Initial coal production at Ulan was solely from underground mines. A significant increase in demand for steaming coal in the late 1970's emphasised the need to further expand production and led to the development of the open cut mine which commenced commercial production in June, 1982.During the initial stages of mine planning, feasibility and cost studies were undertaken to determine the most suitable method for coal haulage from the pit. The comparison between a conventional truck haulage system and an in-pit crushing system using a mobile crusher and moveable belt conveyor haulage confirmed that the mobile crusher and conveyor system was superior in every respect for the Ulan mining operations.Technical features and design parameters for the major items of equipment are outlined as well as operating, manning and performance assessments. Minor equipment problems were encountered during initial operation but these have since beenrectified and the plant is now capable of exceeding the design production. Maintenance and energy costs are considerably lower than originally estimated and production efficiencies are continually improving as operators develop new techniques and procedures in the handling of the equipment.

In Japan, evaluation of rock mass is crucial in mountain tunnels that are constructed using the NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method) to determine the support pattern that in turns determine the final support structure of the tunnel. The current evaluation method is highly dependent on the observations of on-site expert engineers that grades the rock mass in four levels across nine criteria: A. Condition of tunnel face. B. Condition of excavated surface. C. Compressive rock strength. D. Weathering. E. Spacing of discontinuity. F. Condition of discontinuity. G. Orientation of discontinuity. H. Spring water. I. Water degradation. However, in recent years, the number of said experts are decreasing rapidly due to labour shortage caused mainly by an aging population and declining birth rates. This is one of the biggest challenges that the construction sector currently faces, and this may affect the efficiency of tunnel construction projects in the future. Thus, this study proposes the implementation of a deep learning tool called the convolutional neural network (CNN) to quantitatively evaluate rock fractures on tunnel face. In addition, Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) is applied to visualise CNN, as well as verify the applicability of CNN to the evaluation of rock fractures. In other words, by creating heat maps of tunnel face images, CNN is utilised to evaluate rock mass in categories that are associated with discontinuities. The CNN model is most accurate when six convolution layers, four pooling layers, and three dense layers are used. This yields an accuracy of 75.0~88.0 per cent. Thus, the CNN model is verified to be feasible method to evaluate rock fractures.

The considerations which led to the decision to_ install discs at the Dampier Pellet Plant of Hamer ley Iron Pty. Ltd. are described. Initial testwork showed that the ore could be ground dry in open circuit to a Blaine index of 2500 cm2/g and that it pelletized readily. The various design criteria including diameter, slope, speed, motor size, depth of sidewall, feed point and water spray location were then determined. Plant performance after commissioning is described including the various problems encountered and the modifications since carried out to overcome them. The main problem was quickly identified as disc feed rate control. Various bin and bin feeder modifications were tried to overcome the effects of the fluidising characteristics of the dry ground ore. Other factors found to affect disc operation are ore size distribution, additives and operator competence.

Maximising ore tonnage at a selected target grade requires that appropriate ore identification criteria be established. Iron ore mining block models may consist of many millions of estimated blocks, each block corresponding to the selective mining unit (SMU), with grade interpolated from drill hole data. Each block can be considered as a potential ore candidate. Analysis of such a huge database can require large computational resources, especially for sensitivity analysis requiring multiple computations. However, an alternative streamlined approach is possible, where the data are compressed to an appropriately smaller and representative subset. The consequent data reduction not only makes it feasible to consider the simultaneous analysis of multiple pits but also considerably speeds up computation, enabling sensitivity analysis of the potential ore tonnage as a function of the required grade. Ore identification criteria can be successfully established using appropriately chosen reduced data comprising less than one per cent of the blocks. The ore identified is virtually indistinguishable in tonnage and grade from the ore that would be selected using the entire block model.Two methods of data reduction are tested: sampling (using a proportion of unaltered blocks) and binning (consolidating groups of blocks to a single average grade). The source blocks are first sorted (such as by location, analyte grade, principal component score, random order or value) before sampling or binning. In this study, the sorting options considered were by location and Fe grade. The effectiveness of each method was evaluated using the block model subsets to select the maximum tonnage of ore at a specified target grade. Block model data from an anonymous Pilbara iron ore project with about one million blocks averaging 1.132 kt were used. The blocks are from multiple resource models, to be blended to a single product. Sampling is shown to be superior to binning because sampling preserves the full variability while binning, although matching the mean block grades reduces their variability.It was found that the appropriately sampled data sets (sorted by location) gave results virtually identical to the results for the full data set, even when the samples comprised less than one per cent of the original blocks. The reduction in computer time to identify maximum tonnage at a specified grade was approximately proportional to the sample percentage. The increase in computation speed greatly facilitated sensitivity analysis. A sampled data set of one-eighth the total block model was used to investigate the effects of changing each of the component grades around the original grade specification. The results of this sensitivity analysis are discussed, and illustrate the potential benefit of carrying out sensitivity analysis in determining feasible and marketable product grades.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2015. Blasting is one of the most commonly used strategies for excavation in civil and mining engineering. Yet blasting can also bring along such undesirable effects as ground vibrations and soil disturbance. Numerical analysis is a powerful tool for estimating the effects of blasting and improving blasting design. In this research, a constitutive model for sand is proposed for the numerical analysis of blast-induced ground motions and wave propagation in soil mass. In the model, three model surfaces, ie the critical surface, the dilatancy surface and the bounding surface, are defined following the bounding surface hypoplasticity framework. The strain rate is included explicitly into the model formulations so that the proposed model is valid under high strain rate loadings caused by blast-induced vibrations. This paper examines the use of the FrothSim flotation simulator to improve the performance of an industrial column flotation cell. The performance of an industrial retreat column cell is simulated, and, from the discrepancies between the simulated and experimental results, a problem with the wash water distribution is postulated. The scientific reason for the reduced performance with uneven wash water addition is described in detail. Further simulations indicated the potential for improvement with an even wash water distribution, resulting in both improved performance and reduced wash water usage. The simulated uneven wash water distribution was confirmed industrially, and the headers were redesigned and installed. A sampling campaign to compare the performance before and after the modifications showed that the flotation performance was improved dramatically, with a statistically significant decrease in gangue recovery, without a commensurate reduction in valuable mineral recovery.

An economic block cave is dependent to the characteristics of the rock mass at stages of caving. These are cave initiation, propagation and ore flow. In this research, the rock engineering system (RES), first established by Hudson (1992) to solve complex rock engineering problems, is introduced and verified against the well-established caving parameters established by Laubscher. There are two types of factors influencing caving and these are natural (cannot be controlled) and induced (operator controlled). A RES based interaction matrix is developed by determining the rating parameters required to reproduce the caving database using Laubscher’s caving parameters. This provides the relative importance of the parameters in the interaction matrix. After discussing the rock mass caving process and identifying all the effective parameters, an interaction matrix is introduced to study the cave initiation of rock masses. The expert-semi-quantitative (ESQ) coding method is utilised to assign the numerical value to each parameter’s interaction. Thereafter, the interaction intensity and dominance of each factor in the system is determined to classify these factors. Finally, all the parameters affecting caving operation and their weights on the RES system are identified. This new application of RES in block caving is very efficient and useful for any stage of caving studies and helps experts to make decisions more accurately.CITATION:Mohammad Khani, M, 2016. The potential for iron ore in the Central African Archean belts has received much less attention by comparison to their equivalents in other cratonic regions of West Africa, South Africa, Australia and Brazil. Historically, iron ore is known to occur in South Cameroon and North Gabon with significant iron ore deposits (eg Mbalam in Cameroon, Avima in the Republic of Congo, Minkébé, Bélinga and Boka-boka in Gabon), having been the subject of geological exploration programs carried out by government institutions and exploration companies. Although the presence of strong aeromagnetic anomalies, undeniably related to the presence of greenstone belt formations, has been recognised, this study is the first attempt to assess the potential of banded iron formations (BIF) in the Northern part of the Gabonese Republic in the region between Minvoul and Minkébé (>10.000 km2). Deep lateritic weathering, inaccessible equatorial rain forest and high operational costs are some of the reasons why only limited exploration has been undertaken in the area. This work aims to improve the geological knowledge and to highlight the potential for iron ore of the eastern margin of the Ntem Complex units dated between 3.3–2.7 Ga. Field work showed a series of mafic rocks (amphibolite, anorthosite and gabbro), schist and BIF (described as itabirites in neighbouring areas). Samples from Minvoul BIF showed an extensive and deep weathering to powdery hematite revealing the presence, in thin sections, of iron oxides including magnetite, hematite and martite, primary and secondary quartz, garnet, hornblende, anthophyllite, cummingtonite and epidote. Mineral assemblages and coarse grain size suggest a metamorphic grade ranging from medium to upper amphibolite facies. The existence of known economic iron ore deposits in neighbouring regions combined with an extensive weathering enrichment process are promising factors for potential iron ore discovery in this remote area.

Laboratory leach tests of Nabarlek uranium ore carried out by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission to compare the effectiveness of Caro's Acid1 (permonosulphuric acid) as an alternative oxident to pyrolusite indicated reduced acid consumption in leaching and lime savings in neutralisation of tailings liquors when using Caro's Acid. Interox Chemicals Pty. Ltd. arranged a plant trial for Caro's Acid at Queensland Mines Nabarlek Plant. The trial confirmed that significant savings in acid and lime can be achieved under plant conditions. Plant operations also demonstrated improved redox potential control was possible using Caro's Acid.

Myuna Colliery long term ventilation requirements were included as part of the overall planning of colliery construction and underground development. Ventilation, during the simultaneous sinking of two drifts and the downcast shaft, was accomplished by established methods of ducted exhaust and blower fans. Drivages for the 3 seam interconnections of shaft and drifts were ventilated by extension and duplication of the exhaust systems. Ventilation, for the below seam extension of the belt drift, construction of between seam and below seam bins, and the completion of a circular between seam drift, required a step by step changeover to a temporary main ventilation exhaust fan mounted adjacent to the top of the completed downcast shaft. The second, permanent upcast, shaft was commenced and colliery production started one seam at a time, using the transport drift, while the underground bins, belt and between seam drifts were completed. The uocast shaft was completed and a connection made in the upper seam, completing all contract mining and allowing the main fan to be erected. Tahmoor Mine is located in the southern Sydney Basin 80km south-west of Sydney and produces 1.2 MT of Bulli Coal annually. Bord and pillar methods used to date will be supplemented by a longwall system. Difficult roof conditions have been experienced since mining began in 1979. A dominantly horizontal stressfield promotes shear failure in the thinly interbedded roof sequence of shales, laminites, siltstones and fine sandstones. General roof conditions and failure characteristics are related to the angle between the roadway direction and the principal horizontal stress direction. The apparent stressfield changes direction, magnitude and the ratio of principal horizontal components across the mine workings in response to both in situ and mining induced causes. Initial roof support of 5 x 2.1 m bolts per W-strap at in intervals, with mesh, was upgraded to include RSJ's in order to support areas of failed roof. This support system was inefficient and costly. A third system of support emphasizes roof reinforcement with full resin encapsulation of 2.1 m bolts in W-straps. The number of bolts per strap (6-8), extra butterfly straps and bolts, and W-strap spacing is determined for each area by expected roof and stress conditions. Intersections are pre-bolted and ribs are supported in some areas. Pillar dimensions, order of drivage and roadway width have each been altered to improve roof control. The intensity of roof deformation at the face varies from panel to panel and causes development rates to decrease to 30% of the maximum. 1. Manager, Tahmoor Mine, Tahmoor, N.S.W. 2. Roof conditions in each area of the mine are characterised and then projected to future development areas based on the relationship between stressfield orientation, relative roadway direction and face conditions. The disposal of tailings has become a greater issue due to the changing economics of mineral extraction. The processing of lower grade deposits and tougher environmental regulations has led to the selection process for tailings disposal options becoming more complicated. Current selection methods are too time consuming or too easily manipulated for inexperienced users to use successfully. This paper examines a different method for the initial selection of a tailings disposal system, using a numerical system that was introduced into the mining method selection field. The numerical method system was compiled by reviewing previous work done on the positive and negative aspects of the tailings disposal methods used by the coal and metallurgical mining industries. Assessing the common trends and design aspects of each of the methods was undertaken and a ranking was designed to explain how well suited the tailings disposal methods are to a situation. The tool successfully analysed sites using common data to indicate methods for disposal that would have provided minimal technical problems, low environmental risk and been practically possible. The tool also proved successful in identifying critical areas that would need further investigation. This new system was tested on some disaster case studies from around the world in order to show that it could have successfully selected a different method for tailings disposal that would have prevented the disaster.

The Lady Loretta lead-zinc-silver mineral isation of north-west Queensland was discovered first by Placer geologists in 1968 as a result of a geochemical soil survey. The stratigraphic position, mineralisation and rock associations of the deposit are very similar to those of the Mount Isa lead-zinc-silver orebodies. Aspects of the exploration history, geo- chemistry and structural geology of the Lady Loretta deposit, are discussed. A geometric model of the Ore Horizon is given.

The City of KalgoorlieBoulder is situated approximately 600 kilometres to the east of Perth, and as the major regional centre of the Eastern Goldfields, supporting a population of approximately 25 000. The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines in 1989 brought the existing operating entities adjacent to the city under common ownership and management. The Joint Venturers forming the management company are Homestake Gold of Australia and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (a Normandy/Poseidon company).This traditional underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding 40.5 million ounces of gold ore with an average head grade of TEN grams per tonne. Historically the heart of the operation has been the famous Golden We located on the Eastern perimeter of the city, in the area known as Fimiston. The other significant operations that form KCGM are the Mt Percy Open Pit and the Mt Charlotte Underground Operation.

The Sepon district in Lao PDR contains 1.8 Mt of JORC (2012) compliant contained Cu resources in addition to >4.5 Moz of Carlin-like Au in a Palaeozoic sedimentary package. The Cu deposits are proximal to an EW lineament of Permian rhyodacite porphyry (RDP) intrusive centres that are characterised by intense barren quartz stockworks. The Khanong deposit (42 Mt at 3.0 per cent Cu mineral inventory) is a carbonate replacement intermediate sulfidation deposit verging on a high sulfidation environment, where abundant pyrite, copper sulfides (chalcopyrite, bornite, trace enargite), copper sulfosalts (including tennantite – tetrahedrite, colusite), and base metal sulfides (sphalerite and galena) have replaced low dipping dolomite and limestone layers, forming a manto-style orebody fed by steep dipping intensely silica-pyrite altered structures. The Thengkham deposits (54 Mt at 1.5 per cent Cu) are composed of prograde skarns (garnet, clinopyroxene) and mineralised retrograde skarns (chlorite, magnetite, hematite, epidote, sericite, talc, serpentine, carbonates, sulfides) which are irregularly and semi-continuously distributed around an elongate 4 km long intrusive centre. Thengkham and Khanong have been strongly supergene enriched, forming secondary chalcocite breccias and exotic malachite zones.The Carlin-like Au deposits display a range of stratigraphic and structural controls and lie outboard of the Cu deposits. Similar structural controls, alteration assemblages and trace mineralogies suggest that gold and copper mineralisation are temporally and genetically related. The project opportunity exists because of on-going consumption growth for refined zinc metal, technological, environmental and economic obsolescence of existing zinc processing plants, and a prolonged ædroughtÆ of new zinc processing capacity under construction. The Project will utilise proven technology developed by KZC at the Onsan refinery in Korea. The Townsville Refinery has been designed to be the most environmentally-friendly zinc refinery in the world, and in particular to resolve the issue of secure, long term treatment of the ironbearing content of the zinc raw materials.

Utilisation of modern 3D visualisation tools, can improve our ability to correlate between different datasets, and thus to produce more accurate geological models. Here, we present an application of such techniques to the Century Zinc Deposit, northwestern Queensland, Australia. This stratiform orebody is the second largest Zn resource in the world (167.5 Mt at 8.2 per cent Zn, 1.2 per cent Pb, and 33 g/t Ag). It is hosted in the Page Creek Syncline affecting Mesoproterozoic shales and siltstones of the Wide Supersequence of the Isa Superbasin. As in other deposits, (eg McArthur River, Lady Loretta, George Fisher and Dugald River), the mineralised sequence is bound by an important regional structure, the Termite Range Fault, which partly intersects the deposit along its Eastern side. This fault is thought have been active during sedimentation and probably also during mineralisation of the lowest part of the Wide Supersequence. The anastomosing geometry of this fault system and crosscutting relationships with other NE trending structures indicate that it was reactivated several times from Mesoproterozoic to at least late Devonian times (>1000 million years in total); as a result, the ore sequence is subdivided into several fault blocks.Using two different computer modeling packages (GOCAD and 3ds max), we have reconstructed and restored the stratigraphic horizon with the highest Zn content, realised a series of isopach maps for each mine scale stratigraphic unit, plotted the three-dimensional distribution of Zn, Pb, Ag, Fe and SiO2, and have begun to evaluate the degree of correlation between thickness changes and sulphide zoning. With this approach it is possible to better understand the timing of mineralisation from a genetic perspective, because the origins of the orebody are controversial. Three-dimensional reconstruction is a vital tool for identification of syn-sedimentary and post-sedimentary fault activity. In conjunction with sulphide precipitation, these are factors that greatly influence the stratigraphic thickness distribution. Post-sedimentary deformation can be recognised directly by core logging and pit mapping, but the effect of tectonic movements during sedimentation (growth faults in particular), that represents a substantial variable when we attempt to reconstruct basin evolution, is difficult to evaluate without this methodology. The 3D models improve our understanding of the local basin architecture, identifying similar grade characteristics at different structural levels and thus suggesting that much faulting and folding are post-mineralisation events. In addition, we identified several growth faults adjacent to thickened layers, representing two possible sedimentary depocentres. These thicker domains apparently relate to the highest Pb content. If further analysis of rocks, thickness and grade distributions support this preliminary correlation, then a syn-sedimentary model for mineralisation might be applied, and would contrast with the sub-surface model for mineralisation of Broadbent et al (1998).
