Natural phenomena and human engineering construction activities had great influence on the geosciences space. Natural disasters, particularly mine disaster and other geological disasters happened frequently, which brought great losses both in people’s lives and economics, therefore, to explore the essential causes and mechanisms of disaster by some useful approaches is the most important step in mine disaster prevention. In a variety of methods, building an aground-underground seamlessly integrated model, and then analysing the formation and development mechanism of mining disaster based on this model is a useful way. In this paper, we studied an aground-underground seamlessly Integrated modelling method, and correspondingly given an aground-underground seamlessly integrated 3D spatial model, CSG+CD-TIN+GTP-TTS, by which we can carry out analysis of surface subsidence and underground laneway distortion efficiently, finally preliminary applications verified the effectiveness of this method.

Kriged estimates are not typically calculated on blocks substantially smaller than the sample spacing (eg the Standard Mining Unit or SMU). Moreover, the sample spacing for quality variables is often much greater than the SMU size. For short to medium term planning decisions, the shorter term variability in the quality variables is a key economic consideration in defining, setting and meeting coal product specifications.Global uncertainties can be calculated using Drill Hole Spacing Analyses (DHSA). However, knowing the precision of a variable for a one or two year production volume is usually not adequate for variables with low spatial continuity that may fluctuate significantly over daily, weekly, SMU, or shipment volumes.Is there a feasible, reasonable and valid geostatistical method to model the uncertainty of coal quality variables on blocks substantially smaller than the drill spacing (say on the SMU)?The validity of using co-kriging variances, calculated on SMUs to characterise local uncertainty, was tested using a suite of conditional simulations generated for several quality variables for BHP’s Blackwater operation. The conditional simulation results were used as a benchmark against which the results derived from the kriging variances could be compared.The agreement between the kriging and simulation methods for thickness is excellent, with much closer correlations than for the quality variables. Typically, the kriging variances give very reasonable approximations to the simulation-based uncertainties, although there could be some systematic discrepancies which may become much more critical if a classification is to be based on a thresholding of the SMUs relative uncertainties.CITATION:Mawdesley, C, Barry, D, Bertoli, O and Saha, R, 2017. The flotability of monazite, zircon and rutile in the presence of sodium oleate, potassium octyl hydroxamate and a commercial hydroxamate was investigated through microflotation tests in a modified Hallimond tube. Zeta potential determinations in the absence/presence of collectors were performed in a microelectrophoretical cell. The microflotation testwork showed that, in general, the flotability characteristics of all three minerals are very similar. Commercial hydroxamate is, by far, a stronger collector than the pure potassium octyl hydroxamate. Electrokinetic studies indicated that the adsorption of collectors shifts the isoelectric point (IEP) of the minerals towards lower pH values. These collectors also are capable of changing the zeta potential values to more negative figures in the pH region above the isoelectric point. An increase of the conditioning temperature, generally, enhances the floatability of the three minerals. A depressant is required in order that selective flotation is feasible in the system monazite-zircon-ruffle. Sodium metasilicate is an efficient depressant for zircon and rutile and affects only slightly the flotability of Monazite.

In the mid-1990s, after a long period of antipathy between the company and its detractors, Rio Tinto embarked upon an ambitious cultural change program that sought to transform the fundamental basis of its relationship with global, national and local stakeholders. This has evolved into a broader pursuit of positive cultural change within Rio Tinto as part of the mining industryÆs Sustainable Development initiative. Initially driven from the top down, the communities component of this program comprises an architecture of policies, value statements, social research and verification systems. The commitment to better community relationships is best exemplified in Australia by the scope and scale of the GroupÆs Aboriginal land access agreements, community development programs and the work of the Rio Tinto Aboriginal Foundation. While collectively these form the core elements of an evolving set of internal social competencies, development of second-tier competencies is required to organically embed a culture of sustainable relationships with local and regional communities. Second-tier competencies will include appreciation of social dynamics, social science and diversity at middle management level; rigorous social research that properly informs development options for companies and host communities; career paths and recognition within the mining industry for young professionals both generally and from stakeholder communities; proper community-needs assessments, research into such things as purchasing power and other economics data, and inventories of public goods such as land-carrying capacity and water availability. Without this information it is difficult to gain an appreciation of and to alert people to the consequences of change brought on by a mine. The next decade will see second-tier social competencies promoted within successful mining companies. Measures to achieve this include a range of Human Resource (HR) incentives such as recruitment and career advancement based on broad competencies rather than narrow technical proficiency, humanities training for mining professionals and performance rewards that recognise social competence. A sustainable future for mining in a globally connected social landscape requires selection of people who can listen, relate and act in an open social system. The challenge for the mining industry, its professional organisations and educational institutions is to acknowledge this and develop these new aspects of mining industry professionalism. This cannot be left to individual companies if the industry is to have a sustainable future.

In the eastern high-strain domain of the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, Brazil, hard and soft high-grade hematite ore may occur as schistose bodies in shear zones mainly related to the Cambotas-Fundpo thrust system. These orebodies are almost entirely constituted of oriented specularite platelets that develop both as a product of crystal-plastic deformation of hematite and solution-precipitation processes. Both mechanisms interact in the partitioning of the strain, while solution-precipitation is responsible for the precipitation of hematite and localised leaching of silica resulting in the formation of syntectonic ores. The analyses of fluid inclusions from specularite crystals of the Conceitpo and Timbopeba deposits, located in the northern and southernmost areas of the eastern high-strain domain of the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, were studied using infrared microthermometry and Synchrotron x-ray fluorescence. The results indicate the participation of highly saline aqueous H2O-NaCl fluids containing other additional cations (Ca, Fe, K and probably Ti) in solution and homogenisation Temperature (Th) averaging between 130¦ - 190¦C. However, the partial fusion of metastable saturation phases indicates crystallisation temperatures of approximately 400¦C. The mineralisation process produces high-grade orebodies as well as Fe-rich specularitic itabirites that are explored in that area. The shear zones are related to thrust faults mapped and interpreted as related to the PanAfrican/Brasiliano Orogeny that affected the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, thrusting the Paleoproterozoic platform sequence of the Minas Supergroup over Mesoproterozoic quartzites of the Espinhato Supergroup. They intersect and even overprint an early metamorphic and tectonic fabric of Paleoproterozoic age (Transamazonian Orogeny). The geological and fabric relationships lead to the conclusion that the fluids involved in the mineralisation were most probably of external origin, of still unknown source (possibly igneous), during the closure of the Spo Francisco Craton.

Compacted tablets of hematite ore (containing clay and quartz gangue) and limestone were heated in air in an ULVAC-RIKO rapid heating furnace to maximum temperatures in the range 1200-1350°C.The resulting sintered products were examined in terms of mineralogy, texture, strength and reducibility. The sintered tablets are a good analogue of normal plant sinters. These investigations have shown that sinters of optimum reducibility are produced in the narrow temperature range 1250-l275°C. Conditions for the production of such highly reducible sinters under plant conditions are discussed.

The Yara Siilinjärvi plant is located in the central part of Finland. Siilinjärvi is Western Europe's only apatite mine and annually it produces 1 Mt of apatite concentrate, which creates approximately 10 Mt of tailings.At the beginning of 2017, tailings handling in Yara Siilinjärvi was brought to a new era, by replacing the conventional tailings storage facility with a new tailings treatment plant. The new high-density tailings disposal system with two paste thickeners increased the percentage of solids in the slurry from 45–48 per cent to 66-68 per cent, making it possible to deposit as a paste. This extended the life-span of the current tailings storage facility by 15 years; from 2020 to 2035.This paper presents the storyline of the Yara Paste Plant Project. The project began with laboratory testing and then progressed to pilot-scale thickening and beaching trials. After some successful pilot trials, the final process design was implemented. Process instrumentation and automation played a key role in the project, as the aim of the Yara Project was to make the plant operable remotely from the main plant. An advanced control system is needed to maintain process stability and the desired operation point in various operational circumstances.This paper discusses the results from the Yara site since the new tailings treatment plant commenced. Some of the main points are that the operation has been running consistently with an underflow solids content of 66-68 per cent, with average beach slope angles of 3.5 degrees in the tailings disposal area. This control system additionally facilitates minimum use of flocculant, which delivers significant savings to operating costs. Robust thickener operation also leads to the trouble-free high-density pumping and high availability of the Paste Plant. During the first year of operation, the plant’s availability has been very good, over 97 per cent.Currently, the plant still has its own staff working there during the daytime, but the Paste Plant is now already operated remotely during the night shifts. Gold is actively precipitating at grades up to 80 g/tonne at and near the surface of the Waiotapu geothermal system, located in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. Many characteristics of this active system makes it analogous to the environment deduced for epithermal precious metal mineralisation in the circum Pacific region.The near surface area of the geothermal system is approximately 17 km2, caused to an extent by the upflow of deep, neutral pH fluids being deflected into a lateral flow of several km. This fluid has pervasively altered the rhyolite pyroclastic and ash deposits to an assemblage generally characterised by the term propylitic; major vein mineralisation is not observed. The temperatures at the 1100 m limit of drilling are 300¦C, and decrease to the surface along a boiling point curve.Condensation of steam and H S (subsequently oxidised) at the surface (derived 2from deep boiling) results in the formation of heated acid sulphate waters. These have caused a shallow (50 m) cap of advanced argillic alteration. Mixing of this oxidised condensate with the deep neutral pH fluid appears to be the principle cause of gold deposition from thiosulphide complexes. The major focus of gold mineralisation is in Champagne Pool, a hot spring which fills one of several 900 year old hydrothermal eruption craters.

A process was developed based on the thermal hydrolysis and precipitation of iron from solutions resulting from the leaching of zinc plant residue. A study was made of the hydrolysis of iron, at temperatures in the range 140-220°C, in both pure solutions of ferrie sulphate and in leach solutions derived from plant spent electrolyte.At 200°C hydrolysis of pure ferric sulphate solutions results in the precipitation of ferric oxide, Fe2O3, at low acid. concentrations, and a basic salt, Fe2O3.2S03.H20, at hIgher acid concentrations. At 180°C ferric oxide is precipitated at low acid concentrations, but at higher acidities. carphosiderite, 3Fe203.4SO.3.9H20, is the stable phase. Frequently a mIxture of ferric oxide and carphosldente IS produced at 180°C, the ratio of phases being dependent on the non-equilibrium experimental conditions.With solutions derived from plant spent electrolyte hydrolysIS at elevated temperatures results in the precipitation of jarosite compounds of the type NaFe3(S04)2(OH)6 The precipitation of natrojarosite jarosite, and ammonio-jarosite was studied in detail. Temperature, free acidity, and the concentration of sodium potassium, and ammonium ions are critical factors which affect the extent of precipitation.A process based on ammonio-jarosite precipitation was tested in a pilot plant.An alternative method of iron removal based on the addition of zinc oxide calcine, to neutralize excess acidity, and the precipitation of ferric oxide was also tested in the pilot plant. The introduction of digital communications technologies into the underground mining industry, in both coal and hard rock mining, has enabled high bandwidth applications to be applied in the mining industry. Digital networks based on 802.11 b/g/n open Wi-Fi standards have allowed numerous applications to be run over a single communication backbone. One of the many important applications is the tracking of personnel and equipment via RFID Tags. This tracking application has formed the basis of a Proximity Detection System or Collision Avoidance System (Schiffbauer and Mowrey, 2001; Kent, Fischer and Schiffbauer, 2011) thereby improving safety and increasing control in the mining environment. This paper discusses the growth of digital technology as the backbone for communications in underground mining applications. This growth has allowed the ‘convergence of technologies’ (occurring in the general business world) to be available to mine operators in general and underground mine operators in particular. Mine Site Technologies’ involvement with major mining companies and mining equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in developing and supplying their communication systems is also discussed.The latest technical requirements and specifications for communication systems for underground and open cut mines will be reviewed.

Mining operations in arid regions are compelled to reduce their consumption of fresh water. Closed water circuits are an attractive solution and, in addition to reducing freshwater consumption, have the added benefit of reducing reagent consumption as well as the environmental impact by eliminating effluent discharge. Accumulating ionic species have been shown to hinder collector adsorption which reduces the recovery of valuable minerals. Numerous studies have investigated the effect of degrading water quality on collector adsorption however there is very limited understanding as to how this takes place from an electrochemical perspective. This study therefore aims to investigate how the presence of accumulating ionic species at varying concentrations affects the electrochemical adsorption of sodium ethyl xanthate onto galena. The synthetic plant water used in this study comprised of single salt solutions to isolate the effects of the ionic species of interest. The ionic strengths were varied between 0.0242 M, 0.0727 M, 0.1212 M and 0.2426 M which correspond to University of Cape Town (UCT) Centre for Minerals Research (CMR) synthetic plant waters of 1, 3, 5 and 10SPW, respectively. Mineral rest potentials indicated how changing water quality affected xanthate-mineral interactions. Microflotation observed the impact of changing water quality on mineral floatability.

In mining and remote areas of resource industry, there has been a development towards lacking emergency medical first aid response, that creates a potential disadvantage for patients after work accidents and other medical emergencies compared to standard population. This raises the question how a professional emergency medical coverage can be provided underground, taking into account lacking medical professionals in small resource companies combined with long rescue times. Aiming on the closure of this gap, a team of the mine rescue brigade from the Research and Training Mine Reiche Zeche (Forschungs-und Lehrbergwerk (FLB) Reiche Zeche) of the TUBAF Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg in Freiberg/Germany and its cooperating emergency departments of the Freiberg District Hospital and the Zeisigwaldkliniken Bethanien Chemnitz developed a totally new rescue concept using elements from tactical medicine and advanced emergency medicine combined with a specifically designed compact equipment and a highly standardised teaching curriculum. A fully new standardised and condensed tactical medical approach was developed including specifically adjusted equipment, and was taught in a didactically optimised way within 16 lessons in two days. Objective Structured Practical Examinations (OSPE) using manikins and simulated patients were conducted and compared to the identical exam of the reference group, which consisted of advanced paramedics. The standardised tactical medical scheme includes vital functions and body checks, advanced life support, nasal and intraosseous drug application, supraglottic airway management, artificial ventilation, thoracocentesis, bleeding control including tourniquet, fracture repositioning and splinting, transport bedding and thermal preservation. The developed Tactical Medical Mining Rescue (TMR) concept was subsequently included in the German guidelines for mine rescue services in 2022 and is already implemented in many companies in Germany and several international projects.

Situated in north-west Queensland, Australia, the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) has been producing copper and gold since 1996. Owned and operated by Glencore Xstrata, ore is currently sourced from a newly developed underground sublevel cave (SLC) mine below the old EHM open pit (the pit). Ore feed to the concentrator is supplemented by satellite open pits comprising the Mount Margaret operation.The transition from open pit to a producing underground mine involved a complex extraction sequence for the first two production sublevels on RL1650 and RL1625. Underground mining during cave initiation was further complicated when south wall instability prevented completion of the final open pit shell. The transition mining phase included mass firing of an inclined crown pillar between the initial SLC void and the pit followed by a combination of transverse and longitudinal SLC mining.The inclined crown pillar mass firing was the first significant milestone in the extraction of the transition ore block. Comprising approximately 890 000 t of in situ material; 70 000 m of drilling was charged with 351 t of emulsion and 6026 electronic detonators to initiate the single mass firing. The firing contained five direction changes over 19 seconds making it one of the largest and most complex underground blasts ever conducted in Australia.Risk management was integrated into every facet of the technical and operational planning and execution of the transition mining phase, whilst maintaining daily mine construction and production commitments. Getting it right is a very profitable outcome. Shareholders would ideally like to see their directors get it right all the time on the major economic decisions. But it is very difficult for mining directors to get it right all the time in such an uncertain environment. Primary decision-makers of companies with significant stakes in the mining industry should get it right much more frequently. The legal measures of evidence (beyond reasonable doubt and on the balance of probabilities) can be used to determine whether grade estimates (a key revenue variable) are realistic. The application of this approach can be far reaching. More frequently correct decision-making would result in more effective allocation of limited resources (capital and labour). In turn, this would result in higher financial returns and a more extensive mining industry.

Veolia Water Technologies was contracted by a global coal mining company to design a retrofit acid mine drainage treatment facility using DenseSludge™ technology on a former coal refuse disposal site. The project constraint was to reuse current facilities in order to reduce additional capital work cost and avoid additional footprint requirements while improving treatment performance and reducing sludge production and chemical consumption. The initial installation of 454 m3/h served as a pilot plant to demonstrate the benefits of the process and ultimately provided design criteria for the new facility. The pilot demonstrated the benefit of the technology by reducing sludge volume by 90 per cent compared to conventional processes currently in use. The sludge that is reinjected into the mine contains less water, which reduces the volume of water that returns to the mine pool for treatment and mine water balance. Furthermore, the pilot plant reduced lime usage compared to conventional processes by operating at a lower pH set point, demonstrating steady pH control and stoichiometric lime utilisation.CITATION:Dube, C and Banerjee, K, 2015. The Newmont Tanami Operations are located in the Northern Territory, approximately 550 km north-west of Alice Springs. The Granites process plant commenced operations in 1986 as a 300?000 t/a ball mill / carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant and has undergone numerous expansions between that time and the current day, with project-to-date gold production exceeding 6.5 Moz. Annual plant throughput has exceeded 2.8 Mt/a while processing a blend of open pit material and ore from the Callie Deeps underground mine, with annual gold production exceeding 400 koz. In 2013 the operation processed 1.8 Mt of underground ore for the production of 323 koz of gold.This paper reviews the operation and expansion of The Granites process plant since the mid to late 1980s with particular focus on the gravity gold recovery circuit. The Tanami ores contain significant levels of free gold, and gravity recovery has long been an integral component of the metal recovery process at the Granites plant. Since the mid-1970s there has been increasing attention in the South Pacific area to the problems of disaster planning and management at various levels, mainly from regional through national to provincial levels. This concern has been expressed in a variety of ways. International aid donors have made their views known in commentaries or reports. Seminar discussions have been organised at the regional level (such as at Suva, 1976; Suva, 1979; Tonga, 1982 and Suva, 1983). In-country training workshops or meetings have been organised (such as the "Disaster Preparedness Workshops for Non-governmental Organisations" in Pacific countries, jointly run by the Australian Red Cross and the Australian Overseas Disaster Response Organisation and supported by AIDAB, in Vanuatu, 1985; Solomon Islands, 1985; Western Samoa, 1986; Fiji, 1987; Tonga, 1987; Lae and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 1988) or held outside the area (ACDC at Macedon, 1981). Training and/or research institutions have been established such as the East-West Center, Honolulu, and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, Bangkok (more Asia oriented). As part of the East-West Center Pacific Islands Development Program's Disaster Preparedness Project, a detailed manual of disaster preparedness and response procedures and guidelines has been published (Carter, 1984).Table 1 and figure 1 show that the area with which this discussion deals is a highly fragmented island region, comprising many small, some minute, nations, both in land area and population. The social structure is predominantly rural, with the capital city often making up a small part of the total population and, in absolute terms, little more than a small town. Outside the administrative and governmental activities concentrated in the capitals, in most cases the indigenous inhabitants depend on subsistence agriculture or on usually a monocultural concentration on a cash crop, most frequently coconuts.

The usual focus of papers on fatty acid collector action in non-sulfide flotation is on the adsorption of the carboxylate and/or neutral molecule species at the mineral-solution interface. Little attention is paid as to whether or not the solution conditions correspond to true solutions, micellar and other self-assembly objects or precipitates. Our examination of the solution chemistry of the important fatty acid collector, oleic acid, has revealed that many, if not most investigators set their experimental conditions to be in micellar or precipitate domains while arguing, often by implication, that they have only solute species present. We have investigated the equilibrium solution domains usually encountered in studies of oleic acid flotation of such minerals as barite, calcite and fluorite. The alkaline earth-fatty acid and liquid oleic acid precipitate phases exert a strong influence on the solution chemistry, a fact not often appreciated in many studies.

The effect of blast loads on beams is one of the main issues in the analysis of steel structure. In this study, experimental tests on steel beam under blast loading, and also numerical simulation by the Autodyn software to analyse these structures, is discussed. Experiments on steel beam size of 12 by Emulite4 explosive with 30 mm diameter and cortex is done. The lignite mines in the Latrobe Valley of Victoria/Australia have been using continuously operating mining systems for more than 50 years. The relatively small bucket chain dredgers of the early years have been progressively displaced by bucket wheel dredgers with increasing size, increasing capacity and increasing service weight. The large machines for the new open pit Loy Yang have a bucket wheel outreach of 46m, an effective capacity of 3350 bm' coal/h respective 2500 bm' overburden/h and a serv- ice weight of approx. 4500 t. The time between signing of con- tract and starting of operation for these machines is at least four years. The high service weight, the resulting high capital invest- ment and the long period for design, design review, manufac- turing, erection and commissioning of these machines directed the SECV to investigate a possible application of compact dredgers for the Latrobe Valley.
