materials used in screen mats and the quality requirements of the finished product. With the main thrust now on quality and a cleaner product a different approach was needed in the operation of sizing screens. New screen mats with many different aperture configurations have been developed using rubber and plastics.to replace the traditional screen mat of woven wire or punched plate.

Mount Isa Mines Limited commissioned the Heavy Medium Plant in August 1982. The first processing stage using Mogensen Sizer 2056 dry screens, experienced unresolvable cloth blinding problems in attempting to separate fine, damp Lead/Zinc ore at 1.7 mm. A large proportion of the fines incorrectly reported to oversize and hence to the wet preparation screens. This wet preparation screen overloading produced multiple operating and maintenance problems. The plant configuration precluded retrofitting any alternative proprietary screen. An internal Mount Isa Mines research and development programme was established to design and build a screen to achieve the required per- formance within the site constraints. The resulting ISA SIZER screen has exceeded metallurgical performance expectations. A `clean sheet' approach to the design also permitted elimination of maintenance difficulties experienced with the Mogensen Sizer. Four `production model' ISA SIZERS were installed in February 1988. The ISA SIZER screen, now fully developed is available commercially and will satisfy many screening plant requirements.

The granulation behavior of specularite fines which possess poor ballability was studied with limonite fines as a function of nuclei particles and adhering fines. The results show that the permeability of granules deteriorated as the ratio of specularite fines increased in the mixture, and the optimal granulation moisture content also decreased. The granulation kinetics results demonstrate that the adhering load of specularite fines increases rapidly within three minutes and then levels off. With increasing specularite fines ratio, the adhering speed is accelerated but the granulation duration needs to be longer to reach adhering balance. The microstructure of granule quasi-particles indicates that the fine limonite particles act as binders to bond together the specularite particles which are dispersed in the adhering layers. This can improve the adhering strength of the granules. Hence, the granulation behaviour of specularite fines can be improved by blending them with fine limonite ores which have high adhering capabilities.CITATION:Zhu, D-Q, Li, X-B, Pan, J and Shi, B-J, 2015. In recent years, ultrasonic comminution technology has been developed at the Utah Comminution Center. An ultrasonic grinding device was assembled and investigated. An ultrasonic transducer system has been significantly improved by using a special type of piezoelectric ceramic and preloading to 4.1 x le kPa to obtain maximum strength. The improved system provides constant and rapid vibratory promotion of fatigue fracture resulting in more effective breakage. The design principles for an ultrasonic mill are developed in this paper. Size reduction was successfully achieved in the ultrasonic nip-roll device for a variety of materials. Ultrasonic comminution has repeatedly demonstrated the capability of producing fine particles from a variety of materials. A comparison between ultrasonic grinding and dry ball milling of limestone showed that the ultrasonic device produced much narrower size distributions than the ball mill. This trend is especially obvious in the coarse size range where few particles remain, and in the fine size range where overgrinding is prevented. This behavior might have some interesting applications in areas other than mineral processing like powder metallurgy or material science where narrow and controlled product sizes are required for the successful elaboration of high-technology ceramics and glasses. Ultrasonic comminution has a significant advantage in the accurate control of the product size.

The light microscopic study of the physical structures of coal and associated mineral matter is an important technique in providing information on the characterisitics and possible behaviour of coals in industrial processes. However the ultrafine nature of coal and mineral particles together with the limits of resolution of the light microscope restrict such studies. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)with its better resolution and higher magnifications is the means by which further information on coal properties can be obtained. An associated energy dispersive X-ray specrometry (EDS) method allows non-destructive in-situ chemical analyses to be carried out at the same time.
