IT is my purpose to give some of the results obtained by an experience of nearly seven years in working ores by the method frequently called the Washoe Process, and in several mills of which I have had charge, but principally in the Owyhee Mill, at Silver City, Idaho, which had twenty '650-pound stamps, and sixteen pans. I shall discuss here merely the mechanical details for working ores generally, subdividing the subject as follows: 1. Preparation of the ore for the stamps; 2. The crushing in the battery; 3. The settling of sand or pulp in vats or tanks; 4. The treatment in the pans; 5. The results obtained in settlers, agitators, and concentrators ; 6. The straining of quicksilver, cleaning of amalgam, and retorting; 7. The saving of slimes and their subsequent treatment; 8. The loss of quicksilver. For descriptions of the various kinds of orebreakers, stamps, tanks, pans, settlers, etc., I must refer to the various works on these subjects, prominent among which are the reports of the United States Commissioner of Mining Statistics, and the volume on "Mining Industry," the third volume of the United States Geological Survey on the Line of the Fortieth Parallel through the gold and silver bearing regions of the great West, undertaken under the able guidance of Clarence King, assisted by Mr. James D. Hague and others. In this discussion it will be assumed that the general arrangement of the quartz mill is understood; and the question will be treated how to secure, from such a mill, the greatest economy in working, combined with the largest results. This place seems fittest for a single preliminary suggestion-namely, that there should be double "floors" throughout the mill, so that nothing can sift through and be lost.

The ores of the region are contained in rocks of pre-Cambrian age, which, for most of the country up to recent years, have usually been referred to as “crystalline schists” or “crystalline complex;” and regarded principally as a metamorphosed basement-unit upon which the sedimentary rocks, beginning with the Paleozoic, were laid down. In the Lake Superior region this pre-Cambrian complex presents an' unusual variety of rocks with determinable relations. It has been possible, with the large expenditures which the magnitude of the iron-mining industry warrants, to work out their stratigraphy to a larger degree than bas been possible in almost any other area of pre-Cambrian rocks. [The portion here omitted contains descriptions of the Archean, Algonkian, and Keweenawan rocks of the several districts, their structure, distribution, correlation, and succession. Table I. and the geological map of the Lake Superior region belong to this portion, but are here reproduced on account of their value as guides to the readers of the rest of the paper.] The simplest and clearest conception of the pre-ambrian succession for the Lake Superior region may perhaps be obtained by thinking of it as primarily divided into six series-Keweenawan, Upper Huronian, Middle Huronian, Lower Huronian, Keewatin, and Laurentian-all but the last two separated by unconformities of varying and disputed relative im-

Data on worldwide geophysical activity in mining exploration programs is collected annually by the Geophysical Activity Committee of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists as part of a continuing service to the industry. The data is obtained by sending out questionnaires to all organizations (which are) known to be carrying out mining geophysical work; the organizations canvassed include mining companies, contractors, government departments and universities. The questionnaire is divided into three sections, namely ground methods, airborne methods and research. In 1968, 515 questionnaires were circulated throughout the non-Communist world and 283 replies were received which is a 55% return. A 67% return was received from the U. S. organizations surveyed so the statistics quoted in this report for the United States are reasonably reliable. This report is published in condensed form, but with emphasis on the United States statistics, with the permission of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. It was presented at the 39th Annual International Meeting of the SEG in Calgary, Alberta, on September 15, 1969. Worldwide utilization of mining geophysical methods reached a new high in 1968 with total expenditures of United States $41.4 million, compared lo $32.3 million in 1967, representing a 28%, increase. The expenditure distribution by area and type of activity is shown in the graph on page 64. In terms of money spent, ground geophysical surveys accounted for 49% of the total, airborne survey's 36% and research 15%. The percentage of the money spent on ground geophysical surveys fell by approximately 7% from 1967, that for airborne surveys, increased by 5%, and for research the amount increased by 2%. Industry accounted for 79°1% of the total monies spent on mining geophysical activity in the world in 1968 and governments and universities 21 o%.

Owing to the nature of the die-casting process, fresllly cast alloys are undoubtedly not at equilibrium from the standpoint of alloy phase relationships. After casting, therefore, they tend to undergo phase changes, with the ultimate effeet of reaching a state of equilibrium at the aging temperature, beyond which no fnrther change takes place. This phase alteration undoubtedly is one of the primary causes of the changes in dimensions and physical properties that zinc-alloy die castings undergo during aging. It is planned to report on this problem in a series of papers of which this is the first. The writers have made a study of commercial zinc die-casting alloys over a period of several years, utilizing the X-ray diffraction technic of determining the phase composition changes in the alloys. Up to the present, two principal phase changes have been observed which are capable of causing dimensional changes: (I) the segregation of secondary constituents from the zinc-base solid solution and (2) the beta aluminum-zinc decomposition. The latter is the subject of the present paper and studies on the former will be reported upon at a future time. Scope of Study In the present investigation a special technic for the study of the beta phase in zinc-alloy die castings has been developed, making possible the determination of the period of existence of the beta phase after casting. The pure beta constituent and its decomposition have been studied in detail. The effect of magnesium and copper on the velocity of the decomposition is reported. The heat of decomposition, the eutectoid temperature arid the accompanying density change have been measured. The density change lias been calculated from data on crystal structure and the result thus obtained has been compared with the actual change.

(communication to the Secretary†):—I observed (Trans., xxxvii., 585) that to obtain tenders from several American mills, the foreign engineer should modify his maximum phosphorus to 0.10 per cent., not as Mr. E. Windsor Richards quotes me, that no American rail-maker can produce rails under 0.10 per cent. of phosphorus. Mr. Richards claims that no English engineer would agree to accept 0.10 per cent. of phosphorus on any terms whatever. Mr. Webster writes that only after an engineer has .been convinced that rails can be made in America equal in every respect to those he is getting abroad, should he be asked to modify ally conditions in his specifications. I know it to be a fact that during recent years in many cases, as, for instance, When delivery could be secured more promptly in the United States than in Europe, the consulting engineers of several British and colonial railroads have frequently agreed to modify their phosphorus requirement to a maximum of 0.10 per cent., and the rails delivered' under these modified specifications have, under like conditions, given just as satisfactory service and proved to be no more brittle than similar sections of 0.07 per cent. phosphorus rails, rolled in England under the same specification except without modification as to phosphorus. Furthermore, it would appear from the analyses of British rails, quoted by E. A. Dancaster,2 in his discussion of Mr.

Whole-rock analyses of limestones, fine-gralned dolostones and coarser-grained dolostones adjacent to mineralized breccias (Coy mine, Mascot-Jefferson City district) were compared with similar lithologies adjacent to apparently non-mineralized breccias at the new Thorn Hill section located approximately 39 km north of the Coy mine. Specimens were analyzed for Ca, Mg, Si, Al, K, Fe, Mn, Sr, Br, C1, S, Ti and P using X-ray fluorescence analysis. The concentrations of the major and most minor elements for Thorn Hill specimens fall within the range of concentrations for Coy mine specimens; however, significant differences (probability < 0.05) were noted for Fe, C1 and Br for fine-grained dolostones and for MgO, Fe and Mn for the coarser-grained dolostones. No significant differences were detected for the limestones.

PARRAVANO and Malquori&apos; studied the equilibrium of H2S-Hz with molybdenum and its lowest sulfide which they believed to be MoS2. Mc Cabe&apos; has shown that its composition is actually Mo2S3 and determined its dissociation pressure by means of Knud-sen effusion measurements. Stubbles and Richard- son3 have recently studied the equilibrium of gas mixtures of H2S-HZ with the two-phase solid mixtures of Mo-MozS3 and Mo2S3-MoS2. The latter investigators found that M02s3 deviated slightly from the stoichiometric composition, but they did not determine the homogeneous region of the disulfide phase. Morimoto and Kullerud, studied the Mo-S system by quenching, microscope, and X-ray methods and concluded that the disulfide is stoichiometric. The present investigation was concerned with the measurement of the sulfur vapor pressure variation with composition at 1100°C in the homogeneous region of "MoS2". These measurements were made by reacting: 1) molybdenum powder (99.97 pct Moj with sulfur vapor, and 2) MoS1.g9 (formed by reaction of Mo + H2S) with sulfur vapor in a quartz capsule. Conditions were controlled to form an equilibrated phase within the homogeneous region of the disulfide. The quartz capsule was sealed off initially under a vacuum and the residual gases were gettered by titanium powder contained in one end of the capsule. A mixture of Mo + S or MOS,., + S was in the other end. The section containing the titanium powder was heated for 24 hr at 700°C and then removed by flame sealing. The end of the capsule containing the charge was then heated to 1100°C. The other end of the capsule was maintained at a temperature which would produce the desired sulfur pressure in the capsule (liquid sulfur distilled from the charge mixture was retained in this end). After equilibration, the capsule was removed from the heating assembly and rapidly air-cooled. It is assumed that equality existed between the total sulfur pressures (PT) in the two ends of the capsule and not between the partial pressures of the different molecular species (S, SZ, Three separately controlled heating elements were used to maintain the proper temperature gradient over the length (approximately 12 in.) of the capsule. A thermocouple-Wheelco "Capacitrol" system was used for temperature control of the two end heating elements within 2"C. The center heating element was controlled directly by a " Power -stat". Separate controlling and measuring thermocouples were used for both end heating elements. Pt-Pt(l0 pct Rh) thermocouples were used for 1100°C and Chromel-Alumel thermocouples were used for lower-temperature control and measurement of the assembly. Silver foil was wrapped around the end of the capsule containing the liquid sulfur to insure a constant temperature zone. The thermal gradient over the entire length of the capsule was measured to: 1) ascertain that the length of the constant temperature zone of the liquid-sulfur end and the sulfide end was sufficient, and 2) ascertain that the liquid-sulfur zone was the zone of lowest temperature. The data obtained in this investigation are shown in Fig. 1 and Table I. Following the development of electrolytic manganese production by the Bureau of Mines, an extensive program was planned to study the character of this high-purity product and its possible utilization in various alloy combinations. Previous work reported in the literature concerning alloys containing substantial amounts of manganese dealt largely with material prepared from relatively impure grades of the metal, and in many instances the impurities thus introduced did not permit true evaluation of manganese as an alloying element. One phase of the Bureau&apos;s program included a general review of the system and the establishment of the physical properties of copper-manganese-zinc alloys, using electrolytic manganese, and with particular emphasis directed to compositions within the alpha solid solution area. A number of reports of the work on alloys in this system, giving specific data concerning the equilibrium system and some of its alloys, have already been published. One study&apos; established the alpha solid solution area at various temperature levels and composition ranges up to 50 pct manganese. Other investigation reports presented the properties of selected alloys; namely, a 65 pct copper, I0 pct manganese, 25 pct zinc alloys;1 a sensibly white manganese brass composed of 70 pct copper, 20 pct manganese, 10 pct zinc,3 and a series of alloys with a constant copper content of 60 pct and 5 to 25 pct manganese, balance zinc.4 In these reports tensile properties as influenced by cold-working and subsequent annealing were given in detail. Additional data are now available on other alloys of the alpha region up to 50 pct manganese, and these, together with previously published information, are sufficiently complete to establish the relationship between properties and composition for this portion of the ternary system. The present report is a summary of the tensile properties of wrought alloys in the form of sheet and rod stock. The summary is necessarily limited to data for only one condition of cold-work and a single annealing temperature, since a complete exposition of all the data available would be too extensive for this presentation. Nevertheless, it is possible to make a reasonable approximation of the tensile properties in other conditions of cold-worki"g and annealing by a correlation of the data previously presented on specific alloys and the data given here.

The interaction between British gum 9084 and dode-cylammonium chloride (DAC) at quartz and hematite surfaces was established from coadsorption studies and streaming potential measurements. The cationic DAC interacts with the somewhat anionic British gum 9084, leading to the formation and adsorption of a binary complex of DAC-British Gum 9084 at the interface. The parallel ability to depress quartz along with hematite as a result of the interaction between DAC and British gum appears to be the main reason for the ineffective depressant action of starches and starch derivatives in the cationic flotation of iron ores. Amines are not particularly selective collectors for the flotation&apos; of siliceous gangue from iron ores and, therefore, a suitable iron oxide depressant is needed for a satisfactory separation. Various starches and their derivatives have been extensively tested with oxidized iron ores,&apos;-3 and it has been empirically established that British gums and dextrins are preferable. However, for the flotation upgrading of magnetite-taconite concentrates from 8 or 8.5% Si O2 to about 5% Si 02, British gums, which have been used so successfully on oxidized iron ores, have been found to have no effect and oftentimes are actually deleterious.4 In previous articles,5-7, starches were shown by adsorption measurements, flotation tests, and floccula-tion tests to interact with calcium ions in solution, and it was thought that a study on the interaction between starches and dodecylammonium ions would be able to shed some light on the anomalous flotation behavior described above. In fact, starches are known to interact markedly with paraffin-chain-type surface active agents and, thereby, to precipitate the starch or inhibit the iodine-starch reaction.8 From X-ray diffraction studies and viscosity measurements, the formation of a helical complex between mylose and a surface active agent has been postulated.9 The interaction with other types of hydrophilic colloids, such as synthetic polymers and proteins, has also been investigated and is usually explained in terms of van der Waals&apos; force interaction and/or ion-ion interaction. In the present investigation, the interaction of British gum and dode cylammonium chloride on quartz and hematite was studied by adsorption and streaming potential measurements in an attempt to establish the mutual adsorption behavior of British gum and dode-cylammonium chloride on mineral surfaces and to clarify the anomalous depressant activity of British gum in the cationic flotation of iron ores. All the measurements were carried out at a natural pH of near 7 because dodecylammonium chloride gives maximum selectivity of flotation separation at this pH2 and to avoid any third parameter in the system. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS Minerals: The quartz and hematite samples used for the adsorption tests were prepared as described in a previous paper,"J except that the specific surfaces of the samples were increased to 5,860 and 16,000 Sq cm per gm, respectively. For the streaming potential measurements, the 48165-mesh fractions screened out of the original samples were etched with hydrochloric acid, washed repeatedly with water, and stored under water in Pyrex bottles. Reagents:DodecyIammonium chloride (DAC) was prepared1 1 by bubbling dry hydrogen chloride gas through a benzene solution of high-purity dodecylamine supplied by Armour and Co. British gum 9084, received from Corn Products Co., was solubilized by first dispersing it in water to produce a 0.05% solution and then homogenizing it in a blender for 5 min. Distilled water was used in the preparation of the samples and the solutions and for all test work. Adsorption Measurements: The procedure for the adsorption density determinations was also the same as that described in the previous paper.1° The residual concentrations of the British gum and the DAC in the supernatant solution were analyzed colorimetrically by the phenol-sulf uric-acid and amine-picrate methods, respectively. The validity of the mine-picrate method for the colorimetric analysis of DAC in the presence of British gum and the analysis of British gum in presence of DAC were checked by establishing calibration curves between optical density and concentration. Tests carried out with both kaolin and silica slurries show that flocculants of the polyacrylamide type can be used to improve the thickening performance of hydrocyclones. This thickening improvement demonstrates that contrary to previously held theories, flocs can be formed which are capable of resisting the shear forces in a hydrocyclone. For the 1.25-in.-diam cyclone used, optimum thickening occurs when the flocculant solution is injected into the slurry stream at or near the feed inlet. Hydrocyclones offer many distinct advantages over gravity thickeners. These advantages include simplicity, low initial and operating costs, small space requirements, and flexibility of operation. In spite of these advantages hydrocyclones have not been widely used as thickeners. The main reason for their lack of application is that hydrocyclones are unable to efficiently remove semicolloidal particles (less than 5 microns) from the suspending solution. In gravity thickeners, the fine particles can be induced to form particle aggregates, or flocs, which have the settling characteristics of large particles. In the hydrocyclone, however, it was always assumed that the existence of shear would prevent the formation of flocs.1-3 Thus, if no floc structure is retained, the thickening hydrocyclone must be designed so that its separation size is below the size of the smallest particle to be recovered. To obtain a very small separation size requires the formation of very high centrifugal forces, which necessitates the use of small-diameter cyclones. Small hydrocyclones have, in turn, very low throughput capacities which render them impractical for many industrial thickening applications. Thus, if the effects of flocculation cannot be utilized, the usefulness of hydrocyclones as thickeners remains limited to pulps which contain no very fine particles. It is well established that most substances acquire a surface electric charge when brought into contact with an aqueous medium. The repulsive interactions between similarly charged particles act to prevent flocculation. One method of flocculating a dispersion is to neutralize the repulsive surface charges by the addition of an electrolyte. The reduction of the electrostatic surface charge (Zeta potential) then permits the universal van der Waals attractive forces to operate between the atoms of the various particles and form particle aggregates. The lime additions used by thickener operators promotes flocculation by this mechanism. A second method of flocculating a dispersion is by the addition of long-chain macromolecules. In this case flocculation is brought about by a bridging mechanism in which the molecules are adsorbed with part of their length on two or more particles, thus forming a molecular bridge between the particles.4,5 The molecules also form bridges between themselves when a single particle is bonded to several polymer molecules. The type of bonding between the flocculant molecule and the particle may be hydrogen bonding, chemical bonding, or electrolytic attraction.6 The flour and glue which are used as thickener additives are believed to promote flocculation in this manner. In the past decade synthetic long-chain polymers with extremely high flocculating capabilities have been developed. The flocs formed by these new polymeric flocculants are larger and more shear-resistant than those formed by the presence of electrolytes.7 The advent of these flocculants raises the question: Are the flocs formed by these synthetic polymers stable enough to resist the liquid shearing forces in a hydrocyclone? The investigations reported in this paper were carried out in order to provide some answers to this question. EXPERIMENTAL WORK For the bulk of the test work a 5% slurry of commercially available kaolin with an average particle size of 5 microns was used. An initial evaluation of the available flocculants was carried out to determine which flocculant formed the most shear-resistant flocs. A combination of the techniques used by Healy7 and Booth8 was used for this purpose. This initial study revealed that the neutral high-molecular weight polyacrylamides produced the most shear-resistant flocs. One of these flocculants, Separan MGL*, was selected and then used for all the hydrocyclone tests. The flocculant was dissolved in water and added to the hydrocyclone as a dilute solution.

Discussion of the paper of Charles R. Keyes, presented at the Spokane meeting. Bulletin o. 34, October, 1909, pp. 867 to 903. A. M. STRONG, Bishop, Cal: (communication to the Secretary*) The paper of Mr. Keyes gives us the most complete account of the geology of the borax-deposits in the Death Valley region that has yet been published, and is a valuable addition to the geological literature of a very interesting though little-known territory. During the past ten years I have been over much of the northern part of the country described by Mr. Keyes and the region immediately north of it. Mr. Keyes seems to give the impression that Furnace creek is the northern end of these borate-bearing deposits, but such is not the case. Of the seven principal marsh-deposits which for years furnished the greater part of the borax supply in the manner described by him, four are north of the boundary-line as given on his map. The entire territory immediately east of the Sierra Nevada is composed of a series of sinks, each with a well-defined drainage-area.. Of these, Death valley is the deepest, and its drainage-area one of the greatest. The section given in the paper is typical of any line drawn eastward from the Sierra Nevada. At the lowest point of each of these sinks is a marsh, which, in times of heavy rain-fall in the mountains, is converted into a lake. These marshes always contain borax, which is now considered to have been derived from the washing of the Tertiary lake-beds in the surrounding mountains, of which they form a considerable part. Additional territory which I have studied shows that the boundaries given on Mr. Keyes&apos;s map should be considerably extended to the north. Just how far these borate-beds extend I am not prepared to say. J. E. Spurr says of them : 1

It is my purpose to give some of the results obtained by an experience of nearly seven years in working ores by the method frequently called the Washoe Process, and in several mills of which I have had charge, but principally in the Owyhee Mill, at Silver City, Idaho, which had twenty 650-pound stamps, and sixteen pans. I shall discuss here merely the mechanical details for working ores generally, subdividing the subject as follows : 1. Preparation of the ore for the stamps; 2. The crushing in the battery; 3. The settling of sand or pulp in vats or tanks; 4. The treatment in the pans; 5. The results obtained in settlers, agitators, and concentrators; 6. The straining of quicksilver, cleaning of amalgam, and retorting; 7. The saving of slimes and their subsequent treatment; 8. The loss of quicksilver. For descriptions of the various kinds of orebreakers, stamps, tanks, pans, settlers, etc., I must refer to the various works on these subjects, prominent among which are the reports of the United States Commissioner of Mining Statistics,and the volume on "Mining Industry," the third volume of the United States Geological Survey on the Line of the Fortieth Parallel through the gold and silver bearing regions of the great West, undertaken under the able guidance of Clarence King, assisted by Mr. James D. Hague and others. In this discussion it will be assumed that the general arrangement of the quartz mill is understood; and the question will be treated how to secure, from such a mill, the greatest economy in working, combined with the largest results. This place seems fittest for a single preliminary suggestion—namely, that there should be double "floors" throughout the mill, so that nothing can sift through and be lost.

The ferromagnetic copper-manganese-aluminum and copper-manganese-tin alloys (Heusler alloys) owe their ferromagnetism to the beta phases (body-centered cubic structure) in their respective systems.l,2,3 The ternary beta phase regions in these systems are extensions of the beta fields of the binary copper-aluminum and copper-tin systems into the ternary models of the copper-manganese-aluminum and copper-manganese-tin systems respectively. X ray analysis has indicated the presence of long-range order in the more strongly magnetic alloys.3,4,5 The ideal ordered structure is obtained in alloys of compositions Cu2MnAl and Cu2MnSn; the copper atoms occupy positions at cube centers while the aluminum (tin) and manganese atoms alternate at cube corners. This atomic arrangement is illustrated in Fig 1. The compositions Cu2MnAl and Cu2MnSn are also those that show maximum magnetic saturation moment. 3,4,6,7 Departures from these compositions result in a decrease in the degree of order attainable and a decrease in magnetic saturation moment. In view of the chemical similarities of aluminum, tin, indium, and gallium, and the existence of beta phases in the binary systems copper-indium and copper-gallium, it may be suspected that ternary beta phases exist in the systems copper-manganese-indium and copper-manganese-gallium, and that these are ferromagnetic. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether ferromagnetic beta phases exist in the systems copper-manganese-indium and copper-manganese-gallium analogous to the ferromagnetic beta phases in the systems copper-manganese-aluminum and copper-manganese-tin. Tinsley Oil Field.—Mississippi joined the oil-producing states when on Sept. 13, 1939, the Union Producing Company&apos;s G. C. Woodruff well No. 1, sec. 13, T. 10 N., R. 3 W., Yazoo County, was completed after drilling plug at 4540 ft. in the Woodruff sand of the Eutaw formation of Cretaceous, producing 300 bbl. per day of 34.4" gravity oil through a ¼-in. choke, with a gas-oil ratio of 80 to 1 and bottom-hole pressure of 2045 lb. This was the discovery well in the Tinsley oil field. The well was drilled to a total depth of 4567 ft. and no salt water was encountered. The sand underlies the Selma chalk formation. Nine producing oil wells and one dry hole were drilled and completed by the end of 1939. Two producing sands have been found in the Eutaw and a third sand in the top of the Tuscaloosa formation, called the Woodbine sand in Louisiana and Texas. Faulting is an important factor in the Tinsley field. Total oil production has been approximately 250,000 bbl. from the nine flowing wells. Total depth to top of productive zone was 4540 ft.; to bottoms of productive wells, 4580 ft. Net thickness of the producing formation is 20 to 40 ft., and its porosity is 24 per cent. The deepest zone tested was the Tuscaloosa, in which the depth of hole was 6112 feet. Six hundred and forty acres has been proved for oil production. Jackson Gas Field.—The Jackson gas field has shown a steady decline in the number of wells but the pressure has been maintained. This field is a perfect example of a water-driven field and the time of wells going to salt water is predictable. Five wells were drilled in the Jackson field, of which only one produced. Amory Gas Field.—Interest was renewed in the Amory gas field, where a new well was started in the fall of 1939. Geological Formations.—The deepest well drilled in 1939 was the Willmut Gas and Oil Company&apos;s Cleve Love S. F. Johnson No. 1, sec. 29, T. 6 N., R. 1 W., Hinds County. This well encountered the Lower Cretaceous, Trinity series from 3770 to 6422 ft.; Lower Mesozoic from 6422 to 6484 ft. The geological correlations and nomenclature of the formations in Mississippi are shown in the accompanying strati-graphic section.
