A slag-metal equilibrium study of the system SnO-FeO-(Si02+Al2O3)/Sn-Fe was carried out at 1250°C. The distribution coefficient, k =(Sn/Fe)metal X (Fe/Sn)slag was found to range from 246 for an iron contentof 0·53 per cenrt in the metal to 82 for an iron content of 6·4 per cent. The value of the ratio ?SnO/?FeO was calculated and found to be approximately a function of per cent SnO in slag alone in the region (Si02+Al2O3)/ FeO = 0·4 to 1·2. Comparison with other published work suggests that the addition of CaO to slags having (SiO2+Al203)/FeO ratios of about 1·1 raises the value of ?SnO/?FeO...

Upward pressure on all mining operations is coming from the triple bottom line. To some extent this is being offset by the rise in mineral prices, but this may or may not continue. The other serious issue facing all companies is the replacement of economic reserves as exploration levels over the past decade continued to decline in line with falling mineral prices. In order to underpin the sustainability of the mining industry it is necessary to continue to reduce cost, reduce the mine environmental footprint, whilst increasing community benefit. At the same time it is imperative that we increase the economic reserves. The highest risk is in adding new mineral discoveries as the strike rate for economic discovery decreases. Gekko Systems Pty Ltd recognises that the most simple and risk averse route to increasing economic reserves is to reduce cut-off grade in the mine, thereby bringing formerly uneconomic reserves into the economic category. We have been developing a new process flow sheet which embodies the triple bottom line and the issue of economic replacement of reserves. This paper describes this flow sheet and presents four examples where this concept is/can be applied to bring about triple bottom line benefits. Sustainability can only be assured if we are the ones in control of our environment, costs and reserves.

The Golden Ridges Mine, one of the properties of New Guinea Goldfields Limited, is situated on the right bank of Nami Creek, not far from the township of Wau, in the Territory of New Guinea.The property is somewhat unique, in that the goldbearing ore-body occurs in the form of a flat seam-like deposit lying on a volcanic breccia, and covered with a mantle of overburden of decomposed porphyry. The overburden varies in thickness up to a maximum of about 65 ft.The ratio of overburden to ore is about 3 to 1. The practice developed is to strip the overburden by hydraulicking, and to mine the exposed ore under open-cut conditions, blasting to a vertical face, and using electrically operated scraper hoists for conveying the broken ore to the mill bins.The stripping of the overburden involves the boring of well-drill holes, blasting the holes and then hydraulicking the shattered material.

The Johnny Mercer lyrics 'You've got to accentuate the positive, Eliminate the negative, Latch on to the affirmative à' would best sum up the traditional approach to community relations in the mining industry. This '90s 'Public Relations spin' approach, usually backed up by scientific data, technical reports and graphs outlining risk probability and the impact potential on people and communities, is being challenged. Challenged by communities who have greater access to information, demand greater levels of transparency and corporate responsibility of large corporate operations and possess greater awareness of the communities they live in.   The growth of the environmental movement, of anti-globalisation, anti corporatism, apprehension of a large corporate's ability to deal with community issues, and a lack of faith in the abilities of regulators to regulate corporate activities, means our industry faces challenges on multiple fronts. It must now be able to address these from a personal/community perspective if it is to remain relevant within communities.   One of the keys to this is linking the internal activities and responsibilities to the externals concerns and demands for higher levels of operation and care.   This presentation draws on Corporate Public Affairs trends, functions and approaches and the application to External Affairs activities within Newmont Waihi Gold's operations in Waihi and regional exploration activities throughout the Hauraki Goldfields.   The approach presented works on the philosophy that communities don't necessarily have to like what we do, but should be able to identify and recognise the way in which we involve them in decision making, communicate our intentions and respond to issues.

Solutions of acetonitrile in water dissolve water soluble copper(I) chloride. Removal of volatile acetonitrile from the resulting solutions, by distillation with low grade steam, precipitates pure copper(I) chloride. This is used to purify a crude copper chloride sublimate from the chlorination of nickel matte but is applicable to other sources of copper(I) chloride. The pure product can be converted to pure copper(I) oxide, copper(II) oxychloride or pure copper metal directly.

A challenge on many industrial flotation circuits is controlling concentrate mineral grades using measurements that are provided infrequently. The mineral grades in concentrate streams are a critical performance indicator in any industrial flotation circuit. Failure to achieve concentrate mineral grade targets has significant financial consequences on a flotation operation. A violation of gangue mineral grade limits by the concentrator may also result in significant penalties.Online grade analysers which can provide reliable real time grade measurements are essential for effective grade optimisation. The Blue Cube MQi analyser (by Blue Cube Systems) has recently come to prominence for its ability to rapidly determine mineral concentrate grades online and has the benefit of operating in-stream. This has provided excellent insight into the actual process dynamics in the flotation circuit, and hence enabled real-time control and optimisation of concentrate mineral grades.MintekÆs Measurement and Control division, specialising in advanced control solutions for mineral and metallurgical industries, has had the opportunity to link the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser to the measurements provided by the Blue Cube system at the BCL nickel concentrator plant in Botswana. The project focused on stabilising the final concentrate grade while ensuring the final tailings are minimised, resulting in an improved nickel recovery. This site already had the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser for several years, but the original grade measurement device was unreliable and ultimately failed. The system was reactivated once the Blue Cube system was installed, replacing the old analyser. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of leaching zinc from the tailing (-2 mm) of Angouran flotation plant using sulphuric acid. The tails were first calcined at 800¦C for one hour. The effect of factors such as stirring rate, temperature, initial acid concentration and solid/liquid ratio, on zinc extraction were studied. The results obtained show that at the best conditions, about 91 per cent of zinc were leached using a stirring rate of 800 rpm, a reaction temperature of 50¦C, a 30 minute reaction time, a 100 g/L initial sulphuric acid concentration and solid:liquid ratio 1:6 g/ml. The P85 of the feed material was about 150 ¦m and acid consumption was 600 kg/t.

The importance of reducing the moisture content of fine coal, the nature of the retained water, and the means of its removal are discussed. A statistical technique, using a balanced block design, was used to isolate the significant factors determining water content of a coal filter cake. The most significant factor was particle size distribution. A simplex evolutionary operation (evop) was used to determine the optimal quantities of additives required to produce the lowest moisture content for a selected coal size. For this optimum condition (18·6 Ib H20 per lOO Ib dry coal), additions of 0·045 Ib magnesium ion, 0·0026 lb Separan AP30, and 0·098 Ib Aerosol OT, per lOO Ib dry coal were required. The work illustrated the uses of a statistical evop technique for the determination of optimal conditions in industrial research projects.

The leaching of Tellness (Norway) ilmenite concentrate in hydrochloric acid and mixed aqueous HCl-alcohol solutions at boiling temperatures was investigated. It was found that the alcohols methanol, ethanol and ethylene glycol all substantially increased the leach rate and in the case of methanol and ethanol this was achieved at lower boiling temperatures compared with aqueous HC.

Laboratory induced polarization measurements were made on representative samples of concentrated sulphide ores from three environments in New South Wales Comparisons were made with the membrane polarization exhibited by an argillaceous sandstone. The sulphide samples showed a strong polarization effect, the magmtude of whIch depended directly on the conductivity of tlIe pore electrolyte.

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was shown to catalyse biodegradation of chalcopyrite concentrates. The process was growth associated at normal temperatures (30°C) in dilute acid solution (pH2, H2SO4) in submerged cultures. Approximately 20% of the copper dissolved in 22 days in the presence of T ferrooxidans while less than 0.6% was released when bacteria were absent. In ore column leachates, the iron and sulphur oxidizing species T ferrooxidans, ranged from I04 to I06 cells/ml while exdusively sulphur oxidizing species ranged from I02 to 104 cells/ml. T ferrooxidans predominated below pH 3 while other sulphur oxidizing bacteria favoured higher pH. Organisms were distributed vertically in ore columns according to pH differences, resulting from gradual acid consumption by gangue, during trickle irrigation.There was a sequential development of bacteria in leachates from fresh ore irrigated with water only. High pH sulphur oxidizers were always present, low pH sulphur oxidizers appeared within a week while T ferrooxidans took 50 days to show up. Routine monitoring of bacteria in dump leachates provided a qualitative indication of events in otherwise inaccessible ore bodies.

All previous attempts to cut rock in boring by means of revolving steel cutters have failed, chiefly in consequence of the mis-shapen teeth grinding the rock and themselves simultaneously, until, after a very few revolutions, the points of the cutters were so worn that it was impossible to force them into the strata. The diamond drilling plant being cumbrous, complicated, and costly, and seeing that fully 70 per cent of the boring generally needed is in what is known as the" milder strata," it will be readily understood that much of the work done will not pay a dividend on the outlay, so great is the cost of removal, the wear and tear of the machinery, and the loss of diamonds. The Calyx Drill, however, invented by Mr. F. Harley Davis, has been constructed so as to overcome these difficulties, and will penetrate quickly and .at a low cost this 70 per cent. of the milder strata. The Drill has taken ten years' hard work and thought to bring it to its present state of perfection, and it will now drill with steel cutters the 70 per cent of the work performed by the diamond drills at a greater speed and at about one third the cost of the latter.The utility of the diamond drill for certain work is undeniable, but it cannot by any means be described as a machine of general popular usefulness that is to say, it is quite beyond the reach of the great masses of mankind.

IN all wet concentration processes it is of primary importance to determine to what degree the crushing must be carried in order to obtain the maximum profit per ton of ore milled.To effect a clean separation, either by gravity or flotation treatment, between either one valuable sulphide from another, or a sUlphide from the gangue, the ore must have been subjected to grinding to such an extent that the particles to be separated are completely liberated from each other.Insufficient crushing will result in either an incomplete separation of the sulphides from each other, and thus a loss of the one sulphide in the other, or else a loss of the valuable sulphide in the gangue.This being so, the question arises whether the added cost of extra crushing would be economically warranted by the increased recovery consequent on such a step.

COMPRESSED air is held in high esteem by the mining engineer as a medium for the transmission of power. The transmission, however, is accompanied by a high percentage of loss. Of the total work done by the steam cylinder'in compressing the air inthe air cylinder, less than 50% is ultimately utilized by the machines underground. These losses are due to its essential and inherent properties as a gas. One of the sources of loss is that due to transmission through the pipes which distribute the air from the receiver to the various places where it is used. THE object that the writer has mainly in view in presenting this paper is to draw the attention of those connected with the technical side of the industry to the unsatisfactory and by no means up-to-date methods employed in estimating the tin contents of an ore. At the same time, what is regarded, from the writer's personal experience, as a satisfactory and reliable method is explained in detail. It is a curious fact that for the last 25 years tin·assay methods have made little or no advance, while those now in general use ill connection with copper and lead ores can scarcely be compared with those then obtaining, so greatly have they been improved upon. What is special about being a female mine manager? We do not believe that the challenge is greater for women in managing a mine compared to managerial positions in other male-dominated businesses. The challenge lies in the fact that it is a male-dominated business. Being a leader belonging to a minority creates a situation where competence not only lies in having technical knowledge or general leadership characteristics, but also in acquiring an understanding of the male norm and being able to behave and communicate effectively in the organisation.In order to move towards a better gender balance at senior levels it is important to set measurable objectives on desirable proportions between women and men at management levels within the company. Focus and action are required to achieve this goal. At LKAB, the current target is to reach 25 per cent women in the total workforce by 2020. To date, LKAB has reached 19.4 per cent women in the total workforce, and the number of women in management positions is 19.9 per cent.It is of vital importance to create a non-discriminating working environment to achieve equal opportunities at the workplace, to be able to use the whole workforce as a resource for recruitment of professionals and managers, thereby improving decision-making, productivity, efficiency and profitability.Women as mine managers is not a utopia, but rather an effect of long-term investments in actions that result in equal opportunities for all employees.CITATION:Quinteiro, M and Sundqvist, Å, 2016. For the past 3 years Waihi as a community has been actively engaged in consultation about its future with regard to the environmental, cultural, economic and social viability. This has been made possible through the implementation of the Waihi Community Vision (WCV) process which bought together a diverse range of people and interests.   Through their collaboration and collective energies, they produced a montage of possibilities for the future of Waihi, known as the 2020 Vision. A proceeding evaluation process was adopted by the group to enable the myriad of projects to be assessed and prioritised in terms of the communityÆs social, economic, cultural, environmental and spiritual values.   From this came the desire to be involved in the implementation of these ideas and create an organisation that could facilitate the successful manifestation of the 2020 Vision and other suitable projects.   The Vision Waihi Trust (VWT) was formed in February 2006 and is intended to be a tool through which the community can address issues about its future sustainability. They will work collaboratively with community groups, Hauraki District Council and Newmont Waihi Gold to develop and implement innovative and practical solutions. It should be acknowledged that such outcomes are subject to influence by both external and internal factors and it is important to consider this when looking at sustainability issues.   Waihi is now at a very interesting stage of its development and has the opportunity to proactively design and implement plans to determine its future rather than just let things evolve. A town with a strong sense of its roots and with a strong community identity may be a more attractive as a place live and work. There are additional business opportunities which may also be stimulated by a community that takes charge of its own destiny.   The process that has been worked through over the past three years gives a solid foundation on which to build and must be viewed as positive community development. Waihi certainly has a unique proposition to take to the marketplace, based on its rich gold mining heritage and current modern day mining operations. This requires investigation, refinement and implementation and Vision Waihi Trust looks forward to building to a vibrant and prosperous Waihi in the years to come.

Zircon producers are often required to lower impurity levels to meet customer specifications as most of these impurities adversely effect the end use. For example, zircon sand in foundry applications needs to be free of any surface impurities (eg clay, gibbsite and goethite) which otherwise could cause sintering or fusion between cast metal and the zircon mould. Light coloured ceramic grade zircon, typically low in iron oxides and titania, is preferred in ceramics applications. The presence of impurities in zircon sands is a problem in the magnetic and electrostatic separation stages of their concentration. Previous work (Aral et al, 1997) showed that impurities in zircon sand concentrates occurred in the form of stains on grain surfaces, discrete gangue minerals and in the mineral grains. The gangue minerals such as rutile, garnet, xenotime, monazite, spinels, ilmenite, and aluminium silicates in the concentrate in some cases (Aral et al, 1997) contribute significantly to the impurity content of the concentrate. A careful hand picking of the impurity grains from a Western Australian zircon sand showed that the impurity content of the concentrate could be lowered significantly as a result of the removal of the surface stained grains and gangue minerals. The hand-picked ædirtyÆ fraction, comprised about eight per cent by weight of the concentrate, and consisted mostly of iron-oxide/hydroxide-stained zircon, silica grains and rutile, and occasionally ilmenite, monazite, gahnite and other (unidentified) coloured grains. The chemical analysis of the remaining æcleanÆ fraction showed that the major impurities (Fe and Ti) were reduced significantly (Table 1). The reduction in the uranium content was about 30 per cent. The other measured impurities, P, Mg, Al, Th, and Ca remained mostly unchanged as shown in Table 1. The contribution of ilmenite to the overall iron content of æcleanÆ zircon was insignificant as it comprised about 0.1 per cent weight of the æcleanÆ zircon. Rutile was the major source of titanium contamination (about one per cent by weight). Recent work (Aral and Calle, 1999) on zircon sand concentrates from the Murray Basin showed that, under the electron microprobe, the bulk of the impurities occurred in the dark back scattered electron (BSE) regions of the zoned zircon grains. The impurity contents of the light BSE regions and unblemished (unzoned) grains were low. The impurity content in zoned zircons has been investigated on single, relatively large, crystals (McLaren, Gerald and Williams, 1994; Smith et al, 1991; Romans, Brown and White, 1975). These studies generally aimed to investigate the incorporation of U in zircon as zircon is used extensively for U-Pb geochronology owing to its relatively high content of uranium. Smith et al (1991) identified a striking difference in composition between the areas of lower (dark BSE) and higher (light BSE) average atomic number in the zoned zircon. Their work showed in particular that the zones of lower atomic numbers contained very significant amounts of trace metals such as Y, REE, Nb, U, Al, Fe, Ca, Ba and, by difference H2O. In this paper the impurity distribution in zoned zircon grains was investigated on statistically significant number of grains before and after a leach treatment. The distribution of impurities was also measured in unblemished areas to compare the results.
