Drilling activity in the eastern interior coal basin, which includes Illinois, southwestern Indiana and western Kentucky, decreased greatly in 1931. Only 521 wells were drilled as compared with 1438 in 1930.' The decline in oil production (Fig. 1) was due partly to the failure of new production to make up for the natural decline of the old wells and partly to artificial curtailment of production to meet a decreased demand. During the year prices trended sharply downward until July, after which they made a partial recovery (Fig. 2). The average price of Illinois crude, which is the same as that for southwestern Indiana, was $0.852 per barrel in 1931 as compared with $1.616 in 1930, or slightly more than one-half. The cost of drilling has declined only slightly. The 25 per cent curtailment of production which was adopted by agreement of the southeastern Illinois operators on Sept. 1, 1930, ended on June 3, 1931. It was effective for five months in 1931 as compared with four months in 1930. The outlook for 1932 is for drilling activity in the whole area to continue at about the same rate or to decrease somewhat unless it is stimulated by a substantial rise in crude oil prices or by the discovery of extensive new productive territory. Discoveries of new productive areas and new sands during the year were few. A new gas area was discovered early in the year in Busseron township, Knox County, Indiana, in which the producing sand is in the Pennsylvanian at depths of 630 to 730 ft. The wells had a total initial open-flow capacity of 7 or 8 million cubic feet per day but are shut in for lack of marketing facilities. An exceptionally large gas well which was drilled in Gibson County between Oakland City and Francisco reached a total depth of 1490 ft. and produced from the Brown sand of Chester age. The initial open-flow capacity was reported as 13 million cubic feet per day. In western Kentucky a number of extensions to oil and gas-producing areas are reported. Crude kaolin exhibits a wide particle size range in which kaolinite is the predominant mineral. Bene-ficiation by wet processing produces high-brightness white pigments. The wet processing techniques peculiar to kaolin beneficiation are emphasized in this article in some detail. Included are discussions of long-distance pipeline transportation, centrifuga-tion, flotation, spray drying and shipment as 70% solids slurry. Georgia, a state seldom considered to be an important mineral producer, has one surprising feature — it is the nation's largest producer of kaolin. Kaolin is a highly important raw material in the paper, rubber, ceramic whiteware, paint and chemical industries. In 1965, more than 2.7 million tons of kaolin were produced in this state, a 150,000-ton increase over the preceding year, and production continues to climb. Strictly defined, the term "kaolin" applies to a group of hydrous aluminum silicates in which kaolinite is the predominant mineral. Kaolinite is inherently white, non-abrasive, chemically inert, and of a very fine particle size, ranging from sub-micron to 40-microns equivalent spherical diameter. An electron-micrograph of kaolinite is shown in Fig. 1. The particles finer than about 2 microns are thin, elongated plates, hexagonal in outline. The larger particles, coarser than 2 microns, are predominantly vermicular in outline with a foliated structure. Table I shows a typical chemical analysis of commercial, wet-processed kaolin compared to pure kaolinite. The sedimentary Cretaceous deposits of the Coastal Plain are the source of most of the kaolin produced in the Southeast. These deposits are of relatively high purity, and it is not uncommon to find the clays running greater than 90% kaolinite. Beneficiating plants using wet processing techniques are most numerous in an area within about 50 miles east of Macon, Ga., in a band approximately 15 miles wide. Kaolin may vary widely in quality from one deposit to another, or within the same deposit. The qualities critically examined are brightness index as measured by reflectance, viscosity of water suspensions, bleachability and particle size distribution. Crude kaolin always contains sand and mica in varying amounts, along with small amounts of many other minerals. These are classed collectively as "grit" because; they are generally coarser than 325

INTRODUCTION A CONSIDERABLE number of high-temperature alloys, that is, alloys which have load-carrying ability at elevated temperatures, have been developed on an empirical basis. In order to determine why these alloys possess this particular ability, a project was started at Battelle Memorial Institute on the fundamental factors promoting high-temperature strength of alloys. At the time of inception of this study, the cobalt-base alloy, Vitallium, was widely used because of its good high-temperature properties. One phase of this study was to include an investigation of the structures observed in Vitallium after various heat treatments. However, before investigating the structural features of Vitallium, it appeared logical to examine the phase diagrams of the related binary systems in order to develop information as to which phases- might be present in Vitallium. A preliminary survey of the pertinent alloy systems was made, with particular emphasis on the cobalt-chromium system, which is the base for the Vitallium series of alloys. The early work of Lewkonja1 and Guertler2 indicated that cobalt and chromium are completely miscible in the liquid state, and, within a narrow temperature range, in the solid state; that the liquidus shows a minimum; and that the alloys containing 45 to '85 pct chromium undergo a transformation at 1200 to 1250°C. More recently, Wever and Haschimoto,3 Wever and Lange,4 and Matsunaga5 carried out experimental work which led to the diagrams shown in Fig I and 2. Both diagrams are based on thermal analysis, metallographic, magnetic, and dilatation data; in addition, X ray diffraction results were used by Wever and Haschimoto, and electrical resistance measurements by Matsunaga. It is apparent from a comparison of the two diagrams that there was a difference of opinion as to the locations of the boundaries of the various phases, and as to the existence of a phase containing approximately 47 pct chromium. With these exceptions noted, it might be pointed out that the two diagrams are similar, and that, in general, any particular reaction which is shown on both diagrams occurs at a lower temperature on the Matsunaga diagram than on that of Wever-Haschimoto-Lange. Thus, in view of the gaps in the data and the questionable features in the published diagrams, it appeared desirable to start the fundamental study of Vitallium by determining the diagram for the cobalt-chromium system. EXPERIMENTAL WORK For the convenience of the reader, the diagram as determined by the present investigation is presented in Fig g. The oil production in Bahrein for the year 1937 was 7,762,264 bbl., a monthly average of 646,855 barrels. Sufficient potential production had been developed in the Second Pay (Main Pay) at Bahrein by the end of 1936 to supply the anticipated crude demand, and the drilling program was changed from straight development to partial exploration during 1937. Two nonproductive wells were drilled to test the Third Pay at a depth of about 2900 ft., or some 900 ft. below the top of Second Pay. As a result of this exploratory work, the normal drilling program was slowed down and only eight new wells were completed in the Second Pay during 1937, making a total of 45 producers from the Second Pay. The deep test was drilling at 5081 ft. at the end of the year. A 550-ft. section (termed Fourth Pay) of porous limestone interbedded with anhydrite was topped at about 4150 ft. Numerous drill-stem tests indicated that the limestone was very permeable and that it carried large volumes of natural gas under high pressure together with a small amount of high-gravity oil or condensate. Drill-stem tests also indicated that the bottom 50 ft. of the 550-ft. section carried an encouraging amount of heavier oil, gravity about 37" A.P.I., with characteristics similar to the oil produced from the Second Pay. A well was started somewhat down-structure from the deep test to better determine the oil-producing possibilities of the Fourth Pay. Some refinements in drilling technique were adopted during the year. All wells started to the Second Pay were drilled with rotary from the surface. The top 1500 ft. of porous limestone section, formerly drilled with cable tools, is now drilled with rotary without circulation, using water to wash the cuttings into cavities. The shale section from this point to the top of the oil horizons is drilled with natural mud circulation. The productive horizons are drilled with oil circulation under pressure control. A second satisfactory method of completing wells was developed when the two Third Pay test wells were plugged back and gun-perforated through cemented casing opposite the Second Pay, with good results.

The carrier gas method was used to measure the vapor pressure of copper over liquid copper and Fe-Cu alloys. From these results, the activity of copper in the alloys was determined at 146°, 1550°, and 1600°C. Calculations of the activity of iron were made from the results for copper. The activities of copper and iron show strong positive deviations from Raoult's law. KNOWLEDGE of vapor pressures of liquid metals has both practical and theoretical value. Fuming of metal baths is directly related to vapor pressure, and the data should bc particularly important to the technology of vacuum metallurgy. Theoretical applications include determinations of heats of vaporization, heats of solution, and activity coefficients in alloys. Methods for measuring vapor pressures of metals have been reviewed by Speiser and Spretnak.' High-vacuum procedures, such as the Langmuir and Knudsen methods, have been used most widely in recent years. However, these methods are not applicable to vapor pressures greater than lo-' mm Hg and often cannot be used in the temperature range of greatest interest. The purpose of this investigation was to develop a procedure for measuring vapor pressures of pure metals and alloys that would be applicable to pressures greater than lo-' mm Hg. The transportation or carrier gas method has been used. Copper was chosen for the initial work because its vapor pressure has been established fairly well and the reliability of the technique could be ascertained. Applicability to alloys was studied by determining the vapor pressure of copper over liquid Fe-Cu alloys. Experimental Procedure The tests were carried out in a graphite-spiral resistance furnace. The charge consisted of 50 g of metal contajned in a covered sintered-alumina crucible 1/2 in. deep and 13/8 in. ID. Two sintered-alumina tubes led from outside the furnace to within the crucible, passing through close-fitting holes in the crucible cover and radiation shield. The arrangement of the crucible and the two alumina tubes is shown in Fig. 1. The small-bore tube (1/16 in. ID by 5/16 in. OD) served as the inlet for the carrier gas. The tip of this tube touched the metal surface and the flow of gas imparted a rippling motion to the metal. In this manner the gas was brought into close contact with the metal and became saturated with metal vapor. In most of the tests the flow rate of the carrier gas was 560 ml per min, measured at room temperature. RECENTLY, a description of the wartime work in this laboratory on the U-Si phase diagram was published. This diagram was available earlier in the open literature; as were Zachariasen's crystal structure identifications for the compounds in the system. The uranium end of the phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. The most recent work on this system has emphasized the peritectoid E phase, of particular interest for a number of reasons. The early work provided evidence of this phase's resistance to corrosion in water and of its slight ductility. Further information on these properties has been obtained here. Work elsewhere4 has provided evidence of stability under irradiation. This body-centered-tetragonal phase is relatively isotropic compared to the more usually applied a or ? uranium phases. Unlike the other compounds in this system, it contains no Si-Si covalent bonds.3 In addition, consideration on the basis of Pauling's concepts leads to the conclusion that in the E phase, uranium has a higher valence than in any of the other phases. Definition of the composition of the ? phase has been of prime concern in the study of this alloy. Evidence is presented below that its silicon content is slightly higher than that of stoichiometric U8Si, the composition frequently assigned this phase on the basis of Zachariasen's identification. This work on the composition required careful attention to the method of dissolving the alloy for analysis, since apparently low silicon contents could be found under certain conditions, see Appendix. Preparation: Melting, Casting, and Heat Treatment—Almost all the samples were from castings with a diameter of 13/4 or 2 in. and about 1 ft long, weighing 10 to 15 lb. The U-Si charge was melted by heating to about 1650°C in an induction heated vacuum furnace. Beryllia crucibles were used at first, but were replaced by zirconia-washed graphite as the technique of keeping the carbon content low enough (about 500 ppm) was mastered. The alloy was bottom-poured at about 1650°C into graphite molds. A few small buttons, weighing no more than 50 g, were prepared in a small arc melting unit.' Since cast material has a preponderance of uranium and U8Si2, heat treatment is necessary to ob-tain the ? phase by the solid-solid peritectoid reaetion. Once obtained, the ? phase is stable to room temperature, obviating the need for speeial attention to the method of cooling after epsilonization, see Fig. 1. It was found desirable to epsilonize at 800°C for a week. For some purposes, in which residual uranium and/or U8Si2 are tolerable, shorter periods may be adequate. The temperature of 800°C is not critical, since essentially the same results were obtained from 785° to 825°C. Further departure from this epsilonization range is inadvisable.

INTRODUCTION THE reaction of carbon in solid solution in a metal with the surface oxide film on many metals may be inferred from thermodynamic calculations for high vacua and high temperature conditions. Holm1 has recently shown that oxide films may be removed from ferrous materials by heating in a vacuum at high temperatures and that carbon is the essential element in the reaction. Considerable work has been described in the literature on the decarburization reaction. Several general references may be noted.2,3,4 However, the nature of the mechanism involved in the decarburization is not well understood. Our interest in this reaction resulted from many attempts to degas and to reduce by pure and dry hydrogen the surface oxides 0n strips of various types of chrome-nickel alloys. Some of the early experiments on the behavior of 13 pct chrome-iron in vacua of the order of 5 X 106 mm and at a temperature of 600°C have been reported.5 These experiments showed a slow reaction with the residual oxygen or water vapor in the system and no reaction with hydrogen. This is in accord with thermodynamic data which would lead to the prediction that it is extremely difficult to maintain a hydrogen atmosphere at 600°C pure enough to reduce Cr203 formed on the surface. The crystal structure of the superficial oxide film formed on 13 pct chrome iron and Nichrome V has been investigated in the thin film range by Gulbransen, Phelps and Hickman,6 and shown to be Cr203. It was surprising to us to note that when a specimen of Nichrome V containing approximately 80 pct nickel and 20 pct chromium was heated to 850°C in a high vacuum, the specimen' lost weight. The rate of weight loss was very temperature sensitive. A study of this reaction in vacua and in a hydrogen atmosphere is the subject of this communication. TYPE REACTIONS Let us consider the various reactions which may occur when a metal is heated in vacua, in a hydrogen atmosphere, or in an oxygen atmosphere. The number and kind of reactions will depend upon the chemical nature, of the metal, its alloying constituents and the location of the alloying constituents. The metals used in this study are chrome-nickel alloys of the heater type. They consist essentially of chromium, nickel and iron, small amounts of carbon, silicon and manganese and traces of zirconium, calcium, aluminum and magnesium. The trace elements are added to improve the lifetime and other characteristics of the alloy when used as a heater. Much has been written on milling and cyanidation as practiced on this gold field, therefore the purpose of this paper is to record its development only briefly and to describe in more detail the contemporary state of the science and art of this branch of metallurgy. It is a pleasing task, because a steady evolution is to be recorded. Definite trends influenced the development. Some have the stamp of original thought and observation; many have been achieved from a logical sequence of planned experimentation and research; while others have resulted from the drive of sheer necessity. The large scale of operations and capital outlay has compelled conservative progress. Banket ORe For a better understanding, a review of the characteristics of the ore may not be out of place. The Witwatersrand gold ore is named "banket" from the similarity of the oxidized outcrop ore to the Boer almond cake of that name. The inter bedded orebody is commonly called "reef." It is a conglomerate composed of various sizes of pebbles, principally non-gold-bearing white quartz, which constitute about 70 per cent of the bulk, within a matrix of cementing material consisting of fine-grained quartz, sericite, chlorite and chloritoid and containing the precious metals and mineral sulfides. Argillaceous components in the mil pulp may be as high as 32 per cent. Of the sulfide minerals, pyrite and pyrrhotite are predominant. Most base-metal sulfides are present, but sporadically and generally only found in highly concentrated mill products. In the latter, osmiridium is recovered in varying amounts; from 1 oz. in 3000 tons to 1 oz. in 10,000 tons of ore. Most of the oxidized ore has been mined, so milling is confined principally to the sulfide ore. A typical analysis of sulfide ore is: silica (SiO2), 86.76 per cent; pyritc (FeS2), 2.75; ferric oxide (Fe2o3), 2.65; alumina (Al2o3), 6.91; lime (CaO), tr.; magnesia (MgO), 0.70; sp. gr., 2.7. Milling grade at present price of gold (137 shillings per ounce) varies from 3.5 to 8.5 dwt., with one mine milling ore as high as 16 dwt. The

The effect of fluid viscosity on the classification of solids in a liquid-solid cyclone was investigated. The separation size was found to be proportional to Additionally, it was found that the prediction of flow rate through a cyclone is dependent on a Reynolds criterion. Above a critical value, the flow can be predicted by a simple equation, whereas, below this value a variable orifice coefficient must be introduced. INTRODUCTION The solid-liquid cyclone is widely used as a device for classification, thickening, and heavy media separations. The more important variables and how they affect the performance of a cyclone are known and have been the subject of several investigations.' In general, these studies have paid little attention to the viscosity and those which have, introduced it through Stokes settling considerations. Systems which contain appreciable amounts of swelling clays exhibit viscosities much greater than water, and in these systems the viscosity term becomes important in determining the separation size. The work described here was done to determine in a Newtonian system the dependence of separation size on viscosity. BACKGROUND The separation size for a cyclone classifier has been related to the parameters of the cyclone by an equation of the form: where a is probably between 1.3 and 1.5, ß is between 0.50 and 0.57, and 6 has a theoretical value of 0.5. where y has a value between 1.8 and 2.0. Although these relationships are empirical, equations that differ only in the exponents have been derived from theoretical considerations. Those interested in the origin of these equations are referred to some of the original work.6,7 MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The laboratory apparatus used in this study is pictured diagramatically in Fig. 1. Feed slurry was pumped from an agitated 15-gallon plastic tank by a centrifugal pump driven by 3/4 hp motor. The static pressure of the feedstream and thus the pressure drop through the cyclone was measured on a gage located as close to inlet of the cyclone as possible. The lorsion effusion method has been used to measure the vapor pressure of lead over pure lead and eight Pb-Sn alloys ranging from 9.1 to 87.9 at. pct Pb in the temperature range 950° to 1125°K. The resulting ?H°y 298 = 46,630 ± 200 cal per g-atow for pure lead is in excellent agreement with previous work. Deriued ?Gph values for the alloys were smoothed and correlated with previous heat of formation data to obtain entropies for the liquid alloys. values for the tin component were calculated by Gibbs-Duhem integmtion. Surfhce depletion of these liquid alloys was found to be absent, as shown by the fact that the measured pressure remained substantially constant with time in contrast with previous measurements on iron-rich solid Fe-Mn alloys. The activities and Gibbs (free) energies of the liquid Pb-Sn system are not well known although the heats of formation have been accurately determined by K1eppa.l Vapor pressure determinations of the activity of lead by Voronin and Evseev2 disagree with those of Predel.3 Elliott and chipman4 measured activities by the electromotive -force technique in the ternary Pb-Sn-Cd system. From the resulting values of the activity of cadmium, they were able to calculate the activities of lead and tin for the binary Pb-Sn system at the compositions xsn = 0.33 and 0.67. Atarashiya, Uta, Shimoji, and Niwa5 determined the activity of tin from Hz-H2O equilibrium measurements, but their results are subject to question due to uncertainty in the final state of their samples. To resolve these differences, measurements of the activity of lead were made using a torsion-effusion apparatus. Among other advantages, this apparatus rapidly detects errors caused by surface depletion, which tends to reduce the apparent vapor pressure of the more volatile component. If the measured torques remain nearly constant with time, only bulk depletion is occurring. This contrasts with the rapid decrease in torque found in solid Fe-Mn alloys at high temperatures and low manganese contents.6 EXPERIMENTAL 99.999+ pct Pb was obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. and 99.999 pct Sn from Vulcan Detinning Co. Eight Pb-Sn alloys were prepared by melting together weighed amounts of the pure metals in evacuated Pyrex tubes and quenching the melts in water. Loss of weight in preparation was less than 0.02 pct in all cases. The effusion cells were made from high-purity, nonporous graphite. Graphite was chosen because of its resistance to reaction with lead and tin and because it can be accurately machined with precision orifices. Two cells were used with overall dimensions as shown in Fig. 1. The orifices of cells 1 and 2 were, respectively, 1 and 1.5 mm in diam.

The deformation mechanisms occurring in polycrys-talline, commercially pure titanium and a Ti-8 pct A1 alloy have been investigated and compared to earlier results by Levine on high-purity titanium single crystals and by Conrad on commercially pure titanium. In accord with Levine, two consecutive deformation mechanisms are observed to exist below 500°K with the transition temperature between mechanisms, Tc, strongly dependent upon interstitial composition. T, is found to be 210°. 375° -430°, and 450°K for alloys A large number of investigations have been conducted to determine the rate-controlling mechanisms of plastic deformation occurring in fcc and bcc metals. Very few investigations of a similar nature have been conducted for hexagonal metals. In fact, until very recently, magnesium is the only hexagonal metal which has been systematically investigated for determination of the rate-controlling deformation mechanisms.1"3 From these investigations, it was concluded that basal slip below 420°K occurs by the intersection of forest dislocations,1'3 while for prismatic slip the Peierls mechanism is rate-controlling at low temperatures with interstitial compositions of 0.024, 0.42, 0.61, and 1.13 at. pct expressed in terns of oxygen equivalents. The low-temperature mechanism is found to be an impurity obstacle mechanism in contrast to Levine's earlier conclusion of the Peierls barrier. Measurement of the activation parameters for deformation and estimation of the force-distance profile of the obstacles show their retarding force to be effective over longer distances from the obstacle as the interstitial composition increases. and thermally activated cross slip at higher temperatures. 2 The potential technological importance of titanium alloys has prompted recent studies of the deformation and fracture characteristics of titanium and its alloys. 4-8 Levine' systematically investigated the low-temperature deformation behavior of high purity titanium single crystals oriented for either basal or prismatic slip. It was concluded that the Peierls mechanism was rate-controlling at temperatures below 210°K, while above this temperature an undefined mechanism was rate-controlling. Conrad 7,8 concluded from an analysis of the composition dependence of the critical shear stress at 0°K and measurement of the activation parameters that the low-temperature deformation of titanium is controlled by an impurity

HenRy Clay FRick, a pioneer in modern coke and steel industry and, in more recent years, one of the outstanding financiers of America, died on Dec. 2, 1919, at his home on Fifth Avenue, New York. Although he had been ill since election day, when he had an attack of indigestion which developed into ptomaine poisoning, his death was a surprise to all. He is survived by his widow, Adelaide Howard Childs Frick; a son, Childs Frick, one unmarried daughter, Helen C. Frick, and four grandchildren. A quiet funeral service was conducted at the Frick home on Wednesday afternoon by the Rev. Dr. Leighton Parks, pastor of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. This was attended by members and very intimate friends of the family, Trustees of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Officers of the Links Club, and Directors of the United States Steel Corpn. Henry Clay Frick was born Dec. 19, 1849, in West Overland, Westmoreland Co., Pa. His father, John W. Frick, was a farmer of Swiss ancestG, and his mother, Elizabeth Overholt Frick, a member of an old Mennonite family. Until he was sixteen, he spent his time at school, on his father's farm, and in his grandfather's distillery, where he kept books. He attended Otterbein University, in Ohio, for a year. Frick, learning that coke was an essential of the already rapidly developing steel business, early invested every cent he could get in coking-coal lands. With the help of an associate of his grandfather, he formed the corporation of Frick & Co., coke dealers, and acquired fifty-one ovens in the Connellsville region and 300 acres of soft-coal lands. During the panic of '73, with the help of Judge Thomas Mellon, a Pittsburgh 'banker, he bought out his partners and while coke was selling at 90 cents a ton enlarged his purchases of suitable lands. Later, the price of coke increased until it was selling at $5 a ton. Before he was 30 years old, Frick was rated a millionaire. Association with CaRnegie In 1878, he sold an interest in the business Do E. M. Ferguson of New York, and later a share to Mr. Ferguson's brother. Four years later the business was reorganized into the H. C. Frick Coke Co. with vast coal lands, great banks of ovens, and a capitalization of $2,000,000. Then began his association with Andrew Carnegie. He exchanged a part of his coke interest for shares in Carnegie Brothers of Pittsburgh,

The critical resolved shear stress and the strain rate dependence of the .flow stress are reported for Ag base A1 single crystals up to 6 at. pct A1 over a temperature ralzge of 4.1° to 470°K. At room temperature the solid solution strengthening is attributed brinciballv to an increase in the dislocation density on alloying. At 42°K the alloys are relatively stronger because the dislocations widen on alloying and are more difficult to cut. In a previous paper, the authors reported the characteristics of strain aging in Ag base A1 alloys.' The variation of the magnitude of the strain-aging yield drops on aging time, aluminum content, and testing temperature strongly indicated that the phenomenon is due to the Suzuki mechanism. In the present paper, the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) and the strain rate dependence of the flow stress are reported for Ag base A1 single crystals as functions of testing temperature (4.2" to 470") and A1 content (0 to 6 at. pct). Observations on the substructure and measurements of the effect of crystal growth rate are also given. The experimental re- sults appear explainable considering that aluminum additions increase the dislocation density and dislocation width. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The methods of specimen preparation and tensile testing were described previously.' Briefly, single crystals were grown from the melt in a vacuum (1 x lom5 mm Hg), shaped into tensile samples by a combination of abrading and acid etching, annealed at 850°C in a vacuum (1 x 10" mm &Z) for several days, and furnace cooled to 200'. The testing was done on a model TM Instron using friction grips and a strain rate of about 5 x 106 per sec unless otherwise noted. The various testing temperatures were obtained by immersing the specimens in the following media: 1) 4.2': liquid helium using the apparatus of G. Byrne;' 2) 77°K: liquid nitrogen; 3) 200"K: dry ice and acetone; 4) 415' K: ethylene glycol; 5) 460' \ to 480' : molten Stanalax. In the determination of the CRSS above 296' K, a ratio method was used; the crystals were strained initially at the higher temperature, 0.1 pct shear strain, and then tested at 296' . The ratio of the flow stress between the two temperatures was then multiplied by the average CRSS at 296' K to obtain the value of the CRSS at the high temperature. (The test at 296' showed a yield point resulting from strain aging; the flow stress at 296' K was taken as the lower yield stress.) THE mathematical analysis of diffusion curves in solid metals is Carried out ordinarily by analogy with the flow of heat in a continuous medium and no account is taken of the fact that the materials involved are composed of discrete particles that move discrete distances at irregular intervals. It is possible to treat the problem on the basis of simple assumed atomic mechanisms, in which case, because of the small scale of the elementary process compared to the gross effects observed experimentally, the two procedures lead to the same expression for the variation of concentration with distance. Thus, for engineering purposes, the usual methods are quite satisfactory. If, on the other hand, our purpose is to go beyond the mere collection of data, however desirable this may be, it is necessary to recognize and understand the factors that are of fundamental importance. One factor that has not hitherto been considered when dealing with solid metals is the difference in atomic weights of the isotopes of a single metal. While all the atoms of a given element are alike chemically, their weights may vary by a small but significant amount, and atoms of different weights may have different diffusion rates. With gases this variation in isotopic weight produces a change in the rate of diffusion by a factor inversely proportional to the square root of mass. While, except for the lightest gases, this is not a large effect, it is, for example, sufficient to permit a considerable concentration of one isotope at the expense of others. If metals exhibit a similar phenomenon, some modification of the analysis of the diffusion process will be required, since the different isotopes of a given metal will have different probabilities of moving and the heat-flow analogy will contain a fundamental error. This situation cannot be rectified by using a diffusion coefficient based on the average probability of moving, and it can be shown that even when the diffusion coefficient is independent of composition, the diffusion curve will not agree with the simple theory except in the rare cases where only one isotope exists; e.g., gold. If, however, the mass effect in the solid state were no larger than in the gaseous, the errors arising therefrom in the analysis of ordinary diffusion curves would be quite negligible. Nevertheless, our desire to obtain all possible information concerning the details of the diffusion process, and the possibility of diffusion in the solid state as a means for separating isotopes are cogent reasons for undertaking an experimental study to determine whether isotopes of different masses diffuse at different rates. The Western World's gold reserves now exceed 23,000 mt (750 million oz), 65% of which exist in South Africa. Although several major mines are reducing production or closing because of depletion of reserves, new mines or expansions of existing mines are coming on-stream which will maintain an annual production of 684 mt (22 million oz) of gold well into the 1990s. These new operations by the South African mining industry represent the largest expansion since the opening of the Witwatersrand gold fields in 1886. Included in three new mines being opened is that of Anglo American Corporation's Elandsrand plant, their fir& new gold venture in South Africa in seventeen years. Current average grade of South African mines is 8.2 g Au per mt (0.24 oz per st); and while the cost of the Elandsrand 135,000 mt (149,000 st) operation, including mine development, was about $314 million, it is estimated that the cost of a comparable operation started today and completed in the mid-1980s would be of the order of $480 million. New mines to exploit low-grade ore bodies are, therefore, likely to be few in number, and further expansion will undoubtedly be in the form of extensions to existkg operations where cash flow can be used to finance development. The authors' first monograph, "Gold and Silver Cyanidation Plant Practice," devoted a section to South African cyanide plant operation; and it is believed that this new volume would not be complete without a description of Elandsrand, South Africa's newest gold plant. The Elandsrand mine is adjacent to Anglo American's Western Deep Levels on the Far West Rand. The decision to go ahead with the development was taken in mid-1974 from the results of exploration drilling carried out over a period of .lo years. Results of 17 bore holes and 68 intersections of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef had indicated a gold-.bearing reef less than one meter thick at a depth of 1,800 to 3,000 meters (5,900 to 9,840 ft). Preliminary studies indicated a mine of 900 km (560 miles) of underground workings would yield 725,000 kg (23. 3 million oz) of gold from 60 million mt (66 million st) of ore to be milled over a period of 34 years. Eventually, when the mine is in full production, the total hoisting capacity will be 300,000 mt per month (331,000 st) for a milling capacity of 225,000 mt per month (248,000 st). The Sc-Ti system was studied by thermal, metal-lographic, and X-ray methods. Scandium was found to transform at 1334 °C from a (hexagonal) to ß which was concluded to be bee since a continuous series of solid solutions is formed between ß scandium and ß titanium at elevated temperatures. There is a minimum in the solidus at 51 wt pet Ti and 1300°C, a monotectoid at 1050°C and 49 wt pet Ti, and a eutectoid at 875°C and 91.5 wt pet Ti. The maximum solubility of titanium in a scandium is 13.5 wt pet at the monotectoid temperature, while the maximum solubility of scandium in a titanium is 6.5 wt pet at 875°C. SCANDIUM, a member of Group 111 A of the periodic table, and now called a rare-earth metal,' has become of interest recently due to its low density (2.99 g per cc) and relatively high melting point (1539°C).Spedding,' et al. have described a method of preparation of pure scandium metal and have made a study of its basic properties. Since scandium is approximately 10 to 12 pet smaller in at. diam than the other rare earths while its electronegativity and valence are the same, a knowledge of its alloying behavior in contrast to these elements should be very helpful to fundamental alloy theory. Since scandium is quite scarce and difficult to prepare in pure form, its use as a structural material by itself seems quite unlikely. However, its use in special cases as an alloying addi- tive to other low-density materials is a possible application; the Sc-Ti system was chosen for this reason and for others of fundamental interest. Scandium was suspected of having a high temperature bee form as do some of the other rare-earth metals.3'4 Since titanium has a high-temperature bee form, a continuous series of solid solutions at elevated temperatures between ß scandium and ß titanium would prove the existence and structure of the high-temperature form of scandium. The existence of a continuous series of hexagonal solid solutions at room temperature was predicted by Burkhanov and Savitskiy,5 but Hias shown to be incorrect in early X-ray studies. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Materials. The metals employed in this investigation were crystal bar titanium and distilled scandium prepared by the method described by Spedding,2 et al. The major impurities are listed in Table I in PPm. Alloy Preparation. Sulfur solubility in a iron was measured in the 750 to 890°C temperature range and was found to be insensitive to ferrite purity within a limited composition range. The permeability of sulfur in ferrite was determined from the internal sulfidation of Fe-Mn alloys. From the solubility and permeability results, the diffusivity of sulfur in ferrite could be calculated. These results are summarized as follows: Dissolved sulfur decreased the lattice parameter of ferrite. The effect of dissolved sulfur on the tensile properties of ferrite at low temperatures was also determined. SINCE sulfur is an important residual impurity in commercial irons and steels, effects associated with the presence of sulfur as a solute in iron are of considerable practical interest. Unfortunately, certain basic information relative to the Fe-S system appears to be lacking in the literature, e.g., the effect of dissolved sulfur on the lattice parameter and mechanical properties of ferrite. In addition, discrepancies exist in previously reported results for the solubility of sulfur in ferrite. These discrepancies raise questions regarding the sensitivity of sulfur solubility to the purity and microstructure of iron. This study was undertaken primarily in an effort to obtain reliable data on the solubility of sulfur in ferrite. Additional objectives included determination of the permeability and diffusivity of sulfur in ferrite by the internal sulfidation method and determination of the effect of dissolved sulfur on the lattice parameter and tensile properties of ferrite. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Three grades of iron, encompassing a range of impurity levels, were employed in the study. The grades were designated VME (vacuum-melted electrolytic), SPZR (single-pass zone-refined), and MPZR (multipass zone-refined). The composition of each grade is given in Table I. Poly crystalline and single-crystal strip specimens were employed in the solubility experiments. Uniform grain size strip (ASTM 3 to 5) of 0.005 to 0.020 in. thickness was obtained by alternate cold reductions of 60 thickness 60 to 80 pct and recrystallization at 650°C for i hr in pure, dry argon. Single-crystal specimens were produced in 0.010-in.-thick SPZR iron strip by the strain-gradient anneal technique. Recrystallized strip 0.25 in. wide was strained until a Luders band or bands had propagated over the length of the strip; the strip was then annealed by drawing it through a 150°C per in. gradient (890°C peak temperature) at 1 in. per hr in an atmosphere of pure, dry argon. Laue photographs of the crystals produced exhibited no discernible asterism. The subject paper presents the results of a reservoir behavior analyzer study of the pressure-production performance of five Ellenburger pools in West Texas. These five pools are Wheeler, TXL, Andector, Embar, and Martin. This laboratory has also made reservoir behavior analyzer studies in this area and arrived at substantially the same conclusions. Although the principal results of the studies made in this laboratory are confirmed by the results in the subject paper, there are certain points of difference. The points of difference are (1) the subject paper includes the Martin pool in the common aquifer, whereas our studies indicate that it is not, and (2) the subject paper concludes that the effective aquifer is considerably smaller than that derived from studies made in this laboratory. In terms of reservoir analyzer data, our rejection of Martin is based on the inability to obtain a satisfactory match of the pressure curve when Martin is considered as lying within the common aquifer. A satisfactory match was possible, however, when Martin was run as an isolated pool. This indicates that the pressure disturbance resulting from production at Martin had not reached Embar, Andector, TXL, or Wheeler at the time of our study. A similar situation exists relative to Dollarhide. In tern of geological data, our rejection of Martin is based on the presence of a faulted zone between Martin and Embar. This condition is indicated in Fig. 4 and again in Fig. 10 of the subject report. If a permeable connection between Martin and the other fields does exist, it is probably by way of a detour around this fault. The second point of difference between the two studies is illustrated by a comparison of Fig. 4 of the subject paper with Eg. A. Fig. A is obtained from an internal report on one of the studies made by this laboratory. It will be noted that the area indicated in Fig. 4 is roughly that marked "Pool Unit" in Fig. A. The additional portion of the aquifer shown in Fig. A was simulated on the reservoir analyzer by means of the water drive network. A satisfactory pressure match could not be obtained without this additional network. The differences involved here stem from a more fundamental consideration concerning reservoir analyzer operating techniques. The true source of these differences in reported results cannot at this time be determined because of the incompleteness of the subject paper.
