This brief overview of the history of Brown Coal mining in Victoria is a luncheon presentation -I do not intend to make it indigestible with extensive listings of resources or production. There is a vast pantry of collated historical records and of vari- ous predictive studies available for the enquired with a hearty digestion. A gourmet collation is provided in The Aus IMM Monograph No 11 published in 1984 entitled "Victoria's Brown Coal-A HUGE FORTUNE IN CHANCERY", currently still on offer by the Institute and available at a bargain price in the foyer at this conference. Monograph No 11 also provides a feast of excellent references on the theme of Victorian Brown Coal assembled by the several contributors. In contrast, my presentation paper is a fast-food service, extracts from the printed paper only-you have no choice-you "get what you get" and in small quantity. The disposal of dewatered coalmine tailings and coarse reject within spoil piles is gaining popularity as a means of eliminating separate surface tailings storage facilities or dams. The contrasting characteristics of coalmine spoil, coarse reject and tailings are somewhat complimentary, making the co-disposal of dewatered tailings within spoil piles geotechnically feasible and environmentally attractive. However, the impacts of mixing plant rejects within spoil piles are not well understood; in particular, the effects of water draining from the mixed plant rejects on the moisture content of the surrounding spoil. Changes in moisture content can cause additional collapse and degradation settlements of the spoil pile. A series of laboratory tests has been undertaken on mixtures of dewatered coalmine tailings, coarse reject and spoil. The results of these tests have been incorporated into a spreadsheet-based settlement prediction tool to investigate the effects of incorporating mixed plant rejects on total spoil pile settlements. The Telfer concentrator, located in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia, consists of a dual train gold/copper operation processing ore from one underground and, currently, two open pit mines with differing mineralogy. The flotation circuit of each train was designed to operate in several modes depending on the feed mineralogy. The majority of ore mined at Telfer is processed in a sequential mode where copper minerals are first floated into a saleable copper concentrate followed by the flotation of an auriferous pyrite concentrate which is treated in an on-site hydrometallurgical plant (carbon-in-leach (CIL)). Gold is recovered as a gravity product within the primary grinding circuit, to the copper concentrate, and to a lesser extent, the CIL circuit.Since Telfer was re-opened, with a new concentrator, in 2004, the processing plant has struggled with poor copper concentrate grades, partially due to the excessive entrainment of non-sulfide gangue minerals in the copper flotation circuit and, more recently, due to composite copper particles produced when processing ore from a supplementary satellite pit that has not previously been processed through the new Telfer concentrator. Gold recoveries in the CIL circuit have also been below industry standard. This paper presents the implementation of recent changes made to the circuit to address these performance issues. The reconfiguration of the circuit has involved the installation of the following major equipment items: two ISAMillsÖ in ultra-fine grinding applications (one in the copper circuit and one in the pyrite circuit), two Jameson Cells to improve fine gangue rejection and a bank of 5 + Outotec TC30s to recovery copper and gold from the reground pyrite stream. Mining-induced seismicity at Junction Gold Mine became a serious operational problem in the late-1990s. Assessing the local seismic hazard is an important step in assessing the risk associated with potential rockbursting. This paper discusses the qualitative and quantitative means of assessing seismic hazard used at Junction. In qualitative hazard assessment, the role of the primary factors contributing to mining-induced seismicity and rockbursting are identified. These factors include: rock mass properties, geological structures, mine development, and stoping. A qualitative seismic hazard map has been developed considering these factors. In quantitative hazard assessment, seismic source parameters from an Integrated Seismic System are used to assess seismic hazard. The seismic source parameters found to be relevant to seismic hazard assessment at Junction are discussed.

The acid neutralisation capacity (ANC) of rock sample containing significant iron carbonates and/or reactive framboidal pyrite can be a difficult parameter to determine. Results indicated that negative ANC results can occur if reactive sulfide minerals are present; and an over-estimation of ANC will result if significant Fe rich carbonate minerals are present during industry standard ANC tests. In this paper we investigate these problems. Results showed that a significant lag period may be needed (up to 432 hours) after standard Sobek ANC type tests of siderite for the complete hydrolysis of iron released from this mineral. This even occurred with standard industry modifications that included the addition of two drops of hydrogen peroxide. In this work we use a modified Sobek test that included filtering, and thence continued hydrogen peroxide addition until there was no subsequent pH drop, followed by back titration to pH 7.0. Results indicated that the ANC for the siderite (after zero hours) was immediately comparable to the ANC determined after 432 hours lag by standard Sobek type tests; and a calculated theoretical carbonate ANC. Investigations of coal waste samples containing significant framboidal pyrite indicated that standard Sobek ANC type tests can result in negative ANC values due to the oxidation of this reactive pyrite. Because sulfide acidity is already addressed by the MPA calculation, the inclusion of sulfide acidity as part of the ANC determination is effectively biased towards acid generation and thus positive NAPP values. Negative ANC values cannot be ignored or assumed to be zero as this masks any actual ANC available within the sample, which may possibly affect AMD categorisation. This sulfide acidity can be factored out using the quantity of S in the ANC digestion liquor and knowing the non-acid generating sulfate content of the sample prior to ANC testing. Results indicated that incomplete iron hydrolysis at the completion of the Modified Sobek ANC test is not only a function of iron carbonate dissolution, but is also related to the dissolution of Fe-sulfate salts, and the oxidation of reactive sulfides such as framboidal pyrite.

Given the ever increasing quantity of construction and demolition waste (C&DW), one of the most challenging issues presently facing policymakers and public administrators in Italy concerns how to organise and manage collection and recycling and to understand whether and to what extent recycled aggregate can complement natural building aggregates in a sustainable supply mix (SSM). The paper presents the results of a research aimed at analysing energy and environmental implications of the C&DW recycling chain in the administrative territory of Provincia di Torino in northern Italy. In respect of a population of about 2.25 million inhabitants, the annual production of C&DW in the area under study is 1.8 Mt. A combined geographical information system (GIS) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model was developed, paying attention to the geographical location, land use, transportation network and avoided landfill: crucial issues for sustainable planning and management. Around 90 recycling plants were classified according to the size, typology (stationary, semi-mobile and mobile) and physical- mechanical characteristics of the recycled aggregate. Under different assumptions relevant to the delivery distance, and considering the typology and grade of recycled aggregate, as well as local availability of natural aggregates, it was possible to evaluate the geographical coverage of aggregates demand and to use LCA in order to identify and quantify energy and environmental indicators.

DCF Valuations are very important to individuals and companies involved in the mining industry. Such valuations are critical to investment decisions in relation to new and existing projects. In particular they provide fundamental information to shareholders in the event of a capital raising or takeover and to financiers supporting mining companies and projects. Also, DCF Valuations are often used to support asset carrying values in the financial statements of mining companies. This paper presents a Chartered Accountant's (CA's) perspective on the main issues to be considered in preparing, analysing and relying upon DCF methods in mineral valuations and provides some practical examples relating to key issues. The paper makes the important point that DCF methods involve making assumptions about future events and circumstances that inherently contain uncertainty which results in a valuation prepared on a DCF basis providing a range of values that are not perfect or accurate. In order that DCF valuations provide meaningful information the underlying methodology used and assumptions made must be consistent, sound and well supported. Credibility of those involved in preparing mineral valuations is vital and this paper supports the adoption of sound practices by all concerned.

The Xitieshan lead-zinc deposit is located in the north margin of the Qaidam Basin, Qinghai Province, China. It is one of the largest massive sulfide deposits in China and is supposed to be of the sedimentation-exhalation (SEDEX) type. Based on the main ore mineral and sulfur isotopic compositions in sulfides found in the wall rock, the S of the deposit is considered to originate from the mantle, but the fluid potentially mixed with sea water during the hydrothermal circulation exchange. The study of lead isotopes shows that the metallogenic material is characterised by the mixture of orogenic and upper crust sources. The lead isotopic signature of the wall rock is similar to that of the ore, which shows synsedimentary characteristics. According to the composition of the rubidium and strontium isotopic signature, the value of 87Sr/86Sr is lower than the average value of that in the crustal rock, which is larger than that of the mantle. Hence, the metallogenic materials of this deposit mainly originate from the crust, which is related to materials of volcanic rocks activation and migration of the deep hot circulating water. The process of the metallogenic fluid circulation shows continuous interaction with crustal material and lead to continuous enrichment of the ore forming fluids. From the study of the fluid inclusion microthermometry of the ore and the associated minerals combined with the C, H-O, Si isotopes, it is believed that the metallogenic fluid is mainly coming from the mantle or the deep magma chambers. The rising deep fluid then mixes with the sea water. The carbon dioxide escaping and mixing with sea water during the hydrothermal exhalation process leads to the rapid precipitation of the hydrothermal fluid to deposit metal. That is proposed as the principal formation mechanism of the Xitieshan deposit. A mining companyÆs approach to managing the risk of theft of explosives and initiating devices should be underpinned by an organisation-wide policy developed with internal and external consultation. It should be based on the principles of sound proactive risk management, planning, monitoring and remedial action. This paper aims to provide mining (and construction)organisations with the rationale and many of the tools they need to control explosive security risks. As with all legislative compliance, they are best managed by incorporating the statutory and legal requirements into company policies, management systems and plans, operating procedures and culture. This is the approach that has been adopted in this paper. Trends we should expect: more prescriptive legislation and stricter government regulations; enhanced enforcement and more prosecution; more sophisticated detection systems, eg airports; additional compliance costs; additional vigilance on record keeping; improved risk awareness and risk communication; wider use of explosives policies, management systems and plans; and additional security staff with investigative skills.It should be noted that mining companies will be required to play their part in reducing the likelihood of explosives, intended for mining purposes, being wrongfully used to threaten, hold to ransom or to injure individuals or members of the public or to produce property damage. This will be done by putting in place safeguards to reduce the risk of theft of explosives while they are under their control. On that basis, this is a business risk assessment rather than a hazard risk assessment. A conclusion of this paper is that mining companies can and should play their part in reducing the supply of explosive materials that can then be used for illegal activities. In fact, mining companies have always had this duty, but now the stakes are higher û æcomplacency no longerÆ.

West Cliff Colliery mines Bulli Seam occurring at a depth of approximately 480 m. The Seam is intersected by a number of small shear zones and faults. While the faults have caused displacement of the seam, the shear zones are strike-slip structures with small apparent displacement of seam. Outbursts at West Cliff Colliery occur while driving through these shear zones. Few outburst wave occurred where faults have been intersected. In the last 3 years, over one hundred outbursts have occurred at West Cliff Colliery. The size of outbursts varies from a small bump to exceeding 140 tonnes of coal. A number of studies have been undertaken at West Cliff Colliery to control outbursts and predict Outbursts in advance of workings. These include: geological investigations, microseismic techniques, gas adsorption studies and gas drainage. The investigations to date suggest that outbursts of gas at West Cliff Colliery are more a gas phenomenon similar to what occurs in overseas mines. The results of various investigations are reported. West Cliff Colliery is located in the mid- west of the southern coal fields of N.S.W.

From August 1962 to June 1976 Peko Mines Ltd. produced Gold Bullion at the Peko Control Mill using 18x24 Denver Mineral Jigs and strake tables. Gold ores treated during this period were obtained from Orlando, Juno and Ivanhoe Mines and from the Warrego Mine after 1974, all in the Tennant Creek Area of the Northern Territory. With the downturn in copper prices Warrego Copper ore mining ceased and the copper Smelter closed down in February 1974, Warrego gold ore continued to be treated in the Peko Concentrator.

The Porgera gold mine, located in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, produced 7.7 Moz of gold between 1990 and 1998. Reserves are estimated to be 12 Moz of Au. The deposit is associated with 6 Ma-old mafic alkalic intrusions emplaced at shallow levels into unconsolidated Jurassic and Cretaceous sediments, where they caused the formation of peperites. The mineralisation consists of an earlier base-metal-sulphide-rich stage with sericite-carbonate alteration (stage I), and a later phase represented by quartz-roscoelite veins (stage II). New styles of mineralisation and alteration have been recognised at depth in association with stage I. They consist of the assemblages magnetite-chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite and biotite-actinolite-anhydrite respectively. In addition, the recent recognition of adularia in some stage II veins (with roscoelite) confirms the similarity of this style of mineralisation with other adularia-sericite or low-sulphidation epithermal deposits.

Geostatistical simulation techniques are used to quantify uncertainty of spatial attributes of interest describing mineral deposits, petroleum reservoirs, hydrogeological horizons, environmental contaminants and so on. The majority of existing methods consider second-order spatial statistics and Gaussian processes, while the more advanced multiple point-based simulation approaches are algorithmic and do not consistently account for the high-order spatial relations in data. Recently, simulation techniques for complex and non-Gaussian spatially distributed variables have been developed, based on high-order spatial cumulants, and make no assumptions on data distribution or require data transformations. In this paper, the previous developments are extended and a new approach for the joint simulation of multiple correlated variables using high-order spatial statistics is proposed. The technique is based on a new algorithm for the decorrelation of correlated variables into factors, using the so-termed diagonal domination condition of high-order cumulants. The decorrelated factors are then simulated using high-order simulation and back-transformed into the initial correlated variables. The decorrelation using diagonal domination of high-order statistics is tested with a data set from a multielement iron ore deposit, and then a fully known two-dimensional data set with two correlated variables is used to demonstrate the practical intricacies of the proposed method.CITATION:Minniakhmetov, I and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. In order to counter the massive increase in the level of near gravity material that would follow the reduction in dense-medium cyclone separation density at B.H.P. Slab and Plate Product Division's B and C coal preparation plants, "wing tank" systems to control medium density to within ¦0.005RD units have been installed. However, despite very precise density control, cyclone metallurgical performance has been less than satisfactory. The approaches taken to identify the causes of this poor performance and to justify alterations in operational and maintenance practices are presented.

Mine ventilation control is one of the most important techniques to suppress the disastrous region within a limited area, to have enough time of emergencies (ignitions, fires and so on) for underground workers. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the simultaneous controlling of mine ventilation by using, micro computer connected to various kinds of sensors. In this study, basic of mine ventilation and graph theory are used for making computer programs when the characteristic curves of fans and temperature distribution in an underground roadway network are given.

Large areas of ground are permanently supported on coal pillars, both in extensive old workings and current drivages in active mining operations. Continued growth of civil infrastructure is resulting in more surface development above old bord and pillar mines and an increased need for mine development beneath existing surface structures and features. The result is a greater likelihood of conflict between miners, developers and regulatory bodies. However, over the last 40 years there has also been significant improvement in the general level of understanding of pillar behaviour and stability, both in Australia and overseas. This paper examines some of the issues to be considered when undermining surface structures or undertaking surface development above old workings. The Factor of Safety (FoS) methodology widely employed for the assessment of pillar stability is reviewed, including the key geometrical, geological and statistical concepts associated with the probability of pillar failure; local and international experiences are examined and significant parameters isolated. Common concerns are addressed in the context of actual practical experience, utilising a risk management approach. Recent advances in methods for the assessment of pillar stability are put forward, along with criteria for arriving at rational design outcomes.

In order to improve the cutting blasting effect of dimension stone mining, the water coupling directional cutting blasting technology was put forward. Based on the test apparatus and special charge configuration, the mechanism of directional cutting blasting was analysed. Directional device changes the initial equilibrium of the total energy of shock wave effect on blasthole wall. The initial directional crack first appears in the blasthole wall that makes contact with the directional device. Then, two cracks are connected along the direction of the blasthole centre line under the action of detonation pressure and water wedge. The plexiglass tests showed that water coupling directional cutting blasting technology produced cracks along with the predetermined direction completely. In recent years there have been significant developments in the tech- nology available for blast monitoring, analysis and simulation. Progress in these areas has been achieved through research conducted by explo- sives manufacturers and independent research groups from universities and mining companies. Miners are increasingly keen to exploit this tech- nology to help them design blasts which make optimum use of explo- sives to produce easily excavated muckpiles for the minimum possible cost. The art of blast design in the future will increasingly depend on an adequate understanding of the nature of the rock mass, the perfor- mance of explosives and the characteristics required of the muckpile to suit the chosen excavation machinery. Despite recent advances in blast simulation and the prediction of blasting performance, the best way to determine how a particular explosive will function relative to other explosives is to conduct properly designed and monitored field trials. This paper discusses recent work at Mount Thorley Colliery which demonstrates that field blasting trials can be monitored and analysed to provide quantitative data on the relative performance of bulk explosives. Techniques used in the trials included the sampling and analysis of explo- sives, insitu measurement of VOD, monitoring of near and far field vibra- tions, high speed and still photography and survey measurement of muckpiles. These techniques provided data for the analysis of throw, swell, fragmentation and burden movement together with data on the consistency and robustness of different explosive products. The blasting trials allowed both the shock and heave energy of various explosives to be observed in the field and led to the derivation of design rules for the use of differ- ent explosives at the mine.

The present study investigates the possibility of the direct removal of oxygen from the Ti-30Ni (wt per cent) alloy melt through the thermodynamic equilibrium reactions at 1623 K in the vertical tube furnace. The deoxidation efficiency of Ti-Ni alloy melt by adding different contents of metallic calcium (Ca) as a deoxidant was evaluated with the binary CaF2-MgCl2 flux. The thermodynamic equilibrium experiments showed that the total oxygen content in the alloy decreased from about 650 ppm to 350 ppm when 3.5 wt per cent Ca was added to the Ti-30Ni (wt per cent) alloy. Alternatively, the effect of flux composition in the CaF2-MgCl2 flux on the oxygen content was also investigated at 1623 K. Therefore, the effect of binary flux systems on the deoxidation ability was compared at 1623 K. According to the results, the flux system with 80 per centCaF2– 20 per centMgCl2 exhibited the best deoxidation capability, ie total oxygen content in the alloy reduced from 1450 to 550 ppm.

All large open pits in Australia have been mined, or are planned to be mined well below the local water table. This raises several issues that impact on mine safety, mining costs and regulatory approvals. Some pits will be æwetÆ, where they are mined through permeable horizons and where there will be measurable groundwater inflows. These will require some form of dewatering. There may also be some difficulties in the disposal of excess water. Other pits, may be ædryÆ, where they are mined through impermeable material and there are no measurable groundwater inflows but where there are stability issues related to hydrostatic pressures within the pit walls. These may require some form of depressurisation. Some pits are a combination of both. Effective management of groundwater inflows and groundwater related stability issues and the development of cost effective and environmentally acceptable dewatering and depressurisation systems requires an understanding of site specific hydrogeological conditions and practical experience in what works best for different conditions. The presentation will include an outline of the key hydrogeological factors that impact on large pits, practical methodologies for achieving dewatering/ depressurisation, and some case studies from the Goldfields, Pilbara and North Queensland.
