Understanding and quantifying residual risk is the key to the successful closure and rehabilitation of mines. An important aspect of residual risk is predicting the long-term chemistry of mine water and the long-term geochemical stability of mining wastes. This requires updating the characterisation data for mine wastes and monitoring mine drainage throughout the life-of-mine. The intrinsic properties of waste materials (ie the geology, mineralogy and the weathering processes, which in turn depend on the local climate and water balance in a waste storage facility) are the fundamental controlling factors of residual risk. In this paper, case studies of coal and metalliferous mines are used to discuss the definition of residual risk for a range of waste storage facilities and to highlight the benefits and limitations of current geochemical methods in predicting and quantifying residual risk. Open pit/underground mining and mineral processing can generate large amounts of waste that contains sulfide-type minerals such as pyrite (FeS2), and it can produce acid mine drainage (AMD) when exposed to oxygen and water. This highly acidic wastewater contains heavy metals and this is one of the most serious environmental issues after mining operations taking several decades to completely remediate with high costs. For green mining, the present study focused on the development of a recovery technique for gold from an eco-friendly solvent, thiosulfate, by utilising mine wastes, tailings. First, gold recovery experiments in ammonium thiosulfate system were carried out using model samples representatively present in tailings (ie SiO2, Al2O3, FeS2, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4). The results showed that gold recoveries were negligible when using Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4 while pyrite shows a recovery efficiency three-fold as high as the maximum recovery efficiency when using others. Subsequently, the study also addressed the identification of the recovery mechanisms and post-recover process. The results indicate that tailings can be sufficiently utilised for gold recovery in the hydrometallurgy process and a further sustainable process can be established.

Haymont (2012) notes that in parts of Australia significant areas of mining disturbance cannot be relinquished. In Queensland it has been estimated that by 2010, just 0.3 per cent 507 ha of mining disturbance had been rehabilitated to the regulator’s satisfaction (Short, 2015).One reason for this poor record is the presence of inappropriate, unachievable or unmeasurable rehabilitation targets (Glenn et al, 2014; Butler, Anderson and Sexton, 2015). In the authors’ experience in Queensland many mature operations have licence conditions that hinder the achievement of sustainable outcomes or prevent successful validation of rehabilitation success. This creates a lack of certainty for industry and a lack of confidence in the community that the sector can deliver good rehabilitation outcomes (Short, 2015).This extended abstract presents a framework approach that has been applied at two contrasting operations. Without the changes presented, the goal of progressive rehabilitation certification, reduction in financial assurance (FA) and a path to surrender at these sites would have been impossible. The success of the Australian mining industry depends on the quality of its skills. High quality skills supported by a culture which demands success lead to innovations, good practices and prosperity. Average skills lead inevitably to mediocrity. Universities play an essential role in the development and use of skills but the crucial industry-university links have been subordinated to conventional academic interests in training mining and processing engineers. It is only in the area of post-graduate research degrees which are oriented towards the mineral industry that Australia can claim world leadership. Deficiencies are not due to lack of training resources, they are due to inadequate utilisation of the resources that are available. Australia can and should have the world's best mineral engineering school, with a branch in Asia where many of its customers are and close ties with South America where some of its production operations will be. Some steps which might be taken to achieve this are proposed.

The Port of Port Hedland is the largest bulk export terminal in the world and is one of Australia’s most important pieces of economic infrastructure. BHP is the largest Port user to support the export of iron ore products from mines located within the Pilbara region of Western Australia (WA). BHP’s priority is the safety and well-being of its workforce and the communities where it operates. In a recent regulatory application to increase export capacity, BHP committed to the deployment of wind fences to reduce wind erosion from stockpiled ore. Wind erosion from stockpiles was identified through inverse modelling as the most significant dust source compared to other sources such as stackers, reclaimers, shiploaders and transfer stations. The primary cause of dust emissions from stockpiles is dust lift-off during high wind conditions. BHP proposed the installation of wind fences across its Port Hedland operations, targeted at reducing emissions from wind dependent sources, primarily stockpiles, by reducing the wind speed downwind of the wind fence. Modelling predicts that installation of the wind fence will significantly reduce emissions from stockpiles, particularly at BHP’s western operations (Finucane Island). To be effective in shielding stockyards and reducing wind speeds, the wind fences are located upwind and as close as practical to the open stockyards. BHP’s wind fence design incorporates learnings from other existing installations and has been tailored for Port Hedland’s cyclonic conditions. The wind fence will be higher than the stockpile height, with a mesh porosity of approximately 50 per cent. The mesh porosity allows some of the wind to pass through the mesh. This reduces the wind turbulence downstream of the wind fence, as opposed to a solid wind fence, which increases downwind turbulence, resulting in increased dust.

RIG Technologies has developed new technology that can successfully acquire high quality natural gamma ray (GR) and hole deviations, downhole while drilling, on reverse circulation drills. This technology survives the hostile downhole environment with shocks of between 400–2500 g for 7– 10 days at a time. The Logging While Drilling (LWD) service eliminates the need to run in-rod surveys, either by the driller or by wireline trucks and crews. This time saving is in the middle of the drilling process, thus enabling drills to keep drilling and increase their productivity. Additional to the natural GR and directional survey, the downhole tool is equipped with sensors to measure the downhole dynamic response of the drilling system providing insights into rock hardness, density and potentially clay types. These parameters have never been acquired behind the hammer before and coupled with surface measurements from the drills themselves, form a rich data set for trainable machine learning algorithms shortening the time to receive advanced geophysical answer products from sometimes months, to live feeds directly from drills (Hopper, 2019). Alive, high speed, two-way data link between surface data acquisition systems and downhole geophysics tools has been established and incorporates calibrated surface measurements of dynamic forces directly on the drill string to match up with those measured downhole. Receiving live streams of natural GR and hole deviation surveys as the drill is drilling allows true remote decisionmaking with live data available anywhere in the world. The combined data from surface and downhole dynamics builds a data set that could begin to enable true optimisation of autonomous drilling processes.

The optimisation of an open pit mine can be broadly split into two stages, the first being the ultimate pit optimisation (and subsequent stage designs), and the second being schedule optimisation. Macroeconomic uncertainty clearly impacts on both however interrelationships do also exist. Generally, the opportunity exists for the ultimate pit to be revised during each planning cycle, however when this reprieve is removed the uncertainty for the underlying business increases. As one example, the introduction of an in-pit waste dump can be seen to significantly limit the option to revise the ultimate pit. When in this situation there are two potential risks that present: (i) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is optimistic, and too large of a pit is selected resulting in waste being mined which uncovers material not of a significant value to deliver a profit; (ii) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is pessimistic, too small of an ultimate pit is selected, and ore of realisable economic value left behind. After a short presentation of the Division of Mining at the Royal Insti- tute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, the author presents some of-the fill research carried out at the Division. Literature surveys and testing methods and equipment are described. The use of flocculants' in hydraulic filling has been tested both in laboratory and in mines and the results are very promi- sing. Finally compressibility investi- gations and some finite element calcu- lations are presented.

Variable bench heights, interaction with underground workings and a steeply dipping orebody are challenges faced daily by geologists at Xstrata Zinc’s Black Star Open Cut (BSOC) Zinc/Lead/Silver mine in Mount Isa, Queensland.BSOC has been in operation since late 2004 and was developed to extract the surface extents of the Zn/Pb/Ag mineralisation mined in the underground lead mine. To date many large scale stopes and extensive development drives have been intersected and successfully mined. The stratigraphically hosted orebodies strike in a north-north westerly direction, dipping ~75° west. Ore production from the pit is currently at 4.5 Mt/a.Historically, sampling was conducted using a multiple spear technique from blasthole cuttings. This method proved to be relatively reliable when blasting benches at a consistent height, but a requirement to vary bench heights to safely collapse and then mine through underground workings reduced sample representivity to unacceptable levels.The purchase and commissioning of a production rig which had been converted for reverse circulation (RC) has allowed for the flexibility of a small rig, with the capacity to easily drill 48 m holes while ensuring sample quality. Sample quality is not the only benefit of introducing RC grade control. By collecting grade control data well in advance, informed decisions can be made by planning, drill and blast and mining departments weeks beforehand, rather than hours before firing. Additionally, seeking operational value to offset higher drilling costs has proved positive with benefits including increased confidence in orebody wireframes, accurate tonnage and grade for proceeding five benches along with the ability to representatively test metallurgical response on a tight grid spacing.

Sulphides of Cu, Pb, and Zn occur in quartz veins associated with a quartz monzodiorite stock at Gunung Limbung, West Java. The mineralization was polyphase and occurred at depths of less than lkm. Wall- rock alteration is extensive and typically consists of an outer zone of propylitization and an inner zone of potassic (K-feldspar- rich) alteration. Sporadic argillic altera- tion is probably of supergene origin. A variety of elements were mobilised during hydrothermal alteration and Ba in particular shows mared enrichments in the potassic zone. Fluid inclusions in the vein quartz indicate that temperatures of mineralization were within the range 250-3900C and that two fluids with differing chemistry were involved. One fluid had high Ca/Na ratios and a low overall salinity, the other had low Ca/Na ratios and a moderate salinity. The former is probably of meteoric derivation, whilst the latter had a magmatic origin. Precipitation of the sulphides was probably brought about by mixing of these fluids.

The paper outlines the adoption and evolution of ‘sustainable development’ as a concept in tailings management practices in the mining industry over the last 30 years. Over 500 lives have been lost in tailings facility accidents since World War 2. The paper outlines commonalities in many of these accidents, particularly the role of excess water. It considers the role effective tailings management can play in enhancing the social acceptability of mining in the future.Tailings management is a major operating cost at many mines while the cost of successfully closing tailings facilities is also very high. Current tailings management practices in the industry are outlined. The technical and engineering challenges of reducing potential risks associated with tailings by reducing water entrainment are described. The successful development of practical techniques to better manage tailings and reduce water consumption and wastage are described. For example, water removal in the alumina industry to produce a paste for dry stacking is now a reality.The future adoption of these new risk reducing techniques by the industry is discussed and the implications of the adoption or non-adoption of these techniques on the industry’s future ‘social licence’ is considered.

The problem of recovery of cobalt products from poorly oxidised nickel ores (Kempirsaisk deposit) and pyrite concentrates with a low content of cobalt (Sokolovsk-Sarbaisky deposit) has not been solved to the present time in Kazakstan. The balance reserves of nickel ore of the Kempirsaisky deposit make up more than 35 million tons with a nickel content of 1.13 per cent and cobalt content of 0.05 per cent; besides there are 110 millions tons of out-balance ores (Anon, 1995). In a tailing dump of Sokolovsk-Sarbaisk Mining and Productional Association more than 320 million tons of tailings of wet magnetic separation have accumulated, which contain 7.2 per cent of sulphur, 0.022 per cent of cobalt, 0.012 per cent of nickel, 0.094 per cent of copper, 0.079 per cent of zinc, 16.45 per cent of iron, and from which a high quality pyrite concentrate car) he separated through flotation, containing 48 - 50 per cent of sulphur, 44.15 per cent of iron, 0.141 per cent of cobalt, 0.07 per cent of nickel, and 0.10 per cent of copper. The well-known technological flow charts for cobalt and nickel recovery from the tailings of sulphide-magnetite ores dressing (to give pyrite concentrate) and from oxidised nickel ores, are not profitable at the existing prices for metals, but are not worthless and require significant capital investments for the realisation of their value. The flow chart `sulphate roasting - leaching - solution processing' is used widely for combined processing of cobalt-containing pyrite ores and concentrates.

This paper describes how water is being planned, managed and used in Queensland as both a precious natural resource, vital for healthy ecosystems, and as a valuable tradeable commodity, necessary to secure economic prosperity. Queensland has been progressively implementing a planned package of water industry improvements agreed by the Council of Australia Governments in 1994. The Water Act 2000 provides the legislative basis for implementing the COAG water reform framework in Queensland and sets out statutory water planning processes. A Water Resource Plan (WRP) is a strategic document that specifies water sharing and environmental flow outcomes across a whole catchment over a period of up to ten years. A Resource Operations Plan (ROP) sets out the details of implementing a WRP, including environmental flow rules, establishment of tradeable water allocations that are separate from land, rules for water trading, rules for operating water infrastructure, arrangements for the release of any unallocated water identified in the WRP, and requirements for monitoring and reporting. Water Resource Planning and Resource Operations Planning are progressing in priority catchments and aquifers across the State. Ways to obtain a water entitlement now depend on whether a WRP and/or a ROP exist in a particular catchment. Water trading provides for the buying and selling of water entitlements on a permanent basis where permitted under a ROP. Details of tradeable water allocations are securely registered on the Water Allocations Register, which is similar to a land titles register. Leasing and temporary transfers of water entitlements are also possible. Water brokers are emerging to facilitate water trading which aims to improve water use efficiency and move water to higher value uses. Queensland is leading the way in the implementation of the COAG water reform framework and the pursuit of sustainable water resource management. The StateÆs progress in this regard is increasing certainty for water users, while ensuring that considerations of equity amongst existing and future users and amongst various uses, as well as considerations of ecological sustainability and the wider community, are all taken into account. The mining sector stands to benefit substantially from these new approaches to planning, managing and using this precious resource.

This presentation is a 20 minute snippet of my professional career, and my progression in the mining industry, from a lazy uni student to an up-and-coming blast engineer in the middle of a mining boom.My name is Daniel Hepburn and I am a blasting engineer for Orica Mining Services. I graduated from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), in Melbourne in 2003. I completed both of my final year projects with Orica Quarry Services and was offered an assistant shotfiring job, which I accepted and worked for eight months. Having missed the cut-off date for the Orica graduate program, I planned to work with Quarry Services until the following year where I hoped my marks and the experiences I had gained would secure a graduate position. I didnÆt have to wait long, as in August of that year, I was offered (and I accepted) a graduate position in Perth as a technical services engineer for Orica Mining Services. The Orica graduate program is based over two years, and consists of real roles from day one; however, there is also opportunity to fast track the program for high performers. There is a structured rotation, from site to site, interstate or even international if you are so inclined. This includes the backpacker program, which allows graduates to experience the Orica culture in countries of their choice. There are also opportunities to try cross-functional roles in the different Market segments within Orica. I was lucky in that I knew what I wanted to do and where I wanted to work, so I stayed in Perth for my entire graduate program. I was also lucky enough to be fast tracked and finished my graduate program in 15 months. At the end of 2005 I accepted a position as an open cut blasting engineer based in Perth and even in such a short period of time I have already completed a number of major accomplishments. The East West Link road tunnels are proposed to provide a connection between the CityLink toll road and the Eastern Freeway north of the Melbourne CBD. The alignment passes from Moonee Ponds valley beneath the Upfield Line railway cutting, Royal Park, the historic Melbourne Cemetery and beneath Alexander Parade rising to an eastern portal at Hoddle Street. The western (Royal Park) part of the alignment passes through the folded and faulted Silurian Melbourne Formation, which has been subjected to deep weathering since the Triassic.The Melbourne Formation in the Royal Park area is mainly characterised by interbedded sequences of siltstone and fine-grained sandstone. The beds are often graded and a clear boundary between the siltstone and fine-grained sandstone rock can be difficult to distinguish. Variation in lithology and the presence of structural geological features such as folds and faults have resulted in an irregular weathering profile within the Silurian rock; nonetheless the formation typically becomes less weathered with depth.Due to difficulties in obtaining reliable laboratory strength and stiffness relationships with weathering grade, in situ testing methods such as downhole shear wave velocity and high-quality pressuremeter testing are a useful aid to assessing appropriate geotechnical parameters for design.This paper presents an analysis of the variation in shear modulus of the Melbourne Formation, determined at small-strain (from downhole seismic data) and at ‘engineering scale’ strain (from pressuremeter tests) for extremely weathered (XW), highly weathered (HW) and moderately weathered (MW) rock. Estimates of small strain shear modulus (Go) obtained a range between 400 to 3400 MPa for these weathering grades. By comparison against the pressuremeter test data, reduction factors to be applied to these Go values to estimate shear moduli at engineering strain levels typically range between 0.10 and 0.35.The downhole geophysics undertaken in the Royal Park boreholes also suggests that there is an inversion in velocity between approximately 15 and 27?m depth below the top of the formation. This is thought to be related to the effects deep Plio-Pleistocene weathering, iron cementation of joints and increasing frequency of ‘non-healed’ joints in the transition from MW to slightly weathered (SW) rock.CITATION:Macklin, S, Schult, M, Terzic, Z and Chu, D, 2014. In the present work, the microstructure and mechanical properties of structural mortar from glass insulators were studied by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, microhardness and compression testings. The investigated glass insulators were manufactured between the 1960 and 1990 years and had been used in 230 kV transmission lines. The results evidenced that the structural mortar of glass insulator was replaced from Portland to aluminous cement along the years. The crystalline phases of the mortar were identified and mechanical properties were correlated.

The Australian Mineral Industry's growth in the last two decades is directly related to the skill and experience of its consultants in mining, metallurgy, geology, finance, management, marketing, and engineering. The role of mining consultants needs to be re-examined, so that the quality of the service they deliver will continue to be adequate for the 1990's. One means of this evaluation is by examining Case Studies in the strategies and difficulties of developing contract and entrepreneurial research.
