The problem of production scheduling is sufficiently complex to negate the use of many conventional optimising techniques as there are numerous and diverse factors that must be considered when trying to produce an optimal schedule. These factors include: grade distribution, orebody geometry, production rate capacity, processing constraints and market price of the minerals amongst a variety of others. In addition it may be observed that many of these factors incorporate a degree of uncertainty and any schedule produced must inevitably consider risk as a primary consideration. The very nature of the problem has limited the use of conventional optimisers. Genetic algorithms use methods based upon evolution and natural selection to produce `optimal' solutions to complex system problems. They are extremely flexible and robust in their nature and it is these characteristics that are important in this particular problem domain. A particular strength of the genetic optimisation approach is the ability to handle the multiple and non-linear constraints that are typically encountered in mine scheduling problems. This paper concentrates on the development of a prototype application of a genetic algorithm to the problem of scheduling the output from multiple production points in an underground mining operation. In particular it.describes a system (GO-SCHED) that can be customised to handle a wide variety of underground scheduling problems. GO-SCHED, a Windows-based system, can interface with a variety of databases and spreadsheets for data input and output and provides a simple intuitive approach to the solution of the scheduling problem.

St Helena tunnel is the centrepiece of the Pacific Highway upgrade from Tintenbar to Ewingsdale, abbreviated and commonly known as T2E. At the deepest point the twin tunnels run 45 m below the ridge line of St Helena Hill, located about 5 km west of Byron Bay. The tunnel breakthrough was achieved early in 2014 and the works for permanent lining will be completed in early 2015.Once the project will be handed over to the public in 2015, T2E will deliver a safer highway and uninterrupted traffic flow between New South Wales and Queensland. The design speed in the project area has been set to 110 km/h by the client Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), which will reduce the travel times between Brisbane and Ballina to just over two hours.The two tubes of the tunnel have been designed to accommodate three lanes in each direction with shoulders and walkways on either side of the carriageway. These requirements result in a huge cross-section of about 20 m width and an excavated area of about 210 m2.With the tunnel alignment being situated in basaltic rock, St Helena tunnel is conventionally driven. The selected excavation method was predominantly drill-and-blast with temporary support being installed immediately after the excavation. Despite the wide span of the tunnel, the geology allowed the tunnel perimeter to be supported by only rock bolts and a layer of shotcrete over the majority of its length.Due to environmental reasons one of the approval criteria of the project was that the tunnel must not have a detrimental long-term impact on the groundwater system within St Helena Hill. Consequently the tunnel has been designed as a fully tanked structure with a waterproofing sheet membrane installed on the temporary shotcrete.The permanent structure of the tunnel has to meet a 100-year design life and it is designed as a cast in situ concrete lining. Considering the water pressure on the lining the concrete is reinforced with a significant amount of bar reinforcement.The presented paper provides a more detailed explanation of the geology and the consequential temporary and permanent support measures together with the waterproofing system.CITATION:Mueller, A M, 2014. Teleoperation is one method by which an operator can remotely control and monitor a vehicle. The operator monitors the status and progress of the remote vehicle by watching the video transmitted from one or more cameras which are mounted on the vehicle. In the case of an LHD, it will be fitted with three cameras. For a twin-boom Jumbo, four cameras are mounted on the drill, three of which will have remote pan, tilt, 15x zoom, focus and lens cleaning controls. The advantage of teleoperation is that an operator can stand in the drive and send the remote vehicle around a corner, completely out of sight and still clearly see what is happening. This means that an LHD returns with a full bucket and a Jumbo can be operated from a safe distance. Standing in the drive teleoperating vehicles, exposes the operator to passing traffic including the remote vehicle. There are two solutions to this problem. One is to equip the operator with a Nautilus æBuddyÆ jacket which will help to protect them from all vehicles. The other is to move the operator into a safe room or area, away from the fumes, the noise and the traffic. In this comfortable, less stressful environment, the operator will be more productive and less likely to accidentally damage the vehicle. The operatorÆs æsafeÆ room does not have to be a formal control room, it can be any area which has AC or DC power available and is large enough to contain a chair and a 1.5 m x 0.75 m table. The æsafeÆ room can be on the surface or underground, it does not matter to the operation of the Nautilus Equipment. If the LHDÆs, trucks, locomotives, etc are automatically guided from origin to destination, the operator is free to operate several vehicles at a time, performing only those tasks which are too difficult for a computer to do by itself.

A forecast of mining conditions in Upper Silesia collieries for the beginning of the 21st century has special focus on average depth of mining, energy of seismic tremors induced by mining and energy of dynamic loads on roadway supports. A method of dynamic loads calculation is based on volume of failed rock surrounding an opening and the seismic energy of tremors anticipated. New types of yielding steel arch supports have been designed to resist massive static and dynamic loads and a system of supports has been tested both on 1 : 10 scale models and in natural size. The support sections used are 29, 36 and 44 kg/m.

The distribution of platinum-group elements (pGEs) has been investigated in matte and slag samples from Waterval Smelter (Rustenburg Platinum Mines). The study showed that a strong preference of PGEs for alloy phases in matte represents a concentration mechanism that commenced in the furnace but can be considered a continuum from natural processes. Metal losses to fayalite (converter) slag occur by matte entrainment due to the mechanical capture of liquid sulphide droplets from the matte layer, and the exsolution of dissolved metal sulphide resulting from changes in the oxidation state of the slag. The latter is comparable to immiscible sulphide in basic magmas. However, the observed distribution of PGEs shows enrichment in metal phases of the matte. A mechanism is proposed whereby naked PGEs in silicate melts coalesce to form clusters which are stabilised by surface attachment of sulphur atoms. This envelope acts to 'draw the cluster into sulphide melts. Small particle melting effects permit PGE clusters to remain as liquids at magmatic and smelter temperatures.

A form of wet pelletization is described where the bridging of the individual particles is achieved by a second liquid phase that pref- erentially wets the suspended solid particles. The phenomenon can be used to obtain efficient separation of solids from carrier liquids, to form spheres from finely divided solid materials, and to separate selected constituents from a body of mixed solids. Typical examples of each of these applications are presented.

Five types of mineral resource were known in the sedimentary cover of the oceans and seas floors prior to the 1980's :1) hydrocarbon fields including some very large zones of oil and gas accumulation; 2) "Red Sea" type thermal oozes with increased concentrations of noble metals; 3) ferromanganese nodules; 4) concentrations of metallic sulphides ("Black Smokers"); and 5) cobalt-bearing ferromanganese crusts on the summits and slopes of seamounts. Since then, the so called "White Smokers", containing sulphides of copper and zinc, have been discovered. The ore horizons (manganese, copper, nickel and other metals) of the sedimentary cover of deep-sea basins comprise a sixth type of mineral resource in the oceans. Methane is present in varying degrees in nearly all underground coal mining operations. At mixtures with air near 5-15% it is explosive and consequently since it is not usual for these levels of contamination to be reached in the general body of a mine ventilation system it is not unusual to experience it in specific places. On longwall faces the most used power loader is the shearer machine and because of its general shape, situation and operation it is likely that all the factors which are required to cause a frictional ignition can be present. This paper makes a general appreciation of the causes of these ignitions and methods which are and have been used to control these situations on and around these machines.

Nickel sulphide precipitated from waste liquors at the Yabulu plant of Queensland Nickel Pty Ltd was pressure leached under various conditions. Leaching at 130¦C and 700 kPa of air dissolved 95 per cent of the nickel as the sulphate in less than 2 h. Leaching at 130¦C and 350 kPa of oxygen dis- solved 95 per cent of the nickel in less than 1 h. Dissolution was faster with oxygen than with the equivalent pressure of air. Crystallization of hydrated nickel sul- phate from the resulting clarified leachate is readily achieved. Because the sulphide pre- cipitate also contains minor amounts of iron, copper and cobalt, the crystallization product contains these metals in excess of the amounts required for electrolytic-grade nickel sul- phate. This grade of product could only be produced if the contaminants were removed prior to crystallization. Alternatively, the "crude" nickel sulphate could find a market as a feed for the electrolytic production of Ni-Fe coatings.

Quaternary warping and uplift of antiformal schist ranges in Central Otago, New Zealand, has resulted in recycling of alluvial gold from widespread, generally weakly auriferous, Miocene fluvial gravels that unconformably overlie the schist, into aprons of fan sediments along the range margins. Basement erosion during uplift has been limited and so gold input from sparse gold-bearing quartz veins in the schist has been relatively minor. In an eluvial cycle on the slopes of the ranges, chemical remobilization of gold occurs during oxidation and erosion of the Miocene sediments. The typically fine-grained (300-400¦m) gold undergoes chemical modification and grain size enhancement of up to two orders of magnitude, and much of it is redeposited in a large number of relatively small alluvial fans along the range margins. Groundwater mobility within the fans results in minor additional gold mobility and grain size Enhancement.

Fragmentation variation laws in loading and non-loading areas are obtained by cement block model blasting experiments under various stemming lengths. A reasonable ratio between loading length and stemming length is worked out according to minimum average fragment size. The present continuous loading structure, for its very long length to be stemmed, leads to insufficient fragmentation in the upper part of bench. So a new loading structure with bottom air cushion is put forward. The author analyzes blasting effects and processes of two loading structures' and proves that there exists a optimal length of air cushion.\

Many organisations struggle to yield meaningful outcomes from incident investigations. This paper will demonstrate that we can discover systemic issues by rethinking the ‘Why’ and ‘How’ of investigations, fostering genuine risk reduction. Key points: 1. Shift from ‘prevent recurrence’ to ‘learn and reduce risk’: conventional investigations focus narrowly on recurrence prevention, resulting in narrowly focused investigations with limited ability to identify and reduce organisational risk. Redirecting our objective to learning and improvement opens avenues for broader risk mitigation. 2. Understanding daily work for risk insights: recognise that work is not always completed in full compliance with procedures. Workers will adapt how they complete tasks influenced by the conditions and management systems that exist every day. Understanding the conditions and systems affecting everyday work is vital for uncovering systemic risks. 3. Unearth systemic issues through in-depth exploration: many investigations address surface concerns such as lack of training, incorrect procedures, equipment not being maintained, and missing overarching organisational risks. Systemic, organisation-wide risks are not identified. To discover these systemic issues and create shared learnings, investigators must question management systems, including resourcing, planning and risk management. 4. Design actions for safe failure: common actions like discipline and training fall short and do not reduce risk. Resilience emerges from well-designed controls. Incorporate planning, better resources, interlocks, and guarding to bridge the gap between task execution and risk. 5. Investigation Reports as a Business Case: Investigation reports should not simply state historical information regarding an incident. They are to facilitate decision-making and be presented as a business case to drive change. Organisations can move beyond localised risk and ineffective administrative actions by changing investigation objectives and methods. They can facilitate learning, understand daily work intricacies, identify systemic issues, and enhance the capacity for safety, driving lasting risk reduction.

Coal/gas outbursts were one of the rather difficult safety problems faced in the coal mines of this Country, with coal fields characterized by frequent disturbances of folds, faults and pinch-offs. With average mining depth about 500m below surface, several such accidents occurred with up to 500 tonnes of coal outburst. In recent years, after a series of improving countermeasures had been undertaken, gas outburst accidents had been greatly decreased. The characteristics of gas outbursts in Taiwan coal mines include relating to coal petrography, mining depth and the other deformation forces. All these have been investigated, trying to determine the parameter of outbursts under natural conditions. The preventive countermeasures include predicting tests, de-stressing boring in coal seams, the emergency procedures during outbursts and certain improving options.

Consolidation Coal Company pioneered the development of the horizontal drilling system and licensed the technology in the U.S. A. and to Du Pont (Australia) for commercial production. This paper discusses the most recent developments in the equipment design, especially the borehole telemetry system, known as the Downhole Drill Monitor (DDM).

Standards in the public reporting of resources and reserves in Australia have dramatically improved since the implementation of the Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (The JORC Code) in 1989. Whilst the JORC Code states clearly that Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves are imprecise calculations and should be treated as estimates, there is strong evidence that many people regard them as fact, including some accountants, directors, auditors and investors. Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves are key inputs in the valuation of a mining company and the determination of financial performance. Geological knowledge is the foundation upon which Mineral Resources, Ore Reserves and investment decisions are made, however this information carries with it substantial uncertainty. Case studies and company reports have established that errors derived from inadequate geological inputs have led to reduced profitability in operating mines and in extreme cases the premature closure of mine operations. Whilst there are many causes of mine closure and reduced profitability, including commodity prices and exchange rates, the cumulative effect of all geological uncertainty contributes significantly to the erosion of the credibility of mining within the investment community. There are a number of methods used to characterise and model uncertainty in Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation. Empirical mining indexes, sensitivity analyses, Monte Carlo simulations and Conditional simulations are used to identify and estimate geological uncertainty, notably the quantification of uncertainty in grade and tonnage estimates. These techniques have not generally been applied to estimating geological uncertainty associated with key Ore Reserve inputs such as appropriate mining technique, equipment selection, production rate, mining dilution, stability requirements, materials handling, metallurgical processing, product quality and waste storage. New software tools are needed to model the entire mining process with all its geological and other interdependencies, enabling all uncertainties to be separately identified and estimated. By its very nature, mining involves the assumption of significant technical, financial, political, environmental and social risk. Success comes by understanding and managing these risks and consequently the mining industry will never choose to reduce the level of geological uncertainty to nil. The ultimate aim of improved identification and estimation of geological uncertainty is to quantify inputs into the Ore Reserve process, allowing a company to assess the risks and manage these accordingly. This approach is relevant to feasibility studies for new projects as well as life-of-mine planning through to the weekly schedule at existing mines.

Mathematical modelling was carried out to determine the probable convergence and vertical stress patterns around a retreating longwall panel in an underground coal mine in New South Wales. An 'Electrical Resistance Analogue' and a program called 'THREED' based on the displacement discontinuity method were used for the modelling. Parts of the obtained results are presented here and compared with some measurements of convergence at the site. The modelled and measured data agree better qualitatively, than quantitatively.

For drainage sediment to be used as a successful sampling medium in reconnaissance geochemical surveys, the length of any dispersion train from a typical target must be great enough for it to be detected by a widely spaced sampling pattern, and must also be homogeneous enough to avoid it being missed by the unfortunate selection of a random low value sample. Elements which occur in stream sediments in the form of discrete heavy minerals present two special problems in this regard. Since the element is concentrated into a few particles, the medium is extremely heterogeneous, which makes representative sampling impossible unless very large samples are taken, while the high specific gravity of such grains leads to their being concentrated in traps along the stream bed. Several ways of overcoming these difficulties have been suggested. Among these the "schlich" test, in which heavy material obtained by panning is taken for analysis is among the most popular. However, the results of the present study indicate that while this method improves the nature of the patterns obtained, they are still far from satisfactory. Alternative methods of sample preparation, including the taking of light material for analysis, appear to provide better answers to the problem. In the area studied this approach eliminated most of the "noise" associated with the data obtained by other methods, as well as giving an extended dispersion pattern.

The Cadjebut orebody is a MississippiValleyType (MVT) zinc-lead deposit, and is located approximately 80 km southeast of Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is one of five zinc rich orebodies discovered by BHP Minerals in the region.The participation in the Cadjebut Joint Venture is BHP Minerals limited (Manager), 58 per cent and Billiton Australia Limited, 42 per cent.The mineralisation is contained in gently dipping dolomitised limestone sediments (part of the Lennard Shelf carbonate sequence) with an orebody width of between 60 and 120 m and a strike length of approximately 3 km. The deposit consists of two thin, stratabound shallow dipping orebodies, one overlying the other, to provide discrete but not independent mining areas. The orebody contains approximately 2.1 million tonnes of recoverable ore at an approximate grade of 12 per cent zinc and four per cent Lead.
