The R70 test is a good indicator of coal reactivity to oxygen and is commonly used to provide a rating of propensity for self-heating. Tests performed by The University of Queensland Spontaneous Combustion Testing Laboratory have resulted in the development of a large database that shows the impact of coal quality on this parameter. From these results it is possible to infer an R70 value, which can be used to gain an appreciation of the intrinsic coal reactivity before it is even tested. However, any interpretation of R70 values must consider the influences of coal rank, mineral matter and moisture content to provide a better understanding of the spontaneous combustion risk of a particular coal.

Metallurgists frequently use a small number of large samples to characterise expected mill performance, with the a priori assumption that these few samples are representative of the entire deposit. Geometallurgical sampling is becoming more prevalent as a way to use many smaller samples to indicate the expected recovery as part of the Mineral Resource or Ore Reserve estimation.Recent increases in prices for iron ore, together with the potential to produce high iron and low contaminant concentrates, have resulted in a renewed interest in recovering magnetite from banded iron formation and other deposits.Geometallurgical evaluation of magnetite involves approaches to sample preparation, sample analysis and resource estimation that are different from the methods commonly used for haematite iron ore. The magnetite sampling protocol is specific to each deposit, and is typically designed around a specific metallurgical flow sheet.The sampling protocol will typically include the use of Davis Tube analysis. The Davis Tube is a bench-scale test that is used for determining the mass magnetic recovery from a small amount of sample ground to a specific size. The magnetic concentrate may then be analysed and together with the mass magnetic recovery, may be used to simulate the expected mill recovery.During resource modelling, the mass magnetic recoveries and concentrate grades may be assigned to a block model using regressions with other chemical constituents, or may be estimated directly. For estimation of the concentrate grades, a weighting can be applied to account for the different mass magnetic recoveries from each sample and the impact of these differences on the concentrate estimates.This paper presents an overview of the use of metallurgical test data in resource evaluation for magnetite deposits.

Breakwater Resources Ltd is a Canadian base metals producer with Cu-Pb-Zn operations in Canada, Honduras, and Chile. Two of its operations contain economical gold levels which are recovered in both gravity and flotation concentrates. The gold payable terms in zinc concentrate are poor when compared to gold concentrates or copper concentrates and various flow sheets have been evaluated by Breakwater staff to maximise gold reporting in higher value products. The Myra Falls mine in British Columbia recovers coarse gold in the grinding circuit, part of which is upgraded and sold as a gravity-gold concentrate with the balance being directed to the copper concentrate. A sampling survey showed that there was potential gravity-recoverable gold in the copper regrind circuit. Installing a gravity concentrator in the copper regrind circuit increased the gold grade and recovery in the higher revenue copper concentrate and reduced the quantity reporting to the less well paid zinc concentrate. The El Toqui Mine in southern Chile has distinct high-and low-gold orebodies which are campaigned separately through the flotation plant. The high gold zone yields both a gravity concentrate and an unusual gold flotation concentrate. The gravity concentrate undergoes intensive cyanidation and electrowinning on-site to produce dore, while the fl otation concentrate is sold to gold producers. The zinc concentrate contains signifi cant gold values. The paper describes efforts over the past few years to improve gold returns at Breakwater's operations and highlights the different approaches dictated by the mineralogy of the gold occurrences at these two operations.

The main tectonic elements in Myanmar are a late Mesozoic and Cenozoic magmatic arc system in the west, repeated in northern Myanmar by more than 300 km of dextral movement on the Sagaing Fault, and the back-arc continental region affected by early and late Mesozoic orogenies, in the east. Historically most lode gold production has been from latest Cretaceous high-grade mesothermal veins and derived placers in the Wuntho and Tagaung-Myitkyina segments of the magmatic arc. Placer deposits in the Ayerwaddy River north of Myitkyina are currently worked by more than 100-bucket dredges. South of Wuntho, the magmatic arc and Pegu Yoma fold belt host epithermal gold with associated As, Sb and Zn in mid-Tertiary marine sediments. MyanmarÆs most productive lode gold deposit, the Kyaukpahto mine, lies within a north-trending district east of the magmatic arc and north of Mandalay. Here mineralisation and associated jasperoidal silica occur in Eocene sandstones and Permian and Triassic carbonates. Possibly this district continues southeastwards, across the Sagaing Fault, as sediment-hosted Sb Au and locally skarn Au mineralisation within a 1100 km long fold-thrust belt. Also present in the back-arc region are sandstone-hosted Au Cu in a Palaeozoic slate belt, and gold and stratabound gold-base metal mineralisation in the medial metamorphic belt. While untested targets remain in the magmatic arc, particularly for high sulphidation Au, the best potential is clearly within the back-arc slate and fold-thrust belts in the western part of the Shan Plateau and in northeastern-most Myanmar.

Multiple indicator kriging (MIK) has been used in the minerals industry for some decades. As one of the non-linear estimation methodologies, MIK has advantages related to resolving multiple or mixed populations, high variability data and strongly skewed distributions. Applying the MIK methodology requires a lot more effort when compared to other non-linear methodologies, for example localised uniform conditioning. This is due not only to the variogram modelling for multiple indicators, but the validation is also very important because the panel model is fundamental for follow-up work, including the generation of recoverable resources at the local or SMU scale. Apart from this, only a few reported case studies of MIK have documented post-processing of the estimated modelled distribution, representing the probability distribution at point scale at un-sampled locations. The MIK post processing should include the change of support from the point scale to the panel scale, and then the extraction of quantile values from the panel conditional cumulative distribution function (CCDF) for localisation of grades into the SMUs within each panel, based on a ranking estimate marking the SMUs from high to low. In this paper, we present a case study on a gold deposit with the MIK method with full-post processing implemented for recoverable resources. The MIK point estimate was carried out with an indirect lognormal change of support from point to panel scale, and localisation was done with a custom script. The localised uniform conditioning (LUC) method was also applied for comparison purposes. The comparison shows that MIK has advantages compared to LUC when comes to capturing the high-grades, especially when mixed or varying anisotropy is present within the mineralisation.

"Many open pit (OP) mines with considerable vertical extent are approaching the end of their life-of-mine; some of them are seeking the opportunity to make the transition from OP to underground (UG) mining. The decision on the best location for transition from OP to UG mining should be addressed at the strategic mine planning stage. Conservatively, the transition to UG mining is considered near or after the exhaustion of the reserve within the ultimate pit.However, if UG is evident and exclusively viable from the inception, defining the best location for the transition through a conservative approach may not be an optimal option to explore. This clearly establishes the need for a mathematical model that aims to maximise the project value and considers OP and UG mining with crown pillar (CP) requirement simultaneously. Underground mine layout varies from one UG mining method to the other, and consequently the variation in the location of transition is eminent. Thus, focus on the selection of UG mining method must be a part of this analysisThis paper presents an implementation of an integer programming (IP) based mathematical model that evaluates the changes in mining layout and the project value under possible variation in the transition point from OP to UG mining for stoping and block caving methods. An IP problem is a mathematical optimisation or feasibility method in which some or all of the variables are restricted to be integers. The outcome of the implementation reflects that mining strategies with OP transition to stoping and block caving methods generated higher values than OP-only mining strategy. The case study not only demonstrates the difference in mining layout for both stoping method and block caving method, but also reflects that a joint consideration of OP mining, UG mining and CP placement helps to achieve maximum project value and resource utilisation.Citation:Darbritz, J, 2016. Underground mines often rely on ore pass systems to ensure the transport of ore and waste. Consequently, it is important to ensure the smooth operation of such systems. Ore pass degradation that may require rehabilitation results in production delays and high operational costs. The occurrence of hang-ups within an ore pass also leads to disruption of ore production. There are important safety concerns when worker intervention is necessary to re-establish material flow in the ore pass. In order to facilitate the design of ore pass systems, mining operations often rely on past experience, or semi empirical guidelines. This paper describes recent efforts to establish a comprehensive database on current practices; encountered operational problems and solutions in ore pass design in Quebec underground mines.

It is well documented that drill and blast outcomes affect the downstream mining processes of loading, hauling, crushing and grinding but it can also significantly impact on mine profitability via dilution, recovery percentage, lump generation (iron ore), fines generation (coal, iron ore), coal loss and final wall stability. Drill and blast must therefore be optimised to improve the overall profitability via positively impacting on productivity and saleable product generation. It is however, difficult to achieve this because of the complexity of the number of parameters that must be integrated and managed across the entire mine value chain, ie the concept of æMine to MillÆ. This paper highlights, via a simple case study, the need to have a mineÆs drill and blast system both in control (so that it is predictable to a high degree) and with minimal variability (so the design actually makes it into the field). This type of management control is essential prior to optimisation work being undertaken. The æTeam ApproachÆ is discussed to illustrate the methodology of achieving drill and blast optimisation. A case study is presented to illustrate the potential benefits of this approach which in this mine represented a 27 per cent reduction in powder factor with the downstream functions achieving higher productivity with the same or reduced maintenance costs. It is essential for Australian mineÆs to implement the appropriate management strategies and experienced personnel placement to ensure that their mineÆs drill and blast system is correctly managed to facilitate the optimisation of profit. Without this, the Australian mining sector will become increasingly uncompetitive.

Most world-class high-grade (60 - 67 wt per cent Fe) hematite iron ore deposits are the product of enrichment of Precambrian iron-formations but processes responsible for enrichment are still unclear. Different models, ranging from syngenetic and diagenetic (King, 1989), deep-seated hydrothermal (Powell et al, 1999; Barley et al, 1999; Taylor et al, 2001; Gutzmer et al, 2002) and ancient supergene (Morris, 1980; 1985; Van Schalkwyk and Beukes, 1986) to modern supergene (MacLeod, 1966) have been suggested. The high-grade hematite deposits stand in contrast to martiteûgoethite ores which are generally accepted to be the result of supergene enrichment of iron-formation because they are found along Cretaceous to Tertiary lateritic weathering profiles (Morris, 1980; Harmsworth et al, 1990). Uncertainties about the origin of the high-grade hematite ores appear largely due to the monomineralic composition of the ores. They are almost exclusively composed of hematite (as microcrystalline hematite and martite), a mineral with wide stability field and very simple chemical composition that reveals little about its origin. Second, many of the deposits have been overprinted by later deformation and chemical weathering obscuring primary ore characteristics and zonation (Taylor et al, 2001). Third, surprisingly few detailed geological studies have been undertaken on the deposits with the aim of unraveling ore genesis. Most studies focus on the present-day structure of orebodies and their general physical-chemical composition for mining and beneficiation purposes. A more thorough understanding of the origin of high-grade hematite iron ore deposits may be gained by combining available mining-orientated data with systematic petrographic-geochemical analyses of different ore generations and hematite phases. This paper presents a first summary of results of an ongoing study, started some two years ago, of high-grade iron ore deposits in South Africa, India and Brazil, including a comparison with the rather well studied deposits of the Hamersley Province in Australia.

The association of specific plants and plant communities with soils developed over underlying superficial orebodies and mineralisation has been long recognised. It has given rise to the use of plant indicators for geobotanical exploration as a regular component of primary minerals reconnaissance where there is an undisturbed vegetation cover. That the chemical composition of indicator plants is a measure of their soil environment has further led to biogeochemical prospecting methods for minerals and its use in the mapping of underlying ore deposits. Where there is a strong surface expression of metal and metalloid anomalies, concentrations of potentially phytotoxic elements may reach a level at which they have strong selective impacts on plant populations. In such circumstances, natural selection has operated in the development of a unique flora composed of plant species and individuals with genetically-based tolerances to the stressed environment in which they continue to survive. These plants are called metallophytes. Metallophytes occur globally on all metalliferous sites, both in pristine undisturbed environments and in areas of mineral workings, ancient and modern. However, the best-developed primary metallophyte vegetation is found in the most ancient areas where there has been a long-term evolutionary impact of the underlying geology through ore weathering and dispersion of metals into the rhizosphere zone. Natural selection of metal-tolerant races of plants in these largely undisturbed areas can eventually lead to speciation and the development of an endemic regional metallophyte flora (Baker et al , 2010). Mineral wastes resulting from mining activities also allow colonisation by metal-tolerant individuals leading to the establishment of metallophyte communities. The distribution and extent of such communities is determined by regional and local factors relating to climate and substrate conditions and the availability of suitable plant resources on which natural selection can operate (Baker, 2009).The ability of metallophytes to tolerate extreme metal concentrations commends them as the optimal choice for ecological restoration of mineral wastes and metal-contaminated sites. Metallophytes have recently also spawned several novel phytotechnologies, including phytoremediation and phytomining (Chaney et al, 2000, 2005; Baker and Whiting, 2008). Action towards conserving the global metallophyte resource base is imperative because many species are under threat of extinction from new and extensive mining activities (Whiting et al, 2004). This has been identified as a priority in the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) Project of the Global Mining Initiative in 2002 but positive responses from the minerals industry have been slow. The last decade has, however, seen an ever-increasing interest in metal-tolerant and metal-accumulating plants, both from an academic standpoint and their use in revegetation and phytostabilisation (Tordoff et al, 2000; Baker and Whiting, 2008; Baker, 2009). Few studies have highlighted the need to conserve and develop these unique plants (Whiting et al , 2004). This presentation identifies future research needs for the conservation and exploitation of the global metallophyte biodiversity and its potential in sustainable mine closure. A review has been made of the studies focusing on methods for the description of grain -size distribution after breakage and, separa- tely, of the degree of liberation of the miner- al species making up the various grain-size classes of comminution products. The purpose of the study has been to de- velop an overall model of the phenomenon which, owing to the very effect of comminution, leads to the formation of grains that are generally of mixed composition. A calculation procedure has thus been de- veloped for the liberation function taken as the assessment of the distribution of mix com- ponents in the products obtained after a commi- nution process. The aim is to identify a func- tion which may, to a certain extent, simulate the variation of the grade-recovery function of an ore in relation to its degree of comminu- tion. The numerical model thus obtained has been tested out on results obtained experimentally.

Underground infrastructure is often a critical component of transportation and utility schemes. It is characterised by long design lives with limited access for inspection and maintenance. The exposure environment can be difficult to assess since it will often vary substantially between different locations in the same facility and with time during construction and in service. In addition, the specific demands placed upon underground infrastructure are not well covered by the exposure classes and other guidance given within current codes of practice. When problems occur they can be difficult to rectify and involve significant disruption.Given these substantial risks the prudent designer may adopt a systematic ‘durability planning’ approach which:· defines the environment and principal deterioration mechanisms for the various elements and construction materials,· predicts the design life for alternative durability enhancement options, and· recommends associated measures to be adopted during construction and in service.This paper describes the development of durability planning within Halcrow, giving examples of its use from its first implementation on tunnels under the Suez Canal in 1993 to recent projects in the Middle East and Australia. It seeks to demystify the process, identify shortcomings and speculate on its future development within the civil and mining sectors.

Incidental to the progress of a geological survey of the Kalgoorlie goldfield during 1927-28 a number of specimens of telluride minerals were obtained, chiefly with the help of Mr. F. G. Brinsden, general manager of the South Kalgurli mine, and Mr. Ernest Williams, general manager of the Boulder Perseverance mine. This collection was supplemented by a number of small specimens, including the rare copper telluride, which were collected and preseryed from the Kalgurli mine by Mr. A. E. Paton, and also by a few miscellaneous specimens from the collection o{ Mr. S. F. C. Cook, of the Palace Hotel, Kalgoorlie.An extensive knowledge of the rare tellurium-bearing minerals was compiled during the last century from occurrences in Transylvania and Colorado. The recognition of different species has been based on chemical analyses and crystallographic measurements. In a few species there has been an absence of crystalline form, and these, together with the discoveries in this century of rickardite and "weissite" muthmannite and empressite, have depended chiefly on the chemical analysis for identification. On the other hand, the crystalline form of nagyagite and stiitzite has been described in detail, while their precise chemical formulae were doubtfully defined.

Since January 2019, BHP Olympic Dam have been trialling the use of a drone based LiDAR mapping system for the purpose for surveying stope voids. This new technology utilises Simultaneous Location and Mapping (SLAM) algorithm providing positioning, stability and collision avoidance in GPS denied environments. Implementation of this system utilised underground personnel trained in the equipment’s use. The study’s intention was to evaluate the effectiveness of this equipment versus traditional surveying methods in regards to quality, safety and productivity. The trial results showed a marked improvement in the quality, productivity and personnel safety when conducting surveys. The use of the drone and LiDAR system reduced personnel and equipment requirements for surveys, thus allowing these resources to be deployed elsewhere. The technology’s simple and rapid deployment allowed multiple surveys to be conducted during a 12 hour shift, including ad-hoc work with minimal disruption to underground operations. After the drone’s initial trial, further work was conducted to utilise the Hovermap LiDAR scanner on other platforms to increase utilisation. A mounting system was created allowing the LiDAR to be mounted on a remotely operated loader or vehicle. This enabled drawpoint scans to be taken directly after production completion, resulting in faster stope close outs and drive scans for convergence monitoring. Implementation of the LiDAR system has resulted in improvements in the stope production cycle by reducing delays previously associated with data capture. The increase in the volume and quality of data has also allowed in-depth back-analysis of stopes in new mining areas to be conducted, which have driven improvements in the design process.

The selectivity in flotation columns involving the separation of particles of varying degrees of floatability is based on differential flotation rates in the collection zone, reflux action between the froth and collection zones, and differential detachment rates in the froth zone. Using well known theoretical models describing the separation process and experimental data, froth zone and overall flotation recovery values were quantified for particles in an anthracite coal that have a wide range of floatability potential. For highly floatable particles, froth recovery had a very minimal impact on overall recovery while the recovery of weakly floatable material was decreased substantially by reductions in froth recovery values. In addition, under carrying-capacity limiting conditions, selectivity was enhanced by the preferential detachment of the weakly floatable material. Based on this concept, highly floatable material was added directly into the froth zone when treating the anthracite coal. The enriched froth phase reduced the product ash content of the anthracite product by five absolute percentage points while maintaining a constant recovery value.

Grade Engineering® is a value-driven strategy aiming to maximise benefits by exploiting intrinsic grade variability of ore deposits. It utilises a multitude of separation techniques to remove low grade material before being introduced to post-blast size reduction processes, i.e. crushing and grinding. At an operational scale, Grade Engineering® techniques can be implemented at the drill-and-blast stage, to control the degree of fragmentation in accordance with the spatial distribution of valuable minerals across an ore domain through differential blasting. It can also exploit intrinsic textural and breakage characteristics of a given ore type to reject uneconomical barren material at coarse sizes, which is known as Natural Deportment. Grade Engineering® can also be employed in the deliver stage of the mining value chain through sensor-based bulk and particle sorting. Each strategy is therefore highly dependent on the responsiveness of an orebody to available techniques. That is, the extent to which Grade Engineering® drivers would be capable of unlocking potential values of currently un-amenable orebodies depends on how detailed the heterogeneous nature of ore domains can be described. This paper considers exploring possible linkages between deportment characteristics of an ore and its competence when broken in a range of energy inputs at a particlebased level. Accordingly, potential opportunity may lie in exploring whether the intensity of input energy (or degree of fineness) can be used as a lever to improve or ‘unlock’ ore amenability to Grade Engineering® techniques. Implications from such a detailed approach offers new opportunities to enhance Grade Engineering® gains through engineering ore competence variability.

Wall control blasting practices are necessary to reduce the impact of blasting on mine faces but can also have a significant negative impact on mine productivity and operating costs. The conventional practice in deep open pit mines is to use so-called trim blasts adjacent to pit walls. To provide burden relief these trim blasts have fewer rows than full production blasts and are fired to a cleared free-face; hence they are termed æunchokedÆ. This practice leads to scheduling constraints on the pit operations and can cause ore dilution due to excessive muckpile movement. The use of such trim blasts stems from the perception that increased wall damage results from æchokedÆ blasts. These concerns are based on the unproven assumptions that blast vibration levels and explosive gas penetration increase with increased blast burden and face confinement. This paper describes work undertaken as part of a major investigation into wall control blasting at the KCGM Fimiston Mine, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. It details a study to assess damage effects due to blast burden. Borehole air pressure measurements and borehole video camera inspections were done behind a series of single blastholes drilled with varying burden distances, as well as behind a dedicated trim blast and a full production blast. It was found that the measured damage effects, including visible rock cracking, dilation, and the limited extent of gas penetration behind the blastholes, did not vary significantly with burden or blast type for the cases tested. This result was in complete agreement with detailed vibration measurements conducted by Blair and Armstrong (2001) during the study, which found that vibration was independent of blast burden. As a result of these investigations, changes to the blasting practices at the mine were implemented. Dedicated trim blasts and free-face blasting have been replaced by modified production blasts and the practice of æchokingÆ blasts has been introduced. This has resulted in a significant improvement in productivity and cost savings without compromising pit wall integrity.

The paper provides a brief review of the multivariate uniform conditioning and the localised multivariate uniform conditioning techniques and presents a case study based on a porphyry copper gold deposit in Peru. Two other important scenarios have been investigated and will be particularly emphasised: The recovered selective mining unit (SMU)s depend on a combination of copper and gold content, which can be expressed by means of ænet smelter returnsÆ (NSR). Two approaches are compared. Firstly, the application of a composite cut-off on NSR on the joint distribution of each grade and the application of uniform conditioning to three variables is investigated, ie for the first approach NSR is used as the main variable. The second approach considers copper as the main variable. In the case of multiple domains the procedure used to apply the technique to process mixed panels is clarified and recommendations are made.

The mining industry is quite often faced with declining selling prices for its products in the face of rising prices for the input cost resources that it uses. Blasting is a key activity within the mining system and has a vital role to play within the Mine to MillTM concept. It is therefore important that blasting makes a positive contribution to mine profit and productivity. There are several variables involved in considering the profitability and productivity of blasting. The rock types and structures, the bench height, the blast hole drill rig specifications, hole diameter, spacing and burden, explosive loading and initiation and blast size fragmentation. Productivity accounting is a methodology which is used elsewhere to give additional insights into the productivity and pricing factors that drive the financial performance of a business. Miners know intuitively that productivity and pricing influence costs and profit, but only with productivity accounting can the dollars involved be calculated. Drilling and blasting are part of a chain of unit operations in a mine. For an owner-miner, drilling and blasting would be considered as cost centres and a productivity accounting cost model approach would be relevant. On the other hand a contractor is likely to consider drilling and blasting as a profit centre, in which case a productivity accounting profit model approach would be appropriate. Both of these will be explained. The paper provides a basic outline of deterministic productivity accounting and demonstrates its application to blasting. Drilling and blasting data from a mine was obtained for a two-month period. The change in productivity and prices was calculated to obtain the dollar contributions from them towards the change in cost. It was determined that although there had been productivity dollar gains these were offset by larger pricing dollar losses, the net effect being that total drilling and blasting costs increased. The productivity accounting analysis gives the facts and the mine is in a position to establish priorities based on knowing the dollar contributions of each input used.

"This paper presents preliminary results of ongoing research being carried out at the University of New South Wales Australia (UNSW) into improved methods for estimating rock mass strength. In this paper the rock mass strength of Hawkesbury Sandstone is assessed. An estimate is first made based on an extensive database of intact rock strength data being collated by the author and the assumption that rock mass strength can be determined following the geological strength-index (GSI) approach. The resulting strength envelope is then compared with nine documented case studies where stress induced failure has occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone. The case studies cover a range of conditions: construction dates from 1880s to 2006 spans from 3.2 to 12.5 m depths from 17 to 124 m excavation methods of drill and blast, roadheader and tunnel boring machine (TBM).Finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the principal stresses that were present at the time of the failures. The finite element models are interrogated to provide the values of major and minor principal stresses in and around the mapped failure zones. Failure and stable points are then compared to the proposed strength envelope(s) of Hawkesbury Sandstone derived using the Hoek-Brown and the spalling criteria. The ability of the Hoek-Brown rock mass strength criterion to differentiate between the ‘failed’ and ‘stable’ zones is considered to be remarkable.CITATION:Bertuzzi, R, 2014.
