A survey of selected West Coast Streams was undertaken in Summer 2001, Summer 2002 and Winter 2002 to establish the degree of arsenic (As) contamination in waters and sediments downstream of old coal and gold mine workings on the West Coast. Of the catchments studied, Soldiers/Ford Creek and Rapid Stream showed the most significant elevated As concentrations, predominantly in dissolved form, and evidence of AMD or ARD contamination (high sulfate concentrations and/or acidity). The rate and processes of removal of dissolved arsenic from the water column (attenuation) have been studied in these catchments. The Rapid Stream and Soldiers/Ford Creek catchments are directly affected by adit drainage from the Sullivan and Blackball coal mines respectively. Both catchments have high As concentrations in the sediments, with up to 770 mg/kg in Soldiers Creek and 490 mg/kg in Rapid Stream. Dissolved As concentrations are significantly elevated in the neutral pH waters of Soldiers Creek; typically as high as 100 - 200 ¦g/kg, up to 500 m downstream of the main adit discharge (800 ¦g/kg As). Adit inflows to Rapid Stream were acidic and contained 20 - 30 ¦g/kg dissolved As, with relatively high concentrations of arsenic in the stream water in winter (up to 18 ¦g/kg), but not in summer. Analysis of concentration trends and As:SO4 ratios downstream of these obvious As sources confirmed that dissolved As had been actively removed from the water column, but varied seasonally with greater removal evident in summer. Adsorption of arsenic onto iron oxide in the stream sediments is the most likely mechanism of removal. The Snowy River catchment, on the other hand, has relatively high As concentrations in both the sediments and the water column, but there was little evidence of a distinct AMD or ARD input from the Blackwater gold mining area. Preliminary investigation suggests that dilution rather than attenuation is responsible for decreasing As concentrations downstream.

Risk and dispute resolution are linked. Dispute resolution techniques are brought to bear on a dispute - which is an outcome of a risk being wholly or partially realised. There has been an increasing awareness by business of risk as a component of doing business. There is an accompanying awareness of the need to manage risk - including legal risk. Many companies have undertaken a systematic review of their potential risks and endeavoured to put in place systems to help to avoid or manage risks. A legal risk management program will not prevent disputes arising. However, such a program should prescribe how that dispute will be managed. The management of the dispute will involve consideration of the dispute resolution procedure to be adopted. The most appropriate processes will take into account the practical, personal and commercial considerations surrounding the dispute and be as efficient, cost-effective and user friendly as achievable in the circumstances for the benefit of all the parties. Carrying on business in South East Asia, whether as an explorer or a mining operator, brings additional considerations to bear in legal risk management and the dispute resolution process. A significantly different perspective is required due to the varying nature of the legal systems in many South East Asian jurisdictions. These jurisdictions often have relative uncertainty as to the law. This impacts on the dispute resolution processes and also raises further timing and cost issues. The authors contend that this is all the more reason to endeavour, as practically as possible, to adopt a legal risk management and dispute resolution profile which will provide business with the greatest prospects of maintaining control of the dispute resolution process. This presents a greater chance of a successful outcome to the dispute. In these times of increasing pressures on profitability because of low mineral prices, all costs of a minerals business are being reviewed. In such times, a significant legal dispute may have even greater potential to adversely impact on the companies concerned, together with the careers of the people involved. In this paper possible approaches to managing disputes and a case study a legal dispute in which Freehill Hollingdale and Page were involved are discussed. The dispute concerned an international mining company developing a gold mine in Indonesia and one of its contractors in Indonesia. Described is how that dispute was resolved. This achieved a very satisfactory result for the client - all things considered. Given the æadditionalÆ problems associated with ascertainment and enforcement of ærightsÆ in South East Asia, the longer the parties can retain control over their dispute the better off they will be. For this reason, the authors set out in this paper the main additional dispute resolution tools available - that are appropriate for use throughout South East Asia.

Kapowai Caldera Complex (KCC), located 10 km west of Tairua (eastern Coromandel Peninsula), is a late Miocene composite collapse caldera, formed during eruption of several small and large volume andesitic rhyolitic ignimbrites. Numerous epithermal Au-Ag mineral deposits and associated alteration zones at the KCC are related to caldera (rhyolite lava domes, intracaldera faults) or regional structures (faults). The main epithermal deposit exposed in the central KCC is associated with an E-W striking structural boundary fault that cuts the Welcome Jack rhyolite dome. Propylitic (calcite - chlorite) and sericitic (quartz - sericite) alteration haloes surround this deposit. Sporadic zones of sericitic alteration are also exposed within and on the margins of the Bulls Run rhyolite dome complex. Epithermal systems post-dated emplacement of these rhyolite domes, but were controlled by them. Propylitic alteration of ignimbrite in the floor of the Kapowai and Kauaeranga valleys is related to the major NE-trending Kapowai Fault which extends SW to south of Thames. Alteration along this fault pre-dates alteration associated with the rhyolite lava domes. Numerous sericitic and propylitic altered welded ignimbrite, rhyolite and andesite lava lithic fragments have been sampled from intracaldera ignimbrites, and although no direct source is known, they infer the presence of buried epithermal systems. Repeated epithermal activity at the KCC is inferred by the exposed epithermal deposits/alteration zones and the older buried geothermal systems. Silicic caldera volcanoes are considered to be critical volcanic environments for epithermal Au-Ag mineralisation in Coromandel, but are highly variable and need detailed stratigraphic, structural, petrologic, and geophysical studies to characterise them.

This paper gives an overview of the ASHRAE LibHuAirProp, CoolProp and REFPROP software packages. These packages were predominantly developed for heating, refrigerating and air conditioning engineers and the refrigeration and steam power industries, although CoolProp and REFPROP also cover combustible gases. The main aim of this paper is to highlight the existence capabilities and status of the different packages and where they can be used. The paper gives typical examples of the use of these software packages, specifically as Excel add-ins, and provides a comparison of results of typical mine psychometric and gas drainage calculations using the packages and more traditional ventilation and gas drainage calculation methods. The paper also introduces a hybrid method that improves accuracy compared to traditional methods. In typical mine situations, the use of software packages is probably not required; however, with the increasing accuracy of instruments, potential greenhouse emission costs and the sale of mine gas, more accurate measurements and calculations can potentially save (or make) significant sums of money.CITATION:Harvey, T J M, 2015. Classification within the Inferred Resource category is based on geological judgement and the balance of extrapolation versus interpolation that the Competent Person is prepared to accept. These resources are typically drilled at spacings well in excess of the geostatistical range and at a density that is non-uniform. In many cases, a substantial proportion of the available data will be historical, and should be considered with more recent data sources. The provision of a robust geological model will increase the confidence in any resource estimate, and should be viewed as a critical component. The definition of Inferred Resources is of great importance to vein gold projects, since Indicated and Measured Resources generally require costly underground development for delineation. Indeed, many gold vein operations possess substantial quantities of Inferred Resources (>75 per cent) in their resource inventory both at project start-up and during production. This contribution explores a number of the key issues when using the Inferred Resource category and presents four recent case studies.

Development of Cost-Efficient Environmentally Sound Technology for Enhanced Gold Recovery from Rebellious Gold-Containing Raw Materials Study of biochemical leaching performances in gold-bearing sulfide minerals processing enabled to develop environmentally sound technology of enhanced gold recovery from rebellious gold-containing raw materials. It was found that the ?-10 IMO bacteria activity contributes to increasing system oxygen concentrations and incrementing in rates of oxygen delivery onto surface of gold-bearing minerals. Bacteria activity products, ie, amino acids (?), support the formation of such heterocomplexes as [A-Au-CN]- , providing additional gold recovery into solutions. Technological properties of proposed bacteria solutions were studied. It was found that the proposed bacteria inoculants are capable to growing directly in process of raw materials leaching within a large pH range of media containing cyanides and thiosulfates. They oxidise the sulfur to the sulfate, as well as the antimony (III) and arsenic (III) sulfides to the pentads. For the first time, the hydrophobic cell properties, metabolites emulsifying efficiency, adsorption properties, wetting ability, surface tension and electro-kinetic potential of new bacteria strain solutions were studied as compared with chemical solutions. It was found that the proposed bacteria inoculants reduce surface tension at the solvent-mineral and solvent-concentrate phase boundaries. All aforementioned effects enhance mass transfer processes efficiency. IR-spectroscopy of new bacteria strain culture liquid allowed identifying available amino acids which substantially contribute to heterocomplex anion [A-Au-CN]- formation. Active involvement of heterotrophic bacteria in gold dissolving processes was identified. It was shown that the structure of metals complexes is substantially modified at intensive pulp agitation and during long-term storage. Fractional order reaction in biochemical and chemical gold leaching was identified. It evidences that the gold and impurity metals dissolving processes advance in synchronism. The both processes are running in diffusion zone. Biochemical leaching has advantages over chemical leaching, ie it provides enhanced rates of precious metals dissolving, improved gold recovery by 20 - 30 per cent, decreased cyanide consumption by 50 per cent. At the same time it allows to decontaminate dangerous substances contained in productive solutions produced in rebellious gold-containing raw materials processing. Basic parameters of flotation concentrates leaching by heterotrophic bacteria-assisted processing technology were tried and tested. Technology of gold sorption from leaching solutions was successfully tested.

Development of the Boleo Process Flow Sheet and the Direct Solvent Extraction (DSX) Circuit for Cobalt and Zinc Recovery The metallurgical process designed to treat the El Boleo Cu-Co-Zn-Mn ore involves a sulphuric acid leach in seawater under oxidative and then reductive conditions to maximise metal extraction. Copper and cobalt are recovered as cathodes by electrowinning, zinc and manganese as zinc sulphate monohydrate and high quality manganese carbonate, respectively, by precipitation after a number of separation and purification stages. One of the key purification stages of the Boleo metallurgical process is the CSIRO DSX circuit. The DSX circuit was developed using the synergistic solvent extraction (SSX) technology. Initially, a synthetic solution was studied, and by adding 0.4 M LIX63 to 0.5 M Versatic 10 in Shellsol D70, large synergistic shifts were obtained for cobalt (?pH50 4.24) and zinc (?pH50 1.62). After a single contact, the separation factor of metals over manganese reached over 6,000 for cobalt and over 380 for zinc, indicating excellent separation of cobalt and good separation of zinc from manganese, magnesium and calcium. The SSX system was further optimised with the modified synthetic pilot plant solution. The extraction of cobalt and Zn after a single contact was 93 per cent and 70 per cent, respectively, while the Mn concentration in the loaded organic solution was only 0.28 g/L. A proof of principle pilot plant operation was conducted in 2004 and a demonstration pilot plant for final engineering design in 2006 with outstanding performance of the DSX circuit. For the demonstration pilot plant, the overall recovery of cobalt and zinc exceeded 99 per cent with a raffinate containing only 4 mg/L Zn and 1 mg/L Co. The DSX organic system showed no sign of degradation during the pilot plant operation, indicating good chemical stability under the anticipated commercial operating conditions. The DSX circuit will be implemented in the future Boleo processing plant.

Multi-episodic mineralisation is often characterised by different spatial trends exhibited by different generations of the mineralisation. The structural complexity of mineralisation together with the heterogeneous nature of the mineralised zones prevents unambiguous application of the conventional deterministic methodology for 3D constraining of the mineralised domains (ie conventional wireframing is ambiguous).A different approach, discussed in the present paper, includes a probabilistic definition of the domains encompassing one statistical population of the data. The domains are defined geostatistically using the indicator probability model. An indicator threshold is chosen for the definition of the high and low-grade domains. The spatial distribution of this indicator is then modelled by a variogram. The probability of exceeding the given grade threshold is than estimated by ordinary kriging for each modelled block. Blocks are then grouped according to their probability of exceeding the threshold and a continuous closed volume (domain) created from this likely patchy grouping using an appropriate structural model to fill the gaps). Methodology for the geostatistically assisted domaining is discussed in the paper. It is suggested that this technique represents an additional tool facilitating a structural interpretation of the mineralised zones.After the geostatistical domaining of the lode has been completed the grade within each of the domains is modelled using Uniform Conditioning method. Application of Uniform Conditioning for modeling the grade distribution has a significant advantage over linear methods (such as inverse distance or kriging) because Uniform conditioning enables estimation of local recoverable resources at different selective mining unit sizes that can be substantially smaller than the drilling density and are unable to be estimated directly.

Fires are a common and recurrent unwanted event in the operation of open pit mines. In most cases, the causes of events such as fires are already æknownÆ but are either overlooked or not fully addressed in planning. Ongoing rapid growth of the global mining industry is creating a scarcity of skilled personnel, and high turnover within operations. This contributes to loss of corporate memory in risk management activities. RISKGATE« is an online risk management system designed to support and assist in the analysis of priority unwanted events in Australian coal mining operations. Funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP), RISKGATE« is a knowledge management program that delivers best-practice controls for unwanted events and assists operations in staying abreast of emergent risks and threats. RISKGATE« content has been primarily developed from an association of industry experts, and enriched with input from additional academic and technological resources. In mining operations, RISKGATE« provides a continuum of knowledge and best practice for risk identification, assessment and management. RISKGATE« will assist companies in improving safety performance, operational efficiency, operating practice and training. Massive hematite ore (MHO) is a special high-grade iron ore used as lump ore in the process of obtaining direct reduced iron (DRI). The influence of porosity on the reducibility was investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopes. Hematite is the main component of the samples and occurs as granular crystals (10 ¦m), microplates (1 ¦m) and euhedral martite (10 to 30 ¦m). Quartz, maghemite, kenomagnetite and goethite are minor components. Primary micropores (+ to 1 ¦m) are associated with microplaty crystals that fill cavities between granular hematite. Secondary micropores (+ to 5 ¦m) related to euhedral martite crystals are the most important. The total porosity of weathered samples, measured using nitrogen adsorption and mercury injection, attains values up to 18 per cent, whereas unweathered samples have a porosity less than 2.5 per cent. Varajpo et al, 2002 showed that reducibility is strongly enhanced by porosity and this work shows that reducibility can be indirectly evaluated by bulk density.

High concentrations of airborne coal particles is the main reason leading to health and safety hazards in underground coalmines. Water spray is one of the effective methods to suppress coal particles in mine sites, but the use of plain water is not effective enough to capture coal particles. By adding surfactants, coal wettability can be improved which will increase the coal dust suppression efficiency. In this study, a modified sink test was employed to evaluate coal wettability in the presence of two anionic surfactants: sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). Sink rates were calculated by measuring sink weight over test time. Different surfactant concentrations (0.01 per cent, 0.05 per cent, 0.1 per cent, 0.2 per cent and 0.4 per cent) and two types of water (tap water and deionised water) were selected to investigate coal wettability over three size ranges (0–38, 53–75 and 75–90 µm). The results show that both SDS and SDBS surfactants can lower the water surface tension and improve coal wetting performance. Sink rates increased as the surfactant concentration increased, and surfactant solutions prepared by tap water performed better than deionised water in enhancing coal wettability. Also, coal wettability varied for different coal particle sizes; the smaller coal particles were, the worse the wettability they possessed.CITATION:Chen, Y, Xu, G, Wang, R and Albijanic, B, 2017.
