It is indeed a pleasure to be here this morning to open the 4th Mill Operators' Conference. It is no mean feat to organise such an event and I would like to congratulate the committee for the work that they have done. I am sure that the Conference will be an outstanding success. I welcome overseas visitors and hope that they gain and share in the openness of this Conference. There is personal satisfaction for me to speak to you as a mining engineer addressing a large group of metallurgists and mill operators. I would have thought that it would be impossible for a mere mining engineer to inform a metallurgist of anything. I will desist from using such derogatory terms as "xanthate munchers", "bubble makers" and "glorified mathematicians". Terms of endearment as these may not be seen with much equanimity. Such is the warm association that the two professions have enjoyed over the years. The economic climate that we at present face is a major problem to all of us. I wonder how many people here come from mining operations that are in trouble financially or that are cutting back in one form or another. This is the recession that we needed to have. When the world's greatest treasurer can tell us that then we truly have a lot to fear. The present downturn can be seen as a normal adjustment in the cycle of our business. Yet the world does not experience such severe adjustments as frequently as we experience ours. The root cause for the regular adjustments can be placed at the feet of inflation. Until the politicians of this country of ours can come to grips with inflation, we will continue to experience downturns on a 5 to 7 year cycle. This, in my opinion, is the basic reason why we appear to experience more downturns than the rest of the world. We simply price ourselves out of the market. This takes about 5 to 7 years to be highlighted and then we need to make adjustments. However, this recession is worldwide. The adjustments usually take the form of redundancies, retrenchments and early retirements. What is the solution?

The problems facing the metallurgical industry from the viewpoint of the range of unacceptable residues, flue dusts and slags currently produced from the electrolytic zinc process, electric arc furnace scrap treatment, and blast furnace operation in lead smelting and the Imperial Smelting Process (ISP) are addressed. The application of the Ausmelt technology is discussed and analysed for the pyrometallurgical treatment of zinc plant residues, steel plant flue dusts and lead blast furnace and ISP slags, as well as the more complex issue of smelter modernisation to avoid production of zinc plant residues in the future. Processes developed from pilot work are described and indications of the economics of treatment of electrolytic zinc plant neutral residue and jarosite are given.

IMA Engineering (IMA) and Mine On-Line Service (MOLS) companies have used on-line sensors for analysing ore and waste rock in mining for more than 25 years. Today IMA on-line sensors are used in various stages of the mining process including on-line analysis of drill cores, drill chips, ore and waste in loader bucket, ROM ore analysis on belt conveyor belt and in bulk ore sorting and in slurry analysis in concentrators. During years of extensive field experience and testing we have found that the waste rock dilution and ore losses create much larger economic and environmental losses than has been previously recognized. According to our studies the main reason is limited number of analysis already in exploration when drill cores or drill cuttings are used in block modelling. The same happens in production because too few and biased samples from benches are used to estimate the ore grade. Much more than today estimated amount of waste enters the mill and considerable volumes of ore losses happen at the same time. The ore grade on the benches and in muck piles is averaged and “homogenized” with averaged and biased samples. These are the main root causes of waste rock dilution and ore losses. Sensor based preconcentration can be the remedy to waste rock dilution and ore losses. This presentation will show examples of the use of on-line sensors in preconcentration when analysing ore and waste rock in drill cores, drill cuttings, on conveyor belt and in bulk ore sorting. Waste rock removal in preconcentration has direct effect on energy consumption in crushing and grinding and chemicals in concentrator. In concentrator waste is separated and goes to tailings pond, however, preconcentration directly reduces the volume of the tailings. In our presentation we will cover cases in base metals and in gold mines.

Mt. Whaleback is in the Pilbara region of Western Australia approximately 1200 kilometers north of Perth, the State capital. In this deposit the Mt. Newman Joint Venturers are mining ore reserves totalling 1500 million tonnes of high grade hematite averaging 64.0% Fe. In addition to Mt. Whaleback, 38 ore bodies have so far been identified outside Mt. Whaleback on the Company's remaining 75,000 hectares of lease area. These ore bodies contain major tonnages of iron ore. Extraction at present is planned at a rate of 37 million tonnes per annum at an ore-to-waste ratio of approximately 1 to 1.4. The ore is railed north to Port Hedland on the Indian Ocean where the different products are screened, crushed and blended prior to shipping. The purpose of this paper is to acquaint the reader with the facilities installed in the Mt. Newman operation to form a background to the sampling techniques employed, describe the precisions which were achieved in experiments conducted February through June, 1976 and also to assess the degree of blending which takes place during the various processes and to put a quantitative measure to the degree of blending. This paper discusses experimental results of physical scale models employed to study the stability of a pillar between rectangular roadways. A programme of laboratory investigations utilising a bi-axial test rig has been undertaken to examine the influence of various stressfields on the stability of pillars between mine roadways. The effect of pillar height/width ratio on the overall stability is studied. Observations of failure characteristics in and around pillars are discussed especially in relation to the various stressfields applied to the models.

In the five years since Great Central Mines Limited (GCM) commenced exploration in the Jundee and Bronzewing areas of Western Australia's Yandal greenstone belt, the Company has been transformed from a junior explorer into Australia's fourth largest gold producer with annual production of approximately 440 000 ounces and mineral resources of seven million ounces of gold.The growth in resources has been driven by a high quality geoscientific approach, supported by a substantial budget for drilling and strong management commitment. In 1997, the Company expects to spend US$30 million on exploration in the Yandal greenstone belt.

IN 1904-5 diamond drilling operations in the Mount Morgan mine proved the presence of some millions of tons of rich copper-gold ore, averaging about 45%to 50%silica and 22%Fe as sulphide. To smelt this ore in blast furnaces, without previous concentration, large quantities of basic flux were required. Unlimited quantities of cheap limestone were available at Marmor, on the GladstoneRockhampton railway, 50 miles from Mount Morgan, but the supply of iron flux was a more difficult problem. Smelting Operations started with one furnace in January, 1906, using as flux low-grade sulphide ore from the mine, containing very little silica. When the second furnace was blown in this was supplemented by ironstone from small deposits in the immediate district. It was recognized that these sources of supply would be insufficient to keep the full plant going after the third furnace had been blown in. Accordingly, the deposits at Kabra and Mount Etna were opened, neither of which proved capable of supplying the quantity required-viz., 1000 tons per week. Negotiations were meanwhile being conducted with the Marble Island Iron and Limestone Co. to obtain the right to mine at Iron Island, where a sufficiently large deposit was known to exist. Filter Presses are used in a wide range of process industries where high quality filtration at elevated pressure is required. This is mainly due to the fact that modern presses are fitted with polypropylene filter plates which combine excellent corrosion resistance with high mechanical strength. Filtration pressures of 15 Bar at ambient temperatures are common ensuring low residual moisture content and easily manageable filter cakes. Recessed polypropylene chamber plates have been in use for the last 15-20 years and have replaced plates and frames almost entirely. The latest development in plate technology is the polypropylene membrane plate. These provide lower moisture content cakes at significantly higher capacity than recessed chamber plates. Because of their stayboss-free construction, membrane plates provide excellent cake washing facilities which make them suitable for a wide range of process applications. Membrane plates are available both as fixed and exchangeable membrane types. Overhung membranes can be fitted to existing plates manufactured in cast iron or plastic to enhance the performance of existing presses.

Conditional simulation is a set of geostatistical tools that is becoming popular as powerful personal computers make the use of these tools less costly. The more familiar set of tools for spatial estimation has a number of varieties (eg Ordinary Kriging, Simple Kriging, Multiple Indicator Kriging, etc) each suited to particular solutions of the problem of estimation, for example predicting the average grades of blocks in a region from more or less sparse data. Similarly, conditional simulation has a number of varieties, discussed in this paper, which in various ways address the problem of characterising the variability of a deposit between the known data locations.Conditional simulation can provide a number of equiprobable images of a deposit, at a finer resolution than would be economic or practical to sample, and that can be constrained by various criteria (which may be geological, statistical and geostatistical), to ensure that the images reasonably represent the deposit. These images can then be used to assess the risk involved in various practical mining decisions. Examples are provided where conditional simulation has been used for validating resource estimate parameters, optimising grade control sampling grids, and for ore block optimisation for mining grade control.

A significant basemetal province is recognised in the southern part of the Bonaparte Basin, Western Australia. Epigenetic stratabound carbonate hosted Pb-Ag-Zn mineral- isation occurs in dolomites of Tournasian age within a marginal marine transgressive carbonate and fine grained clastic sequence, spatially overlying the lagoonal facies of a Late Devonian reef complex. The deposits comprise coarse grained sulphide mineralisation characterised by high Pb:Zn ratios (10:1) and high silver (50 g/t) content. They occur at shallow depth, are flat to moderately dipping, and form a discontinuous mineralised trend at the margin of the Sorby Platform, which flanks a Precambrian basement high. Host rocks are predominantly sedimentary breccias and dolomitised footwall carbonates associated with a significant local unconformity transgressed by a siltstone cap rock sequence. The deposits are structurally related to synsedimentary growth faults, local basement highs and tensional en-echelon breccia systems. Fluid inclusion studies have concluded that mineralisation was deposited from a low temperature (85¦C-115¦C) saline ore forming solution. Lead isotope work reveals a Precambrian genetic source of the lead. Locally remnant textures after sulphates are recognised within the host sequence together with common bitumen and oil shows. Reduction of sulphate to H2S was possibly facilitated by either bacteria. activity, or by residual hydrocarbons which acted as a reducing agent. An alternative source of H2S may have been afforded by the thermal degradation of hydrocarbons. A 'mixing' genetic model is proposed for the mineralisation, which conceives the expulsion of metal enriched basinal brines followed by their precipitation as sulphides after mixing with locally derived reduced sulphur solutions at relatively shallow depths in their structural/stratigraphic sites of ore deposition.

Salinity in Australia is caused by over irrigation and land clearing for agricultural use over the last 100 years. It is now the biggest threat to the quality of land and water in the Murray Darling Basin and Western Australia. Pumping the saline waters straight into the ocean or transporting the solid residue (mainly sodium chloride) to the ocean after evaporation of the water is expected to cost the taxpayer millions of dollars every year. This paper proposes that the salinity problem of Australia, at least in part, can be converted to an asset rather than a liability if it is exploited and used to make value-added products. The more value made out of saline waters, the more saline water is processed and therefore the more salt is extracted from the land. The value-added products that can be made out of saline waters are numerous and diverse. Rough calculations show that value addition to the saline waters could potentially generate up to $A 200 million per annum business in the Murray-Darling Basin. Although it is a challenge to make cost competitive products and find markets for these products it is possible that up to $A 100 million per year may be gained from import substitution. Value addition to salinity would also reduce the threat on the environment and existing agricultural industry. Investment to add value to salinity will create business in the region, nurture the local small population communities, and increase services and long-term employment.

Narrow vein tabular orebodies are prone to mining induced seismicity. The Tasmania Mine is a complex example of a seismically active tabular orebody, where the contrasting material properties of the host strata and of the orebody itself, serve to exacerbate the seismic response. Analysis of a continuous record of seismicity over a period of seven years has provided significant insight into the fundamental mechanics of the rock mass. Understanding seismicity to permit safe extraction of the orebody has been enhanced by instrumentation of rock mass behaviour in response to mining and mining induced seismicity. It is the purpose of this paper to explore that understanding in respect to the adoption of an alternative down-hole Avoca stoping method for use in particular circumstances.Intensive instrumentation of the Tasmania Mine over a period of four years has provided insight into the behaviour of the rock mass in response to extraction of the narrow vein orebody it encompasses. A range of instruments have been installed in clusters or single installations in order to measure changing stress conditions and the impact of those changes on the rock mass and the reinforcement system.Instruments are often installed in very close proximity to active production stoping. While it has been possible to observe the impact of the mining and mining induced seismicity at very close quarters, instruments installed in these locations are vulnerable to damage and consequently, the level of instrumentation is high. Instruments are continuously logged, typically on a six hourly basis coinciding with the end of regular blasting times. The response of the instrumentation to changed rock mass conditions is considered against the background of development and production blasting and against the seismic record to assess the viability of downhole Avoca stoping.CITATION:Hills, P B and Walton, R J, 2012. Poor selectivity in the separation of two sulphides generally arises because the flotation characteristics of the coarse sizes of the valuable mineral and finer sizes of non-valuable minerals are identical. Separat- ing the pulp into two size fractions at a specifically determined cut size and conditioning each size fraction with its own optimum reagent addi- tion is known to be helpful in improving such selectivity problems. The performance of the zinc section of the complex ore circuit at Wood- lawn Mines has been analysed in detail. The selective recovery of zinc was found to be a problem in zinc/pyrite separation. However, atypi- cally, the separation problem was between coarse zinc and coarse, not finer, pyrite. In spite of this the use of separate conditioning has effected significant improvements in rougher concentrate. Selectivity (and hence grade), overall recovery and flotation rate have all been enhanced. Dis- appointingly, coarse zinc recovery was not increased but, with careful optimization, this might be achieved without sacrificing the gains already realized. The technique of separate conditioning clearly has general application in other circuits where selectivity is a significant problem.

Underground airways are characterized by irregular shape and uneven surfaces including large-scale natural roughness, fractures, and a super-imposed sand roughness. Swirls in the grooves of the wall and separation because of the periodic variation of the open cross sec- tion, due to the blasting patterns, make it almost impossible to calculate average con- vective heat transfer computationally on the bases of the geometrical description of the surface. However, dimensionless friction factors can be used to characterize the surface effect of an airway and an analogy between heat and momentum transfer can be applied to calcu- late an average convective heat transfer Coefficient.

The Hunter Valley Rail Project (HVRP) represents most of the coal producers using the Hunter Valley Rail System in NSW to haul coal to the port of Newcastle. This system carries over 70 per cent of NSW's coal exports, comprising over 30 per cent of total Australian coal exports. Hunter Valley coal is the largest export industry in NSW, and one of its largest export growth opportunities. However, the industry is under intense pressure in international markets from existing and new coal producers and from other energy sources. Whilst potential growth in demand is substantial, particularly for thermal coal in Asia, excess world supply has pushed prices down, and this underlying trend may well continue. The industry has lost international competitiveness and as a result, investment has dropped 44 per cent over the last two years. The industry must be rapidly structured to compete and attract investment on the basis that these pressures will continue. Substantial productivity improvement and cost reductions must be made for the industry to regain competitiveness, otherwise growth will not occur and the industry will decline, with serious implications for the Australian and NSW communities. The introduction of internationally competitive rail freight rates is an urgent and essential part of this process. It is the key objective of the HVRP.

This paper outlines the feasibility assessment conducted to explore the possibility of constructing two submarine water supply pipelines beneath the Ma Wan Channel in Hong Kong using either horizontal directional drilling or tunnelling. The Ma Wan Channel is a major shipping channel in the Northwest New Territories, which separates Ma Wan Island from the mainland. The challenges faced by the projectÆs designers included space limitations on either side of the channel, marine department restrictions on construction activity within the channel and selection of a suitable crossing alignment and profile given the channelÆs depth, irregular sea floor topography and complex geology. The existing geological information indicated the proposed alignment would cross granitic and volcanic formations, which would likely be faulted. The primary concerns with horizontal directional drilling were:the length, diameter and depth of the crossing were at the limit of precedent experience in rock; the lack of available space at both the entry and exit sites; and whether the technique would be flexible enough to cope with the anticipated range of ground conditions. The primary concerns for tunnelling were: the possibility of encountering large inflows of high pressure groundwater; andthe possibility of encountering disturbed ground within the fault zones which could flow if not properly treated. As a means to evaluate and mitigate these technical risks for both construction options, a directionally drilled pilot hole was used to investigate the ground conditions along the proposed pipeline alignment. The pilot hole results indicated that either directional drilling or a closed face TBM drive were technically feasible crossing options at a crossing depth of 80 m. The results also indicated that either an open face TBM or a drill blast drive would need to be constructed at much greater depth because of the presence of highly permeable, disturbed ground in mid-channel at this crossing elevation.

Permanent rock bolts in civil engineering are taken as having to serve their design purpose for at least 50 years. In many projects the design life is specified as greater than 100 years. A review of recent Australian tunnelling projects shows that substantial differences exist in the level of corrosion protection provided for permanent steel shafted rock bolts. This paper reviews the current state of practice and sets out what the authors consider to be appropriate requirements for corrosion protection.

Coal dust is hazardous to underground coal workers and water spray is the most common and economic method for controlling coal dust. Previous studies proved that the addition of surfactants can improve the performance of water spray on coal dust suppression. The evaluation methods for surfactants vary from different studies. The zeta potential test is a common method for evaluating surfactants with ionicity. Generally, the suspension of coal dust with pure water usually showed a negative value of zeta potential. The addition of cationic surfactants can increase the zeta potential to a positive value with a small dosage, while the addition of anionic surfactants can only lower the zeta potential. However, there is a lack of comprehensive study to investigate the relationship between the zeta potential and the suppression performance for coal dust. The aim of this study is to reveal the consistency and discrepancy between the zeta potential and the suppression efficiency of a surfactant. Firstly, the mixture of cationic surfactant solutions and coal dust would be evaluated by the zeta potential test. The wind tunnel tests would then be conducted for the same surfactant solutions to measure and calculate the suppression efficiency. It was found that the addition of surfactant can increase the zeta potential and the suppression efficiency and it reached the greatest efficiency when the zeta potential approached to zero. The equilibrium of zeta potential can benefit the suppression performance of surfactants in the wind tunnel test. The result of this study can achieve a better understanding of the mechanism for coal dust suppression. The selection of surfactants will also be suggested for researchers or industries in terms of coal dust control. It would be more economic if a similar performance could be achieved by less consumption of surfactants.

Mathematical modelling of scrubbers in development and longwall operations in underground mines produces useful results. Mathematical modelling on the mounting of scrubbers on longwall supports shows that the number of scrubbers and the air quantity through the scrubber are the two important parameters. Increase in both these parameters results in decrease in dust levels at the tail gate. The critical factors are scrubber efficiency and the ratio of the air through the scrubber/total air quantity.Results of parametric studies conducted to establish factors which have dominant influence on the effectiveness of the scrubbers on dust levels and high gas build-up in the scrubber show that for use of scrubbers in development headings, the order of importance of parameters in relation to dust concentration in the scrubber area is: scrubber efficiency, rate of production, specific dust make/tonne, leakage factor, intake dust concentration, recirculation factor and air quantity through the scrubber.The equations developed for mathematical analysis and the detailed results of modelling provide useful data on recirculation of emitted gas in the use ofscrubbers for dust control.
