Blasting in mines in an urban environment can be conducted safely and within regulatory vibration limits by careful attention to detail and the application of correct techniques. Factors affecting blast vibration are described using surface and underground mining examples. An understanding of these factors provides an essential base for effective planning and operational control. Techniques are described for assessing and predicting vibration levels and the presentation of data for planning purposes such as environmental impact statements for new projects and the protection of buffer zones around existing operations.

The categories of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves that may be used for public reporting in Australasia are defined in the current JORC Code (2004). Most internationally accepted codes emphasise the principles of transparency, materiality and competence in classifying resources. They also provide some guidance in considering the impact of data quality. There is no method recommended in the JORC Code to classify a Mineral Resource into the allowed categories of Measured, Indicated and Inferred for public reporting. A clearly defined procedure is desirable for many reasons, including consistency, repeatability and auditability. The demonstrated use of geological knowledge in the classification method is desirable. In deposits with abundant historical data there can be large variations in data type and quality. Quantification of the error of the estimates may also be considered. Ways to formally incorporate such information into the resource classification process are presented as a first step towards establishing an objective, repeatable methodology that allocates resources into appropriate categories based on defined criteria of accuracy and precision.

For many years the mining industry at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia, was carried on with just sufficient attention to underground ventilation and hygiene conditions as to keep pace with necessity. However, the campaign against industrial diseases in other mining centres (notably South Africa) some years ago, brought the subject more prominently before local mining engineers.Throughout a period of several years, gradual improvement has been effected, and at the present time industrial hygiene is considered an essential part of the production operations of the various companies.In June, 1918, a move was first made by the Board of Trade advising an inquiry respecting the health of employees engaged in the metalliferous mining industry in the State of New South Wales. At the end of that year, a recommendation was made to the State Government by the Board of Trade that a Techni.cal Commission of Inquiry be appointed to examine and report upon the dust conditions of the metalliferous mines at Broken Hill. Following this a second report presented in 1919 made specific recommendations in respect to the scope of such a Commission. A Technical Commission of Inquiry was accordingly appointed and arrived in Broken Hill to inquire into the prevalence of miner's phthisis and pneumonoconiosis in the mines. Early in March, 1920, the examination of all mine employees commenced, and the work was completed in June, 1920. Outokumpu has developed a new chloride leach process, called HydroCopper«, to treat copper concentrates. Chalcopyrite is quite refractory in leaching and in sulfate milieu an autoclave of high temperature and pressure is required. However, in the HydroCopper«-process copper sulfides can effectively be leached in atmospheric pressure using strong, aggressive chloride solution and copper (II) ions as oxidant. Copper is precipitated from the purified pregnant leach solution as copper (I) oxide, which is filtered and reduced by hydrogen gas to metallic copper powder, which is melted and cast into copper product. Sodium chloride formed in precipitation is decomposed in a chlor-alkali electrolyser, the products of which are circulated back to the process: sodium hydroxide to copper (I) oxide precipitation, chlorine gas to leaching and hydrogen gas to the reduction of copper (I) oxide. During 2003 - 2004 the performance of the HydroCopper«-process was confirmed in a demonstration plant processing one tonne of copper per day. It has been found to be applicable for different kinds of concentrates and can also tolerate a wide range of impurities. A significant advantage of the process is that gold can be leached as a chloro-complex and recovered with active carbon. HydroCopper« can economically recover copper from concentrates and process to a cast copper product. The best utilisation of the process is in most cases achieved when the plant is situated at the mine site. Higher recoveries are attained by the optimisation of the whole operation chain from the mine and the concentrator to the HydroCopper« plant.

Transportation of iron ore from the mine to the plant is critical to business success. Ore from the mine may have to be transported across states, countries and even continents to get to the processing plant or export facilities, and ultimately to the client. Numerous transportation steps may result in potential logistical difficulties. Companies are continually seeking ways to increase production rates, decrease delivery times and reduce operating costs. Transportation cost is a major component of the total cost of mining iron ore and therefore requires effective use of transport systems.Bottlenecks in iron ore transport systems, due to material handling issues, can result in loss in profit in the order of millions of dollars per hour. Bottlenecks can be seen anywhere in the transport system where the desired flow rate cannot be achieved. These bottlenecks occur for various reasons such as increasing throughput in a transport system originally designed for a lower throughput resulting in plugged transfer chutes, changing material characteristics (eg finer material, increased moisture content), changing to a new type of material or blend that again alters handleability, or changes in operational philosophy due to equipment availability or process utilisation.Stockpiles may have limited live capacity such that an adequate amount of ore may not be readily reclaimed when required (eg to fill a complete train’s railcars). In bins and hoppers, material may discharge through a central flow channel resulting in the formation of a stable rathole, which can then collapse causing material to flood the downstream system and cause significant downtime for clean-up (eg railcars beneath train load outs). In transfer chutes, bottlenecks can be caused by pluggages or downtime required for the change-out of liners due to excessive wear. In ship loading, long settling or de-aeration time, or material exceeding its transportable moisture limit (TML) may result in further bottlenecks. These bottlenecks all have associated costs because of the need to address their causes and because of the lost opportunities for throughput.This paper will discuss how bulk material technology and proper understanding of material flow characteristics can be applied to mitigate bottlenecks. It will discuss how to predict potential bottleneck locations through a scientific method of analysis and evaluation to determine if an increase in throughput of an existing transport system is possible, as well as whether or not a new material will flow reliably through an existing system.CITATION:Hartford, C E, Holmes, C P and Tan, T, 2015. Historically mining engineers haven't spent enough time planning waste dumps, but waste movement costs often outweigh ore haulage costs. There is a real incentive to plan waste dumps right the first time to minimise rehandle and final closure costs. At BHP Billiton Iron Ore there has been an increasing sophistication in waste dump design and they are becoming as important as the pit design. Closure landforms are now included in mining studies. Closure is embedded in the business planning cycle. The results from the recent life of mine study at Whaleback is a case in point where a base case of the shortest hauls with no closure constraints was compared against a closure case. A properly planned and executed waste plan revealed that no rehandle was required and haulage costs were eight per cent less if closure design implementation was carried out concurrent with mining. At cessation of mining the landforms were such that decommissioning of critical acid rock drainage dams and coverage of exposed pyrite areas could occur straight away, without the need for additional rehandle.  The paper also covers design and scheduling elements of waste design both in-pit and ex-pit, management of potentially acid forming material (PAF) and trends in PAF management and designing for final landform closure. This paper illustrates that there is value in terms of costs savings, sustainable outcomes and reputation if the mine planners are involved in the closure planning process.

The Australian Mining Industry Council (A.M.I.C.) was established in 1967 as a body to co-ordinate the interests of the mining industry on a nation-wide basis. Its member- ship now embraces the great majority of mining groups in Australia. One of A.M.I.C.'s major continuing functions since its formation has been to work with Governments towards the enactment of more effective and efficient mining legislation. Yet, over the period, the,overall position, if anything has deteriorated. The main reason for this was that because of the rapid succession of what appeared to be quite separate problems during the period there was never sufficient time for Govern- ments to take stock of a situation before it would be changed by a new set of circumstances. By early 1973, the Council was certain that most of the various questions raised were really part of the one overall land use problem and its work in this area thus took a new emphasis from that time. In discussing the Council's involvement with Australian mining legislation over the last six years, the paper helps to clarify the present situation. Preventing injuries and fatalities related to conveyor system use in the mining industry is important and increases uptime while decreasing lost time. The research presented here is funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and intended to accomplish this prevention by the use virtual environments (VEs) to improve training and help miners better understand the hazards of working around conveyor systems. Two conveyor system VEs designed to teach miners about hazards and to safely complete tasks around conveyor systems were developed for this project. The first conveyor system VE, called the instructional tour, gives the miner a semi-automated tour of a conveyor system and teaches the miner about possible hazards (eg, missing guarding) and how to safely fix conveyor problems (eg, a stuck idler) using lock-out, tag-out procedures. The second, called the virtual shift, allows the miner to freely navigate around a conveyor system to detect and avoid hazards. The miner is presented with equipment failures that need to be safely repaired during the virtual shift. If the miner fails to identify and avoid a hazard or fix a failure in a safe manner, an animation of the consequences is shown to the miner, who must start the virtual shift over. The models for the conveyor system VEs were created using 3DS Max. Desktop versions of the VEs were then created using Deep CreatorÖ, an authoring application for creating interactive 3D environments. Later, more realistic versions of the VEs were created for CAVEÖ, a room-sized visualisation system, using DIVERSE, an application programming interface. In initial evaluations of the conveyor system VEs, mining colleagues have indicated great interest in such training tools. According to their feedback, these and similar VEs would provide excellent alternatives to normal classroom training and serve as positive precursors to hands-on experience. These VEs provide new miners a chance to experience hazards associated with working around conveyor systems without being in possible danger.

Batch centrifugal gravity concentrators have become standard equipment in gold grinding circuits for recovery of gravity recoverable gold (GRG). The downstream benefits of installing a gravity circuit are well understood, and in general, if there is a reasonable amount of GRG in the ore, a gravity circuit is usually installed. The benefits of gold gravity recovery have also been well documented, with a large database of successful case studies. As well, predicting production scale gravity recovery results ahead of installing gravity has become a common practice. The missing link between lab and full scale has always been the ability to predict the recovery benefit of installing gravity ahead of actually doing so. Being able to predict the recovery benefit in advance would help an operation in assessing the economic benefit and help justify the capital costs of the gravity circuit with much less uncertainty.

The factors affecting performance of base and precious metal smelting and converting processes are considered in relation to reactor characteristics. The chemical differences between processes are related to these factors for different reactor systems. The complete smelting and converting flowsheet involves a number of operations. The process selected for a particular feed and product requirement should be one which optimises the efficiency of the process, the cost of building and operating the technology and the long-term maintenance and productivity of the units.Ausmelt's approach to achieving an efficient process using its technology is described in relation to the smelting of copper concentrates for production-of blister copper.

This paper is intended to continue the subject in the light of recent work, from where it was left at the conclusion of the discussion on the excellent paper by the late Mr. Noel Haszard. The position then obtaining is briefly summarised below:-The points which received general agreement at that time were:-'(1) That the gold occurs, probably in an elemental form, in a state of very fine division in the pyrite.(2) That the aim in roasting of Kalgoorlie flotation concentrates should be to obtain the maximum porosity possible. The gold tellurides were amenable to treatment with either a' solution of high lime and cyanide strength combined with fine grinding, or bybromocyanidation without re-grinding.(3) That a low roasting temperature is essential during the elimination of the first atom of sulphur, if the final calcine is to give a good extraction by cyanidation.(4) Even with the best temperature conditions of roasting then determined, and after a period of cyanidation of the calcines until no further extraction was obtainable, the lowest calcine residues obtainable were equivalent to approximately 1·8 dwts. per long ton, based on an original concentrate of pure pyrite.There was some division of opinion at the time as to whether the temperature of the later stages of roasting was significant, and also as to the reason why the initial roasting temperatures had so marked an effect.

The Permian rocks at Gympie were first studied as far back as 1868 in conjunction with the discovery of gold. The relationship of the Gympie Group to other sequences in the Gympie Composite Terrane is an important subject of investigations in a new mapping project of the Geological Survey Program of the Department of Resource Industries.In two areas the Gympie Group has been divided into four defined formations. They are the Highbury Volcanics (base), Ram mutt Formation, South Curra Limestone and Tamaree Formation (top) in the Gympie area, and the Mant basalt (base), Kolbar Formation, Gigoomgan Limestone and Teebar Formation (top) in the Gigoomgan area. Geochemical and lithological evidence from the basal volcanics of the Gympie Group (Highbury Volcanics, Mant basalt) indicate that they developed in an intraoceanic island arc setting. The overlying volcaniclastic sediments (Rammutt Formation, Kolbar Formation), which contain some continentally-derived material, are mainly of local derivation and shallow-water marine. A hiatus is present at the top of the Early Permian Rammutt Formation and Kolbar Formation. Following the hiatus, limestone sedimentation characteristic of a basin of restricted circulation developed in the Late Permian. There is some evidence of a hiatus between the limestone deposition of the Gigoomgan and South Curra Limestones and the overlying probable turbidite deposits of the Teebar and Tamaree Pnrmatinnc

Background A recent development in many industries,' including the mining industry, has been ever increasing acceptance and adoption of extended (12-hour) shifts and compressed work cycles compensated by more time off work by employees between cycles. In the Western Australian mining industry development of `long-distance-commute' (LDC) coincided with adoption of 12-hour rotating shifts. Preludes to LDC were the `construction-style' rosters with two crews plus allowance for annual and sick leave relievers working the statutory 13 consecutive shifts followed by one shift off. Crews rotated day to night shift weekly or at fortnightly intervals. Average hours of 72 to 78 per week were common. The author had personal experience working these rosters in the East Pilbara of Western Australia from 1977 to 1982. Workers tolerated these rosters until a suitable combination of frustration, boredom, despair and the `Five Grand Fever' triggered them to `pull the pin' and head for relaxation in Bangkok, Manila, Nimbin, or Margaret River according to their personal tastes.

Feed ore variability, the major disturbance into a mineral processing plant receives considerable attention operationally, and at research and strategic levels to ensure that the throughput of the ore are maintained at all times whilst encouraging a sustainable approach to recovering the valuable minerals from ore bodies. Effort and insights from mineralogical and processing characterisation (eg. ore hardness) of sub-ore body domains allows sequencing for processing to ensure consistency and throughput for the size sensitive grinding unit processes. Optimising the blast fragmentation has benefit as does pre-concentration using ore sorting. Blending of ore domains with different characteristics is common for operations. In recent years a number of technologies have become available for on-line and more rapid assessment of ore and have been discussed in a recent paper by Cameron et.al. (2016) as an opportunity for further utilisation of mine-to-mill (and mine to product) strategies. Current concepts have focused on extensive characterisation of ores so that current control practices can be realised and made more effective with relatively slow measurements and actuation. Noranda Inc is a Canadian mining and metallurgical company with its activities managed through businesses in copper and recycling, zinc, aluminum, magnesium and various metals through its interest in Falconbridge Ltd. Noranda operates three base metal mines, three copper smelters, one copper refinery, one zinc refinery, one lead smelter and refinery, three copper recycling and sampling facilities seven aluminum producing facilities and one magnesium production facility in the construction stage. The mining side of Noranda has a strong history of open stope, cut and fill and shrinkage mining. The 1999 Noranda Annual Report lists a 206 million tonne resource located at Porphyry Mountain in GaspT, QuTbec. Mont Porphyre is a large tonnage, low-grade porphyry style Cu-Mo deposit that was discovered in 1994. It is located at a depth between 1.0 and 1.7 km below surface and characterised by a very competent rock mass. The Mont Porphyre resource is located adjacent to the town of Murdochville, close to NorandaÆs Mines GaspT operations. Mines GaspT closed its open pit and underground operations in 1999 after approximately 45 years of mining, but still operates a copper smelter near Murdochville. The low-grade and great depth of the Mont Porphyre resource suggested that mine design could not be based on the conventional Noranda open stoping mining practice. This paper will review NorandaÆs approach to evaluating the Mont Porphyre deposit. The approach included two definition diamond drilling campaigns, a review of current caving practice, an in-house scope study, a geotechnical logging program for diamond drill core and participation in an international study on cave mining. One interesting component of NorandaÆs approach was the scope study that involved a team of multi-disciplinary personnel drawn together for a short period of time. The objective of the scope study was to determine what conditions would be necessary to mine the deposit and to assess the merits of continuing with further exploration work. A review of current worldwide underground bulk mining practices, and in particular an evaluation of the applicability of caving mining methods, were key components of the scope study. The scope study team concluded that derivatives of caving could be applied to the mining of Mont Porphyre, but additional diamond drilling was recommended to further define the deposit and improve the level of geotechnical information. Following the recommendations of the scope study team, a diamond drilling campaign was completed during the summer and fall of 1997. The 1997 drilling campaign had two secondary objectives, in addition to the primary objective of defining the limits of the orebody. The first objective was to improve the level of geotechnical information available for the characterisation of primary block cave fragmentation. The second objective was to improve the delineation of a lower grade intrusive core. A geomechanical investigation was conducted and included particular emphasis on geotechnical data collection and analysis. A review of the actual data collection process, including several trials of different core orientation techniques, will be included in the discussion.

The large, low grade, Kidston Gold Mine in North Queensland has achieved outstanding economies of scale and profitability. The total mineable ore reserve including mined to-date (as at December 1993) was 70.75 million tonnes at 1.54 grams gold per tonne. After nine years of mining, grade control mine production routinely reconciles against mill production and ore reserves to within five per cent of contained gold. The grade control system developed at Kidston is examined in detail, with emphasis on the geological thinking behind the strategies, as well as the development and application of a computerised, graphical production control and reporting system. Reconciliation procedures and results are explained, illustrating the success of geostatistical methods, as a risk management tool, in both ore reserves and production grade control.

The purpose and current practice of cable trusses in underground coal mines is briefly outlined and details of various cable truss designs are presented. The main part of the paper describes the in-situ performance of cable trusses installed as secondary supports in gateroads and recovery roads of longwall coalfaces. The performance analysis is based on the results of in-situ monitoring carried out at a number of sites at two underground coal mines within Australia. Truss performance has been assessed as load developed in relation to roof convergence, face position and time. Additionally, the influence of strata conditions, installation pattern/density, roadway layout and geometry have been taken into account. An analytical model has been developed to predict truss loads. The principal variables are listed and the basis of the model is described. Based upon behaviour observed in the field the model has been progressively upgraded and validated against measured performance. Guidelines on truss performance and factors which influence it are presented and the implications of these to the use of cable trusses is discussed. Possible methods for improving truss performance in certain strata conditions are outlined and some comments are made on the value of cable trussing compared to cable bolting in these Situations.

Techniques appropriate to petrographic image analysis are being developed using digitized backscatter electron images of well characterized mineral assemblages obtained from a Cameca scanning electron microprobe. Emphasis is on developing descriptors for size, shape and association of mineral grains as these all convey important information concerning the nature of rocks and the processes that have operated upon them. Processes, for example, that could indicate the proximity of mineralization. For convenience, the work is being carried out on the PDP11/73 host computer of the electron micropt be, although it is recongnized that such a multi-user environment is not appropriate for practical image analysis. The eventual aim is to develop a low-cost microcomputer-based package for quantitative description of mineral textures and rock fabrics as an objective aid to the petrographic analysis of ores and host rocks.

The Mutooroo copper mine is one of a number of deposits that have been evaluated by Adelaide and Wallaroo Fertilizers Ltd as a source of feed for the production of high- purity copper oxide at their Burra plant. For this deposit, the technique of solution mining or in-situ leaching appeared ideal. The Mutooroo production circuit and the results of the process optimization and environmental monitoring programmes are outlined. At the end of the experimental period described here, the production liquor typically contained I g/litre copper, yield- ing in excess of 5 t/month of cement product containing about 80 per cent copper. The environmental monitoring programme provided clear evidence that there had been no un- acceptable alteration to the properties of the groundwater in the country rock surround- ing the mineralized zone. It is anticipated that the experience gained at Mutooroo will be of considerable help in the development of other solution mining operations.

Three aspects of rock mechanics, namely, in-situ stress estimation by acoustic emission (AE) method, strength of rock mass and role of chemicals to reduce the strength are covered. It is possible to detect the previously applied maximum stress by stressing a rock specimen to the point where there is a substantial increase in AE activity. This is known as Kaiser effect. From the AE signatures in the second and subsequent loadings, AE take-off point was identified more easily than in the first loading. In determining the compressive strength of rock mass, two factors have to be considered, namely, the size effect on the compressive strength of intact rock and the effect of discontinuities on the compressive strength of rock mass. Although a modified Bieniawski criterion gives best agreement with the triaxial test data, modifications have been suggested to Hoek-Brown criterion due to its popularity. It is possible to reduce the tensile strength of sandstone by saturating it with weak chemical solutions made with dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, polyethylene oxide and aluminium chloride by up to 30%. In the case of compressive strength, there is no appreciable effect. The possible explanation is that the chemical solutions produce an effect on the strength of sandstone only when the failure mechanism is dominated by tensile mode.
