"This paper details the many improvements possible in narrow vein mining from the use of treated mining/milling waste as mine fill. Such fill can be: treated mill tailing, cemented or uncemented; development muck, treated or untreated, cemented or uncemented; andsome combination of these materials, or surface sands/gravels. Treatments involved may be both physical (optimisation of particle size gradings) and chemical (neutralision of potentially harmful milling chemicals).Potential benefits include a reduction in: back stress; vein closure; alternate ground support requirements; mining dilution; potential for surface subsidence; and extent of surface disposal of mining/milling waste, resulting in reduced environmental impact. Considering the usually small production tonnages involved, preparation and placement of a highly applicable fill material can be economically accommodated.Emphasis is placed on steeply dipping orebodies being mined overhand, although practice in the much less steeply dipping RSA gold/platinum-type orebody is also considered.CITATION:Thomas, E G, 2012. From the viewpoint of mechanical efficiency, charges should be fully coupled and, upon detonation, should just fail to break the rock in compression. But because mining thrives on its cost-effectiveness rather than its mechan- ical efficiency, the explosive which generates maximum energy per $ should generally be used, even though the mechanical efficiency of this explosive's detonation products may be sub- optimum. Wherever possible, each charge should have a length:diameter ratio of about 20 or more and should shoot to a concavely biplanar free face that is both parallel and reasonably close to the blasthole. Success in obtaining parallel effective faces often demands the drilling of angled blastholes and, hence, will require intensified research and development efforts by drilling manufacturers, especially where hard strong rocks are encountered. Blastholes should be drilled on equilateral triangular grids and fired in a Vl or shallower V-type sequence using inter-row delays which ensure that good pro- gressive relief of burden is achieved. The conventional method of calculating Se/Be values (on the basis of planar effective faces) is often invalid.

A reconstructed landscape may exert long-term influences on its surrounds and behave in ways that may not be predictable given uncertainties regarding climate, soil and vegetation interactions (Evans, 2000). In recent years, computer-based landscape evolution models (LEM) have been used to assess potential and existing mining landscapes and their long-term geomorphic behaviour (Hancock et al, 2007; Hancock, Lowry and Coulthard, 2015; Tucker and Hancock, 2010).In this paper, we focus on the evolution of post-mining landforms, which are designed to include burial or encapsulation of mine-impacted areas and materials, including tailings, drains, spoil tips and other industrial architecture (Figure 1). At the Ranger Uranium mine in the Northern Territory of Australia, low-grade uranium ore, tailings, brines and other mine wastes will be buried at depth in the areas of the former pits and tailings storage facilities.The use of LEMs to predict long-term landscape evolution has several issues. These include that model predictions are based on the calibration and parameterisation of the model carried out using values determined from present day, or recent surface conditions. Furthermore, there is also the question as to how subtle perturbations or roughness on the DEM surface can produce alternative model results by randomly varying the elevations of the DEM surface.In this study we examine the effect on sediment transport rates and geomorphology for a proposed rehabilitated landform using multiple landscape realisations with increasing magnitudes of random changes in the DEM using the SIBERIA LEM (Willgoose, Bras and Rodriguez-Iturbe, 1991).CITATION:Hancock, G R, Coulthard, T J and Lowry, J B C, 2016. "The Braemar Iron Formation is atypical ore when compared to the current magnetite ores being processed. In attempting to process and economically recover the vast quantities of iron ore stored within the Braemar Iron Formation, æshifting the paradigmÆ is required. The formation has a low Davis tube recovery (DTR) grade of 15 - 20 per cent, which is much lower than magnetite ores processed in Australia. Despite this, by thoroughly testing and understanding the ore characteristics, it is found that the Braemar ores have significant advantages to processing than the harder banded iron formation (BIF) and taconite resources.The Hawsons magnetite iron ore resource has been known from the early 1960s when CRA explored the area. The grade was low and the Pilbara region discovery lead to the development of high-grade direct shipping hematite ores. Carpentaria Exploration (CAP) rediscovered the magnetite whilst undertaking multi-commodity exploration in the Broken Hill district during 2009. Shifting the paradigm away from grade the advantages of processing this ore are achieved by having an extremely low waste to ore ratio, lower Bond work index, lower abrasion levels and high-grade magnetite concentrates with little impurities other than silica. While developing the Hawsons Iron Project (HIP) it became more apparent that a positive business case is achievable when the following factors are exploited: very large resource - the resource is contained within one pit the rock fractures easily along grain boundaries - ideal for cheap impact crushing of the ore the ore is extremely soft, with a Bond work index of 6.3 - 8.0 kWh/t all major infrastructure required is readily available - rail, power, access and port the mine is in close proximity to Broken Hill - rich mining history and skill set available the resource contains many billions of tonnes of magnetite mineralisation.Shifting the paradigm by selecting equipment suitable for processing soft ores and not hard BIF or taconite ores and taking locality and available infrastructure into account may change the way people approach new low-grade resources in future.CITATION:Koenig, R L and Broekman, K T, 2013. The Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada has emerged as a major new province for diamond mineralisation in less than three years. This is primarily the product of a diligent search in the form of a scientifically based exploration effort. However other factors, including positive aspects of the business and the legal environment have also been identified as assisting the exploration process. In my view these have increased the likelihood of diamond mining becoming a major new industry for Canada. The supportive role of various government agencies has been important. In addition, the character of many of the joint venture deals that have been done has provided an attractive setting for the capital intensive evaluation and development work that is now required to bring the diamond discoveries into production. Perhaps of equal importance is that with the recognition that is being given to the success of the NWT diamond ventures, Canadian explorers are continuing to attract new risk capital for further exploration. This paper attempts to model and quantify the probability of exploration success translating into successful mine development.

Copper was first produced in Australia in 1844, at the Kapunda Mine in South Australia, and, by 18i>0, production exceeded 2,000 tons of copper a year. Output increased ,steadily, reaching a peak of 14,00Qo tons a year in 1867 and 1868, when the Burra Burra and Kapunda Mines in South Australia and the Peak Downs Moine at Clermont, Queensland, were at the height of their production. At this period, Australian copper formed a considerable percentage of the world's supply, its output equalling, for a short time, that of the United States. Production declined to between 3,000 and 4,000 tons a year after the closing of' these three mines between 18717 and 1879, and, at this stage, the Australian output came chiefly from the Wallatoo and Moonta mines in South Australia. About 19000, it began to rise again, with the extension of the railway to the copper fields of Chillagoe and Cloncurry, and, between 1905 and 1912, was at its greatest, with a maximum of 47,774 tons of copper in 1912. During this period, Australia contributed 4,7 per cent. of the world's annual production, and ranked among the six major copper-producing countries of the world (Table 1).

The overall systems approach to blast furnace aerodynamics is explored including the time and spatial inter-relationships that exist between the furnace lines, tuyeres, burden characteristics, distributor capabilities and furnace operating practice. Attention is called to the time dependent, three dimensional aspects of blast furnace aerodynamics and to the existence of several zones within a furnace where the flow characteristics are different. Changes in furnace operating practice to take further advantage of fully beneficiated burdens including formed coke are discussed from a practical viewpoint. Lessons learned in a variety of shaft furnaces used for other purposes are discussed insofar as they have a bearing on aerodynamics in an iron blast furnace. Questions are raised about the penetration of hot blast in large furnaces. Operating practices and.proposed solutions are evaluated where tuyeres over iron and slag notches are restricted or plugged. Opportunities are presented for using on-line hierarchical computer systems with adaptive tuning algorithms to provide non-linear control of changing process conditions in real time. This will make it possible for the blast furnace operator to optimise a variety of interrelated paramaters, each with different response times. Potential increases in productivity, fuel savings and improved quality control are believed to be within reach.

A combination of new radiometric age dates, local field relationships and the regional tectonic history indicate that the low sulphidation, fault breccia-hosted, epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Umuna is related to continental rifting processes rather than subduction induced deformation and magmatism. K-Ar and Ar-Ar age dating of secondary sericite associated with the gold-silver mineralisation indicates that the alteration crystallised between 4.0 and 3.2 Ma, whereas relative age relationships and SHRIMP II U-Pb dating of the abundant Boiou porphyry intrusions on Misima confirm that the calc-alkaline plutonism is significantly older (8.1 f 0.4 Ma) and related to a different tectonothermal event. The Woodlark Basin sea floor spreading centre occurs to the north of Misima and has continued to propagate westwards, into the continental basement of the Papuan Peninsular, since the end of the Miocene. The westernmost tip of sea floor spreading centre is presently to the east of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands but would have been to the east of Misima roughly 4 Ma. Many of the young tectonothermal features in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands (hydrothermal activity and associated epithermal mineralisation, metamorphic core complex exhumation, detachment faulting, peralkaline volcanism, half graben type basin formation) can be attributed to major extensional deformation ahead of the propagating rift system. Similar tectonothermal features on Misima are temporally associated with the epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Umuna, suggesting that the D'Entrecasteaux Islands are a modern day tectonic analogue for Misima at the time of precious metal mobility and deposition. Background BHP Iron Ore Pty Ltd is one of the major iron ore producers in the Pilbara Region of North Western Australia. The company manages three separate joint ventures; the Newman, Goldsworthy and Yandi joint ventures and two 100 per cent owned operations, Yampi and Jimblebar. The Newman operations constitute a mine site at Newman and a 426 km railroad to Port Hedland where there is an ore processing/port site. The Goldsworthy operations currently constitute a mine site at Shay Gap/Nimingarra, a developing mine site at Yarrie, a decommissioned mine site at Goldsworthy and an ore processing/port site at Finucane Island (Port Hedland). The Yandi operations include mining and processing facilities at site and a spur line to join the Newman Hedland railroad. Jimblebar operations are scree and bedrock mining near Newman and include mining, processing and a spur line to Newman where it joins the Newman-Hedland railroad. The Yampi operations constitute a mine/port site at Koolan Island (which is presently being decommissioned). The combined BHP Iron Ore operations produce approximately 46 Mtpa of iron ore. This paper will concentrate on the processes developed and applied for the decommissioning of the Goldsworthy site. The Goldsworthy site is on the northern boundary of the Pilbara Region and adjacent to the western extremity of the Great Sandy Desert. It is located approximately 110 km east of Port Hedland (see Figure 1). The area is generally of low relief with isolated low ranges. The mine site being within the Mount Goldsworthy range area. The geology of the area is essentially Archaean granite with Archaean banded iron formation becoming dominant within the ranges. The chief soils are hard alkaline red soils. The vegetation is essentially shrub steppe with the main hummock grass species being spinifex (Triodia sp). The climate for the region is semi arid tropical. The temperature ranges from a mean low of 15¦C in winter to a mean high of 40¦ in summer. Rainfall is episodic, occurring mainly throughout the summer as a result of tropical depressions or cyclonic activity. The average annual rainfall is approximately 300 mm and annual evaporation may exceed rainfall by up to 2500 mm. Goldsworthy Mining Ltd commissioned the Goldsworthy site in 1965/66. Goldsworthy was the first iron ore operation and associated town site in the Pilbara region. The mine development peaked in 1977 with the town population reaching 1400 people. In 1982 mining ceased and the mining operations were relocated to Shay Gap, 80 km east of Goldsworthy. The Goldsworthy town continued as the base for the railing operations between Finucane Island and Shay Gap. BHP Minerals acquired Goldsworthy Mining Limited in 1990. The population for the town of Goldsworthy at this stage was around 450 people. Bakelite is fairly widely known as a suitable material for the mounting of ore specimens, concentrates and tailings for microscopical study, but has not as yet had extensive application. It is the most suitable mount for specimens which are to be held in the mechanical holder of a polishing machine, based on that described by J. W. Vanderbilt*, which is installed in the Geological Department of the Melbourne University.Bakelite products are prepared by subjecting bakelite powder to a temperature of about 1600 C. under a pressure of approximately two tons per square inch for a period of four minutes. The shape and size of the products are governed by the use of suitably constructed dies. When the concentrate or tailing is mixed with the bakelite powder, a briquette is produced which can be polished so that the opaque minerals in the sample can be examined microscopically in the same way as in a piece of solid ore. The Kyaukpahto gold deposit is located at latitude 23¦ 47Æ 55" N and longitude 95¦ 56Æ 35" E in the Kawlin-Wuntho district, Sagaing Division, Myanmar. Gold mineralisation is hosted in sandstone of the Male Formation (Eocene) and occurs as stockworks and disseminations. The high-grade gold mineralisation is locally concentrated in a breccia zone. The gold deposit is closely associated with a NNE-SSW trending fracture system that forms tensional open fractures. These tensional zones are thought to be directly related to the Sagiang transfer fault system that experienced several hundred kilometres of northward dextral movement during the post-Upper Miocene. Major sulfide minerals are pyrite and arsenopyrite with minor galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Gold mineralisation is associated with intense silicification, sericitisation and argillic alteration. Primary Type I fluid inclusions in the quartz from the mineralised zone are 5 to 15 ¦m across and yield homogenisation temperatures of 239¦ - 310¦C and salinities of 1.2 - 10.9 wt per cent NaCl equivalent. Laser Raman spectroscopic analysis indicates the presence of CO2 and CH4 in Type II fluid inclusions. Sulfur isotope analysis of disseminated pyrite in the ore zone by the laser ablation method indicates d34S values from -5.48ë to +5.53ë. The geology, alteration, ore mineralogy, fluid inclusion microthermometry and sulfur isotope data of the Kyaukpahto deposit are consistent with an epithermal ore deposit model for the deposit. However, the presence of CO2-liquid bearing fluids and the detectable CH4 in the gaseous phase of the fluid inclusions conflict with a typical epithermal origin for the Kyaukpahto deposit. The host siltstone and mudstone sequence, trace element geochemistry, and the disseminated nature of sulfide and gold mineralisation are also common characteristics of a sedimentary rock-hosted gold deposit, and these features may indicate a Carlin-like affinity. Selection of mining methods, stope dimensions and stoping sequences is usually based on comparisons with other similar orebodies or rocktypes. Rock mechanics principles assist the process, which can be further improved by application of rock mechanics' models - in particular, computer based stress analysis techniques. These models vary in capabilities and potential application but, basically, can be subdivided into techniques which only model the surface of excavations, and those which model the total volume to be analysed. To address the wide range of geometries, stoping methods and sequences, and geomechanical environments at Mount Isa Mines, a number of models have been developed. By presenting examples of their actual and potential application it is demonstrated that appropriate use of these techniques will assist in the determination of mining parameters and improve ore recovery. Examples presented cover sequencing in tabular and massive orebodies, location of shafts and shaft pillars, and backfill and hanging-wall stability. It is concluded that surface techniques are more appropriate for regional analyses and volume techniques are more suited to analyses of detailed, local geometry. The mining industry often needs to operate in remote or climatically harsh locations. The industry has recently been forced to deal with extreme conditions including floods, heatwaves and droughts. As these are becoming progressively frequent occurrences, mines typically build ‘downtime’ into production schedules and expect to incur costs to manage the various risks arising from climate extremes. Importantly, many environmental conditions are becoming more extreme and consequently, risk management based on past data can become increasingly ineffective. Market and shareholder demand for fewer interruptions are another pressure on mines to avoid prolonged or frequent downtime. Hence, adaptation to climate is becoming an important strategic move for many companies, many of whom are using future climate scenarios and alternative risk evaluations.We present here a method that uses commonly available mine site data to assist decision-making for reducing vulnerability to sudden flood. The method, ‘climate-related adaptation from terrain evaluation results’ (CRATER), identifies a mine’s flood ‘hot-spots’ and presents them as a ‘traffic lights’ warning map. The process then requires a failure analysis process such as fault-tree analysis to identify both the cause of possible failures and a range of possible failure-avoidance adaptations. In the final stage, management can assess the most suitable option for the mine, based on the availability of capital such as time, facilities, labour and money in addition to social acceptability of the options. CRATER has been tested in an open cut mine environment and is now being further developed to identify how subsidence over underground mines may impact on flooding and ponding over the mining life cycle (CRATER II). The East wall of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston Open Pit (KCGM Superpit) has a history of wall instabilities impacting mining operations; the most significant of which occurred in May 2018, when more than 1 Mt of rock dislodged over six, 30 m high bench stacks and impacted the pit floor. Since 2011 approximately 1.250 Mt of material has fallen from the East wall at Fimiston Pit across three failure events (2011, 2018 and 2020). Each failure has been associated with major structures intersecting the pit walls: the Fiji Fault, the Australia East Secondary Splay Fault and the EWD3 Fault. In each instance the trigger for failure has been transient pore pressure in the pit walls. Northern Star will mine a cut back behind the failure area over a vertical distance of 180 m. Cut back mining will include the extraction of a remaining in situ wedge, which is assessed as kinematically able to fail, and a subvertical failure backscarp in Stage 1. A substantial amount of rill material from the 2018 and 2020 failures will be extracted in Stage 2. This paper presents the methodology in use to mine Stage 1 of the cut back, safely, through this potentially high-risk area, detailing the specific mining methodology employed, the controls put in place and the monitoring required. Day-to-day monitoring will be undertaken using the already installed slope stability radar and will feed into a daily assessment of activities which may be undertaken in the cut back area. Initial activities will focus on eliminating the potentially unstable wedge and vertical backscarp with use of innovative drill and blast techniques/products and the extensive use of remote capable equipment to limit personnel exposure.

The Fortescue Metals Group story began in 2003 with a vision to establish an infrastructure project that would connect the stranded iron ore deposits of the Pilbara region of Western Australia with the steel mills of Asia. Following exploration successes in the Chichester Ranges using their new exploration model, Fortescue established significant iron ore resources at Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek during 2004 and 2005. By May 2006 the definitive feasibility study for mine, rail and port was completed, many of the key government approvals had been obtained, product development and market acceptance were complete and 1.07 Bt of total proved plus probable iron ore reserves were defined to support a 20 year mine life from the Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek deposits. Project construction commenced in September 2006 following a successful $3.2 billion capital raising. By April 2008, the mine and processing plant at Cloudbreak were completed along with the Herb Elliott port facility at Port Hedland and 256 km of heavy haul railroad linking the mine with the port. Mining of overburden commenced at Cloudbreak in late 2007 and by 15 May 2008 the first shipment of iron ore had departed for China. In the first 12 months of operation total shipments amounted to 24.6 M wet metric tonnes with weighted mean composition of 58.9 per cent Fe (64.4 per cent Fe calcined), 4.3 per cent SiO2, 2.0 per cent Al2O3 and 0.047 per cent P. Exactly 3.5 years between the Cloudbreak discovery hole and commercial production. The project success depended on many technical breakthroughs including a new exploration model, application of the surface miner as the main mining production unit, design of a new marketable fines product called æRocket FinesÆ, a highly efficient ædesandÆ flow sheet for upgrading of 2.4 per cent alumina run-of-mine to 1.9 per cent alumina Rocket Fines, 40 t axle loads for the heavy haul railway and a high capacity-highly automated port facility.

Blast exclusion zones are instrumental in protecting equipment and personnel. When there is no constraint in footprint, the exclusion zone can be enormous, practically eliminating the hazard of flyrock. Unfortunately, this may not always be the case and in many circumstances the blast design needs to be altered to suite such scenarios. When a conservative design approach is taken, it could completely eliminate any form of ejection, whether it is from the free face or the bench itself. The degree to which typical flyrock models describe fragment motion through air with ballistic flight equations are not justified when such a high level of control is applied. In 2015, Ernst and Young (EY) ranked socio-political license to operate (SPLTO) as the fifth greatest challenge to the mining sector (EY, 2015). The EY report asserts that SPLTO will continue to present a risk to the mining sector in the context of ‘increased activism, digitally connected stakeholders and politicians who need to respond to general consensus’. While there is no consensus on a definition, SPLTO is commonly regarded as the ongoing acceptance or approval of an operation by affected stakeholders (Moffat and Zhang, 2014; Thomson and Joyce, 2008) as well as those stakeholders that can affect the operation (Graafland, 2002). Warhurst (2001) relates the process of stakeholders granting SPLTO to the establishment of meaningful partnerships between operations, communities and government based on a variety of factors that build trust between stakeholders.From these accounts, we can see that understanding stakeholder attitudes about company performance and impacts on stakeholders directly affected by an operation are important in any attempts to measure SPLTO. Understanding the level of acceptance of an operation within these stakeholders provides a good proxy or outcome measure of SPLTO. Moreover, trust seems to be a central variable in the translation of these experiences of an operation into acceptance. What the mine or company does, its behaviour, degrades or builds trust with stakeholders, and this then affects acceptance (Moffat and Zhang, 2014).In addition, a strong emphasis is placed on the nature of the relationship between companies and stakeholders as influenced by inter-group interactions. It is not just what companies do well or poorly with respect to environmental impacts, for example, that will determine trust and acceptance, but how the company relates to its stakeholders at personal and group levels.These relationships between communities of stakeholders and extractive companies are dynamic. Brown and Fraser (2006) recognised the importance of industry being able to respond to the changing nature of societal approval and acceptance, arguing that ‘business must have regard for evolving social attitudes and expectations if it is to maintain its ‘social licence’’.This paper will describe a series of five pilot projects conducted by CSIRO with Anglo American in Australia and South Africa to generate a real-time understanding of SPLTO to guide more reflexive and effective social performance strategies.CITATION:Moffat, K, Boughen, N, Brooks, L and Zhang, A, 2016. A survey was undertaken on the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter in which samples of slag and matte were taken along the length of the integrated flash smelting furnace and analysed to determine the variation of nickel and iron concentration. At the same time the oxygen potential of the slag and matte was measured using disposable tip solid-state oxygen probes. The results show that the oxygen potential of the slag is higher than that of the matte and that both decrease from the reaction shaft end to the slag tap hole end of the furnace. The slag and matte are not at equilibrium except towards the tap hole end. Reduction of nickel and magnetite from the slag occurs before the slag enters the slag-cleaning appendage by reaction with iron in the matte. Thermodynamic modelling and laboratory experiments showed that the equilibrium nickel and magnetite contents of the slag in the absence of a carbonaceous reducing agent are about 0.4 per cent and 7.5 per cent, respectively. A carbonaceous reductant is required to obtain a lower nickel content in the slag.

The Woodlawn base metal sulphide deposit, located 50km S of Goulbum, New South Wales, was mined as an open pit operation for 10 years from 1977, producing 8 million tonnes of ore. Underground development began in 1985 and reached full production of 500,000t/yr as open pit mining ceased in mid 1987. Underground development highlighted the extensive deformation and intense alteration associated with the deposit and the host rocks.The deposit occurs above an acid volcanic pile in a sequence of interbedded and interfingering shales, cherts, volcanogenic sediments and pyroclastics of mid to late Silurian age intruded by dolerite sills.
